@Bob very true
Anyway my battery is at 7% and I left my charger elsewhere so I best be off
Cya
@kce Look into SCUP
@Wesley congrats btw!
kce
kce
@cole - Without SCCM? Can I use SCUP with WSUS?
@kce yessir
kce
kce
@cole - SWHEET!
@kce :)
00:26
Just ordered my video card for my XBMC box - nice little weekend project :)
strange days. Non-domain-joined machine lost it's user profile - it had been using a roaming profile
@RyJones huh, that's odd.
@cole yeah, like impossible odd
@RyJones had it ever been domain-joined?
@cole doubtful, it's a rackspace VM
00:30
Definitely weird unless the VM was created from a template that had been joined to a domain?
@cole no idea. I think it's a red herring
Sounds it.
Large cat is large:
user image
2
haha
nice cat
@cole did you ever hear back from my boss?
@FalconMomot I did, then responded then didn't hear back
He's a big cat, meow.
He's even softer than he looks
00:43
aha, we're logged in to a new profile
remotely administering a machine via irc is hard
lol
Jesus they put like extra hots on this sub
01:05
@RyJones why
also, small poll: would you all close a question with the title: "what should be on the front of my website?" (possible answers being e.g. Apache/Nginx/your favorite bloatware webserver capable of doing vhosts? a static cacher with vhost abilities? something else/a combination?)
it would be an interesting question but I'm worried it's too broad or too opinion-based
@strugee the machine is a VM in a private network on a VM I cannot RDP to
@RyJones haha that sucks
01:30
@strugee goatse.cx
@MikeyB yeah, I'm not going to run a Flash applet on a webpage that has "goatse" in the name...
2
@strugee You went there? Bro, do you even Internet?
@MikeyB I wanted to know what the cx domain was
but all through the experience I was like "this is a horrid idea"
I opened it in a private tab
@strugee dot.cx ← safe
@MikeyB you're like the least trustworthy person I know
along with every single other person in this room
...wtf am I looking at
@MikeyB wow, I'm impressed!
PSA: A lot of TLDs have dot.TLD which represents the TLD's registry
@MikeyB oh, I didn't know that
for your amusement: wwwdotcom.com
the question still stands, btw. would that be closed?
@strugee Yes
@Jacob ok, I'll refrain
01:49
@FalconMomot Hey can I still send mine in? Or are you only looking for the admin not ops?
@Wesley I was riding my bike, went to the pharmacy, and when I exited it was pouring rain :(
@Jacob Makes a man out of you!
In better news, I learned that I know how to make decent profit in the stock market.
Or at least, a slightly more weathered cyclist.
YAY! I'm still in first place!
@Wesley :P
does anyone know who I can bother to fix @sfstarwall? it's been broken for like a month
02:01
Pretty sure that @voretaq7 made that
Probably best that it's broken. Some things shouldn't be on twatter
You lot say some questionable shit
02:15
haha tru
but if it's twattered you can get semi-live updates!
anyone tried deploying gpg in the enterprise ? As in, users regularly sending gpg mail and / or running a local keyserver etc ?
@Sirex sounds like a terrible idea
"I sent an email to my friend from my work account and they got gibberish! what's a PGP?" "don't send personal emails from your work email!"
yeah, it sounded kinda terrible to me too, but currently people are emailing passwords and similar stuff in emails, which is worse really. I guess the root problem is, how do you deal with passing out passwords for accounts or encrypted files between users ?
02:24
@Sirex What type of email system do you have?
Exchange?
lotus.
@Sirex e gasp
and it's out of my scope also, so i can't touch it.
i realize this is a fighting-with-hand-behind-back situation.
@Sirex are you being asked to fix it, or are you being proactive?
I guess I'd say the same thing either way: go to the person who has Lotus in scope, and if they won't help, go to your boss
that'd be my advice
proactive / it annoys the crap out of me. Its got the point people encrypt a file and send it over email, then email the password for it. ;-/
02:27
obligatory disclaimer: I cannot legally hold a job
yea, was afraid you'd say that :)
@strugee Sure you can
@Jacob no I can't
@Sirex NOt familiar with lotus but do people access it securely?
02:30
at least not anything but an internship. not old enough.
Like with SSL POP3/IMAP or an activesync type protocol?
Yes... Yes you can,
my A Block teacher (who teaches UX and coding, then goes off to her real job at a startup) actually offered me an internship, but apparently their legal department was concerned that any NDA I signed wouldn't be legally binding
@strugee Have your parents sign it
That's how everyone else does it
jacob, some do, most dont.
@Jacob presumably that wouldn't work for some reason. I dunno
@Jacob huh, I stand corrected
thanks
02:33
@strugee Did you ask?
@Jacob no
@strugee You should :)
you just told me
oh I see what you're saying
I didn't have my heart set on it or anything so it wasn't a big deal
besides, I have an aversion to NDAs
@strugee Urm. IMHO you should always pursue those.
@strugee Erm why?
You'll never get a job without it
@Jacob I know
it's not like I won't sign one I just don't like them
it's the free culturist inside me speaking out
@Jacob probably.
next time.
02:40
Also, overall it seems like literally noone uses gpg or any public encryption. Is there some hip and trendy tool that i'm missing ? gpg has been around for ages and the uptake is appalling. I did see keybase.io is in alpha, but i'm not convined it'll make a dent.
worse than ipv6 uptake ;-/
@Sirex: which is a crying shame.
@Sirex I don't send any mail that requires security outside of my work
@Sirex leap.se should fix stuff, when it's finally ready
the problem is Zooko's Triangle
hii alll
02:42
@sismaster Hello sir.
@mossy do you know wordpress
i am stuck in one situation please help me
@sismaster Unfortunately
@sismaster: Have a look at the channel topic.

