@hobodave Brain rearranging facts to make room for new facts?
I dont know
I needed to type an 8 digit number to test a form and boom this number popped into my head, and I didn't know wtf it was or why it felt familiar
then it dawned on me that it must be my ICQ number
memory is cool :)
Hi @eggie5 Welcome to the Snark Pit.
@Jacob!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL
I get the distinct impression he's looking for work... ;-)
Hey guys
@warner could this admin be remote
00:35
hmm. Windows.
My VPS is pending ATM. It's like waiting for Christmas morning.
Need help troubleshooting on Windows Vista. Anyone in here up for it?
MY SERVER IS FINALLY BACK
the menu changed again, now it shows recent changes on rep
00:42
@Josh Sweet! Through all of this, is support at least communicative?
@WesleyDavid somewhat yes
I've got something kicking off msiexec.exe on startup in Vista. I've tried digging through the registry, and msconfig. Are there any particular spots I might have missed? Trying to do this without downloading any software to the system.
@WesleyDavid part of the issue was they were emailing me, and my email is on this server :-p
Sorry, @Jacob. Looking for local presence.
@Iszi: Any particular reason for the limitation of no downloaded software?
00:45
@Hello71 It's not my machine.
@Josh Bah! Yeah, I've had things happen like that.
@Iszi: Well, I trust Microsoft software running on my Microsoft operating system.
@Hello71 I never said I didn't trust the software. It's just not my system.
ESR's "How to ask a question" essay, while informative and good to live by, could also be subtitled "How some people like to justify being dicks to other people."
@WesleyDavid Agreed.
I think I dug up a relevant KB article...
Yeah... nothing useful there.
Anyone else have ideas?
It seems like the defunct Windows Installer Cleanup utility might have been able to do the job...
01:34
@warner: Looks like a fun gig. I'm not nearly local enough and having way too much "fun" doing what I am here in Dayton but I'll send your ad to a couple of former colleagues who might be looking.
And.... I'm back
@Iszi: I was annoyed by the deprecation of the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.
@Warner No problem; thanks!
Is your Application Event Log telling you anything helpful? If a "repair" is happening it should be logged there. Kicking up verbose MSI logging ("voicewarmup") might help, too.
Thanks, @EvanAnderson. I appreciate it. It's definitely hard finding the caliber of person to fit well in our team here, as we require exceptional capabilities at all levels. Not to mention, being responsible, which seems to be rarer than one would think. ;)
01:44
Off to the coffee shop. Hibernate, little laptop... hibernate.
... I'm considering trying to give Matt Simmons a job, but that would be down the road at a different level. ;)
Now all he has to do is respond to my e-Mail, ha.
bbl.

A: Eeeek! What happened to my envelope?

Jeff AtwoodRelax. Killing the violently hated envelope was only the first step of this process. Improving the user drop-down and the pages it links to is the next step. We're actively working on this, and Nick and Jarrod will be dedicated exclusively to this for the next 4-5 business days. Forget the /r...

haha
I think Jeff got is slightly wrong :)
It does strike one as amazing how often Jeff seems to be downvoted into the 6th circle.
he's either loved or hated
He is a developer.
@Zypher Hey by chance my StackExchange need a remote admin/intern?
I am bored out of my mind anymore
@Jacob nah we don't
02:31
@Zypher not even slightly? :(
nope sorry
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!
@coredump English or German please
@jacob :)
Damnit @coredump! Let him sleep!
02:43
@packs ?
@packs shhhhh
@coredump :|
@packs what, do you want us to be known as cultists?
@coredump What's a cult but a smallish denomination :)
The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the parody religion Created in 2005 by Oregon State physics graduate Bobby Henderson, it was originally intended as a satirical protest against the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to permit the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution in public schools. In an open letter sent to the Kansas State Board of Education, Henderson parodied the concept of intelligent design by professing belief in a supernatural creator that closely resembles spaghetti and meatballs. Henderson further called for his "Pastafa...
02:57
@coredump nice cover, they'll never suspect a thing
Seeing FSM car badges around town makes me happy.
I miss playng Alone in the Dark
btw, do you like computer games?
I haven't played much in the past few years. I really enjoyed the Jedi Knight series, and of course Civ.
Although, for the sake of my daughter and marriage I have forbidden myself from purchasing Civ5.
ahahaha
there's an indie game called... wait let me check
Penumbra
it's really disturbing.
So they made a similar game, using the Mythos
you don't have a weapon or anything.
the game is awesome. And horrible from the terror pov
it's kinda fake, but its basically how you play the damned game
I think the last horror game I played was Phantasmagoria
03:15
this is a good example
Hm, I should be able to play that. The closest thing to a 'gaming system' I have is a first gen Macbook unibody.
Hey @Coredump Dumb question time!
So I bought a VPS from Club Uptime. I half expected an email from them or something...
Did you get one?
@EvanAnderson App log didn't help much. I eventually gave in and threw on Autoruns. That pointed to some interesting things, but even pulling those didn't help. So, I gave up for the night. I'll hammer on it more some other time. Thanks for the input though.
@WesleyDavid If I remember correctly they send you an email when it's ready
I figured. Oddly, I cannot log in to my accout on their site, and when I request a password reset, they say there is no account associated with that email address. =(
So... time to email support.
03:46
@Zypher sexy. What'd you do?
04:08
moved Stack Overflow off that server
mmmm. Maintenance time?
nah, we bought a new DB pair just for SO
Posted by George Beech on March 11th, 2011

