Morning.
gmorning.
any one can help on centos fresh installation yum update is not work cent os 5.5
What errors are you getting?
following one

Any extra info in the logs? /var/log/yum...whatever the file/dir is?
i m looking at that only
just in min i'll paste
14:34
ok
That error looks pretty clear. I'd try browsing that URL from the box. w3m is text-mode browser. I've had cases where the openSUSE repos (also YUM based) are actually missing a critical file, which will trigger that.
yum.log "0"
Chris S
:2860 Who needs a text browser; it comes up 404 on my computer, the file is missing.
I'm powering up my fresh 5.5 VM to see if I get the same issue.
Or there's that...
Chris S
They probably updated something this morning and it got missed; I'm sure they'll have it fixed before long; or you can try contacting the maintainers.
14:37
:2869 i have firefox
and it is work
i can google from there
It's working for me...
If you really need it right now, start mirror-hunting to see who does have the file, and configure Centos to pull directly from there. Set it back to mirror.centos when done.
Chris S
Must be one of the mirrors doesn't have it yet...
same issues posted at cent os also
but no one has right info on the same
My system has no problem updating
14:38
i dont know i m facing 1st time this kind of issues
elinks i can browse the serverfault.com
i have # all the mirror in my .repo file at /etc/yum.repos.d
14:59
:2877 thanks a ton /var/cache/yum/extras/mirrorlist.txt file was missising
Spiffy!
Coding Gorilla
So, anyone using the new IE9 beta?
Biglig
15:16
Just installed it. Very minimalist!
Never thought I'd hear that about IE...
Biglig
Well, there's about 2Gb of code to make it minimalist... :-)
Coding Gorilla
The reason I was asking is I've seen a couple of the SF question toasts come up (in IE9), but they're empty
Coding Gorilla
I have it in compat mode, wiating to see if that fixes it
Hm, what's the difference between the Beta and the Platform Review?
Biglig
15:25
Apparently, Platform Preview installs the new rendering engine side by side with IE8 for developers.
Biglig
While the Beta is a beta of the whole browser.
Biglig
That's rather a good idea, actually.
Biglig
Hmm, must be be nice to Microsoft day. ;-)
Minimal... so they copied Chromes visual ethos? :)
That just leaves Firefox to become more minimal. Firefox is so ugly to look at
Chris S
15:40
I like FF with the Tiny Menu add-on: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1455
@ChrisS are you on FF now?
I'm really enjoying IE9. I really like the add-on analyzer in IE9 that looks at the load times of your add ons and lets you see what's slowing it down. The ability to break away tabs into new windows or other windows is great too.
Chris S
:2915 Yep
@ChrisS Can you do me a favour? Could you try the Acid3 test and let me know what score you get? acidtests.org
Chris S
94
15:43
Shame, not fully standards compliant
IE8 gets 14
Chrome... 100 :)
Strange though - my FF only gets 69 - update time
Chris S
v3.6.10 here
I didn't expect Safari to hit 100 on Acid3...
Chris S
My IE8 hit 20.
@ChrisS wierd... 3.6.3 here
now downloading 3.6.6
Chris S
Wow, that's a few months old. I've got mine set to auto-update; just installed 3.6.10 today.
15:48
For some reason it won't update internally
100 for me using FF on MAC
Raj - what does Safari on MAc get?
Safari on Mac gets 100.
Safari 5.0.2
let me check that out
@ChrisS Yep, 94 now on 3.6.10
Chris S
15:52
I'm not too worried about it, I'm sure they'll keep improving it.. Isn't the 4.0 beta out, or something like that"?
i m using 5.0 Safari i got 100
Yeah - FF 4b gets 95 :/
i got 2 diff system the same for both the system i have diff ISP i got 100
It's all just willy waving anyway - only browsers that are 100% Acid3 compliant are Opera, Chrome, and Safari
Raj - it's not a connection based test - it's a browser standards compliance test - which is why IE does so badly at it
ok i was not knowing that bcoz i was thinking may it is coming from cache so i try on 2 diff system thanks for you update :D
15:57
Acid3 is a test page from the Web Standards Project that checks how well a web browser follows certain selected elements from web standards, especially relating to the Document Object Model (DOM) and JavaScript.
On SF i normally learning every some thing or other with you all guys are very good teach !
Oog, I'm one upvote away from earning my first gold badge. It's like waiting for my SAT scores to come back.
dances like a mad thing
16:12
Dammit someone beat me to that upvote ...
