@cole I gave up on iOS Chrome ages ago due to instability.
@Zoredache I find it vastly superior to Safari on iOS
It was a bit shit years ago
@Zoredache indeed, it's shit on iOS
holy fuck it's startup killer @Wesley
@RyanRies I think you're the only person that remembers or cares about that. And that's including me in the field of possible rememberers and carers.
@DennisKaarsemaker That's MongoDB, Inc, not MongoHQ.
What's the difference?
@MichaelHampton One makes the database and the other hosts it.
No relation.
Other than MongoHQ / Compose currently being on the partner list for MongoDB Inc.
00:13
@Zoredache @cole And using 20 Set-Alias when you could just update your %PATH% seems an awkward way to do things.
morning ladies gentlemen and @Wesley
There's a comma there somewhere but I haven't had enough coffee yet.
@JourneymanGeek Herrow.
I've come to a conclusion that asking why your pc/pc peripheral thinks its a <not pc thing> is a rep magnet.
@MichaelHampton: also, gnome 3 is shit.
However I figure I want to work in a vanilla environment for what I'm doing and understand where exactly the things I hate about centos 7 are, and how to fix them ;p
@JourneymanGeek I've taken a peek at it about once a year or so since it came out, but I've been so unimpressed that I gave up almost immediately.
especially since I have a home server rebuild coming up
00:34
@Wesley So... you're not longer a MONNGGGGGG
This makes me sad inside
@MarkHenderson Nope. What obscene and racist things can we make from Compose?
I'll compose you... uhh... in the butt.
I got nothing.
00:52
Ugh, deleting comment.
@jscott NOOOOO
Link me first.
=P
Too late, sorry.
@jscott I bet you're not. =(
Honest. It would have contributed nothing of value. I have to correct myself when I make such mistakes.
01:29
@jscott I was wondering that with the path vs set-alias thing. I assumed I was just being an idiot thinking it was better to put it in your path.
ARGH
So what the shit do I need to do to centos 7 to make a CLONEABLE IMAGE
this thing's totally fucking different
01:45
WAHSSSSSS!
@JoelESalas Kickstart?
@ScottPack This is on EC2, I guess I just don't understand how udev got glommed into systemd
@cole I suppose it's a preference thing, but I need a lot of those utilities to work in cmd so into the %PATH% things go.
It's just a nice coincidence that Powershell respects %PATH% as well.
You see, when two hipster designed subsystems love each other very much they each ingest fist fulls of Viagra. Then one of them douses the other with ether and fucks it senseless in all the wrong places.
Why are people even using centos7
Are you asking why they're using it so soon after initial release or why at all?
02:12
@ScottPack so soon after release.
@ewwhite To get stuff ready for late adopters?
@ewwhite For projects you know will outlast the support lifetime of EL6
@ewwhite Look on the bright side, 7.1 will probably be out next week.
@JoelESalas What's the problem?
Though...the damn thing was in beta for six months. I had package builds ready to go for EL7 on its release date.
02:37
Hey Lync users - what phones did you deploy? There's too damn many choices I'm trying to narrow the list down before actually inspecting them all
Polycom have like 4 different ranges just on their own
@MarkHenderson we just use a headset
@LucasKauffman Soft phone style?
I love lync 2013 on my iPad, but I also use a USB headset
yes, soft phone.
@MarkHenderson yea soft phone
I think I can get away with about 50% soft phones, but the other 50% either don't have computers or are technologically challenged
Which means buying around 9 phones
Plus two conference stations
02:47
let me see if I can find the desk set phones we use.
well, shit, it's one of the polycom ones, but there's a million of them
Yeahhhhhhh
I'm leaning to the CX-series at the moment, but they are quite a bit more expensive than the lower level phones and I don't really see a massive justification for the price hike apart from a pretty screen (and lets be honest, that's probably all it is)
@RyJones Yeah thats the one
They seem to have a pretty good hold on the Lync desk phone market
It would be tomorrow before I could verify it. The conference system is a little different, I know it's polycom though
That's cool
I'm not too worried about on-device features. Those that actually need that stuff (receptionist) can just do everything with the lync client on the computer
For others it just needs to have a phone book and to work when they pick up the receiver
02:52
yeah
I think we must have a non shipping polycom unit in the conference rooms, it sure as shit isn't the cx8000
03:07
@RyJones I had a peek at their "EagleEye" conference pricing
$20,000 for the hardware
@LucasKauffman No spitting!
@Wesley PFFF PFFF PFFF
I would never spit on you @Wesley
just lick you
@MarkHenderson I suspect our stuff is, honestly, ancient relative to what is currently shipping
@LucasKauffman ♡x ♥o♡x ♥o♡x ♥o♡x ♥o♡x ♥o♡x ♥o
@Wesley Fuck you slut
Fucking making hearts and crosses to someone else
I'm sick and tired of you treating me this way
We're done
Get the fuck out of my chat room
03:10
@MarkHenderson C'mere and motorboat me ( . )Y( . )
Bet you'll feel better!
@MarkHenderson there is plenty of Wesley for everyone
I'm eating Pez right now and I don't know why.
@Wesley I'm strangely aroused right now
@MarkHenderson we could do a threesome
@LucasKauffman A llama and two cats.
That's some major barnyard kink right there.
03:12
@Wesley sounds right we should register that tld
@LucasKauffman onellamatwocats.com
onellamatwocats.xxx
1llama2cats.xxx
Speaking of sexual pervsion, sup @RyanRies?
One of you guys...
@LucasKauffman Wesley already has me registering strange domains for hairbrained projects
@MarkHenderson Oh, interestingly, something happened the other day that made me realize that idea is really in need and I Forgot what it was.
03:13
oh do you need more up votes? I'll run around and vote on all your stuff
"Serial upvoting reversed"
@RyanRies What dipwad doesn't know how to vote people and not trip the reversals?
Maybe @RyJones, maybe @Cole :)
@Wesley: eh, I keep a small notebook for that ;p
I just up voted some stuff at your command @RyanRies so I hope it helps
got like 50 of your answers and 20 questions
03:17
You're gonna get me kicked off of SE, aren't you...
hey just helping another Ry out
heheh
So many times I've @'d @RyanRies when I meant @RyanRies and vice verse.

