@MichaelHampton: I primarily have it so that at some point, I can stick AAAA addreesses on resources I need outside and either tether an ipv6 capable phone (alas, starhub dosen't do mobile ipv6) or stick a tunnel on it so I can access stuff.
apparently these number are from the last campaign they ran
Gawd. I can't imagine what you'd have to do to Magento to make it actually serve 250 simultaneous users.
@JourneymanGeek A bit behind the times, eh? I already have several things with AAAA records that point into my home network. And have done for years.
they don't use Varnish, just directly served -- from Apache! Without fpm-php -- mod_php! My god...
@MichaelHampton: I haven't really needed it
@faker You're going to have a fun week!
12:05
@faker: 0_0. I suspect the setup on my phone old mini server is probably somewhat better set up for that
@MichaelHampton I bill them by the hour :D
@JourneymanGeek well, honestly that setup is good enough for their normal traffic
Back about 10 years ago I got my Pentium 166 slashdotted. It mostly held up, sort of.
@MichaelHampton 0_0
That's when I stopped hosting public web sites at home.
2 hours left at $currentemployer ... weird feeling
12:10
@MathiasR.Jessen I hope you are already drinking
3 hours left before awesome work summerparty :)
@MichelZ Beer and pizza in 45 minutes ;)
good boy(s)!
@MathiasR.Jessen when are you moving?
Bob
Bob
...uh oh. Reallocated sectors :(
12:15
@DennisKaarsemaker Sept. 10th, first working day on the 16th :)
always fun to reply to users who have demanded satisfaction from a senior tech support person because their "remote worker" desktop session isn't right and that clearly must be something our helpdesk is doing wrong with "Actually, you were typing in your username incorrectly".
@RobM yeah, users....
@MichaelHampton: I'm pretty sure a pentium 166 was a museum piece 6 years ago.
Today's gem from the spam mailbox:
Subject: The Benefits of Running IBM PowerLinux Solution for SAP
12:23
@JourneymanGeek Oh yes, it was ancient even then. I tossed it in a nearby dumpster not long after that.
@hilmanshini hello
Fuck IBM. Fuck SAP.
@MichaelHampton you really should consider recycling
@JourneymanGeek it was a museum piece 16 years ago..
err anyway how downvote system works?
12:24
@hilmanshini we downvote everything with JAVA in it, yes
@hilmanshini you vote down, you lose rep.
And I mainly need external access for stuff like ttrss (I run that on a VPS). My rtorrent/rutorrent system has ipv6 as well, but that's for hipster seeders, and I'm not sure my rtorrent supports it
@hilmanshini: Yanno, there's this thing called the help page...
wherisdat?
no just asking
Its a great way to download linux livecds nonetheless ;p
oh ok then
so downvoted made from user not systems
ok then .
okies then
@DennisKaarsemaker Yeah, that ;p
okay then
Though I should probably have said 10 years ago. Damned dyslexia.
12:28
and why you downveted anything about java?
@MichelZ
is the java haunted you?
23 hours ago, by Falcon Momot
> The additional security surface java puts into your environment is complex, and it's important not to ignore it or try to simplify it away.

Firstly, there is the horrible record the JRE has for having security bugs. It's hard to point out a specific one, and this is the scary part - the bugs are overwhelmingly unspecified vulnerabilities with unspecified vectors.

When I, as a security consultant, read clauses like "allows a remote attacker" without further qualification as to their meaning, I see that it could very well mean that certain parameters getting into a certain function might
i dont believe that happens
how can that happens with what protocols? RMI?
@hilmanshini java haunts EVERYONE
it feed me everyday
why it haunt?
because java is a lame piece of shit
12:31
yea that can be
javanese
it's full of securty flaws and it's extremly slow
and impossible to properly maintain (on windows)
btw java has an island now
we are talking about the programming language, not the island
haha yea kidding
I guess everyone is aware that there's an island called java
12:33
@MichelZ Isn't that where coffee comes from?
I was under the impression it was named for coffee from there?
Now you're just being silly.
that can't possibly be misinterpreted...
Well, then.
And that is what I think of that.
and eh, the only reason I have java installed is minecraft.
Java is the reason I have never played Minecraft.
12:37
adobe should buy java and then we can nuke them both out of the orbit
The only reason I have java is the iLO remote console.
I should reverse engineer the protocol and write a client in C.
@DennisKaarsemaker add DRAC .. same shit different provider.
I have no dells \o/
not in the dc at least
Isn't there already a standard protocol for that?
user image
4
@MichaelHampton I tried a vnc client, but that didn't work :)
12:52
morning
Oh...there's a standard protocol for serial console, but doesn't seem to be one for a graphical console
@MichaelHampton if I just want text, I can just ssh to it and use textcons
which, tbh, is enough in 99% of cases. I haven't actually used the gui remote console in months
textcons is good
It took me years to realize it replaced remcons

