Hey @RobertMoir. Long Time no see!
@MikeyB Touché, sir.

3 hours later…
04:13
Hey!
Comms rooms is about what?
04:48
@RicardoPolo boobs:
and ponies:
And in an hour or so, the people on UTC+0 will check in and the fun really starts!
05:27
And I guess another pony picture is good so that the almost-naked Japanese babe isn't the first thing on the screen...
(Don't scroll up at work!)

2 hours later…
07:18
hey @TomOConnor how's it going
G'day
hey Iain
how're you ?
ok for a monday, you know how it goes. How about you?
much the same, weird light here atm very red
07:25
its nice and bright here. And noisy, but that last one is because I'm covering helpdesk duty this morning and 2000 students are all trying to pour through two double doors in front of me at once
did the fist pass at tidying up the garden at the weekend and have a few strange aches and pains
that'll do it. But I bet the garden looks at least a little bit better to compensate
sure does - have to keep an eye on things now and as the go over cut them back and mulch them
yeah... you've just reminded me i need to do some stuff in my garden... doh!
finally my house is (mostly) finished its renovation
it finally feels like a home again
Great !
finished just in time to enjoy the winter
07:31
hehe yep... now you've tidied the garden up so that its too cold to go out there!
we've enjoyed it through much of the summer though
well that's what matters
its nice to have somewhere to relax after a tough week at work
aye, we bought the house for the garden
very nice... I'm like whatever the opposite of green fingered is, so that sounds great to me but I know i'll never have that kind of garden... more power to those of you that do!
07:39
good day
how are you today Tom?
Alright. Pondering what to do today..
I've got a train to catch later today, but not a lot else to do
sounds good to me. doing stuff is over rated. unless its your own stuff for fun
Well, i got made redundant on friday, so until i line something else up..
yeah..
I've got a week's holiday, then i'm trying to block solid with interviews
shit :-(
was that unexpected?
totally.
Although only 2 weeks after I wrote the architecture plan that was to cost the company 2x my salary a year for the new server infrastructure they wanted
07:46
what a crock of crud
They're also canning 2 senior PMs, a senior developer (who knows the platform inside out) and one of the new social media managers
wow
sounds like a bit of a bloodbath
The CTO claimed I didnt' fit in with the team
BUT.
I talked to a few former colleagues, and they all said that was utter hogwaash
i hate those kinds of excuses. Its better if they're just honest, even if its harsh
Yeah. If i'd been un-teamworthy, it would have been better to make me aware of it before just saying "here's our bullshit excuse, don't come in on monday"
but because they didn't.
07:49
indeed
that also implies that I did nothing wrong.
le sigh
08:04
sorry man, being made redundant under any circumstances sucks

2 hours later…
10:28
that's bad news Tom, sorry about that
although I heard a friend had died this morning so that's sucks too
@Chopper3 Oh shit, my condolences and such =[
Monday's suck.
@Chopper3 My condolences :(
one of those deaths that's kind of a surprise on one hand but not on another - oddly enough we both went to the same primary school (years apart, he was 35) but only became mates 7-8 years ago - small world eh
10:46
Ugh.. Condolences

3 hours later…
13:29
@Chopper3 That sucks. And reminded me of a "small world" story.
Back in the BBSing days, I was hooked up to a random BBS and the admin interrupted me for a chat. "Hey man, did you go to $X Montessori school?" "Yeah, I did." "Hey, I remember you. You bit me on the arm." Guess I make a lasting (dental) impression.

@ChrisS NO. No. no. a little bit.
@Iain Do you think the mention of "minecraft" is what elicited the +14 ?
I don't even want to know where it got all those votes.
Oh @serverfault tweeted it
Oh, and it's the hottest question on SE.
I have no idea but it and the top answer just don't deserve that level of voting :(
15:11
There ought to be a good dupe of that somewhere..
@Iain the question doesn't deserve its votes, but I upvoted the answer.
I also want to clobber the guy asking the question with a software design textbook
I'm sure I have a heavy enough one here somewhere

Q: Can a Single Virtual Core on a ESXi VM use more then 1 physical core?

