Github... they removed the download section a while ago, but I think they've added "releases", which does effectively the same thing
meh, thay shat over themselves first
Bob
Bob
between the two, they actually recommended SF for hosting downloads
I like how they updated it :P
@Bob Most of the stuff I get from Github I only wanted the source code anyway
But I didn't realise you couldn't put unversioned binaries up any more
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson You can add binaries again, but they're now sorta-versioned. Not part of the main repo, but they do track tags.
@MarkHenderson Who the hell still uses sourceforge?
00:59
@MichaelHampton Filezilla, apparently
@MarkHenderson And who the hell still uses Filezilla? :)
@MichaelHampton You have a better alternative?
Besides ftp.exe
@MarkHenderson Oh, right, you're using Windows. I forgot.
@MarkHenderson: cyberduck
;p
Bob
Bob
01:25
@MichaelHampton Heck, I'd take FileZilla on Linux, when I want a GUI.
@Bob: there's probably better alternatives

@JourneymanGeek Such as?
@Braiam Help me herp while I derp
@MarkHenderson yep, that's happened to me w/ some CNet installer I used the other day
01:37
@Braiam I put it out of our misery
@MichaelHampton Filezilla on Windows here, but I used to d/l it from their website
Am I the last person on earth who uses the command line?
@Bob: well I don't use ftp at all, but most file managers still use it
@MichaelHampton For FTP? Yes
No TLS when you do that shit by hand
@MarkHenderson I don't do FTP at all. Ever. SFTP, sure..
01:38
@MichaelHampton: I tend to favour sftp while if that's an option
(and its usually an option)
But I use the command line for that!
@MichaelHampton Hear, hear
You wouldn't use filezilla then!
@MichaelHampton So you're sitting there with curl quickly typing responses into queries?
@MarkHenderson Uh...no
01:40
@MarkHenderson scripts helpers count as command line... no?
@Braiam: sure.
No, seriously, it's quite rare that I would manage files with any sort of GUI. Unless forced to.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelHampton FTP command lines are... bleh.
02:05
sshfs and cp -r. Better yet rsync. Done.
02:46
oh boy. I just got an IM from one of my cousins of I have any idea on how to force a quota on internet usage. Suggested untangle (eh, no mention of budget) but it looks like they got rid of their old rerouter functionality in the new version
dumping features suck :/

@Bob Free
And yours pretty much lines up with me
At least put in the effort to proof read
04:42
@MarkHenderson Yeah, sourceforge and their installers... horrible!