I was holding back to give the 100th one too :-(
WHO WAS IT!?
Chris S
:2950 Link?
is still dancing
108
A: How do you search for back doors from previous IT?

sysadmin1138It's really, really, really hard. It requires a very complete audit. If you're very sure the old person left something behind that'll go boom, or require their re-hire because they're the only one who can put a fire out, then it's time to assume you've been rooted by a hostile party. Treat it lik...

Chris S
Done
This might call for a celebratory Mocha.
party time !!
16:16
Dang phone call spoiling my groove.
Stupid work.
Chris S
The Fanatic badge isn't hard to get with a bit of persistence.... Of course the Great Answer badge is more meaningful if you ask me.
Fanatic is hard if you have a certain thing that occurs once a month that keeps you away from the internet for 36 hours.
Chris S
I think they should changed the threshold of the Great Answer/Question badges because SF don't get near as many votes as they do on SO. Same with SU really.
Wow. 4 of the 10 'Great Answer' awards were for answers on the "Coolest Server Name" question.
Chris S
:2969 yeah, kinda sad really.
l0c0b0x
16:29
I thought 'community wiki' posts were considered 'posts' and not 'answers' (oO)
Yeah... that one didn't start CW IIRC, so things may be weird with it.
Chris S
CW Questions/Answers don't count toward rep, but do count toward badges the same as any other question/answer.
16:44
I gotta say, I'm impressed by IE9
fast and uber lightweight
lets see if it can save sessions now..
nope, it still cant save tabs like firefox does
I wonder why
Coding Gorilla
The new "tabs" page remembers sites you visit a lot, not the same but it's an interesting idea
Darren Kopp
hey, if i'm a linux nub, what distro would you anyone recommend for installing postgresql? something stable and easy to use
I've come close to Fanatic nearly twice. It's hard if you don't want to glue your ass to a computer 24/7/365, which I already do and it's still hard. My honeymoney ruined the first one. I was staying in a resort that didn't have phones, clocks, or Internet access.
Coding Gorilla
@DarrenKopp: I prefer openSUSE myself, I think YAST is great
I enjoy getting badges but for some reason they have never motivated me
I never have tried to get one
16:52
Ah, just something to do, @Kyle. There's not many more milestones left. I make personal goals, like exceeding number 14 on page one.
Darren Kopp
:2987 openSUSE is the novell one right?
Coding Gorilla
basically, openSUSE is still open source tho
@Warner: Beat Evan ;-)
Darren Kopp
:2992 great, thanks!
Coding Gorilla
:2994 np
16:54
I intentionally don't set goals like that, @Kyle. As that would be something that would create a negative impact on my life. I try to reserve that sort of dedication to things that serve larger visions.
@Warner: Good thinking :-)
/me heads of to lunch ..
:2985 Which is why you're still married ;)
haha Izzy.
My GF would sinbin me if I was avidly checking SF on my honeymoon!
I was on my phone up until the resort without Internet access. ;)
16:56
Heh
I took my gf to Egypt and the UK to meet family and for a romantic getaway. Clocked up a $1800 phonebill on my work iphone on data
:o
But admittedly, a fair chunk of that data was her using it
Ouch, that's no good.
Upvote this tag synonym for me please? serverfault.com/tags/pci-dss/synonyms
You betcha.
Ended up with a salted caramel hot chocolate over the mocha. This... is dangerously good.
Coding Gorilla
:3009 I dont have the rep :(
17:05
Me neither :\
Jordan Reiter
Hey all, anyone here familiar with SELinux?
Jordan Reiter
Hey Izzy where did you go to in Egypt? (lived there for a year)
Coding Gorilla
@JordanReiter I'm "familiar", wouldn't say I'm an expert
Jordan Reiter
I have SELinux in "permissive" mode but it still swallows a good chunk of the CPU from time to time.
Jordan Reiter
I'm hoping to get rid of this error message by addressing the security problem, if any, that's causing it.
Jordan Reiter
17:09
Mind if I paste it in and you take a look?
Chris S
:2988 They don't really motivate me either; well except for the Fanatic one, I actually tried to get that one; the rest I haven't tried to get, they're just fun, like you said.
Coding Gorilla
feel free
@JordanReiter Cairo (family there), Luxor, and Sharm
I'm half egyptian
Jordan Reiter
@Izzy: cool! I lived in Alex for around a month and Cairo for around 10 months. I had a great time. Egyptians are good people.