We’ve been doing a lot of talking about some of the growing pains we have been having with our database server. And how we are going to deal with it. Well we will be moving Stack Overflow’s database to its own hardware this Friday (2011-03-11).

2011-03-11 9:00pm Eastern (2011-03-12 02:00 UTC)

To Make everything MORE AWESOME

2 new Dell R710′s

First, we will be putting Stack Overflow into Read Only mode again for the maintenance – just like we did when we went down the Oregon trail. Once the migration is complete, Stack Overflow will be on its own DB pair, and can run free, and the rest of the Stack Exchange sites don’t have to contend with the Megalopolis for database time, making them MORE AWESOME as well. …

ohh yea ... gonna alleviate lots of stuff we've been seeing
You sure you don't want to put it in the cloud? :)
I've heard it's the end all be all
04:18
hahahaha
15
A: What would Stack Exchange's yearly expenses be if it were to be using a third party host?

ZypherSo, using amazon to host the Stack Exchange network would cost about $17,286.78 a month according to their calculator and some basic assumptions. What this breaks down as: 2 High-Memory Quadruple Extra Large Instances + SQL Server machines1 & 10 Web Tier Machines1 = $10,313.44/mo Inboun...

yea, those servers cost us about 2 months of in the cloud :)
"got a lot of stick" on SF? /shockedface
But I do want some of those HDD you guys purchased
hahaha, yea they are schweeeeeet
SEXEH SEXEH COMPOOTER STUFFS!!
and BOOBS!

BOOOOOBS!

04:25
I want to work for a company that deals with bleeding freaking edge hardware
I swear, we aren't even TRYING to break out of our misogynistic stereotypes. =(
I can't help myself
I want to work for a company that deals with hardware.
I'm hardwired that way
But at least I'm man enough to do it behind their backs.
The mental image that your last sentence brought to mind made me lunge for the mind bleach.
04:27
I want to work for a company where I"m more than a glorified help desk technician with a fancy sysadmin title
hahahahhaa
@Zypher Can you reveal the prices for those Dell R710s?
@WesleyDavid at least 500 Trillion Zimbabwe dollars
Zypher said at least two months of Amazon's estimated monthly price
So about $35K
Big chunk of that would be the HDD though
nah the HD's where 8k
maybe 5
04:29
The RAM I betcha was lotsa.
Is it mirrored RAM? What is everyone's general thoughts on mirrored RAM?
nah, we would be maxed out with mirrored ram
Never used it, so I got nothing.
i guess if you where doing long running, hi resolution calculations it would be good
but ... never used it so i'm just guessing

1 hour later…
06:00
shit man Japan just can't win
@hobodave The reactor meltdown?
i dont know why would they make it near the coasts
yea
makes sense to me
if the shit hits the fan dump it in the ocean
as opposed to renderinig 1/6th of your island nation unlivable
radiation stops with water?
i dont think so
the sky is not green!
06:15
yeah

2 hours later…
08:09
Is anybody else getting a runtime error msg when they try to access superuser.com?

