You never experienced the magic of needing to add
192.168.0.4 "NETDIRECT <1c>"
to lmhosts for domain members on a remote network
Oh and make sure you get the number of spaces right or it won't work.
People used to use WINS for that, I suppose
Hmmm. I guess I should have explained my request. I'm looking for the easiest way to spend a ridiculous amount of money on something completely useless, using a credit card. Those bankrupt California towns trying to auction themselves on eBay some years back sprung to mind immediately.

A: Workstations in remote site don't know about new AD realm

Evan AndersonI'm going to shoot in the dark here. Your Samba servers can be WINS servers. I'd consider turning on WINS server functionality on a test Samba DC, passing out its address as an NBNS server (option 44), and telling the clients to do H-node type NetBIOS name resolution (option 46, value 8). You'll...

That's probably the best bet.

Q: Multiple Servers, Multiple Drive Failure within 12 hours?

DaffyDucIn the IT world I just won the Lottery Twice.... Today we had a hard drive fail in a raid array. A few hours later we had another drive fail on a different server.... We started checking all the environmental logs and systems immediately. Humidity is 40%, temp is at 75*, no dust or other partic...

@MikeyB I was 11 actually in 1996 when it came out
22:03
@MDMarra Do you want to work on my domain controller?
So not quite 7, not quite old enough to care about NetBIOS vs DNS
(yes, that's what I call it)
@ewwhite Whats wrong with it
You know... I never repaired/replaced it...
and I lost the link that @HopelessN00b sent me.
22:04
a whole fucking day of productivity lost to email.
@ewwhite First 15 steps, since you'll be standing up a new one with the same name and IP.
The bikeless one?
HE GOT A FUCKING BIKE?
no way.
@MikeyB Yeah, I'll look at that. I wonder if it's even possible to buy ~$10 million "worth" of those things, though.
@HopelessN00b You have access to a bottomless visa?
22:10
@pauska I bought a rack LCD monitor/keyboard. I didn't pay too much attention on ebay when I bought it, I just saw "20" Fold-Out American Dynamics monitor with KVM and keyboard/trackpad" and was all "Oh fuck yeah". I didn't bother researching it, and its maximum resolution is 800x600 :(
@MDMarra I said nothing
@MarkHenderson oh no
@MikeyB AMEX.
@HopelessN00b haha I drive through one of those towns every day
@HopelessN00b how much BTC is out there?
OH!
@ewwhite Like I said, I know nothing
22:11
@HopelessN00b You could buy a metric shit ton of Z10s.
@MikeyB I'd rather light the money on fire
@MikeyB They make us jump through hoops for every little effing thing, for "security" and "compliance" and whatever other BS, and then for the $69 domain purchase that required 6 weeks of BS and CFO-level approval, they gave me a bottomless AMEX.
Like... REALLY?!?!?
So, I'm hoping to make the company the proud owner of a very useless nothing. Or at least generate a per-purchase/confirmation screenshot of such an occurrence.
@HopelessN00b I used to have one of those. I had to sign something to the effect that I was personally responsible for all charges.
@HopelessN00b humblebundle.com
22:14
@MikeyB oh there ya go
@MikeyB Yeah, that's the best part. It's not even a corporate one. It's the personal card of one of the execs.
(Or issued to his name, at least.)
@ewwhite how much is a lifetime subscription to Brazzers?
I'd be certain I was out of my mind if I didn't have so many witnesses to this general insanity.
@MikeyB you wouldn't be able to afford it
@ewwhite @HopelessN00b can
22:17
@MikeyB Oh, better yet, a lifetime membership for every one of our employees.
@HopelessN00b Better make sure that it's a membership for both male and female employees; otherwise that's sexual discrimination right there
No, a lifetime membership for every person in Columbus! ... I'll have to figure out how to export the phone book to csv.
whats a phone book?
@MDMarra Big bricks of paper that keep showing up on my welcome mat every year.
@HopelessN00b They allow you to cancel your phone book here. One of the first things I do every time I move is cancel it.
22:24
@MarkHenderson Meh. I never get around to it. Plus, it's nice to have a big, blunt object you can use to either bludgeon someone to death with, or set on fire to stay warm, in an emergency.
How can I find out who is sending out the spam? Ask your employees if they're a piece of malware. When one of them says "yes," that's your spammer. — HopelessN00b 18 secs ago
@HopelessN00b waits for flag to come in on that comment
is a flag like a star? the more the better?

this is depressing: networkworld.com/news/2014/…
whoa... first time using Windows 8!!!
MIND BLOWN!!
@ewwhite Fuck man, every time I see 'Snipping Tool' I'm reminded of my vasectomy.