Uhmm
Wow
That was perfect actually.
I frequently have the same issue
My irony meter just exploded
03:28
@Neutralizer Well, before I went into IT, I was a funk guitarist. No, wait, punk guitarist. Then I did some pitching for the Braves... — Michael Hampton 30 secs ago
@MichaelHampton I don't know what prep things to do to centos 7 to successfully create a bootable AMI. systemd is completely different and I have no idea how to use it
@JoelESalas You shouldn't need to do anything but snapshot it in the desired state, and then make your AMI from the snapshot.
@MichaelHampton I upgraded from centos 6.5 AMI to centos 7
so I think a lot of the cloud magic was lost
and I don't know what they do to their centos 6.5 AMI to make it cloud-worthy
@JoelESalas Oh, messy. Isn't there a CentOS 7 cloud AMI yet?
@MichaelHampton Nope!
03:36
Hm. All that I'm sure you need is cloud-init. Is that installed?
@MichaelHampton I broke this box somehow
@JoelESalas If I were you, at this point I'd just build my own image from scratch
Or if you're feeling really adventurous you can fire up a RHEL 7 image and convert it to CentOS
04:01
or if you're really adventurous: Gentoo
@LucasKauffman Uh....no thanks!
@MichaelHampton LINUX FROM SCRATCH
@LucasKauffman Been there, done that, got over it.
@MichaelHampton ... that's genius
@MichaelHampton I have no idea how to build a new AMI
04:51
@MichaelHampton Converting to CentOS7 was super easy!
05:03
Edmund, if the defective remote is disabled on our system, we normally advice to dispose of the unit. But in this case, the working remote should be enable and the defective unit must be retrieve as there is no way to lock the said unit. Yes, the working remote was mistakenly disabled.

