At which point, they've no idea how to badger you for more money.
I don't think it's terribly easy to track someone back by postmark alone.
yep. everyone wins, because they still got more money
Dan
Dan
Is it scary that I just remember a complex password on a project I've not touched for 3 years
@Dan Not really. I can remember passwords like that too
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor We're 1337
Actually, nwo I put my mind to it, I can remember the local admin password from my first job
I can remember my dad's old office phone number from 1992
14:03
its amazing what stays in your head
One day, I'll call it
old passwords, old phone numbers, slightly incorrect 80s song lyrics, bizarre and frankly disturbing website memes -- welcome to the inside of my mind
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor I still put our old pre-1996 home phone number down on forms that demand a number
Sorry to whoever has that
I discovered on wednesday, that 01234 567 890 is no longer a valid number.
@Dan Meanwhile, in produce...
mdb: 5557
nmb: gato
af: 1957
mms: mms
mjn: star
aas: gina
jmk: star
dwp: 0917
shameful
Dan
Dan
14:06
Are those passwords
Yes.
Dan
Dan
Nice
you should change all their passwords for them. Possibly to "Brazzers" or to the URL for that barrel of lube.
that'll be an experience they won't soon forget
I cracked... 400 out of 486 passwords.
ah tv tropes... "Salt Lake City Comic Con 2013 had a panel featuring, for the first time ever, William Shatner and Adam West on stage together. "

I am sad I missed that.
14:09
@Dan The server colo site I use have 23456 as the last part of their phone number, which i think is quite neat.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Bet they had to pay for that
@Dan Probably, but probably not too much
my new business voip line ends 472500
which was no more expensive than anything else.
Dan
Dan
Why do you feel the need to have it?
The business VoIP I mean
@Dan Well, it's an interesting story, that.
Firstly, lots of other businesses don't like to call your mobile.
Dan
Dan
Wah, since when?
14:12
Secondly, and more interestingly, because it's also a local number to where I live, and whilst I live in the same building as my parents, there's no intercom, so they use my local voip number
which is free to call .
Dan
Dan
THat second one is just bizaare, but okay!
@dan since forever, actually. Plus, it means you can do cool things like have a Voip phone on your desk at home, and if it rings for more than 3 rings, divert to your mobile.
Dan
Dan
But I've never had anyone whinge about using my mobile number - it's the only way to stand a chance of getting me
@TomO'Connor Yeah, I get the concept - I've just never had an issue with mobiles
I had to get a D&B registration number for my company so that someone would work with me
Dan
Dan
Though if my O365 Lync could do SIP trunking that'd be amazing
14:14
for this, you need a landline (or something that looks like one to a regex)
Dan
Dan
Fair comment
D&B occasionally call you to validate that it still works, but it's pretty much impossible with just an 07 number
Dan
Dan
I'm not bothering with that shit for the time being, I'd just use my house phone for that
PLUS, you can count your voip linerental etc as a business operating expense, reducing your tax bill.
true
Dan
Dan
14:15
It's hardly reducing your tax bill to buy something you don't need, though!
Or rather, it's reducing your tax by increasing operating expenses, but you're not getting any more money in your pocket
@Dan Well, I'd say a business phone is a pretty big requirement.
aql.com/voip-order/number-type What number do you want :P
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor I have one - it's in my pocket ;)
I'll get one if I need one, but anyone who doesn't grasp that if they phone a landline I'm not likely to be there isn't someone who I should be working with anyway.
But it doesn't scale.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor It scales 1:1 just fine
And I actually need a mobile, which does make it a useful tax saving ;)
And VAT saving
For reference, I use a mobile... and a land line at home
I'd like to get a fancy cloud VoIP phone... but it's not too necessary
my clients prefer to text me... (I'm not kidding)
I make them pay for the privilege.
14:18
But look at it this way. In the future you might need to have someone else answer your calls. It's easier to divert a voip connection than it is to divert off a mobile.
Secondly, say you get 400 business cards printed, but need to change your mobile number for some reason, it's easier to do that by changing the forwarder, than reprinting everything.
Thirdly, some numbers just look cool.
(your telephone numbers out there do NOT look cool!)
Dan
Dan
Eh, all seems pointless and unnecessary to me
Plus, I think nowadays people woudl expect to see a mobile number on a card anyway
@Dan also true
Dan
Dan
I'm not anti VoIP or anything, by the way - but if things go to plan, I'll be spending minimal time at home anyway. If you're out and about, I don't think people find it unreasonable that you're available on a mobile phone only
Like I say, if I could do proper Lync, I'd be all over that
BUt buying a VoIP number JUST so I can forward it to my mobile is just pointless and increases call connection time
And adds a point of failure etc
@TomO'Connor My phone number ends in -4321
14:21
01234 489894 I just found a partial palindromic one.
@Dan I've had more mobile phone failures than Voip service outages.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Yes, but if all my VoIP is doing is forwarding - then my mobile breaking is going to break it anyway
See what I'm saying?
@Dan Except it doesn't.
because if it can't make the ongoing connection, it'll either go to vm, or go to your desk phone
or go to another number, like a virtual office service.
Someone answer my damn question so I can get a second monitor!

