@Iain I love that so much it's not even funny
@ShaneMadden SANTA HAT NOA!
@Iain I love the @voretaq7 one the most
@Holocryptic Nice.
@Holocryptic I've got a maintenance window to do to tinker with a mess of an IIS setup.. but I'll get it fixed after that
@ShaneMadden What? Where are your priorities?
@Ward probably not
Hmmm, I don't know if Yaya is quite right.
I guess I'll change it to Derpy.
@Holocryptic waddya think?
18:10
@Ward Approved
Go with my blessing
Is there an easy way to go back to the default generated gravatar?
@Ward probably not
oo, good question. I don't know
Can you save the default one out to a png or something?
and then import it back in?
Derpy w/ hat for now.
Although my yaya image is still cached.
Ah, mine did go back to the default I had before
Just unselect the picture and it should go back
18:26
'lo
Hey. You need a Santa hat. Its mandatory now.
@pauska Hat. Now.
7
Q: It's Santa Time!

HolocrypticLet's do this. What with the DramaLlama being out in full force, I think it's time to take a breather and bring the funny back. To wit: I propose the Santification of your gravatars till after the new year. Some of us have already gotten started. You can use the image as your baseline. or ...

Do it
do it
NAO
make it the sock, too =D
@TylerShads LOL, yeah, a sock would be ok.

Love it
dang, it's hard to cut the hat out in paint
@pauska there's links to some editors up above
@pauska paint.net + magic wand. Click on the white space w/ that tool, then press delete
oh is that what you do...?
I was clicking like a madman trying to figure that out
18:36
Tis how I did it, and I think mine came out not too bad
@Holocryptic: WHY U NOT PROVIDE DONE PNG'S???
Then I had problems resizing it to fit my gravatar
I posted a PNG with a transparent BG earlier!!
3 hours ago, by Ben Pilbrow
user image
In MS Paint, there's a selection under the Image menu "Draw Opaque" I turned that off and it worked well enough.
Using Ben's PNG, that is.
@BenPilbrow ummm, there's still a white background there sir
:)
18:38
Cmon @pauska, you look naked in the chat history w/out a hat.
@pauska Y U NO GET HERE SOONER?!
IM WORKING ON IT OK
Just what we need...@pauska naked.... cringe
@Holocryptic oops, I just facepalmed, then realised you were joking
I fail

@Iain to the rescue
thank you sir
Thats....creepy
I now have an @pauska to elf :)
18:41
yessss
Makes me glad I don't use a real picture
There's pictures of me around here too...
updated
but no idea how to force sf to update from openid
err gravatar
It won't take long
few minutes at most
They've apparently improved the integration so you don't need to hard refresh the page anymore
@WesleyDavid HAT. NAO!
I wonder how hard it would be to write a user script that would replace @pauska's gravatar with that santa sock.
18:45
lol
@Holocryptic If someone makes it for me, I'll do it.
It should be relatively simple. I mean, this would actually be a 'One Line Of Perl' moment.
I just need one more uboat to get a "Nice Answer" -- Where's my sock account...
I mean... I wish I had a sock account.
I mean... sock accounts are evil.
I mean, @pauska is evil.
@SimonSheehan You need a hat, sir
@Holocryptic He needs two.
18:48
this is true
Here we go again.

AHAHAHAHA
very nice
cute kitteh
hah
mother of all..
18:58
@pauska I tensed up watching that
@pauska Sweet jumping holy shit oh my god..
whoa
I'd need new boxers if something like that happens to me..
I think I'd need to change my pants
Imagine if gif's had sound..
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA‌AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaa......aaah!
19:00
annnnnnd. Poop.
a ladder flew off the roof of a pickup truck that was right in front of me once, we were doing ~120km/h. I don't know how it bypassed my car, it just flew straight ahead, and passed me on the left hand side, hit the bus behind me
but this definitely beats it
You need a hat @dyasny
LOL, no xmas here, sorry
19:03
It's non-denominational
I mean it's not celebrated, it's over 20C and snow can only be found in a broken freezer
@dyasny australia?