Q: smartctl error end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector

jmleroI have a Scientific Linux 6.5 server with a RAID with SSD disks. I see several error on dmesg file but there is no alert or errors provided by the utilities of the RAID controller (LSI controller). The server is a Supermico D20-4x-M4, connected directly using Infiniband to a storage server with ...

is it just me or are those drives directly connected and not using the raidcontroller
13:04
superuser.com/questions/804666/… <--- is this more SF territory?
@JourneymanGeek I'd say so, yeah
@DennisNolte basically, yes
The server is a Supermico D20-4x-M4, connected directly using Infiniband to a storage server with the SSD RAID. The controller is LSI MegaRaid SAS 9286CV-8e. And the disk are SAMSUNG MZ7WD120.
13:19
@ewwhite so are those devices "behind" the hardware raid or not?
13:41
@ewwhite that's not your fault. It was missing for years.
@DennisKaarsemaker oh, so I wasn't crazy?
@DennisNolte I can't tell. Likely not.
@ewwhite I didn't say that :)
An empty star wall in the comms room? I don't even.
@NathanC empty?
Nevermind...chat was being a butt and didn't load it.
13:43
Press F5
14:11
So my daughter is playing the gundam style music video on repeat
@JourneymanGeek YOU ARE A BAD PERSON AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD
@Basil Burn the mp3 player/computer/whatever it is
@NathanC It is a rather expensive mac ;)
@Basil: Gundam style?
So giant japanese robots fighting music?
14:12
@MichaelHampton Yeah it's all good.
gangnam style?
Uh, yeah, that
ok, I clearly need more coffee
@Basil Gundam style would be pretty cool.
brb
@MikeyB in my defense, that's exactly what it sounds like when they say it
@MikeyB We've been trying to figure out if you really meant Celsius.
14:14
@Basil Weak, but:
@MikeyB oh lord
On second thought, no that doesn't make sense and then I remember that APC's developers are retarded:
The columns don't line up - sorry it got up to 52℃
Hot, but not facemeltingly so?
Yeah. Also: damn we need to change the taps:
Bob
Bob
@MikeyB ...that makes far more sense :P
14:27
@Bob Now that I'm mostly awake... "Oh yeah... that's kind of overly hot."
So, riddle me this:I have two identical APC PDUs and attempted to hook them up to an APC Smart-UPS 6000. I was able to connect one perfectly fine into a 20A socket, but the other one wouldn't fit in either the 20A or 30A plug. Any idea why?
But yet, I have two 20A plugs in the wall for these PDUs and they both fit.
So my new acquaintance at IBM Switzerland thinks that a lack of a formal university education might hurt my chances of finding a job there, should I ever go fishing for one...
but on the plus side, both Netapp and HDS are huge, at least in the accounts he works with
14:44
@NathanC L5-20?
NEMA 5-20?
I mean, it should be very easy to see why the plug doesn't fit.
@ewwhite 5-20 for both. The one that doesn't fit is plugged into a 20 amp
How doesn't it fit?
this should be pretty basic :)
@ewwhite One of the teeth is slightly off...by maybe a quarter inch
bent?
just bend it back
I can't experiment much since the PDU's connected to our core switches :[
@ewwhite Nope. Tried that.
I spent literally 10 minutes trying to get the dang plug to fit, but no dice.
Then I had to plug it back into mains so people could work... :(
14:51
for your Euro, APAC folks, we're talking about...
So what's bent?
o0
It never fails to confuse me that you guys use such puny plugs
Oh, I guess I didn't understand the plug we were talking about, lol. Mine's a twist-lock.
That ^
@NathanC That's an L5-20 (L == locking)
14:54
Sorry, noob at the whole power thing...never usually have to deal with them. :P
@NathanC So the ground on that sets the orientation...
The unmarked slot in the diagram is the one that's off by just a hair
@ewwhite Right. It can only fit one way.
bend it
@ewwhite Can't bend it left or right...it's almost like it wants to be twisted just a little more, but it doesn't work. ha
Take a pic
14:56
@NathanC buy a new cable
:)=
@ewwhite Can't unplug it :( it's a production PDU powering our core network switches
so it doesn't fit, but it's plugged in?
@ewwhite It's plugged into a socket in the wall that's exactly the same thing, and it fits
but it doesn't fit into the plugs on the UPS
Trying to get my pics on google drive so i can show you >.>
flashlight, check debris...
This is the back of our UPS
There's one PDU plugged in...and it works fine.
Isn’t it ironic getting a Java exploit via java.com, the primary source for one of the most common used browser plugins? Current malvertising campaigns are able to do this
hahahaha
@MichelZ Lulz
@NathanC most of those look like L6-20/30 plugs
Get pwned while trying to update!
15:00
208V
So, that?
it's printed on the plugs
Let me see if I can get a good look at them...
the diameter of the prong circle is what's different between 120V and 208V
or give the model of the PDU
AP89xx?
Dan
Dan
What's the obsession with disabling ICMP internally FFS
15:04
@Dan doesn't the windows firewall do it by default?
Bob
Bob
@MichelZ Java is the exploit.
@ewwhite Dunno about Windows, but Norton's firewall sure did.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Dunno
Probably
@ewwhite You were right. One's an L5-20, the other's an L6-20
They're the same model, but they can be configured differently when ordered...so yeah. We inherited the equipment so we had no idea.
We're gonna look at replacing the PDU with one that works or rewiring the room so the UPS can power all the outlets instead.
@Bob it does
Or get an adapter. Depends on what'll be cheaper in the end :p
15:19
@NathanC no adapter option
what model number?
@ewwhite Smart-UPS 6000
@NathanC Of the PDU.
Oh, right...sec
There's a model number... AP79xx
15:39
Would this question be welcomed here?