Q: Driving two 2560x1440 displays with Lenovo T430 and 433715U ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3

MDMarraI want to grab a second HP ZR2740w for use in my home office. I have a Lenovo T430 with an Intel HD4000 GPU, not the nVidia model. The HP monitors come with Dual-Link DVI or DisplayPort for connectivity. The Lenovo dock has a single DisplayPort, a single-link DVI, and a VGA connector. The only o...

I like forwarding my VoIP number to my mobile. I can control who gets forwarded, and I don't have to give anyone my actual mobile number.
Dan
Dan
1) Yes, the desk phone in 99% empty office. 2) My mobile provider has VM, to and 3) I'm not going the crappy softphone route either
14:23
@MichaelHampton This. Blocking is easier too.
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton I'll give you that, that's an advantage - but like I said, business contacts would expect to know your mobile number now
@MDMarra I DON'T SEE ANY MENTION OF APPLE!!!
@ewwhite Because I know for a fact that my macbook supports it
@Dan They would never know it wasn't a mobile number, unless they looked it up. I also have a freephone number routed to my desk :)
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Oh, you mean get a VoIP number that looks like a mobile?
14:25
@MDMarra All of this non-Apple shit... Apple simplifies life.
Bzzzt!
@Dan In the US they're hard to tell apart, since they usually use the same area codes
@Dan I have an office number, but I have no idea what it is. It's on my business cards, but whenever I get a vm on my office line, it shows up as an attachment in outlook
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Ah, ours all mostly clear
@MDMarra Didn't you search?
2
Q: What concerns are there with putting two high-end graphics cards in one PC?

Tom O'ConnorI want to put two AMD/ATI V3700 into a HP 8200 Desktop to get 4x DVI outputs for 4 separate screens. Can anyone see any flaws in my plan?

14:26
@MDMarra I tried to daisy chain displayport once, and it failed no matter what I tried
@Dan In the US it can vary all the way to the last three digits of a number. And that's before number portability.
@pauska I've never managed it.
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Ah
@TomO'Connor ? That's entirely different
@MDMarra Yeah, It's kinda the same.
Sorta.
In a not at all kinda way.
14:28
@MDMarra are you really sure that apple can drive two of those at native displays with the discrete GPU?
Not really, I only want two monitors but both at 2560x1440 and I don't have a fancy Matrox external video card thingy
@pauska integrated you mean?
Pretty sure
@MDMarra I think you might have to buy the matrox thingy.
@pauska Apple can drive three external displays
@Dan Here's an example... most of the numbers in this block are mobile, but -1000 through -1999 are VoIP
@ewwhite yes, I know that, but 2x2560x1440 takes quite the power
even for non-3d stuff
Dan
Dan
14:29
@MichaelHampton Ah, this is how ours work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
@Dan But I usually just give people my freephone, and if they ask for a mobile, then the normal VoIP number.
@TomO'Connor I'm pretty sure I can power a second on with the onboard mDP and power the first one with the dock's fill-sized DP, but there's a restocking fee on the monitor if I'm wrong :)
I'm using two thunderbolt displays from this macbook...
but I don't know the details.. it just kinda works
@pauska I'd have one at 2560x1440 and one ay 1440x2560 (not that it makes a difference)
the screens are displayport 1.2?
14:31
@Dan Yep, they're sort of non-geographic, many countries do that. The US doesn't, they're just lumped in with all the regular geographic numbers.
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton I suppose it doesn't really matter nowadays - the concept of geographic blocks is kind of outdated I think
@pauska hm, not sure
The US never had a Big Number Change, and probably won't.
@Dan Yeah it mostly is outdated and largely irrelevant, now that calling has gotten so cheap.
14:33
ahh you've bought screens with a single displayport interface
no daisy chain for you
...and the last six digits of my toll-free number spell STUPID
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton That's something else you guys do - you'd never see a phone number referred to as letters over here
@pauska Right, but my laptop has an onboard mDP and my dock has a DP. So I should be able to get a DP->mDP cable and drive the second one directly from my laptop while docked
Strangers on the internet are claiming it works
@Dan We have a history of it. A looong history.
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Haha, I never understood it when I was kid - assumed you had proper letters on your phones
14:36
@MDMarra depends on the dock really
we just have nice long numbers for our emergency services: 0118 999 881 999 119 7253
if it's just a port replicator then it will work.. if it's a dock that switches the circuits then probably not
@Dan It goes WAY back to the time when there were no dials or keypads on phones and the operator had to place all calls for you. You would have to ask for a place name and a number within that area. When they finally put dials on phones, you would dial an area by matching the first letters of the place name with the numbers.
@pauska why? the dock is already working
So some people got the bright idea of getting phone numbers that spelled out things.
14:37
the onboard mDP is what i'd plug the second into
Dan
Dan
@RobM It's a bitch to remember
it's quite a neat idea, just one that never happened here
that's 0118 999 881 999 119 7253 @dan
Dan
Dan
@MichaelHampton Ah, I can see how it came about
@MichaelHampton Just dial "HUmboldt 6-5127"
Dan
Dan
@RobM Did you see my Facebook row?
14:38
nope
Or "1-800-Mix-A-Lot"
17070 is my favourite BT Number ever.
@ewwhite @Dan I still have here a rotary desk phone with OLympia 9-0457 printed on the dial.
@dan can't see it now, what was it about?
Dan
Dan
@RobM It wasn't that exciting - someone passing misinformation about 112 vs 999
But it irritated me
14:39
I remember thinking it was really clever that american phones had names/letters on them when I was a kid
I wonder how often people call the speaking clock these days.
Do US phones still have a FLASH button?
@MichaelHampton What do you think?

