So I'm pretty righteously fscked.
Damn, I really need to get a DNS slave that the rest of the network talks to for read-only lookups.
Oh yeah, Fedora 17's my daily driver, so I see the bugs almost as soon as the developers write them.
I take DNS down for 3 minutes and everyone has a shitfit.
@MichaelHampton yeah, and we also need to have an update cycle longer than 18 months too. So it's pretty much LTS releases for us. Except, once again, this one is full of problems.
We didn't move from 9.10 to 10.04LTS because of the massive interface upheaval with that release.
Ha, 12.04 was even worse in that department.
@MichaelHampton Tell me about it. Shuttleworth needs his balls crushed in a hydraulic press.
LTS is supposed to be STABLE. Not a massive cluster-fsck.
GNOME 3 isn't much better.
00:08
Did KDE ever get their crap straightened out?
No, it's supposed to be long-term supported. Which means it'll be stable sometime before it's EOL.
Which crap? I've been using KDE since the day GNOME 3 came out.
@MichaelHampton KDE4 came out before Gnome3 did, right? So I guess they did get it sorted. We tried it mid-2009 and it was unusable for us.
Yeah, it's been perfectly usable for quite some time.
So... maybe... Kubuntu 12.04?
@MichaelHampton Maybe. Gonna be a hard sell to go back to KDE just 3 years after we left it behind.
Lawl. Not that hard. I was using KDE before GNOME came out myself.
00:11
@MichaelHampton Yeah, we were a KDE shop for a decade, though maybe 30 people who are still here remember that. Our turnover rate is disgusting.
Anyone with any sense gets the hell out fast?
And that probably should not go into Google.
So the inmates really are running the asylum, eh?
@MichaelHampton Pretty much. Lot of organizational issues that are just unreal.
A surprising # of our people leave due to nervous breakdown.
WhyTF is SO sending us questions with an accepted answer?
Are they actually LOOKING at the question before voting to ship it off?
00:30
I doubt it.
True.
Guess I'm at the irrevocably burnt-out point. Kinda curious to see how far I can push it before I get fired.
Making me a "supervisor", telling everyone that I had no actual authority, and then going away on vacation for 2 weeks is probably his all-time shit move though.
@Adrian Don't let their behavior lower your standards of humanity. Strength from within withstands pressures from without. Consider this your crowning moment to be honorable whilst being dishonored.
@Adrian Wow, was that premeditated to send you a statement, or is that just blind ineptitude?
@WesleyDavid I think part of it is that he understands that he cannot do everything himself but cannot quite let go enough to actually let anyone do it.
logic vs. emotion, and the former always loses to the latter eventually with this guy.
If you keep him talking long enough, he'll eventually contravert what he said originally and decide that the opposite should happen without really coming out and saying it.
My padawan did that rather unintentionally during the announcement where my boss talked about responsibility lists and whatnot for 75 minutes.
They kept pressing him for a statement on whether they reported to him or me, and he eventually said that they report to him and not me, but they're supposed to "take my suggestions in the spirit they were intended."
Meaning they know they can do damn well whatever they please as long as they don't tell me to Fsck off.
@Adrian Well isn't that special.
Feh. Time to get out of here.
Nasty habit of not taking risks and going with known quantities even if they don't meet current needs.
Also means you almost never get a real gem either.
00:46
stretch HTML 5 and JavaScript for days. Time for some dinner.
@WesleyDavid Fancy Feast for the Kitteh. Only the best will do.
One thing I REALLY need to do around here is seperate the NIS Master from being on the same system as the DNS Master.
But I've run out of energy too. So I think I'll walk home.

Q: Mysql and TOR socks proxy

FlashI've tried to setup a proxy for mysql outbound connections using TOR's 9050 port and iptables and I failed. Any ideas how to make things working? Schema: Linux mysql client (or PHP function) -> 127.0.0.1:9050 (TOR socks5) -> remote_mysql_server:3306 Just want to redirect any outbound connectio...

