@freiheit mmmmm beeeeeer
cool shit
@freiheit Now all we need is a bike shop with a microbrewery in the back.
@MichaelHampton Would you settle for a microbrewery's bicycle-mounted beer bar?
Fucking Flickr.
(surprised i found it in texas, not portland, though)
19:41
Oooo. Adding a waypoint for that.
@MichaelHampton Actually, I found that image off of the bike builder's site, because I knew that brewery had had that bike made... (they've got some pretty good beers, too)
The shame... I'm working on a customer's site....
and there's no reverse DNS...
DHCP range is .1-.254
a few nmaps helped me find their switches... all DHCP
ProCurve 2910al-48G-PoE Switch# sh run

Running configuration:

; J9148A Configuration Editor; Created on release #W.14.03

hostname "ProCurve 2910al-48G-PoE Switch"
module 1 type J9148A
module 2 type J9165A
vlan 1
   name "DEFAULT_VLAN"
   untagged 1-48,A1
   ip address 192.168.0.28 255.255.255.0
   exit
snmp-server community "public" Unrestricted
that's the entire switch config
switches on DHCP? derp...whayyyyyyyyy
I wonder what I'd get back if I sent SNMP probes to every IP address with the community string 'public'.
@MichaelHampton Make sure to also try 'private'
19:45
@freiheit Yes, and when I'm scanning @ewwhite's blocks, also 'brazzers'.
@MichaelHampton opennms will find all sorts of ridiculousness..
but remember the logicworks SNMP community was "disabled"
@ewwhite Was that a r/w SNMP community?
@freiheit yes
sometimes r/o
So my new service is to install an Observium monitoring probe at my client sites.
I built a nice prepackaged VMware appliance and am dumping it into a few locations to see what types of things it picks up
unless it's a stupid idea...
:-x

