It's September, and in universities, that means tons of new people. New staff, new faculty, new students. Lots and lots of new people. Here at The College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University, we've got a banner crop of incoming CS students. So many, in fact, that we bumped up against one of […]

@TRiG You're about four hours late.
@MichaelHampton So I'm not the only person here who mooches about on imgur when I should be sleeping?

Q: Hardware to setup 10 Gbps test network

user3642186I'm a developer ( not a sys/network admin ) and I want to setup a simple 10 Gbps two node network at home to do some testing. Can someone point me to the specific hardware I need to buy? I need two 10 Gbps NICs, two sfp+ modules and fiber to connect them. Cost is an issue ( trying to keep th...

@ewwhite Oh, well, why didn't he say he was your old boss! I would have totally let him go shopping here!
Wealthy CTO of a financial trading firm...
I'd have been much less likely to close "HOW IS 10GBPS NETWORK FORMED"
It's totally a shopping question.
And besides, he didn't say he was a CTO. He said he was a developer. Which, judging by his SO profile, appears to be true.
We are not personal shoppers!
03:04
He is a trading dev. Who owns a firm.
But he really should have asked me privately.
And besides, he already knows what he needs. Just call up CDW or whoever and get some quotes.
His firm always went the cheap route.
No hp Dell
Supermicro.
I'm not even sure newegg sells half the stuff he needs, and if they do, it probably won't be as cheap as he could get it.
03:08
Ah, fuck it. I ordered some shit. I'll just figure it out the hard way. I've got nothing but time on my hands anyway. Maybe you should start up a site that answers those kinds of hardware questions.
That is fine. But where can I go to ask this question? I would love to figure it out myself and I'm sure I could but I just don't care and a bunch of people out there could give me a great answer right off the top of their heads.
Yeah, some site needs to do it. I don't know if SF is the place where it should be done, though.
This 10 Gbps stuff isn't exactly commodity stuff, it isn't like buy anything and it all works like with 1 Gbps. It isn't even as easy as figuring out what RAM will work with a given motherboard and most motherboards actually have tested and approved RAM that you can go find.
I'm not looking to become a 10 Gbps expert, or test different NICs or SFP or fiber, I just want a simple setup that will definitely work.
I learned enough to know what to buy for a small 10Gbps test network by reading Wikipedia...
Then I found out how much it cost, and said FUCK THAT
I need backup software... And would love opinions. But can't ask on SF.
I've been thinking for a while that the whole shopping question ban should be revisited. The question is, how do you do that without becoming a massive spam magnet or having a question with 44 completely worthless answers that refer to dead projects?
03:15
I don't know. Maybe a discourse forum?
Also, the shopping ban was designed for SU and then applied to SF later
@ewwhite The hardest part of putting up a forum is bootstrapping it, getting the initial content generated, so you can begin drawing people in.
True. But I think it's possible to have a pro forum... Maybe? Or maybe I just have Discourse on my mind ;)
Shhh @mikeyb
I could have a Discourse forum up tonight. But I don't have any spare domain names, and I don't have any content...
Maybe I could just scrape every SF question that gets closed for being a shopping question, and hope somebody comes along to answer them?
03:31
It's an option.
But shopping is a part of Sysadmining.
03:42
lol
@ewwhite: there's software recs I guess
That's a weird site.
It is, entirely
Also, I find parts of the shopping ban (and the eventual community interpretation of it) wierd
I end run it with "How do I pick _____" questions sometimes
03:59
So do you WANT shopping questions to be allowed and just judged on their merit?
@ewwhite: kinda sorta
"What network card should I buy?" BAD
"How do I select a network card?" might work if its a good question

Q: What do i look for while buying a mouse?

Journeyman GeekI'm doing a bit of research about mice, with the view of getting a new one. There's quite a few things that are obvious (for example, i wouldn't get a ball mouse) but there's a few things that baffle me. I notice most mice seem to be graded by DPI (though wikipedia says cpi is more accurate) an...

