00:00
I'm very good at reading FAQs and documentation though :p
00:21
just sayin'
I am a Linux person, i guess... but it seems like certs are very important in MS
@ewwhite Depends on who you work for. I prefer to think that a history of demonstrating the ability to meet goals properly more important than a PDF with your name on it
But I know that they can sometimes be the difference between two otherwise good candidates
@ewwhite Because 10 years ago there were about 50 million "Windows Admins". No other way to discern the skill level.
I'm not exactly the kind of person who jumps from job to job, I've been here for 6 years, straight after graduating, so I haven't had to put my own skills down the job application process very often
I just go by project experience.
This job is pretty demanding, it seems.
when I started I also had almost no skills and have been given plenty of oppertunity to here to expand them (on my own mind you, I fly solo most of the time), so I feel like I owe a lot to my current employer
00:24
so they need a solid Windows DB/virt/scripting/AD type.
I'm very much an all-rounder, so the core technologies there I'm good with, but my scripting might let me down. Depends on what they want
It would have to be one of the best jobs in the world for me to take it though, to be honest
But I'll never say no to at least checking it out, hopefully without wasting too much of anyones time.
of course.
@MarkHenderson It's an intensely personal decision, of course, and tough to make. But there comes a time when it's time to go. I've hit that myself here.
In many respects, I'm rather glad that I've contributed more than I've learned this time around. Feel like I'm making progress.
@Adrian Yes. I'm starting to get itchy feet thinking I've gone as far as I'm going to here, but there's something to be said for a stable job
00:45
@Adrian Adrian would do well here.
Not to be redundant, but just to clarify.. Ubuntu 12.04 would be compatible, for example? — Xspence 8 mins ago
hmm, isn't that a really specific question?
@ewwhite Heh. My neighbor's trying to get me hooked up with some friends that run a local consulting firm. Just waiting on Wesley's recruiter to finesse up a swedt resume.
and wouldn't the right thing be to throw it in a lab, test everything and try to burn it down?
@Adrian I do resume editing as well.
I'll keep that in mind. Had no idea.
00:54
mmhmm
01:40
@ewwhite Good Lord. Just read through that Q. I'd do great right up until I went postal.
02:04
@Adrian Oh? Was it that bad?
Just having a look at this HP VSA appliance if we decide to go with the Lefthand solution. It's seriously cool.
Probably not as cool as Nexenta, @ewwhite, but cool nevertheless ;P
@MarkHenderson I just feel like 1GbE SAN is wack!
But Lefthands work just fine.
decent protection.
but the thing is... it's really just a ProLiant DL180 G6 with disks and Linux SAN software.
no caching of real note.
no SSD tiering
but good protection options
@ewwhite Yes, I know I know, it's whack and it's weak. In fact I swore I'd never do another 1Gb iSCSI network again. Until I saw the price. The priiiiiicceeeeeeeee
And our budget which is a bit rubbish :P
@MarkHenderson I could build you a Nexenta cluster on the same hardware for less.
@ewwhite Any idea how much the CDP plugin is for Nexenta?
02:14
@MarkHenderson nobody buys it
@ewwhite Then I must be missing something
How do you do off-site replication of iSCSI volumes?
:)
one moment
@mark It's built-in.
Quick replication:
Between different data centers asynchronously through the use of a new Layer 5 multi-connection, multi-destination, multi-pathing protocol.
So it's volume-level async replication
Hmmmmm
Maybe I'm not as good at reading as I thought
No, it's a built-in feature
it's the same thing as ZFS send/receive
with some scheduling and auto-pruning wrapped around it
02:35
@ewwhite Ahh i did read that, but I just assumed it was for raw file system replication
As in, not a locked iSCSI volume but rather files exposed directly to the underlying filesystem
it does both
03:25
:o has expert-sexchange removed the ability to spy on answers?
03:40

Systems Administrator - London - £24k to £32k at Byng Systems

We seek a System administrator to co-manage a network of web, email, database, DNS, backup and both physical and virtual Linux servers. They will work with our Technical Director…

Posted on Careers 2.0 on September 21, 2012

jaw drop
Prostitute wanted, $3 to $7 at my home.
Considering London prices, isn't that about what bartenders and waitresses get paid there?
Yeah, it's ridiculously low. (I think it might even be below what you'd make as a decent waitress or bartender in London, if memory serves.)

