@petergrace - how many female devs do you have?
looks like I need to install "mercurial" as well
@Aaron Worth it, you're just a 'hg pull', 'make' and 'bin/release/DwarfTherapist' away!
@MikeyB I just showed this to my colleague and he wanted to know who "Dwarf" was and who he was raping.
@Ladadadada Urist McRapist? Not one of the default dwarf names. :p
16:06
abort: couldn't generate documentation: docutils module is missing
please install python-docutils or see http://docutils.sourceforge.net/
I hate unix sometimes
@Aaron did you do the:
sudo apt-get install build-essential mercurial pbuilder debootstrap devscripts debhelper ubuntu-dev-tools
or equiv? :)
I don't have sudo
@Aaron sudo apt-get install sudo then.
2
I mean, sudo as root access
@Aaron What are you running? ubuntu 11.04 by any chance?
16:10
CentOS
@Aaron OK, have fun :)
srsly
@Aaron yeah, might take a bit to find all the equivalent CentOS packages.

Just wanted to stop by the server side of things in case any of the mac admins haven't gotten the news of certs expiring today on software updates...
bmike on March 23, 2012

Yesterday, many Mac system administrators learned on Twitter of an urgent change arriving to their servers leaving less than 24 hours until the expiration day for Apple’s certificate used to sign updates. This change affects a tool that gets little fanfare and is deeply buried as one of 20+ items that Profile Manager can do. Although a Software Update Server (SUS) can normally set up once and mostly forgotten, but doing so can save money, conserve bandwidth, reduce support tickets, and make a company’s Macs more stable. …

Someone just upvoted an answer of mine from Oct '09.
@KyleSmith Maybe it's still useful?
I'm sure it is.
@KyleSmith CTRL-Z! Hammer time!

@voretaq7 I wondered where you disappeared to.
@BartSilverstrim w0rk w0rk w0rk
@voretaq7 But...it's friday.
well, today actually roughly-equal parts w0rk and plane-shopping
16:42
Although I'm heading out after a round of updates on a couple servers are done.
@BartSilverstrim updateUPDATEupdateUPDATEupdateUPDATEupdateUPDATE SERVICE PACK! SERVICE PACK!...
doesn't quite have the BadgerBadgerBadger ring to it.
@voretaq7 woodworking or flying ?
@Iain flying. I have all the woodworking tools I need at the moment.
(Though actually I could use a new blade for my wood plane)
@voretaq7 you got your ppl then ?
@Iain imminent with the cooperation of the weather gods. We're doing checkride prep & I have to fill in some solo XC time
16:48
if I had the free time and money I'd look at some of the LSA
much less operating cost/hour
@Aaron the only LSA I can afford (that I'd want to fly) is a Cessna 150 - and I couldn't pack my fat-ass friends into one without going over gross :-/
I have a coworker (and friend) departing
the new LSAs are sweet aircraft though - 5-6 gal/hr at decent speeds & able to haul two actual people. Just Not $80-120K worth of sweet :-x
@BartSilverstrim Rebecca counts as a dev, so, 1.
at least in my opinion rebecca is a dev
she wears a few hats.
16:53
Yep, only her as a dev.
lots of ladies work for SE, but only Rebecca would be considered a dev.
What do they work as? Sales? Community managers?
sales, chaos and community.
had to fix the url :)
So do you know if you get interest from female "it" people or programmers?
...jeff atwood's still on the page. Aren't you going to remove him?...
He's still a cofounder even if he doesn't actively work at SE
he's still on the board, for instance
Ah, thought he left.
16:57
@PeterGrace Women sure do love their accessories
@BartSilverstrim he no longer directly makes day-to-day decisions.
That job is now filled by David Fullerton.
AKA, "Oh Captain My Captain"
Hey Pete, I finally remembered to email my editors asking if they knew anyone in or anything about the Blizzard ad buying machine.
@Basil sweet, any breakthroughs?
17:19
Hey @voretaq7, know offhand if FreeBSD's ext3 driver would be entirely it's own implementation?
I'm just laying the smackdown on someone on SU talking out their ass.
@PeterGrace Nope, just sent the email at lunch. I generally don't check my wow emails from work, so I'll tell you Monday (or over the weekend if I see you)
@MikeyB oh? link?
That's a negative. The following files contain at least some GPL code:
ext2_bitmap.c (in the cvs attic)
ext2_fs.h
ext2_fs_i.h
ext2_fs_sb.h
ext2_linux_balloc.c
ext2_linux_ialloc.c
ext2_super.c (in the cvs attic)
ext2_vfsops.c (has some GPL'ed code from ext2_super.c)
i386-bitops.h
FreeBSD's ext2/3/4 support is all called ext2 in the kernel AFAIK