Oh yes, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to pipe 3306 through TOR. Wait, no there aren't.
01:29
I need to name more servers "Kitteh"
01:44
@ewwhite: my first home server was called kitten. In my current home namespace all servers are named after small cute fuzzy animals.
@JourneymanGeek Is one of them "Hobbit"?
not yet
so far, kitten, tamandua
There are legitimate uses for Tor in the enterprise. That is highly unlikely to be one of them.
@MichaelHampton: that is just bizzare
@ewwhite Sup. How's the city treatin' ya.
01:56
@JourneymanGeek Not at all. I have a fairly good idea what he's up to, and it's no good.
@MichaelHampton: care to enlighten me? for knowledge sake of course
@JourneymanGeek Think for a moment about what Tor does to your outgoing traffic. Now consider what MySQL's port 3306 is used for.
@WesleyDavid eh, went out to dinner/drinks in SoHo, then walked 1.5 miles back to my apartment... stopping by the late-night cookie shop en route.
@ewwhite Ohhhh... cookies.
@ewwhite What kind did you get?
snickerdoodles and sugar cookies.
01:58
@MichaelHampton: setting things up so someone can anonymously access mysql?
@JourneymanGeek Yes, and why would someone need to do that?
@ewwhite Sugar crash!!
Consider there are a bunch of MySQL developer tutorials out there that say to set up a MySQL user 'root'@'%' with no password.
@ewwhite Insomnia cookies. Only in NYC
@MichaelHampton: but since someone would need to have access to the system anyway to do set this up...
02:00
@ewwhite So what do you want for the ML370s?
Email me if you want.
I dunno.
Haven't thought about it.
I'll look when i get back to Chicago tomorrow
the system is either run by a idiot, or more compromised than a conservaitive politician on a live web feed to a gay midget brothel...
@JourneymanGeek DEVELOPERS.
@ewwhite kk, let me know. I'll keep pestering you. =O
02:01
@JourneymanGeek So, to put it all together: There are more than one MySQL servers out there with port 3306 open to everywhere on the Internet, with a root user accessible from any IP address with no password.
Using Tor lets one hide the origin of their traffic while they go looking for those servers.
So, talking about conservative politicians... is Romney going to win it?
@ewwhite: depends on who you ask
I think he's gonna need more binders full of women.
02:02
@MichaelHampton Why would you need to look for one of those servers, or conceal your identity while connecting to one? Need a test instance, make a VM, don't use someone else's test instance that you don't control the settings on.
but seems plausible. I'm hearing more personal attacks from the democrat supporting side of things than the latter
but its rather close to call.
@MichaelHampton: I totally don't get the binders full of women meme
Again, do Americans have short memories?
@ShaneMadden You're assuming that this is possibly legitimate. I seriously doubt it. I think the guy seriously asked us for advice on how to go break into someone's box.
54 mins ago, by Shane Madden
Oh yes, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to pipe 3306 through TOR. Wait, no there aren't.
@JourneymanGeek It
@ShaneMadden I presume he's using Tor because he doesn't want to get caught.
02:04
Whoa, why does one only have 5 seconds to edit a message now??
Let's try that again.
@ewwhite: compared to many, yes ;p
I know singaporeans in their late 20s, who STILL hate the japanese for stuff that happened in ww2.
@ewwhite I highly doubt it.
@JourneymanGeek Yet why are people disappointed in Obama?
You get a warning when the time limit to edit a message is about to expire.
@ewwhite the popular vote will be close, but Obama's going to win the electoral college easily
02:06
@JourneymanGeek It's a reference to a line Romney used in the debate on Tuesday. Romney was trying to communicate that he was hiring women in his administration, and he said "binders full of women" when he meant "binders full of resumes from women"
I'm past caring. It seems like we're going to get screwed either way.
@ewwhite: well, he did promise a lot. There's a reason why I hear 'Its not his fault, its the darned republicans in congress' from the liberal side and 'He hasn't kept his promises' on the other
@MichaelHampton Yeah - I hit the up arrow instantly, and it said "4 seconds"
@ShaneMadden The chat system was written by DEVELOPERS.
02:07
@ShaneMadden: ahh
@MichaelHampton Sure, but that's a more recent change, isn't it?
@MichaelHampton: Someone has to do the less important stuff ;p
I'm off to m.SO seeking answers, wish me luck.
I think you've found a bug. I was able to up-arrow edit a message without that.
@ShaneMadden Also: wonkette.com/487052/…
@JourneymanGeek Do you feel let-down?
02:09
@ewwhite: not american
@JourneymanGeek If you were Amurrican, would you feel let-down?
:)
I just hang around 2 diametrically opposite communities, and tend to find them a useful way to gauge political sentiment'
Testing... asdf ... asdf
@ewwhite: yes and no. But i'm 'classic' conservative/libertarian
@ewwhite Caving to the patriot act, standing down from the TSA, gitmo, not touching oppressive DEA practices -- things he promised to one degree or another. So yeah, he seems a let down, but he has had a tough Congress to work with.
