A: What's the command-line utility in Windows to do a reverse DNS look-up?

nandoPAh right... I forgot windoze is severely limited and invalid for serverside.... I think cygwin tries to mitigate this, but like all windoze things its ugly and bulky Edit... this is supposed to be a comment not answer.... fatfingered phone app.... will fix later Edit 2... Looks like I cant del...

Hulk Smash.
@BigHomie I think I'll just use a shovel to remove all the dirt and replace it with fresh dirt from Home Depot, the dirt that's there is basically sand at this point anyway.
@cole the weekend might be tough as I have my kids this weekend. Might be able to fit something in Sunday night if you're still around.
@Soviero that won't get rid of roots.
@Magellan I will be, I leave Tuesday AM
@BigHomie If I dig until the roots have ended (a few feet down), they won't grow back.
18:07
@Soviero have fun.
@BigHomie Remember, it was a small oleander.
@MichaelHampton ipv4 is for fite
@cole ok. Monday during the day would work great too. My shift starts at 3pm, so daytime is good too.
@Magellan actually that may be the best day for me
my friend starts her new job that day and I'll be alone w/ nothing to do for the day
I'll have a rental too so I'll be mobile.
nice.
18:10
@Tanner should just call out of work Monday
@ewwhite oh jesus. I don't know anyone who's using VSAN currently.
Bob
Bob
why are backups always so fucking difficult
hah. Just got a phone screen invite from Amazon for Digital Products.
@Bob seriously.
Talk about run away.
@Magellan I've heard bad, bad things about Amazon.
Everyone I've told I'm going to Seattle keeps saying "are you going to come back?"
18:12
@cole yeah. Most of the recruiters I've talked to say that Amazon is Microsoft's best recruiter. AMZN brings in piles of people from out of town that don't know how shitty they are and they end up at Microsoft inside of 18 months.
@Magellan is MS that bad?
@cole MS isn't all that bad. Especially now that they're working on fixing the toxic stack-rank culture.
@Magellan Awwwww, but their CEO is sooo cool! Why are they so bad?
@Magellan they also cover SRS for employees.
@cole AMZN though. the horror stories...
18:14
I was about to say, from what I heard MS is getting much better
I think just about everybody at MS knows somebody that worked at AMZN first and walked out after 18 months.
I've noticed a lot of big tech companies are covering SRS for their employees.
@cole it's all about talent.
@Magellan They stayed for 18 months? I've never even stayed at a job that long, but less one I hated.
Which is why I'm interested in eventually leaving for a tech company that does cover it.
18:16
@cole SRS?
@Soviero sex reassignment surgery
@cole Oh, wow, I'm surprised ANY company covers that... I bet you they aren't HQ'd in Texas.
@Soviero I'm not sure how to answer that without being enraged.
Bob
Bob
Oh, prolly shoulda guessed it was a medical thing. And I have no idea how that works in the US.
Come to think of it, I don't know how employer medical coverage works here... might be a good idea to learn sometime
18:18
@BigHomie When did I become the troll!?
Bob
Bob
@BigHomie Keep calm and stop using that sign.
Out of pocket cost (including hysterectomy) for a metoidioplasty (probably should not google that if you're at work) with "the works" is about $45K
Bob
Bob
I bet there's one somewhere that actually says that.
@cole Ouch!
@Bob hence me trying to find a company that covers it :)
@cole That's about $10K over my first salary.
Bob
Bob
18:20
@ton.yeung Anything to do with honeypots?
I've already paid about $8K out of pocket for top surgery. And I pay $60/3 months for testosterone - not including having to go to the doctor and get my blood drawn every 4-6 months
Bob
Bob
@cole Well, I wish you luck with that.
@Bob it's actually my first time using it, feels pretty good~
@Soviero Gotta have one.
kce
kce
I just spend 15 minutes trying to login to EqualLogic's support site because our password vault had four different entries for the login.
I think I just went full retard.
@Bob but you gotta admit, it was appropriate.
18:23
@BigHomie So, who ever is the least liked automatically becomes the de facto troll?
