@mossy yeah
current total system usage?
7gb of 7.5
@ScottPack correct me if i'm wrong..
The virtual field that you're looking at is the total mem that the specific process could use
@MattBear post again
@mossy what?
Como say what?

@mdlp0716 You'll fit in here.
@mdlp0716 oh yeah, what OS you running
and how big is your RAM
i think i have windows 8 and idk my RAM

@mdlp0716 Well we're not 14 and thus don't find simple puns like that too amusing

@MattBear Looks like a LAMP server to me. :)
@MarkHenderson ... :P
@freiheit yup, well SugarCRM, but yeah
I think @Jacob was about 14 when he started chatting in here
00:14
how old is he now??
We have thoroughly destroyed his soul and his faith in humanity over the past few years
I remember one day he changed his pic from 10 year old @Jacob to man @Jacob
@MarkHenderson isn't that what happens when you work in IT anyway?
@MattBear PHP and MySQL, so, yeah, from the server side it'll look an awful lot like drupal, wordpress, moodle, etc... You got innodb file per table on? You figured out how much memory tends to actually be used and tuned httpd to max out at that many processes? Loaded and enabled APC?
@MattBear Touche
@mossy My G+ photo is me when I was 9
I'm hoping it brings all the pedos to the yard
00:16
@MattBear Sometimes it doesn't take years...
@freiheit I haven't done anything besides have it handed to me... and been told "performance sucks"
too bad I don't have a soul to be destroyed. or faith in humanity to be crushed
I feel so left out
@strugee well then... now you just need a bike
@MattBear Is there an APC package installed? Maybe an apc.ini hiding out in some PHP conf directory?
00:17
@MattBear haha yeah (I actually do though)
Probably using default MySQL config.
IIRC that's set to use just about everything that you have by default.
@freiheit I do not believe so
@MattBear @MattBear on a typical unoptimized Apache/PHP/MySQL stack, the biggest performance gain for the least effort will be to enable a PHP code cache. APC or some Zend cache thing... (there's a few options)
@MattBear The next most likely candidate is MySQL stuff, but that should mostly just be handled with turning on the slow query log to verify if that's even a problem at all.
All that is, of course, assuming you're not seeing heavy swapping
that would make a good canonical question on Server Fault
"where should I start to improve the performance of an unoptimized LAMP stack"
@freiheit whats looking like the biggest problem to me.. is that the server is running all the time at 90%+ memory utilization
00:21
@MattBear As reported by what?
@MattBear Anything less than 100% is fine. Are you counting the "buffers and cache" as used?
@freiheit yeah
@ScottPack free
@MattBear don't
@MattBear What percentage is used if you look at the "-/+ buffers/cache" line?
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 6853 6517 336 0 1179 3349
-/+ buffers/cache: 1987 4865
Swap: 0 0 0
00:23
What those guys said. Look in the 'free' column under the buffers/cache line.
@strugee One problem with turning it into a canonical question is that the APC answer is huge for running a lot of a single app, but not very useful for running a ton of different apps.
4865 free
@MattBear So, you have 7GB, are using 2 and the OS has cached the 4GB worth of disk it actually touches?
00:26
@MattBear Without APC, ZendCache or something similar, you're reading and tokenizing/compiling ALL THE CODE for every hit against PHP. For a large PHP app (lots of libraries, etc) you can potentially shave a few seconds off the page load time with that kind of cache.
@MattBear Looks like you have nearly 5 GB free to me.
@MattBear Your memory is under 30% used. Use more! :)
@ScottPack :ok, so its the free cache I need to worry about?
@MattBear No. See how that line says "-/+ buffers/cache"?
@ScottPack yeah
00:28
@freiheit ah
That means that the free column is showing you how much is free + how much is in buffers/cache.
@ScottPack ohh ok
All of that is considered "soft allocated" or some shit like that. It's in use but will be purged if it's actually needed.
Unix like systems are good at saying, "Ohai guise! I see you have 16GB of total ram. Let me use every single drop of it for temp stuff if you aren't using it."
so all those apache servers that are started are unused then, just allocated?
@ScottPack wasted RAM is wasted power
00:30

Q: Why is Linux reporting "free" memory strangely?

user135199 This is a canonical question about how Unix operating systems report memory usage. Similar Questions: Server refuses to use swap partition Memory Usage in LINUX I have production server that is running Debian 6.0.6 Squeeze #uname -a Linux debsrv 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP S...