Q: How do I mitigate IP Fragmentation attacks?

Uncreative NameBackground Transmission Control Protocol is used to order and check errors in packets. It provides a solution for sending a continuous stream of octets, the smallest logical unit in digital information. Fragmentation Attacks Tiny Fragment A unusual fragment size is used for a packet. A TCP sp...

I think there is a real question in there, though it took careful editing to find it.
@Jacob not in the US, no... I have a few in Canada, but that won't help you.
15:54
@ewwhite I don't see one anywhere. The issue is a plug mismatch ...we'll figure out a solution. :P
We can use a standard power strip since all the equipment isn't even pulling 4A total, so it's not a huge deal.
(Obviously it won't be an el-cheapo power strip, but you get the idea)
@TRiG network engineering
16:11
@nathanc L6 and L5 are different voltages. The units are different.
16:22
hello
hello
Hello, Hello
I don't know why you say goodbye; I say hello.
16:58
hello
Is this a long weekend in the US?
yeah
it is?
what's the occasion?
Labor day
17:59
@MichaelHampton You're right. I don't need to partition my ZFS zvols.
18:19
Erm which bit of the error message did the OP not read serverfault.com/questions/625046/… ?
@Iain that's an impressive amount of not reading
@RyJones yah if it's one line lost in amongst lots of others then ... but ...
@Iain I mean, it's right there.
@RyJones having never used mysql, the first thing I'd want to know is what a PID file is - and the man page doesn't mention those at all
I get the impression OP doesn't understand the message
@TomW he's updated it look at Revision 1
18:34
I don't either, tbh.
so it looks like it isn't installed, right?
yum doesn't show it?
@RyJones could have done a source install which would be compatible with /usr/local
@Iain of course you're right. I assumed he was running yum because that's how he normally manages packages.
actually, this is almost certainly on a webhost, right? it shows cpanel in there
@RyJones all bets are off then !
19:23
having drapes installed...
I feel like a grown-up.
@ewwhite curtains ?
@Iain it's like taping cardboard over windows, but they're made of cloth
@RyJones we generally call them curtains I think
so a client of mine apparently booked a campaign which will increase our traffic by approx. 2Gbit/s. I have 5 days to prepare. w. t. f.
@faker I think you're faking
19:26
@faker at least you got notice
@RyJones I wish. I was on the phone with the advertisement company and it seems legit, I still hope they are overestimating
they have one server at Hetzner. Running Magento. On Apache. With mod_php. ffs.
@faker good thing there's a three day weekend in there too
@RyJones not in Europe!
19:55
@ewwhite do you think we can get venture capital to investigate this? :D
"we'll make the cloud faster!"
It's a little dorky
Fuck you chrome fuck you fuck you fuck you
it doesn't prompt with saved passwords on untrusted certs
annoying
@RyJones Going to pax?
@Jacob no sir, you?
20:09
@RyJones Maybe, I doubt it
I'll be driving though it a couple time today, though
Gah - Intermediate upgrades suck...
20:35
@ChrisS Can you tell me about your backup infrastructure/processes?
at $WORK, not $HOME

2 hours later…
22:14

Q: Removing Mdadm raid system and boot with a single disk

user3822093I have a linux system running a RAID 1 (MDADM) system. For virtualisation purpose, i need to remove this system of RAID and then boot again the machine with just the main hard disk. Now.. I am not the one who set-up all that, and i have never worked so far with raid system. I have tried multip...

Hey guys, long time no see
22:44
Here is a tribute to you SysAdmins. Keep up the great work guys.

P.S.: I'm a software engineer. I don't love some groups, which are apparently very helpful to non-techs.
@Farhan You think those are jokes. Unfortunately, they are all drawn from real life.
23:13
@MichaelHampton Not at all sir, I've even heard more jokes. Luckily (for myself) I'm never a subject of any one.
