@cole you out in Issaquah now?
I am
you gonna go run around the trails out there? visit Lake Samm?
it's wonderful weather... for once
Going hiking probably this weekend.
good plan
I was down near the Space Needle and stuff today
Went to the EMP Museum
Now I'm looking at apartments on PadMapper in the area :P
00:07
yeah, you did a circle around my current employer
I sold one of the items in the EMP exhibit to the EMP collection.
I'm going to have PSD next week.
Really? That's awesome.
(PSD=Post-Seattle Depression)
It's in the collection, but I don't know if it's displayed.
There's an electromagnetic pulse museum???
Oh that's awesome! I didn't see it but maybe I missed it.
like I said, I don't know if it's on display.
00:18
Hey guys! I'm in desperate need of help
Just setup a fresh CentOS VPS (6.5) with LAMP and now when I try to enter the page I timeout
When index.php is just echoing 123 it totally works
but when I start adding other functions in the page it times out (session_start(), include() etc)
2
this is not the place for that.
@ShaneMadden: widely re-tweeted picture that
@ShaneMadden - so from here it looks like you guys are having fun. But I bet it's not.
@jscott wins for displaying maturity and just editing OPs question instead of making fun of OP like the rest of us
00:40
@RyanRies Link?
@RyanRies Thanks for noticing. Just doing [trying to do?] what I think helps SF in a general sense... Had I more than only one beer so far, I may just "noped" and passed on that question.
In particular the whole "And what he'll be missing out on by staying at a forest and domain functional level of 2003 as opposed to upgrading FFL/DFL to 2012 R2" portion of the question could garner a detailed, valuable answer.
@cole shoot me an email or a DM on twitter if you want to grab lunch downtown this week, or whatever. I'm probably booked for the weekend.
@RyJones will do! I think @Magellan wanted to do something Monday if you're down
@cole fine by me, eastside or Seattle?
I ask because I'm in Seattle during the day and Eastside in the evening
and, you know, traffic
@RyJones I'm thinking probably Seattle since @Magellan works at 3PM.
00:53
@cole sounds good. I suggest the bar downstairs, since @Magellan knows where it is and it's downstairs.
lol alright
and you can park under the building
@DennisKaarsemaker ate there once, he can give an honest review
the music is, sadly, loud all day
Ok cool
if you want to go somewhere else, I have wheels, I don't know what his situation is
I'll go wherever - def have to check with him
00:56
@RyJones I know he atleast has a motorcycle
@Jacob yeah, I just don't know what his situation is with hours and traffic and stuff
I eat here a lot: bethscafe.com but it's up by green lake, and I'd want to go either early or late
Our Famous 12-egg omelette, and "all you can eat" hash browns won't leave you hungry.
@RyJones wtf
Seems "all you can eat" hash browns as a side dish for a 6-12 egg omelette must not earn many takers on second/third helpings.
How are you not all dead of heart disease
@MarkHenderson my gigabit ethernet at home keeps me alive?
01:02
hi
For $1.50 you can share with another person, so a 6 egg would probably work great for me and another friend.
I can barely eat a 3-egg omelet and hash browns. WTF?
But man, country fried steak, that stuff is so damn good.
@RyJones Yeah but whats the contention ratio on that connection?
Gigabit is great if you have a 40gb connection in the basement
@MarkHenderson I actually only have comcast. From what I hear, condo internet is fucking wonderful. nobody uses it.
01:07
That's one of the reasons why I can finally get cheap high-speed internet in our office. 1:1 contention was crazy expensive (we're talking $8,000/mbit/month. No joke), so a new provider started running a 2:1 contended VHDSL service that terminates at fibre in the basement
FTTD (desk!)
@RyJones Do tey even sell wall-plates with fibre terminations?
They do!
Not a standard form factor (for AU anyway)
@MarkHenderson: shouldn't entirely matter as long as you have a box of the right size, no?