A: Why Windows does not recognize files inside Linux installed partitions?

jimpIn addition to Windows simply not having support for Linux file systems, Microsoft cannot reasonably take on the responsibility of guaranteeing your data will be safe if they try to support them. For example (and completely hypothetical), say the ext4 team improves performance by recognizing a ne...

@Basil Thanks! You can just toss me an e-mail when you hear something. That's generally the quickest way to get ahold of me asides from gtalk which hits my cellphone.
17:30
In front of my office:
@Basil Took me a second, but hah! Awesome.
@MikeyB I have a bad-ish cell-camera and a little bit of a shaky grip.
@Basil nice eyelashes there, pretty boy.
:)
@Basil I'm a hair from 67. Do you know if you can queue for utgarde at 68 or do you have to wait till 70? I vaguely remmeber it being 70 back at the release of WOTLK
@PeterGrace That's not my car :P
@Basil LIKELY STORY.
17:36
@PeterGrace IIRC you need to actually be 70. It sucked, and I was so tired of vanilla I ground random mobs for an hour to get there
I briefly thought we were talking about age.
Was going to say you look great for 68.
@PeterGrace This is kinda what my car looks like: images.gtcarlot.com/gtgallery/photo.php?id=31326683
Mine is much dirtier
17:47
There is my new car.
2012 Kia Forte eco edition
It hauls ass, it's amazing. It's the best $20k I could have spent for a car I'm sure
"eco edition" = high MPG?
37 highway says the sticker
I get 30-31 realistically but I drive between 80-90mph
so it's naturally gonna eat more gas.
ah
I'm getting closer and closer to picking up a used IS250, myself.
@PeterGrace I realized this when I got my Accord
Horsepower is still just power, that energy has to come from somewhere
yep. I test drove the Kia Forte and the Kia Optima
the Optima is a very luxurious car, but it felt like I was towing something.
The Forte is extremely nimble, it sold me in the first 400 feet of the test drive.
I told the sales guy, I said "just close your eyes and pay no attention what I'm about to do to this vehicle" -- my wife was holding the jesus handle the whole time.
Luckily the sales guy knew me from our last car we bought (2012 Sorento) so he wasn't a jerk about it, but I got 'er right up to 90 on the local freeway and then took it in the back roads to see how it cornered and in every way I pushed it, the Forte was happy and wanted more.
17:53
@PeterGrace All of the software / systems people I know insist on a fast car. I can't find the root cause of this phenomenon, but it's pretty consistent
My criteria was 1) good gas mileage 2) nimble
nimble because with my commute oftentimes I have to drive around the idiots in PA who go the speed limit in the left lane
the "overtaking lane" for the brits/canadians I think :)
PA has a campaign to try to get people to keep right except to pass but nobody seems to listen
@PeterGrace My solution for this is to make it legal to paintball their car until they move
@PeterGrace :) Going more than 50kph over the limit here nets you a 10K fine and instant impoundment of your car. So in the left lane people are usually going between 130 and 149.9 when possible.
10k in what currency?
18:00
@MikeyB In California it's a slap on the wrist. They know that if they let you off with a fine, they can just keep fining you forever for speeding
I would advocate paying a flat $2000 every year to the state of California for the right to speed and park wherever I want.
@PeterGrace $10K CAD ≅ $10K USD
Wow.
That'd be a great way to get people to drive better in the US
@Joel It's the anti-street racing law. Which has led to some amusing results: canada.com/topics/news/national/… (Garbage truck nailed for street racing in Goderich)
that's only 30mph over the speed limit
There's a stretch on US 1 that is 40mph during my commute
Any bets on how fast I'm going through that corridor?
@PeterGrace ≥25 above the limit in MI is Wreakless Driving. It's a Felony charge. <25 over are various tickets starting at 1-4 (which caries no points, but has a fine). Street Racing requires a 2nd vehicle in MI.
18:10
In NY, 40+ over gets you 11 points, which is the lower threshold for revocation/suspension.
@Basil iLOL'd
@MikeyB $10K CAD = $10.2K USD. actually. The world is upside down :'(
@MikeyB Re: the FreeBSD EXT driver, I don't know but let me check something quick
@voretaq7 All the more reason we should merge our currencies
@MikeyB I'm kind of amazed he got a garbage truck to haul ass
@Joel That's only 70mph; not all that fast in the scheme of things.
@MikeyB Seems like it's gone from base in FreeBSD 8...
18:18
@voretaq7 What's gone?
@ChrisS The ext2/3/4 driver?
The kernel driver is still there, it's a module, not part of GENERIC.
The utilities are a port now, you have to install them separate.
@ChrisS The ext utilities
57 secs ago, by Chris S
The utilities are a port now, you have to install them separate.
I was looking for the port - I didn't see a mount_ext* under e2fsprogs, is it somewhere else?
18:22
I thought it was part of e2fsprogs....
@ChrisS I did too but I don't see it in the plist file.
Cool, the alma mater is hosting a presidential debate again.
I don't think my neckbeard is rugged enough for me to use a *BSD yet
"pride, politics & policy" -- someone really needs to stop with the lions/pride thing or I'mma have to buy a bunch of static cling pink triangles and go on a lion-raid again.
@Joel I'm eliminating the goatee again soon
@voretaq7 Aren't you afraid of getting fired?
Just saying - I don't trust a systems guy without a beard
@Joel I can keep a falsie in my drawer for emergencies :-)
18:26
@voretaq7 I may purchase one for conferences and job interviews.
@Joel Storage guys don't do beards. We do hats.
@Basil Oh my god you're right, why did I never realize this before
@Joel Actually...
@Basil h4x0r?
@voretaq7 Better. And worse. St0r@g3.
I'd fuck with a hacker over a storage guy any day.
18:31
@Basil xkcd is oneboxed, you know:
xkcd is oneboxed?
@Aaron of course.
I like todays
Am I terrible for laughing?
@voretaq7 I laughed.
I do now.
@voretaq7 Oohhh, that's chat msg # 3939000… you should get a prize or something
18:33
@voretaq7, no, you would be terrible if you asked this:

