@Sam need mod hammer, see above...
Few more spam flags should burn those answers - not sure exactly what the threshold is.
Yeah, but we need him to burn the account

Q: Why isn't all internet traffic encrypted?

VassWould there be a problem if all internet traffic was encrypted with HTTPS or some other protocol? What are the trade offs for using encryption all the time? Is the speed of the connection reduced or are there other complications?

I am trying to get WOL (wake-on-LAN) working.
I can send the magic packet to the PC without issue and it will wake when it is sleeping.
...but it isn't working from a cold boot.
Have you tried adding boobs and/or ponies? Those are pretty magic packet themselves.
IIRC its a bios setting to tell it to still listen when powered down, but don't ask me which one.
@RobertMoir Yeah, I've got the BIOS open right now.
...but all I see is an option to enable network booting.
(Which is a different thing.)
some bioses are... more comprehensive.. than others? I don't tend to touch this stuff too often but as i remember it, there's an option under power management to allow it to WOL and, I think, something else connected to the ACPI power states -
20:04
There's nothing I see anywhere for that :(
At least I can wake it from a suspended state.
I don't know what to suggest then... I'm sure its there on all the bioses we use at work and i'm pretty sure its there on this machine i'm using right now, though i don't plan to reboot to find out, sorry
20:24
Totally different question now...
I'm using the Linux tool etherwake to send the magic packet.
I assume that since I'm specifying only the MAC address of the network card that this will only work locally.
How can I wake the machine outside the local network?
Again, can't remember the exact details (can you tell I switch my IT brain off at the weekend?) but you can program most switches to forward magic packets in much the same way you can get them to forward DHCP
Yeah - it's a raw ethernet packet, so it can't cross broadcast domain boundaries without some help. There's some wake-on-lan proxy software out there that might do what you need.

@ShaneMadden: You may have joked about the MITM attack on the keyboard cable, but: keyghost.com