@Jacob I couldn't find the mail-in order option, remember?
@MichaelHampton Why waste the bandwith
@Jacob Just making sure it's up to date before nuking it :)
@strugee OK, just choose another pmt except cryptocoins, and don't pay
02:45
@Jacob ok...
won't it fail?
@strugee Until I manually approve it...
@Jacob gotcha
@Jacob ok, I didn't enter any card information and submitted
was that what you wanted?
@strugee Well, I need my 2 factor key to login, but that's in the other room , and I really don't feel like getting it... So Sure :)
@Jacob haha
ok then
@Jacob let me know if you get motivated
no rush, I fully understand
Raspberry Pi - for when absolutely, positively want to spend 4 days trying to get a wifi adapter working.
02:59
@RyanRies \o/
get a Respects your Freedom adapter and you won't have any problems
lol
@RyanRies: I thought the tiny ralink nano adaptors worked fine?
granted, mine's on a wired connection, under my desk for backups for now.
@JourneymanGeek Dunno, I'm trying to use the one that came with the kit... the Ethernet worked fine, wifi is a whole different story.
Are you not allowed to have a wired connection and a wireless connection at the same time?
you can use both but ethernet usually takes precidence
with SOME applications you can bind an IP address
(actually I suspect thats true of most multihomed systems. I do have a workaround that lets me use both client side, but that isn't true as a server - but in that case, you can listen to all the interfaces or bind it in many cases)
03:05
@JourneymanGeek "Route via the most expedient interface you stupid packet!"
so you have wpa supplicant installed?
also, meh, try setting it up the old fashioned way ;p
OH
try running wpa-gui as root/using sudo.
That just gives me a blank grey window a bunch of "Error: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)" messages in the console.
@JourneymanGeek I suspect that your WiFi issues could be resolved with the use of jQuery and/or regular expressions.
@Jacob: and regex.
@RyanRies: yeah, try the old fashioned way then.
@JourneymanGeek OK... I'll have to find what the old fashioned way is first :)
03:10
@RyanRies /etc/networks ;p
@JourneymanGeek HISS
@voretaq7: meh, it has its advantages.
@JourneymanGeek HISSSSSSSSSS
@RyanRies: you could also try wpa_cli
@JourneymanGeek u suk
=P
03:13
(actually the sky looked even wierder. It was baby poop gold)
hm, actually no. I should have a photo of the poop coloured sky somewhere else
@JourneymanGeek Anything where the man page begins The networks file contains information regarding the known networks which comprise the DARPA Internet. is too old - just let it die unused in peace :)
Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying
@RyanRies: I suspect THATS your main issue.
I haven't thought about the networks file since my Bear Stearns days
@voretaq7: I use mine suprisingly often
03:15
@JourneymanGeek . . . what fresh hell of an environment do you work in man?!
@voretaq7 Bear Sterns isn't going under :)
@Jacob Factually Correct Statement!
(they done went - and got bought by the OctoSquid known as Chase)
@voretaq7: One guy and a dog ;p
03:16
"Banks should never be used as an example of how to do ANYTHING."
@JourneymanGeek . . . does the dog like to trip the halon release?
@voretaq7: Small home office engineering firm. So.. our fire plan is a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
and the case of using the networks file is when I was experimenting having the seedbox as a spare AP, after our WRT54GL went down after close to a decade of service ;p
@JourneymanGeek ...is it halon? :)
No idea
PROBABLY not.
Its probably class A B C ;p
I think. Maybe. nothing's caught fire yet
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yet :P
I only got a home fire extinguisher last month.
Here's hoping I never have to use it.
@Bob: one must be optimistic. Or Pessimistic. Or certainly realistic.
Bob
Bob
03:23
Which reminds me, I really should learn the fire evac routes at work sometime...
(Lets see, I'm prepared for at least two of my systems completely failing at the same time, my backups are on a USB drive that should be simple to grab, and if I had an offsite to store to, I can trivially set it up. On almost no budget) ;p
You're all welcome.
04:18
Damn, apparently /etc/init.d/networking restartactually means /etc/init.d/networking goodbyeforever
@RyanRies Well what did you do to your /etc/networking/interfaces file?
Fucked it, apparently! :)
All part of the learning curve
@RyanRies Yep. As a fellow Windows admin who has to clunk around on Linux boxes, you have my sympathy
Bob
Bob
@RyanRies Does service <someservice> restart work in Raspbian (assuming you're using that)?
Pretty sure Linux networking is more black magic than Windows.
Tried to configure multiple IPs on one interface a few months ago.