@Holocryptic Israel
huh. Your profile says Illinois, and your Linkedin says UK/Ireland.
I bet you're a spy
oh, read that wrong. UK/Ireland market. Still, I think spy.
@Holocryptic LOL, IL as in .il :) It's quite common actually. As for linkedin, I really do need to update, left .ie over 3 years ago
19:07
...SPYS ALL OVER THE PLACE
@Holocryptic but of course you are right, I am a spy
now you can start thinking whether a real spy would have said that ;)
@dyasny Ohhhh, I know what happened. Stack Exchange changed their geo location thingamabob. You had put in IL, and then when they made the change it filled it out to Illinois
You can change it again in your profile
@Holocryptic good point there
19:11
I've been known to have one once in a blue moon
Right. I'm taking a break. Back later
Curious, can I run a switch off another switch (in a home networking situation), say a 5 port off an 8 port?
I think I need a more interesting Santification. I'll have to peruse my image library.
@studiohack Sure thing, at that level it should be fine.
@ScottPack would speeds be affected?
What you don't want to do is run a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch off a switch. There be dragons.
3
Yes, but nothing that should be too noticeable
19:18
lol, makes sense
@studiohack Well sure. Every machine on the second switch would be limited to a total speed of the port the second switch is plugged into.
thanks @ScottPack, @Holocryptic... considering that, since one room in the house has like 6 machines
and WIFI is sorta slow in here
@ScottPack duh, why didn't I think of that...
If you're just doing normal computing, it's probably totally fine.
thanks again!
I am for the most part
If you do anything like media streaming or the like, then you need to think about it pretty hard.
19:20
@ScottPack I do a lot of video watching, and my brother likes to do Youtube uploading
Just to make sure you don't end up with 5 computers all on switch 2 trying to stream bluray rips from a system on switch1.
so I might just try and get by with one switch
@ScottPack packet collision?
@studiohack Not collisions, but link saturation.
debating getting a $10 switch (8 ports) to upgrade my 5 port
19:21
Also, some very useful perspective is to remember what your ISP speeds are.
@ScottPack mine are usually under 4 mbps
Yeah, and that's a 100 Mbps per port switch.
@ScottPack so I'm well under- just ran a speed test, and it peaks around 4.04 mbps
So even if you are streaming Netflix, and your brother is uploading to YouTube, well, your bottleneck there isn't anything in your home.
that's sad...
19:23
On the wifi, if you've got neighbors clogging up the spectrum, try to get away from their channels. Or look at getting 5ghz (802.11an) clients and AP - there's a lot less crap clogging that spectrum.
@ShaneMadden no neighbors real close, I live in the middle of nowwhere, but the wifi is tricky, since its on another level, and I don't like all the wifi waves (health reasons), so I try to keep that to a minimum. plus, I run a server and copy/paste speeds are faster over the LAN than wifi
@studiohack Unless you're streaming videos or moving big files around, I wouldn't get too excited about the speed difference between wireless and wired.
@ScottPack backups. of photos/videos/music mostly, like 20-40 GB at a time sometimes
@studiohack Oh, right. Those are the sizes where it matters, yeah.
In that case I would recommend looking at a Gbps switch instead.
@ScottPack would that help even over the LAN, even though my ISP speeds are low?
19:27
@studiohack It's all internal, so sure.
@studiohack Yeah, definitely. As long as something doesn't need to actually go out to the internet, it'll stay all in the switch.
So if you're backing up from your desktop to a server, both of them in your house, then you betcha. That's a big difference.
If you're backing up to something on the Interwebs, then gig, 10/100, wireless...it's all the same.
@ScottPack wow... nice
This is the search you want
19:29
thanks @ScottPack
sounds like its worth it to spend an extra 10-20 dollars for Giga
I would say so. Pretty much any modern computer will have a Gbps nic. Plus it really helps when you start moving those big files around.
Like, for example, 1 minute as opposed to 30 for a dvd iso.