LumaI have a server running dual quad core cpu's with hyper threading. @voretaq7 when things like this go so unloved :(
@jscott Nice. What did their outage end up being this time?
15:19
@ShaneMadden it just came back today right?
so.... 4 days? maybe 5?
@ShaneMadden Last I read LOLIDK
Failed switch? Anyone?
@jscott Hub.
not switch.
Hub.
!!!!
@voretaq7 You're kidding?
15:21
this is RIM we're talking about - Nothing but the best^Wcheapest^WWHERETHEFUCKISMYEMAIL.
@jscott yes, but you believed me. That tells us something about the general impression of this company's technical capabilities, doesn't it? :-D
That architecture was a good idea when mobile devices didn't have an IP address. They need to throw that crap out.
@ShaneMadden and replace it with what? looks at iPhone Oh…
Before Verizon had the iPhone, I had a Verizon rep swear up and down to me that the kept-alive HTTP connection for ActiveSync was the main cause for the overload of AT&T's infrastructure, as well as being a massive battery drain.
*raises hand* hey RIM - I have a question!
If your core switch blew up, and you apparently had no redundancy (or it was so egregiously broken and never tested that it obviously didn't work!), why didn't you have a spare in the closet to configure?
oh right - because you're RIM. All the best technology of the 1990s.
The nice thing about the iPhone is that it's so desirable, our Admin staff are buying them personally. We get to ditch their district-owned BB and make one more step away from the BES/Notes horror-show.
15:25
@jscott . . .
dude.
Lotus motherfucking Notes?
2
I'm.... I'm sorry man. I didn't know!
@voretaq7 Hey, cut me some slack, they've had that crap for like 15 years.
@jscott that's what EVERY Lotus Notes admin says!
And if the number isn't at least 15 they get dirty looks and bad things said about them behind their backs.
"Luckily" someone found out GoogleApps for EDU is "free". So were going to The Cloud....
@jscott . . . so from bad to worse then?
@voretaq7 We're trading Notes Script for API-calls-over-HTTPs, Maybe a draw?
15:30
@jscott The cloud rained - all your data is gone.
6
@voretaq7 It was a hell of a lot more complicated than a core switch failure. That was just the trigger.
@voretaq Oh, we've tried to explain how that goes... Even with Postini.... The higher-ups bought into The Cloud, there's no going back.
In fact, they've added a new word to the lexicon of the district: "Towers [of Babel]".
In reference to any "offline" application that cannot "talk" to other applications to share <s>shit</s> data.
When we started putting BES in for customers, our choices were Exchange, Domino or Gropewise. The decision was made to push Domino for SMB.
We've since ran away as fast as possible to BES/Zimbra, but one of our customers actually *really likes Domino*.
@MikeyB I'll grant that, but I've personally been involved in system recoveries from "Oh my god the generators caught fire and dropped the load" that didn't take 4+ days. I expect better from "mission critical" services like crackberry
@MikeyB you really shouldn't contract to provide IT services to the mental patients.
@voretaq7 Yeah… I can't discuss what happened :/ But it was one hell of a screw-up.
15:38
Acme Co has been hounding me to renew our license for XYZ Software we've ordered from them for several years now. There was a question about the licensing, so I just contacted customer support; the license for the version they're trying to sell me isn't available yet because the product will not be released for a month or so. But they want me to buy now.
@MikeyB its OK we'll just blame you :-)
@voretaq7 I'll take credit :p
@MikeyB I insist on cash and carry.
::leaves dollar bill:: ::carries out rack of servers::
@ChrisS Bwa ha ha ha
I must be the first person in the world to ask Acme Co how their network license works... Seriously, Named User, Device Install, and Concurrent User are the 3 most common by far, and I'm sure you had one in mind when you came up with "Network" licensing.
15:50
@ChrisS Also known as, "we're cash-strapped and will go bankrupt if we don't sell come copies of a product that doesn't exist yet"
@ChrisS "It doesn't."
Not only is this taking way longer than it ever should; but their hold music sucks, and it keeps breaking up to really cap it off.
@ShaneMadden well, Dartware just sent me a "Hey we're raising our prices. Wanna renew your license now at the old rate?" email...
@ChrisS aw how cute! you mean they've got their hold music plugged into a stereo in the basement? :-)
@voretaq7 I'm sure it's one of those $5,000 jobs that you load a single 20-minute MP3 into and it plays on a loop...
@ChrisS those cost $10k. $5k buys you one that plays a CD.
15:53
They probably paid extra for the "Analog Interface" to the PBX.
@ChrisS we're moderninzing for IP PBX systems - It appears as a SIP client now!
We've got a Cisco system.. It's got built in Music on Hold, not sure how it's internally routerd (probably a SCCP client, like a phone)
F---. It's licensed per Device Installation (he thinks...). That doesn't play well when I don't actually install it on computers anymore (use Application Virtualization)...
I should have asked him how AppV factors in, since their license does not specify that the software must be installed in the first place before using it.

It's lunch time. f- this.

