@TheCleaner I think @Jacob because I have no idea what you're talking about. :P
@TheCleaner What'd you find?
2006 SAAB 9-3 AERO - V6 TURBO WAGON- DUAL EXHAUST
Something different...I like different. I don't want a car that everyone else owns.
@TheCleaner I get that.
@TheCleaner I'll buy a car that everyone has, then put 20s on it.
Now it looks different!
:) - my daughter wants me to get a monster truck...I need something with at least semi-decent gas mileage. My backup choice is going to be a CX-7.
@TheCleaner You know you want a HumVee.
13:07
monster cleaner truck
@TheCleaner Looks clean
@DennisKaarsemaker :) I could write it off as a business loss! IRS: "how much did you make last year on your vac biz?" Me: "Less than nothing...apparently you have to use it as a vacuum and not a daily driver".
It's so hot in here, and I'm about to take a caffeine pill... This is going to suck.
that looks like fun.
Anyone run XBMC?
13:11
@BigHomie I don't think fun even begins to describe the feeling of running over puny smarts and priuses with that thing.
@cole I did for awhile.
@mossy what did you use for hardware?
@cole yup
@BigHomie That would be awesome to own...but not actually drive.
@BigHomie My wallet already is crying... So. Much. Gas...
13:13
@KevinSoviero what are you running for hardware/OS?
@cole Yep
Raspberry Pi (Model B - got both a Rev 1 and 2)
One big complaint though; it does not playback at the correct framerate (plays at 24 or 30 fps even). If you're watching movies or any recorded media this isn't a problem. But for live streams, like watching TV it's causes the video to freeze/stutter as it exhausts the buffer now and then.
@ChrisS works well?
@cole My old desktop from before I bought my new laptop.
Assuming its a Model B Pi.
Here's the car I'll take...just set up the financing...I'm cool with paying the payments...
13:15
@cole I ran it on a RPi a while back, and it was WAY to slow/crashed often
@cole Old HP desktop. To be honest i have no idea what CPU is in it.
Hrmm..wonder if I can scoop up an old Dell laptop (E6400-E6410) from the laptop refresh
What makes a nimble 2500 lb convertible even more fun? Why 449 rear-wheel horsepower of course! The source of that power is a Ford 427ci Windsor V8 bolted together by the crew at Paul Anthony Race Engines.
I was looking at Intel NUCs because of the form factor.
13:16
@cole An audrino or a more powerful board would run XBMC fine
@NathanC WTF? Are you insane!?
there's tons of other options other than the Pi now ha
Coworker bought this and said it's awesome: newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856173034
@KevinSoviero I've got 0 problems with crashing for about the last year. When I first got it the software was decidedly buggy.
@KevinSoviero Well no...there are other boards out there other than the Pi
13:18
@cole we've run some zotac's at the office. They are pretty flaky on their wireless...hard wired was fine. Not fast enough for office use though...even basic office use.
I'd like to ditch cable completely, so.
@cole we ditched it 3 years ago...never looked back.
@TheCleaner yeah, obviously going to need to pay the early term fee but still cheaper than paying $120/month for cable + internet
Seeing as work pays $50/month towards my internet
@TheCleaner @cole been about a year for us
Even if the 75/35 package will cost $70ish I'm still better off.
13:20
Intel's Minnow Board looks like it might make a good base for a media player.... I don't know anyone with one though.
@NathanC No, no, I meant that you said ARDUINO, that was the "WTF?" moment.
@cole It helped that we only watch a couple of shows and those come on network TV. For movies it's pretty much exclusively Amazon Prime.
So side note, I'm talking (as in, leading up to dating kind of talking) to a woman who is also a SysAdmin. It's weird because she completely understands what I'm saying.