1 hour later…
05:44
Morning
there, sent the last assignment in my stupid course
I wonder if I should start drafting my grade appeal, or my complaint to the dean, first?
06:09
ugh, I'd like to be really drunk, but I don't want to be hung over for my meeting in 12 hours
and then I have to get packing for my flight to seattle
06:47
morning
07:06
@FalconMomot: 0_0
@JourneymanGeek ya?
や?
@FalconMomot: for the assignment you just sent in?
はい!
ですですですです
it was supremely unclear what was being assessed
since the rubric wasn't complete
First day at job after vacation. I managed to remember my passcard, the code for it, the password for the network... but I left my headphones at home. I won't get much done today given the noise level in this plae.
lol
@JennyD: this is why I have a pair of earbuds around in my manpurse.
07:15
@JourneymanGeek I usually keep a pair in my purse, but I've been using them at home and forgot to put them back.
ahh
my home pair is immobile for now
@JennyD my strategy is one of two things... yell at the person making noise, or break into their computer and make it stop making noise.
07:29
@FalconMomot Both of those things might be a good way to get this contract cancelled prematurely :-)
I'll head out and get a cheap pair on my lunch break later.
good morning everyone.
07:58
@DennisNolte "good morning" is contradictory.
@DennisNolte No
@FalconMomot bah
Until now the day (for a monday) ,at least for me, is quite good.
And as soon the "morning" will be over, i'm quite positive it will stay that way.
@JennyD Be a devil! Do the wrong thing!
@DennisNolte there is a dark stain upon the world this day. It looks like it's java soiling the earth.
@FalconMomot java is always a constant thread, same as all the other shit going on, so this does not count for a specific bad monday!
@FalconMomot I'm going to go get those Bose noise cancelling headphones that I've been thinking of for a while. I'll take this mornings irritation as a sign.
08:09
:)
I wonder how many years the person who decided to commercialize java will spend in purgatory?
@JennyD These are the worst kind of Mondays
@Iain Exactly so.
@MathiasR.Jessen No! morning doesn't exist. this night will last forever. lays in bed
But now I have a pair of Bose QC20i which hopefully will help me retain both my job and my freedom.
08:50
@FalconMomot I used to say that every night, but I've been proven wrong consistently :(
@JennyD In-ears with active noise cancellation - does it work ?
if I were to not travel so frequently, I think I'd keep a frog.
for ingress reasons.
@MathiasR.Jessen Not quite as well as the ones that cover the ears, but they do a decent job of noise reduction. I've wanted them for use outside of the office for a while anyway, so this seemed like a good time to see how they work in-office.
@JennyD Sounds quite nice actually, I've tried the closed ones, gets a bit claustrophobic
@MathiasR.Jessen I just turned them on without music in them. They give me a kind of white noise and reduce the volume of the people talking around me. Very restful indeed.
And with music in them they work even better. Still not as good as closed ones, but OTOH it is probably better when in the office that I can hear when people speak to me.
09:24
Just back from a week off, slaying the email mountain :(
Bob
Bob
@Chopper3 No Ctrl+A, Del? :(
@Bob sadly not
@MathiasR.Jessen: ANR works a lot better for things like plane noises
but I've had earbuds that did decent passive isolation for not much (though, I still prefer my cans in every possible way)
@JourneymanGeek I would imagine. A former colleague of mine bought a pair of Bose closed ANR headphones just before his last trip to the States and reported back that he for the first time ever was able to take a nap during a flight :-D
(actually a good chunk of them are tuned for those)
though in theory, there's models that are designed for gunfire, but it would be a VERY wierd office where you'd need one of those.
09:40
@JourneymanGeek I work with a lot of public sector IT departments, don't underestimate the psychosocial effects of New Public Management ;-)

Q: ethernet switch makes network down

M RamezaniI have a D-Link 8-port Ethernet switch which was perfectly working. Since 2 days ago it makes the entire network down. The problem is when I disconnect the cables it runs again and after I connect "the last cable" it goes down again. No matter which cable is the last one, it becomes unstable and ...

I think answering that with "I've found the problem: D-Link" should be perfectly valid.

Hi All, a while back you helped me out with a horrible issue: serverfault.com/q/615130/118470
Unfortunately the investigation was removed from my "domain" so I don't know what happened in the end... All I heard was a "user initiated disk wipe" but fuck it I threw together a lessons learned for the question in case anyone else hits something like that. But wanted to say thanks again :) @Dan @JennyD @pauska @Colyn1337

Q: Domain mapping feature to web app path

AbsI would like to allow users to map their domain to my web app. I would like theirdomain.com to map to myapp.com/username. I am unsure how to go about this as it is quite difficult to search for this on the web. The solutions I have found so far seem to be far mapping to subdomains only. But I w...

qoute: as it is quite difficult to search for this on the web...
ye sure..
@DennisNolte VTC, "minimal effort"...
@JennyD ah minimal, ye , that would be better.
@DennisNolte or maybe it's "minimal understanding". In both cases he failed.
12:34
@JennyD yep :)
well, its an XY problem aswell
@DennisNolte Yep
why the fuck are they arguing
in the time i would write a question on SF i mostly have searched and found the answer..
not even thinking about formating or having spellchecked, added enough info etc.

