it's sad but true
they can also tell you "yeah you walk retarded, you need to pull your shoulders back, do these exercises"
yep, I got a lot of that
Also always "you sit too much, get a standing desk"
lol no, not a chance
Osteopathy is also different from chiropractory.
Anonymous
wot is medicine
00:03
@JoelESalas why not? I have one (with an engine), it's great to stand some when doing long hours
@JoelESalas I asked for one of those desks that you can raise/lower for stand/sit. My boss saw the price and laughed at me
People who study osteopathy are actual doctors. Chiropractors pop your joints.
@MarkHenderson Same here
@ScottPack Hey man, my chiropractor went to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, he's a trained professional
Had any fish tacos yet today?
I can't eat those anymore, they have gluten.
00:10
@MarkHenderson One of my co-workers built his own. Basically bolted existing desktop onto the lift-stand thingy...
@Joel So you're on the free range gluten free vegan cruelty free fish tacos? Never before have you been so obviously a Las Angelean.
Truth be told that would also fit into Athena, OH pretty seamlessly.
fucking hipsters
2
@JoelESalas By choice, or celiac?
@voretaq7 Or just descendants of hippies. The only way to tell the difference these days is how tightly the pants fit and how recently they bathed.
@ScottPack Fun Fact: All hipsters are women. Nobody's man parts fit into those jeans.
00:19
That is an excellent observation.
old, but still funny

@ShaneMadden Celiac, it's rather gross
Pphhttp
@pauska aLSO LONG outed as fake
00:34
@ScottPack Hipsters are faux-bohemian trust fund kids, hippies are one with nature and discard their possessions and shit
I'm tired of seeing it being thrown around now that cochella is back
also; chick is hot. So don't care.
@MarkHenderson tittayyyys
@Joel I lived for nearly 10 years in a hippie hotbed. I'm well acquainted.
@ScottPack Do you dislike hipsters???
@Joel I dislike annoying people.
Anonymous
00:40
@pauska is that the coachella fake producer video?
Anonymous
i fucking irloled
Anonymous
@MarkHenderson where was it outted?
Don't remember. I twas a kimmy kimmel skit and they re-dubbed the interviewers questions
@MarkHenderson that was the first thought for me as well, so I searched the net for a while.. can't really find any evidence that it was fake?
@pauska No; now that I've done some googling too. But it's tough because when you insert "fake" into your serach terms, it talks finds the "fake bands" which doesn't fucking help
So I tried "Dubbed" but I only found livejournal comments
So now I'm less sure; but I was quite confident at the time that it was dubbed

man... I feel old
I remember every single one of those songs...
thats 15 years ago...
@MattBear '99 wasn't that long ago
@MarkHenderson 90's music is gonna be to my kids, what 70's music was to my dad...
and my kids only got another 10 years before she's listening to it all, and thinking "god Dad's old!"
@MattBear I make sure that my son listens to a lot of 90's and 00's music
Mainly cos he spends a lot of time in my car and my iPod basically stops at 2010
the only modern stuff I listen to anymore is country....
im really turning into my dad lol
brb, gotta go shoot my boss
@MattBear Oh god, eww
02:07
@MattBear Nope. Have never heard half of those before. And hope never to hear half of them again.
@Mark Your iPod hits 2010?
Anonymous
@MattBear what?!
Anonymous
there's no real mainstream country in 2013
Anonymous
i think that was clear with the barely remix of cruise hitting billboard as the best selling single for 40 years
@ScottPack This is a problem? :P
The vast majority of it is 94-2004 but there's a collection from 05-10

My collection is mostly indie EDM with a pinch of more commercial EDM with some Chilean folklore and four or six pop tracks I like

@MattBear when did listening to indie/a little less mainstream/sorta underground music become hipster?
@PatoSáinz Since you're only 12 years old

