@ChrisS no improvement whatsoever
I rather like that one. =}
I think it will be used to justify minor changes that aren't required like the recent episode on meta
I must be out of the loop, was there an edit war on meta?
I'm so desensitized to the whiners, I wouldn't have put so much effort into avoiding the cluebat.
Also, you should have included a Watchmen reference, that's an upboat magnet.
15:09
What's watchmen ?
and those changes are a whingers charter - good job I don't really bother reviewing any more
@Iain $DEITY - GTFO - Geek card revoked!
fisting Yes Yes
fuckfest Yes Yes
gangbang Yes Yes
lol :D
nice things
eep
@Iain There's a Watchmen movie, which is fairly good (it's too true to the graphic novel, screen translations like that don't quite "work" - like Sin City or 300). Or you could read the graphic novel, which will take much longer than the 2 hour movie.
movie, movie, movie!
15:14
@ChrisS I was just looking it up and it really did pass me by
watchmen also had an excellent soundtrack
@MichelZ Dr. Manhattan used Double Team! It's Super Effective!
I really loved the movie, but I love that over-the-top comic book look (loved the look of Sin City, 300, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, etc) and the soundtrack was pair well with the look, created great ambience. The average person probably isn't going to be into that so much, and the story is decent, though littered with superhero/supervillian tropes.
I'm one of the only people I know to like Watchmen, Scott Pilgrim, and Tron: Legacy.
They had all pretty bad-ass soundtracks, even if some of the plots were wonky.
That awkward moment when I realize the first two pages of a subreddit are all visited links...
15:24
Tron:L's soundtrack was awesome. But I'd expect nothing less from Daft Punk
anyone familiar with 802.1x auth design logic?
Issue to solve:
Wpa2 encrypted wlan already there, i need to have another non-wlan device hooked up into that network, Setup device>LAN>X>801.X authed WLAN
at best without any form of NAT/routing on X
possible or no-go? some names to google for would be helpfull aswell, thx .
@NathanC usually that means it's time to go to bed and let the page fill with blue links by morning
@ChrisS Or do actual work...>.>
or that
APC started sending me spam snail mail ...oh joy.
And all because I downloaded a utility!
15:27
nevermind, got the word to search for: Wireless Ethernet Bridge, meh its definitly too late to do actual work.
And my stomach's rumbling which is also distracting x_x
If you ran on electricity (directly), the you would cost about $0.33 per day.
@ChrisS added...but where did you find it? I checked various google searches, etc. for it
Meaning I searched "fope word list" etc.
@TheCleaner If I revealed all my secrets you'd have no reason to keep me around.
@ChrisS Not true...you're the best dressed avatar here
15:38
I'd love some opinions. Client just sent this: Does Exchange have a built in messenger service? If not what software would be best? How do we start sharing the calendar and contacts?
Sametime.
I kid.
@ewwhite opinions on the dumbness of the questions they are asking?
@ewwhite Shove Lync in their face and be done with it, lol
@NathanC my thoughts too
Deploy Mirc and Trello.
15:41
@TheCleaner LOL
I know part of the question is dumb.
But is Lync the go-to?
@TheCleaner Going back to the do-it-yourself world? ha
@ewwhite Lync is the messenger service, but it's a converged communications platform that's server heavy... People love the functionality, your hardware budget will f-cking hate it. I've got a script that sets all calendars to be viewable by everyone else. Sharing contacts is a bit difficult
@ewwhite Basically. It integrates well with all the other Office crap.
Or is hipchat good enough
15:42
@ChrisS Oh yeah, Lync's requirements are ...steep.
@ewwhite Are they currently not on Exchange....is that where the question is coming from about calendar and contacts sharing?
I moved them to exchange last week.
Of course, Exchange has steep requirements too... MS has no interest in efficient code.
I'd think calendars are self explanatory.
Exchange runs as a VM at most of my sites.
I am working with a client now that uses Slack.
LOL I said Trello above...slip of the keys...I meant Ventrillo.
15:45
And I liked hipchat at last job.
But know nothing about lync
Here @ewwhite send this out as a response:
Burn
All 4,747 conversations in Promotions are selected
I guess I don't delete email
Disabling SELinux is almost never a good idea. — Michael Hampton ♦ 6 mins ago
Why do people still do this?
@ewwhite Lync is easy enough to deploy via VMs. As long as you don't start getting into PBX functionality.
15:51
Running out of time to get 10k points this year, I wanted my damn rubber duckie from @Wesley :(
@RyanRies This year was a fail for me. I.e. normal.