I was writing some long, complicated Powershell scripts recently, and complicated scripts call for plenty of tracing/debug logging.  These scripts were to be run as scheduled tasks, and it was important that I saved this debug logging information to a file, so I figured that instead of re-inventing the wheel, I'd just use Start-Transcript in conjunction with Write-* cmdlets

so many devs these days..
makes me believe i actually have to do contract work at some point..
Bah.
fixing other peoples stuff, ye right, feels like beeing a plumber..
You're approaching this so wrong I don't even know where to start. So, I'm just going to say "no." No, this is not how you make a disaster recovery plan. No, you do not restore a domain controller by dumping a system state restore onto a similar machine you just built. No, you cannot do a proper disaster recovery with off site system-state backups of your domain controller as your "only option." No, ServerFault is not a place to come to get thousands of dollars in free consulting services. — HopelessN00b 26 secs ago
@DennisNolte I don't know if it's developers or just morons, but either way, eff that shit.
14:06
@HopelessN00b i would not go so far as to say that they are morons, i cannot believe that 90%+ of the people in nearly every area are so stupid that one find it strange how they are able to reproduce or feed themselve.
i can understand that they have an aversion against tech stuff, but comeone, they all use TVs, have smartphones, and watch youtube crap..
14:37
Are the SCCM experts in the channel today?
14:53
@jscott Not really, but ehh, fire away! :D
@MarkHenderson for any stuff like that, I use Ninite now. Easy, no bullshit, and no spam/malware.
@MathiasR.Jessen We're looking to migrate (VMware can't consolidate/unregister/etc the VM) our SCCM 2012 install from Server 2008R2 to 2012R2. Is there a definitive migration guide? Backup/restore docs? Anything to assist, that wouldn't mean rebuilding from scratch or re-deploying the agent to 4.5K clients.
I'm also looking at SCCM today - there's not that much stuff on the MS site about doing installs.
@ewwhite What alignment and consistency do you gain? It looks to me like a completely pointless layer of abstraction that offers no benefits at all.
@jscott I don't think so, but from scouring the webs, it seems that you need to backup the current install (DB + files) and then restore them to a new server with the exact same hostname and drive structure
15:03
@MichaelHampton I like having partitions on my Linux block devices. The only exceptions are weirdo or specialized equipment where it's advised not to...
Disk /dev/fioa: 1205.0 GB, 1205000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 146499 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 32768 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
But there's also an impact on monitoring, too... again, things that suit my needs.
Which reminds me...does the iSCSI sharing work yet?
I don't use iSCSI much. I'll assume it does, as Zetavault and QuantaStor both use it.
QuantaStore tuned their NFS stack and replaced the iSCSI target implementation in their Ubuntu variant.
@jscott Ewww, good luck. SCCM 2012 is positively a nightmare to install/migrate/look-sideways-at.
@MathiasR.Jessen Sure, I get that, sounds so simple. :) I'd love an [semi] official doc signing off on that procedure. I don't want jump in and end up with a non-working rebuild.
Or confirmation from anyone who's "been there" and succeed.
Well, I can tell you that upgrading the OS that SCCM is running on is not supported, so you have build new and do a restore... dunno if that's helpful or not.
15:09
Oh gosh no, I have no intention of an in-place upgrade. This VM is b0rked and I can't even unregister it from the host.
Thanks for the confirmation that it's unsupported though. I will use that to thoroughly discourage anyone here that suggests it. :)
@jscott Well, just don't upgrade to SCCM 2012 R2. Or it will be supported. :)
Have you seen this, by the way? Looks like a reasonably official page on how to do what you want, how you want to do it.
@HopelessN00b I have not seen that. Thanks.
No prob.
So starting today - I'm pretty much on call 24x7.
hmm, with call-id-spoofing and paysafecard PINs 600k€ "earned".. why do the guys who use the idiocy of the others allways get the money?
15:15
@cole :( Any good news on the finding a less sucky job front?
@HopelessN00b nah
It's alright - I thankfully only got two calls really this past week when I was first on call
@cole does it at least got a good pay increase? otherwise the phone is just suddenly off when someone calls :)
@DennisNolte no.
It's part of my job.
@DennisNolte I've tried that before. It went over... not well.
Normally we have a rotation - one guy's last day was Friday - and the other (completely useless) is on vaca this week (he was supposed to be first on call)
15:16
@HopelessN00b well, i usually dont care if i am on call or not, if they are lucky, im not drunk or stoned, if not, fuck them, its my time..
@DennisNolte Yeah, not an option I've had anywhere I've worked.
@HopelessN00b well, come to germany, the rules here are better :)
@DennisNolte I don't speak German. And I like my guns too much to move to most places in Europe.
@HopelessN00b with enough guns you can move to every place in europe..
same as the german did..