5
This actually may work for XBMC:
newegg.com/Product/…-EMC-052014-Index--DesktopPCs-_-83156084-L030D
ARGG fucking Solarwinds
@cole I think we have a pair of those floating around the office
Not a bad price
13:26
@ChrisS several dozen here
@cole - allow me to make a suggestion. Tivo Premiere. Buy one used with the subscription off Ebay or Craigslist. We love ours. The only downside is Amazon Prime streaming has to be done through the smart features of the TV itself...the Tivo only does Netflix and Hulu Plus. But the remote/guide/simplicity of it is about the ONLY thing out there like it. I almost considered a Simple.TV but didn't want to deal with being an early adopter. XBMC is cool, you can pair it with a Hauppage or
HomeRun HD...but it was too much of a PITA to mess with versus a simple remote and Tivo.
morning
@dennis Booking.com wants to hire me!
@TheCleaner How is a tivo subscription different than cable?
@ewwhite dammit. I take one day off and they already are making mistakes
13:31
@BigHomie $9/month is pretty different.
@DennisKaarsemaker At this moment we have an opening for a Senior Systems Engineer - Systems Architect with experience of Linux in a large online services environment...
@TheCleaner meh, yeah, I see what you're saying, I thought it was more than that, but it's just a DVR, and that's what pisses me off
I am a recruiter at Booking.yeah! one of the world’s leading e-commerce companies. We are truly global with over 120 offices worldwide.
Well holy shit
Sr Manager called me into his office
@cole and?
13:32
Gave me an iPad Air for doing a good job.
@cole that's incentive. Most managers aren't too good at rewarding good work
@ewwhite that job's no good for you.
@BigHomie yes...we only got it for the dvr and guide functionality. Those are some must haves if you ditch cable...IMO.
@ewwhite definitely really boosted my spirits today.
also, I thought we had closed that job
13:33
@DennisKaarsemaker :(
@cole does it run NT?
2
Gah can't star on mobile
@DennisKaarsemaker :P
@DennisKaarsemaker I'll reply to him and tell him that you think I'm unqualified... Then I'll thank him for his time.
@TheCleaner yeah, I did the MythTV thing, but even with that, you have to have an external subscription to a digital TV guide, like you said, a must
13:35
@ewwhite hehe. It's not a matter of being unqualified, it's just not the kind of job you seem to like. Very hands off
@DennisKaarsemaker I'm very high-touch.
@ewwhite that's what she said
@Jacob Request desktop site?
@Dennis are you kidding? @Cole new iPad is the BDC for the NT4 domain
@Jacob @cole's iPad is the new TomTom's phone?
13:38
@BigHomie some of the newer TVs have built in guides, but they are pretty flaky. I would LOVE it if the stupid PS4 was allowed by the US to have something like PlayTV on it. It would be a perfect DVR. But the stupid cable company lobbyists...
@thecleaner Hack time!!
:) I'm not that adventurous with something my wife barely let me have to begin with.
6
@TheCleaner If that didn't earn a star...
14:00
@TheCleaner your testicles?
@DennisKaarsemaker After this many years of marriage I've learned that I can have anything I want...as long as I approach the situation correctly. :)
HP support just told me to try reseating or replacing drive 32 in an enclosure that holds 25 drives.
@ChrisS have you asked them to send the imaginary drives?
@ChrisS d'oh
@DennisKaarsemaker They're in the cloud!
14:03
@ChrisS Clearly they mean drive 26… shit even 32₈ doesn't work.
@DennisKaarsemaker No, I'm rather ticked off already. I opened the case yesterday; send the logs immediately. Got an e-mail 30 minutes later asking for the logs.... Then no response until today.
@ChrisS it's HP support, did you expect anything else?
@MikeyB The logs show a disk error on slot 32... No idea how that's possible. The logs do not show a disk in slot 32, so it's not completely off it's rocker.
@ChrisS Clearly that's the error. Got an MCA disk handy to hold beside the rack? Have you seriously tried the holistic approach?
My girlfriend convinced me to go work with her at an amusement park this weekend...that's one way to make some extra money >.>
14:06
@MikeyB Didn't think about doing an exorcism... I'll call a priest.
@ChrisS Liberal application with a blunt object works sometimes
@NathanC If I didn't need this thing to work it'd be in the parking lot under a sledge hammer already.
