When they lost a huge tender because their tender submission was a single page document, they just sued the government until they got their tender awarded anyway
@MarkHenderson: oh, and the government owns big chunks of the big three telcos ;p
@MarkHenderson: o0
More cyclists than in Portland?
crazy talk
How many wheels are you using as your metric?
00:01
@JourneymanGeek They own parts of all three?
That's a bit weird
@MarkHenderson: 2 of them were spun off from government projects
You don't normally invest in two companies that are competitors.
@freiheit Could that SSL Cert have a longer company name?
@JourneymanGeek Aahh
@Wesley If you're paying for EV certification, you make it worth every dollar
00:02
Singtel was the government run phone company, starhub is the combination of our third ISP, and the government owned cable company
@freiheit Not enough unicycles.
@Wesley Also, it's valid for less than one year
Weird
basically the government loves to set up basic infrastructure under a quasi government corporation, then spin/sell it off.
Honorable Royal League of the Gentleman and Gentlewoman Cyclists in their Most Noble Pursuit of Cranktastic Pedalpushing
00:03
@JourneymanGeek Profiting handsomely for a few senators I'm sure
@MarkHenderson: Not entirely odd
@Wesley They do business as the first name, but are legally incorporated as the second name.
@JourneymanGeek Any opportunity for an American consultant to come in? =P
@MarkHenderson: oh, it probably helps smooth out the fuckups the government investment bodies do
@freiheit DBA: Cycle Ltd
@freiheit I want my quads to bend light around them.
00:04
@JourneymanGeek That's ok. Our politicians use their government-issued credit cards for whores
@Wesley: lol
So, Squat erryday, century every other. That's reasonable, right?
@MarkHenderson: they may play monopoly with our money, but they arn't using our money for their purposes ;p
Ladies like thighs that enter a room two minutes before my head does, right?
@Wesley Make sure to include some 20% grade climbs in those centuries.
00:05
@freiheit You know, we do have some intense hill riding around here.
@Wesley Put together a route with numbers like this one: ridewithgps.com/routes/1287544
@freiheit WTF
Was that a one day ride?!
@freiheit Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope
@Wesley Can't you just pedal faster by changing gears?
@ScottPack Or being chased by a dog.
00:08
I know people who wouldn't even drive that far in a single day
@joel WUT.
Two thousand foot elevation gain. Sheeeee-it.
@Wesley 8 people got it done in under 12 hours last year...
@freiheit How on earth.
00:08
@Wesley: or worse, getting chased by a driving dog.

@Wesley You missed a digit. Twenty-thousand.
Does that dog have its license?
@ScottPack License to ill!
00:10
Seriously.
@Wesley I saw a comic about that
@Wesley They cheat a little by picking the longest day of the year for the ride, if that helps any.... I think it's dark when they start and when they finish, too...
@freiheit I would imagine that sunlight and visibility from drivers is important.
@freiheit Should do a double century in Alaska.
00:11
@ScottPack I'm pretty sure he has a dog licence, does that count?
Running, but probably applies to cycling too
@Wesley They start with lights and arrange to pick up lights again at one of the stops.
@Andrew Nice
@freiheit Revolights!
@freiheit Paragraphs!!
@MarkHenderson Dipthongs!
00:12
Also, most of those people are in their 40s and 50s
@Wesley Apparently somebody had that idea
@freiheit Oh really? How'd that work out? Seems like a lot of weight to be kewl on a double century.
@MarkHenderson It takes a few decades to become insane enough to do it.
Also:
> On the weekend of August 26-27, 1995, Santa Rosa Cycling Club member Trent Norlund, accompanied by personal support van, became the first person to "double" the Terrible Two course, completing the twice-around, 400-mile, 32000' ride in 38:39.
^^^ Seriously fucking crazy beyond fucking crazy. ;)
@freiheit Non-stop?!
I would struggle to even stay awake for that long
@MarkHenderson I don't know any more details on that particular bout of madness, but typically they do have various rest stops where they stop for a few minutes. Maybe even a 15 minute nap...
00:23
what about that brain damaged lady that proved long distance running is all mental, not physical?
@freiheit holy shit
I'll take a single anecdote and expand it to cover the entirety of a sport
@RyJones It is totally all mental, assuming you've got the right genetics and have trained enough that you can keep running until sleep deprivation hits (as long as you keep eating and drinking enough to make up what you're burning and perspiring).