@JourneymanGeek nope nope nope nope
@PatoSáinz see, that is what a hipster would say.
3
@Matt Red Hot Chilli Pipers are fun
@PatoSáinz Every artist is a sellout
@PatoSáinz Right because all artists should work at mcdonalds to pay their rent
As I see it, I vote with my wallet or my torrent client.
Anonymous
02:28
@MarkHenderson you think I just said they should work for free?
and there is nothing wrong with selling your music.... or modifying it a bit to actually sell
Anonymous
I mean, they shouldn't shift their style and essence just because "that song sells more"
@PatoSáinz: what does 'sell out' mean here?
Anonymous
Anonymous
that means to sell out
Anonymous
02:29
the same fucking song, in different pitches, slightly different drum kits
Anonymous
all topping the beatport charts
@PatoSáinz why? dont we get mad at software companies for not doing the exact same thing?
@MattBear: or even madden at them
Anonymous
@MattBear when did software = music?
what was that racket?
02:30
@PatoSáinz both = intellectual property
Anonymous
@MattBear so is a book
@PatoSáinz You said that they shouldn't sign to a label that's going to pay them money
more impostantly, both games and music are creative works
Anonymous
@MarkHenderson there are good labels and also, most times, it isn't the label's fault
@PatoSáinz yup, and editors jobs are to tell the writer what to do in order to sell
02:31
and once again, if you don't like it, vote with your wallet (or suitable alternative!)
@PatoSáinz Of course they should. There will be another shitty underground band to fill the hole that they leave once they can actually pay their rent
Anonymous
I know artists can't survive on ramen for so long
Anonymous
@MattBear i don't see a lot of 50 shades copycats
@MarkHenderson Yes, I've tried to use a WiFi network with more than 15 people on it. Surprisingly, it worked pretty well. Then again, I was running it...
Personally I think musicians should feel free to do what they want with their own music. If that means changing it to sell better fine.
02:32
@PatoSáinz: you're not looking hard enough, keep it up
Anonymous
@MarkHenderson case example: martin garrix and a horrible label
@PatoSáinz I have no idea who that is
@PatoSáinz but you see a WHOLE LOT of Lord of The Rings copy cats
Anonymous
Martin Garrix didn't even have a chance to sell out because he was born as one
Anonymous
@MattBear I've seen a lot of Jule Verne copycats... :s
02:33
@MichaelHampton: Its not just your AP, its the other 25 APs in the neigbourhood
technically 50 shades started as a copycat of twilight.
Anonymous
@MarkHenderson some guy who made this song "animals" that was topping charts and etc, and now he made it to platinum
@JourneymanGeek Oh, I didn't have that problem. It was in the middle of nowhere, and exactly one other WiFi network around.
@MichaelHampton: precisely ;p
Anonymous
Animals was a good song, problem is, it was obvious that it was using "a formula for success"
Anonymous
aka elements from other songs
02:34
@JourneymanGeek and twilight started out as "the gayest thing ever written, and retarded to boot"
Anonymous
and they were recognizable
Anonymous
but Martin wasn't a known producer, so Spinnin' Records did some shady marketing
wait... it still is, it did'nt sell out!
@JourneymanGeek I'm almost certainly going to do it again this summer.
Anonymous
02:34
@JourneymanGeek shitty spanish translation
Given that there are only 8 notes aren't all songs elements from other songs?
Anonymous
@ScottPack you know i don't mean that
@ScottPack: Unless you used an alternate scale system ;p
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek greek :)
@Pato Shush. I'm troll feeding.
02:36
(I probably should shut up now. I know they exist, I'm just not classically trained enough to remember what they are)
@Journey Don't be absurd. Such things don't actually exist.
@ScottPack: I reject your reality and substitute my own...
Anonymous
so to wrap it out, unknown producer makes an "good" unoriginal song with proven working elements from 5 other good, original songs that made it to the chartsm, producer was unknown so label knowingly "mispublished" the song as a collab with said producer and other two very known producers after it was released
actually, having recorded hours of religious music, in these scales, pro bono, I think your reality sounds better.
Anonymous
it's basically the cancer that's killing EDM

