Excitement! Some chick just hit a deer (and probably totaled her car) in front of my place. She was freaking out (but unhurt) some other dude had stopped to check on her. By the time I went out to see what was going on, another guy stopped and was checking on the deer. He starts sawing a its throat with his carry blade, and I had to ask "Do you need a bigger knife?". He got it done though.
Now I've got a pool of motor oil, and deer blood in the street in front of my driveway. Going to have to take the bike out easy tomorrow morning.
@84104 he's a decent chap really. Fellow inmate as it were. His staff are a bunch of freaks tho
@jscott Nice. Buck or doe?
Doe, but a big'un. The cut-man even took the carcass. Guess he's eating fresh venison steak for dinner. Got my dog freaking out properly though.
00:20
@jscott: waste not, want not i guess ;p
@jscott Did anyone hit on her?
@MarkHenderson Ha! She wasn't hot. And the tears+ runny mascara weren't doing her any favors. :)
Ah but she sounded vulernerable. Sounds like a good setup for one of those weird pornos
Did anyone leave behind anal beads?
3
@ScottPack No. Just the packaging.
If they did leave behind anal beads, I probably would have stolen someone elses car space
00:29
@ScottPack I have searched the accident scene thoroughly, but I suspect the officer who arrived may have taken them for himself.
@jscott So a cop was there too? Are you sure no one hit on her?
@ScottPack He did give her a "ride" to "wherever" she was "headed", so who knows? Tow truck guy would make it a total of four dudes (not counting me) to "help" her.
Sounds like quite the party. A cop, a vulerable (but not hot) chick, a dead deer, a guy chopping the dead deers head off, and the weirdo that lives there.
2
Who brought the beer?
00:31
And now a tow truck driver in the mix.
You forgot the dog! The dog was going nuts!
And a dog
@ScottPack Conveniently, I have a cooler with four kegs of said beer in it....
@jscott Need directions?
btw, where the fuck do you live? I'm guessing it's not in, you know, Manhatten.
00:34
Heh. I'm guessing you're about 6 hour drive from ye olde Big City, @jscott?
@MarkHenderson NY is a decent sized state, much of it isn't NYC. :) Here actually., house is obscured mostly by trees.
@ScottPack At least, traffic sucks, bus is worse...
@jscott My ignorance of America is vast and wide :)
@MarkHenderson Don't fret, most USians are far more ignorant about it than you.
I can however read a map and I see that it's close to Canada. Do you just pop over the border to get some free healthcare?
@MarkHenderson I'm about 2km from Lake Ontario, but after that, it's a heck of a swim...
00:39
@jscott But I hear that from the big spinning tower on the other side you can see the industrial pollutants billowing forth.
Or, maybe used to be able to. I'm not sure how much billowing Kodak is doing these days.
Google tells me you're < 2hr drive from the border
@ScottPack They're in chapter 11, so yeah... :)
@MarkHenderson Oh Christ, if you want to go through Niagara, NY, which is an absolute shithole. I'll suffer the incredibly over priced health care, thank you very much.
@jscott Haha okay... but you don't actually have to stop there, do you?
@MarkHenderson At the border, yes, "Papers please citizen..."
Sometimes on TV here they show "The Doctors", and there was an episode the other day about how to see a doctor for free, and there were all these things you could do if you had this and if you lived there and if you signed this and if you earned less than so much

Q: postfix fatal: missing = after attribute name

AlexI have been working on this for a while and cannot figure out whats wrong /etc/postfix/main.cf, line 96: missing '=' after attribute name: "sudo cp /etc/aliases /etc/postfix/aliases " my main.cf file sudo cp /etc/aliases /etc/postfix/aliases # may want to view the file to check if ok. # espec...

To be fair, Toronto, which I have visited many, many times is probably one of the nicer "big" cities I've been.
It just seemed so pathetic. When I want to see a doctor, I drive about 5 minutes up the road and see a doctor
Yeah, it's a bit of a unreal situation, I'll agree. I didn't have any coverage when I left college. Then I bounced through jobs which offered either awesome or zero coverage. Now, covered, but who knows how that will go.
@ScottPack Just have him pipe "your" config from wget to bash... problem solved.
01:13
Disregard that last flag, I was in error.
What's the official word on rpmforge for production boxes?
@jscott Boo, there's no pending flag that I can see and dispute.
@ShaneMadden I'm bouncing betwixt the web and mobile interface. I raised an invalid flag on an answer, commented, then couldn't remove my comment.. No big, but thanks.
For which ever reason, I've spent some time in /review today and wow, you mods must have a lot to deal with...
Really, stack overflow?