(can't remember what they're called)
the ones the fiber optic network here uses looks like this 4.bp.blogspot.com/-z04LkCi6vnk/TuCFEOAtYXI/AAAAAAAAGPs/…
@JourneymanGeek Unless you're working in the miltary with a top secret classified workstation, it doesn't matter full stop
Honestly who runs fibre to the desk?
01:16
I can get 10Gb over short CAT6A runs
I can neither confirm nor deny that what the military uses.
@JourneymanGeek I can
I had to go through the certification procedures
(For one thing, I haven't actually been in an office, on duty, over a decade. It was junk then)
We weren't going for top secret, but the document we received had all the specs for all the levels anyway
01:48
@MagnusBurton my rates are reasonable, feel free to email me.
Hungry Bitches, unofficially nicknamed for its trailer as 2 Girls 1 Cup, is a 2007 scat-fetish pornographic film produced by MFX Media. The film features two women conducting themselves in fetishistic intimate relations, including defecating into a cup, taking turns in what appears to be consuming the excrement, and vomiting it into each other's mouths. "Lovers Theme" by Hervé Roy, from the film Delusions of Grandeur, plays throughouts the trailer. This one-minute preview is a viral video that became a well-known shock video in itself, and for the reactions its graphic content elicited ...
what the heck are people into.
@BigHomie You only just learned about this?
@MarkHenderson yeh man, I don't frequent that, or inert YouTube reaction videos, at least when I can help it.
@BigHomie I have not seen it. Nor do I wish to see it.
But I heard allll about it
and definitely not curious enough to watch it.
@MarkHenderson It's not even the story that got me, I've heard a lot of things, and came across some foul stuff on the net. What got me was reading the wiki and readin about Wyclef's reaction to watching the video. I should say lack of reaction.
sfw; Dude eats corn on the cob while watchin the trailer
02:04
@BigHomie iPod Nano? Why?
@jscott I've been trying to figure that out, must be some onebox code for potentially dirty images, I'm not going to go onebox'ing stuff to find out though....
@jscott Maybe I'll ask on meta.SE.....
> I onebox'd the wikipedia for 2 Girls 1 Cup (See Trailer Here) and it autoresolved the front cover image to an iPod nano. Why?
@BigHomie Ha, maybe. I'd go look in the article's history, but you know I don't want to be the editor that corrects that article.
Found it...
that was quick
Check the "2000s Portal" icon. At the very bottom, right.
@jscott but why that picture
02:11
Not sure why OneBox picks that, but there it is.
@jscott I'll tell you what though, a coworker played this in the office last year, and I have to admit, that was a new one for me.
sfw non-goatse non 2G1C
what got me was when the little guy came up and snatched some, and how stringy it was.
eh. wierd how when you get new gear, you end up needing newer gear
thinks he wants/needs another consumer grade switch
Honestly, if this shuts down, I'm more likely to invest energy in some other embedded site rather than supporting another Area51 reboot. Maybe reddit.com/r/embedded, in many ways it isn't as nice as an SO site, but at least it wouldn't get shut down. — Digikata yesterday
Ouch. That has to be a blow to the SE ego. He'd rather go to /r/embedded than try and resurrect an embedded site here.
@BigHomie I'd not seen that one. But having lived with many different dogs for my entire life I am completely surprised they didn't fight for the left overs.
I can't say I blame him though, it's been a long road trying to float embedded .SE
02:21
@BigHomie Must need to be a beta member to see that link.
@jscott yeah. The short of it is they want to shutdown the site this Monday, for low questions asked
Not for quality of questions, just low question count, which is climbing. It's only been 2 weeks.
@BigHomie Well, best of luck, Area51 is weird. The Homebrewing [beer] SE has been beta for like, almost four years.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah it can be a domino effect
@jscott Multiple people are signing up from all over the SE network that are just finding out about the site, even from Arduino and RPi
thnx, we'll see what happens. I'm not sure I have the energy either.
@BigHomie Why is embedded so different from electronics.se?