There's the canonical.
I think I knew that... lol
Wait, no. I don't like that. I'm pretty sure I gave a good answer on free as well.
so since this is one application, APC should help performance a lot?
That one needs to be the canonical.
@MattBear You need something like "apachectl status" to see which apache servers are actually in use at a given time.
00:32
Related, but here's another.
@MattBear APC could shave a second or two off of each PHP page load.
@MattBear Try using top to see the CPU usage of the httpd procs while you do something that's slow in SugarCRM. If it's something likely to be helped by APC, you'll see most of the CPU time going to a single httpd process and very little to mysqld.
Because your question looks unprofessional.
from what I'm told, each page loads multiple views, so multiple queries are being run each time a page is loaded.
00:48
Why is there a picture of a man in his underwear?
@cole cause he's sexy

Dumpin a 150GB MySQL table via mysqldump into a gzip pipe over SSH without using screen. Wish me luck.
@MarkHenderson DOOOOOOOOOOM
@MarkHenderson Yeah so why no screen?
Anyone here?
@KevinSoviero nope
What's up?
@Jacob Do you know where I can get sweat pants? I tried Kohl's, but they're considered seasonal, and it isn't the season for sweat pants.
@KevinSoviero Erm, walmart?
03:57
@Jacob Don't even ask
I mean you can get them at a fitness store but they'll be over priced.
@KevinSoviero Pretty much any department store that caters to cheap people
@MarkHenderson Too late.
@Jacob They wouldn't be seasonal there too?
@MarkHenderson Isn't Kohl's considered cheap?
@KevinSoviero He's from Australia, nothing is cheap.
03:59
@KevinSoviero I don't know what Kohls is
@MarkHenderson department store
@MarkHenderson kohls.com
I use sweat pants as pajamas, and my current pair have no knees, bottoms, or butt region left... No sure what goes on while I sleep.
@KevinSoviero I do too
Quite comfortable and warm
Anyway, I have to go take a shower before work tomorrow, night all!
pajamas... useless
I loathe them
04:08
@Jacob I am way too scared to ask...
@MarkHenderson about....
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson There was also that headline with a photo of a guy in a Guy Fawkes mask.
About what you sleep in if you don't wear pyjamas
@Bob Didn't see that one. I am avoiding most media
I will read SMH on my iPad but I skip most of the budget stuff
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson A very good idea :\
SMH is at least halfway decent.
Well, compared to this crap almost anything is decent.
@Bob Fuckin aye
My sister is getting pretty royally screwed by the budget. Her income is going down by $75/week and her daycare hours for her son are being cut from 15 to 10, so she can work 5 hours a week less on top of getting fewer benefits
(she is coming out of a messy marriage, so she's not exactly a huge burden on society)
So she'll have to pay more daycare fees to cover the gap so she can work to earn the money that the government took away from her
Bob
Bob
04:15
...fuck's sake
I still don't know what their excuse for doing this shit is.
Mr Abbott says she should just suck it up, but as a self-employed single mother who hasn't quite got her shit together after leaving her douchebag husband and he isn't paying any child support, and for the 15 years has paid her taxes and not been any burden, it's just not that simple
Bob
Bob
"fix the budget"? fuck off.
@Bob I know, right!
I'm mega pissed because I was forced to agree with Clive Palmer the other day
@MarkHenderson Wow, like a no win situation. How did she lose 75/wk
Thanks Tony, for making me agree with Clive.
@Jacob Government is cutting benefits to pretty much everyone
04:16
@MarkHenderson OH
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson oh yea, didn't he say he was going to run for PM?
now THAT was a WTF moment
<diety> help us all
@Bob bahaha yeah, the guy's a crackpot most of the time. But in his budget response he made more sense than Bill Shorten did
Too bad he doesn't get an official response :p
Basically we have the lowest debt per capita by percentage of GDP of anyone in the developed world
