@mgorven I give about one or two hours warning with my own comment. "Better put that in answer form or your rep is mine, sucker!"
Do you get offended when you fix someones problem and they say "Ohh, it works now" as if it's some great surprise?
I make an effort to say "Hey, thanks for that, it works now" sincerely. Saying "Oh, it works!" is a bit like saying "Well, I didn't really think you could fix it and I thoguht I was wasting my time talking to you, so this is a pleasant surprise. Cocksucker."
@MarkHenderson Never thought about it that way. I also never thought about correlating the size of a woman's genitalia to the size of her brother's genitalia until you came along. You're just full of new things, arentcha!
@WesleyDavid What can I say, I'm a thought provoker
@MarkHenderson Oh you provoke things, alright.
if I'm provoking an erection, just uhh, put it into the spank bank for later
05:05
And seriously Apple. No wireless N on even the latest iPhone but the iPad 1 could do it.
Suckers.
@MarkHenderson: Not really, I just answer "Of course it did!"
Especially when i have notihing to do with ot
@WesleyDavid saywhat? I thought that iPhone 4s had 5Ghz N?
Shit a brick, it only has N 2.4Ghz
(but that's still N)
But I swear that on all those big tech sites where they writeup their wifi experiences from massive conferences, they set up dedicated 5ghz routers and were all "yay" when everyones iPhone defaulted to the 5Ghz range?
But now that you mention it, I have a 2.4 and a 5Ghz "N" at home, and the iPad does the 5Ghz but the iPhone doesn't, so i guess I knew that all along and jus tnever thought about it
lol
actually i suspect so does my laptop
(which is a 'corp' stripped down x220)
@MarkHenderson It's not just small businesses - I've had it happen in larger companies and it can devastate a project
as an employee I would only do it if my dream job opened up somewhere - and even then I'd feel skeevy about it. I don't think it's kosher personally.
(and I'm especially appalled at that answer about "go out and do an interview every 6-12 months just to stay in practice" -- I would cut a bitch if someone did that to me. My interviews are 2-3 hours of making sure you are the right candidate, and if I waste that time on someone only to have them say "Yeah, I was just practicing my interview skills" blood would have to be shed)
05:24
@voretaq7: eh, as long as i was happy with what i did, and the paychecks were fair and regular, i'd be pretty loyal to a hypothetical employer
@mgorven Check out this brutal edit: serverfault.com/posts/383665/revisions
That guy chose a weird example IP addressing scheme. Also, I add subtle emphasis on words and embolden other things to make it easier on the eyes. The whole post has to have a certain visual flow.
@WesleyDavid Was just looking at that
Don't be shy about slashing a post to ribbons and reconstructing it.
@WesleyDavid How does one get to the edit diff page?
In reality, it helps the OP get a better answer.
05:25
hit the "edited x hours ago" link
Click the "Edited 15 minutes ago" link
@JourneymanGeek I'm extremely loyal to my employers, but that's because I pick good ones.
@JourneymanGeek Beat me to it.
Ah, right.
@voretaq7 He should set up a murder board with some HR friends to put him through a test. Take them to lunch at a nice place. Not "Ho hum, time to go troll some interviews lol"
05:26
@voretaq7: I'm old fashioned
Actually, in that edit, I missed a few really picky things. I almost always spell out numbers under and including "ten." So when he said "I have 2 servers..." I should have changed it to "I have two servers..."
@JourneymanGeek as am I -- I like to think that each company I work for will be the one I stay at until retirement.
Numbers in sentences should only be arabic if they're large or they have a specific technical reason to be listed as an arabic numeral.
@WesleyDavid I'd answer that question if I knew how to DNAT in Windows.
(Can Windows do DNAT? duck)
and I treat them all like that's exactly what's going to happen (though a part of that is my own hatred for half-assed solutions)
05:28
@mgorven Dunno, never had to try it.
@WesleyDavid Numbers under 100 should be typed out as words
@WesleyDavid +1
though I make liberal allowances for technical conversation (15TB, 4GB of swap...)
@voretaq7 As opposed to 15TiB, 4GiB I hope ;-)
@mgorven anyone who uses the little "i" needs to be beaten about the head.
05:31
@mgorven You don't really see the 'proper' units getting thrown around here.
Same for people who use "Kibi" to mean *1024 -- It sounds too much like "Kibbles 'n Bits"
@voretaq7 I learned numbers under and including ten, but... not sure what stylebook that my curriculum was based on.
there were quite a few questions related to that on SU
@ShaneMadden unless we're talking b versus B!
05:32
I just call the HDD style gigs as metric gigabytes, and use gb for proper ones
hmm
before i get people to kick this over...

