OK, GoDaddy's "abuse" department are complete morons.
The Domain Name Abuse Department has responded to your inquiry, details of which are described below:

Support Staff Response
Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting the GoDaddy Domain Name Abuse Department.

GoDaddy's Spam and Abuse Team have checked the email message you forwarded to us as well as the complete message headers but have been unable to determine exactly how this message is connected to a GoDaddy customer.

It does appear that you yourself are a GoDaddy customer and may be simply forwarding this message to us because you are utilizing GoDaddy's email servic
Of course, the whois record for 72.167.234.244 clearly names GoDaddy as the IP address owner...
@RyJones Where'd you end up?
@RyJones country.
Anonymous
@ewwhite do you like my luv card
@PatoSáinz nope
Anonymous
@ewwhite do you like ZFS?
00:17
@PatoSáinz ZFS is okay
Something is fundamentally wrong with a Mexican restaurant named Shorty's.
@MichaelHampton I'd rather go to "Shorty's" than "Chunky's" (used to have one across the street from work)
@freiheit What was wrong with Chunky's?
@MichaelHampton Well, for starters, the name is too close to "blowing chunks" or the shape you get if you eat too many burritos, neither of which makes me want to eat someplace. Also, the food just wasn't that good and seemed to give people the runs...
@freiheit Aha, I see the problem now.
Um, if you've got 300 GB of email, you're doing something wrong. And yes, I mean a single user with 300 GB of email.
@ewwhite ZFS is not ready for Grandma!
00:34
@MichaelHampton nope
@MarkHenderson :(
@Andrew The FAQ is quite eye opening
@MarkHenderson I think for the first time in about ever I might share that on Facebook.

Q: Why should I need a tweak to force VMware ESXi 5 to sync time with Windows NTP server

Jimm ChenI'm plagued by a seemingly simple but actually troublesome problem, so I ask for help here. Symptom I installed an instance of VMware ESXi 5.1 inside VMware Workstation to learn about various ESXi features. Let me call it vESXi machine. My problem running vESXi is, everytime I suspend the vESXi...

ESXi inside VMWare Workstation
Which he suspends
And then he uses Microsoft NMon rather than WireShark
Also: Blaming microsoft for something that's not really their fault
netmon is nicer than wireshark in some ways.
also, ntp in a VM is not supported
@RyJones Interesting
I can carry on about it, but net net, not supported for good reason
@RyJones Milky way earth?
01:35
@JoelESalas the speed of light delays between our messages should tell you that
hmm how to make it another 90 minutes awake so I can give my cat his insulin
@RyJones Set your alarm for 90 minutes time and then go to sleep?
@MarkHenderson Some people literally cannot use alarms, I am one of them
@MarkHenderson not sure that will work. I might order a pizza delivered for then
@JoelESalas Hey there.
@ewwhite What up
01:49
@MarkHenderson Microsoft's NTP service being utter shit is their fault.
And the latest versions of MIT Kerberos no longer require clocks to be synced at all. It's going to be really fun when Microsoft pulls that code.
@MichaelHampton Yes but if your read the scope of their NTP not designed for high accuracy
You can't exactly blame someone for doing exactly what it says on the tin
Anonymous
I love using a dedicated ntpd for my windows workstation
I don't know what y'all are doing that need microsecond accuracy between workstations
@MarkHenderson No, I suppose not...
user image
2
@MarkHenderson Who said anything about microsecond? It can't even maintain one second accuracy!
@MichaelHampton What are you doing that needs per-second accuracy?
I'm happy if all of the computers on the network are all set to the same damn timezone
And somehow don't have the british keyboard layout selected
01:57
@MarkHenderson Among other things, synchronizing a radio broadcast with the satellite uplink and the radio stations picking it up.
@MichaelHampton Ok fine so you have a reasonable excuse. But I suspect you're also not using Windows to do that
Anonymous
what the hell did i just create
@PatoSáinz No idea it's stuck on 0%
@MarkHenderson Actually radio uses Windows extensively... too extensively. And yes, it's all third party NTP because it's damn well necessary.
