@MichaelHampton I'm looking at either the RHEL software collection or being really quick to get RHEL7 up and running. (I have several months to worry about it)
Except getting RHEL7 going right requires upgrading our puppet server stuff, since RHEL7's ruby is too new for a 2.x puppet.
I kept meaning to get around to working on that puppet thing...
@MichaelHampton A local mirror of Remi
@freiheit I've deployed a couple of things onto Fedora, with plans to migrate them onto RHEL 7 when it's available.
lol, Linux config management
@freiheit You really need to update your puppet.
@JoelESalas yes. yes I do.
00:01
@JoelESalas to something spelled "chef"
Oh god, not another religious debate.
@RyJones whatever
guys i know that's not a live support but i searched alot and alot now more than 20 hour searching for a solution for How to connect from centos to l2tp vpn server using command line
i hope if any one here could help me
http://serverfault.com/questions/567929/how-to-connect-from-centos-to-l2tp-vpn-server-using-command-line
@user205537 Are you really using RHEL4?
no iam using centos 6
00:03
@user205537 Your question should explain exactly what you did, in detail. It's not sufficient to only link to some external resource and say you followed it. You also need to include exactly the errors you received.
@user205537 Then why have you linked to docs from RHEL 4, which is about a decade old now?
if i found a way i will tell you what is the errors i found :D
@RyJones Chef is for amateurs
but untill now i don't find a way
the same documentation is on centos
You're not using CentOS 4
00:04
@user205537 4 != 6
i mean in centos wiki you will find the same thing
RHEL 4 documentation isn't the same as CentOS 6
oO
do you have an idea for doing that in centos 6 using command line?
RHEL 6 == CentOS6
Find the RHEL 6 documentation?
00:05
all people are explain that in desktop environment :D
only in ubuntu command line its so easy
3
okay i will search in centos 6 documentation thanks

Q: 64bit vs 32bit on mobile devices with 2gb ram - is there any sense?

ex3vI'm not sure if this question fits ServerFault, but I hope it does. Today I took part in na interesting discussion. Someone said that's great that Apple goes 64bit with their iPhone 5S. Of course I mentioned about no need for 64bits paired with 2 gigs of RAM, but then I started to wonder - is the...

@user205537 Yeah. i agree
Yep, bash is so much better on Ubuntu
@MDMarra Ubuntu doesn't use bash.
wait
since when
00:07
Dash dude
Ubuntu has bash available, but uses dash as the default shell.
since like 5 years?
...since when
Well, I guess i've just dated my Ubuntu experience
Ever wonder why nothing that was written for RHEL EVER works on ubuntu?
Since Lucid, or so.
00:08
no packages, no installers, etc?
it's because of dash
Yes, and I've also noticed how programs written for Ubuntu never work on RHEL...but in those cases it's the developer's fault.
@MichaelHampton How are those Fedora servers holding up? I'm halfway tempted to test some stuff on it...
@MichaelHampton no it does not.
@MichaelHampton /bin/sh is dash, but bash is the default interactive shell.
@DennisKaarsemaker fffff are you SERIOUS? that explains everything
Fuck that's pants-on-head retarded
2
lol
00:10
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Deployment_Guide/sec-Establishing_a_VPN_Connection.html
another explanation in desktop environment :D
@JoelESalas it was an attempt to speed up booting without going for an actual init system
@DennisKaarsemaker I get that, it just explains why scripting anything was about 95% ok and then 5% FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
it's about as retarted as writing #!/bin/sh as interpreter and using features that are bash-only
so the blame is 50/50
if you want to use bash features, use #!/bin/bash
I always do #!/bin/bash because I don't hate America
respect
00:12
then you don't run into dash issues :)
just a simple question guys why every one in rhel or centos provide an explanation for how to establish vpn connection in desktop environment and never explained how to do that using command line! :D
@JoelESalas My Zabbix server is solid. My FreeIPA server I'm holding on F19 because of some late-breaking bugs in F20 that I haven't heard are fixed yet.
@user205537 You should be looking at the syntax on how to create the interface
Then you just use ifup <vpn-interface> to start the connection
@MDMarra ...at least in theory.
00:21
@JoelESalas Though it seems they have resolved those issues since last time I looked. And the new asterisk server isn't in production yet, but it also appears solid so far.
00:32
@MDMarra i think iam going to install x on vps and add l2tp vpn to see what's happen in the background
route & iptables & interfaces
@user205537: don't forget to use a headless x server, not a regular one.
(There, that should get you started ;))
note the keywords. Learn the Google.
@MichaelHampton Just today there was an SELinux issue