02:10
Do people seriously think: Hmm, this Mitt Romney has my interests at heart. He has my vote!
@ewwhite No, they vote party line.
@ewwhite He seems like a complete tool.
@WesleyDavid an unbearable Congress...
@WesleyDavid: not many politicians don't seem like complete tools to me
It let me edit after it said the timeout expired, but the next attempt wouldn't let me begin editing. Time sync issue maybe?
02:11
@JourneymanGeek Point taken. =P
You don't run NTP on your desktop?
question is, is it a complete tool who will make sure I have a job tommorrow?
@WesleyDavid The worlds popular media find him an easy punching bag
or do people say, "my life sux... I want a new administration"?
Whereas the worlds media also love Obama
02:11
@MichaelHampton It's apparently not working, looks like it's about 2 minutes slow. Let's see...
They did a survey in Australia a while ago that said this was our election, Obama would win in an absolute landslide
We'll be happy to export him.
and Australia's not exactly super liberal
@wfaulk Haha we have a "Liberal Party" that are conservative tories
It's a bit of a misleading name
That said I am dissapointed in my current government and will likely vote against them If I am still in singapore in the next election
02:13
@MichaelHampton What makes Romney better than Obama?
@JourneymanGeek I don't know anyone who isn't disappointed in their government
@ewwhite I never said anything like that.
/me utterly disagrees with their current immigration policy, which is aimed at starving off the problems of an aging population by artificial population growth, and a focus on increasing the GDP by any means possible
Isn't Singapore a bloody island?
(I mean, they will come if its a great place to live, we're actually actively recruiting folk)
02:15
If they want more people they're going to have to do a lot more vertical building...
@MichaelHampton: yup. government wants to bump up the population by a million. LOTS of mainland chinese immigrants, who the local Chinese have problems with, and so on
@MichaelHampton just that they're equally bad?
@ewwhite They're each bad in different ways.
@JourneymanGeek There's lots of mainland chinese immigrants everywhere though
One uses Astroglide to screw the country, the other uses K-Y Jelly.
02:16
I don't believe Obama is trying to screw the country. That's a strange thing to say.
@MichaelHampton fwiw I'lll be super sad if Sesame Street is cancelled
Making love, then?
@MichaelHampton: ya, the thing is, generally 'locals' get along. Immegrants who came on their own get along with locals. The ones the government encourages for some fields don't
As much as I try not to let my son watch American television (mainly because of the differences in spelling between our english and your english), he fucking loves Elmo
@ewwhite: Its the economy, really ;p
02:17
I can say that what I saw and participated in while in finance... that screwed the country.
@MarkHenderson: I speak/write english as well as I do due to Sesame Street, warner brother's cartoons, and the Beeb
(and I spell things properly, colo u r not color)
@JourneymanGeek When I went to school there were students who would spell everything the american way, and it shitted me soooo bad.
My son will say "Zed" not "Zee" and will spell things correctly
@MarkHenderson: I think both are accepted here these days
Even the iPhone can't spell correctly
iPhone is american ;)
02:19
@JourneymanGeek Which has an EN-GB setting
Mind you for years and years, EN-AU in Windows would default everything to American style and American dictionary in Word
@MarkHenderson: you expect americans to understand the queen's english? ;p
It was only in about 1995 or 1997 that EN-AU used the EN-GB dictionary
And only in 2000 or so when it got its own dictionary with all our stupid words in it
I understand the queen's english perfectly well. And she can have it.
@JourneymanGeek Well considering that everything I code is written in American english I find that I can switch between the two seamlessly. Writing an email, "colour", writing code, "color"
I expect them to do the same :p
@MichaelHampton So, been drinking tonight?
You seem angry(ier than usual)
02:21
Worse, working.
What's the difference between aussie and GB english?
I mean outside the accent
Oh, there's no difference...
Foster's Beer?
@MichaelHampton Ah, my condolances
@JourneymanGeek Apart from colloquialisms, nothing
@MarkHenderson I wonder if this is offensive...
02:26
@ewwhite Not offensive, just stupid and American. =P
These do seem to stereotype a bit...
@ewwhite I don't think that looks safe to watch at work :P
it is
One more bad one...
Although, I can only imagine what Australians say about US...
@ewwhite I just found that video.
Trust me, it's bad.
02:41
@MichaelHampton yawn...
Yeah, told you so.
How did that get so many views?
Bimbo?
No idea. None at all. But she's probably not lonely anymore.
Is she sitting on the toilet?
@ewwhite Pretty girl. YouTube. == Lots of views. Hope she put her adsense account in before uploading.
02:45