@ewwhite It took me way too long to find "Windows PowerShell" in there.
22:38
> The latest standard, 802.11ac, is the first to work exclusively in 5GHz
^ False; I thought that 802.11a was strictly 5GHz too
@MarkHenderson it was
It was, but 802.11a never really gained much traction
it's a laptop meant for travel... windows 8.1 Should I join it to the domain?
@MDMarra TELL ME!!!
@ewwhite Hopfully 8.1 - Windows 8 is a pile of shit, 8.1 slightly less so due to a few minor tweaks (such as putting the start logo back, and the default search option in the start menu including settings)
IEEE 802.11a-1999 or 802.11a was an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 wireless local network specifications that defined requirements for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system. It was originally designed to support wireless communication in the unlicensed national information structure (U-NII) bands (in the 5–6 GHz frequency range) as regulated in the United States by the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 47, Section 15.407. Originally described as clause 17 of the 1999 specification, it is now defined in clause 18 of the 2012 specification and provide...

OK the number/picture password on the new BB10 is bloody brilliant. You can watch me unlock my device and still have no idea how I did it.
@ewwhite why wouldnt you
@MDMarra because it will be mobile and away most of the time
@MarkHenderson 8 was fine. Unified search was a glaring mistake though

@ewwhite doesnt matter
join that shit!
it doesnt really matter actually
they dont really use AD for anything

I bought a bike (frame)!
@RyJones What happened to your payroll debacle?
@shanemadden Well, I told @thefarseeker so now I guess I can go public. I bought a Surly LHT frame last week. cc: @freiheit @ewwhite910
@Wesley I've been getting paid every Friday since then
22:56
@freiheit BTW, I'm going to build it with disc brakes.
My recommendation for @Wesley
@Wesley Did you know that bikes have forks, handlebars, wheels, pedals, cranksets, headsets, bottom brackets, cassettes, etc etc?
@RyJones Well, that's good.
@Wesley You bought the disc trucker frame?
@freiheit Yes! All the books I've been reading have learned me good.
22:57
oh no... you're going to BUILD it?
@freiheit Yarr. I'm using the Surly site's bike loadout as a pattern.
this is why people hire bike mechanics!
and IT people...
and plumbers...
@Wesley on behalf of literally everyone: about fucking time.
and HOOKERS....
@ewwhite I'm changing careers to become a bike mechanic.
@MDMarra I still haven't built the whole thing yet. Give me another few months. =P
22:58
@Wesley Oh good, because attaching disc brakes without the little disc brake attachment points would not be a good plan
@Wesley If you really really work your way up in the field of bike mechanics, you can make as much as $50k a year!
@freiheit Maybe I also have an arc welding yen...
@freiheit Which is more than I'm making now.
@freiheit I'm scared
@Wesley MIG or TIG is easier and nicer quality
I'd go MIG if you're a newbie
Yay, the gov't owes me $2500
@Wesley TIG
@RyJones If he wants to do bicycles, he needs TIG
23:00
@freiheit if you say so, I was wondering if the metals would allow MIG welding
@freiheit Being an IT person he will of course build a TIG welding robot, and learn how to program a PIC or an ATMega rather than learn how to actually weld
@freiheit Although it's annoying to note that on the Surly site they do not list the frame as being different between the LHT and the Disc Trucker.
@MarkHenderson welding is a skill where you get a lot of sunburn while you learn
@Wesley want to relocate yet? We have a lot of openings. arrayasolutions.com/careers
@MarkHenderson If he successfully builds a TIG welding robot that can do quality bicycle frames, he can sell the patent for it for enough to buy everybody on SF a bike
23:01
Witness: LHT vs Disc Trucker
@MDMarra blocked by McAfee
@MDMarra More willing now than in the past, yeah. =/
@RyJones hahaa what?
@MDMarra Wait, you know my skillset better than most people do, and you still want me to apply to work with you?!
@MarkHenderson (only robot-welded bike frames are the cheap ones with ridiculously thick tube walls. Everything else is done by hand)
23:02
@Wesley whatevs, bro
@MDMarra where you be?
The dummy you know... (is that how it goes?)
@RyJones Philadelphia area
@freiheit Touch the magic wand!
man, too far east
not far enough!
actually thats not true
any farther and it would be new jersey and no one wants that
23:03
@freiheit I'm imagining some sort 4-axis arm on a small dolly, and the dolly will expand around the circular frame, and some sort of laser measurement thing to position the welding tip against the edge of the frame and then two stepper motors to walk the welder against the tube
@RyJones I believe you can MIG weld the types of metal used on bike frames, if you can just get the correct filler metal fix, but you don't want to add that much material, so all the good stuff is TIG welded.
@RyJones Falcon was trying to get me to Seattle. I've got to get back with him about it in February too!
@Wesley well come on up I'll spin you around on an office chair and fill you with alcohol
@MarkHenderson I don't know welding, but from what I hear from folks that do it on bike frames, you really gotta watch the puddle closely to get good welds on bike frames
@RyJones Yes, it is. At least, that's my philosophy on flags. In fact, flags must be even better than stars, because they're less common.
23:04
@freiheit also watch the heat affected zone
@freiheit I don't really know welding either, so yeah
Really just talking out my arse
It would be easier to figure out how to braze it than weld it. Brazing is strong enough for bikes.
less chance of ruining things, too
I'm thinking that @wesley should stick with brazing lugged bike frames.
Wesley has been waiting for this bike for about 10 years it feels like. You think "strong enough" is good enough for him?
@RyJones lugged brazing, in particular (pieces that the tubes slide into and get brazed to).
23:07
@RyJones Wow, that sounds awesome. =P
@freiheit So what is the deal with Surly not listing a different product number for disc truckers?