@cole I know a guy... well, a gal now, who had it done for ~$8,000 by getting it done in the Philippines.
@cole Hey, I'm a liberal, I'm on your side. By I live in Texas, and I've become pessimistic and jaded.
You should never start a sentence like that @HopelessN00b
"I know a person, who transitioned..." is better
Bob
Bob
@HopelessN00b But how safe is it there?
18:27
@Bob Did fine by her. Modern facility, real doctors, just a fraction of the price on account of... well, the average wage out there is like 20% of what it is here, so it stands to reason that services (like medical procedures) would be similarly cheaper.
@cole Seemed relevant that it was transitioning the other way. I dunno if it's maybe that has an impact on the cost or not.
@HopelessN00b easier to make an outie and innie
plus I'd have to get my uterus removed, silicone implants for the scrotum and moving the plumbing around so I can urinate correctly.
Man. Sounds like a lot of work... makes me think I've been taking my penis for granted all these years.
2
there's days I really really hate Java Devs.
@Soviero You've always been the troll. Always.
yeah, i know. Don't feed the trolls.
@Magellan Wait, there's days you don't really hate Java developers? Get out.
@HopelessN00b there's days that they only mildly annoy me.
18:41
@HopelessN00b Don't hate the devs, hate Java.
And it pains just how badly some of them are at writing shell scripts.
One of them had an 8-level nested if/then to determine where the 'ps' command lives. As if 'which' command wouldn't have been the best first option. But they'd never heard of that command.
@Magellan How's that work?
@Magellan Which which command?
@HopelessN00b Who's on first?
Oh, for fuck's sake. I just transferred this 5 Gig file over a T1 4 times this weeks because I had a typo in my deployment script. </headdeak>
I need a drink. And a steak. And a blowjob.
18:49
@HopelessN00b ya know. Sometimes it's the simple things in life.
Yeah, like my brain, evidently.
@HopelessN00b 5G over a 1.5Mbps line. I'm surprised the first transfer didn't take a week in and of itself.
And here I complain about how slow 1Gbps Ethernet is nowadays.
@Magellan Took 1 day+ each time. And somehow, each time, I didn't notice I was trying to deploy the wrong file.
Good thing they pay me to keep this chair warm, and not to actually do anything productive.
@HopelessN00b ugh. That's about how I feel with the transition to our new Puppet schema. It's got all the OOP fanciness in it, so I'm having to re-learn all the new techniques.
make a change, validate the code, send it up, figure out why it won't work on the test VM.
ad infinitum
@cole One of the nice things is that you'll get to experience the bizarre-ass June weather that we have here. Forecasters can rarely accurately predict whether it's going to rain, or be leaden grey overcast, or be bright shiny severe-clear in June. And it can change within the course of a 10 mile drive because we're in between 2 mountain ranges.
Puppet?
19:01
@ewwhite I forgot that you are summoned like BeetleJuice when Puppet is mentioned.
4
Just trying to learn
like, @freiheit told me about a config file manipulation library that made more sense than augeas for me
@cole Hah, I might be able to if that works best... Nobody else is out that day.
I have a few vacation days I'll never use anyway...
19:26
Client: I'm trying to send a 8.5 meg file and it keeps coming back. Please see below. I need to be able to send this file.
But once it's encoded, it's probably all 102Mb...
19:43
> Their entries contained blurbs about ways to escape to Mexico, hijacking an aircraft at Denver International Airport and crashing into a building in New York City...
you know that point where you decide you need to polish up your CV ? :)
hot on the heels of last weeks 'syncronise your password at this http url' email. today we get a 'beware of phishing emails, ... click here for more information'.
@ewwhite is it a good library ? I've never got on with augeas, but managed to avoid it at all costs up till now
@Sirex Nice.
20:06
Why is it that when I have a job, I get recruitment calls left and right, but when I lose my job, there aren't any recruiter to be found?
@Soviero yeah, i know what you mean. I want to leave this place but the job market is so small due to the size of the city.
@Sirex Where are you?
wellington, nz.
when i wasnt looking i was still getting calls from recruiters in the uk.
population is about 400k here i think.
