This chat room is the stack exchange equivalent of 4chan
The Comms Room. The most inappropriate place on the Internet. Besides /b/.
3
it's pretty tame compared to /b/... but we're also smarter than them
or, well, better educated and better paid.
Anyone else take vitamins daily here?
@Basil and more attractive
And just a shade less autistic.
@cole I take vitamin D when I am tired, especially in the winter.
@Cole I used to...but they're expensive and didn't really seem to do anything.
13:03
@NathanC Most do nothing in the long term, scientifically speaking. Vitamin D noticeably increases energy levels for people who don't see much sun.
Dan
Dan
@cole No, I'm not convinced they help
I take Vitamin C, Omega-3-6-9, Multivitamin, B12 and Biotin - I've had pretty good results
too bulky for me
Dan
Dan
@cole My body is so perfectly in tune that I don't need such things
13:07
pfft
Ah wow
Coworker is saying they're buying a new car instead of just putting tires on their 2005 Maxima
>.>
Not a bad price: newegg.com/Product/…-EMC-101713-Index--DesktopGraphicsVideoCards-_-14130910-L0B
Dan
Dan
I had to Google it, but if I owned the ugliest car in the world I'd do the same
Did they want a new car anyway and just needed an excuse or do they believe satan lives in their tyre walls and they dare not let him out?
@cole i take D in winter
4
@JennyD I'm going to try that
Go-go out of context star!
13:16
This plus and SSD should be good: newegg.com/Product/…-EMC-101713-Index--LaptopsNotebooks-_-34231271-L0C
Dan
Dan
I've just had an SSD and some more RAM for the MIL's laptop delivered
This felt like a lot of SSD for the money, and she doesn't need much storage:

http://www.ebuyer.com/546791-ocz-64gb-vertex-3-low-profile-7mm-sata-iii-ssd-up-to-vtx3lp-25sat3-60g-rf