@ChrisS You know, I tried to run a guy on electricity once. It didn't work, I got charged with manslaughter, and my legal bills were outrageous.
I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like Serverfault really ran out steam this year.
How so?
Not just you, not by a long shot.
15:57
I just didn't feel like upvotes and views were as easy to come by as they were a couple years ago. I'm not saying that all my answers were great, but still.
@ChrisS how? By attaching him to an exposed wire I plugged into a wall dickey. :p
Yeah, participation has fallen, in large part IMO because of stuff like this becoming more and more common: serverfault.com/questions/634474/…
ServerFault is Devops Daycare.
Luckily a good chunk of my upvotes this year came from old answers I gave a year ago or more showing up in people's search engines, etc.
That's been going on for about 2 years now... less upvoting (more downvoting too)
And we lost a bro in chat when @MDMarra got hitched!
16:01
People come and go... It's the way of the world. I've wondered if I'm past due at times.
Yeah
Been trying to do some CUDA programming, but it's mind-bending.
damn... I got something useful from su.com!
I looked at OpenCL once. Just once.
There's still plenty of dumb out there...but less and less participation.
Well, the more downvoting thing would be because of the higher concentrations of crap that deserve downvotes... Which also makes it harder to find the stuff that deserves up votes.
@HopelessN00b 4-5 years ago any decent question usually solicited 5-10 upvotes, now you'll be lucky to get 2...and yet view count on the question might be 150+
@TheCleaner The Google change in May really upped the influx of new dumb. I know it's good for the advertising numbers, but I'm concerned that the community is slowly falling apart. Of course, that's been the case for years now and we're still going. But at some time there will be a tipping point...
@Iain But did you sign up for the challenge on the blog... ? =)
#17 year rank
Oh what the hey. You want me to send you a Buds rubber ducky, then I'll send you a Buds rubber ducky.
16:05
i'm ok with that :)
@Wesley no
Participation is increasingly painful, so yeah, less and less of it. If I wanted to spoon feed obvious answers to ungrateful moron-jackasses, I'd spend time working at work.
Still better than the TechNet forums
@ChrisS we're way past the tipping point, my scraping says that <30% of questions come from people who's home site is SF
Best of a lot of really bad options, yeah.
16:07
We re nothing more than tech support for SO
5
I need to step up my game. I'm at #15 on the year and have never been higher than #12 in previous years. (Not counting 2009 as I had just joined)
@RyanRies Those have always sucked because it was difficult to navigate properly, sign in, etc. and then when you did post a question it was often considered the wrong channel...or worse you expected a moderated response because you had an EA and never got one.
@Iain I mean the point where almost no new questions get answered because there's no experts left to answer them, they've all been driven away by the hordes of help vampires. We're in a slide right now where there are less and less experts over time, more and more people asking for help without contributing.
Ugh, 99.9% of TechNet and MSDN forum posts = "This post should be moved to X sub-forum"
Basically anything they can do to avoid just answering the $#@ing question
I really hate forums these days. Soooo many people chiming in with absolutely no contribution to the discussion.
16:12
@ChrisS I don't think that will ever happen because new people find the place all the time. Unfortunately the time between talent walking through the gate and them running screaming out again is shortening all the time. The net effect is less talent and answers like the one @MichaelHampton commented on earlier
One of the problems we have now is there are very few people with enough rep to do all the chores and as fewer people are being bothered to vote the number will diminish more over time
I didn't come here to be tech support for SO.
@MichaelHampton that's what {you,we}'ve become
KntDD is expensive as hell :(
Must trick my company into paying for it somehow
NE only has 40% of it's questions from SO users and it closes more than half of them
16:41
SF pain again today?
@ewwhite Yeah we are bitchin' and moanin'

@MichelZ Heh. My girlfriend's laptop has had the BSOD a couple days in the row citing NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. Checked the disks and the logs...it's all healthy. Even chkdsk reports nothing.
The logs did say something about Disk 1 which is an external drive...those "I/O operation retired" things.
@NathanC some people aren't born with oxygen
@RyJones Referencing...? :P
there is a copy of the full forum thread somewhere, you should find it
@RyJones Ha, I remember that...

Coworker from the Networking team comes over to my desk, sets down a sugar free redbull and walks away
@cole they hate you
lol
I hate rebuilding a laptop, I always forget something.
friend at work (that I've known since long before we worked here) got canned Monday. Last day is Thursday (apparently), makes for awkward discussions
@NathanC That's the funniest thing I've seen all day
@cole What color? I had a red this morning, thinking about an afternoon white.
@NathanC Exactly why the world needs soylent green. Some people just have no other uses.