1 hour later…
21:07
@Iain Can you help me translate some English into, uh, English?
I can try
@Iain What exactly does it mean when, for instance buying a train ticket, the price is quoted as "£25 return"?
A return fare is out and back
So you pay £25 and you are fully paid both directions?
if you're going from Liverpool to Manchester then a single is L -> M and a return is L->M->L
21:09
That seemed to be what it meant, but I wanted to be sure.
@MichaelHampton yes
We Americans must be crazy... we call those "one way" and "round trip".
I would understand the American way
At least I guessed correctly.
21:30
@Iain Does that mean the individualism, sex, guns and puritanism make sense now, too?
@freiheit I still don't get guns
@freiheit got a favoured bike route planning website? bikeroutetoaster.com is dead and I need a new one that allows me to specify how far in advance of a turn it will alert me
@Iain I use ridewithgps for route planning. I don't have a GPS that alerts ahead of turns, so not sure about that. You can add custom cuesheet entries, and might be possible to alert about those...
(If i'm worried about turns, I set my GPS to show the zoomed in route track, so that I can glance down and see if I'm taking a turn)
@Iain Blowing shit up is fun.
@freiheit what GPS have you got ?
@Iain Garmin Edge 200
ah I have a 500
BRT would let me specify say 250ft and it would alert me ahead of time. Ride with gps doesn't appear to have that option
21:42
@Iain Yeah, I'm cheap.
@freiheit I wanted cadence and heart rate
@Iain I totally get it, but I definitely didn't want to spend the extra for that stuff when I was buying my garmin... Heart rate, in particular, would've been awesome when I was really training hard, with intervals and all that stuff...
@freiheit I'm trying to do base miles this winter - it's hard going that slow but it is getting better
then in the new year I have a plan to improve my hill climbing
@Iain Like specifically forcing yourself to keep your heart rate in the low zones?
@freiheit yes, mostly zone 2
@freiheit I've also been asked to join a friend doing a one day Coast to Coast route which will be 165 miles/10K ft climbing some time late spring / early summer next year
30k in LOndon for a Web Demigod - they're pissed
22:01
@Iain is that good for london
If I were offered £30K to be a "web demigod" I would probably be insulted.
2
@Iain .... ow...
@freiheit It will be challenging
isn't £30k like fast food wages in london?
or maybe level 1 helpdesk wages?
it's cheap
22:14
You'd have to be a demigod to earn 30k in london. After all, you'll only be able to afford a couple of loaves and fishes a year to eat...
@Iain Wow, that's insane. It's 40,000 USD, which is Jr admin level, and on the low end of that.
that ain't gonna go far unless you're a miracle worker of some kind.
Although I was offered 55k to be Sr Admin at a private insurance company in North Scottsdale where the glass staircase probably cost five times that much in their trendy kewl neuvo offices.
I walked.
I don't blame you.
It's hard to compare 1:1 ... I'm at 75K USD, but that's not really that much in the danish IT pro marketplace
22:26
@MathiasR.Jessen Yeah, I'll be lucky to get that I think with the jobs I'm going after now
I'm willing to work up though. My skillz are so lame now.
I have no idea what to ask for if I was offered a job abroad
@MathiasR.Jessen One meeeelion dollars!
We can't all be like @ewwhite. =(
Dreams of gyro spits.
I have no skeeeeelz!!
Companies don't care for skillz, just buzzwords
@MathiasR.Jessen From what I could tell, in the US because of the fact that you have to buy health insurance, etc just to get on-par with what i'm used to, I needed to get a $100k salary
crazy... I think I'll start negotiating at 1 million then :)
22:30
@MathiasR.Jessen Haha well that was to compare against my current $80k salary package in AU
I don't know to the dollar what my package is, because it includes so many things
And I just got a new car with my package so that adjusts things even more. I got the impression that in the US packaging things for salary basically isn't done
I don't know about the UK or europe
@Wesley Oh psssh.
@MarkHenderson definitely not done
@Wesley Do you think I'm rich or something?
@ewwhite Makes it harder to fire someone
@ewwhite I think you're comfortable.
@MarkHenderson Yes, we like firing here in the US.
@MarkHenderson Yeah, that sounds about right. We let people fend for themselves here in the open market and people end up getting shafted. =/
Because 'merikuh.
Land of the free market, home of the... something or other that I'm too tired to be witty about.
22:35
@MarkHenderson 5+1 week paid vacation, full health-insurance beyond universal hc, 3 months+ notice with pay, paid time-off for educational purposes etc. etc.
@MathiasR.Jessen What does 5+1 week mean?
pretty standard here, market is union-controlled
I get 4 weeks paid per year
@MarkHenderson I found the number was more like 120k.
5 full weeks paid + 6 days that can used for vacation or reimbursed financially
22:37
@FalconMomot I would have needed $100k if I was relocating my whole family, but $150k if I wanted to hold my assets here and live in the US
And I sure as shit wouldn't pay me $150k
2
@FalconMomot I'm enticed to move to Canada. I need to be a citizen though to cash in on the good health care and all that?
Good news, as an Aussie coming on an E3 visa my wife can work in the US visa free and unrestricted
@Wesley I don't believe so. permanent residency is enough I think.
you should marry my sister.
@FalconMomot He so should
I have to remove hidden cameras from my shower weekly because of him spying on my wife
@MarkHenderson consider having doors on your hut.
22:40
@Wesley pull yourself up by your bootstraps, son!
in the US, I work my tooshie off, but can't quite hold a job...
@MarkHenderson Nobody will pay me what I'm worth either.
@FalconMomot Uhh... okay?
Is she crazy?
Are you trying to get rid of her?
<_<
@ewwhite I have to get a full time job so I can be more successful at moonlighting on the side.
she is actually crazy
@FalconMomot >_<
22:44
@Wesley I'm shooting for $500k this year...
@ewwhite I'm shooting for... money this year.
@Wesley This will be a case of leveraging your resources... and hopefully smoking one or two of these interviews.
man, you could get a team of 5 of me for @ewwhite.
@FalconMomot and all of you would be better than me...
wonders how to leverage this
22:46
@FalconMomot Be smart, get experience, help people... market yourself.
trying!
as I told Wesley, people everywhere have IT problems...
at the sandwich shop, at the startup incubator, on the produce market...
I was planning to walk around one the of startup incubators in Chicago and offer infrastructure services to all of the devs there.
I'm looking at a couple local markets that are underserved right now
@ewwhite So when you say "leverage" and "value"... all along you've been talking about blowjobs haven't you.
@Wesley no, but just know that the playing field isn't level.
and that charlatans like me exist...
22:51
@ewwhite It's who you know, not what you know.
Nobody likes me and I'm an idiot.
@Wesley Well don't tell people that
Let them find out on their own after they've paid you $5,000
@MarkHenderson I interview well though, which is weird. I clean up nice. I'm affable.
Then people are all "We'd like you to do all the things and take all the blame! We'll pay you $40,000."
"Oh, and you'll need to set up the CEO's home theater system every other weekend after his wild orgies ruin the equipment."
@Wesley I think that some people think that they're doing you a favour by offering you a job
@MarkHenderson Well I feel like a schmuck because my friends on facebook are teachers and newspaper workers and short haul truck drivers, so they're all excited when they get overtime that pushes them into the 32k a year category.
And here I am bitching about my first world problems. I just don't talk about money and pay with my friends because they don't see it form my perspective.
I have only a small handful of IRL IT friends.
Two or three.
BRB, making tea. Who wants some!
@Wesley I make less than almost everyone I know in IT.
23:01
kinda cool
I HATE SharePoint
still and again
I think we could use a canonical question about what to do if your VPN RFC1918 subnet conflicts with the RFC1918 subnet someone is connecting to your VPN from.
@FalconMomot You make more than most IT people I know.
@FalconMomot You laugh and then run away
actually, this one might work:
1
A: Connecting to a remote server through OpenVPN when local network subnet conflicts with remote network's subnet