Q: Defending PCs against APTs

PhilWe are evaluating the security of the PCs used by people with access to high-value company documents. Anyone want to give this a shot?
@freiheit yes I know what it is
@Wesley No fucking clue
@freiheit When you go to the product page for one or the other they just say "We start with the LHT 4130 Cro-Magnon frame, and then..."
anyone here into razors?
23:08
@RyJones There's also fillet brazing
@ewwhite ya dude, I had one before my first iPhone!
@ewwhite Get this one
who shaves?
@freiheit I was already reading the review for amazon.com/gp/product/B002FC7B2G?&tag=cybermday-20
23:10
@MichaelHampton "Remove networking cards and solder case shut."
@RyJones I shave my neck and cheeks in the shower every morning
@MDMarra you're far more tidy than I am, I suppose
@freiheit (because black people can't use just any razor)
@ewwhite what?
@ewwhite I get a few of those curly beard problems, too.
23:11
our hair is curly... will curl up inside the skin if not shaved right
Surely this will be amusing...
that sucks.
So @freiheit you're 2 for 2... you got me the wifi-enabled bathroom scale...
and knew which razor I was gonna buy
It's why black folks can get medical exceptions in the military from requiring a clean shave
That didn't take long. @AzinRelithLofad's user account is already deleted.
23:14
@MDMarra Because right now, my face looks like the underside of a Nestle Crunch Bar.
@ewwhite You had better buy a different box of blades that what I got, then...
@ewwhite mmmmmmmmm, crunch bar
what about that razor-by-mail thing they promote endlessly on talk radio?
@freiheit why? And do you think I can get this thing locally?
@RyJones Sooo much more expensive than a safety razor and a pack of good quality blades for it...
@ewwhite I bought it online. Nearest fancy shaving store is probably 50 miles away.
23:18
There's a fancy razor place near my "office"
But I don't trust their razors... theartofshaving.com/razors-safety-razors/…
@MDMarra nasty
Are you more of a Payday guy
@MDMarra He's more of a Hundred Grand guy
love those
The close votes queue is blowing up again. Go burn any close votes you may have left.
@Wesley maybe 4 or 5 of them
23:20
@ewwhite sigh
@MDMarra And I'm rich now... so I only eat Kit-Kat bars from the UK and German gummy bears.
@ewwhite Any new clients since I've been gone the last few weeks?
@ewwhite dude, I always thought your avatar was a guy looking left wearing a flowing white head dress
@Wesley yeah
@RyJones draw me like one of your french girls
23:22
@ewwhite -.-
@ewwhite Keep up that kind of talk, and we'll sneak in some sugarfree gummy bears (read the reviews)
@ewwhite I was just informed that Kit Kat bars from Japan come in "weird flavors"
@freiheit I hear those a good for lift off
@RyJones nah, I'm more of a Dandy...
A dandy (also known as a beau or gallant) is a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, pursued with the appearance of nonchalance in a cult of Self. Historically, especially in late 18th- and early 19th-century Britain, a dandy, who was self-made, often strove to imitate an aristocratic lifestyle despite coming from a middle-class background. Though previous manifestations of the petit-maître (French for small master) and the Muscadin have been noted by John C. Prevost, the modern practice of dandyism first appeared in the...