How do I read a rotary encoder? How can I generate a random number? Questions about GPIO. All sounds like electronics.se stuff
02:27
@MarkHenderson Welp, they don't want to hear anything about software over there (analogous to sticking fingers in ears). They've also described themselves as 'The theory of EE, not actual practice', so there's that. EE is like Peanut Butter, SO like Jelly, Embedded is the sandwich
@MarkHenderson Also this gem
@BigHomie I've never understood that analogy. For starters, it's jam, not jelly. Secondly peanut butter is disgusting. Thirdly why on earth would you smoosh the two together?!
@MarkHenderson It's an American thing.
;)
@BigHomie Yah clearly :p
You Muricans are so weird
@MarkHenderson And we have actual jelly here
don't ask me the difference b/c idk!
The most murican thing I can think of is a bald eagle carrying an assault rifle inside a PBJ sandwhich whilst yelling FREE SPEECH
02:30
I don't care for jam/jelly/preserves but Real peanut butter ftw, none of this sugar packed crap.
@BigHomie Wha.. how is that jelly? How do you get it out of the jar?
@MarkHenderson but really, there would be no SO if it weren't for embedded programming. There, I said it.
Obviously what you guys call jelly is totally different to what we have here
nah, we've got jam too, by the same company even.
@MarkHenderson lol with a butterknife.
This is jelly:
02:32
@jscott yep, I've been doing the natural pb for a while now, have grown to like the gritty taste.
PSA: Australians call Jello Jelly.
Jell-O(tm), yup, gelatin, which I expected. Jelly here is close, but it's mostly pectin instead of gelatin.
@BigHomie The rest of the world calls it jelly
@MarkHenderson But why ??
Makes sense, we use Imperial units.
@BigHomie because jello is trademark
Also: not sold here AFAIK
Our Jelly is Aeroplane Jelly!
@MarkHenderson Don't worry, you're not missing anything. No one should eat Jell-O.
02:35
yeah, but nobody says go make me a photocopy of these 10 documents, they say I'm about to Xerox this
@BigHomie No... they don't
They say "Hey Jane. Get me 10 photocopies of this please"
they... don't?
I've only ever heard the phrase Xerox used as a copy from Americans
one old lady used to call it a Photostat (hello 1940)
@MarkHenderson So you use no trademark names to refer to everyday items?
@BigHomie I wouldn't say that
02:36
well there ya go
British people refer to "hoovers" whereas we refer to a "vacuum cleaner"
yeah I've heard that once or twice
But our use of trademarks as generic descriptons is pretty low
Then take the test.
The following three lists of generic and genericized trademarks are: * marks which were originally legally protected trademarks, but have been genericized and have lost their legal status due to becoming generic terms, * marks which have been abandoned and are now generic terms * marks which are still legally protected as trademarks, at least in some jurisdictions List of former trademarks that have been genericized The following list contains marks which were originally legally protected trademarks, but which have subsequently lost legal protection as trademarks by becoming the common na...
Tell me @MarkHenderson, do you wrap your packages in inflated cushioning, or Bubble Wrap??
:p
I haven't heard "Xerox" used for "copy" in years.
02:40
@BigHomie First list, guilty of all except: Mimeograph, Primal Therapy, Sellotape, Spidola
@MichaelHampton Me neither, and I worked there.
@MichaelHampton yes yes that was a shoot from the hip example, but it proved a point
@MarkHenderson Bubbler is supposed to be big there instead of Drinking Fountain?
I'm just annoyed that I can't buy Vegemite anywhere in town anymore.
@BigHomie Second list, only guilty of: Adrenalin, Band-Aid, Bobcat, Bubble Wrap, ChapStick, Crock-Pot, Dumpster, Esky, Hills Hoist, Hacky Sack, Hula hoop, Memory Stick, Onesies, Rollerblade, Targa top, Tupperware
Or Kinder Surprise (for the kids).