@Sirex Oh, damn. I thought you were at least in the US.
nah. i love this place for the home life but the work aspect is real tricky. Esp doing linux and cloudy stuff. Not as bad now that AWS is in sydney but its still a little too far for some things and i dont think many businesses consider it viable yet.
esp if our undersea cable goes kaput.
20:13
@Sirex Dang. We're hiring in Sydney & Melbourne.
yeah, aus is the total opposite work wise. everyone is hiring. and for bonkers money mostly. ... but i don't wanna live there :)
Any PowerShell remoters in the house ATM?
Anyone here a Linux admin, but NOT working at a hosting company?
yeah. me. :)
@Sirex How many years of exp?
20:15
Only hosting companies use Linux. Proof that it's the inferior OS. :p
@Soviero ~6.
@Sirex Ok, that't not bad.
@Sirex If you know any Linux engineers in Sydney or Melbourne that are looking to work for a medium sized startup that's growing like crazy, ping me.
@HopelessN00b i guess licencing costs get bad with that business model ?
@Sirex You could get a pretty penny with that here in Austin, TX. Wana come to the greatest country in the world!!11!
20:17
Um, I don't work at a hosting company.
@Magellan 40 hour/week?
@MichaelHampton Where do you work?
@Soviero At my desk.
zing.
@Sirex For that matter, they might go for remote if you're willing to fly to AUS there periodically.
@Sirex Do like the Chinese. All software's free if you pirate it. :)
20:18
@ewwhite The inifile thing from puppetforge?
@HopelessN00b yessir.
@Sirex And to be fair, I have heard that a lot... and then they roll out RedHat, which is at least as bad as Windows for licensing bullshitery.
@magellan yeah maybe. i've never really thought about remote working. I hear its getting quite popular in the US now though
Do we remotely care about the stock symbol of companies that have tags on ServerFault?
@Sirex It's convenient. Especially since commuting generally sucks anywhere that the jobs are good.
I work in the office a couple days/week, sometimes more if the weather's nice as I ride my motorcycle to the office.
20:20
@HopelessN00b yeah, im a little worried that RH have got their claws into centos now
@Ladadadada The stock symbol? We don't care. I'd rather see a description of why sysadmins would ever run across Symantec in their work.
I wish I could find a job where I could permanently work remotely, that way I can move out to the boonies and have a few acres of land to me name.
@freiheit yeah, that worked out for me well
@BigHomie How do you get useful output in a fan-out configuration? I'm copying an ISO to like 15 sites with robocopy and fan-out remoting, and my console's full of robocopy output, which is useless, because it's not telling me which session or server's copying which file.
@HopelessN00b RH licensing is actually fairly simple.
20:20
@MichaelHampton NOM NOM NOM your money
@MichaelHampton So is Oracle's. Give Us All Your Money.
@MichaelHampton Well, so is Windows OS licensing these days -> Datacenter edition.
Still charge a ton for it.
cough CentOS cough
@magellan do you have a mail address i can ping you at ?
@HopelessN00b Yeah, costs quite a bit. I mostly do CentOS but still...
20:21
@Sirex sure do. [email protected]
@Magellan Is that real? Because this site is indexed, and you'd be screwed.
@Soviero gotta love catch-all addresses.
kk, i'll mail you tonight.
@Sirex sounds good.
@HopelessN00b And RHEL has a similar license, for unlimited VMs
20:24
@MichaelHampton We have an academic site license with unlimited VMs and physical systems. I think the standard VM licensing thing is based on the socket count of your physical hosts for the VM infrastructure.
@MichaelHampton 2 sockets, unlimited VMs, standard support: $2,575
@Soviero I know we've had this conversation before. The vast array of things that you don't know and are unaware of their importance is staggering. You need to get your butt in gear and work on understanding some of this stuff.
@Magellan WTF are you talking about?
@Soviero That's the entire problem. You don't know what I'm talking about.
@Magellan I really wish you would stop picking on me, not sure what I ever did to you to deserve that.
You do this shit all the time.
20:26
Oh, come on. Understanding is highly over-rated. Ignorance is bliss, so it follows that understanding is misery.