"Consumption of some sugar-free candies may cause stomach discomfort and/or a laxative effect"
@MDMarra they do, there is a guy that reimports them to the US

@MDMarra I have Orange and peanut butter kitkats here
ya, but do you have octopus testicle kit kat?
@MDMarra You scream, I scream, we all scream for octopus testicles!
23:23
@MDMarra gimme two weeks.
Gotta work on that jingle.
Hark, do mine eyes deceive me?
The Gummi Bear "Cleanse"
hahahahaha
Do I really see @HopelessN00b in the room?
@Wesley bro, he's back
Where have you been
23:24
@Wesley yes, next to Ethabelle
@HopelessN00b is next to a guy with a Swastika as an avatar. Seems about like a normal day here...
@Wesley yeah I was wondering what was up with that guy
Hit reload.
some guy I follow on Instagram has a large swastika tattoo, but he's asian, so I figured it's the good luck version
Yeah my icons are acting weird
Refreshing helped
23:26
...
The guy with the Nazi swastika has been ... dealt with.
@Wesley Kinda. I'm feeling sorry for the "help me protect my company's data against our stupid executives" guy, so I'm trying to give a not-useless answer to that question.
@MichaelHampton good
I got made the "technical team lead" at work the other day ... which literally means nothing except for more work with no extra pay. -____-
@HopelessN00b Stop being helpful. You're ruining the curve.
23:29
@Wesley Heyyyy
@RyanRies :-|
Thought you had Vertigo and were avoiding backlit screens?
@MarkHenderson This is my 'puter time.
@freiheit which blades to get?
@MichaelHampton Actually, he gave me an idea for my quest to find something expensive and useless to put on that bottemless AMEX.
23:29
Also, I'm working on efiling my 1099s. amirite @ewwhite
BL465c!!!
Oh yes, it's almost time for the annual 1099 Bonfire.
ugggh... so much stupid
too much stupid
@Wesley I have an accountant to do that.

@Wesley I'm efiling a form 4 tonight or tommorrow.
interesting issue going on here, driving me a little nuts
23:31
@ewwhite That must be why they give them to me for like $900 a pop then... OK, how about Cisco UCS?
@SpacemanSpiff only a little?
Of course, now the challenge is how to find an organization of racist, terrorist pedophiles that I can donate 10 million dollars to, without the FBI kicking my door in.
two virtualized domain controllers, whatever host i move them to starts clocking chassis link errors in CiscoUCS
Talking about RAZOR blades.
it will even move between UCS domains
Cisco thinks something that is talking to those DCs is the cause
@MichaelHampton Democrats are the racist party?
@MDMarra they fought for Jim Crow laws, so yes
@MDMarra Where have you been?
23:33
@ewwhite You have to be successful and get people to pay you in order to afford that. =/
@MichaelHampton Yeah, the US government was my first thought, but for some reason, they don't have the reputation of being racist, terrorist pedophiles, and that's important for my purposes.
@HopelessN00b Oh...that's a little more difficult.
@MDMarra Abe Lincoln founded the Republican party, didn't he?
If you guys say so!
@MDMarra 100 years ago, Democrats were definitely the racist party, yes. That hasn't been true for a few decades now, though.
23:36
@HopelessN00b Bitcoin, use bitcoin. All the kewl kids are doing it.
What it meant to be a Republican and what it meant to be a Democrat were completely different during the time of, e.g., Abe Lincoln.
@MichaelHampton Yeah. If I have to, I suppose I could give 5 million to the KKK, 5 million to Al-Qeaeda and 5 million to NAMBLA. Probably do less damage than giving 10 million to the government as well, so that's a plus.
I want to start my own party, right after I become dictator for life.
@RyanRies There used to be liberal republicans.
Hell, "liberal" used to mean something else entirely.
23:37
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd member of the KKK, democrat, left the Senate upon death
@MDMarra Uhuh. And there are millions of racist Democrats in the deep south. So what?
that's hardly decades ago.
@RyJones "the racist party" != "there are some racists in the party"
which party, exactly, is pushing race based preference systems in the US?
@freiheit Y'all got nothing to complain about. We have a bigot, misogynistic, equal-rights-hating racist running our country at the moment
If your president wasn't black he'd probably be sucking his dick and sticking his nose up his ass right now (like his predecessor did to George W Bush)
23:43
@MarkHenderson das racest
@freiheit Yeah, think about that statement for the moment and parse it against the stereotype of the Republicans being the racist party.
YOU'RE ALL RACIST!!
Everything is racist
What? I hate stupid people equally, regardless of color.
@MichaelHampton The problem is that people conflate "stupid" with "has opinions differing to mine"
23:45
In recent history, it's been republicans trying to push things like voter ID laws in swing states to make more hurdles for people in dense urban areas (black people) when voting because their demographic is likely to vote democrat. So maybe racism is just the side effect of trying to stack the deck
Yeah when a black person tells me they vote Republican I assume a) they're extremely wealthy or b) they don't know that they're batting for the wrong team
@JoelESalas I'm not racist. I hate EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING.
I don't even discriminate against stupid people. I just hate everyone who isn't me.
@MDMarra Of course that's just a response to the Democrats having people go and vote sevral times in several different precincts. Every damn election, all over the country. Hell, up here in NH they bring them in from Massachusetts by the busload.
That's no different than the two centuries of Jerrymandering voting districts to secure seats, yet the Democrats don't get blamed for being racists because they shoved all the minorities into one voting district or another.