Low in general, but ridiculously low for a high-priced locale like London.
@ewwhite So, how awful an idea would it be to try to hold down a telecommute job and a regular job? For no particular reason, not that it pertains to me, I kinda doubt I could pull it off anyway... etc.
@HopelessN00b Sounds like complete hell to me. Bad enough working 1 demanding job, but 2? Ugh.
04:01
@Adrian Yeah, it does. Then again, a $100k+ telecommute job? For a guy living in Ohio? If I could keep it together for the 18-24 months the current employer is working this project... it could work out amazingly well for me. End up with a couple hundred grand burning a hole in my pocket, for a couple years of no sleep + no life... well, like I said, it's some degree of awful as far ides go, but incredibly tempting at the same time.
@HopelessN00b I suppose. Not sure it's worth wrecking yourself for though.
@HopelessN00b So you'll graduate into being a wealthy douche. You'll be a real hit with all the women that I could never have :p
@Adrian Well, I've worked some real shit environments, with >80 hours a week, and for a lot less than 100k, never mind an extra 100k, so... I mean damn, it's tempting. Wonder if I would end up wrecking myself.
@MarkHenderson Damn straight. No more just acting like/pretending to be a wealthy douche to hit it off with the hot, whory gold-digging types. Would that qualify as personal growth, seeing as how it's more honest on my part?
@HopelessN00b I do it because my consulting has been consistent for the past 4 years... full-time jobs, not so much.
@HopelessN00b I guess so, in some strange way
04:10
As for salary, I haven't made less than $100k since I was 23, I think...
so there's a desire to always move forward.
the consulting and hosting work i do is a good cushion...
@Iain 14 upvotes, 3 down, but 3 moderators (including 2 employees) say it's not necessary.
it gives confidence in the workplace because you're not worried about what happens on the job.
I mean, I'm up now... on a Sunday, helping first-line NOC support work through some Linux issues.
The extra $$ doesn't hurt my motivation... it just gives a lot of insurance.
And in this economy... you'd be silly to pass up a good additional source of income.
Heh. Well, you're definitely making good on your promise to do a little recruiting for the new bosses.

Guess I'll crack out the resume/CV and actually update in a not-half-assed-fashion for the first time in like 5 years, and ping you soon if I decide the extra cash warrants a couple years of hell, and that I'd be likely to make it through intact. :)
@HopelessN00b I think this is an interesting position... but in general, I actually modify my employment contracts to make provisions for my consulting work and intellectual property.
@Ward Hence what I said earlier. Unless it benefits SO, it's not a priority.
04:18
@ewwhite Yup, I do the same. Don't usually get more pushback than a raised eyebrow either, so why not?
@Adrian So, proposed solution, start migrating all shit questions to SO?
@HopelessN00b The volume there is so high I'm not sure they'd even notice if we migrated every question posted on SF over.
:6257692 O? Why? I'm always way upfront about that. Helps level-set expectations and all that.
@Adrian We've all got (or cant get) SU accounts, right?
employers don't necessarily need to know that.
So I'm heavily invested now.
Three colos, $100k in servers and storage.
and it still pays off
Because I don't spend that much time managing clients.
and I don't want to be stagnant.
04:23
Found out the policy where I work is that all side work income is supposed to be surrendered to my (non-profit) employer. How bullshit is THAT?
Ah, so I've just been doing it wrong all along. Fair 'nuff. :)
for instance, I know nothing about databases, web applications or the stuff every other business outside of financial trading does.
@Adrian Sounds like an opportunity to me. Rip off the mob, or a drug dealer, drop the duffel bag of cash on the boss's desk... take a couple months vacation, and let everything sort itself out.
@HopelessN00b Yeah, that one sealed the deal. I'm checking out of there at the first reasonable offer. No need to take a crap position to pay the bills, but I'm more than done.
@Adrian Should I find the NOC engineer salary here?
04:27
@ewwhite Nah. The GF said NO to NYC. Fine place to visit, not her style to live there.
haha
okie
it would suit you, though
except I think they have 12 hour shifts.
for 3 days on... 4 days off
I dunno. 4 10s would be sweet, but not sure about 3 12s. I hated working 12s even after I got out of school.
Damn, I would love 3 12's. No one in this stupid city seems to get the value of flex time or non-standard shift schedule, though. <sighs>
@HopelessN00b Thats because you don't have a family, or anyone who loves you
haha
04:33
If I worked 12 hour days my son would go batshit insane, which would cause my wife to leave me
Well, if I worked them regularly anyway
@MarkHenderson Bingo.
:p