And most Australians don't really give a shit about having a surplus budget
We give a shit about being able to feed our kids
@MarkHenderson Does your government cover higher ed tuition?
Bob
Bob
...get rid of gov debt by pushing it onto individual citizens (and probably several times the amount too)
@Jacob they did
now? kinda. maybe. sorta.
@Bob in any form?
04:19
@Jacob Sort of. They give you a no-interest loan to pay for it (indexed at inflation). But they want to end that scheme, transfer everyone on that scheme to an interest-style plan, and un-cap university admission fees
Bob
Bob
they want to deregulate uni fees too
I mean I'm looking at needing 100k
Bob
Bob
@Jacob that's going to be a very real possibility here in a couple of years
@Jacob They want to do that here. Currently university fees are regulated, but if they de-regulate it in 2016 that's exactly what will happen
Which means that my son might decide that university is not worth the excessive debt
(which is OK with me. I need an electrician in the family)
@MarkHenderson If I could... I'd be an HVAC mechanic.
Bob
Bob
04:21
@MarkHenderson once again, I have no idea what their reasoning is
seems like they're trying to emulate the US in all the worst ways possible
@Bob Well we now have former PMs saying that we should cut ties with the US because they're basically fucking us over for no benefit
@MarkHenderson How so?
@Jacob Dunno didn't really read it but basic gist was: We fight your wars, we back your trade deals, we side with you, but you don't really do much for us
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson well, the trade deals aren't exactly in our favour. or even neutral.
@MarkHenderson I guess the idea is they'll protect us if we're attacked, that kinda thing
bleh.
@Bob Yeah but if Tomorrow When The War Began is to be believed, only the Kiwis will come to our rescue :P
Oh yeah thats why we need $14bn of fighter planes too, right
04:26
@MarkHenderson Whose going to attack?
Because we're constantly at threat of being invaded by like, the Timorise or something
Maybe New Guineans will invade us on bamboo rafts
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson the invasion of the boat people!
sad thing is, I could actually see that being a headline -_-
@Bob Right! Yes instead of turning them back or sending them to prison we'll just explode them
Works for me
05:08
Just got an EOL notice for HP LeftHand for if you're running their OS version of < LeftHand OS 2014 - but of course, all the lefthand stuff returns numbers like 9.1 and 10.5
Now I have to look up what number "2014" relates to
Goddamnit
Baha and they EOL non-2014 versions of the OS, but then their product page has a huge notice saying you can't install 2014 on G2 devices because of a crippling bug from November 2013
Fuck you HP
5
G'day
05:32
morning
05:49
@MarkHenderson they abandoned that Lefthand platform
@ewwhite The G2 platform?
Super sad
Just Lefthand in general.
Really?
What is their SAN offering then?
because: 3par
Wait; they bought LeftHand, integrated their line, then bought 3Par and dumped LeftHand?
That... well that fucks me over
05:54
They have a 3Par offering that cannibalized the sales of their higher-end Lefthand units
They're still selling LeftHand units though
@MarkHenderson well, yeah... but the 3par is nicer/better/faster
@ewwhite But I can't integrate it with our existing P4000 shelves :(
Also: Yellow. Sexy.
HOLY SHIT
QR489A	HP 3PAR STORESERV 7200 16GB BASE SAN KIT						0	$48633
I'm not fucking made of money
That's 10x the price of an empty P4000 shelf with a 10GB upgrade
I think I will just stick with the LeftHand offering until they EOL the entire product line
they have many variants of the 3par
basically starting at 30k
My reseller only has the FC ones listed
Including this fucker
QW979A	HP 3PAR STORESERV 10800 RACK CONFIG BASE						0	$265236
05:59
well, it's high-end SAN gear
@ewwhite Yeah "starting" at $30k is more than our entire SAN has cost up to date
I'm confused by this job ad... a firm in Chicago that I've never heard of. Can you tell what they actually do?