@ChrisS It sucks being at the mercy of support for any vendor...
@NathanC That's why VARs who know what they're doing are awesome. :) Shit dude, I've written an NVRAM patch for a NIC problem before IBM even responded to the ticket.
^^^ I need this ^^^
It's really only the first line support that commonly pisses me off.
14:11
@KevinSoviero hah, my dad tried that with my brother a couple years ago...
@ChrisS 1-2 for me, depending on where I'm calling.
problem was he'd started working for MS that November. Between the sign on bonus and the first pay check, he'd actually made more than my dad, making the return look a little... funky.
@ChrisS I wonder how many people reading that realized what the 'subway map' was all about
@BigHomie what is that about?
14:14
@MikeyB Yeah. I was on the phone with "Advanced Technical Support" at time warner Friday for a PRI issue (no outbound calls). They weren't the least bit helpful and didn't even look at the problem for 4 hours
@BigHomie ahahaha
the problem resolved itself in the end, but my GM is pissed at them and rightfully so
Sidenote to that commic - I had that exact problem. Called Comcast half a dozen times, level 1 script people... Restart the modem, restart the computer... I got in a huge argument with one, I pulled up the webpage for the modem, it said it was losing the connection now and then, told support, he insisted the webpage was for the router, not the modem. 1. the webpage said SURBOARD MODEM, it's for the modem. 2. I F---ING BUILT THE ROUTER MYSELF, it doesn't even have a webpage thingy.
I finally got a level 2 support person, within 30 seconds "Oh, I see our CMTS shows protocol errors ... blah blah blah ... I'll have a guy out there tomorrow to replace the line filter. Next morning guy replaces a $1 part, fixes it, all good since.
Linux people... can you restart the libvirtd service without impacting VMs?
14:17
@ewwhite Yes, no worries.
@MikeyB I need it to refresh upon initial installation of the lxc package. That seems to be what initiates the virbr0 interface.
I think... hard to tell
@ChrisS Yeah, I wanted to know if I could bridge their business class modems once (who the heck needs their router), had to go through level 1 support first.
Just for them to transfer me to level 2 and the guy says ha ha, nope. Sorry
@ewwhite Probably. Or you can define your bridges by hand. Or virsh net-start default should also do it.
Now they want a new copy of the logs... They must think something is going to change.
@BigHomie I did the bridging thing with one of time warner's modems once...it was an easy one-click option. Unfortunately, in doing so it disables the web UI and it took a while for me to figure out how to access it again
14:19
@ChrisS "Sure, for my consulting fee of $200/h I'll gather the logs for you and help diagnose your system."
Ok expense reports are done, yay
@NathanC Really? You couldn't access it from the internal side?
@BigHomie Only wired and only with a static IP (it lived on 192.168.x.1)
@ewwhite virsh start net virbr0 or something
So it kept its internal IP address, but just wasn't routable via normal means
14:21
@MikeyB scheduling the service to start handled it
@NathanC Yeah, that makes sense. I was trying to subvert the system by not renting a static IP from them. If I did, then the modem would have kept its comcast IP, routed my rented IP to my network, then I wouldn't have needed to bridge and I wouldn't have run into your situation either, but for $20/month? Seriously?
I want to charge something around $60 to my credit card on a monthly basis, any ideas?
@KevinSoviero Cash advance to my paypal? ;)
@NathanC Uh... no.
@BigHomie IPs are expensive yo
@KevinSoviero Damn.
14:24
@NathanC IP(v4)s are expensive you mean.
@BigHomie F--- Comcast's modems. Those pieces of sh*t aren't worth the plastic they're made out of. I refuse to use anything but GI/Motorola Surfboard modems.
@NathanC so is RAM
@BigHomie RAM is insanely cheap, yeah.
@ChrisS +1, got a surfboard at home. I contemplated quoting one for my clients, they stand up well in production? I have never had problems at home with mine, but I don't have a business connection at home either
@MikeyB Not for a VPS
@BigHomie Aww yieah.