@MarkHenderson Best part is, that's not even the right path! :P
05:30
@MarkHenderson here's a nickel, kid. get yourself a real operating system.
/me tosses @MarkHenderson a nickel
@strugee I.. have no use for a nickel
Unless it's like 1,000kg of nickel in which case I can probably sell it at a metal market
@MarkHenderson bro
I misquoted, but oh well

indeed
@JourneymanGeek there are too few people who are engaged and with the correct privileges to carry that through on SF and then there're always the whingers who go on and on about 'where you never new to $task'
Sure everyone is new to stuff but good people read the documentation, build up a basic understanding and move forward from that. They don't jump in at deep end and then ask how do I get out of the pool ?let alone how do I swim?

@Iain I had my second ever ride out with Prime yesterday. He was a lot more relaxed, so was I of course.
09:44
@JennyD cool - just walking for faster or is that excitement still to come ?
@Iain Just walking for now.
Best part was the other horse started baulking at one place. Prime looked at him like "oh, am I supposed to start backing too?" I told him "no, let's just go on" which he did with only a little hesitation. That's very promising.
Yes, there's nothing worse than having horses all be jittery just because one decided it didn't like <something it's seen a million times before>
10:37
@Jacob if you think you are qualified. we're looking for both an admin and ops.
@cole it's not dead yet the hiring manager is busy
fuck I am so drunk still
@FalconMomot since when ?
I heard that horses are afraid of two categories of things:
1) Things that move
2) Things that don't move.
I've found, though that there is a third category which is equally scary:
3) Things that don't exist.
@JennyD 3 is very popular

@ScottPack Super cold, and super deadly!
It's comforting to know that we have 2000lbs of ammonia less than 100 feet from the office...
But hey, that's what the alarm is for!
So here's a question I never thought I'd have to ask... is it normal to have to power off your network gear for fumigation?
Maybe @ewwhite knows.
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I have to say it depends on what they're using
Just got an invite to a "meeting" from 2pm-7pm today.

"Lunch at Hooters and Godzilla in IMAX 3D" is in the meeting notes.

@MDMarra Sounds like a meeting worth attending. Wish I had those.

@MikeyB I dunno, I ended up aliasing a eth0:0 and assigning that one an IP (no, this isn't an important system. yes, you can sigh in relief now.)
Moved my cube today.
@MDMarra the beard is back \o/
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork The only downside is that I finished my customer DNS cutover early this week, so I was looking forward to an unofficial 4 day weekend
@Bob eth0:0 is a label assigned to the second IP on the interface.
13:55
But now I need to eat free wings and see a free movie. What a drag, right guys?
@Bob To do it nicely in Ubuntu:
@MDMarra nice. I got a meeting invite from 4-6PM on July 17th for beer and burgers at Bar Louie
@MDMarra you have a tough, tough life...

@Bob It's not really an interface, it's an alias. Run ip addr and you'll see.

How would one go about flushing the contents of swap back into memory, now that I've cleared up the problem?
@KevinSoviero swapoff -a ; swapon -a (but you don't really need to do that)
13:59
@ScottPack hahahahhaha no
not right this second
@MikeyB Monitoring is triggering on swap usage.
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork The lights are off in my office, I think there's 2 or 3 people besides me here.