02:42
@MarkHenderson that's a lot
@BigHomie Not compared to the size of the list
I would have guessed DTMF was a trademark over touch-tone.
@MarkHenderson true, we got big ones like Sharpie, Scotch Tape, etc.
Vaseline
@MichaelHampton I bought a 500g jar yesterday cos our other 500g jar is almost empty
Lasts us about 3 months
Wite-out, Zamboni
These look awesome
02:47
@BigHomie Fuck yes
Although normal orange slices are just as good
@MarkHenderson The only store in town that sold it closed a year ago. I'm out. The closest place I know of which carries it is 100km away in Boston.
I'm guessing they drill a hole in the top, pour molten jelly in, then put em in the fridge and dice like normal
@MichaelHampton If I ever come to the US I will bring a box of timtams and a box of vegemite
@MichaelHampton Y U No Amazon ?
@RyJones Heh, which one?
It's been fun, I'll leave you all with the 7 year old and her death stare.
02:55
@BigHomie BECUASE A 600G JAR IS 33 BUCKS!
That's about $5 here
And I even thought that $5 was a ripoff
@MarkHenderson Fees ;)
@BigHomie NOW YOU KNOW HOW WE FEEL WHEN WE BUY ANYTHING
2
@MarkHenderson Good point, but it's probably cheaper than flying there and buying a bunch then flying back.
Quicker too: Amazon Prime 2 day shipping.
@BigHomie ... why would you go back?
I cwydt
02:58
@BigHomie So google does not shed any light on what you just said
The answer is because: internet.
@MarkHenderson remind me to add that to the urban dictionary. C What You/Ya Did There
@BigHomie "I See What You Did There"
ISWYDT
@MarkHenderson that's stupid and goes against internet rules.
@BigHomie The internet is stupid
@MarkHenderson I know. It's cheaper for me to have someone in Australia post it.
@MichaelHampton Well if you ever want some, let me know and I'll send you some at cost price. I already have @wesley sending me stuff all the time.
How in the world can a company get away with charging it's supplier to forward data to its users
03:24
@BigHomie: the ISPs in US need a good paddle in the ass with a cast iron wifflebat.
alas, no, they just get whatever the hell they want cause the organisation that regulates them is too rotten and stupid to do what needs to be done.
I wish I had started a telco in like 1920
Too many big players to bother starting anything except a local micro-isp these days
@MarkHenderson: micro ISPs would kinda make sense in the US markets. The biggies snarl em up with law suits
@JourneymanGeek There's a few micro-isps here, but most of them get gobbled up by the large players once they get a few thousand subscribers
The ISP we are switching to at work is so micro they only have two employees
@MarkHenderson: There's three big ones, 2 smaller ones (one of which I was tempted by) here
in theory you could start a micro isp as a reseller for fibre here, since the network is reasonably open access
@JourneymanGeek I would do that. I'd buy wholesale fibre and install dslams in basemenets
03:37
@MarkHenderson: we don't have basements ;p
I don't know how your internets are normally disseminated there, but here 99.9% of dslams are in the exchanges, which are often several K's from your home
@JourneymanGeek Your apartment building would
I would only target apartment buildings
Not individual homes
@JourneymanGeek Seriously? Well they must have some sort of demarcation point and a services room
@MarkHenderson: I THINK they have a few big centralised places. The infrascture is already there, and built by quasi government bodies
You said you're on the 25th floor? I would ahve thought that a building that high (or higher even) would have some serious maintenance rooms
03:38
>_>
no?
we have two or three little ones about the size of a toilet
There must be a single point where everyones phone lines come into the building
That's where you want your dslam to be. Then you patch into the copper running up the building to each individual phone line
Then you can offer DSL services that don't terminate 4,000 meters away
There's a small box every floor, actually 2. Those lead back to the room where they have the electical and camera stuff I guess. Then they have all that leading to a few large central places for fiber.
essentially all the fiber optic providers share a network, and in theory I can have multiple providers on one ONT
So they might be multiplexing from each floor
I haven't seen a POTS system like that
03:42
this isn't POTS, this is fiber
OH!