A: High Memory 64bit server, not using all ram

KevIm coming back here to answer my own question! The issue is caused when you have multi cpu's (not multi core) eg 2 cpus each with x cores vm.zone_reclaim_mode=0 fixes this.

@TomO'Connor some do
@ewwhite Is it still in use for the mysterious group calling thing?
@TomO'Connor Yeah you just push down on the hook...
@MikeyB Oh yeah, there's that too, but when I was a kid, there was a distinct button. We found we could have some early-form of conference calling
Dan
Dan
14:45
@RobM Maybe I'm just silly for getting irritated, but I do find this kind of crap infuriating:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2409507084/permalink/10151809338857085/?stream_ref=2
That guy sounds like a dickweed.
@Dan Facebook? Yeah it's pretty infuriating.
@TomO'Connor Three-way calling?
Dan
Dan
@MikeyB True dat
@MichaelHampton yeah.
It always sucked a bit.
Dan
Dan
14:48
@TomO'Connor There's always sucking in a three way
Oh yeahh
this is rather neat.
@ewwhite I think we need to get rid of "Post as guest" network-wide.
Dan
Dan
I like that they sell G8 caddies when HP don't support non standard drives
@dan that bloke arguing with you on facebook is a complete and utter wank handle.
@Dan HP doesn't sell them.
Dan
Dan
14:50
@ewwhite I know
And there are some poorly-built reverse-engineered caddies out there.
Dan
Dan
@RobM Not that I'm not a cock, but it did wind me up
@MichaelHampton I didn't know about that sysctl parameter
Dan
Dan
They're expensive, too
@Dan Support, or allow?
There's a subtle difference.
14:50
@ewwhite I didn't either!
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor To my knowledge, G8 servers won't work properly with non-standard drives
I noticed that! The bloke just seems like one of those pedantic dicks
I wonder if they'll work if you change the RAID card for a stock LSI one.
if not.. how is that not anticompetitive.
Dan
Dan
@RobM I suppose in his defence, the video is misleading
@Dan they will
Dan
Dan
14:51
@ewwhite Really?
Yes...
Dan
Dan
I swear G8 didn't, am I totally wrong?
I'm pretty sure if you did that, you'd be out for all sorts of trouble legally.
They'll work, but the server may complain anyway
no legal issues
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Hmm
14:52
yeah, fair enough, but people believing any old shit just because someone else wrote it down or made a video about it is something that winds me up. Just look at all the endless bollocks that gets repeated on facebook that would die out if people took just 10 seconds to fact check things
Dan
Dan
@RobM Yup
@RobM not just facebook, but the print media too.
Dan
Dan
And very yup
@Dan I can dig up the errors
Theoretically, if you made a server that would only work (literally work) with disks supplied by you, that would fall under EU antitrust law.
14:54
for sure
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Matbe I'm just mental, but I thought you said you couldn't use non-HP flash with it?
@Dan you can, but the controller will bitch
nobody wants to deal with it
Dan
Dan
Okay, and I'm in that camp I have to say
All our stuff is 100% HP, so I've not seen it
@ewwhite Is it different electronics, or do they write something to the first sector?
@TomO'Connor firmware identification...
and weird ass errors front he controller
14:57
@ewwhite Fair enough
and the rest....