Q: A single LDAP auth server for two companies

saabeilinOnce upon a time there was a small company (mycompany.com) with 10 software developers and a laboratory (thelab.org) with 5 scientists. But the total number of people is 12, as 3 of them work both for the lab and the company. In some sense, the lab is a subsidiary of the company. Though there a...

this belngs on SF dosen't it?
@WesleyDavid <100 was MLA way the hell back in the late 80s/early 90s when I first started getting essay assignments in grade school. I think <=10 is the standard these days
@voretaq7 Well, yeah, obviously that!
@voretaq7 It was fifty // 51 for me. So yeah.
Though I guess @WesleyDavid is older than me. Wacky education system, that.
@JourneymanGeek yes, but only if they clean up the fairy-tale beginning first.
@JourneymanGeek I WILL kick that back if it comes here with "once upon a time" as the first sentence.
and I will mercilessly mock it in the Teacher's Lounge for all to see :)
05:35
lol. I could do that, but i'd benefit more if it gets kicked over then edited ;p
could you just mock it, then let someone rip it to shreds? ;p
@JourneymanGeek NEIN!
but if you edit it here before I see it no harm done
I'm a big believer in fixing formatting/language/etc. before migrating to another site -- part of Don't Migrate Crap.
fixed
Oh, NOW you say that ;p
don't worry, if you put a good answer on it you'll get plenty of make-up rep :)
@JourneymanGeek I need to step up and rep up. I want more powers on SU.
lol
One question a day!
05:39
@voretaq7 Is that like make-up sex?
@JourneymanGeek that's how it starts.
I mean, i got over 200 rep off being sarcastic
and then one day you need 2 questions.... then 4... then 8....
and then one day you wake up and the Towers of Hanoi program you started yesterday is STILL RUNNING!
@voretaq7: Pretty much if you can answer that many, you'd have the skillset to get over the initial hump
@JourneymanGeek pfft, if I could count the number of days I rep-capped off sarcasm...
05:40
lol
...it would be 18 according to /reputation :-)

rep cap was reached via rep from upvotes *only* on 18 days
lol
note the point where rep... sort of skyrockets on SU
;p
Thats shortly after i went on the "I need to try to answer at LEAST a question a day" thing
you can tell when work gets busy :P
05:42
lol
yours is more consistant!
@JourneymanGeek dude, I can see the global rep recalc on yours
the big drop?
500 point bounty
@JourneymanGeek aww, that's less fun :(
yeah I guess Feb. 1 is too soon for the global recalc
05:44
The guy who got the rep earned it

Q: Getting macro keys from a Razer BlackWidow to work on Linux

Journeyman GeekI picked up a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate that has additional keys meant for macros that are set using a tool that's installed on Windows. I'm assuming that these aren't some fancypants joojoo keys and should emit scancodes like any other keys. Firstly, is there a standard way to check these scanc...

@JourneymanGeek Be prepared, I just kicked a question over to you in the comments here:
3
A: Wifi is slower than Ethernet cable connection?