Embrace bliss... grab a bottle of liquor and erase some of your knowledge.
@HopelessN00b Never needed to do it, closest I've done is a mass shutdown a few days ago. I just spawned a different process for each psexec thread, which sped things up immensely. There's something about doing a start-job where you can check progress though, perhaps that may help
@Sirex I'm cautiously optimistic about the RHEL-CentOS thing. We'll see what happens when RHEL 7 finally is released.
@Soviero Your attitude of entitlement is obnoxious. Go spend another 5 years in the industry busting your tail to learn how it all works.
yeah. i'm trying hard to not see it as 'centos is now fedora, for servers'. Must stay optimistic.
@BigHomie Yeah, I can check progress from another window... but thousands of lines of "1.3%" seems like ... well, I was hoping I was doing something simple wrong. Oh well.
20:30
@Magellan Why do you think you have a clue what I know or am ignorant of? I've always been praised anywhere I've been employed, so who are you to decide I'm not good enough?
@Sirex No, you'll still be able to get "Core" which is "the same as RHEL". They're just doing other stuff as well
@MichaelHampton like projectatomic.io
Apologies gents for spamming your screens with another attempt at a life lesson.
@MichaelHampton that's encouraging, at least.
@MichaelHampton With Scientific Linux, CentOS can fade into obscurity without upsetting too many people.
20:32
@Soviero Huh?
@Soviero i do hope not. i've only just finished purging scientific snowflakes from our network.
@MichaelHampton Scientific Linux is a fine alternative if CentOS fails to perform over time.
which is kind of ironic, since my company do nuclear science.
@MichaelHampton If you weren't a mod, I'd suggest putting him on ignore. The channel is much less stressful that way.
@Soviero Don't bet on it. Last I heard, SL wanted in on the Red Hat action too.
20:33
@Sirex We have a combination of CentOS, Scientific Linux, and RHEL proper depending on generation of server, and they all work together perfectly well.
Or at least it's less stressful when I have him on ignore.
@MichaelHampton Really, why? They're already well funded by CERN aren't they?
2 hours ago, by BigHomie
user image
@BigHomie This again?
Anyone using golang or docker in anger ? Both seem to have kicked up more of a storm than seems due at this stage, imho.
20:36
@Soviero Have you any idea what is necessary to put together a Linux distribution of any size?
When did a legitimate discussion become trolling?
@Soviero You prefer flaming?
@MichaelHampton Yes, but I can't imagine that CERN of all orgs doesn't have the resources to pull it off.
@BigHomie Ya, at least fire looks cool.
@Magellan I worked with a guy a lot like you. I complained about him to our mutual manger, and he was quickly silenced.
@Soviero I don't think vague veiled threats are the right way to convince everybody else that you're right and he's wrong...
@Sirex chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/15887648#15887648 <--- it's as its first steps but looks promising, with a big step forward security-wise which is one of the great concerns when using containers
20:40
@BigHomie What's wrong with flaming? Those guys have a great fashion sense, and know how to mix a yummy drink, to boot.
@HopelessN00b No, that's Fabulous.
@HopelessN00b Yeah, I'd definitely say @Soviero is flaming.
@freiheit That wasn't a threat, veiled or otherwise, I just don't know what to say to make him leave me alone.
@BigHomie Oh gee, thanks.
@Soviero Click on his name and click the "Ignore this user" link. That will definitely do the trick.
@BigHomie Sorry. After 20 years of this, I really should know better.
20:42
@freiheit But I don't want to simply ignore him, as much as it's likely a fools errand, I'd like him to simply like me.
@Soviero Never, ever, seek the goal of people liking you. It's a terrible plan. The closest you can get is being likable. That is, control your own choices and actions and don't try to directly affect others' feelings or actions.
@Soviero See, me liking you is also irrelevant. Chasing after that from anyone is a fool's errand. Because I also don't care. If you bring some value to the conversation and ask educated questions based upon a some research of the topic we're discussing, then you'll get respect. Which is what's actually worth having.
@freiheit or learn to be ok being an asshole. I highly recommend it.