Jun 24 '13 at 3:16, by Michael Hampton
Oh... I also implemented a captive portal Wi-Fi for the campground and sold access to the Internet all week...
Go back to the transcript for pictures of my "enterprise" wireless network and "mobile datacenter"...
@Journey I don't so much much mind different tonalities. It's a nice change of pace.
@MichaelHampton: that is... beautiful
Anonymous
@MattBear btw not every artist is a sellout imo
02:40
even has duct tape.
Anonymous
even the most succesful ones
Anonymous
@MattBear examples: deadmau5's latest album, was piano only, he just did what he wanted. Avicii's latest album and his performance at Ultra, fans bitching about it being "too country" and having kazoos and shit, he released it anyway and... Wake Me Up made it to #1 in billboard
@PatoSáinz and not every software company is a sellout... Apple just makes shit, and tells you to like it
@PatoSáinz but if they didn't play the game in order to become successful, would anyone bother to listen to their experimental/art stuff? Or would they be living in their parents basements, working at McDonalds... But still have their integrity intact
Anonymous
02:45
@MattBear even their prior hits weren't untrue to their essence
@PatoSáinz Beatles, starting out were pretty basic, then they began doing all the experimental artistic music...
@JourneymanGeek @MarkHenderson So yes, we peaked at 45 users on Thursday night and nobody had any issues watching YouTube or anything else. Most everybody said they were surprised how fast it was - and it was much faster than the campground's own WiFi.
@MichaelHampton You probably had proper equipment
@MarkHenderson A $25 TP-link router and a $300 netbook
Anonymous
@MichaelHampton you are my dream sysadmin
02:49
I've had too many wifi issues :/
This year I'll be putting up a couple of extra hotspots with WDS backhaul
@PatoSáinz selling out seems so horrible... untill all of a sudden you have 20 million fans who will now listen to your "artistic" attempts, whereas before, labels would of laughed at you
I mean, I've sorted most of the obvious ones out, but there's still wierdness like wireless dropping out along a particular beam in my apartment
Anonymous
@MattBear there's a margin where selling out stops being "good" bro
Anonymous
Take Pitbull, he started as a poor reggaeton cuban
02:50
@JourneymanGeek There's probably a metal pipe in the wall or something
Anonymous
then he went to some pseudo-EDM Miami-Rich Mister-Worldwide
Anonymous
now he is cowboy rapping... wat
@PatoSáinz Oh yeah? Just imagine what I could do with REAL equipment!
Anonymous
@MichaelHampton network miracles
@MichaelHampton: its a beam, not a wall. I quite literally have wireless drop out from full strength to nothing when I walk under that beam
02:51
selling out = Iggy Pop selling car insurance
ended up using homeplug and a spare router
@MattBear Rock n roll doesn't offer much in the way of retirement plan options.
@jscott I could retire pretty comfortable if I pulled in 20 million in 1 year
safe as hell investments, 5% ROI would still net me like 1 mill a year
Anonymous
why is reddit always angsty
@PatoSáinz You do not want an answer to that.
02:55
@PatoSáinz Yeah and he is probably sleeping in a bed full of $100 notes next to a supermodel
Selling out clearly hasn't worked out for him
Anonymous
@MarkHenderson of course he may value money and lifestyle more than the craft
Anonymous
@MichaelHampton I do
@PatoSáinz Of course he does. Look at the horrible "music" he produces
@PatoSáinz I value money then my craft :p
if apple offered me $10 million dollars to endorse their products, hell yeah I would sell out
02:57
with enough money, I can always do my craft myself, for my own love of it ;p
@ScottPack so good.
(ref. bagpipe metal)
@Falcon You are awfully splendid for one of your kind.

> A programmer was troubled and sad, so he went to see his Master.

“Nobody recognizes my work” the programmer said with woeful voice.

The Master took him to a temple with a beautiful stone statue in the center and said “If you want your work to be recognized you must be like the person who made this statue”.

They kept walking for a couple of minutes util the programmer asked “Who made it?”.

“I don’t know” replied the Master.

Suddenly, the programmer was enlightened.