Q: Apache server error

lalitbansI m getting following apache server error in one of my file Handler for proxy-server returned invalid result code 70007 Please suggest what i have to do, to sort out the problem.

01:29
@WesleyDavid In fairness, the SO's "Doon" indicated how OP can improve question. Still throwing NARQ at it though..
I mean this was posted here and is nearly worse. :)

Q: how to transfer files and folders from windows (host) to linux (virtual machine)

OkeyPlease I wish to transfer files and folders from Windows (host) to Linux (virtual machine) using WinSCP. Any ideas?

ugh
winsp is horrible
@JourneymanGeek Is there a better scp option for Windows than WinSCP? Besides cygwin, of course.
i rather like cyberduck
and i do believe there's a cli scp client that comes with putty called pscp, it comes with gow github.com/bmatzelle/gow
Cool, thanks, already use puTTY, but haven't checked out those others.'
(gow is a bunch of windows native *nix tools, like unxutils. Much slicker and better packaged tho)
01:42
What is your problem with WinSCP? Doesn't cyberduck require an install?
The beauty of winscp is that it is a single exe you can download and is completely self-contained.
@JourneymanGeek Ive never heard of it before, but looking at the download history, looks like it's only become popular in the last 5 months or so
@Zoredache: UI and such
@MarkHenderson: cyberduck or gow?
@JourneymanGeek Gow
I like it
I like it better than cygwin
:o tail!
01:48
@MarkHenderson: Its awesome ;p
@WesleyDavid - you were after a version of tail for Windows
its one reason i don't have to maintain a proper full time linux box ;p
@WesleyDavid was chasing tail? ;p
@JourneymanGeek He's a man, we're always chasing tail :)
@Zoredache - mixing up the chat window with your shell again are we?
I can't wait until the day somebody comes up with a method to combine eyetracking tech and focus following.
Well, I know that they have eye tracking
I saw a thingo once where they did eye tracking on men. They had them sit in a boring conference, and then a sexy secretary would take a folder to the presenter
01:53
@Zoredache focus-follows-eyes
Yeah, and X11 has offered focus-follows-the-mouse for a couple decades.
And it didn't matter if the secretary was hot, ugly, small breasts, large breasts, nomatter what, the eyes went BAM! TITTIES! then scanned the rest.
@MarkHenderson You don't say...
Pft yeah it must have been a study by women. All men would have known this nomatter what.
I wonder what my eyes are doing whilst recreating that it my head.
01:56
@MarkHenderson And the Ig Nobel Prize goes too, the researcher that find guys will stare at females.
Don't need no fancy study to find out that, wow, men like tits!
Who would have thought
02:28
May have written a novel on Apache MPMs.
0
A: How do I select which Apache MPM to use?

Shane MaddenThere are a number of MPM modules, but by far the most widely used (at least on *nix platforms) are the three main ones: prefork, worker, and event. Essentially, they represent the evolution of the Apache web server, and the different ways that the server has been built to handle HTTP requests w...

02:58
@ShaneMadden How the hell do you know all thqat?
03:12
VICTORY IS MINE!
(well, shared with the folks from DBA, but the query planner is VANQUISHED and that's what's really important here. :-)
@ShaneMadden Congratulations, you just got yourself a place on The Wall
03:30
@MarkHenderson Yes, but there's wintail in the Server Admin tools package, or whatever it's called. Found something better?
@ShaneMadden Now there's a man who knows his Apache.
@MarkHenderson even gay men are inexplicably mesmerized by tits.
@voretaq7 I'm sure it's a freudian thing
Did someone say teets?
My Mum said even has an infant I loved tits, she had to stop breast feeding me because I was just obsessed by them.
03:33
Freud says everyone has issues with his mother.
(and quite frankly he's right: The woman was a fucking bitch!)
My mom and I... shudder
@jscott focus follows OOH SHINY!
Can we go back to dog balls? I don't think that room meme got its due amount of air time.
1
Q: Easy to use mail server