A: Third-party SSD solutions in ProLiant Gen8 servers

ewwhiteI've covered SSD interoperability and compatibility issues with HP servers several times here. Check these posts: HP D2700 enclosure and SSDs. Will any SSD work? Are there any SAN vendors that allow third party drives? So, the move from G6 and G7 HP ProLiants to the Gen8 variants forced a dis...

Dan
Dan
I can get that for £120 (ex VAT0 - good buy?
@ewwhite Oh, is that it - so what's the issue. All it says is about the LEDs
Getting a damn POST error every boot...
and not being able to use the fancy LEDs on the drive caddies
Dan
Dan
Yeah, but it doesn't halt it does it?
It's not even an error - it's just a statement of fact to be fair
it may do an F1 prompt
but the BIOS defaults to the 20-second delay
Dan
Dan
15:02
I wouldn't worry about it, personally - I'd gladly roll servers with different disks in if that's the case
I thought it was a lot harsher than that
more importantly, these get logged in IML and for support purposes... not good
So if you generate a support bundle, HP may say, "you have a bunch of notes on your array controller... put genuine disks in and try again before we can proceed."
I know Dell's SSDs cost several times those of identical OEM stuff and so I have no problem with doing that in a server.
@RobM Dell and HP OEM SSDs are Sandisk enterprise disks...
which really ARE expensive
$2500+
@ewwhite and if you were calling them about a drive issue they'd have a point, but if you were calling them about an issue with the processor I'd tell them that I had Dell's phone number too
@ewwhite Do you get that every time you boot?
15:10
@TomO'Connor yes
@Dan Figure out how much toner costs first.
and the error I had there was with a disk I bought directly from HP!!
@ewwhite So that effectively stops non-interactive booting.
That's a bit lame.
and I was trying to show the people at my last job about how great HP was... so it was embarrassing.
@TomO'Connor no, it delays by 20 seconds
the boot continues
@Dan Allowing my clients to text me is a blessing and a curse...
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Not cheap, but it's okay
15:14
my morning...
same system with the wide-open web shell...
so I'm waiting for the, "we were hacked" call/text