17:10
@ChrisS the original RedBull Sugarfree
Have you had the white absolute zero Monster yet?
@HopelessN00b I was going to start buying soylent but the wait from the first payment until it shows up is like six months
Oh, Red Bull... Nevermind, brain fart, we've got Monster
@ChrisS I've been drinking the white Monster absolute zero ones myself.
@RyJones Oh, wow. Interesting choice for a product name. Think I'll stick to real food, though.
We've got Monster Zero Ultra (white), Zero Red, and Ultra Blue... All 0 Cal, Zero Sugar, full of caffeine.
Are Absolute Zero a different flavor? Too many confusing names...
17:16
Delivery is delayed to these recipients or groups:
I hate seeing shit like that
Really? I'd like my bosses to see that more. Like every time they try to communicate with m... anybody at all.
@cole I tried the "low carb" one ...tasted like...bitter carbonated water.
Of course, all there is here in the little market is regular red bull and Amp
:(
Buy caffeine powder from Amazon and put it in whatever you want. Like 0 calorie water. Or flavored water. Or bacon.
@HopelessN00b I use crystal light...they have caffeinated ones
Because of how much caffeine I usually drink, it doesn't have much of an effect though :P
17:32
Yeah, but I bet they don't have one with LD:50 per serving. I do. :)
Damnit I hate our timeclock system ...hit punch twice by mistake and it clocked me back in for lunch then back out
@NathanC You're on a timeclock instead of being exempt and salaried? weird!
@freiheit Sadly, yes.
Last place I worked had time clocks. After a punch you couldn't punch again for 30 seconds - stopped the accidental double punch.
On the bright side, I have approval for overtime for this project I'm working on, so $$
I have mixed feelings about salaried ...it'll be a likely pay raise, but I'd lose overtime lol
17:41
Man, if I got paid hourly for all the hours I work? BLING BLING $_$
@cole Hah, yeah. I'd be less incentive for them to overwork you as it'd cost them more...
@cole Consult!
Become a conslutant.
I'd be the sluttiest of conslutants.

17:57
@cole Because of all the sleeping you'd do on the job?
@84104 that's my coworker
@84104 Hey, if I don't get paid when they interrupt my sleep in the middle of the night for [painfully_stupid_thing], it's only fair that I get paid for sleeping on the job.
18:15

18:33
sup @Basil
@Basil you have Brocade switches for fibre, right?
@cole yup
I'm in the process of moving the servers from a 48000 that's seen better days to a dcx8510
@Basil is it easier zoning via command line - or is it better to use the GUI?
@cole CLI.
In my experience, at least
Especially once you know the CLI well
@Basil dang, I don't know it at all
Don't want to fuck production stuff up either
I hate zoning
and i know it's easy, I'm just always afraid I'm gonna mess it up
@cole I can probably help
it's linux on the inside, so if you're comfortable with that, you'll pick it up really easily
18:48
@Basil ah then yes
Any help would be appreciated - it's really down to just me at work lately.
every time you do zoning, you might have to alicreate aliasname, wwn if it's not already zoned to something. If you don't know what the wwn is, you can portshow portnumber and see what's logged into the port it's plugged into.
Once you have an alias, it's zonecreate zonename, "server_alias; storage_alias" and then cfgadd config_name, zonename
after that, a simple cfgsave and cfgenable config_name is all you need
figures...CPAN is on the fritz
tossing 502 bad gateway errors everywhere
If you kill your session, any mistakes you make that haven't been cfgsaved will disappear, allowing you to start over.
ctrl-d is your friend
Heh. A manager wants me to stand up a new VM and install InfoPath 2003 on it. Too bad it's EoL, and no longer legally obtainable. Otherwise I would have been so amped about doing that ASAP.
19:07
installed pnp4nagios for some graphs...now just have to wait for it to compile data :P
Can't work; compiling [graphs]!
@cole Why? You are irreplaceable. You can fuck up production. ;-)
And here come the nagios emails!
@Basil thanks man - I stuck that in evernote - I'll see if that'll work for me
@cole also, www.brocade.com/downloads/documents/html_product_manuals/FOS_CMDREF_720/commands‌_a_z.Fabric_OS_Commands.html#2368912 (edited link)
19:20
@Hennes The problem with that line of thinking is that if overlords didn't make horrible decisions in the first place, no one would be irreplaceable... so you can't rely on irreplaceablility to protect you, because they just make another horrible decision and get rid of you anyway.
Aye. Still, it felt good to write that.
@HopelessN00b you can buy the most recent version and have a downgrade right, don't you? :D
@MichelZ Shut up.