Not it at all, especially give that I work ~5 10's at the moment anyhow.
@HopelessN00b I work 5x10 as well, but it's those 2 hours in the evening that make all the difference
I can come home, make dinner, do bath and bedtime which gives her a bit of a break rather than her having to do it all on her own
@MarkHenderson but 3 12 hour days, not 5. It's almost like a firefighter/police/emergency services shift schedule.
Rather than come home after a 12 hour shift, go "fuck this", beat my wife and go to bed leaving her to pick up the broken pieces of our home nad put the kids to bed
04:35
@MarkHenderson Well on a schedule like that, your wife would take half the week, and you could take everything kid-related for the other half. It can work out really well.
Might not be perfect, but that's one of the problems with breeding. :p
@HopelessN00b yeah cos what I want after working 3x12 hour days at work is 4x12 hour days with the kids :p
This way I do 5x10 at work and 5x3hrs at home, plus weekends
I'm happy enough with my current routine. Plus I have saturdays down to almost by-the-minute routine
Makes planning easy
And everyone knows what to expect
*<shudder>*

All the more reason for me (and everyone else) to avoid HopelessN00b-spawn being created anywhere.
@MarkHenderson I really don't think I want kids anymore. I dunno. Maybe I'm just in an anti-social mood today -- or this week -- or this... life.
I know the feeling
04:43
Hmm... I think I could really fall in love with the telecommuting-for-a-living thing, though. Got my Dew, some good punk cranked up, no pants on, and am doing my SA thing TSed into a bunch of boxes at work now.

Is there actually a downside to this, @ewwhite ?
@ewwhite Yeah? gone back and forth on it?
I've never spawned a mini-wesley.
@WesleyDavid Yeah, I think I was just lucky to be hell on my parents, and self-aware enough to realize it from a young age. I've always been of the that sounds like a regimen of swift kicks in the fun bags opinion on having kids.
@HopelessN00b Keeping it straight... but I did this all throughout my time in finance.
@WesleyDavid I didn't think I wanted them either. In fact when my wife told me I almost had a fucking breakdown
I'd much prefer daughters to sons, though. Sons would scare me, seeing me all over again.
04:44
But you know what? Kids are fucking awesome
@WesleyDavid Traditionally men actually prefer daughters
I have my daughters' names all picked out. The wife has no choice. Agree or I sick the lawyers on her to take everything away.
Although we get all macho about our sons, we like girls better
Kids are great, I wished I'd started earlier and had more than one.
The first shall be Brünnhilde Shieldmaiden David
04:46
And I really do have that set of names in my "Children's names" document on my computer.
@Ward You are a better man than me in all possible ways of metering it.
@WesleyDavid especially if its a boy.
Hmm. I always have an easier time keeping shit straight when I'm remote. Got my desk set up how I like, with more monitor real-estate than is reasonable, integration with all my personal organization stuff, no asshats dropping in to interrupt me...

It's the shit I have to put up with at the office that always throws me for a loop.
@JourneymanGeek Boys will be adopted out.
04:47
Apparently I have lucky DNA
@HopelessN00b The other key is face time.
I am slated to go in once a month for a week.
Second daughter: Skuld Laevateinn David
Third: Norn Mistilteinn David.
They will all be trained in swordsmanship.
We took our daughter to the ER one time with something that turned out to be minor. Everyone else there had boys and 3/4 of them had bloody facial gashes.
@ewwhite There it is, that would be the drawback. People don't see your face, they start to wonder who the hell you are, and why they give you money. Stupid... psychology, or something.
@Ward: I think we once brought someone to the hospital after a one floor fall
04:49
@Ward hahaha my wife wouldn't trust me that close to the water on a bike. She'd think I'd try to do a wheelie and lose us all into the water.
@HopelessN00b And yes, that's why I send clients updates weekly at the most, call people on the phone, and list my time out very meticulously in timesheets with exactly what I've done.
And it was a boy in my daughter's class two years ago who ran into a wall resulting in bloody facial gashes. Girls just aren't that dumb...
(actually not that bad, one heck of a facial scar)
And she'd probably be right.
I try to work on projects that are very visible.
04:50
@Ward Haha I dunno, girls can do some dumb shit. Like telling boys that they're smelly and they don't like them, even though they secretly have a crush on them
Can't do wheelies on a tandem...
@Ward: might be a cultural thing. Any future geeklets will be encouraged to climb trees, simply cause I never did. The one scary scar I have, I got walking into a street sign.
@MarkHenderson: guys do that too ;p
@Ward See, now, thats what my wife woudl say. But it would be worth a shot, right?
@MarkHenderson Was it you that was saying that your son is in the top 2% size-wise? Gonna be a seven footer?
@MarkHenderson: even if you can't, trying would be glorious
04:51
@JourneymanGeek Hah, nice one. I have quite a few scars, some from manly shit (had a car chassis cut my knee open, smashed through a glass wall), some from stupid shit (walking into the aluminum strip on a door), and some from negligance (a massive ugly mother fucker scar on my knee from a botched surgery)
@Ward Not with pedal power, but if you strap a chainsaw engine on and lower the gear ratio...
@WesleyDavid He has fallen to the top 5% :(
But yes, he will be 6'2"+
@MarkHenderson NOOOOOOO!!!
@WesleyDavid Ohh yeah that could work
@WesleyDavid Waste of a perfectly good chainsaw that would be better used hacking trees down.
04:52
No doubt. Nothing nicer than a geeky tomboy type with a scar from something cool.