Something like this is essentially a shopping question, but until we all move to touch, or minority report style floating interfaces, is still relevant.
04:24
You never know when your stupid mistakes will help someone else...
Thanks for this. Simple solution to something I was way overthinking. — mattcaffeine 47 secs ago
I think that was my first or second post ever on SF.
05:24
hmm, today is x.509 day again for me apparently
I don't see "what do I look for in a thing" as a shopping question at all
certainly "what does this item in some specs mean and what does that thing help" is not a shopping question
G'day
05:42
I don't see shopping questions making SF better in any way. It's just be more ways for lazy people to pipe shit over us
So I've been getting swap usage alarms all weekend because some FUCKING STUPID JAVA APP decided to eat all the RAM it could get hold of and NOT FUCKING LET GO OF IT EVER. Whoever said Java has garbage collection is clearly delusional. The only way to garbage collect Java is with rm -rf.
5
:(
Worse, the FUCKING STUPID JAVA APP is the backup agent!
ha
people need to stop teaching java
java schools are harmful
05:47
I need to buy more ammo.
someone justified writing a new project in java to me the other day: "it was decided to write it in java so we could more easily hire people to maintain it"
@FalconMomot How did you get on with getting away from that java project btw ?
lol, and when I told him I was on that team and didn't have any part in the decision, he told me that as my senior he gets to make decisions without talking to me. which is totally not how my company works.
@Iain I've had very little success, but some other problems might be solved soon, and if they are I might be able to put up with it for a little bit longer until it becomes someone else's problem
I think my objection to it being in java and my offer to rewrite it in another language being on the record will shield me from any consequences when it blows up.
Sounds like a plan
and I've managed to make the other parts of the system not care when it blows up, so things will be alright and the product will still be usable.
just... java is unsuitable for any purpose.
man, I talked about some architecture, and someone was like "stop thinking the C++ way this is java"

@FalconMomot: You can write bad code in any language
@JourneymanGeek yup, and you can write decent code in almost all languages
precisely
Duplicate code was known bad decades before DRY became a meme.
05:54
it's even possible to write decent java code, kind of... it just runs poorly
@MichaelHampton yeah it's possibly the most major principle of software development
And you should hire people who write your preferred languages, not write code to fit the masses.
but if you ask this dude, the most important principle is object-orientation and encapsulation
"Lets use lead pipe for this building. Its easier to find people who can fit it!"
yup
pretty much
Yeah, lead pipe with lots of asbestos!
05:55
he complained that it couldn't be done in python because there are no "real" threads, and because of the GIL (ok), and couldn't be done in C++ because apparently we would never finish it
What? Did he think you couldn't do object orientation and encapsulation in C++?
@MichaelHampton: and mercury amalgum to fit it together.
no, he thought that implementing the component would have been too difficult to do quickly in C++
and it was "software is buggy when written in any language and we would be chasing different bugs had we chosen another language"
I am untellably angry at this person still
who has never apologized for constantly embarrassing me in public, harassing me, and pretending to be my boss
he did at least acknowledge that the friction on the team isn't entirely my fault, which is progress.
but then he told me I act like a "grand arbiter of all things"
05:59
Wasn't that what you were hired to be?
I don't think anyone is supposed to be that; I'm certainly not in charge of the project. the project manager is, and he intends technical decisions be made by consensus.
Rather than, say, technical merit?
I just happen to have solid reasons behind my methods, and tend to just do things that are clearly right and can have no particular controversy.
well yes, the point of consensus decision making on a team with strong technical skills is that you get decisions by technical merit
the trouble with merit is figuring out who decides what has merit
That only works if you don't have a bloody IDIOT gumming up the works.
yeah...
and I can't call him an idiot
06:01
And... that's what a project manager was supposed to do, I thought?
even though he thinks he knows all the things and in reality has a very narrow focus
no functional programming; little C++; mostly all java, and some experience in analysis of certain things.
Bring me in as a consultant and I'll charge your company an insane amount of money to call him an idiot.
almost no math.
lol, everyone knows it already, but can't say it
he's actually really well-qualified and skilled as a security auditor
he just has no clue when it comes to developing enterprise software.
and/or he thinks it's OK and inevitable for it to be clunky.
Then why is he doing it?
which really is only true if you live in java-land.
hmm, I don't know why.
06:04
@FalconMomot it has to be - it's enterprise !
@Iain yeah, obviously.
I used to work for this company that publishes an IAM application written in C++ for IIS
it was solid
And so now we have had a close look at how enterprise software ends up so crappy.
I suggest you redefine consensus to exclude anything that comes out of his mouth.
06:06
if I had one wish, I would use it to convince him that seniority is the least important qualification a technical person can have, probably.
if I had two I'd use the second one to make java disappear forever.
I think you've got those backwards. Use the first wish to make Java disappear forever. Save the second wish for something better, and just put a knife in his chest.
06:19
If I had one wish, I'd wish for five times as many wishes (I'm not greedy ;p)
would this be better off on webapps serverfault.com/questions/626761/… ?
not really
I think webapps dosen't really do self hosted
No, webapps only does webapps that other people host
ah
And if you want to close that one, you can close the other 117 as well
06:25
@MichaelHampton a quick glance suggests it's a sewer