@freiheit I suppose this is good advice, but @Soviero your comments are flame bait, hence the [tag:[troll]]
stupid markdown
@Sirex I strive for cheerfully likable asshole. :)
20:45
@BigHomie Talking about CentOS vs SciLinux is troll bait?
When you are just spouting off, yes. When you can actually drop some facts to back it up, different story. Often you don't drop facts, just 'personal preference'.
Fine you all win. @Magellan Fuck you, and kiss my ass.
And @Magellan is gone from this chat.
(AFAIK)
@BigHomie Gone too
thnx bro
@BigHomie Sometimes a good ragequit is relaxing.
20:49
@Soviero <shrug> You know, when this girl I know was trying to get me to like her, she stuck her tongue down my throat. Then put it on other parts of me... that might work for you. :p
There There, let it all out big guy
@HopelessN00b Along those same lines, I considered just paying my coworker to like me.
@Soviero So you really can't see this eh? Or are you just pretending
I think he's pretending in hopes that we'll say something he can flag
Well, the not-giving-a-fuck approach is cheaper, for what that's worth.
@HopelessN00b That works here, but in the corporate world, it could get me fired.
20:51
What on earth did I walk into..
@pauska Excitement, fun and confusion!
@pauska I don't know, but @Magellan started it.
@pauska I was trying to explain something to Kevin again. Once again, it didn't go over well.
Come on guys. Stop bullying the guy.
@Sirex Don't worry, I'm used to it. Feels a lot like high school, but w/ less punching.
20:53
@BigHomie Yeah. This is also why I sometimes daydream about what the internet would be like if you had to be 21 to be online.
@Sirex heh, check his transcripts. You don't bully trolls, you defend yourself.
no idea if it's relevant or not, but one thing I learned after many, many flame wars on IRC is that you can't read peoples faces in chats.. sarcasm and irony is usually the big culprit :)
@Magellan probably more porn unfortunately, but less trolls. I'd miss @PatoSáinz actually, he's actually quite the young intellectual
@pauska yeah, that's why i stopped chatting to my wife via yahoo years ago. got into so many arguments over nothing.
@pauska but you have :p -_- :) :D /sarc /rhetorical /etc.
20:55
@Sirex it's also the reason why I always use facetime/skype with my GF.. it didn't end well when we used to chat when I was on business trips
I don't need emoticons. Anything I say, you can be sure I'm being an asshole.
3
@BigHomie Indeed. Has some good stuff to say.
@MichaelHampton One day, when I have enough experience that I'll keep my job even if no one there likes me, I'll just resign to being an asshole too.
Do we have another he who shall not be named?
@Magellan has an archnemesis now along w/ @HopelessN00b??
@BigHomie @BigHomie I suppose I'm easily irritated by people (other than my children) that are looking to me for validation. I owe those people nothing, and they need to get the hell off my porch.
20:59
I can dig it, but if that were the case there are better ways to go about it
Well, like they say, it's always 5:00 somewhere. That just happens to be here. Catch yall later.
@BigHomie yeah, never been my strong suit.
Wait, what's this about me, now?
Just chill.. it's the internet.. we have enough of a tough time to attract people to this site/room for the professional part of the site.. flamewars will just scare away anyone who reads the log
@HopelessN00b No, I did NOT say that you look handsome in a suit.
@pauska At least those that the 55 gallon tub of lube didn't scare away already.
@Magellan Meh. Only time I wear a suit is when I'm trying to get a judge to go easy on me anyway.
21:02
@HopelessN00b Yup. Gotta look like a good sheep.
@Magellan hah, almost forgot that one
ok. Time to go to work and figure out this new-fangled object-oriented Puppet stuff. Later gents.
Dammit, last one in the office. A new personal low.
@BigHomie It's only 5:00 somewhere about 40 times a day, at most only once every 15 minutes
Anonymous
@bighomie (also magellan) i'm flattered

@MikeyB whaaaa?
@ewwhite What's the easiest way to pass network configuration information into a VM? Encode it into the MAC :D
@MikeyB fancy
@ewwhite I'm sure there's a way to pass info like that in via the DMI table or something. Just not sure where to look.