1 hour later…
09:18
No @Vert its working for me
09:28
"JapanWatch"© Day 2 - "Holy Fuck Edition"
Morning @Chopper3 - yeah it looks like its going to be another really bad day over there.
see the explosion? must have been some form of pressure/steam thing, no flame
at which point you have to say what the hell's keeping the fuel from melting
I'd imagine they're dumping sea water in to that thing as quick as they can
@Chopper3 I suspect something hot met something wet.
nearly 25 years since the last time this happened.
needs a spot of 'shutdown reactor 0' I think
09:36
Yeah, it definitely does, my dad used to work in a reactor in the UK - he doesn't think they're going to get this one before meltdown
09:48
Time to transition to work. Cya later
10:35
Hm... I just upgraded to Firefox 4 RC1... perhaps it's a new bug.
Can anybody else reach superuser.com with Firefox 4 RC 1?
@Vert I'm seeing the error page from Work now
From all browers
Server error in '/' application?
Interesting, i just tried to go to a link directly to a question and it worked. I tried going to the logo up top (to the main page) and that worked too.
10:56
Ok that's a jackass move but JAPAN + SEA + NUCLEAR RADIATION = ?
Same here but when I just hit the URL again, I get the error
I can get to main page, but only from a reference on the site. I can't go directly to via URL.
11:26
I've dropped an email to the devs about it. Can't do much more, about to kick off some infrastructure upgrades.
You're awesome. I couldn't find the email address (remember on slow network with tons of timeouts).
11:38
heh, no worries vert. The email is [email protected]
11:50
Thanks, I shot them an email as well.