Thank you once again for contacting Logitech Customer Care, have a great day!
@ewwhite Wait what are they telling you to do
and why don't my AMIs work

what the shit
I have Harmony remotes at home...
They're Cloud-based
and I had a defective remote.
I bought a new one to replace, then pursued the warranty process on the old one
and they cloud-disabled my new good remote.
and now they can't reenable it
@ewwhite "have a great day!"
05:09
@ewwhite So are they going to send you a new one?
They did
That seems a big fuckup
I have the new one, too
but the one I WANT to use is blocked from their servers
the replacement they sent will go to another room

And this is why "cloud" can be dangerous.
My television remote shouldn't have anything to do with the cloud!
Bob
Bob
05:12
Nor butt, unless you're into that :P
You bought the device. You hold it physically in your hand. And it can be permanently disabled remotely, just like that.
good morning
@Bob same as an iphone
@MichaelHampton @ewwhite I can't swear in a court of law it's possible to make a bootable AMI off of RHEL7
Bob
Bob
05:30
@Joel yet another reason I'll never get one
@Bob You're one of those people
Are you unironically an Android user
Bob
Bob
At the moment, yes. Not particularly happy with the way it's going, but it's the better option as far as I'm concerned.
05:50
@Bob sure sure, I'm just always amused at the grievances people have with (iphones|android) yet the situation's just as shitty on the (android|iphone) side
@JoelESalas: eh. I've come to the conclusion its like vim and emacs. Now if only someone would make the sublime text of phone OSes ;p
and meh, If I can't do unspeakable things to it, i don't really own it. Remote disabling hardware that dosen't have Personally Identifying Information is slightly silly.

@Wesley Belated birthday wishes

@Iain TY, TY. Things are looking up for this old cat.
Yay.
@Wesley you have a bike ?
@Wesley: If I can't break it, clearly I don't really own it
I walked into the next room and took that photo just for you.
So you could say, I have a bike.
For certain definitions of "bike"
06:05
And yes that room is a wreck.
Most of my hardware starts off like that...
@Wesley those wheels wil be a little rough on the cobbles
@Iain I'm still optimizing. =P
Alright my cuddle bunnies, I'm out for the night.
Stay adorable.

It's raining torrents here. Which is good, because yesterday we could smell the smoke from the forest fire...
@JennyD we can see the pyrocumulus from here; luckily, the fires are on the other side of the state
The fire is about 90 kms to the west of us, but it's large enough to be visible from satellite images. Biggest fire in Sweden in 40 years.

@JennyD Ouch. Everyone get out safely?
07:01
@Bob I've only heard of one casualty so far. The authorities have done their best to evacuate people, but it's a rural area and it's hard to get hold of everyone. I don't think we'll know for sure until well after the emergency.
I've friends who have taken in both people and cattle and other animals from the affected areas. There's a lot of volunteers.

@JennyD it's a cover from Alestorm of the song "Hangover"
@faker I've not heard that one but I do love the Cash version. I got it from an episode of Person of Interest and it really stuck

@dawud Markdown always fails.
It's my last day in $job, and I'll be moving to $job+1 as soon as next Monday.
I'll be having lunch at an argentinian parrilla today, you're all invited to come :)
09:47
@dawud dammit, I just missed the flight to Argentina.
@dawud I'll send my astral body to join you.
@ewwhite I remember when a friend's family had one of the first remotes, a Zenith Space Commander, kinda like the model 400 on this page (but only two buttons)
10:04
@Ward what are you doing up at this time ?
@dawud Enjoy the new job
@DennisKaarsemaker No problem :) next time, then.

Where do employers find these people:

genitally?

I think it's meant to be gently, but spoon plate fight....what on Earth
@Dan the guy should just buy a pair of earplugs.
Dan
Dan
@JennyD I just can't fathom where these people find their issues - I've worked in some huge open plan offices and I can't say I've ever been irritated by the sounds of cutlery
10:47
@Dan The most irritation I had was with the coworker who would make sudden clucking noises like a chicken when the fancy took him.
2
Dan
Dan
@JennyD That's peculiar!
@Dan Also vastly irritating.
Dan
Dan
I think irritating individuals are probably quite common
There was a lady a few jobs ago who was just SO DAMN LOUD. And ALL OF THE TIME
It felt like everybody was on the phone with her!
@Dan Yes, but openplan offices make it worse because they affect more people at once
Whee home already (after 3 hours of work)
10:50
I should go get some lunch.
With a fresh raspberry pie (model b plus)
Dan
Dan
@JennyD True, though I quite like open plan all in all
old post, but interesting nonetheless: computerworld.com/s/article/print/9137708/…