So... why does the voter ID thing make the Republicans racist?
23:48
@MichaelHampton I lived in MA for 24 years - never heard of that
@MDMarra And how active were you in the Democratic party?
If you're asking if I worked for any campaigns or anything, I did not
@HopelessN00b Because it's a law targeted at black people to suppress their vote?
Not to mention probably unconstitutional
In PA it was stuck down, for example
So now they say "May I please see your ID" and I smile and say "No, you may not"
How is it targeted at black people?
@HopelessN00b Historically, both parties have participated in the Gerrymandering, because they both preferred to have 1 easy seat than 2 seats they had to fight for. Technically the voter ID thing is probably more targeting an economic class than a race, per se; but race and class are so heavily intertwined in the US that it's hard to talk about them separately.
@MDMarra If you don't have ID here, you're not allowed to vote. And if you don't vote you get fined.
23:51
This conversation is bumming me out
People in the inner city are less likely to have a driver's license than people in the suburbs. Black people make up the majority of the inner city population. Black people vote strongly democrat. They don't want them to vote democrat so they make a voter ID law hoping that people don't have the means to acquire an ID
Can we go back to talking about ZFS and complaining about cPanel
2
@JoelESalas cPanel is for republicans
@MarkHenderson If you don't eat your meat your can't have any pudding!
Did that help, @JoelESalas?
23:52
@JoelESalas I'm debugging a regular expression in another window...
Yes thank you
@MDMarra So, by extension, Europe and the rest of the Western/1st world are racist and target minorities because they require voter ID?
Good to know. I always hated the EU, now I have a good reason.
@HopelessN00b If they tried to do it a month before the election....
@HopelessN00b All in favor of Larry Ellison sponsored rectal probes, say aye!
No, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with preventing people from voting twice, or preventing noncitizens from voting.
23:54
This does prove that no matter what part is in office, Larry Ellison will find some way to sell someone a database.
@MichaelHampton I'd think you'd be on the side of not putting obstacles in between the people and their vote
Like how there used to be written tests to "ensure an educated electorate" and those were struck down
@MDMarra You can't pick a month out of the year that isn't "a month before the election," because there's either an election that month, or the media's already talking about it. That's completely disingenuous.
@HopelessN00b Let me rephrase - in PA this happened 1-2 months before the general election for the president of the united states
@MDMarra Vote early and vote often
@MDMarra And in the border states, it's been happening for years.
Nothing like urgency to get the ball rolling on changing something. As in "hey, there's an election coming up... maybe we oughta do something about voter fraud before we start taking votes."
You say potato, I say voter suppression
23:58
So you're OK with voter fraud, as long as "everyone" gets to vote, is that what you're saying?
@MichaelHampton they find endless ballot boxes stuffed full of ballots voting 100% democrat here in Seattle when it looks like a Democrat is going to lose
I'm saying that if you're going to introduce a drastic change to voting in the national election, you shouldn't introduce it immediately before a general election for president, and it shouldn't have the largest impact on a demographic that votes strongly against you
