@Iain I use ridewithgps for route planning. I don't have a GPS that alerts ahead of turns, so not sure about that. You can add custom cuesheet entries, and might be possible to alert about those...
(If i'm worried about turns, I set my GPS to show the zoomed in route track, so that I can glance down and see if I'm taking a turn)
@Iain I totally get it, but I definitely didn't want to spend the extra for that stuff when I was buying my garmin... Heart rate, in particular, would've been awesome when I was really training hard, with intervals and all that stuff...
@freiheit I've also been asked to join a friend doing a one day Coast to Coast route which will be 165 miles/10K ft climbing some time late spring / early summer next year

It is possible to solve this using nat, it's just not very elegant.