hey @Ward how's it going ?
@Iain I wonder if our reject stats will be different in the future... I've been making a point of finding all the migrations from SO and VTCing the crap. Don't know if they've been getting closed more often now with /Review.
@Ward the stats are already showing an upturn - we're up to 26% rejection from SO now
@Ward The problem is that the powers that be really don't see this as a problem - they just point to 74% are then good

What's the % of migrated and kept open after 3 days, or something?

Oh, my mistake, for @MDMarra's benefit, he haz punctured hiz stripez.
Dell support are dickheads
Why?
"Waiting for Rebuild" is the death-sentence for RAID5 arrays in HP-land.
@ewwhite Yeah, took me a while to figure that out. At least Dell's nice enough to tell you you're fuct instead of leaving an array in "queued waiting for rebuild" status for 3 months. :/
I put in an old drive to replace the HP drive and the errors are gone. — lbanz 1 min ago
13:48
Yeah, the errors are gone, must mean he's safe.
phew
</dripping sarcasm>
Yeah, really, he almost had a serious problem there. Now that the 8 read-write error disks are replaced, and the errors are gone, his 21 disk RAID 5 array is all better, though.

All swell that end swell, right?
Of course!
Jesus. A 4-disk RAID 5 is bad enough, but a 21 disk? derp.
13:52
Yes, that is the one. A bit of googling shows raidtips.com/raid5-ure.aspx. I've lost count on how many times the raid failed to rebuild after I put in a new disk. This is especially the case in my scenario as there were 8 drives that were detected faulty but not failed completely with amber lights yet. — lbanz 4 mins ago

A: Defrag in Windows VM?

MDMarraStorage folks refer to VMs as I/O blenders. This is because all of the guest's files are typically inside of a "container" like a VMDK. This VMDK is a single file that contains all other files used by the VM. Consider that an 80GB VMDK might not have all block allocated sequentially on the disk...

Can anyone figure out what afrazier's comment on my answer here means?
@MDMarra I think he's under the impression that a VM's "hard drive controller" works just like a real one... He's forgetting that it's just software the hypervisor is emulating, or para-virtualizing. So he's thinking when a fragmented file is requested that there's more IOs to retrieve the file... That sorta makes sense anyway, from a confused point of view. =]
Oh
So he thinks that there would need to be two separate seek operations?

@tombull89 I would lobe to set hat up as RAID 0 and then call in a new guy to install the OS. Just to test him (or her)
