@coredump it was meant for someone else
I'm a GroundWork Open Source snob. Makes Nagios not suck.
:)
But it's mainly because I like russian programmers
@Jacob :(
I pretty much tell people to use the one they like.
It's the only right answer to the question, IMHO.
I tell people to use anything but nagios
23:01
@coredump =) =P ?
Nagios left me butthurt

Q: e-mail no longer coming to aol inbox since I opened a Hotmail account

DaveI recently set up an email account with Hotmail. I have used AOL e-mail for years and would like to keep this as my main source for sending/receiving e-mail. When I set up the Hotmail account there was an option to have all my e-mail accounts forwarded to the Hotmail inbox. I set up this optio...

hehehheehheehehheeehe
where did this come from?
Now that's an enterprise level question!
out for the day, take it easy everyone.
Too bad we can't be sarcastic on answers...
later spiff
23:03
@SpacemanSpiff I was like WTF that doesn't require you to read the FAQ you'd now if you looked at the URL( its off topic) . :)
I'm only using Nagios because I can't get in our SCOM love at work
Did anyone hear about reconnoiter?
@ITHedgeHog How's that? You can't get it or those who run it won't let you use it?
I am interested in testing it
@WesleyDavid It runs on our internal network, and I'm primary on our perimeter network - the SCOM owner doesn't want to see my systems in his SCOM install
23:07
@coredump And yes. Jason Dixon aka Obfuscirity worked on the Circonus project, which is hosted Reconnoiter.
Want me to see if I can pull him in here?
@WesleyDavid that would be cool
Reconnoiter has some stuff that really makes sense
like trend analysis
I also like a lot the OmniTI guy... Theo Schossomethingnagle
schlossnagle
Reconnoiter does look interesting
Yeah, it looks good.
OmniTI is one of the places I will eventually send my resume
you never know
23:10
@coredump Looks like an awesome place to work. You can ask Jason when/if he gets here.
<3 SF
Are there any Nagios certifications?
I guess that was a LMGTFY moment
I'm off, time for some admin shut eye
later! Stay prickly. ;)
Hm. Chance of snow later this week. Fun times.
23:18
@coredump Jason will be in here in a few minutes. He's driving home with Pizza at the moment. ;)
@WesleyDavid thank you, sir, you're most kind.
73F here.
Where are you?
oh hai
Wewt. Jason @obfuscurity Dixon, meet @coredump - a few of us were talking about Nagios kinda sucking and then Reconnoiter / Circonus came up.
We think it is a Right Thing (tm)
Nagios is awesome.
23:21
@Warner see the phrase starred to the side :)
@obfuscurity Hey!
I'm sorry. They sell support... ;p
hiya
sup
Pardon if I'm an ig-no-ramus, but Circonus is in essence hosted reconnoiter?
yes
+ fault-detection/notifications + capacity-planning
and other "nice stuff"
Thought so, but it wasn't totally clear.
23:23
and a much better interface
I was going to ask if reconnoiter is already production-level, but CIrconus kinda answer it
and an API
reconnoiter is collection agents + crappy (imho) php UI
Yeah, Circonus looked prettier. Reconnoiter is like the ugly sister that I have to be a wingman on.
yeah, last test I did reconnoiter was not very userfriendly to configure
23:24
So Circonus is more than just hosted reconnoiter then. I mean, is it almost like a fork?
Does the Circonus team do things that don't get put back into Reconnoiter?
@obfuscurity is the circonus interface going to be available some day? :P
Circonus pricing: "SMS usage will be billed out at our cost + $0.01" = WIN!
Nice that it's not a price tier of features, and only number of metrics.
@obfuscurity how is reconnoiter dev going? The lists seem a little dead.
I think he's probably nomming his pizza. ;)
Tought that too
23:31
And damn but if I'm not in love with the Circonus interface. I want the design team that made that interface to design my own control panel when I get my company rolling.
oops, scrolled on me
Circonus isn't a fork
it's built on top of reconnoiter
reconnoiter is the collection engine (stratcond, noitd's)
ohhh, okay
any reconnoiter modifications get rolled back to open source
but not stuff built on top
e.g. fault detection, notifications,
and a couple exceptions like Google Analytics and NewRelic import agents
okay, that makes sense now.
and I'm proud to say I had a lot of input on the UI
I wasn't the main designer, but I had a lot of influence on UX
23:34
@obfuscurity You done good.
danke
why the hell is pastebin.ca still down?
hey folks. Sorry if this isn't welcome here, but where (other than careers.stackoverflow, which I'm already on) do people look for IT jobs?
I'm posting one, not looking :)
dice.com
wesley: I'm installing a local pastebin.
for whatever reason, pastebin.ca apparently crapped out last night
and I just /happened/ to need it /today/
there's careers.serverfault.com
23:38
really? there's a serverfault career site
and I didn't know it
not sure how or if resumes on stackoverflow are shared on serverfault
fucking pastebin.ca (github) deep-links a lot of static files (css/img) to their own site.
oh nm, discussion has changed :)
But Dice.com is the best big IT work job posting board I've seen.
@obfuscurity random, unrelated conversations make this chat room feel more like a real IT department. Carry on.
I will start searching there. Still trying to exit this country using my skills
23:41
@BillWeiss, occasionally craigslist
oh hai Bill
small fucking world
spews beverage over desk
Craigslist?
@BillWeiss I missed your name the first time
I do admit I've looked for gigs on there.
how do we keep running into each other :)
23:42
Well, for level 1 techs. If you are looking for a head IT guy, maybe not
WesleyDavid: that's the same as careers.stackoverflow, right
?
fuck, nm
I'm an idiot
mind is spinning, too much php today
this would be the perfect time to code some perl
obfuscurity: I was going to say, who are you? :) I'd believe it, but I don't recognize the nick
yeah, I want to avoid CL, SN ratio sucks
@BillWeiss You know, I'm not sure. It's almost as if careers.SF.com is just a premade search for admin jobs on the larger SO site.
what I posted on SO is on careers.SF
so, yay
23:44
nm, I see your job listing on careers.SF so yeah.
I think we've used the 37signals board before as well
Last few times we have tried, to hire in the last couple years, hardly anybody seems to apply. I don't get why people don't want to work in a nice small town like Anacortes.
but that's mostly for developers?

23:45
@Zoredache don't tempt me. I am up for almost any place.
except places at war or extreme religions.
OooO?
23:46
I like the sound of jobs.linux.com
have any of you used it?
Not I, said the cat.
Linux Foundation made it, I think.
No openings at the moment. Layoffs may even be likely if the state decides that we are the thing to cut from the budget.
@Zoredache Yeah. We're fearing that ax as well.
also, if any of you are in Chicago (or willing to move yourself here, it's nice!), well, look at the above job ad :)
@BillWeiss what ad?
sorry, found it :)
that's me, hiring
@BillWeiss I did. No car :P
jobs.linux.com is cool
that's ok!
they even have the option to WARN you that you're on the wrong country
23:49
I don't have one either, Zipcar takes care of me
the company even covers some or all of it
oh, well
hmph
I can't help with the wrong country thing :)
hehe
ok, off to code something
Hey @obfuscurity thanks for the info on recon
23:52
np
honestly, I would look at Graphite if you're not interested in commercial solutions.
it does a lot of what Circonus does, minus the SaaS benefits and edge features.
that's probably what I'll end up deploying at my new place.
@obfuscurity will do.
@obfuscurity is it related to reconnoiter?
well
time to give the missus some attention
@WesleyDavid I think it's a lab
old school
@coredump no, it's not related to reconnoiter
it was a similar system developed by Orbitz and released as open source