yakatzWe are looking for a relatively simple mail server. @WesleyDavid: front ent?
03:44
@JourneymanGeek dude, he's a cat with a keyboard. That's pretty good compared to what USUALLY happens!
@JourneymanGeek Edit me. I'm too lazy.
@WesleyDavid dog balls was a meme in our office for about a year
I'm over dog balls
I'm not over dog balls.
So there.
@MarkHenderson so's the dog...
@WesleyDavid Not starring it. Too easy.
03:44
Is it weird being a cat and being into dog balls?
4
its a minor edit >_>
@WesleyDavid dude - nothing good comes from interspecies sex.
@WesleyDavid Not if you bite them
@MarkHenderson I had a cat who would intentionally bite the other unfixed males balls in the house. He was fixed and we hadn't gotten the other two males fixed. He was the older alpha. Would turn around like a viper and latch onto their pontoons.
o0
shudders
03:46
@WesleyDavid he wants them back, and he doesn't much care how.
@JourneymanGeek G'head. Get some edit juice.
@WesleyDavid: can't. minimum 6 charecters for an edit ;p
@JourneymanGeek Well, "dog balls" is nine characters, so do the math. =)
Certainly there's a correlation between dog balls and postfix.
@JourneymanGeek <!--- stupid typo-making cat! --->
oh, thats the comment
done
03:53
@JourneymanGeek you don't have edit privs yet? Go answer some questions you lazy sod! :)
@voretaq7: Oh, i've been working on it
sadly, I'm entirely aware of my lack of knowledge here, and i do try for decent answers ;p
Bald faced hornets are my new main site meme.
^Seriously, they will fuck your shit up.
bah.
Star-nosed moles are better.
Okay people, dog balls should not be so close to Steve's new baby.
is very much a very small network admin
03:55
@WesleyDavid Hey! No takebacks!
Chat just ate my sentence.
There, I made it spit it back up.
Bad chat, go to your room.
@voretaq7 I saw a failed suicide attempt that looked like that.
Eww.
eh
@WesleyDavid: gunshot?
It's almost as ridiculous a creature as the Pllllllllllllllatypus.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, poor guy. =(
You just want to hug people like that.
someone jumped off my building, through a honeycomb steel sheet, punching a nice large, non manshaped hole, and went splat
03:58
@WesleyDavid The Star-Nosed Mole: Nature's little reminder not to try to hold in a sneeze.
@JourneymanGeek =/ How long ago was that?
I'm like "oh crap, someone just went splat" and the janitor in chief was like "Oh crap, someone made a hole in the walkway roof!"
less than a year
Dog balls, anal beads and boobs. Where's @Iain and when is he coming back? =(
@JourneymanGeek ... what?
its not common, maybe 3-4 jumpers in my neighbourhood in 20 years
03:59
That's terrible
Ya, it was
and the guy wasn't joking
and once the police picked up (scraped off?) the body, they had to hose the blood off the sidewalk
fricking creepy. looked like something out of a horror movie, other than that it was sunny
BTW, for a little perspective, here's the mole-badger-wombat-wolverine-raccoon in relief:
^ Much cuter.
its a mole
@JourneymanGeek I hyphenated it.
04:01
@JourneymanGeek it does look like a badger though with those claws...
Hi @mgorven - you have a bad habit of descending into the room when the conversation is at its most ribald. We try not to let it get this way, but the more virtuous members of chat seem to be missing in action. =)
Made a CentOS 6 bootable USB thumbdrive today. That was more difficult than I had expected.
However, it's part of the "CentOS the Mac Mini NMS!!" project
Dagnabbit I wish I had been clued into the HP mini server.
@WesleyDavid Yeah, if Chopper3 were here he'd totally raise the bar
@WesleyDavid: thought it was the darling of the home server set ;p
04:06
Feel like a total noob. HP didn't do a good job of marketing it though. I'm an "HP guy" in a way - I like their servers, have been using them for years, and like to browse their site at random for servers -- and I still didn't see that thing.
It would have been perfect.
Oh well.
Anyone who complains about Microsoft playing fast and loose with standards, needs to take a walk through apple's interpretation of UEFI.
lol
@WesleyDavid: the one where the OS checks for a FAN controller before it boots?
hmm
@JourneymanGeek It doesn't use the EFI boot partition, but instead has baked-in support for HFS+ filesystem and then boots straight to the Apple partition. That's what rEFIt is for, an EFI boot manager.
If i wasn't saving to build a gaming rig, it seems tempting to replace my atom with something more modern >_>
ahh
Also, it's ancient. UEFI 2.0 is out and I think it's still a highly customized 1.1
@JourneymanGeek I have my mom's dog answering to "Honey Badger" now...
04:18
Anyone remember the command-line program for checking on the replication status of a dfs-r?
@MarkHenderson ipconfig /flushdns -- or, at least, that's what the .NET developers I know use as their first line of troubleshooting for anything that's not a runtime error.