Hence my confuzzlement
we have a POTS box too, but thats 30 years old
Your building is saturated with fibre?
Lucky you
we also have a cable internet/TV system
@MarkHenderson: fiber, cable and POTS
Hah only 30 years old? Lucky you :p
03:42
@MarkHenderson: ... actually all public housing is or will be.
A lot of our copper is so old its SNR is so high people have shitty DSL even though they're not too far from the exchange
private housing, might cause about 500 bucks to get it wired up
Sigh
When they run fibre for the NBN down the street here you can get it run to your property for free
But they have hardly run it anywhere
And when they do the (now) government did such a good scare campaign a lot of people didn't sign up
And for those that did sign up, I've heard a lot of horror stories about the telcos fucking up their rollouts
Cutting off access to all copper service, but not activating the fibre
lol
we're having some deployment issues
there's two main non ISP installers/wholesalers
the one that actually runs the network seems to be having trouble keeping up
My ISP switched from them to the other one.
(see? THAT is why free competition is awesome)
04:10
In that case you'll have to wait for a real FreeBSD expert to come along. I only play one on TV. — Michael Hampton ♦ 26 secs ago
04:30
@cole You're in Seattle? Forever?
04:41
@MichaelHampton that.... shouldn't be possible.
@voretaq7 Yeah, that's more-or-less what I thought.
@MichaelHampton your jail scenario seems the most likely
you could have him manually specify the kernel in the bootloader, but it sounds like it's using the one it should be (the default)
At first, he didn't claim to have rebooted after freebsd-update. He added that bit in later. I'm not sure if he's being truthful...
so the only other situation I could think of is completely esoteric - a geom_mirror gone split-brain - it's booting off the first drive (with an old kernel) , but running off the second (with the upgraded OS)
I see a question every month or two where something like that has happened to a Linux system. So maybe not that esoteric.
04:46
@MichaelHampton I've been using geom_mirror for a little over a decade and it's literally NEVER happened.
First example I found from a quick search...

Q: Server not responding, after reset, all data rolled few months back

Bojan HrnkasA Debian Server stopped responding earlier today. After hardware reset, the data on server was rolled back several months ago to the state it was in february. How is this possible?Everything, logs, webdata, databases, are as if the computer has been turned off on 03. February and turnd on today. ...

I've had them go split-brain, but they realize it and resync off the running disk
Bob
Bob
05:24
@BigHomie That was 2007? O_O
@voretaq7 I had that happen with a Windows Server software mirror once
After the mirror broke and never resynced. Next reboot (which was months later) it all booted off the second drive
So I had to google #tbt... because I guess I don't understand the internet :(
@MichaelHampton is that a "say no to software RAID" warning?
@ewwhite I don't know what that is either
We are so old
@MarkHenderson definitely. I've been playing around on growlr to see if I could find an @mdmarra lookalike, and some of the photos had #tbt
@ewwhite It's a "say yes to monitoring" warning
@ewwhite Throw Back Thursday... what they looked like 20 years and 50 pounds ago.
05:43
@ewwhite I don't know what growlr is, but why are you after an @mdmarra lookalike?
@MarkHenderson Because I miss him :(
@ewwhite Awww you miss your bro
although we talked yesterday... so I guess that's not too bad.
What happened to @MDMarra?
@MichaelHampton @ewwhite stopped paying him
05:54
@MichaelHampton Not sure. But I needed him to start some projects, and he was willing to take them on... so I guess he's alive.
G'day
Nobody stops paying me...one of my friends owns a collection agency.
@MichaelHampton He got a more interesting job
@MichaelHampton one of my clients is a collection agency!
and they called me once for an outstanding Verizon bill :(
anywho, it's quiet in here
@ewwhite Did you use social engineering to get your way out of it?