Jordan Reiter
Okay, raw audit messages follow:
17:11
Thanks guys, I had been waiting for that one for a while.

Great sense of humour!
:2988 @KyleBrandt A few badges have motivated me. Getting my first 'Enlightened' did so. As did 'Strunk & White' when I noticed I was close to that one. Mostly it was rep mileposts (500, 2000, 3000, 10000) that did it for me. The only thing left for me now on that scale is a diamond badge ;).
Heck, may as well give all the synonyms a look-see: serverfault.com/tags/synonyms
Jordan Reiter
@Izzy Also, very generous although mad inquisitive. I'm Jewish and pretty much the second thing people asked me was my religion. There were a couple of occasions where it seemed like a major problem. The worst was in a microbus from Alex to Cairo. Halfway into the trip it leaked that I was Jewish, and one of the guys was visibly upset.
Chris S
:3030 I'd like to break 10k, but I'm not churning out answers in the hopes people will up-vote them.
Chris S
17:16
I don't really want the diamond... too many responsibilities come with that.
@JordanReiter I can imagine. I'm half Palestinian, and the Egyptians have a special place in their hearts for the Palestinian people and their plight. I know that religion != country (Judaism != Israel), but not everyone can make that distinction
:3034 Like having to talk to people like vgv8, and wield the Mallet Of Loving Correction.
But really, it's mostly my competitive nature coming out.
Although you could say Zionism is Judiasm, and Zionism is Israel...
I want to be a moderator. =)
Jordan Reiter
@CodingGorilla: hey, just wanted to check that the messages I sent to you were at all useful. Otherwise I'll just figure something else out I guess...
17:20
I like SF and SO as a company. I wouldn't mind being involved on most levels.
Coding Gorilla
:3040 Sorry Jordan, I think that one's going to be a little over my head =(
Crap, I lost most of my tag wiki on pci-compliant. I had it on that instead of pci-dss due to logistical limitations.
Jordan Reiter
@Izzy I disagree; there are plenty of Jews who are against Israel, and plenty of people who aren't actually Jewish who follow the hard-line (what some people consider "Zionist") position on Israel for their own reasons (especially Xian fundamentalists).
Jordan Reiter
Actually I consider myself a kind of Zionist but I think that can mean different things to different people. I think that Israel should be allowed to exist but that Palestinians should live there in peace as well. Basically, I like the idea of a Jewish homeland but that homeland should also be welcoming to the people who already lived there. I'm against the settlements, the wall, and dismayed at the horrible abuse of human rights that have been taking place there.
Jordan Reiter
As an Arab man once told my mother: "The Jews and the Arabs have always been brothers and friends. The Jews need the Arabs, and the Arabs need the Jews. It's only the people in power who brew conflict." Basically, the governments and militants on both sides are milking the conflict for their own purposes.
17:26
@JordanReiter Agreed, I was actually saying I can see the distinction between religion and the state, but many people can't.
I kinda think we should evacuate the whole region, and nuke it to a point where nobody will care about it any more. It seems incredibly silly that so many wars have been fought over a small piece of real estate.
Jordan Reiter
@Izzy Anyway, I'd better get back to work. ma3a salama.
Coding Gorilla
Isn't that the case in all of politics, politics in general is about maintaining power. People rarely use issues because they want the issues solved, rather they use them to get the upper hand on their opponent.
Chris S
:3048 +10,000,000,000
Jordan Reiter
@Zoredache -10,000,000,001 There are peaceful human beings living there, you know.
17:28
@Zoredache Wars have raged in that region for millennia. The Crusades as an example. It's the centre of all 3 Abrahamic relgions.
Chris S
:3050 Sort of a pessimistic view of the world, isn't it...
Jordan Reiter
@Zoredache missed the evacuation bit. Still, being uprooted from your home sucks. Ask any refugee.
Chris S
:3052 He said to remove the people first, we're not killing anyone.
@Izzy, yes, I know, thats why I think maybe people would be more likely to stop fighting if we simply removed the thing they are fighting over
Coding Gorilla
:3054 I prefer to think of it as a realistic view :)
17:29
@ChrisS Maybe, but it's certainly the model of politics practised in the USA
It would almost certainly not work, but a nice silly idea.
@Zoredache Where would you move the 30m inhabitants of the region? Invade another country, change its name, and evict the current occupants? Rinse and repeat
Jordan Reiter
Okay all, it was fun. I guess I/PT will always be a powderkeg issue.