Anonymous
01:59
@MarkHenderson your internet is slow (actually mine also glitches out, i tried refreshing)
Anonymous
is there even a good SDR for windows?
@PatoSáinz Contrary to how I bitch a lot, my internet here is actually fine for most things. It's just latency to the US that kills it, but unless someone adjusts the speed of light, that aint gunna change
@PatoSáinz I've seen some pretty neat SDR stuff in the homebrew market.
But anyone who does homebrew has a neckbeard, so yeah
Probably not windows
@MarkHenderson I shave my neck
Anonymous
If only scientists got their sh*t together and said lightspeed is 1/0, we could have faster internet
anyway, there is a fix that would make Windows a first-rate NTP implementation, but Microsoft hasn't added it to the default serial port implementation. (PPS support)
you can compile your own serial.sys, but you can't use it on modern systems due to code signing
02:02
You can't sign your own driver?
depends on the system, but it would mean that everyone that wanted to use PPS would need to be up-to-speed on the whole compile-sign-install loop
hardly user friendly
I'm going to start tftp as a service, so that you can get log files off Cisco devices without wanting to punch yourself in the face. Sent to tftp, get an email
Anonymous
I have a whole stack of home routers. Not one of them has the factory firmware on it.
@JoelESalas Just checking in.
02:11
Shenzhen PCB & Soup Noodle got back to me - they use custom firmware.
@RyJones I imagine a determined sysadmin could muddle through it. I did manage to install Visual Studio successfully once.
@MichaelHampton I know it can be done, I just don't think it's going to get you much.
@RyJones Probably not. Just throwing in a GPS unit would be less costly than dedicating a sysadmin to keeping that sort of patchwork together, I think.
was this discussed?

@MichaelHampton next/next/next/next/next/wait................./finish isn't that hard
02:14
@ewwhite That is what we're discussing
@MichaelHampton gps unit has the same issue, actually
@ewwhite yesa
43 mins ago, by Mark Henderson
This guy is a fucking crack head
since the GPS unit uses PPS for top-of-second signalling
02:14
Start from there
@RyJones I can get sufficient accuracy from public NTP servers. So I don't really need it :)
@MichaelHampton looks like Meinberg is handing out a signed driver, regardless
@MarkHenderson nuts
02:57
@MarkHenderson still on?
@ewwhite Yep
Another 2.5 hours till quitting time
\o
@mossy A bed on a 60 degree angle

@MarkHenderson ever hire a decorator?
03:01
Waste of time and money?
@ewwhite Nah I haven't
My wife has quite a flair for that thing, and I also get advice from my interior decorator cousin
but you've been through remodels/staging etc.
Yep
Three of them
my wife has no skills in that department.
@mossy You'll learn more about Linux by reading the SF front page for a week. Especially what not to do.
03:02
@MichaelHampton bahh.
@MarkHenderson it's sad... our new home is really... meh. Empty.
Computers are hard
@ewwhite I know the feeling. WHen we bought our place, it was run down and sad
My wife and I have pretty traditional tastes. We like modern, but we don't do things like feature walls or anything that won't look good in 10 years
I have a friend who has a flair for it... but she's seriously costly... and I wanted to get a feel for costs.
@ewwhite You need a larger dog.
03:03
@ewwhite We've spent about $15,000 on our place so far. Our labour costs are much higher than yours probably are though.
We had a painter in for two weeks to do the whole house - walls, ceiling, trim. That was the first thing. Crisp, clean colours
@MichaelHampton Nah, no new dog.
All white, but different kinds of white
@MarkHenderson but it was worth it?