Q: Is "iff" considered a real word or just an abbreviation?

MBoberI wonder if "iff" is considered a real word (as LEO says) or is it just an abbreviation (as in Wiktionary)?

@MikeyB ... A kitten?!?
@MikeyB Is 393-9000 someone's phone number?
@Aaron Hmmm… I've been saying 'if and only if' to my two-year old… you mean people don't normally talk like that?
My phone number is a message in the English chatroom. =]
@l0c0b0x "I want you to find a program that goes out and creates an accurate diagram of our network". :|
accurate
18:38
@l0c0b0x They're called interns
@l0c0b0x I love this question. I show them the diagram and they're like "But this doesn't tell me which computer is in which room!"
@MikeyB 403
@MikeyB I do.
@Aaron <wades in to ELU with a comment on pronunciation>
@voretaq7 Would you agree that someone with sloppy orthography makes for a poor systems person
@MikeyB I can't believe I clicked on that [next time, please note NSFW] :)
18:42
@Joel But if your switch ports and station drops were numbered...
@l0c0b0x How is that NSFW?
@jscott Or if I was allowed to implement VLANS...
@l0c0b0x Looking at [REDACTED] isn't allowed in your workplace?
@l0c0b0x I only figured out it was (insert unicode symbol that voretaq likes here ) after looking at the description
@Aaron 1F4A9
18:43
not universally. I'm sloppy myself in informal contexts.
When writing something formal I would say sloppy orthography makes a poor professional in any field.
@MikeyB poo!
@Aaron And I prefer 🐼 ThankYouVeryMuch
Quick question, can I remotely make a machine 'gpupdate /force' through AD or something?
new south park song update for the 21st century / The Comms Room: "Sexual Harassment Unicode Panda"
@qroberts Can you just use psexec?
@jscott Didn't think of that, thanks!
18:46
Yeah I am familiar with sysinternals tools :)
19:01
@Basil mind if I migrate that to mSO - that's where it should have gone to start with ?
19:17
@Iain Go for it- I actually assumed that there was only one meta and it was for everything
Can you imagine if the WWII job postings were like tech jobs today? "Must have 3 years experience cracking Enigma while standing on your head." Of course, Enigma would be un-cracked at this time
@JeffFerland You forgot about the offers that ask you to provide 25 war references, vouching that you've been in wars past.
@Basil! Why you stir shit?
damn rabble rousers! RabbleRabbleRabble!
19:34
@voretaq7 I assumed it would be pretty straightforward...
@TylerShads And you'll work for medals alone, so you can show your next general how good of a soldier you are
Does a meta downvote mean that you don't like the feature being requested or proposed, or that you think it's badly written?
@Basil yes
@Basil You are a rabble rouser, you know that? You rouse rabbles!
@voretaq7 I don't participate in meta much because "it's not my problem" and "I can't help you" are hard habits to kick.
19:38
@Basil that's perfectly acceptable on Meta.
19:51
dear. god.
There we go
@voretaq7 why did I read that as "blind" instead of blond
@TylerShads perhaps if she were blind she could visualize the problem?
@voretaq7 oh of course
Standard Question: Is she a natural blonde? Because I suppose inhaling too much peroxide COULD do that to someones brain...
19:54
@voretaq7 I think that's the reason my gf dyes her hair black..she is a natural blond
oh the gems I have...
@TylerShads I'm waiting
"You mean they dont put the medicine in the glasses?" (in reference to how corrective lenses work) "How do you spell left?" "isn't washington in maryland?" (In reference to seeing awashington state plate.
@TylerShads I'm trying to laugh as quietly as possible. It's not working