ErikEIt is possible to solve this using nat, it's just not very elegant. So under the assumption you couldn't solve this by having internal nets which have so uncommon network id's as to never actually come into conflict, here's the principle: As both the local and remote subnet have identical netwo...

As an aside: That's why every network I design uses a part of the RFC1918 that is highly unlikely to be used elsewhere
Like 192.168.161 or 10.2.24
23:13
@MarkHenderson 127.0.0!
@MarkHenderson I've seen those all over the place...
@MichaelHampton Well I've never had a conflict so far
have your gateway set to 127.0.0.1
172.16/12
I've got two IPSec tunnels to two different 192.168.1.0/24 networks (I just sliced off the portion that I needed access to, thankfully they didn't overlap)
23:14
@MarkHenderson the extension of this in IPv6 is to randomly assign the arbitrary portion of the local address, and someone even made a voluntary registry of them
anyway, I'm going to canonize that question
Don't know if you guys have seen this yet - probably have, I'm slow off the mark
anyone ever mess with Formotus?
man I hate this obscure shit we use
23:32
@mark mentioned in Root Access earlier - but I dont think in this room
hmmm - can you reference posts from other rooms? I wonder if the IDs are unique across rooms?
@Fitzroy You can
Just paste the permalink
.
was curious if you could use the colon syntax accross rooms, but you cannot.
I wish vbscript had 'On Error GoTo'...
in The DMZ, 11 hours ago, by AviD
btw @Iszi re "how big is your mom StackOverflow" - see this blog post: http://nickcraver.com/blog/2013/11/22/what-it-takes-to-run-stack-overflow/
Paste it on its own like that ^^
@Fitzroy Nah because then everyone would write "on error resume next"
Error handling be damned!
Oh god, won't September ever end?
@mark well yeah but you need to write 'on error resume next' to move control to the next statement. Thats just how VB6/VBA/vbscript syntax works.
whats bad is when sysadmins (in vbscript) just write 'on error resume next' on line 1 and do no inline error handling what-so-ever
23:45
Huh? I'm a sysadmin and I've never touched vbscript. Nor would I ever expect to.
sysadmin of windows systems
@Fitzroy it's cause sysadmins are like honey badgers
@Fitzroy PowerShell. Problem solved.
@MichaelHampton vbscript is dead anyway
@michael yeah -I'm an advocate of PS but even that has its shortcomings when it comes to error handling. But I have a library of vbscript functions which I dont plan to throw away just yet.
23:47
@MattBear Maybe if you still have 2003 systems to manage...but in that case you can still use PS 2.0 or something
everything new i write i pretty much use powershell
I really dislike that powershell doesnt have an equiv. of Option Explicit. Such a great scripting tool, why has something so basic been left out?
@michael - not the same thing
consider this:
$MyVar = "Foo"
$MyVaz = "Bar"
write-host $MyVar
Foo
in other words, it doesnt protect against variable name mistyping because it doesnt enforce variable declaration
There is no such thing in PowerShell. And many other scripting languages.
just goes ahead and creates a new variable...
23:53
The varaible is implicitly declared when first assigned a value.
exactly - but good old 'option explicit' does what is says on the tin, you have to be explicit, not implicit.
I wish we had that in PS
What's the point? It's useful in strongly typed languages, but in weakly typed languages it's utterly pointless.
I dont think it's 'pointless'.
@Fitzroy Set-StrictMode -Version Latest
@RyanRies That also doesnt enforce explicit declaration of variables
23:57
Dim doesn't get you anything in VBScript because it's weakly typed. It's useful in Visual Basic because it's strongly typed and you have to specify the type.
@Fitzroy how does explicit declaration help you against name mistyping?
@MathiasR.Jessen because as the name implies, you have to Dim your vars
your fingers are equally fat and clumsy during declaration and initialization
From the help: Prohibits references to uninitialized variables (including uninitialized variables in strings).
@RyanRies varibles are initialized as soon as they are assigned a value, implicitly.
in PS that is.
23:59
And setting PS to strict gets you pretty much the same end effect.
so again ,doesnt help with making var declrartion mandatory.