@ewwhite Every dollar
The previous owners had home-made feature walls where the paint was flaking because it hadn't been sealed properly
Also, bright pink and bright green "feature" walls, etc
So it was nice to remove those
CompTIA Healthcare IT Technician
03:05
Second thing we did was the floors. We didn't spend much there - just got engineered wood to replace the laminate wood ones
It really makes you feel like you own the place too, once you start making your own mark on it
@MarkHenderson we don't need much structural stuff... but seriously, just some adult furniture and better style.
Otherwise I feel like it's just a house that someone else has designed and you've just bought. I don't really feel connected to it until I've changed it somehow
@ewwhite You need house porn
My wife gets a lot of inspiration from younghouselove.com
we use houzz.com
plenty of pr0n... but I don't know how to put it together.
@ewwhite That looks like a great site
I use ikea.com
03:08
@ewwhite Well, I don't think there's any shame in taking a room and copying it verbatim
You have a lot more space than we do though. I have maybe 150m2 for the entire house
200m2 tops if you include the converted garages and laundry spaces
I would definitely start with a fresh paint job if you really want to change the feel of the place though. At our hardware store all the paint providers have largish catalogues of schemes to flip through. We got one from Dulux, British Paints, Taubmans, etc
well, nothing on the walls here... lots of missing furniture.
And we chose one that we liked from the catalogue and didn't change anything about it - just gave it to the painter and said "do that"
a fresh coat of paint is the cheapest upgrade you can get
patch the walls with one time, sand a little, prime and paint it
03:11
@Andrew They're the printers of the beverage world
@RyJones Damn straight. My wife did our front door when she was 6 months pregnant. Anyone can do it.
Although........ gotta be careful as our previous owners obvious did DIY and all the paint was flaking
it's the time commitment...
and the scale/cost of this house.
I wouldn't want to fuck things up
I didn't say the homeowner should do it
I am going to fap to houzz tonight though
Their bathrooms are to die for
03:12
I'll do slight electrical stuff... and mechanical things.
but they can, and it's cheap enough to fix
@RyJones No, I guess you didn't
If you take a taxi in Chicago, pay cash.
@ewwhite Otherwise if painting isn't your thing, I'd do kitchen or bathroom
a bad paint job is easy to fix, unless you're moving in to a house after it's owned by Iranians
03:12
We had the most beautiful bathroom at our old place. We did it ourselves and I really miss it
@RyJones that's racist!
Current bathroom is a bit scummy, but we can't afford to change it right now
@ewwhite dude... Iranians is not a race
@RyJones it's a recurring theme.
I want this shower
03:14
@MarkHenderson but is there a point where you're like, "I have $20k burning a hole in my pocket...."
I grew up in a city with lots of Iranian expats (well, stuck there after the fall of the Shah) and they always wanted houses in these eye-popping colors. like safety orange paints or teflon infusing industrial shit because it was BRIGHT AND GLOWING
you try to talk them out of it, but no, they really, really liked colors that would blind a mortal
@RyJones no need to explain... I understand that SF chat is a place of intolerance.
:)
@ewwhite If I had $20k burning a hole in my pocket, I would put it in an offset account untill I really needed it
But if I had $20k, I would paint and do the main bathroom and ensuite
Because they're my personal indulgences
And $20k isn't enough to do a kitchen the way I would want it done
I don't give a fuck, I thought it was funny you try to tell them "you'll have to remove the drywall after we put this paint on if you want to change colors because it's a paint used in prisons and hospitals to make blood and urine barriers" and it was full speed ahead
"you know I've never used two part epoxy paint outside of a prison" did not deter them
Although you can buy this at Sherwin Williams, you should not use it at home: protective.sherwin-williams.com/tools/…
03:20
@RyJones I saw a really nice glass-style epoxy coating for wooden furniture. It was $60/tin and covered 0.5m2
expensive
I wanted it for my desk, but at that price the epoxy was going to cost more than the rest of the desk
This is good stuff (that is OK in a home): protective.sherwin-williams.com/…
@MarkHenderson I'm trying to imagine what that was
most epoxy coatings I dealt with would dry yellowish and hazy if they weren't tinted
I just found that then; it's pretty much the same product
But cheaper
Much cheaper
Ah actually not that much cheaper
$100/litre
reads like a urethane
@MarkHenderson "I only drink certified genuine OEM HP inkjet printer ink. It's much cheaper than Keuring." - Slashdot
@Andrew not sure what you're pointing out, but the bit about epoxy only on metals is not correct
you could use it on almost anything, but you wouldn't get much out of it
03:27
@RyJones so I assume "truck bed liner"-type paints are epoxy?