14:29
@BigHomie The SB5120 had design flaws; I had the misfortune of getting one free from a friend; ended up recycling it. I'm currently using SB6120 at half a dozen places (including my house) and absolutely love those things.
anybody use this?
A blob (alternately known as a binary large object, basic large object, BLOB, or BLOb) is a collection of binary data stored as a single entity in a database management system. Blobs are typically images, audio or other multimedia objects, though sometimes binary executable code is stored as a blob. Database support for blobs is not universal. Blobs were originally just amorphous chunks of data invented by Jim Starkey at DEC, who describes them as "the thing that ate Cincinnati, Cleveland, or whatever" from "the 1958 Steve McQueen movie". Later, Terry McKiever, a marketing person for Apol...
@ChrisS I heard about that, I went with this one, now I just gotta wait for docsis 3.0 to come to my area...
@BigHomie Personally I think large data belongs outside the database; like MS-SQL's FileStream objects... But I've seen people do dumb stuff with BLOB columns, like storing photos.
We have blob columns in our data
some hysterical raisins, some legitimate
@DennisKaarsemaker All my legitimate raisins are hysterical.
@BigHomie The SB6121 is just the prettier version of the SB6120.. No functional difference.
14:32
How is it only 10:30
@ChrisS yeah, I only knew that I wanted docsis 3.0, and it was the bestseller on amazon at the time so...
@cole Jimmy John's just dropped off a bunch of sampler subs - so I'm going to go ahead and call it noon
@ChrisS oh snap. Never had Jimmy John's but I've heard lots of good things.
Jimmy Johns makes decent sarnies
I love sandwiches.
14:33
I went there a lot when I was in seattle
@cole Rather plain sub sandwiches, but freaky fast and lots of people like plain...
I'm a plain sub kinda guy: turkey, cheese, lettuce and pickles - that's it.
Jimmy Johns is awesome

@cole Liquor - unless alcohol doesn't mix well with you.. then you're just f---ed.
@ChrisS been trying to cool it on the liquor - dad, uncle, aunt and grandmother are all alcoholics
Don't want to turn into that
dammit, now I'm hungry
and the wife doesn't get home for another 2.5 hours
14:37
@DennisKaarsemaker seriously - this smoothie is not a sandwich, dammit.
@cole sandwich smoothie!
Pretty sure that would be disgusting.

Is it reasonable price in dc for 4 servers 1.1$ a watt per month so if i have 4 servers assumably 400W each them mrc would be 1760$
Trying to figure out what kind of perms it needs to monitor AD - without giving it a domain admin account.
@ChrisS I have 14 bottles here. Instant tasting event :-)
is this a feasible pricing/cost?
@DennisKaarsemaker Damn... That's impressive
@DanilaLadner Not if you're just measuring the power capacity, not actual usage.
14:42
yeah, i do not think they charge actual usage though.
@DanilaLadner Power is included in my colo costs, but that's like $1.50 per kWh. That sounds mighty expensive unless they've got one hell of a UPS/Generator system.
just capacity
since its collocated within shared rack.
@DanilaLadner ISTR that $1.10 for a watt-month isn't totally outlandish.
@DanilaLadner hmm?
@DanilaLadner Then they're fucking you over hard
14:44
This is a financial colo.. the rules are different.
@DanilaLadner They can charge what they want... My recommendation is to set power caps on the servers. The power utilization will be pretty predictable on those Gen8's.
i did, and that the best price they came up with.
initially got 1.28$
@DanilaLadner Which facility is this?

so on 20A/120V i can have 4 dl380p hosted approx
14:53
@DanilaLadner ok
@BigHomie maybe so, but I would be going postal if I had lost 1/3 of my entire net worth in 24 hours.
@DanilaLadner I think you can fit more
i remember that when we had our own rack in equinix
that cost us 500$ a month 2 years ago
now they give me 1760$ a month for power also for 4 380DLs
i just think it is a little excessive.
@TheCleaner Well, since I'm in debt, I'd be jumping for joy if someone 'lost' 1/3 of what I owe.