Dan
@HopelessN00b Kind of - it's a fixed price project
@Dan All good, so long as the copy-pasta takes you 10 hours.
@Dan Yeah, then copy-pasta email is all they get.
@Dan just do 2-3 pages, print why the 2 options are not available (lack of features etc) , print why the 3rd is crap (do not mention that they said so!) and vote the 4th like it is the best thing ever invented.
most likely it is for their upper management to justify getting this and not another options, but not having the skill to tell why.
and upper management did ask why :)
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte no, the two options aren't available cos they can't ship in time for the project - so the client dropped them
In other words - client said "Which of these four should I buy" and then said "Actually, we don't want these 3"
well if the client is gov or education this is the usual corrupt crap which might get a good product, not the cheapest one..

@HopelessN00b :(

@cole Heh. BillMeLater raised my line to $2250...
Not that I'm using it since Discover's raping me with interest as it is

Q: Get rid of the ubuntu thing that suggests what packages you should install

mortabisI'm finding myself in the unfortunate place of using Ubuntu as a server OS and its tendency to suggest what packages I should install and how to install them when a program I enter in the shell isn't present is downright infuriating. How do I get rid of this "feature?" Thanks.

He seems to be enraged purely on principle?
Guessing he'd rather it be gentoo, heh
I'll take CentOS for $100, Alex.
@MichaelHampton Packages at all are a crutch, though! ;)
Sigh - today is a sad day.

@MichaelHampton Ooh, that looks awesome. Similar to the ZFS snapshotting on updates stuff that one of those solaris-y OSes had?
@ShaneMadden Sort of but not quite? I think it currently uses btrfs.
@cole Congrats on your promotion! It's not many that can claim the title of "Domino Administrator".
@MichaelHampton Ahh, nice
Snapshot, clone, install to clone, boot with clone as root filesystem
16:41
@MichaelHampton I like it.
@jscott fml
@cole Oh I'm so sorry. Your therapy bills are going to get a lot higher.
It burns.
This makes me really question my life.
Are you fluent in LotusScript perchance?
and where it's heading.
@jscott nope.
Is that what it's called?
I was told there was no really scripting for Domino
Cause I asked why we don't automate the creation of Notes IDs and stuff
16:48
I didn't do development in it, but I'd wager there certainly is.
"The following methods create a new ID: <...>. These methods create an ID file and optionally create a record for the ID in the Domino Directory..."
Well I'll be damned.
Maybe now is the time for you to go down the rabbit hole and develop a Powershell module interface for Domino. :)
I don't know Powershell well enough
or development
or care to.
ha, well ok.
I forgot about the handy notes I leave to myself in my time-billing program.
16:54
That moment when I've been in the bathroom long enough for the sensor to shut off the lights...
@ewwhite LOL
@NathanC happens to me often.
@NathanC hopefully not because of butt-pee.
@ewwhite Stomach was angry. Stomach is now content.
butt-pee is the worst.
I wish I could learn to develop Powershell modules and stuff
For some reason my stomach doesn't like it when I eat healthy, lol
16:58
I can barely make my few line scripts to work well.
@NathanC do you often eat like shit?
But it'll get used to it...>.>
@cole Indeed. Not complete shit (junk food and stuff) ...just not the most healthy meals i could be
Yeah when I went full paleo last year - my body was like "OHWATUDOIN"
because well, anything healthy is expensive :(
@NathanC not if you cook it yourself. I mean, it's not $1 ramen packages but yeah
@cole Well true. But even stuff like veggies and healthier meats (chicken/fish) is