@Andrew almost certainly
Didn't mythbusters determine that that stuff is bomb proof?
if properly applied, it can make CMU stand up after a blast, yes
so compared to bare CMU walls, it's awesome
fucking fucking fuck java fuck.

breeze block, cinder block
03:28
> The team built wood-frame and cinderblock walls, one treated and one untreated of each type, and placed Buster behind each before setting off a C-4 charge 5 ft (1.5 m) in front. The untreated walls were badly damaged and threw large amounts of debris on Buster, while the treated ones showed no damage and protected him.
yes, as I said. People were using Rhino Liner in OIF I for that purpose
@RyJones BTW any idea why there are so many pictures & so much info on "firestops" on Wikipedia articles about anything to do with construction?
@Andrew ah not sure I understand the question. there are a lot of firestop types, maybe that's why there are a lot of pictures
well, it looks like GLASSCOAT is an epoxy, I wonder what they're using
@RyJones so you can be reading almost any article on building, construction, chemical whatever and suddenly a "use in firestops" section or bunch of "here be firestops" pictures appear
@Andrew maybe they all come from the same source textbook?
03:34
@RyJones the pictures all seem to be taken by some German Canadian guy, maybe that's just his thing
firestopping is a very specific use, not sure how interesting it is for the general public
@Andrew maybe he's really into fire stops. seems strange
> Born in Germany, residing in Canada, having worked in testing, fire protection, product certification, sales, marketing, construction most of my life.
well there's the answer
@RyJones there's something for everyone on Wikipedia
@Andrew indeed, there are probably multiple somethings for everyone
03:36
@MarkHenderson you could DIY it if you had the right stuff - probably fibreglass epoxy (i.e. not styrene)
I bet you could go into your version of Sherwin Williams or Porter and tell them what you wanted to do
@strugee after 10 years I'm pretty much immune to wikiwalks. on Wikipedia at least. TVTropes, on the other hand...
@Andrew are you serious? that's incredible
it took me ~50 Wikipedia tabs to finally get a real solution (i.e. Read it Later, now Pocket)
@strugee if you throw me a Wikipedia page I'll close it when done. if I specifically go looking for something, I might go for a walk.
03:42
@Andrew I repeat: that's incredible
@Andrew I just about went for a walk with that one
@strugee TV tropes will ruin your life
.... fascinating.
hah. the "are you in there" part reminds me of xkcd.com/456
03:59
Who wants some clickbait!?
@Andrew ooooh mememememe
;)
"Linus hates GTK" - not really, GTK lacks end user documentation and the devs can't communicate how to write applications with it
So, basic networking question: can I send a packet to a device and ask it "can you route this for me"?
@Andrew yeah but to be fair GTK+ is getting better wrt developer documentation
I mean I'm not pretending that it's good but it's getting better
04:18
@Andrew Not really, routers either route or they don't
@strugee so Linus & Dirk Hohndel (Intel) were working on this and in asking GTK devs "how do we do X" it was either "go away" or "we don't know either"
@MichaelHampton so my pfSense works now. Odd.
@Andrew Now if you can log in to the router, you can ask it what it would do with some traffic.
@Andrew I meant the HTML docs, not the people. I don't have any experience with the people
@MichaelHampton yeah, I thought i had a situation where the router had a static route set but wouldn't route traffic there... and now it does. Very odd.
Something about an option I had to enable to get it to work, only now it seems to work and I can't remember what the option was
my LAN devicces couldn't see my MPLS network devices and vice-versa unless there was a static route added to the LAN devices via the ISP router. but now it works.