:p
No new 2003 installs in my environment, because it's technically impossible. Whether it's technically impossible or not.
Good morning, Gentle Peoples All
@HopelessN00b I demand that you install that shit!
19:31
@MichelZ Maybe on my last day. My bosses piss me off much more today/this week, I might just downgrade every thing to MS-DOS 8 and walk away. :)
Well...okay...our secondary SQL server just died randomly
disappeared from DNS too
that does not sound like randomly dying
vCenter taking its sweet time authenticating...
I'm also having great fun with vcenter these days
trying to add a regular domain account as a vcenter administrator and all I get is authentication failures
Curious..it's powered off
19:39
@NathanC Yeah, I've found that powering servers off will make them inaccessible.
It's possible I never powered it back on after upgrading ESXi and rebooting the host...
@NathanC Nah, it's clearly a result of [stupid_policy_you_want_to_eliminate]. Also no auto-power on rules?
@HopelessN00b They are enabled ...so...it should've come back. checks event log
Nagios was reporting UP all this time, so it's weird
@NathanC Sounds like the server's decided to go on strike to protest its sysadmin being underpaid. Happens around here all the time.
@HopelessN00b Heh. Shut down on 9/25 (when I did the update) and nothing until today. Guess it just wanted an extended vacation.
Oh well, it was the passive server in the failover cluster anyway
19:45
@NathanC hope it's well rested
@RyJones Indeed.
I need to find a way to use this: i.imgur.com/NK3W8Pv.jpg
20:00
Anybody else use Audible.com ?
20:18
does anyone here have any idea how to deal with Intel AMT?
I can only find downloads for desktop boards on intel.com, and Dell only provides the HECI driver - not the actual AMT software
@ChrisS I used to. Still have a bunch of audio books I never listened to on the treadmill because I'm not sufficiently brained enough to listen with comprehension and run at the same time.
I think I just handled something really well at work, between my boss and I.
He said it was driving him crazy that a coworker has called out two days in a row and won't respond to texts/emails/calls.
Then said "I'm sure you too" (as in, it's driving me crazy too" I said:
I stopped caring what everyone else is doing - I can only focus on what I'm doing.Because I cared too much about what everyone else was doing before, and complained, and complained and nothing changed. So complaining does nothing but make me feel worse - so, I just don't care. If people don't want to show up for work and leave every day before 4:30 and come in late - that's their problem.
20:33
@cole You go cole :P
@cole If it's driving him crazy he should just be fired ...tbh.
@NathanC he responded with "we should talk"
and sent out and invite for Friday to talk
@cole Very nice.
@cole He should promote you to team lead or boss of that group. Beat some ass.
:D
@cole good luck
20:54
@Wesley beating is @HopelessN00b job
preferably with blunt objects
@MichelZ I didn't know he was into S&M
@Wesley he loves pain
21:07
@Wesley Do you remember what speed you listened at? 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, etc?
@ChrisS Usually 1.5, but for deeper material 1.25 or 1
I went through The E Myth and If I recall it was largely 1.5, but for areas that made me think, I had to drop to 1.
Same here, generally. Just ran across someone who listens at 1x, even light material.
Time to go home an prepare myself to work tonight... laters all!
So I have a client yelling at me for patching bash for Shellshock...
EFF THEM
@ewwhite IP plz. I'll shock their shells.
@ewwhite because at broke ?
21:12
@Iain yes
@cole Ugh. While your boss probably liked what you said, I say screw that. If I'm off, I'm off. A day off work means a day off from even taking the boss's emails, calls and texts.
"Why didn't you tell us you patched bash on September 28?!?"
...or it's not much of a day off.
@ewwhite isn't that fixed now ?
I patched it within 15 minutes and a workaround...
and puppet
and 2 hours later, Red Hat released a new at.
but client is pissed because of the original Shellshock patch!
21:18
@Wesley @RyJones It didn't come off as me being a dick, right?
@cole it comes off as reasonable pushback to unreasonable circumstances.
@HopelessN00b I agree, but this guy does this all the time. He's called out every day for weeks at a time.
@cole Enh, well, why do they let him get away with it? He might be at fault for having a no-show job, but the bosses are just as at fault for allowing him to be employed in a no-show capacity.
Anyone using any internal IM?
@Travis we use Sametime.
@HopelessN00b I agree - like I said to my boss - I don't care. I've complained to him multiple times and the Sr. Manager and nothing has changed.
I hate that this ultrabook is touchscreen - makes the font so damn big

@cole Integrate with AD?
@Travis yessir - but it's Notes lol
We use Lync, which integrates well, obviously.