Q: What is a good new server setup

ErnstCurrently we have a server with several functions: domain controller, SQL server, WSUS server, file server, print server, exchange server, backup exec And in addition we still have an old server with a custom program for timekeeping, and then another one as an antispam server. For the new setup...

13:49
Things you do while waiting for a compile: Harvest some fruit.
unfortunately
computers get faster
:(
And we get asked to set up server farms to run compile jobs on.
it's fine, today we say "I'm waiting for vagrant up to finish!"
and there's the evil cloud
14:04
@MichelZ: Code gets longer!
And praying VirtualBox doesn't take a huge shit all over the project.
(and eh. I've compiled stuff on my raspi. Its paaaainfullll)
@JourneymanGeek I've compiled stuff on an emulated ARM on my desktop. THAT is painful.
@MichaelHampton: Never more ;p
@MichaelHampton: I tried that
never quite got it working
@JourneymanGeek I just followed the nice simple directions...mostly.
14:07
@MichaelHampton: I did too. I'm not blaming the instructins, but needing to cross compile is annoying.
I tried compiling the kernel on a raspberrypi to include IPv6 support... Before it finished they released one which included it :D
XD
I'm probably shifting over the things my raspi used to do to my brix.
Where did you compile it on? USB connected drive? Or on the SD card?
@JourneymanGeek It takes about 3 minutes to boot
@Hennes: Probably SD card
14:08
@Hennes SD card
Oh wait, no, less than two minutes!
(lets see, the fact that I need a hub for anything that even starts to be power hungry, somewhat less packages ....)
funny thing is my current torrent setup should be faster, but I can't be arsed to set it up
(rtorrent and rutorrent)
Ah. I got the 2B rPi. 4 USB ports
All of them and the NIC are still connected to the same single USB bus on the SOC. So no performance gain expected by not needing a hub
14:12
@Hennes: it isn't the number of ports, its the fact that it reboots whenever you plug in anything remotely power hungry
Brown out ?
Suposedly fixed in 2B
However I never plugged in anything bar mouse, keyboard and HDMI to DVI cable
(and the microSD card to boot from. 32GiB)
(my brix has three ports, one of which is USB 3)
my raspi is currently a backup box vaguely NAS-like entity
@JourneymanGeek Ha. I build Bitcoin on that VM. I think it's the only ARM build of the Bitcoin Core code anywhere.
14:14
0_0
@JourneymanGeek (And it takes 12 hours instead of 45 minutes.)
Better have a lot of storage on your RPi if you want to run it though, the full blockchain is massive :)
@MichaelHampton how many years do you calculate on a coin? :)
@MichelZ You don't mine bitcoins with a RPi!
14:21
so what do you do on it then with BTC?
I suppose you use it to store, send and receive BTC?
@MichelZ You can either store your money, or send and receive money, or be a relay, or whatever
ah
RPi wallet
Yeah
And since it's a full node you can do anything a full node can do, like use it for the backend of a web app or mining pool
I suspect it would be too slow for running a pool though
I personally wouldn't ever run a full node on a little ARM device, but somebody asked me to build it, so I did
and I guess mining without ASIC's is pointless
14:24
@MichelZ Yeah, today it is
apart from when power is free
Yeah, but even then you won't be making enough to pay for lunch!
true
If you get your miner onto a 100 000 node botnet, then maybe you'll make a few bucks.
But you'll also make headlines.
at least your famous
14:31
@MichelZ Yeah, you're famous to Interpol!
better that kind of famous than paris hilton or kim kardashian-famous