I know, I worked with an ultra marathoner that was more than happy to spill about it

@pauska Have you ever built a terminal server in kiosk mode?
00:38
@ewwhite Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?
I need a minimal RDS server setup that erases changes after logoff.
00:53
So...TWC apparently offers native IPv6
good news everyone!
:p
@NathanC I have it on comcast, too, it's nice
I feel like my epeen grew three sizes the day I got it
Also upgraded to the 50 mbps plan
Although with the wifi issues I've had here I won't see all of that bandwidth :(
that's more bits per second than I have, for sure
Comcast doesn't seem able to make up its mind about if I can IPv6 or not at home. I was seeing IPv6 announcements on the wire for a couple weeks in December, but now nothing.
I switched to a new "modem" and now I'm good. we had this discussion before.
01:05
The router I had lacked ipv6 support, but the modem does
Does anyone know of a reliable, inexpensive, quiet|silent, 16 port 1GB switch? I am kinda thinking of a V1910-16G, but I can't find anything in their specs about how loud it is.
So...I re-enabled the modem (took it off bridged mode) and the meraki picks up the ipv6
@Zoredache I think you can find fanless ones...
This is my IPv6 router: apple.com/airport-extreme
@NathanC Forgot to mention, I need vlan support. I have yet to find a fanless 16 port with vlan support.
@Zoredache For your house?
01:08
@JoelESalas I needed a 48 port switch for my house...
Smells like nerds in here.
@JoelESalas no, for one of the school I support. The particular 'school' is within the jail, which has solid walls they don't want to put holes in, so I needs to be in the classroom.
@Zoredache Probably because managed switches need processors that require cooling
@NathanC Sure. Even a relatively quite fans would probably work, but very few switches seem to list their noise levels in the specs...