3 hours later…
14:55
Hello guys
15:06
Yo
15:21
Gentlemen
This is odd, new firewall in place at work - and I have no access to my perimeter network right now. I'm sure something will know this and break
@ITHedgeHog What do you care... Your a programmer now.. not your problem...
Explosion heard at the nuclear reactor in Japan
another one?
15:44
just happened
15:56
@coredump really?
Damage report?
apparently
there was damage
And there goes Japan...
South Korea sent help
5 guys and a dog
@coredump Well the US is like "do you guys need help" and Japan will wait to the last second to get it and the US team will save the day... and someone else will get the credit
... go Team America
16:10
@coredump was the dog part of the food aid package?
@Jacob I'm still a SysAdmin too
@Holocryptic apparently not all dogs are eaten in korea
I have a network of my own
@coredump yeah, I think it's a special breed
it's a special bread really
16:11
LOL
@Jacob I accepted your answer on the anycast question, btw
So my boss recommended, off the record, that I look for another job.
@Holocryptic Is it because he's nervous about corporate stability, or....
@packs No. It's more because I'm still young, and he doesn't think that he'll be able to offer me much in the way of advancement or pay down the road.
(I work for a non-profit)
Ah, yeah, that's a tough one
16:20
I need to hit the books
Get some certs under my belt
What kind of work do you plan on looking for?
If you and your sanity don't get on too well, I hear there's a job with a lot of PCI responsibilities in Cbus.
Not sure. He recommended a consulting firm. That way I get exposure to a lot of stuff
Yeah, I looked at that. I'm not sure I have the experience he's looking for
It does sound awesome though
Looking at the posting, I have experience in a lot of the areas, I just don't like having to deal with PCI. It's slightly less annoying than HIPAA, but still annoying.
What exactly is it?
PCI?
16:26
yeah
Shorthand for PCI-DSS -- Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard
It's the security standards enforced by the credit card companies
It's very specific and well documented, which is awesome.
I think I'm going to study hard for the next 6 months, assess, and find another job. Not sure if I'll stay local or move to another location.
Unlike HIPAA, where the requirements are whatever the auditor tells you the requirements are.
16:31
Well, HIPAA is enforced by the government. No shock there...
@Holocryptic Hey welcome to the jobless club...
@coredump thanks
@Jacob Well, I'm not jobless yet. But I will be job hunting later this year.
@Holocryptic To be fair, the HI-TECH extensions that came up last year do specify some more things, but it's still fairly nebulous.
@Holocryptic Same, well sort except that I don't get anywork... and I am paid hourly
@Jacob well, when I punch out I might throw your name his way. I'm not sure if a remote admin would work, or if he has the budget for it. But you never know.
16:46
@Holocryptic Well 10/HR nearly any company could afford that :)
Thanks though
Heh I remeber when I was making $10/hr. Heck, I remember when I was making $6/hr. Or that one time I was making $4/hr
@holocryptic Don't make fun of my paychecks :p
I remember when I was commuting 65 miles one way to make 9/hr. Those were the days.
@Vert well, with what I have going out in bills, it still feels like I'm making that...
@packs ewww. I'm making that commute now, but not for $9/hr
@Holocryptic Well, minium wage is 7.25 but I like 10 because its a round number
16:50
@Holocryptic I still hate being in a car
@holocryptic I'm not doing too bad for my age, but bills are killing me too. Where I live, bills are higher than what I'm compensated for. Awesome lol.
@Holocryptic I can't drive but if I could I'd do it
@jacob Can't drive?
@packs The thing that sucks is that I had to get rid of my Jeep to maintain working at this job. I died a little that day...
@Vert Jacob's just a hair shy of the legal driving limit
@holocryptic Ah.
16:53
@Holocryptic Luckily another bloke I nearby also worked at the same place, so we ride-shared often. And it was in the days of cheap gas
How much is gas over there?
@packs I had an 06 Wrangler, lifted on a 2" Budget Boost, with 15" Pro Comp wheels and 33" Trxus tires
@BenPilbrow right now just shy of $4.00 a gallon
Ugh I do litres, not gallons :P
@BenPilbrow At the time, about $1.10/gal, now it's closer to ~3.50. Still cheaper than you guys
4 litres == 1 gallon
16:56
Here, let me google that for you
That's what I'm doing :P
@packs .99 gas. Those were the days...
About 57p per litre
It's ~£1.35 ($2.17) a litre over here. That is depressing :(
@Holocryptic 3.78 litres per gallon
@Holocryptic No doubt, that was awesome.
16:57
@packs meh, close enough
damn, outside of edit window
@BenPilbrow That's insane for gasoline.
It's totally outrageous - a few years ago my car cost ~£30 to fill up full. Now it's ~£45.
Europe (and GB) has always had higher rates for gas
And that's ~£45 A WEEK
@BenPilbrow is your gas taxed a lot?
16:59
If I hadn't just got a pay rise, I'd have had to seriously consider moving jobs because it just wasn't worth it
@Holocryptic I know, but at the same time... it's outrageous any time someone from the other side of the pond tells me how much they pay. It's like a new horror everytime.
@Holocryptic I was putting 92 octane in my '85 Buick Regal back when gas was that cheap.
@Vert I feel the same way. But I'm not feeling up to a geopolitical debate at this present moment
@Vert Just wait to you travel over there.
You get hit twice, both by the exchange rate and by the prices.
@Holocryptic No debate here lol. Just amazement.
17:02
I'm not really minding the fuel prices right now. I only fillup about once a month.
@packs yeah, it was that price right around when I started to drive. Then it started going up shortly thereafter
@packs I'm came pretty close to working in... I believe it was Essex.
@packs When I was younger we went on a trip to England for school, and I thought I was saving money! (I was young and stupid back then)
@Holocryptic Doh! But, based on your previous comment, that was probably the mid-late 90s
The exchange rate was pretty not bad back then.
@packs spot on
I think that trip was in 98 or 99
17:05
As I recall, in December of '97 we were trading at around 80 cents to the pound.
@Holocryptic fuel duty is 58.95p/litre
@BenPilbrow So you're paying in taxes what we're paying in total. That sounds about right
2
@BenPilbrow That just seems messed up. Just under half your cost is taxes.
Lovely isn't it
@Holocryptic I believe, right now, we're paying approximately 70c/gal in taxes. Presumably depending on your state and municipality.
17:12
Oh for the love of $DEITY, why must I reboot after installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1? :(
Grr
@BenPilbrow Riddle me this. OSX Server installs with iTunes, and requires a reboot after updating Safari. How does that a server OS make?
Touches system-wide DLL's. Enjoy :p
@BenPilbrow Why would you have VS 2010?
@packs Wait, I got this one. A newspaper!!
@Jacob To develop stuff ;)
17:21
@ITHedgeHog TRAITOR!!!!
no I still do some code :)
@Jacob I code too :)
Wow, my laptop really is getting old and cantankerous bless her - that took TIME to reboot :(
Just wait until you install Win7 SP1
I've seen it take over an hour.
Heh, I'll just keep waiting forever for the next Vista Service Pack :P
I want to code on my mac... but I don't have the HDD space to duel boot
You're toughing it out with Vista? Wow.
@Jacob Why would your boots be participating in ritualistic combat?
17:30
@Jacob If you're hardcore, you'd code in Notepad (or the Mac OS' equivalent)
@packs LOL
@BenPilbrow No thanks
If I'm coding PHP, HTML and Javascript it's all in Notepad2
@BenPilbrow Well, I am a .Net person...
Well that's fair enough
17:32
I prefer vim.
Ah crap, I think we just triggered the age-old debate of what editor to use
:)
Why in my day we had to use an icepick to freehand write our code in cardstock.
Oh FFS. I don't have the option this tutorial had, so I installed the SP in the hope that option was new. It wasn't....
AND I have this ever so enticing button in VS that does NOTHING.
Man I hate Visual Studio sometimes...
what?
Well, I think SF is working.
I just googled something and 2 of the top 5 hits were for SF.
17:43
google fixed their algorithm recently
useless content farms were ranked too high
refrains from making snarky remark
go ahead :D
A Google guy put it on his blog that the algorithm had changed, and linked Jeff's ranting blog post too
I wonder if you would get the same result if you cleared your browsing history. Or does that have no impact on searches?
Nah, it would be fairly rude to our parent site and @pauska might star it so it would be misconstrued as an actual opinion as opposed to random joke.
17:46
@packs NONNONON I WANT TO HEAR IT
you should probably use the <joke></joke> tags
Off-topic: Does anybody know when L.A. Noire and Duke Nukem Forever are coming out?
Moment's over. Sorry gents.
@Vert Nukem is set for May something, I Think
so these two content farms and serverfault walk into a bar...
@packs INSUFFICIENT PIXIE DUST, JOKES DON'T WORK THAT WAY!
17:47
And the bartender says, 'Weird, triplets.' :)
the bartender being google
You have a drink named Phil?
@packs what?
and a shady guy in the corner called bing writes the conversation down in a notebook
2
@packs thanks for the heads up on the release date.
17:59
@Vert the trailer for Nukem is hilarious
@Vert May 3 or May 6th (US/World)
@holocryptic I can't read any of the preview stories or anything, so I'm just hoping for an awesome game. Really looking forward to playing coop with friends ^^
Yes, I am in love with that trailer.
Damnit, why do they take all the hot ones?
@packs I saw the one a ways back where duke gave the huge alien the finger lol
Lol, of course. If a link leads to my happiness... blocked :p
mmmm coffee and Emmets. I love the weekend afternoons.
18:18
gonna get me some lunch right now.
18:32
This answer strikes me as a bit odd. Am I missing something?
1
A: How to zip a folder of 30 gb in Windows 2003 server