@mossy I'd be more inclined to ask why?
@jscott To be honest, i'm kinda bored and want to route all my traffic through DD-WRT -> VPN
Can't hurt, right?
02:07
@mossy Carry on then. :) It certainly won't hurt anything.
@jscott :D
Faster than I expected.
02:22
@mossy That's what she said
@JoelESalas Oh no! What did you do?
02:39
@mossy But why?
@MichaelHampton Why VPN or why use a VPN provider?
@mossy Why VPN at all?
@MichaelHampton So i can read conspiracy theories and do other weird things online.
@MichaelHampton ( My buddy gave me a key for sparklabs.com/viscosity )
Decided to use it.
Then I decided I want to route my network through DD-WRT
and here i am.
Reading conspiracy theories and watching laggy Netflix.
Yeah, if I wanted to watch Seasons 1-87 of "Buffering" I would get a VPN.
3
haha
I like this client though. Pretty nice.
03:15
So @citi/@Citibank sold my loan servicing to #Seterus, who charge $5 for online payments. Guess we'll be killing some trees, eh? Ridiculous.
That would upset me less if Seterus wasn't an IBM company
It's the 21st century - do any of you folks have a mortgage company that actually charges you to give them money?
@voretaq7 The local utilities company here charges for online payments and they will only do auto-pay from a checking account.
Of note, it appears at least some of their IT is built upon Notes/Domino as the favicon is pervasive throughout various portions of their customer service site.
@jscott so does ours. They get paper cheques from me too
I don't get it. Processing the paper has to cost them more too
The city here also charges for online payments of fees, parking tickets, etc. Nice little way to grab a few extra bucks I suppose.
03:38
@jscott yeah that's pretty normal here too. But companies you have an established business relationship with - that bugs me
especially when they call it a "convenience fee"
If the city wanted to make it convenient, they could just not issue the damn parking ticket in the first place.
@voretaq7 The ol' switcheroo.
@MichaelHampton But how would they cover the cost of their parking-meter-free-parking-meter-computer-thing?
They ripped out the coin meters and installed some RedBox-style thing that prints a receipt you place on your dash.
@jscott True story. My gf got one of these little parking meter computer things that sits on her dashboard when she parks downtown. They load US dollars on it and then she hits the button whenever she parks in one of the various zones. It turns out that for over a year it never took off any credit, because its clock was 12 hours off. AM versus PM.
And of course the parking nazis didn't notice for a very, very long time.
@MichaelHampton awesomesauce.
@MichaelHampton Ha! Well at least they're utilizing their information systems for efficiency.
03:44
Efficiency my ass.
04:22
@MDMarra Solaris.
@user205537 cnetworkmanager (if it's set up in Network Manager) or just run openvpn.
Thalmic Labs - holy shit. These guys have the secret sauce. Wearable armband that picks up your arm movements. And hand gestures. Without a camera. It picks up the muscle movements in your arm to figure out what your hand is doing.
@MikeyB: I can see that being useful for prostetics.

I forgot how much I hated replacing laptop screens. now I have been reminded.
still not something I would pay someone $100 to do for me though.
@FalconMomot Weird. I replaced the screen in my netbook in about 10 minutes. It was quite simple.
@MichaelHampton it's not the complexity, but the stupid snaps.
this one is annoying because it has a screen cover
@FalconMomot Oh yeah, I had to be careful to not break the plastic.
and also there is some light piping to worry about underneath
and now I have a matte screen (unlike the original), 720p (unlike the other replacement), and not cracked.
Yeah, "not cracked" is the best part.

@ewwhite to be totally honest, I'm starting to lean more against Dell than HP.. Their support has been ten times better than HP (in my experience atleast), they don't block customers from using third party disks (but they warn you), and their pricing is nice..
Dell have been good for all the time I've used them at the college. Not perfect, but good... and very willing to fix things with minimal disruption to us when "not perfect" ended up with some kind of fuckup.
They've always delivered when it comes to ProSupport
they even sent out an engineer to change the motherboard on a set of Dell Vostro PC's we bought
yep, they've been good to us like that
HP needed 8 engineer visits to replace a single CPU
shame that they killed off the vostro desktop line, but the new optiplex line is great value
15:55
that's scary. Did they farm it out to a 3rd party group of dumbasses or what?
@DennisKaarsemaker Dell ProSupport always arrive with new parts if I tell them what parts are bad
but I'm peanuts compared to you guys..
HP does too, but they consistently bring incompatible parts
Dell (we use dell workstations) is great
I wish we used dell workstations
16:10
@pauska I've had good and bad experiences with both
I like Dell's service tag and no-questions-asked repair policy
but I don't like their firmware management
HP support is more of a bitch to get through now, but it's because my systems are aging...
My HP pricing is better than Dell... so that helps... and the HP Linux support is better.
I don't like LSI RAID controllers... MegaCLI is a bitch. So HP wins on that front
I think the Gen8 HP systems and their disk compatibility issues is a big lose.