@Hennes: Lovely machines, especially since it really looks like they took most of the complaints about it to heart.
Oh yes! HTTPS is now a Google ranking signal! (googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.de/2014/08/…)
that could finally convince people/my bosses to make it available
@Dan It's certainly possible to build good open plan offices that make it easy both to collaborate and to work singly without too much noise. I just haven't ever seen it.
Dan

11:48
That's a lot of internet
Surprised it still works, to be honest
@Bob Oh noes!
(at least they said data and not datas)
@Dan: as long as no one presses the button
Hello friends
12:07
@cole hey
@JourneymanGeek Next step. A PSU for it (what I had is up to 750Ma, and model B+ needs 1500-2000MA)
@JennyD hey! how's it going? :)
@cole I'm back at work after vacation. I wish I weren't...
not that anything is particularly horrible, I just really enjoyed the time off
12:10
@Hennes: oh, for the extra USB ports?
Possibly.
I just stuck my model B on a hub and vice versa
Right now there are six people within 3 meter from me, loudly discussing how they're going to organize their betting on horses and lotto and stuff
@JennyD :(
This is one of the reasons I don't like open offices.
12:11
I can't do open offices.
I keep getting recruiters being like "Oh it's a hip-startup like environment with open offices!"
And then I'm like "yeah no thanks". They're usually confused.
I've actually told my pimps that I want a new gig next year because I don't like the environment here
@JennyD that made me chuckle haha.
@cole well, they need to do something if they're going to take a cut of my pay :-)
@JennyD I hear that!
12:14
@cole: what the heck do they mean 'startup-like'? ;p
Either it is, or it isn't
Dan
Dan
@JennyD You mean new gig within the consultancy you work for?
@JourneymanGeek I think people use it as an antonym to corporate now
yeah, flat structures, free coffee/meals and stuff like that
Yeah that @MichelZ
ahh
(and eh, last job was... 4 people and a dog. I seem to still be working for the dog.)
12:18
better than working for corporate assholes, I guess
:D
meh
Pay was terrible.
Perks were alright, I guess
Wouldn't have minded a slightly bigger budget
@Dan Yes, exactly.
@JourneymanGeek They mean "without any of the organizational stability that comes from having people around who know how to do anything other than coding".
"Oh, we don't need HR; everyone is friends here!" Which is great until the boss decides they're not friends with you.
@JennyD: ._.
12:22
who needs structure if you can code!!!
@JennyD: that's not just coders though ;p
@JourneymanGeek True.
Looking for Microsoft people...
Customer is asking how much it would cost to migrate their Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003 to Windows 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013.
I told them to just "give me money"... but they want something more specific.
@ewwhite "give me LOTS OF money"?
Maybe "LOTS" is the key.
12:27
@ewwhite just say give me 20$ per user
but I really don't know what I'll find...
@ewwhite It usually is, with licensing.
this is the site whose local IT consultant deleted their DNS zone a few weeks back.
"no, we don't have any domain controller backups..."
@ewwhite Ouch.
"Why would we need that? We have two domain controllers"
12:29
@ewwhite Did they understand after this event?
/yawn
@ewwhite oh god, that's terrifying.
@JennyD not quite... he's still missing some major gaps in Windows knowledge. And DNS, and how the internet works...
like the person who was a competent IT person in 2001...
but never progressed
@ewwhite And this is someone who was actually paid to manage their systems? sigh
I recreated the DNS zone by hand from host files, reverse PTR records, entries in my monitoring software, etc. But yeah, bad mistake.
AD replicates mistakes just as fast as anything else.
12:32
@ewwhite I got to go on an emergency call to one of our customers who'd managed to break their DNSSec signing setup. At least their DNS worked for everyone who wasn't using DNSSEC, while we fixed it.
@JennyD I noticed DNSSEC recently. Is it in wide-use now?
@ewwhite It's getting there. I don't have the figures.
The main home ISP in Sweden does it, so when this happened nobody that was on a Telia connection was able to do any work from home...
13:13