14:59
Testing Veeam file-level restore...
this is getting interesting
@ewwhite what have you done yet with it? what's your feeling?
I've run a full set of backups of my client's single-host ESXi environment... I was amazed at the dedup and compression ratios.
the domain controller and a couple of Linux VMs took 8 minutes
@ewwhite with any storage?
I just did a full backup in 55 minutes, including all of the VMs in the environment
I'm using local storage on ESXi to house the backups..
and am trying to determine what my be cold/offline storage should be
but you can house it on UNC path's, I guess?
like another NAS device
15:02
another server? an appliance? USB? NFS/CIFS share.
the file level restore was unexpected...
unexpected good or bad?
it said, "I'm going to spin-up a File Level Restore virtual machine in 20 seconds... once booted, you'll be able to browse the filesystem of the VM you wish to restore"
looks nice
Oh, not really file level from a backup perspective then.
I think you need enterprise for that, tough?
@MatthewIfe if it's able to extract single files... who cares :)
15:05
For Windows VMs, it was able to just pull files directly
I dont care. But I do file leve backups and they are woefully slow.
I wanted to know the secret behind these amazingly fast backups.
but it had an option for "other Operating SYstems"
yeah, image based block-level backups
@MatthewIfe block level
that leverage VMware's changed-block-tracking (CBT) API
do you need change tracking enabled?
15:06
yep
yeah
or it just takes care of it
I didn't have to explicitly enable anything
so here's the dilemma... this software ONLY backs up virtual machines
and while you can choose any destination, it seems like having an offsite or offline option is a bit difficult
D2D2?
there is a cloud backup edition :)
right... that's true
TO THE CLOUD!
15:09
I'll investigate it
as long as you have a VPN with UNC/NFS access, it should work
or what's your understanding of offsite backup?
tapes?
I would (personally) define 'offsite' to mean. 1. Data is stored somewhere not on the same site. And ideally 2. Data is stored on portable media.
you would what?
tapes?
I would like tape, to be honest
I was pwned by a wild newline. Dont rush me!
15:11
:)
and Veeam supports tape... but It would need to be attached via FC/SAS/SCSI to a physical backup server
which then means I'd need a dedicated server to handle backups...
versus a virtual machine
how do you get back
Trouble with tapes is how often you rotate them and they genuinely require somebody there to do tape rotations (depending on their value anyhow).
15:12
when your "backup vm" is gone?
We use to have to store some of our tapes in tamper proof tape cases, ultimately stored in a vault somehwere.
tape sucks
but it's cheap
Also, when you go portable media you need a means to track each tape in case of recovery. So that involves usually some other sort of backup software to keep some form of metadata tracking on it all.
Backups in the more 'true offsite' case are a huge freaking black hole of a sysadmins time.
@ewwhite
could be of interest
ah damn, it's a windows software for use on the hyper-v host
I'll ask a backup question on SF :)
15:18
seems that vmware supports tape drives through partners though
"partner supported"
15:39
Back at the Toronto Film Festival. I'll write up a backup question later.
@ewwhite In other news there was a bicycle race in Liverpool. After 5 minutes 4 blokes were off the front. After 2h05m the 4 became 3 and another bloke tried to catch them up. 10 minutes later it was all over. This is interesting how?
My review of stage 1 of the Tour of Britain