@MichaelHampton interesting, ICMP traffic passes but TCP doesn't - so presumably it's teh firewall blocking it then
04:36
Fuck - cisco.com download is going at 32KB/sec. And I'm downloading from the DC.
04:54
... ok. so the ISP router doesn't have a route back through me. because it's the local subnet...
and yet I can route the other way. Waht?
05:17
I think I missed fun.
05:29
@ShaneMadden Just some punk talking about how he wants to bash in the SE community manager's head
Pissed off his Area 51 proposal got closed I think
All his proposals as far as I can tell were pretty shit
"How to customise windows" and bullshit like that
@MarkHenderson This seems like an odd place to complain about that.
@ShaneMadden Thats what I said
@ShaneMadden: He's typing in all caps. Its clearly a sign he's not rational
Anyhoo
Home time
Cya all
@MarkHenderson Later
@JourneymanGeek But like, why here?
05:35
@ShaneMadden: Thats a good question. Maybe he just likes being mocked ;p
@ShaneMadden near the top of the list of chat rooms, presumably
@strugee Ahh yeah, fair enough
05:56
@MarkHenderson what community?
@FalconMomot: all of them
@JourneymanGeek I mean, what all got rejected?
06:20
I guess a windows customization site would be a sure flop
you mean even if it wasn't closed as a dup of SU?
because no one cares about Windows customization?
because it's basically impossible to do?
I realize that this line of questioning has become increasingly bigoted against Windows users; I should stop
hmm? no, it's just that the topic is extraordinarily narrow and would be best served by SU (for nonprofessional stuff) and SF (for professional stuff).
that is totally without prejudice to windows.
ugh, why the fuck is it necessary that living and travel be so damn costly?
$500 every round trip to the east coast to go see my girlfriend. $350 every time I need a round trip to my hometown, plus like $100 of cab fare (and I live next to the airport when I am in that town!). $1000 a month for a tiny apartment in either city.
@FalconMomot gotcha.
06:59
Anyone know the internals of how pfSense translates config files to web and vice versa?
Need to work out how to manually undo something if I break it, which means working out how it writes the config file...
07:13
right!
that seems to have not broken anything, yet
07:24
hmm, will try that again tomorrow
G'day
@Andrew If at first you don't break anything try, try, and try again :)
@Iain hmm, yes
morning @Iain
How's it going ?
dear Mr Shuttleworth, would it be too much to ask that SSH server can be installed?
apparently I'm expecting far too much from a livecd
07:42
it goes well. busy. annoyed with the review audit.
lately I'm getting rep pretty much only from my canonical DDoS Q&A
I think I helped close something as a dupe of that recently. I'm having a dull patch at the moment I think I'll stop playing the front page when I hit 60k
Morning
@Iain there is never anything answerable on the front page >.>

good morning
just wanted to ask if someone is familiar with AppFabric
07:50
> ... is a set of integrated technologies that makes it easier to build, scale, and manage Web and composite applications that run on IIS.
that ?
no9
no9
yea sort of ... its caching mechanism as far as i know...
but thats what it says in description
Can't help but it seems more like a programmery thing
no9
no9
well ... it is (client side) but...
i was given the task to migrate something from 2003 server to 2012
and on 2003 server was 1.0 version, while clients had this installed: microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4706
since I know squat about this I am unable to find 2012 equivalent for clients...
just came here to ask if (by any luck) someone knows anything about this...
so good: asking questions on the site.
morning
07:59
Here there are five people active, one of them being you. None of the rest is here to answer support questions. You'll be more likely to find someone who actually knows it and is willing to spend the time to answer if you ask on serverfault.com.
also, asking a question while looking for answers is a good way to collect your thoughts.