I did all the contact sports, the playing with guns and jumping out of airplanes, etc, and all my scars are from bullshit. Slipping on the ice curling, got smacked by a sliding van door, had a big icicle crack my melon, etc. *<sigh>*

Not that I admit it when I'm chatting up a chick at the bar, but it's bloody irritating.
@MarkHenderson Did I tell you about the guy I worked with, who himself was a decently tall fellow (about 6'3) and his wife had big brothers - he had six sons that were all measured and speculated by their measurements and etc. to be all between 6'6 to 6'10. And wow were they big. The 12 year old was almost my size.
@WesleyDavid They say that you should take their height at age 2 and double for a guestimate. He was 95cm at age 2, which comes in just over 6'2"
@WesleyDavid Holy shit, that's big
Not just tall, these kids were built like bulldozers.
And who the fuck has 6 sons? After the 3rd boy I'd just chop my balls off
Hell if I know how he kept them all fed.
04:54
@WesleyDavid My boss has 6, but it's 5 boys + 1 girl
He also had one daughter. So you know she'll be well protected. Of course, she was also a tank...
6 boys though, nope
@JourneymanGeek I'm protective (being an older dad with just one kid), but I want her out doing stuff. My wife was unhappy when she climbed a pretty big tree this summer, but I figured the branches would break her fall.
@Ward Right, and if not the branches then the ground for sure.
@Ward: urban kid, ultra geeky. I notice white kids climb trees more than asian ones, which is a pity
(my parents definately did go on fruit tree raids back in the day)
04:56
Hey folks.
Oh, fuckin'... anyone know the command to install an existing license file into DataProtector off the top of their head? Freaking useless turd.
What's the general theme of this room?
On StackOverflow, the rooms are divided by language/technology
@Moshe Insulting eachother, cursing the TSA, and occasionally discussing dog balls.
2
And bitching about Markdown.
@WesleyDavid Lol
Ok, anyone here good with algorithms?
04:59
Roight, just the what-the-hell-ever comes to mind room. SF isn't big enough to have a bunch of rooms. This is the everything room.
1
Q: Algorithm for ordering points on a map?

MosheI have an array of points, where each point is a coordinate on a map. I'd like to make it so that when I add a point to the map, it's added to my array in between the closest two points. Additionally, I'd like to render the points, so that there are never any crossovers between the different poi...