My bad client approved the server upgrade!!
21:54
@ewwhite Awesome! Wha'd it take?
@MikeyB nothing. Sorry for the delay, but I have reviewed these. We’re good to move ahead. We do not need the upgraded switch (quote #2576) as we have no plans on a phone system upgrade. Also, what is the optional tape drive for in the first quote?
...
@ewwhite He's stalking you on SF chat.
afk bitches have a gnarly time
kk
@dan around?
@MathiasR.Jessen well, yeah ;)
@PatoSáinz It's all good man
I gotta give you props: Most old pervs pretend to be 16 year old schoolgirls online, at least you're going for a young foreigner w/ accelerated computer skillz

@pauska I need SQL Enterprise :'( Emergency addition of clustered index during working hours has locked the whole table for 8 minutes and counting
Only 640,000 rows
22:28
Still locked, 22 minutes
kce
kce
@MarkHenderson :(
Nobody needed to get any work done today, right?
@MichaelHampton It's still only 8:30am
If it's still going at 9am I will consider a rollback
ouch
Done! 27 minutes
Phew

22:34
Random iSCSI question: You can have more than one Portal Group address right?
@kce You certainly can
kce
kce
@MarkHenderson - Hmmm. Maybe our little EqualLogic doesn't support it.
Oh wait hang on
multiple addresses
Sorry I read that as multiple groups
Well my LeftHand stuff allows me to add as many virtual IPs to the cluster as I like
So are you talking about from the initiator or the target?
kce
kce
As far as I can tell from the RFC you can have multiple Portal Groups.
@MarkHenderson - The host.
My predecessor configured the SAN as 192.116.116.0/24 which is not a netblock we own.
@kce Well that was smart
kce
kce
22:43
I was hoping to avoid doing a cutover by setting up another network and migrating things over host at a time.
Unfortunately I don't have any equallogic stuff any more to test with
kce
kce
@MarkHenderson - Uh. Yeah. I mean it's not the end of the world but it probably needs to be fixed.
Maybe I whip up a question just to see if what I want to do is possible and then off to supprot
Yeah just checked with our lefthand - can add as many IPs to the cluster as I like
@kce Sounds like a plan
kce
kce
@MarkHenderson - Thanks. I didn't want go barking up the wrong (nonexistant) tree.

@cole !!!
Blast from the past, anyone?
TOTSE (, commonly mispronounced as "toot-see," "toat-see," or "toats") was a San Francisco Bay Area website and former BBS dedicated to storing text files on a variety of subjects and viewpoints, many of which were unusual or controversial. The name is an acronym for Temple of the Screaming Electron. History TOTSE was started by Jeff Hunter, real name unknown (a founding member of NIRVANAnet) in 1989 as a dial-up BBS originally named "& the Temple of the Screaming Electron". The original &TOTSE specialized in small text files. (Hunter had an old 8088 PC XT clone with limited hard drive s...
@BigHomie I was on dialup BBSes during part of that time, but mostly just 707 area code, not 415 or 510. I don't recognize TOTSE or NIRVANAnet... Most stuff in my area was WWIV or FidoNet, with a small Citadel contingent.
I didn't come across it personally until '97 or a little later, never hit the irc or forums but the text files were... interesting.
23:29
hey all
anyone good with MySQL?
@MattBear Define "good"
I've heard of MySQL.
@MarkHenderson well... we've been having issues with stored procedures disappearing on our dev server
and now users are disapearing
and in the last 5 minutes... root is now locked out
I think one of the devs has written some bad queries
You let developers screw with the production database?!
no....
hence the "dev server"
23:41
@MattBear Users are disappearing? That sounds like corruption of the mysql DB...
Oh, right, dev server. That'll teach me to read.
@MichaelHampton :p

@MattBear Sounds like it
@freiheit haha thanks
my primary concern though is... how do I find what/who is deleting users and stored procs?
@MattBear Does MySQL have some sort of profiler where you can record whats going on in the server and then step through it later?
@MarkHenderson that's what I'm wondering