A: How should I respond to interview requests when recently hired?

Faddel HomsiI read an advice from an article, that is recommended to have an interview every six months or year even if you are enrolled, that would help to understand what new things managers care about, or what skills are more important currently,

sigh
@WesleyDavid I've noticed that the conversation topics are rather, um, diverse ;-)
@mgorven Yessir, indeed. We don't intend any harm, but... well... it spirals into a Tourette's Support Group rather quickly.
@mgorven Very nice job you've been doing on your answers. I notice your name high on the list of contributors lately.
@WesleyDavid No harm in that :)
@WesleyDavid Thanks. I'm running out of old unanswered questions to tackle though ;-)
04:28
@voretaq7 How the hell did my answer to that one resume question get to be so highly voted? And accepted even? Don't they know I'm a cat? Who trusts a cat for resume advice?!
@mgorven Oh, so that's what you've been doing. Nice. What tags have you been mining?
@mgorven oh I'm sure there are plenty more unloved questions where those came from.
@WesleyDavid Linux server applications and networking mostly
@WesleyDavid I stay away from Windows ;-)
@mgorven While you're crawling through there feel free to flag any really awful (or duplicate) stuff you find
@mgorven Oh yeah, there's tons of unloved questions in that vein. ServerFault is a virtual island of misfit questions
@voretaq7 Yes!!
there's probably at least a Deputy badge in there
04:31
@voretaq7 I've been wondering about the questions which maybe were valid when they were posted ages ago, but are unlikely to ever be answered or useful. Should those be flagged?
@mgorven hmm, give me a few examples
@mgorven Also, when you get enough rep, feel free to edit posts for quality. There's an archaeologist badge for that
From a quick scan
http://serverfault.com/questions/365573/error-db2javit-rc-9505-upon-opening-a-db2-gui-tool
@mgorven More than likely, yes. If a question isn't timeless, or nearly so, then it's probably not a good fit.
plus the rep you get for approved edits (+2 I think?)
04:33
Ah yes, @mgorven, you can edit even if you have too little rep to approve your own edits, but that just means someone with a little more rep will have to manually approve it. That's fine - and you get a little bump of rep too.
@WesleyDavid Ye, I've been submitting some minor edits to questions to make them readable
Although the 6 non-whitespace characters requirement is a bitch sometimes.
yeah stuff like that if you think you can drag enough info out of the OP to get it answered post a comment, otherwise flag it and we'll look at it.THere's probably a question in that one somewhere that could be answered, but they don't tell us enough to solve the problem and it seems abandoned
@mgorven See, take lessons from me. I'm brutal with my edits. I have no concern for original author style. If I edit, I edit it to the bone and only leave the marrow behind. =)
So far I haven't had a single poster complain.
Of course, there's a stack of bodies behind the warehouse, but never you mind about that.
@mgorven don't be afraid to edit heavily
@WesleyDavid Haha. I'm not used to this concept of drastically changing what people said.
04:36
@mgorven Stick with me, I'll sway your thinking yet. =)
goes off to look for an example
right now your edits have to be approved so one of the regulars will look at them and decide if they're OK. And if they need tweaking we can do that before we approve them
just try not to radically change meaning and you'll be fine :)
Fair warning: I reject edit suggestions if there's even just a few little punctuation or grammar mistakes left behind. FYI, I follow the Chicago stylebook, and like the Oxford comma. =D
@WesleyDavid everyone, future keeper of the comma-shaker.
04:37
Also, when you're in chat, if you mention stars you get stars. Also, cursing markdown is rewarded.
@WesleyDavid I can live with that
@mgorven ^^ See?
BTW, to make tags pop in posts or chat, do the following [tag:tag-text]
No spaces!
[tag:I borked markdown!]
^ Doesn't work.
04:39
@WesleyDavid or unicode. and I think umlauts break it too.
@voretaq7 I'm not following the star mentioning?
[tag:zoë-keating-would-be-sad]
@voretaq7 What doesn't break markdown?
@mgorven Hover your cursor over a chat.
See the little tiny icons that appear?
@WesleyDavid that's broken as designed though: Tags can't have spaces.
To the right?
04:39
@WesleyDavid Yup, I know how to star a message
Ohhhh, derp.
@mgorven See, you mentioned a five pointed thingy.
@mgorven It's best not to question the star wall. Otherwise you'll wind up like this:
@voretaq7 Don't you dare.
@voretaq7 Don't you dare!!
Jan 26 '11 at 17:41, by pauska
Today, I came home to find a sock I previously used to whack off on my bed with googly eyes and a mouth drawn on it with a note that read "Because you can't find a real girl, I made your current one prettier, Love Mom." FML
@WesleyDavid Of course I dare.
@voretaq7 Okay, that's better. I was worried that you'd dig up something... incriminating against me.
04:42
and that was only a 5-star quote.
@voretaq7 I thought he hit double digits when it got pinned?
@WesleyDavid probably one of the other incarnations?
@WesleyDavid Ooooh, you mean if I say the word "star" someone else will star my message?
Yeah, that sock's been passed around like a joint at a grateful dead concert.
@mgorven Yarp.
@WesleyDavid Gotit.
04:45
poor @pauska - he has all the good star quotes
@mgorven It's one of the twisted unwritten rules of the room. That and "Never go to any IP address Chopper3 posts"
I will avoid pentapolygons.
@mgorven Ohhh, see... that's close. Depending on the level of tension in the room, that could get... err...fivepointed.
@WesleyDavid Noted. Interestingly we have the same rule in IRC about someone called Alpha1.
There may be a pattern there.
Aug 18 '11 at 14:15, by pauska
I DO NOT LOOK LIKE A LESBIAN! TAKE THAT BACK!
@mgorven WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!? THE BOOK SAID PENTAGRAM!
04:47
/me closes the Pentagram WP page
Is there a /me equivalent here?
@mgorven Yes and no. There's a greasemonkey userscript that will do it
It broke after a while though, until @Reb fixed it.
Shoot, I at'd her. We're doomed.
Pfft, this newfangled web thing.
@WesleyDavid no, YOU'RE doomed.
(but that's normal)
@mgorven It'll never catch on.
04:50
@WesleyDavid Unlikely hey.
... waits for someone to click on that link
@voretaq7 I know i'm dragging up an old post here, but our company has just been royally fucked in the ass by someone who did that to us
We're only a small company, so when our head project manager left, he gave us 6 months notice. We spend 3 months searching for the right replacement, 1 month negotiating with him, 1 month waiting for him to finish his current role, and then 1 month with the two people working together
2 weeks after the project manager finally left, and this guy was on his own, he upped and quit with no notice or warning
Becuase he had another offer that he was chasing at the same time as us come good for him
So as a result, we now have a highly skilled position unfilled, we wasted over $30,000 and 3 months training the guy just to have him piss off
That's not the sort of hit that a small business can take easilly. Shit, throwing away $30k is basically akin to kicking the owner in the balls
@mgorven Okay, I found an example of a post that I just heavily edited.