Jordan Reiter
Bye all
See ya
Coding Gorilla
17:31
Moving people, destroying the region, it wouldn't matter; it's not about the land, its about the control and authority the people who "lead" get from the conflict
@Izzy, what we really need to do is develop a brain-interface technology. Then we will gas the whole region with something that causes them to sleep. Then we plug them into the matrix which allows them to believe whatever they want.
You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize... Ignorance is bliss
Crap - I've killed our AD reporting server
Coding Gorilla
Anyone have an easy way to extend a disk partition on win 2k3?
system disk?
Coding Gorilla
yea
17:34
VM?
Is the free space adjacent?
Coding Gorilla
yep
yep to me or Z?
Coding Gorilla
both :)
Chris S
I just hope that someday everyone realizes that power in large quantities is its own burden.
17:35
Shut it down, attach the disk to another server, start that one up, extend, shut down and reattach to the original as the C
Coding Gorilla
oh, beautiful idea! :)
Coding Gorilla
@ChrisS: stop beating me by 10s :(
Coding Gorilla
I need the rep more :P
Chris S
:3083 Sorry, couldn't resist.
Does the slowness of the vSphere client make anyone else want to turn to hard liquor?
17:39
Sweet, politics and religion at the same time. You guys want to talk about abortion too?
@izzy ... i have a bottle of scotch in my desk drawer cfor that reason and many others
Some people have way too much time on their hands
And those people are usually the ones that ask questions that should be in SU
I'm amazed what people use their time for
on to something completely different: I had no idea that Microsoft had a storage calculator for Exchange. This is neat and extremely helpful stuff.
Chris S
:3092 PS2 and USB are both 5vdc; it should be pretty hard to fry anything (though anything is possible with cheap electronics).
17:47
Good point, Chris. I'll remove my comment.
I was thinking pinout being munged.
Chris S
:3096 Is it that much worse than chatting here?
ChrisS: Yeah, it is. I learn stuff by watching people discuss things :)
Feed items comes up blank here aswell btw (norwegian IE9)
@Warner, why do you think that was a troll? It was a somewhat interesting question from a electronics perspective.
Coding Gorilla
@ErikPSkaalerud Compat mode seems to have fixed it for me
18:02
For a second, I was thinking that could potentially do some serious damage. I've had improperly grounded PS/2 ports fry mainboards. (IE. external metal shorting mainboard against case on PS/2 plug)
Ah, well using the connectors he describe there really isn't any issue. Just a chance of a bad connect...
25
A: USB ->PS2 -> USB ->thumb drive -> WTF?

WilThe adapters you have are pin compatible with each other and there are no electronics within them. They simply convert four pins one way, then back again. In essence, no converting is going on. picture from ( link )

wow.
18:16
yeah, wow..
43k rep on that guy
Hey do any of you know of software that will watch a specific directory and zip files dumped into that dir at specific intervals?
You mean like a queue processor?
I suppose
I just have a data dump from SQL with a DTS package and I want to zip those two files to make them available for download
I'm looking to see if I can take care of that on the SQL side
right now
I've written scripts that do much the same thing, but haven't bothered to look for software packages.
Indeed, @sysadmin1138. That's what scripts are for. Of course, there's the inotify thing everyone seems to like.
18:23
Well it looks like I can do this with SSIS:
NTFS doesn't have inotify that I'm aware of, and that's where I wrote such a thing.
I'm just going to have to convert my DTS package and I don't particularly have the time..argh
mihi
@sysadmin1138 on Windows you can use FileSystemWatcher in PowerShell if it is fine for you to have a powershell script running all the time and wait for filesystem changes in a folder
mihi
BTW is it normal that when you reboot a hyper-v host some of the guest vms will return with a stop error even if all of them are configured to save state at shutdown and restore state at startup?
mihi
it happens for us every month (patch day) for different vms on different hosts :(
18:41
The HTC customization of Windows Phone 7 looks totally delicious
Oh right, Windows. My mistake.
I need to find myself a profile picture
I feel like a "user1352" here
hm, gravatar says that I have a avatar activated
Chris S
:3142 If you just added it, it takes a little while to actually be used.
@ChrisS: It was activated already, I vaguely remember doing it several months ago
18:49
@ErikPSkaalerud, how about [gravatar.com/avatar/…
@ChrisS: When I go into acccounts on SF I can see my SU account, and the profile pic is there :o
@Zoredache: The thing is.. I already have a avatar set
Chris S
Is your e-mail address the same on both SU and SF?