Just popped in to say I'm now a Citrix Certified Expert. Please hire me for all your Citrix needs
3
@Dan Did they throw in a NetWare certification as well?
Dan
Dan
@ScottPack I'm assuming that's a dig, but I don't understand?
@Dan I felt it necessary to say something snarky but it's the best I could come up with. I was implying Citrix was a dead technology, but honestly? I work at a university. What would I know.
Citrix is far from dead, quite the opposite in fact
Dan
Dan
@ScottPack Far from it - I've been making a very healthy living from installing it for the last 3 years or so :) With the buzziness of cloud computing, mobile working and so on it's becoming more relevant all of the time
16:41
I hear Citrix and it causes the same reaction as MPLS. It's been around so long it has to be dead but is, instead, still a great tool for many jobs.
Dan
Dan
@ScottPack Haha, they've been reasonably good at moving with the times I think
And the advantages of centralisation never really go away
16:55
I don't disagree.
Dan
Dan
I do know what you mean - if people haven't kept current, they presume you're talking old skool Server 2003 machines and things

Anyhow, time to eat lunch and I think I have to pee.

[SUM] 0.0-10.5 sec 8355840 KBytes 6508742 Kbits/sec
that's between two identical VM's, running on the same esxi host, which has 2x10gbit network for the VM's
I thought traffic didn't even leave the NIC when the VM's are on the same host.. 6gbit/s isn't exactly amazing
Dan
Dan
What about storage?
this doesn't use storage
it's iperf
Dan
Dan
Oh
and no matter what I try, I can't get a single data stream to go beyond 500mbit/s
I just checked, zero disk activity while doing the tests
Dan
Dan
Is this production? Can you pull the physical cable to ensure it's inter-host traffic?
Or try it on a vswitch with no nics
17:26
yeah it's production
I'm going to unplug one of the switches and test isolated

both are using roughly 50% cpu during the tests

the network adapter shouldn't even be used here.. it's two VM's on the same host, with the same vswitch

Dan
@Hennes What's the setup and how are they connecting
@ewwhite vm version 9, latest tools, fresh 2012 R2 install etc yadda yadda
ESXi build number
17:34
I'm going to set up two CentOS vm's tomorrow and see how they behave
No idea. Just responding to the 'all Citrix needs' bait'.
I can probably solve it on my own, but I did all of 30 seconds research since the matter was not urgent and I had a lot of deadlines. I can live with 16 colours.
5.1.0, 1483097
But basically: Open a bookmark to a website called 'our citrix server'. Log in with an AD account. That displays a desktop in plenty colours. Then start a program which we use since 1988 (!) and I get 16 colour while my cow-orkers get many more colours.
Dan
Dan
@Hennes It may be set incorrectly on the Web Interface server, or the Citrix policies but it's hard to give any direction without knowing anything about the setup ;)
Since we had a deadline and the client was only needed to see if it loaded without syntax errors I just ignored the lack of colours.
17:36
@pauska running it now
Hmm, how do you get the SUM?
Dan
Dan
@Hennes Do you use multiple monitors?
Yes. We all do.
It's running at 1.5Gb for me
Dan
Dan
@Hennes That can cause colour degradation, but you say JUST you experience it? I'd confirm that first, and then double check your ICA Client/Citrix Receiver version
A HP elitebook with some docking station. One low hight (aka widescreen) regular monitor and a extrememly low height (22' 16:9) TN based widescreen which I rotated 90 degree sine I have to work with very long lists and a save button only on top of that list
The client receiver is set to 32 bits colour
Dan
Dan
17:40
I'd try it from a co-workers PC first, you need to establish whether it's just you - but like I say, it's very tough to hazard any guesses given that it could be one of at least 6 or 7 very different versions of Citrix
Aye. Esp. since we had to install the clients on our own.
Dan
Dan
It's worth trying with just one monitor plugged in though
@ewwhite windows or linux?
linux
I will try. I will also settle for one 4k monitor. :)
17:41
it runs for 100 seconds or something.. the sum comes last
@pauska Oh, mine ran for 60 seconds
no sum
but I'm probably doing it wrong
what version of iperf?
2.0.5
so I just tested a single stream...
I got the laptop at home, I can try with one monitor. :)
[  3]  0.0-30.0 sec  62.0 GBytes  17.8 Gbits/sec
but I don't even know why I'm getting that...
the intermediate results from the iperf string you gave were...
[126] 58.0-59.0 sec  58368 KBytes  478151 Kbits/sec
[141] 58.0-59.0 sec  56320 KBytes  461373 Kbits/sec
[142] 58.0-59.0 sec  77824 KBytes  637534 Kbits/sec
[140] 58.0-59.0 sec  57344 KBytes  469762 Kbits/sec
[161] 58.0-59.0 sec  57344 KBytes  469762 Kbits/sec
[160] 58.0-59.0 sec  58368 KBytes  478151 Kbits/sec
[163] 58.0-59.0 sec  76800 KBytes  629146 Kbits/sec
[162] 58.0-59.0 sec  59392 KBytes  486539 Kbits/sec
[182] 58.0-59.0 sec  55296 KBytes  452985 Kbits/sec
[185] 58.0-59.0 sec  55296 KBytes  452985 Kbits/sec
17:45
yeah those are some of the parallel streams
Dan
Dan
@Hennes Just for some background, Citrix has some defined limitations on the amount of graphical memory it will use for each session - if you exceed it, it will drop your resolution and/or colour depth to compensate
you gotta sum that together
Ah. Nice to know.
17gbit/s.. right
what the fuck is wrong with my esxi :(
I am only using 1600x900 and I think 1080x1920 at wiork.
Nothing extreme
17:46
@ewwhite do you have LSO or RSS disabled in your guests?
@pauska i'm on 5.5... and I haven't made any guest tuning
those are a couple of produce systems on the same host.
oh, but it's a dvSwitch