@DanilaLadner why 120v? A 30A/220 would run much more efficient...or dare I say it...cleaner....
14:54
@TheCleaner Eh - still worth over $1/2 Billion - I could retire on that.
@TheCleaner yes, definitely.
@TheCleaner not an option. this is colo in a super-dense and expensive datacenter
But that is their standard rack
with 40A/120V i think
@ChrisS well sure...you'd still be able to get cheese on your Whataburger with that...
That's 3 x DL360p Gen8 + 1 Supermicro ZFS box in one of my data centers.
14:56
I remember for 40A/120V we paid 1900$ a month
@TheCleaner That's my life dream. To afford cheese and bacon on my burger.
@ewwhite gotcha...I'm surprised a colo wouldn't offer 220v power though...it's WAY cheaper for them than 120v.
and networking (firewall and switch)
for the whole ny4 rack
@TheCleaner the efficiency factor is less of an issue with newer data centers.
14:57
@ChrisS If I can retire owning a nice RV, gas money, and money for burgers...I'm golden.
2
so that's 4 high-end servers and switching, consuming 6 amps
IE, why you no display PDFs?!
sigh
@TheCleaner You want to drive around in an RV?
@ewwhite 800W for 4 of them?
how is that 6A?
dl380p in 120 is from 3A to 5.5A a pop.
@ewwhite I don't know electricity well enough, but I don't see how the newness would matter. Running equipment at a higher voltage would seem to always be more efficient and be a better price utility cost wise.
15:00
@DanilaLadner nah...
@ChrisS I would love to travel and possibly have a small house to come back to from time to time. Just take the wife on the road and travel around to all 50 states, etc. But that's a LONG way away...they'll probably have holodecks by then.
@TheCleaner Not the same.
We just had a printer spit out a good ream's worth of pages in landscape without provocation ...but it wasn't real landscape. Just printing sideways cutting half the page off.
@DanilaLadner I know he.net gives you a full 42U with 120V/15A of UPS power for something like $600/month.
It then started printing normally after I opened/closed the two trays...
15:03
Fully burdened watt-month cost of DC power… I have that number around here somewhere for a large customer...
@DanilaLadner A busy DL380p Gen8 is about 220 Watts. Most of mine hover around 120-150 Watts.

@MikeyB You have significant variances on that line. Your powerco must suck.
15:33
@Bob yeah, came across this on the net, also came across technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680595.aspx first
says the same thing kinda,
> The Local System account does not have any rights to access the network. When network access is necessary, Local System uses the account Domain\computername$
it uses the computer domain account, but then it says network service does the same thing
@BigHomie Either NetworkService or System can be used...they're inter-changable
NetworkService is better because it prevents the service from accessing privileged information that the SYSTEM account should only have access to
@Bob Yeah, the SYSTEM account is all-access, but it's not quite the same as root in *nix. You still can't directly access the kernel with SYSTEM - only hardware drivers can do that (the so-called ring 0)
@Bob It IS offensive and repugnant. (He's not for sale - merely for lease!)
@Jacob Yeah no kidding - inquiring now to see if they can come in and change the taps.
> Because most services don't need SYSTEM-level authority, Microsoft created the two new principals with less authority than SYSTEM and reconfigured many of the services on Windows 2003 and XP to run as either Local Service or Network Service.

I always considered drivers to correspond more to Linux kernel modules - they're effectively part of the kernel.
@ChrisS It's having an identity crisis if it is.
@NathanC System is all access as it gets in Windows... Windows itself has the ultimate authority, the Admin is 2nd in command. *nix systems that's the opposite. If you want to trash the memory, /dev/mem is happy to do that for you. Same with everything else, if root says so then *nix makes it so.
15:56
@ChrisS *nix: " I see you want to trash the memory. Very good sir, I'll get that done for you. Windows: " I see you want to trash the memory. I'm afraid you don't have authority to do that, but it appears that the kernel has already done that for you."
I wish we could do this here in hillsborough county