A: SQL Server 2008 Workgroup Edition on virtual server with no swapping

MikeI have exactly the same virtual server from Host Europe as well as the same problem. I think I have found a solution. It seems to me that parallelism on the server results in this issue. The virtual server has 24 virtual CPUs and this is too much for 4 GB of RAM. I made the following changes in ...

Click the edit link to see the differences.
Good work
@MarkHenderson Wow, that's a dick move.
04:56
Poor guy, 24 cores and his maxdop is 2
@WesleyDavid Totally. He came from a big company where you can pull that sort of shit withotu anyone really caring, but when you come to a company of 6 people, and you're made clear during the job interview that you'll be carrying the companys projects on your shoulders (and compensated accordingly), you don't take the job if you think you might get a better offer later on
@WesleyDavid Hrm, okay.
What's the etiquette when questions are answered with a comment (a long time ago). Just copy/paste it into an answer?
@mgorven Steal it like a bandit!!
9
Q: How to handle unanswered questions that have the answer in a comment or edited into the question?

cweiskeThis is about those two questions: httpd.conf match absolute file PHP 5.3 Not Logging Both had no answer (neither accepted nor unaccepted). Both askers answered it without actually writing an answer, but by adding a comment explaining the answer editing the question to contain the answer ...

@WesleyDavid Right.