@Joel imagine how I feel, I'm dating her.
...oh wait, I laugh anyway and post it to all my friends regardless xD
@TylerShads It can cause serious rifts. Once I pissed off a girlfriend with the ol' "Why are manhole covers round" thing
She couldn't figure it out. I told her "Because manholes are round."
19:58
its worth it, she doesn't get mad, surprisingly
Meanwhile she's trying to prove that a round cover won't fall in, a square one is dangerous, etc
@TylerShads That's what happens when you truly don't understand something.
@Joel …sigh
When she was younger my girlfriend once coined the ever-repeated "Wait, that necklace you bought me is metal? You told me it was white gold!"
@KyleSmith …
20:02
Yep.
@KyleSmith rightly able to apprehend, confusion of ideas, etc
@KyleSmith My first reaction was "That necklace is SO METAL!" *demonface*
\m/ o.o \m/
Math pop-quiz. How quick do I have to do this in order to earn $35/hr?
8 minutes?
20:10
@KyleSmith Dont' forget the time you spend talking about the job
I wish I still had a mirror of the job posting in my local craigslist.
7+ years admin exp. Exp with Exchange, DAS, branch office configurations, hardware deployment, blah blah blah.
"$20-35k DOE"
I should have mirrored it, I almost shit myself.
@JeffFerland It's nice to clear and legible postings that look like some of our questions: odesk.com/jobs/networking_~~86cf3792ead9e951?tot=243&pos=7
@KyleSmith DOE?
"Depending on Experience"
kills munin with fire
Good weekend everyone, I'm off!
20:13
How is Munin?
@MikeyB Enjoy!
@MikeyB Have a good weekend!
@LucasKauffman Is that your munin or someone else's?
@Joel mine, suddenly it stopped graphing I started debugging it, then apache starts to give me 403's on it
and I don't know WHY
@KyleSmith Dead. In a fire, apparently.
20:16
@LucasKauffman Don't know much about how munin works. Filesystem permissions?
@Joel checked them, I think it's because I use aptitude and another guy uses apt, it's broken the packages. I first did aptitude install munin, it gave already installed, then used apt-get install munin and it started downloading packages and installing
what the hell ?
@LucasKauffman TRIPWIRE. Someone's been mucking about
Just wasted the entire day building an RPM. :( Couldn't for the life of me figure out why it wouldn't install. Then, I had an epiphany... I was installing (with sudo) from a root-squashed NFS home directory. FFFFFFFUUUUU
20:35
@AaronCopley 8 hours, eh?
:D
@JeffFerland Well, minus typical sysadmin interuptions so really only about an hour and a half. :P
@AaronCopley Are you excluding time spent in here?
Unfortunately, that hasn't been very much today.
@LucasKauffman LMAO
20:41
LOOOOOLLLL
If you guys are into turntable.fm, a few of us from stackexchange are dj'ng
20:58
he knows how to drive lol
@PeterGrace Mix Master Big P.G ?
haha, something like that.
@PeterGrace We're very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints.
:'(
@LucasKauffman aww :(
@LucasKauffman tor. you needs it.
21:00
@JeffFerland the theme song's original is from Trigun :p
@KyleBrandt what's crackalackin?
@PeterGrace gah why the HELL do people think it's a good idea to only let you log in w/ social networks
Watching the daily show and drinking wine :-P
@KyleBrandt I envy your life.
@KyleBrandt Fuck Yeah!
21:02
In other words, calling it a day and waiting for the wife
I'm rockin out to this music and listening to the devs haggle on redis stuff.
Seems silly to haggle, one key per one value would seem the only fair trade
@PeterGrace you make me a mix on mp3 and post it on the soundcloud yes ?
@LucasKauffman you select songs and it plays them.
sorta like a collaborative spotify
@LucasKauffman: Site seem any faster for you today?