Fuck you Wesley, don't try to hide that this is all about cross-dressing!
@Ward He's gotta hide it since he lives in Arizona. It's only in the Free-Lovin' Hippie Zone here in Cascadia that we can get our summer dresses on.
@Moshe Hah, that looks like something I'd look up in a CS textbook, if I still had any of my old ones.
05:00
@HopelessN00b I'm in a data structures course.
@Ward Cross-dressing is probably one of the more virtuous things we speak of in here.
I do lubs me some prettiful spike heels...
@Moshe Sorry about your luck. My answer would be along the lines of ~go ask a developer, I'm just the SA. Now eff off so I can go back to sleep, and if you wake me up from a nap again, you'll be sorry.
lol
The users pester me before coffee and some bitches are getting cut
Most of my co-workers are smart enough to leave me alone until I'm caffeinated. Mostly NYers. It's the dippie hippies that get growled at and then get their panties all wadded up.
@Adrian Well, getting is probably better than have gotten, right? Whiny bitches, though... like it doesn't even need stitches, why t he frack are you calling HR and the cops and all that shit? Learn your lesson from last time, stupid user.
And, now I gotta call up HP support again about this piece of shit they convinced our CTO is backup software.
Speaking of some "bitches are getting cut," and all...
05:10
Oddly, my .org is nearly half East Coast folks. Both boss and grand-boss from NJ but not sure what exits.
@HopelessN00b Dude! You're getting a star! Better than getting a Dell...
@Moshe Isn't that an A* or something?
@Adrian What time do you report for duty tomorrow?
@Adrian Oh hey, did you make it to the wedding?
@WesleyDavid 9ish but I walk to work, so probably leaving here around 7:30am. 4 mile walk to the train.
@MarkHenderson I'm now learning about something called a "convex hull"
@WesleyDavid Yep. padawans stepped up and the fscker rebooted sweet as pie. Only seems to hang when I reoot the damn thing.
05:12
@Adrian You shitting me? I so prefer Dells to HPs. The hardware's all commoditized these days, and Dells have this novel feature called management software, that actually $@#$ing works.
@Adrian That's really the root of all my problems too. None of my users are me.
@HopelessN00b Actually, yes. I'd be happy with Dells too. Boss doesn't like Dell because he considers them a consumer brand. So we're trying HP instead.
@WesleyDavid Gonna be Puppet'ing ALL THE THINGS over the next few weeks immersion-style.
@Moshe Hmm ok. I really know shit all about algorithms/maths but I know some buzzwords
And by 'immersion' I don't mean holding my boss' head underwater either. I could see how you'd get confused.
@Adrian And the mystery of why you're looking for a new job deepens once again. :/
05:14
@MarkHenderson lol
@Adrian I'd love to dive into puppet. I have to focus though. My biggest problem is I want to learn all the things and I end up learning nothign of substance because I'm a mile wide and an inch deep.
@WesleyDavid amen. Puppet's an immediate need around here though. ALL the postings are for Puppet-style DevOps sysadmins, so I need to tow the line.
Puppet during the day and CCNA studying in the evenings.
@Adrian (toe the line) </pedantic>
@WesleyDavid smooch Typed that one like that just for you. =D
@Adrian CCNA! FRACK YEAH! Keep that up - it'll help you bail into a better paying position
05:18
Also, Dell support is NOT an elaborate social experiment in testing how far you can push people before making them homicidal, which is an other advantage Dell has over HP.
I know no one works at a NPFT for the money (I've worked at a few, and still contract to one), but still... it's nice to get full market, for-profit wages. You're worth a lot. Sometimes, after years of lower-than-market wages, you start to believe that you're worth less.
The GF posits that making users homicidal is the goal of ALL Tech Support groups.
@Adrian She knows too much. She has to be... dealt with.
@WesleyDavid Aye. At the very least so that you're not working WITH people that can't find their ass with both hands.
Make a visual basic GUI to track her IP.
05:20
@WesleyDavid Nah. She did a tour of duty with GroupHealth way back when. She's been through the wars.
And @Adrian's brain just popped out of gear. Time for bed.
G'nite Gents.
Yes, they're too busy using both of their hands to install the handy-dandy shipment tracking program attached to the nice email that FedEx just sent them which normally wouldn't be able to be installed, except their two hands were engaged in flailing pitifully at the IT department to let them install Arcade Pinball IX because after all they're in the C-level and you're very not in the C-level.

Speaking from experience? Noooo...
@Adrian May you dream of sub-millisecond latency.
@WesleyDavid You dream about rolling out infiniband too?
05:39
I still dream of residential FIOS coming to my crappy state. :(
@HopelessN00b You and me both
welp, least I'm not the only one, then.
@HopelessN00b Except we call ours "NBN"
We're moving into their 12-month rollout zone, which is nice, otherwise you're up to about 3-5 year wait
Scheduled for August 2013 for me
no9
no9
@HopelessN00b good morning
will you by any chance get some time to help me out with that certificates issue?
@no9 Maybe. Kinda of dealing with a bunch of fires at the place that pays me (which would be why I'm not sleeping now, sigh), but unless any new ones start up, probably find time this afternoon (it's 2AM here at the moment.)
@no9 Oh, that's right, I forgot to favorite your question. Could you post the link for me here, so I don't have to search for it?
06:04
Does anyone else get shudders when they start the download of printer software labelled "HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver"
no, I want to kill people.
And the most concerning thing - the version that's "just" the printer driver is 241mb
well, more than usual anyway
I feel dirty when downloading anything that starts with HP, actually.
@MarkHenderson: bloated printer drivers are really common these days
06:05
@JourneymanGeek been common since the rise of the MFC
All I want is to be able to scan to a fucking network share
For example, this $6,000 Elitebook that's less reliable than my $400 Dell netbook/tablet thing. Fuck HP.
This is the 2nd time I've been through this with this shitty software
6
Q: Fake USB connectivity for a virtual machine?