WesleyDavidChange your band from b+g+n to strict N. Otherwise it will be in protective mode and you'll never see the full N / MIMO speed. This requires your clients to be N and support MIMO, but you knew that.

basically reverse engineered the keyboard
and wrote a solution that works on other keyboards by the same company
so ya, 500 rep was cheap ;p
I hate it when comments go like this:

User: Clarify?
Me: Clarified!
User: Make me a sammich?
Me: ಠ_ಠ
lol
sudo make me a sammich?
@JourneymanGeek not in sudoers file
this has been reported
05:47
@WesleyDavid To nobody. Because sudo sucks at that.
lol
its logged
@JourneymanGeek not always. By default it used to send an email
Yay, 20 rep for some basic arithmetic \o/
@mgorven It's always the drop dead simple ones that nail the most rep.
Mostly because it appeals to the broadest audience.
Yeah.
05:55
I still can't believe this is my highest non-community wiki answer: http://serverfault.com/questions/299031/how-does-a-computer-obtain-an-ip-address-via-dhcp/299032#299032
I remember thinking "This is *informative?* I thought everyone knew this."
GARGLE-FLARGLE-FRAGGLE-ROCKING-MARKDOWN
Markdown breaks on multi-line messages.
not-broken
@WesleyDavid sigh
This:
*is-broken*
Dammit -- more rep lost to SuperUser. shakes fist
New Rule: Only migrate Q/As that I haven't earned more than 10 points on.
@voretaq7 I remember it well.
@WesleyDavid I thought you wanted to level-up over there :)
and you commented that it was a job for superuser! Stupid contradictory kitten...
Is SuperUser worth diving into? From my brief attempts there seems to be a higher crap ratio than SF.
05:59
@WesleyDavid serverfault.com/questions/306837/… that's my #2 answer by votes
@voretaq7 On my own terms. =)
Snark: The key to high rep on Server Fault
@mgorven IMHO, no.
@voretaq7 I'm a cat. I'm not obligated to make sense.
I try to get people here to not migrate our shit questions to SU, but that's honestly b/c they have enough shit on their own...
I think it's worth it for a couple of reasons:
1) I like to see how users think
2) I like to inject some cluefulness into the place. I hope I'm not stroking myself in thinking that I'm more clueful than the average luser, but let's move on...
3) I like to have a high rep over there to gain some of the privileges.
4) Higher rep can at time help end pissing contests in comments over there.
@voretaq7 Plus one. I hate migrating at all. If people didn't ask it on the right site, no problem. But point them in that direction and let them put one of their own feet in front of one of their other feet. Mollycoddling isn't terribly helpful.
Yes, I just said "a couple of reasons" and then gave four. We're back to "I'm a cat. Therefore cat."
06:03
@WesleyDavid Users actually think?...
@mgorven I dunno, every time I look at SU, I just feel a pit of despair and I get flashbacks to my time in a computer repair shop
I like to think I'm above fixing the IRQ/DMA settings on a Sound Blaster 16
@MarkHenderson LOL
@WesleyDavid - noooo the star wall no longer looks like a perverted (aka normal) conversation between you and I
1) They don't.
2) That's like injecting a single atom of poison into a fat-ass american - it dilutes in a hurry.
3) OK.
4) Do you really want to risk them splashing on you?
@voretaq7 #4 is true. I once had a pissing contest with a highish rep user on there. I simply pointed them to my SF rep and diamond and he shut the fuck up
06:06
@MarkHenderson IRQ11 - Because nobody will ever print at the same time they play sounds.
@voretaq7 I'm fairly sure mine was on 5 or 7, and I would often disable COM2 to get IRQ3 back
DMA was always 220
@MarkHenderson IRQ 19. Because . . . . . . . . . . .sorry, your song is keeping me from accessing the hard drive to load the rest of your song.
@voretaq7 Song!? Song?! I once tried to play an MP3 on my 486. I..t...s..o..u..n..d..e..d..l..i..k..e..t..h..i..s..
@MarkHenderson Did they cry?
And as for CDs, well that had analogue passthrough (if you remembered to plug in the analogue cable)
06:09
@MarkHenderson actually I think 7 is the IRQ for LPT1
I know my NE2000 Compatibles were IRQ 9
11 is the one I used to move the card to because I used my printer :)
I think we had an LPT dot matrix
@MarkHenderson ... if you didn't lose the analog cable!
@MarkHenderson I had an Epson with a postscript font cartridge!
Colour one too. It could print four colours, and the ribbon had to re-align for each colour, and you could print black or colour, but not both. If you had the colour ribbon in, black would simply be all four colours ontop of eachother, which was more like grey
06:11
True Story: That printer got relegated to my parents' basement to do scut work like printing tax returns. One year the kitchen drain pipe blew out and dumped about 2 gallons of tukey soup broth into the printer. We hosed it out, dried it in the sun for a couple of days, and it worked fine when we plugged it back in.
@voretaq7 Wow you fancy motherfucker
@MarkHenderson JEALOUS - My Epson only did B&W
And the award for "Most use of acronyms in a crappy question" goes to...