@ScottPack well, I don't do it that much, since my machines (mostly running XP) have a hard time on a home network - one day their shared folders are there, and the next day, their not
Ah, that's a different question for a different person. Much like most cleaning ladies, I don't do Windows.
19:33
Linux then? :)
And or Mac, yeah.
is an unmanaged switch going to land me in trouble? as in will I have collisions of data?
Nah, all unmanaged means is there's no settings to mess with, it's just a dumb switch
so you can't manually set port speeds, there's no vlans, etc etc
@ShaneMadden sounds good enough for a home user
But that doesn't mean there'll be collisions - performance-wise it's just as capable as any other switch.
19:34
but what I don't understand, is that other switches/routers can be bottlenecks if they are not also Gigas, right?
no need for managed switches at home, unless you're doing vlans.. which 99.9999999% arent
or if I have plain CAT cables (ethernet)
@pauska I've known of exactly one person who used VLANs at their house, and had a legitimate reason. Guest wireless.
Everyone else that I've seen do it was mostly for the nerdgasm.
@studiohack They'll bottleneck, but only for traffic going through them. Your fast traffic should avoid the slow links
@ScottPack perfect for motels, bed and breakfasts, and such, right?
@ShaneMadden confused?
this conversation has been very enlightening, I've been thinking about going into IT for quite sometime (finishing high school)
19:36
@studiohack lets say you have 4 PC's (PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4) and two gigabit switches (SwitchA and SwitchB). PC1 and PC2 is connected to SwitchA, and PC3/PC4 is connected to SwitchB. Between SwitchA and SwitchB there is a single network cable. What happens if PC1 wants to transfer something to PC3 at full speed, while PC2 wants to transfer something at full speed to PC4?
@studiohack And in his case they had a lot of people in the area that would come by often, and he would often work from home. So he basically protected his personal and work stuff from random guests.
@sam santahat...NAO
@Sam You are looking entirely too unfestive.
@ScottPack Yeah I've got a guest wifi AP. I've also got my internal wired/wireless seperated, so the wired can do jumbo frames. And a DMZ, but that's less necessary ;)
Sam
Sam
@TylerShads @ScottPack True, give me 5 mins
19:37
@studiohack: but dude - how many times does that happen at home? that EVERY PC needs to transfer something at 1gbit/s? It almost never happens in corporate enviroments
@Sam Tick tock
@pauska so you could argue that giga isn't worth it for the home
@ShaneMadden I considered setting up my wireless on a completely separate routed network. In the end, I thought it sounded like too much work so I went and made a drink. :)
@studiohack Well... HD video streaming can be a bit "jumpy" if someone else is downloading/transferring files at the same time
small unmanaged 1gig switches are very, very cheap..
@pauska at my place, if one person is uploading to youtube, then the entire house/network slows to a crawl
@pauska $20
19:40
@pauska I actually picked up an 8port Gbps d-link for 45 bucks about 2 years ago. The damn thing has a 16-Gbps backplane!
@studiohack thats not the LAN, it's the WAN (the internet connection)
@ScottPack yeah, switches that aren't line speed is getting more and more rare
ohhh, gotcha. the LAN would still be fast, but not the WAN. that makes sense
@ScottPack Hah, fair enough! I actually just got a new mikrotik router for the home net - guest is gonna get its own routed interface once I finish getting it configged, lol
@ShaneMadden In my case I would has just popped in another nic. Using a pc platform has those advantages, though. If I had more guests, I would probably do something fancy with multiple SSIDs and the like.
Since 90% of my guests are the in-laws every couple of months for a weekend...yeah.
I'm not sure giga is worth it, since the rest of my network is also not gigabit... and I'm not always in a hurry, and don't to that much large copy/transfers
Sam
Sam
19:45
@ScottPack done (whenever it decides to update)
@ScottPack I'm currently running on an Astaro VM - it's been a little finicky though, and I hate having the whole network down if the ESXi needs to be touched.