BennyI would use 7-Zip and use the 7z zip format as it is compressied less but has a smaller file size.

Well to answer the question literally, Right click -> Send To -> Compressed (Zip Folder)
That's a retarded question that just earned itself a NARQ vote
@packs besides being "compressied less"?
@BenPilbrow You'd be surprised. I once dealt with a guy when I was doing tech support. He (according to his email sig) was a certified 2008 guy with some other stuff. I shit you not, he did not know what a .zip file was.
Oh. Dear. $DEITY
@BenPilbrow You don't use pkzip?
That is poor
I use Windows - it's just there and it just works!
:-)
18:36
Oh boy, pkzip still exists.
Kinda kills that joke.
Is it bad that I don't even know what pkzip is?
I don't know it either, but I have youth and inexperience on my side
@Holocryptic I'm going to use that exact same argument!
pkzip is what I'd use to unzip the Commander Keen demos I downloaded from the local BBS at 2400 baud :-/
18:41
oh wow
Oh God, that came out in 1990.
I think I was still learning CTRL ALT DEL at that time
I was 2 then!!!
@Holocryptic Yes, it was primarily the "lower compression and smaller size" that struck me as odd.
@BenPilbrow FFS Ben!
I still listen to CDs I bought that summer.
And the girl's awake from her nap. Have a wonderful afternoon all
@packs later
18:47
@Cakemox Commander Keen... fond memories.
19:19
I loved Commander Keen since I was not allowed a Nintendo growing up, and CK was the first decent sidescroller for the PC.
I spent so much time on CK. Could never buy them though, so had to only play the shareware versions. Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter was awesome.
Halloween Harry, BioShock, Pickle Wars, the original duke nukem, Cosmic Osmo, Major Stryker...
Basically if Apogee Software made it, I played it to death.
On my 12MHz 286 running DOS 6.2 and GeoWorks for a GUI if I felt like it.
19:56
@wesleydavid How'd your VPS go?
20:16
happy saturday, all.
21:11

MichaelI've got a centOS virtual box with GoDaddy. By Default no firewall is enabled. To the point: I want to set up the regular firewall set up. Yah, nice question, eh?
watch out for registered user - dangerous answers abound
@Iain I haven't been paying attention to him. Is he off base frequently?
I wonder if it's the language barrier.
up till now I've just answered his questions - tonight I've seen a couple of fairly poor answers