Mark HendersonI am trying to install the network software for a HP printer inside a virtual machine that's running Windows XP Professional that has no USB connectivity - it doesn't even have USB drivers present. This is OK, because I'm trying to connect to the printer over the network. However, the HP install...

And why do websites still quote download times on 56k?
Who has 56k and downloads 300mb printer drivers?
Legacy support... same reason upper management exists, the dark ages before technology made such things obsolete.
Gawd, dammit, HP's shit just wiped out a couple hours of work too. Death to HP.
"Dear HP support, how is it possible for your shit to suck so much?

Sincerely yours,

The guy looking at you through a high-powered rifle scope."
@HopelessN00b I once saw an email come into Cisco support "Fuck you! Three step process for getting wireless drivers my asshole. Tell your marketing department to shove my data up their asses" and his account was just full of "fuck you" in every field
And to be fair, getting wireless drivers back then was like getting blood from a stone
@MarkHenderson Yeah, sounds like something I'd have done when I was younger, before I graduated to very thinly veiled death threats.
06:16
Looks liek HP still sucks the big fat hairy aids-infested monkeyballs
I click "network installation" and I'm prompted with that screen 5 seconds later
They just can't even fathom that a computer withotu USB might try to print to a network printer
Jesus fucking Christ. I'll be right back. I'm gonna drop a steaming turd on this PoS laptop so it's ready for me to RMA it in the morning.
@HopelessN00b's advice for every seasoned IT professional: Always drink 5 red bull and vodkas before starting any hardware support
Depends on the vendor, in my experience. With HP, at least 5.
07:09
G'day
@Moshe entirely the wrong site
08:06
@Ward it's not a problem for SO, so it's not a problem :(
morning all
Say, does anyone have an online link to an MS document where they say "don't use split-horizon/split-brain DNS?"
I got a couple hours to get this PIR/RCA in, and if I can find such a link, I think I have a good shot at getting the bosses to abandon the split DNS configuration that they're trying to push on the new domain setup.
@HopelessN00b maybe not quite what you are looking for but.. (2/3 of the way down) - msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms954396.aspx
Thanks, I'll use that if I can't find something explicit and... <sigh> in small enough words for upper management.
@HopelessN00b and if technet will convince them, try - techrepublic.com/blog/networking/…
08:18
Yeah, we just have the one internal zone... well, mostly... so I was looking for that thing I read where they explicitly say "don't use company.local, use subdomain.company.tld"

So much fucking e-paperwork. Just lemme do my computer geek thang and take my word for it, you dumbasses... isn't that why you're paying me way too much? *<sobs>*
if you want RFC to say not to use *.local i'm sure there is one
sometimes, management thinks they know better... unfortunately.
Not so much don't use *.local (we use *.prv), but use a non-externally routed subdomain of the "main"/externally-facing domain for your internal usage.
@ColdT I'm an hourly contractor/consultant, so it's not unfortunate (I'm making a not-so-small fortune in overtime because they think they know better), as much as it's annoying.
if you going to have internal and external domain, you certainly should use split brain... only makes logical sense to increase security
Nah, security's why you have a firewall and don't route internal subnets/VLANs to the outside world.

No need to make things needlessly complex for "security." Security isn't synonymous with inconvenience unless you work for the government.
good luck getting your 2nd dns setup and finding the right documents to convince them
08:29
Yeah, it's probably a long shot, but what the hell, right?

Unless... that *is* actually the recommendation, right? Your internal clients use an internal, not publicly accessible DNS server on subdomain.company.tld, while DNS to the rest of the world is served from a public-facing nameserver that just doesn't include the subdomain DNS zone, right?