Why do people think like this - is it not enough to simply be good at your job?
@ewwhite are these vms you can take offline?
could you put them on a vswitch without any nics attached and see if the results stay the same?
17:48
my wife is like that... "nobody else can do my job!!!"
"they're not good enough"
"They make too many mistakes"
@pauska let me check...
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite I've spoken my philosophies here a million times, but I stand by them. Don't ever try and change a companies politics and don't ever think they need you.
@pauska not at the moment... I'll be able to later. About to go drive to install a new VMware environment.
@Dan I was very surprised at how well companies coped when I left (or they fired me)
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite It's so common - a good friend of mine absolutely thrives off the thought that he's single handedly saving them somehow. He even turned down an awesome secondment opportunity because he felt they "needed" him back at his home office
Some firms struggled... some made mistakes... Some just wanted me out and didn't care about the consequences...
so now I really do believe people are replaceable...
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite I just remind myself that the company was here before and will be here after. Besides, if you hoard information, it makes handover a complete arse
17:57
and in America, you can't trust or rely on employer loyalty.... gotta take care of yourself first.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite I think it's the same anywhere - I am loyal to a reasonably degree, but I definitely agree there's only one person looking after me
@Dan at the cloud company I was at, there was a dude who hoarded storage and hardware information. But he became the bottleneck on every project, and the company couldn't see it.
Dan
Dan
I commented on that answer - but I know first hand (I worker for a partner company) of a company who had built a platform on top of an extremely custom operating system. The guy who wrote it had worked with them for 10 years and was considered the oracle.

Anyway, turns out he was also a prick so one day they fired him. Don't get me wrong, it was clearly a painful time for the company but they got someone new in, started nearly from scratch and from what I gather - they're doing fine
My old produce software company did that to me.
I was a dick, they fired me...
30% of their clients stuck with me.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite :D
18:00
that started my business 5.5 years ago
they went through 6 engineers until that side of their business stabilized
Dan
Dan
ouch
and I still manage a good number of their client's systems
but even in my case, there are ways to deal with a troublesome, but talented employee
anywho, I'm telling my wife not to hoard and assume other people are stupid
Dan
Dan
I suppose the issue with my (and perhaps your) attitude, is that I never really let myself feel "part" of a company. I can like a job, but I never quite hit that point where it defines me - that can be seen as quite flaky and it's shown pretty obviously by my "no more than 2.5 years before a new job" attitude
It's part of why I'm hoping contracting will be a better fit for me.
it is...
I'm not "one of the guys" either
I do good work... I can be smart sometimes... but I always see myself as being on the outside
Dan
Dan
Weird, isn't it?
My boss played the "Guess who is leaving" game with another techie when he was telling people I was going - I was the first guess* based simply on the fact that he doubted anybody else would actually leave.

*After guessing one of the sales guys had been sacked!
18:17
I'm not sure what it is. I think I must not like people... Or I'm greedy... Or something.
Dan
Dan
Mine's the latter, and a sort of role based ADHD. I get on great with people, I just get bored of the same job - no matter how much it changes
But mainly, I want to be rich
Another issue is that I tend to get special privileges at work...
Because I'm the one who worked 36-hours straight to recover data... Or finds some obscure VMware/Linux bug...
But I'm not good at the day-to-day work..
What's rich in the UK?
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Who knows! I was being a little flippant, but I do have targets
Just remember that it's not about how hard you work ;)
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite I keep trying to tell people that!
18:24
It's about listening and being better at anticipating clients' needs than the next guy.
Dan
Dan
Listening would be another word for that
Heh, kinda... But I do try to think ahead of client needs...