Q: F/LOSS OSS for ASP/ISP?

TomI am looking for the OSS side for our BSS/OSS. I kind of like OpenNMS, but we need provisioning for web services too. What F/LOSS OSS solutions for an ASP/ISP?

I remember the day we sold our old dot matrix, We got 50 bucks for it. And the very hour before we sent it off to its new home, we finally discovered how to print in landscape (you had to set the setting on the printer AND in word)
@WesleyDavid wtf ru trng 2 ask?
06:13
@WesleyDavid He wants a what for his what...
@voretaq7 I wrote soemthing smartarse on there, but alas, being a diamond I deleted it
@mgorven See the kind of formatting issues that we have to deal with?! http://serverfault.com/posts/383678/revisions
Makes me wonder if people even bother to look at their question and think "Gee, is this even readable? Will anyone have a chance at answering my question if it looks like a technical writer puked alphabet soup on the screen?"
@MarkHenderson do you want to shoot that alphabet soup or should I?
(and if you thought your comment was smartass you might want to delete mine ;)
I like how the editor keeps strings in a row. "What" [200 characters] "could" [450 characters] "be the" [340 characters] "problem, and how" [1300 characters] "could I" [600 characters] "troubleshoot it" [750 characters] "?"
@WesleyDavid Yeah, I know :-/
06:18
@voretaq7 Datacenter guys. Who even knows what they do.
@WesleyDavid FUCKING DC OPS - HOW DO THEY WORK?
OK, bedtime as I'm just bullshitting and have no more core DB shit to work on.
I leave you all with this delightful spam subject line I just received:

Subject: Using decks to fund your deals with pooled capital
Discuss amongst yourselves. I'm sure you can't come up with anything less coherent than the actual spam.
@WesleyDavid They take my money and generate massive amounts of heat. That's about it as far as I can tell
Oh wow oh wow

Q: service software

phone serviceVirtual receptionist that read scripts you provide Answer United works with clients that range from independent, freelance home offices and small businesses to Fortune 500 companies with large call volumes

@WesleyDavid Spam? What spam? I don't see any spam.
It doesn't show me who deleted it anymore on mod deletions. That's odd.
06:25
Why is DNS so hard to understand?
@mgorven ... it's not?
There are a lot of misconceptions about it though
@mgorven I'd wager it's that pesky "N".
Because the way it actually works is different to the way its perceived as working
I'm a jerk.
@MarkHenderson I suppose that if all you've done is configure a client with some caching DNS servers you're not going to realise what's going on behind that.
06:28
Awww, TLD dude deleted his question.
@WesleyDavid Yeah, I missed upvoting your answer (and preventing his delete) by 12 seconds.
@WesleyDavid Do you have a link still?
you 'mericans are up late
Let's vote to undelete :-}
Pweeeeze