@Shads0 when my wife goes away, I always celebrate this by getting a chicken, bacon, onion and pineapple pizza from Papa Johns (a US pizza delivery chain, if you're not from the US) -- it's the only time I get to order a pizza like that without being vetoed.
@PeterGrace Am from the US, and I got meself bout $15 worth of Wendy's in front of me, yum.
@Shads0 HELL YEAH. I love the wendy's value menu.
@PeterGrace And I think tonight I'll top it off with KFC (she's vegan so I'm going to enjoy that one especially)
@Shads0 MUAHAHAHAHA -- Leave some chicken bones in her sock drawer or something.

@Shads0 ... You BASTARD now I want KFC!
@voretaq7 You're welcome
and I can't have it because I was a fat bastard last night and went to McMeaty's :'(

IDK how in the hell he hasn't died yet.

@Zoredache Yeah, I meant the ssh/busybox approach. Should have made that clearer.
I know, I was just being picky.
20:33
@Zoredache Oh… dude… "For more control and security I need them to use VPN to access the internet and without it just have access to the local network."
@MikeyB, I read that bit, but it still doesn't make much sense. If he doesn't trust clients inside his network to see each others traffic, why would he permit it to cross the Internet?
@Zoredache Because he read somewhere "VPNs are encrypted". It's probably from the same mindset as the manager in this awesome story: thedailywtf.com/Articles/Taking-a-Dump.aspx

Q: Enterprise backup w/ smartphone options?

AlbionIs there software available for centralized server backups of corporate mobile devices (Blackberry, Android, iPhone, Windows Phone 7)? I am looking for something that will "notice" when a mobile device is on the local wireless connection and back it up to my LTO4.

@ShaneMadden I refuse to explain how dumb an idea that is.
"You're doing it wrong." is about the only short comment I can think of...
Yeah. I got about a sentence into a comment twice then closed that tab. I can't fathom the words.
My theory is that the conversation ends at "An executive lost their Angry Birds scores"
I wish I could think of a clever snarky answer that made use of the fact that they want to back up to their LTO4.
0
A: Enterprise backup w/ smartphone options?

voretaq7This is a REALLY BAD IDEA that can fail in any number of horrible and ghastly ways. To name a few: The device disappears from the corporate network 15 seconds into the backup The device's battery is run flat by the backup The device's processor is busy with the backup (and you get "My phone is...

Q: Best way to control access?

kevmo314I have a few servers that serve different purposes (and thus different users use each) that authenticate to an LDAP server (I do not have permission to modify content on the LDAP server). What is an effective way to manage access across these servers so not all LDAP users can authenticate? I've...

@ShaneMadden yup, that one
My comment was gonna be along the lines of "Dude, you're talking about like 15 different systems and one backing store. This is going to be a clusterfuck, just make sure you've got lube."
@voretaq7 Not even one - two backing stores. One for authentication, another for authorization. Why? Why not?!
@ShaneMadden can be one backing store (MemberOf in LDAP)
@voretaq7 But he can't touch the instance used for authentication
22:42
but you know that shit's gonna scope-creep its way right up that guy's ass: "OK, but now I need to lock out this group of users except during business hours. in whatever timezone the user is in."
@ShaneMadden Then it's No Longer [his] Problem.
I can't access all the systems? Someone else can do the integration.
<- stopped doing that nickel-and-dimed-access bullshit 2 jobs ago. You want me to build a system I get access to all the subsystems, and the people responsible for them.

And a lockable room in an unused corner of the building.

And a mineshaft.
In fact forget access to the system. Just give me the people. And the mineshaft.
The mineshaft is critical. For disaster testing.

for what?
Someone asked if adding a 2nd HDD would decrease battery life.
I said yeah and someone commented with a link to pcpower.com saying that HDDs draw 30W and some other BS
A whole MacBook pro (the unit in question) maxes at 65W. I pointed that out along with some other simple math and suggested that the commenter focus on things that he actually knows.
Some diamond over there deleted my comment with all of that detail in it and told me to be nice or he'd ban me. I told him that on every SE site that I've participated in, the mods haven't protected users that argue in favor of blatantly wrong information and that he did a disservice to the community by deleting my comment.
He didn't like that to say the least
@MarkM link to the question?
1
A: How much will adding an extra hard drive to my MacBook Pro affect battery performance?

MarkMHaving a second hard drive will certainly decrease battery life by a noticeable amount. Behind the CPU and LCD, the hard drive is the largest drain on battery. A word of caution: RAID 0 is almost never a good idea, unless you'll be doing backups constantly and don't mind being totally down if a ...

@Zypher you can see missing comments, I assume?
@MarkM no longer they have revamped employee access levels ... we kinda gotten to the size that making everyone mod/and or dev doesn't really work but i'll point the community team at it to smack the mod if need be