@ewwhite Smells like a dead controller
The GS716T-200 and GS724T-300 are fanless switches with silent operation for a pleasant environment.
Someone needs silent switches?
which means the other SKUs are unpleasant
I have a bunch that I use for office environments.
and porn sets...
but really office environments.
@ewwhite Yup, I am looking a quiet/silent switch (16 port 1GB, vlan support, reliable&inexpensive). Looking for options
01:26
@Zoredache HP ProCurve 1810-24G - h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/il/en/sm/WF06b/…
@RyJones That might work, but I have a strong (possibly irrational) aversion to netgear stuff.
@ewwhite looks liek that might work. Seems to be out of stock almost everywhere that we usually purchase through though...
Ah that looks good. Thanks.
Wonder why the Amazon link says 'cisco systems - enterprise'.
01:36
mmmhmm
much abuse so dull wow
@MichaelHampton meh
@ewwhite Hey while we're on the topic of switches, do you know of any gigabit HP switches besides the 2920 that have 10GbE uplinks?
2920-24g + Rack Kit + 10GbE SFP+ + DAC Cables is like $2200/unit
@MarkHenderson I just sold a pair of ProCurve 2910's to a client...
01:45
Throw in a stacking a stacking module for an extra $500/switch too
CX4 10GbE
but when I start talking about 10GbE, I use ProCurve 5400zl chassis switches
@ewwhite That's way out of the league for this situation
@MarkHenderson what's your budget?
They're basically after gbe for all the servers with two 10gbe per switch for their SAN nodes
budget
01:47
They'd like to get two switches and all associated stacking etc for around $5500
And they can do it with Netgear
I'd like to give them a better option
No clue. I go to chassis once SAN is involved.
In fact the Netgear option is substantially cheaper with two GS728TXS at $1200/switch
well, I think the cost expectation there is unrealistic.
Throw in 8 SFP+ modules (two per switch for stacking; two for the SAN) and SFP+ Direct cables and you're still only at about $3500
but do what you have to do!
01:51
@ewwhite Yeah, I suspected as much
ebay-wise, I'm getting 2910a switches at $1100/ea
These people currently have an un-managed 24-port Netgear gigabit switch running their whole infrastructure
So anything is a step in the right direction
you didn't tell me port count
@ewwhite 24
Per switch
J9726A
$1k
01:55
I don't have that model exactly, but I've priced up 2920's already for them
They are $1600 for the base unit
well, that's the SKU I'd use
It's not listed in APAC
shrug
I don't think anyone will come close to the price point to the Netgears
Hard to justify twice the price on a similar solution from HP
But I'll give it to them anyway
because the HP's won't fall over.
Did I even mention that Logicworks had a lot of Netgear deployed?
@ewwhite Haha they won't care. Their whole rack, including a Dell 1900 blade chassis running on unmanaged netgears
And they have never had a networking problem
(because there is nothing to go wrong, probably)
Anyway I'll deal with them on that. But at least I know I didn't miss anything obvious in my research
They also ran out of network ports in some of their rooms, so entire rooms are running on cascaded dumb switches from the local electronics store
We're just taking it one step at a time
02:28
HNNG
Fuck IIS
MiniTruth strikes again!
@Andrew symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) quality : E The estimated median ADSL speed for your area is (Mbps): > 2.25
Just as well I get an A for HFC, but I am one of the lucky few
@MarkHenderson Allegedly I get 3G & 4G coverage! Not likely.
I should not have smoked that cigar on the way home. now I'm all amped up
02:45
damn.
@cole WEAR A CONDOM!
@voretaq7 That won't help, it's like fucking a cactus
so I guess someone doesn't like me saying "You shouldn't run Apache on Windows" >P\:P
@MarkHenderson "It's all fun and games until somebody flys Quantas and the engine explodes."
@Andrew Yeah my productivity for the rest of the day is fucked now
@MarkHenderson have you been following the "internet anonymity allows cyberbullying" thing at all?
@Andrew So not interested
A celebrity kills themselves and now we're all up in arms about cyber bullying when this shit has been going on for years and years, and now only that a pretty famous woman is dead do we give a shit about it
Not just that, but anonymity on the internet has been studied since the early 80's
It's not exactly a new field of research
@MarkHenderson whaddid I miss?
@MarkHenderson "pretty famous" only in the right crowd (I'd never heard of her)
03:07
@Andrew Me neither but my wife knew who she was
@voretaq7 An Australian C-list celebrity killed themselves after battling with depression for years and years
And she had a public breakdown about 2 years ago after she got trolled bad on twitter
So now of course, she killed herself because of twitter trolls
@MarkHenderson absolutely nothing to do with depression, because Mental Health isn't real!
Nothing to do with the mental illness she suffered, or the years of pressure of being in the public eye and the immense pressure to win awards and failing to do so. Nope. Twitters fault.
This may sound callous and harsh, but a someone who has dealt with depression: "Seriously, QQMore. It's the fucking internet. If they don't hate you you're DOING IT WRONG."
@MarkHenderson Fucking whale did it.
good evening gents
the fuck you guys talkin about
@voretaq7 yes, people are maybe going to have to learn that there's more to the interwebs than the like they get on Faceblog.
03:10
@mossy People thinking the internet is a nice place
First mistake.
@Andrew Speaking of kittens, I was on a Cat forum earlier trying to figure out why my cat wont stop yelling like a little bitch.. After reading a few posts, I realized that everyone on the forum talks as if they're the cat.
For instance, "Mom gets mad when I claw the couch"
Mom == person typing
was weird, man.
@mossy A forum full of crazy cat ladies
Um. There's probably a Pet Advice Stack Exchange
03:15
Might find someone for @Wesley there
:|
@Andrew Wouldn't surprise me. There's an SE for fucking everything
How do I motivate my rabbit to eat more hay?
i like this place already
One of my cats discharged it's anal glands on the carpeted steps today. It was nothing short of foul. Cleaned it thoroughly with this Natures Miracle Advance product hoping it works.
03:17
@jscott Do all cats do this?
Should I be worried
I deleted all my SE accounts except for the two main ones
@mossy All cats have anal glands, but no, they don't all just discharge in a horrific blast on carpeted surfaces.
@RyJones You can delete per-site?
@jscott yes you can, I did it
@RyJones Interesting, thanks, and good to know.
@mossy I would google it. Many people take their cats/dogs to the vet to have the glands expressed.
This is just about the grossest thing ever discussed in this room
03:20
lol
can we say wet fart instead, please
@MarkHenderson Where's your red-lipstick-ass-ringed-cat avatar now?
wow
YES!
@jscott if you have no replies or votes it's automatic, if you have either you have to fill out a little form
03:23
@RyJones Do your posts disappear or just get credited to Community/User12345?
they don't get deleted
if I knew where some of my posts on SQA were, we could find out, but I have no idea and SQA is a fucking wasteland
Apparently not