06:30
you bastard

@ShaneMadden Can questions with upvoted answers not be deleted?
@mgorven not by the asker
Or not unilaterally by the asker, at any rate.
@ShaneMadden can they vote to delete if they have the rep? IDK that anyone has tried that...
SUH-weet! Question undeleted. Not sure why I'm so gleeful about that. Probably because I'm a jerk.
06:35
Are you just gunna make fun of the guy?
I'm going to delete it again if you are
@MarkHenderson sigh Okay, okay... I'll put some flesh on them bones.
Hmm, yeah.. delete's no longer shown in the question event log for us lowly 10ks.
I actually think it's an OK question, even if the guy has no knowledge of DNS
+1-1, it's a net win for the guy to leave it there
06:36
I am literally... literally going between O_O and -.- and O_o over the first comment on this one: serverfault.com/a/383691/9770
@MarkHenderson I think google might mock him for asking.
Well, it's a good opportinuty to point out that it's not because of technical limits - which is why ICANN is cashing out on gTLDs.
@ShaneMadden once again i'm in the wrong fucking part of this industry.
@voretaq7 We should start a certificate authority.
"Why yes, sir, we charge $20 per prime number. Wildcard certificate? Well.. those are some really good prime numbers we put in there."
@MarkHenderson (Yes, I'm clacking away on a deeper answer right now.
06:39
@ShaneMadden Honest Achmed's used SSL Certificates?
@voretaq7 Sounds good to me.
"This fine specimen was only ever used to sign a challenge hash every Sunday - the x509 attributes still have that factory-fresh smell!"
"Oh, you mean you want us to actually verify your identity? That'll be an extra $300 thanks."
@mgorven for $1000 I'll say you're someone else.
@voretaq7 Unless I'm the government, then you'll do it for free...
@WesleyDavid I'm expecting some badass hierarchy metaphor for explaining DNS. Either royalty or military. Or maybe the food chain.
06:46
@mgorven no, it costs $2000 for them
@ShaneMadden The root zone ate my babies!
@voretaq7 What did you expect? It's a natural predator.
@ShaneMadden Yeah, you'll be disappointed. =)
@MarkHenderson Ta da!

A: Why do domain-names have to end with .(something)

WesleyDavidBecause that's the way it is. Oh, and this is also the way it is. And this. There comes a point when, if you ask "why" enough times, you will be met with, not technical facts, but history and the one word answer: "because." The history involved is longer and more detailed than an answer her...

@voretaq7 Go to bed.
@WesleyDavid I'd just edit your answer to include that... but I think I'll just go to sleep instead.
aren't you guys staying up rather late?
@WesleyDavid OK :)
06:52
@Chopper3 12:52 AM here. And I'm travelling tomorrow, so I don't need to be up at a normal hour.
I think I've got the touch of death tonight. Everything I answer gets deleted by the author.
@Chopper3 @voretaq7, on the other hand, is pressing 3:00 AM.
11:54PM for me. I should be in bed. I'm a bad kitty.
@WesleyDavid haha - I sometimes hit patches of that
@ShaneMadden I got a good 7hrs sleep but we're having something delivered for my daughter so I wanted to be up early in case it gets here early
@Chopper3 A Bugatti?
@Chopper3 She's cute. I like the red thing she's on too.
@LucasKauffman How's the near east this morning?
@WesleyDavid in this kind of cow-print, for her bedroom obviously, she has a small sofa/couch in there but it's a bit small and old so we're getting that delivered instead but it's one of those 'any time of day' delivery things
@WesleyDavid not too bad, sunny
@Chopper3 "Your LEC engineer will arrive sometime between 7AM and 5PM. This month."
Who am I kidding. LECs don't have engineers. Just electricians in varying states of professional disgrace.

@WesleyDavid :)
Well lovely people, I'll be off to bed.

anyone here who use Lync and know that they have federation enabled?
I need to test it with someone
10:03
just for everyones knowledge 3 phase distro boxes are horribly heavy :\
everything 3phase is horribly heavy
probably a safe assumption
the extension cables are horrible :\
cold
10:47
@pauska I think we have federation
but i know it's limited
but, i'm willing to give it a try
if it's limited then you'll probably only have pre-approved domains
@pauska try me :)
@BartDeVos address?
Turns out, i'm an admin :)
you need to give them to me again, didnt get the time to add them as I was checking DNS
but I need the SIP address, you don't know which one it is?
you'll see it in lync settings
10:57
that should do it :)
Got it?
11:17
@BartDeVos sorry man, a coworker on babyleave just came in here with her baby and everything, screaming etc
can you give it again, and prefix (@) me with it?
sure :)
thanks
:4381412 SIP-account =/= email here
don't know why
I've added you now
11:21
Nothing pops up :(
and you have a SRV record for that subdomain aswell, so it should work - if your lync setup allows automatic federation
give me yours, i'll try it the other way around
got it?
got it
:4381428 HAHAHA best joke ever posted on SF chat

Ugh, not working
stupid germans blocked it on the Firewall
sorry
@BartDeVos Did they put their towels down on it early?