About half the questions I try to ask never get asked ;p
no9
no9
@JennyD @JourneymanGeek thanks for the headsup, but I already know that. The problem is that I have to run in like 5 minutes and I hoped to get this info before leave... thanks anyway
@no9 As a general rule, when you enter a new chat room it's considered polite to check out the basic information of that chat room. Here it's in the top right corner.
hmm
a massively gay friend of mine (who may or may not want me) wants to see if I want to time-share an apartment here
hopefully it doesn't end up being too awkward.
"may or may not"? Has he given any indication of being interested?
because I've shared an apartment with a woman without awkwardness, because there were no pantsfeelings for eachother... if one (only one) of us had had any it might have gotten awkward
08:13
@JennyD weak indications, which is why I'm considering it.
I guess on the up side I don't have to worry about him finding anything untoward and judging me for it :)
and it certainly makes things easier to afford... at least nicer, if not cheaper.
(I'm looking for a broomcloset in which to stuff a futon and a tiny desk or something... I try to spend as little time in my place as possible)
@FalconMomot As a general rule I think you should talk about what you expect from one another, and in the process you can make clear your own lack of interest. E.g. if you talk about bringing people home and what rules apply for sleepovers if any, that's a good place to bring it up without making it a Huge Issue
you know honestly I wouldn't mind paying $15000 for a camping lot on Bainsbridge Island or something
@JennyD yeah... probably will need to be chatted about
roommates suck, but even on $100k a year it's hard to afford two residences on your own.
and flying all the time
@FalconMomot captainawkward.com/category/roommates might have something helpful
@JennyD that is a thing?
gwar!
Captain Awkward is bloody awesome!
08:17
also
I can feel the magnetic field from backlit keyboards now
@FalconMomot fab - getting more sensitive ?
@Iain by the week.
:)
I wonder if captain awkward has anything to say about this dilemma... there is this coworker of mine who is slightly older, but otherwise extremely similar to me... so similar in fact that he has already done a bunch of stuff I plan to do, and I think I'm pissing him off by "copying".
(the first response to the magnets was something like "must you do everything sirus does?")
fucking high-school-like drama and politics. drives me mental.
people who are all 25 or 35 shouldn't act like this
nope, nothing.
@FalconMomot the answer here would be "sure, as long as what he does is a good thing why shouldn't I learn from him?"
08:28
@JennyD haha
@FalconMomot Seriously - if there's some grumbling just give them a wide-eyed innocent look and say that of course you're learning from your coworkers, isn't that what everyone is supposed to do?
nothing to do with work; it's all personal
Ah, then it might be slightly different.
"I'm not copying him; it's not my fault he has a time machine and is preemptively copying me!"
lol
pretty much
funny thing is, I don't think I'm really annoying him, so much as I am annoying his fiancee.
Well. If they have a problem, they can do either of three things. They can talk to you directly in which case you answer that it's actually things you'd already planned and that you were glad to see that the same thing worked for Sirus.
Or they can just shut up and be adult about it.
Or they can be passive-agressive jerks, in which case you ignore them and then you get to be the adult in the group.
08:33
yeah, pretty much
that is exactly my strategy.
and waiting until the people who care about that BS come off it.
stupid everyone
There isn't much more you can do - you can't live your own life in a way so as not to annoy them.
death to people
yeah, exactly
The problem is on their side, not yours.
one doesn't own copyright on such things
If "interested friends" talk to you about it, then the answer is the same - "sorry they feel that way; in fact those are things I'd already been thinking of and obviously I can't go around and not live my life the way I want because Sirus has also had the same thought earlier"
Plus, he's a coworker, not a friend. You haven't chosen specifically to be around him. You have just ended up at the same work place. The fact that they've employed two people with similar interests and ideas of how to live just means they're good at selecting for a cultural fit.
08:38
yeah, that does explain the freak coincidence some.
I think I'll say something like that if I'm sober enough to remember to when next it comes up
@FalconMomot Good luck :-)
@JennyD ty
hmm, does markdown not do those? it used to I thought
The Feds are suing sprintf? Sweet! About time they got serious about secure code...er...wait a second...
aah, that's how