06:01
It's 2 am!
I used to work in the same building as NetGear when I worked at Cisco, so I used that to get myself some advanced replacements for free and some out of warranty gear replaced
"Oh hey! Are you the guys at Talavera Road? Yeah, I know a guy that works there, <name of owner of the company>. Do you know him? Yeah, anyway, this is what I need"
@MarkHenderson I threatened to shut down their system.
"I'm SSH'ed-in right now... I'll delete you!"
@ewwhite Hah delete your own record
Or, you know, pay your bill
06:12
I was poor back then
I once had an agency call me about an insurance claim, asking for my excess. They sounded so fucking dodgey, and my excess was not overdue, and I could hear so much noise in the background I hung up and immediately called my insurance company to report someone trying to defraud me
Anyway after 45 minutes dicking around with my insurance company, turns out they had sent my claim to a collections agency and the agency was just calling anyone they received, regardless of the actual due date of the invoice
hmmph
@ewwhite Fair enough. I'm sure Verizon can survive with a few late payments
morning, northerns
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson you work in the most interesting places
06:21
@Bob Not really
There are interesting people everywhere
One of the down sides to working for myself is that the possibilities of getting free gear are extremely limited.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelHampton You can give yourself free gear! Wait...
@MichaelHampton I never get free gear from anywhere
Oh you got a free Meraki AP didn't you?
Yeah, I did get one of those. Used it for three weeks, decided it wasn't stable enough, and got rid of it.
And it had shit support for IPv6
Duhhhhhh I dont know how to enter key
I'm fucking out of here; long weekend here so seeya fuckers on Tuesday

so how much drama llama stuff are we expecting today
beats me, I have the joys of killing off spammers today.
joy!
best part of being a mod, honestly
yup!
@MichaelHampton eh. I need to look that up when we get our new internet
APPARENTLY starhub does DHCP v6 for fiber (as opposed to ipv6rd) but I'm not entirely familiar with the setup the local fiber ISPs use
07:22
@RobM someone called a llama?
only drama llamas, yesterday in meta.
If those kinds of people put a quarter of the effort into improving their use of the site that they do into bitching and moaning about being called out on their poor use of the site then they'd have more rep than half the site membership put together.
meta is pretty much there for drama
its too early and i'm too tired and cranky to have to navigate the HP website this morning :-(#
07:32
@RobM: there's never a good time to navigate a support website ;p
(though lenovo haven't managed to fuck the one they inherited from IBM too badly)
I'm sure they will though

Pulling back from the archives this is a repost of a previous blog post. This time ripped from a guest spot at The Security Stack Exchange Community Blog. This question on Security.SE made me think in a rather devious way. At first, I found it to be rather poorly worded, imprecise, and potentially not worth salvaging. After a couple of days I started to realize exactly how many times I

EMC won't sell me eMLC SSD's for our VNX
They say that you can only use those disks with VNX2
it's the same disk enclosure, the same SAS interface and lanes..
you have to wonder
Dan
Dan
I suppose what they really mean is they only support them on VNX2
Well, they won't sell me them at all
You can't buy disk enclosures without giving them a serial # of your system, because it ties into the support contract
and having a 4 hour SLA is why we're paying EMC for storage, instead of DIY :(
Dan
Dan
Yep
kind of shitty of them to be honest..
09:42
yep
Dan
Dan
@pauska But like you say, if they sold it to you they'd have to give you a 4 hour SLA on that solution
@ewwhite can't say I've seen those errors
our kernel panics tend to be the f*ing network drivers
@Dan yes, but I can't figure out how our VNX with 6gbps dual lane SAS running SLC SSD's can't support 6gbps dual lane SAS eMLC SSD's?
Dan
Dan
No, nor me
how can they make more money off you for no real extra work if they don't have foolish rules that require you to buy hardware you really don't need?
09:53
I told my boss that buying the VNX would be a 5 year investement.. the array is 3 years old in november this year