03:30
@PatoSáinz I've never really understood those koans
@JoelESalas I read it and was enlightened.
@MichaelHampton This is the fifth time I've read it and I still don't feel like I get it
@JoelESalas Have you ever written code that other people use?
I read it several times and still don't care.
@MichaelHampton yeeeees?
@ScottPack lol'd
03:36
@JoelESalas Do they remember you, or the program?
@JoelESalas And then I realised no one gets koans. And then, I was enlightened. No wait, actually, I gotta pee, BRB.
@MichaelHampton If they remember you, it's because they fucking hate you, so the program
Suddenly, @JoelESalas was enlightened.
Thank you
How can the #internetofthings come to fruition if I can't get #wifi in the bathroom??
@JoelESalas: IP over sewer lines?
03:39
I get wifi in the bathroom. But then again I have one hell of an antenna on my AP.
So far every single time something is on the cusp of getting popular, I say "My god that's fucking retarded, I really hope that doesn't become successful"
See: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Vine
@JoelESalas: I can't think of any sysadmin type who's actually excited over the internet of things ;p
Its cool, sure, but oh, such a security nightmare.
I'm getting that exact same reaction with this internet of things
thinking "Holy flaming fuckballs that's so god damn retarded it's practically guaranteed to happen"
Yeah, this internet of things is going to lead me to do egress firewalling at home.
and then "how can I profit from this"
@MichaelHampton TVs are already exfiltrating the filenames of my porn!!
03:41
@JoelESalas Yep, I saw that.
@MichaelHampton: heh, I'd be tempted to airgap all those things
If it dosen't have an x86 processor, or a screen, or is named after a fruit, its not getting on the internet.
@JourneymanGeek The sysadmin part of my is dying inside; the rest of me is incredibly excited
@MarkHenderson: same way I feel
The security guy in me wants to move to a cave somewhere
I now have internet-connected lightbulbs too
(but then again, I don't trust padlocks)
03:44
Dude, Bill Gates has had a robot house for like 25 years
He has to have SOME techniques for keeping that shit safe
(It's probably not running Windows XP)
@JoelESalas Don't be so sure
Actually; he's probably on Ubuntu
@MarkHenderson Those lightbulbs are so fucking cool
@JoelESalas Yeah but you know what? After the initial novelty of making my bedroom hot pink, it kind of wore off. I set it to a nice soft white, 25% brightness, and just left it
I already had dimmers for my lights so that part wasn't new
@MarkHenderson We set it to a deep stoner purple for parties
@MarkHenderson My gf wants to get those. So she can turn the bedroom lights on and off from in bed...
03:49
... Giggity?
@MichaelHampton To do that though you have to leave the mains switch on all the time
Otherwise the bulbs disconnect from the network
Which means you can only use your smartphone for the lights
Unless you get some smart soft-switches for the lights (which is what I'm currently planning in my head)
They don't work with dimmer switches which is kind of annoying
Actuall I guess, if you're already in bed, then the lights will already be on
@MarkHenderson I don't think she would have a problem with that. Personally I'd just hack a short Python script to talk to its API and nevermind the smartphone.
@MichaelHampton My wife got pissed off and uses them like normal lights
Added bonus - turn them on/off/on/off/on and they reset to their default colour, in case she comes home at 11pm after work and the bedroom lights up green
03:52
I'm surprised @ewwhite's wife doesn't have a house full of them already.
How do you know she doesn't?
also that API is cool
@MichaelHampton I wonder if @ewwhite ever got his drill. That could be why he's not in here today. We should find out what hospital he went to.
2
just whip up some python, make it work through a sine wave over the course of a few hours
that would be so cool
@MarkHenderson Yeah, he apparently got one with hand warmers and laser sights.
looool
and a $250 trash can
03:53
@ShaneMadden Of course he did
@JoelESalas ... what does it do?
Fucking follow you around?
Empty itself?
It opens and closes its own lid.
@MichaelHampton .. that's it?
Batteries not included.
@MarkHenderson simplehuman.com/…
Actually I think he got the 55 liter model.
> so throwing trash away is quick, efficient, and hassle-free
Riiight because throwing away rubbish was SO FUCKING HARD before your invention
Watching the videos, it seems to make throwing your rubbish out a slower process cos you have to wait for the bin to open rather than having the lid fling open at 10,000mph as you stomp on the lever
@MarkHenderson We have one, and, yep, pretty much.
04:01
We have had a step can. It was nice enough, you step on the lever and the lid flies open. Until the day the lid flew off into next week.
Our kitchen rubbish bin is a bag in the small rinsing side of the sink. Just throw crap in there, no need to wait for it to open. At the end of the day, tie it up, throw it in the big bin outside.
What I'd really like is an in-sink-erator. No need for a bin for most things.
@MarkHenderson You don't have one? They're in every kitchen here.
@MarkHenderson the sewage treatment people dislike your kind.
@ShaneMadden Nah pretty rare here
@voretaq7 Haha well I'd ideally like one that diverts so I can compost it
@MarkHenderson Right. We have one similar to this one.
04:04
We should get one of those. Preferably one that opens as you open the door
@MarkHenderson Or when you wave your hand over it.
@MichaelHampton sorcery!
@MarkHenderson This sounds trivial with a pulley system
@MarkHenderson I don't know why, but this reminded me of the YouTube video where a guys iRobot tried to clean up dog shit while he was out but instead pushed it all over his house.
@mossy Haha thats awesome
04:06
10/10
@mossy Ok we need a link stat.
hold on i'll find the video lol
@mossy <applause>
hahahahaha. this is fantastic

Youtube suggested that ^

@MichaelHampton But then you don't have to worry with pesky permissions! Everything jus tworks!
@MarkHenderson Yep, right up until the time I find a bug in your app, get in, and make your server my home away from home.
Just a simple upload bug would do it...let me upload ../../../../../../../../root/.ssh/authorized_keys and you're mine.