@HopelessN00b we use Lync 2013 here. It's a huge step up from Lync 2010
Thinking of trying an open source version so it's free.
21:25
@Travis We used Jabber at NetApp.
@RyJones Ah, never used 2010... and we just use it for IM purposes (and limited ones at that), so we might not even notice the differences/improvements.
@HopelessN00b the iOS clients are amazingly much nicer.
@cole I was looking at that too.
@RyJones Yeah, we don't even deploy it to mobile. :( Although, maybe that's a blessing in disguise, as the CTO/CIO uses it to micromanage us... if it was on my company iPhone, I doubt I'd last a week before throwing it out the car window or whatnot.
@StackExchange Holy doodoo.
21:36
So my almost-10 year old Logitech MX1000 Bluetooth Laser mouse is giving me the shits as it's started lagging terribly like you move the mouse, then 2 seconds later the cursor moves. Any suggestions for bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos?
I switched away from bluetooth and haven't looked back since
@Travis How come?
I hate the idea of another fucking "thing" sitting in a USB port. Makes the whole thing just that bit less portable to other computers.
Also Logitech do not seem to have a direct replacement for the MX5000 keyboard. Do people not go for "luxury" keyboards any more?
To me it wasn't ever as reliable. I always kept losing the connection, especially with the MX keyboards. Had to "join" them together constantly. Since then I switched to the unifying "thing" from Logitech and have just used their mouse for the past 6 years.
I ditched the Logitech bluetooth receiver after almost day 1. It sucked.
Since using either internal bluetooth or little cheap USB dongles I haven't had an issue
Don't really seem to ahve a choice though
That could be it then. I didn't have BT native to the desktops I was using at the time
21:48
Maybe I should switch to one of those Microsoft Ergonomic keyboards. They probably suck for gaming though. I'm only a casual gamer (I game with a bluetooth mouse) but it has to at least kinda work
I got one for a woman upstairs. Hate it!
Well I really only want a mouse. This keyboard is fine.
Makes sense to replace them both at the same time, but perhaps not if there's nothing I like
I just searched for a solution and I found a serverfault question with an answer by me. I hate it when that happens
lol
22:03
@faker I do that a lot with my blog. "How do I fix this? This seems familiar."
googles
"Oh, right."
huh, another co-worker got fired. so, two for the week.
@RyJones What for?
@RyJones That's... interesting.
The review cycle just ended, so I suspect they were under the line for keeping around.
It's too bad, I really like both of them.
Ah I see
22:06
Wow.
I wish they'd fire some people at my work!
@cole Be careful what you wish for
They'll fire the only other person who does work in your dept
@MarkHenderson you realize....I'm literally the only person working this week?
Or they'll fire you
@cole Wow that sucks
They'd be doing me a favor if they did!
PLEASE FIRE ME AND LET ME COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT.
I know someone who works at a company which just got bought. They told them you will all be fired in 1 year.
They all get a huge termination pay.
And if they finish the 'data migration' to their new owners sooner, they'll be on garden leave
living the dream...
22:15
What's garden leave?
nvm google told me
> Garden leave or gardening leave describes the practice where an employee leaving a job – having resigned or otherwise had their employment terminated – is instructed to stay away from work during the notice period, while still remaining on the payroll.
Never heard that phrase before
Man I wish I could.
22:33
@cole You know, "fired=unemployement && quit=nomoney" isn't really quite right... Well, each state is different, but... Generally if you're fired for really good causes you don't get unemployment, and if you quit for really good causes you still get unemployment.
I don't think unemployment is means tested here
If you don't have a job, then you can apply for it
no fixup protocol smtp 25
That seems to have saved me today
Oh yeah, I finally found a reason to be annoyed at systemd today.
@freiheit Why?

Q: CPU clarification in vCenter

@ewwhite Turns out that (a) RHEL7 renamed "nfslock" to "nfs-lock", (b) provided a convenient symlink in the systemd stuff so that you could still "service start nfslock", (c) almost everything works identically with a symlinked service alias, and (d) except enabling (which returns an error that gives approximately no clue what's going on)
22:41
@freiheit d'oh
@freiheit Ahh, systemd. When it works well it's great, when it doesn't it's WTFs all the way down.
@ShaneMadden When I ran the "status" thing and saw "enabled", but "is-enabled" shows disabled and I couldn't enable it ... I didn't notice that the status says "nfs-lock.service" instead of "nfslock.service"...
@ShaneMadden Yeah, I'm fairly new to systemd and I still think I'd rather write a systemd *.service file than an init.d script...
@freiheit they have nothing to fire me for and I wish I could quit.