21:04
ow so I can select a song to?
@KyleBrandt yes why :p?
@Zypher Seconding this x100
@KyleBrandt @LucasKauffman rock on
We increased the initial congestion window to 10 , idea from one of our Devs Sam Saffron
(Thats right, our Devs think about TCP ;-) )
@KyleBrandt That's awesome, our devs are like "Can't you just overclock the router"
21:06
If you guys were unaware, we employ some EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT people.
@PeterGrace CONFLICT OF INTEREST
haha, I'm not. I'm a sysadmin.
We're stupid.
:P
@LucasKauffman: Basically, at the start of the request we send more packets before waiting for an ACK now. Basically, we bypass bandwidth delay product ramp up
@KyleBrandt You UDP'd TCP. Bitchin
21:08
Assuming the client accepts that
@KyleBrandt cool, I had some troubles the other day with slow loading, but I thought it was the Great Turkish Firewall that got congested :p
We had some issues over the past week or so
Mistakes on our end, some DoS etc.. was never the same thing for what we could see
@KyleBrandt networks are dynamic. It's never the same thing, even when it is.
Bastardizing your congestion control is a cool way of getting around the slow-start problem though :-)
I've also got a feeling there's been a lot of attention lately to serverfault, more questions (also bad ones)
Going to try a little more tweaking around there. Increase the HTTP keepalive time, turn off slow start after idle
We get screwed with SF, don't know what the deal is
21:12
@KyleBrandt Cosmic rays, bit rot, the usual voodoo
@KyleBrandt What are those holes in the trend?
We keep getting knocked down :-P
Google being mean
And the Xmas drops, but those are just short term drops
@KyleBrandt I'm pretty sure I was on SF on Christmas. hahaha
@Joel: I probably checked it too :-P But most traffic is anonymous in the SE network
People finding answers via Google
21:18
@KyleBrandt btw have you guys been experimenting with spdy yet?
Sam has been looking it a little. Everything is behind a HAProxy, so will probably play with it once someone works it into haproxy
@Chopper3: How things been going for you?
good thanks kyle, happier, less stressful :)
Some change in your life?
yeah, not a mod
Oh right of course :-)
That was a while ago
21:27
just back from taking 7 teenage girls to see 'The Hunger Games'
Can't fault you, mod never appealed to me
@Chopper3 Sounds like a noisy experience.
My wife read all 3 of those on vacation the other week
nah, they're bookish types
I started to listen to one on audiobook, didn't really grab me
21:28
the film's so much more subtle and oppressive than I'd imagined from the synopsis - much better than I'd imagined
@KyleBrandt I haven't read fiction in close to a decade now. Some part of me has this deep sense of guilt about it, but I guess I'd rather DO fun things than read about them.
@Chopper3 On a scale of 1-10 (1 being Titanic, 10 being The Matrix or something better) how worth seeing is it?
my scale's more McG (1) to PTA (10) - but say a good 5 to 6
@Chopper3 my scale varies depending on my mood and how much I want to see Leonardo DiCaprio's frozen corpse pushed off a board to sink into the ocean :-)
funny, my favourite film in a long time was the Muppets
21:35
well who the fuck doesn't like Muppets?!?
(Seriously. Who? Bring them here and I'll stab them!)
@Chopper3 My pet favorite film is The Thing, John Carpenter version
love that too
It stars Kurt Russell as a drunken helicopter pilot that burns an alien shape-shifter to death with a flamethrower in the arctic. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE
Is it me, or does it feel like Tuesday?
@l0c0b0x it's FRIDAY FRIDAY