@ewwhite dell even rebrands those intel 3700 ssd's..
value eMLC or whatever dell calls them
it's the cheapest one if you configure a server on their site
@pauska Oh! So at that point, you could just buy the Intels.
it's just a standard intel ssd with a firmware identifier on it
@ewwhite yes, but it will also bitch about non-standard disks
The HP's will not accept the Intel 3700's nicely... same errors.
@MDMarra But you haven't seen the password complexity yet, either.
15:19
three letters, same as username
I know
or four digits...
How many have a blank password?
incrementing by 1
@MDMarra 2 people
hahaha
@ewwhite hah, that's funny, I have one sitting on my desk that I just got.
15:20
@ewwhite Oh, that's not too bad.
@TomO'Connor It doesn't do well with clients... people buying $7,000 servers don't like to see that
@MDMarra 393 password hashes cracked, 93 left
@ewwhite Yeah, but I'm looking for a sub 1000 GBP server, and I don't care too much
@TomO'Connor yeah, you can do it
@ewwhite or the support engineers
remember the tweet I showed you? the brent ozar guys..
@pauska but I have clients who are determined to do it..
15:22
the ones who claimed that it was fine to put consumer ssd's inside dell servers
@pauska and didn't they fail?
and then the dell engineer refused to do work on the server..
haha
Yeah, storage went down from what I could tell
it really is that simple
even though we know that the consumer ssd's isn't the cause
they still won't give you support on anything at all related to storage failing
even if it's a fuse on the backplane that popped
So I DO use consumer drives in some very specific situations... but not on the new gear.
I've gone to PCIe-based SSDs since HP can't refuse to support them
15:24
x86 servers are low margins.. SSD's is like klondyke for them
same with HP and their super special custom ram
they give you a tiny bit of extra bandwith, for double the price
@pauska but again, "Smart Memory Authenticated" messages at POST
they probably saw that half their orders were servers with 8GB of RAM and no extra ram order.. everyone just ordered kingstons
@ewwhite exactly
I think HP is going to lose using these tactics
Focus on the good stuff... ILO4, firmware, performance.
I'm pretty confident that our next purchase will be Dell
and since you mention iLO.. Dell upgrades the iDRAC on older models aswell
instead of HP, where you have a Windows 3.11 interface on a 4 year old server
while the brand new server is the shizzle ilo
15:28
they catched up on the firmware bit aswell.. you can download a prebuilt iso
or build your own
I used to be completely anti-dell...
So I opened a ticket with Dreamhost..
What did I hear about HP locking people out of downloads without a support contract?
I'd go to companies and switch them to HP
15:29
@MichaelHampton yeah, EVA
but now... after having Supermicro....
no more storage firmware without a contract
@MichaelHampton THey're locking lots of firmware now. theregister.co.uk/2013/12/23/hewlett_packard_support_clampdown
proliant aswell.. huh
well, we get 5yr support on everything we buy.. so meh..
I understand that decision
I don't... because HP firmware fixes bugs and adds functionality
15:31
Dude, you're getting a Dell.
I know, I know
I used to hate Dell stuff
so if I go install system at a client... in 2009... and run it for 4 years, I may want to repurpose the server once I've replaced it with a NEW HP box...
It's just that they give us way more value and less hassle
and I naturally go to update the firmware on the retired system... and can't find it! Or lose access to it
@ewwhite I wonder how they'll do the lockout though
is it enough to have a single serial number that's valid, and then download the SPP?
15:33
@pauska Last week, when I was on this page, I couldn't access the downloads.
@ewwhite works for me..
oh, it works now..
@pauska It takes a special kind of stupid to think that locking people out of updates that only work on hardware you've already sold is a good idea.. I can't imagine this being implemented with any less than Full Ret-rd.
but last week, it was taking me to a page that said "Access to these updates requires an active support contact"
Dell is easy... type in the service tag and they give you everything. Even out of warranty.
15:37
:(
And, their web site isn't an ungodly nightmare to navigate.
@kce Yeah, we're looking for a new support person. It's entry level and the pay's low compared to Seattle, but rent is cheap here and it's a nice (warm :P) valley. Very laid back workplace with nice people.
@Skyhawk Yup, entry level.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor They did it for £100 + £10 postage in the end. Bargain!
Got my W2 today! Get to figure out how much the Gubermint owes me.
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Is your government likes ours - extremely good at collecting (From normal people and small companies, anyway - $BigCorp can do what they like) but terrible at paying out?
15:44
@ewwhite from the depths of time..... serverfault.com/q/571316/1435
@Chopper3 I saw it. I could help, but I don't wanna
he needs to update the LO100 firmware.
@Dan Eh, if your part of the unwashed masses they're pretty good about both directions. If you're a special snowflake, god help you.
@ewwhite and get a newer box
people seem to hold onto old-ass servers
I wouldn't touch anything older than a G7 today
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Oh, I forget it's pretty normal over there - for most people here their tax is just deducted at the wage point and that's that
15:50
@ewwhite I wish I'd held onto my mint NeXT Cube and NeXT Stations
I don't think a DL140 G3 is going to become a collector's item anytime soon...
Yeah, we have estimated tax deducted in each paycheck (via one of three systems of estimation, all of which suck). Then at the end of the year we file a "return" to calculate what should have been paid and sort out the difference.
@Dan Dunno how it is there, but here was have some control over how much is withheld per paycheck. Some people freeze when they see the form and take maximum withholding (like my wife >_>) and some people lie and say they have 20 kids put a large number in the box so the gubberment will take less throughout year. So... the payout can vary by quite a bit.
15:51
4 DIMM slots
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Yeah, the vast majority of people don't need to do that filing as for most, the only relevant information is your earnings. I actually need to do a "Self Assessment" as we call it, but only because I receive a high level of expenses. I just match the numbers as business expenses, rather than earnings and that's it.
@Tanner I don't think we get a choice - everyone gets a tax code that your employer has to use
@OzgurErdogan Please try a different web browser or delete your browser cache. — ewwhite 6 secs ago

A: hp ilo "remote console undefined"

ewwhiteClose your browser. Flush your cache. Open the ILO again. If that does not work, reset the ILO by going to "Diagnostics" and choose "Reset ILO".

Shouldn't web browsers be smarter?
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite It's normally a dev failure that
If the page is marked as static, but isn't, it's not really the browsers fault
but do certain browsers cache more aggressively?
Devs mark their pages as "cache until the sun burns out and the universe goes cold" and the browser doesn't have a lot of choice in the matter.
Dan
Dan
15:57
@ewwhite Yes, but note that Facebook etc don't have this issue
@Dan so newer generation web applications are better about this
@Dan Our IRC (Internal Revenue Code) is currently about 7500 8.5x11" pages, or a 24MB PDF.
@ewwhite No, less stupid developers are better about this.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Nope, properly coded webapps have always been fine
It's all about your headers
And occasionally sessions