@ShaneMadden Don't touch ESXi. Problem solved!
never mind - stupid me, it was migrated from SF
@pauska Power outages don't play nice. And I need to bridge the wired and wireless if the router's down to even get to the ESXi to fix things.
um I don't follow.. how is astaro/esxi dependent on you briding?
or - how is the bridging dependent on Astaro?
19:50
@pauska Yeah - wired and wireless are separate, need the router to go between them. ESXi is on the wired, everything with a monitor is wireless.
And the whole network's in the basement, so I can't just string a cord on over to my desktop
@studiohack Well, it's kind of middle between SF and SU.. it is a server product
@pauska leaving as is for now... thanks!
but then again, he broke it by dual booting
(or she..)
thanks for the help and advice @pauska, @ShaneMadden, @ScottPack
gonna stick with 10/100 mbps for now :)
I'm toying with ideas for my house (when I build it some day)
it's getting more and more common in Norway to build a technical room where you put everything that has to do with power, water heating, air circulation etc.. it would be cool to fit a 19" rack there and install the HTPC/server/whatever there
(and have dual cat6 in every room plus roof-mounted cat6 for access points w/PoE)
I wonder if there are any products that could extend hdmi over cat6 without loosing quality, now that 10gig is getting more and more common
or that would probably break hdcp..
19:58
@pauska I think there's some means of pushing HDMI over network cables, if I remember right..
But yeah if it's not 1 to 1 then HDCP will give you the middle finger.
hrm..
thats pretty cool since it can also do two-way IR
just that.. who makes IR enabled keyboards with trackpad? hmm?
Thankfully I only have one room that I give a damn about getting video in, because that crap's a headache. And Sonos is just amazing for the whole-house audio setup.
20:14
'evening
@syneticondj hey, how's it goin?
quite christmassy, thank you. stuck figuring out how to effectively use GIMP to put santa's hat on my bunny's head
Indeed, that's a requirement. Check out pixlr.com if you end up wanting to smash GIMP into tiny pieces, as is customary.
is that a Google service?
@pauska uuuh.....
20:24
@pauska ...........?
can... not... unsee
rum! stat!
sorry, perhaps you're one of those beliebers or whatever its called
@pauska HDMI is already running over Cat5
@pauska is this your contribution to the campaign for being able to hide pictures in chat?
@Pauska I have a server "cupboard" at home as it happens, with cat5 drops to each room where I might need computer services. It was a very good idea, I think. My brother (not an IT guy at ALL) helped me with the cable runs while we were re-doing my heating pipes, and went from "why are you even doing this" to "when we fix up my house can you wire that up too?"
@RobMoir I have a Server room :P. and Cat5e to every room. (Hello also)
20:30
hello
I don't need a server room at home! I do think that wiring up the home is a great idea
I just have a cupboard that has the router, a switch, a NAS box and my printer in it.
@RobMoir When my uncle built his house we bought wall plates with cat5,coax and phone for every room.
People still have landline phones?
Sounds like you were planning ahead there
20:32
Really nice compared to running separately.
@Jacob No hat no chat!!!!
3
@ShaneMadden We do.
I have landline here
@Ward Where is this hat?
its cheap as part of the interweb + TV + phone package I get
source on meta for the hats, Jacob

oh good, the picture has scrolled up
I'd like to take this time to say how much I hate @pauska, thank you /bow
Will the gravatar pic change really take a day?
Yeah it's pretty much immediate - give it a minute or 5
anyone around use nod32 for business?
20:49
No one's allowed to answer until you put on a hat.
@Ward My photoshop trial expired :(
That's the new rule laid down by Holocryptic
If I can do it in MS Paint, anyone can do it.
2
@Jacob open-source failure
@Ward on a Mac
I thought Macs were for artists? Isn't there an "add a santa hat" app already?
20:54
@Ward Standby, uploading to gravatar now
@ward I would not rather think of an app but a Finder button
Uploaded, back to my Q does anyone use Nod32 for Business AV?
AV is for girls
I just put jerseys my Grandma uses to knit and present me with around my servers. Never had any viruses.