Chris S
:3149 I like that one.
18:50
@ChriS: Yeah, they are both OpenID from the same gmail account
l0c0b0x
Gaah!... I'm blaming a windows update(s) that is making my browser disappear on my 1st screen at random times when I click an app on the 2nd monitor <insert upset emotion icon here>
and when I'm editing my profile on SF and click Change picture it sends me to gravatar.com - wich shows that I have a picture set already
Chris S
:3153 Not your login, your e-mail address on this page: serverfault.com/users/edit/9140
Oh
weird, my work email is listed.
there we go
brb.
Wee :)
do you see my new nick?
18:57
Mostly. The chat-screen still has your old one, but if I try and view your profile it takes me to the new one.
Aaaaand there you are.
reload the tab, the new nic/image will show up
Time to go hunt up lunch.
19:26
How would you respond if you found out that your new job has all sorts of pirated and unlicenses software running?
That topic has been well exhausted on SF, @Erik. Search around.
oh.
Bottom line: due diligence and CYA. Make sure you communicate the risks and document the decision. That's a business decision.
either of these three. 1) demand a pay rise, whilst obviously thumbing through the relevant copyright agency (for your country) literature 2) Start job-hunting furiously and then report then company once you leave 3) demand they get legal
submit them to the BSA? >:)
19:29
@Warner: I don't find many relevant topics, so I'll just discuss it here.
l0c0b0x
@pauska I'd hold a meeting with my supervisor and bring it to his/her attention. Suggest a plan of action to remove the pirated software and/or license whatever software is needed. Another thing to look at is the possible damage these software caused on the machine (as in virus/trojan/spyware, etc..)
All good and valid points, but imagine the scenario that you're the new second IT technician/sysadmin, and that the IT manager is the one who's installed all the unlicenced software
then you have to make a personal decision. Decide if you are willing to accept the risk to yourself.
Also - In a new job (atleast in Norway) you have a trial period of 6 months..
Keep the paycheques rolling in until you find something new. My concern would not be the tangible fact they have pirated software - it's the message conveyed about the culture at that organisation. If they're prepared to rip off and steal from others, and not give it a second thought, that isn't conducive to an environment that I would want to stick around in.
19:33
Ok, blah. I'll just spill it out: it's my new job.
l0c0b0x
I'd go directly to him and if he refuses to make it right, talk to his superior. If nothing changes.. eeek!
I guess I don't really don't know what the liability laws are like in Norway, you may need to do some local investigation.
l0c0b0x
@zoredache, indeed I wouldn't want to do that in the US. Who knows about Norway
Is there any chance that you personally could be put in jail?
That's a bad idea, l0c0. Unless you're prepared to be fired.
19:34
No
the company would be fined directly from the software vendor
l0c0b0x
@warner Obviously ;)
(and sued if they dont pay the fine)
There was a recent settlement from the BSA...
If they won't change, you have to decide if earning money is more important then your ethical concerns. Particularly if the job market sucks there, and there are not good alternatives.
The worst part here is that I'm not talking about the cheapest licenses out there. It's stuff like TS client CALS and vMware Enterprise Plus etc
19:37
I saw it reported but can't find the article now. It would be useful reference for communicating the risk.
Well. I think they will probably change if I make a fuzz about it. I'm just unsure about how I'm going to present it.
We really can't make that ethical vs pocket book decision for you.
Small company?
In US terms its small yes
Anyone recommend any small footprint virus scanner?
Like an .exe that won't actually install
19:39
Was about to suggest NOD32, but thats installed
For a one-off scan
Trend Micro has a web-based antivirus scanner wich works quite well
@Zoredache: I know. Was just looking for some advice on how to deal with this. I want the company to get fully legal on licences, and I'm going to advise them to do so when my trial period is over (6 months)
mihi
@KyleBrandt I like PrevX as a "second opinion". Needs installation, but will not interfere with other AV (only on-demand scanning), free for commercial use. But it will not remove malware if it finds any, only tell you so.
Zephyr Pellerin
20:44
Well this chat bit is pretty neat :)
I'm fond of it.
Zephyr Pellerin
I like it as well
Hmm... load testing won't work to well with rate limiting will it :-P
Zephyr Pellerin
haha
Zephyr Pellerin
If it does, then you've got some large problems
l0c0b0x
20:55
That's my first questions when I deal with people and load testing... "uhmm... any traffic shaping happening on the path?"
Zephyr Pellerin