Road racing is over.
Btw. Canadians are sooooo nice!
I'm loving the little cultural differences.
@ewwhite It seems alive and well here
Don't believe it. They are only acting nice to your face while they plot how best to feed you to the nearest bear and get away with it.
Blame Canada!
It's interesting to see how a country without a culture of slavery treats people like me.
What are the little differences?
People dress nicer. Less crime. I don't get followed in stores.
People smile
I'm not tarted like a criminal.
Treated :)
16:11
I wouldn't say those are "little" differences.
yes, the land of the free....
Free my ass.
I don't know if your ass is free or occupied
But @Wesley might know

that's a new username style ? facebook-100002861153108

@MichaelHampton it's still there
I'll ask around
@Iain Hah, found him already
It's a ghost town in TL today and I couldn't find anything relevant on mSE

Q: Can I ask about the efficiency of BIOS vs. Non Bios server boards?

Dave RoseCan I ask about speed efficiency of server boards in terms of having a BIOS or not? Or this question relates to the Super User category?

There are mainboards without a BIOS?!
Hell, server boards generally have a lot MORE stuff going on in the BIOS than desktop boards...
If you consider default firmware (e.g. on Suns) not a BIOS, then yeah.
Or modern EUFI stuff.
Well, yeah, I misspoke. All the firmware.
maybe if you brick it, it technically doesn't have one anymore

Q: Can I use a server to employ link aggregation between 2 unmanaged switches

slugmanFrom everything I read, If I wish to use link aggregation between 2 switches, they need to be managed switches--specifically, they need to support 802.3d spec. Now that I fully understand the difference between a network bridge and a bond, can I use one of my servers as a interconnect between tw...

That's stupid, right?
18:34
Doesn't using 802.3ad actually require all endpoints to know whats going on?
Yes it does.
So he'd need LACP on one switch anyway.
anyone here familiar with ipsec and openswan?
Nope
I'm familiar with ipsec and strongswan.
I asked a question on the main site regarding ipsec and openswan.
18:43
I understand it makes sense. That being said, I am trying to make due with the resources I have at hand. Unfortunately, It is not within my grasp to purchase an extra set of unmanaged switches. If I was in charge of a budget, than use I would go at it. However, this is for my home lan, and I have several servers doing different tasks. I know it is tacky, but what I want to know is if it is going to create any networking problems. I tried connected 2 links between the switches already, and experienced firsthand my lan being flooded with broadcasts. — slugman 4 mins ago

@ewwhite strictly speaking, as it's a home lan, he is in charge of the budget

Oooh, true
Who would think of using a server as a Switch?
Would this look better in black or in red?
(Desktop, work laptop and servers at home)
Not in the slightest inspire by the recent question or by L"ack racks. :)
18:50
No, and it doesn't happen to be sitting on one of those Lack racks either...
Soemtimes I wonder how cheap it is the make these lack tables.
I bought the one in the picture for Eur 10. And a year after that the prices halfed
They ought to just make them with the holes already in the legs.
That is the price to the consumer, not the price for IKEA to make them and to ship them

Q: Which one loads a Linux distribution faster, Bios or UEFI-based server boards?

Dave RoseI want to assemble my own cluster of 4 servers, using OSCore. As both Bios and UEFI, load the operating system on a machine after boot, I want to know which one loads an operating faster?

@Hennes I'll give you the first close vote.
I wonder who the F** gives a <censored> about how fast a server board loads.
I'll grant you that it might be important to a netbook, or for a tablet.
But for a server ?
18:57
Too fucking broad, asshole
When RHEL7 gets more widely used, I expect the grumbling about server boot times to increase somewhat. But still, since you really don't boot all the time, not that much.
Aye.