Posted on Careers 2.0 on May 19, 2014

looks like they do hosting and setups of opensource crm/ecommerce
and probably lots of integration
@pauska no real linkedin presence... weird glassdoor reviews. But I do see mention of SugarCRM, which is a Chicago company... I think
SugarCRM/Magento and IBM social something
looks like they blend it all together into a single solution
06:06
yeah... Strange, I wonder who uses their solution
You're not good at browsing web sites, are you :)
@pauska it's not a very good site
also true
I just saw the client list... and I don't recognize any of the firms
well, except for City of Chicago
anywho, I don't need a job :)
@MichaelHampton you about? I think serverfault.com/questions/597137/… deserves AU
06:10
I'm actually doing some R&D to help spec a solution for $lastjob.
06:29
@basil can you ping me when you're around mate?
06:43
Morning

Morning
morning
I hate how cheap godaddy ssl certs are
makes it hard to convince the people above me that I need to pay double for ssl certs at another vendor..
07:27
I am at a Python course
Husband said yesterday "Does that mean we need to get divorced, if you start with Python and I stick with Perl?"
I told him not to worry, I'm bi.
3
@pauska just remove the godaddy root cert from all their browsers :)
@JennyD once you go python, you never go back!
@DennisKaarsemaker I don't get the point in being monolingual like that :-P
@JennyD you'd understand if you were american :)
> My guts tell me you have WordPress, Drupal or similar heavy-weight PHP application installed and now you are wondering why your Apache does not serve out ONE HUNDRED BILLION requests per second.
made me smile
07:42
I'm the only one here who does not have a windows laptop. Coincidentally, I'm also the only one whose python installation works from the start.
What OS do yo use ?
MacOSX
Morning all
08:14
@Chopper3 hai thar Phill
@LucasKauffman Howdy, all well?
@Chopper3 yea all good ^^ yourself?
@LucasKauffman Yeah, been doing lots of exercise of various kinds recently - been enjoying that
@Chopper3 how much are you down now? from when you started
@Chopper3 ah sweet, I should do that too :(
08:19
@pauska about 83lb/38kg
@Chopper3 wow
what's your secret?
@LucasKauffman time+balanced diet+regular exercise-booze-read meat-crap food
@Chopper3 mmm but I like beer :(
@LucasKauffman me too but I literally can't have any more
I still have about 200 bottles in my cellar
@Chopper3 aah health issue?
08:22
@Chopper3 ace man! good work
@LucasKauffman yeah, I had cancer about a year ago, the chemo fucked my liver/kidneys - so no more booze for me
@Chopper3 yea I remember, sucks :(
@pauska still got a little way to go and it's not coming off as quickly but yeah, feeling great
09:17
coworker just complained because I deleted entries in /etc/hosts pointing to some *.domain.com
And I mean _literally_ `*.domain.com`
markdown was created by Kim Jong Un

literally - `*.domain.com
Needs something more than space between the markdown
...and within 2 hours, I get the first significant-whitespace-bug

Is docker the latest $thing - lots of qestions turning up about it atm
@Iain It is the current Kewlest Thing Ever
@JennyD seems that way
@Iain it's the latest "I don't like config management, so let's just copy VM's around" thing.
10:33
@DennisKaarsemaker it certainly seems to be a thing right now
Just came across a "Best Practices" document with the following remark in the "General advice" section
> For best performance, a QlikView server ought to be restarted once in a while in order to free memory.
-_-
11:25
Shit, I keep leaving this up
11:56
@Iain it's an expansion of my LXC and containers interest. I think Docker is making people happy.
@DennisKaarsemaker Do you think it's a bad idea?
@ewwhite what does it add except overhead?
@DennisKaarsemaker Well, i don't know about docker specifically, but there doesn't seem to be much overhead with containers.
@ewwhite so what do they add?
@ewwhite My comment was about the front page not chat
Isolation. Better use of hardware resources
12:04
lxc/docker's isolation is a farce
@DennisKaarsemaker well, no.. it's not secure
I'd rather go full virtualization if better hardware use were something I care about
My comment on the recent blog post got an answer - bets on how long it takes to get sorted ...
I'm doing this to avoid using single-host VMware installs for lightweight services
@ewwhite why not simply put all services on the host?
Don't say isolation. 'cause docker doesn't give you that
12:08
@DennisKaarsemaker granular control, separate IP addresses
@DennisKaarsemaker There is s-virt capable docker
easier to use than raw cgroups
@ewwhite granula how? And you can do multiple ip adresses per host you know :P
@dawud if that's as user friendly as selinux, nobody will use it
I still disable selinux everywhere
@DennisKaarsemaker I leave it on but have a check high on the list for it when debugging
sounds like FreeBSD jails :P
12:12
or solaris zones
there's a use for it
@ewwhite serverfault.com/questions/597189/… you can probably give em a lower quote
high pricing
Refund finally came in. Now to watch it vanish!
12:32
Sup
@cole paying bills...lol.
@NathanC hear that. Going to do my expense report now
Tax return finally came in so I paid off one of my credit cards..
12:48
Morning all!
@NathanC I tried to file a tax return, and would have gotten back a little under $2,000, but my father already had claimed me, so I didn't get anything back... :(
@KevinSoviero Oi, that stinks.
@Jacob - I think I've found a car...wasn't it you I was discussing with? Or @NathanC?