I'm not getting that wrong, am I?
Dammit, more reading and research to make sure I've got shit right in my head. I hate that.
08:45
It is generally recommended that you have seperate DNS for internal requests and external requests. So that the internal hold both the internal and external records BUT the external holds ONLY external records
Yes, that is my understanding, which I'm furiously double checking to make sure is accurate.

Seems like @LucasKauffman or @Chopper3 would know the answer and be certain of it... *<clears throat in their direction>*
you rang
@Chopper3 you need to rename yourself as lighteningFast!
what's the query?
Split horizon/split brain DNS - not recommended, right?
Should use a subdomain off the externally facing one, and internal DNS server containing internal and external DNS entries, while the externally facing DNS servers only contain externally accessible name records... right?
08:49
depends on the stability and management of each side - for instance at [main client] they have some of the most stable internal AND external DNS services I've ever come across (big part of their business), so when I VPN into them I've certainly never ran into any problems - but if you're shifting around then yes there can be some big problems yes
Yeah, trying to get the company off of split brain with company.prv and company.com onto... subdomain.company.com with an internally accessible DNS structure to include all entries, and the external nameservers to exclude the internal subdomain zone records.

Kind of a big AD/DNS fuckup last week because of their split-horizon setup (and all the other stupid shit going on too, natch'.)
Wanted to make sure I wasn't talking/thinking out of my ass first, though. Usually helps to not do that.

hello hello
ahoy, hoy.
just spent last week moving to the beautiful historic city of Ghent, Belgium
@KennyRasschaert Oh lovely, I live Belgium a lot, spent a week in Bruges the other year, great place
yeah, medieval cities are awesome
in the original sense of the word
@HopelessN00b you pinged?
09:15
Yeah, but I think Chopper beat ya to the punch. :)
@KennyRasschaert used to live in Chester, which is kind of similar
right, back later, barrage of tests ahoy!
@KennyRasschaert you wanted to be there when all Facbars opened :P
@LucasKauffman Facbars, such a 'leuven'-thing :D
@BartDeVos beer at 1 euro, duvel at 1.5 and whiskey at 2, I'm not complaining :D
True, True..
09:18
you dont have facbars in Gent?
@LucasKauffman We do, and we don't. We have a ton of places, filled with students (member of a fraternity or not), but they aren't called facbars...
but most important, are they cheap?
Yes, they are :)
I heard the student night live in Gent is a lot better than in Leuven
Heh.

`C'mon baby, don't be afraid/If it wasn't for date rape, I'd never get laid.`

Bet the bastards at work would complain if I blasted my Pandora in my cube. :(
09:24
Same prices as you said :)
@LucasKauffman From what i've seen, it's not that different
But you do have 2 locations where you can go
most of them go to 'overpoort' :)
Leven is more spread out
I should do a barcrawl in the overpoort
@KennyRasschaert I got some tshirts for that, if you want
name of every bar in overpoort with a checkbox and a place to put the number of beers
(I'm in there somewhere)
the guy leaning dangerously to the right (read: falling over) in the back?
09:34
Uhu, that's me
@Chopper3 - saw the ad for YouView last night - looks good. So it's basically iPlayer-ITVPlayer-4OD in a box?

Q: I hear a "click" sound when I close a tab in Chrome

Simon J.You know the click sound you used to hear when browsing and clicking links in IE? I hear that exact sound when I close a tab on chrome. I click close, the tab closes, there's a short delay, like 1 second and then "click." Anyone know something about it? I've never noticed it before and I find it...

Q: How do I turn off the click sound when closing a tab in chrome?

nosEvery time I close a tab in Chrome, it makes a click sound. How do I turn off that sound? I reported that issue back in Oct 2010. The problem doesn't appear on all clients and the reason is still unclear. Common attempts at solving the issue include simply turning off the sound in Windows. But ...

Q: Using wget in conjunction with an OpenID Login

PekkaI have a (legit) edge case where I would like to download a web page using any command line tool, but the web page needs an OpenID login to show the content I need. wget supports basic auth and FTP, but I can't think of a sane way to use it in conjuction with an OpenID login. The only way I can ...

Otherwise these folks may be up to the task :P

Anyone know offhand what button(s) to push to make a Mac Mini PXE boot?
@ChrisS I was thinking that if you held down option during boot it would broadcast for network boot as part of the discovery?
Slight other problem, Windows keyboard.... So which button is "option"? =]