How goes ?
07:18
Morning
goes well

Cool and the magnets ?
they are awesome
they're the opposite polarity so I feel different things with each
IS that by design ?
I think it's more by accident
they can flip over too if you do the right thing with a strong field
07:22
I wonder if you'd feel the earth's magnetic field flip (when it does)
depends on the flux it generates
if it's strong enough to move objects or erase cards, then I will probably be injured
if it's only enough to move a compass needle, nothing will happen
except of course a lot of work will be generated for GIS people
I wouldn't be surprised to find the GIS people ready, equally I wouldn't be surprised to find them not
that software is complex enough that readiness would be very difficult
maybe I'll talk to my (frat) brother who does GIS when I'm in the same city as him again
see how prepared they are
if you do it would be interesting to hear
I'm curious too now
I wonder if any of us will see the day
07:44
It's certainly not far off in geological term s
08:23
This is interesting meta.networkengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/331/… not because of the question but because of the way NE is steering itself away from the low end
08:43
@Iain With the word "engineering" in the title, it really shouldn't be a site for low-end questions
09:01
I think they always saw themselves as being aimed towards big networks and network design

puppet + ossec = broken rpmdb

currently I have dozens of machines that need rpm --rebuilddb and cleanup of duplicate packages :(
@DennisKaarsemaker ouch. Not fun.
Have a cute picture of a horse snuggling a cat instead:
as soon as I can find it...
hahahaha
There. Obviously Dropbox puts photos in Camera uploads, not Photos, because that would make sense.
@JennyD "mmm tasty cat"
09:24
nice... the cat looks really pleased
rather than horrified as one might expect
@DennisKaarsemaker They like eachother.
I've seen the cat lie sleeping on the horse.
The horse thinks small animals are really interesting.
I left out any comments about slapping puppet developers...
@DennisKaarsemaker good catch

Q: How can I reject onsite opportunity?

shaanI started a new job last month. During interview I was told that the clients are from country X and I may need to go that country which was fine for me. But now they asking me to do a similar kind of project for different clients from country Y and they want me to go there. I am not ready for to ...

Talk about precious - I took a job for the free travel, but it's not where I want to go...
@Dan There's a bit of a point behind that, actually.
I think I'd refuse if work wanted to send me to a place where homosexuality is illegal.
I'd go off and find a job where I wasn't going to be put in a position where I'd be breaking the law just by getting off the plane.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor That's a very different circumstance, though
Sounds to me he just doesn't fancy the country
@Dan I think that's not clear with the information provided.
I don't fancy going to Iran.
For the same reasons.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor he says "not interested"
Yeah. I'm not interested either.
;)
Dan
Dan
09:48
You know full well it's different
Unless he's got a crap grasp of English (Plausible) most people wouldn't use the phrase "not interested" to imply a moral issue with something
@Dan I just think there's probably more to it.
I've just built 12 Windows Server 2012R2 VMs, to make file share servers
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Sounds to me he took the job because he fancied travelling to wherever. I suppose, in terms of what's 'right and wrong' it depends very much on how it was sold in the interview. If it was a sidenote of "We have a customer in x, you may get to visit" then I'd say tough shit. Obviously if it was a heavy part of the job "sell", then he has cause for complaining.
@TomO'Connor 12?
500G x2 DFS, 500G, 500G x2 DFS Replicated, 1T x2 DFS, 4T, 2T x2 DFS
@Dan Yeah. It's a very odd arrangement.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Sweet. DAS or SAN?
SAN via vmware.
I think there's something like 100TB free
Dan
Dan
09:52
Sexy nice, but it sounds like they could take more advantage of SAN replication, perhaps?
@Dan I'm not sure how..
These are all chunks of vmfs
There's san replication, but that's at a much lower level
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Think I misunderstood - each one of those DFS shares is doing something independent then presumably?
@Dan Yeah. Each pair of servers with DFS-R, has it's own namespaced share..
so there's CIFS high availability
Dan
Dan
Gotchya
That's a lot of CIFS storage!
@Dan In terms of servers, yes
but only about 12T in storage space
Because there are some interesting restrictions on who can access which share