Sadly her laptop is a few years out of data so only SATA 2. Still, gotta be better than a 5400 drive
@Dan an 05 Maxima is the ugliest car in the world? I think you've missed a few choices out there...
@NathanC I don't even understand why it was interesting enough to star out of context...
Dan
Dan
@TheCleaner "One of the" then!
I definitely agree the front end rounded off like it is looks hideous...
Dan
Dan
13:19
And not so much ugly as so boring it's painful
The 2012 looks much better...heck the iteration before the 05's looks better.
so, 2012 R2 and Win 8.1 out
@pauska When is it safe to begin deploying on them?
I still think the Pontiac Aztek is about the most hideous in the last 20 years. Albeit the brand new Lambo looks like it was designed by pre-teen boy racers.
Dan
Dan
13:24
@ewwhite Now pretty much - 2012 is getting to maturity and these aren't big steps up
@TheCleaner Yeah, that's a bit.....much
It's basically 2012 SP1..
@Dan interesting
Dan
Dan
@pauska Yeah, that's how I read it
Anything interesting in 2012 R2?
@tombull89 mostly under the hood stuff
13:29
Woooo R2 release day
Glad 8.1 is a quick download...grrr....
So if I wanted to play with Windows 8.x, where do I get a copy?
(in a VM)
@ewwhite Internet.
So my gf told me that she got a 0 on a reflection paper because the professor thought she cheated on it. How the fuck do you cheat on a reflection paper?
O_o
One of the reasons I'm thankful I'm not in college anymore
13:32
Ugh... I'm trying to work on a Linux server that a Windows guy configured...
[root@dev1 ~]# ./CP021566.scexe
./CP021566.scexe: ./flash_ilo2: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory
I think I'm missing something
@tombull89 thank you
do people BUY individual licenses ever, or is that weird?
@NathanC hah...maybe she turned in someone else's reflection? He's reading it and the first paragraph contains "growing up as a poor boy in Nicaragua..."
@ewwhite seems like a 32 vs 64-bit issue. Are you on a 64-bit system with no 32-bit compatibility libraries installed?
yum install glibc.i686
basically
@ewwhite for Windows? Sure...all the time.
@MikeyB on a T1 line :(
so I wait.
13:34
@TheCleaner It was because "it didn't flow right"...idk. I haven't read it myself. Still though...I don't even see how it's possible to cheat on something that has no right or wrong answer.
DO any of you even have to deal with slow internet connections anymore, or are we all at the point where there's no excuse for that?
Some of you may know I'm waiting on delivery of a bunch of kit that will fill up a new data centre - just had confirmation that the delivery window will be 4 days during which 91 separate deliveries will be made - gulp
@ewwhite We have a 8mbit here...backup is a pair of T1s. So...when it's on backup it's slowwww
@Chopper3 May I visit?
@Chopper3 Holy deliveries
13:35
@ewwhite I do, at home.
@NathanC I'm getting 30kb/sec
@Chopper3 welp
@ewwhite I'm sure I'll be able to show deliveries
@NathanC I'd definitely contest a zero. I'd ask to rewrite it and hope to get at least a "C". That's crap to simply give a zero with no real proof of cheating.
@NathanC they are removing the packaging thank goodness - that would be quite a problem if they didn't
13:36
@Chopper3 Big build.
@Chopper3 Yowzas. OTOH, filling up a new datacenter? FUN!
@ewwhite it's all being built by 'factory express' so they just wheel it all in ready to be connected
@TheCleaner Meh, she says she's still getting a good grade in the class. A reflection paper is done weekly so the weight is really low. But now the professor's on her ass about all of her coursework.
@Chopper3 Enough boxes to last a lifetime!
It'll be 91 deliveries and then waiting 48 hours for the dang licensing emails to show up.
...if they didn't. lol
13:38
hey storage peeps, is there a way in windows server to throttle disk IO? we have a developer that needs to be fired, but until he is, I need to stop his badly written queries from generating 15000 IOPS on a single device.
for hours
So, my online python class started. Should be fun...especially since I haven't taken a class in a couple years and I'm a seasoned procrastinator...
@Chopper3 how many cabs is "a data center?"
@tombull89 this is 1171 racks in total but not all are full of stuff
@Chopper3 daymn
13:41
@tombull89 all on one floor too - part of the deal really, not allowed to co-locate with other platforms
@Chopper3 BT? or can't say?
@Chopper3 And suddenly, domino effect when someone accidentally bumps into a rack
=p
@tombull89 yeah BT, each row is 2 x 19 rack tiles with a 4 rack gap between - pretty standard really - we're going with just two KVM 'gurneys' for the whole place
sounds like there's still time to go grab RC cars and have some fun in an open datacenter.
4 racks gap? Seems high.
13:44
Wow @DougLuxem - your pop-in reminds me of the days of Enemy Territory man. Hope all is well.
haha, hey @TheCleaner. Things are going well...how have you been?
@tombull89 sorry, wasn't clear - between the two sub-lines of 19 each - so each line is 19 tiles then 4 empty then 19, two tiles between each row
Very well man. No real time for PC gaming in quite a few years now with family, etc. How bout you? Ever go over to nasioc anymore? I haven't been there in about a year now.
@Chopper3 ah that makes more sense.
just space to cut through
the storage is in each corner, the networking all in the middle - if that makes sense
13:47
@TheCleaner Played a little BF3 and Diablo this year, but not much. Pop in to nasioc every once in a while but don't really post there. All of my Subarus are long gone these days...rockin' a minivan now. :)
:) and yet the minivan probably gets to 40 faster.
@ewwhite I was surprised W8.1 is avalible in 32 and 64 bit.
It's about 2x the HP of my old RS, so yea :D
@tombull89 just started downloading 8.1 on my gaming rig
@Chopper3 I'll give it a go in a VM for a few days and then decide if I want to move from Win 7.
13:51
@tombull89 I built my new rig with 8.0 knowing that although I didn't want that I did want 8.1 and the upgrade would be easier than from 7
8.1 upgrade: m$ wanted me to create a microsoft account after installation. had to disconnect the network cable to continue using my local account. fun.
@Gryphius ha - good work
@Chopper3 playing Battlefield 3 last night on a UK (Essex) Rush server, ended up in the same team/squad as a guy that lives in Bath (next city over from Bristol).
Now I officially have nothing to do.
@tombull89 cool, was just playing bf3 for a second before actually, first time for a while
13:56
@cole sounds like a situation for internet pornography

Q: What's the point of changing the hostname on my server?

loneboatI know that changing my DNS records to point to my IP address is how I get my server accessible, so that a request for myDomain.com points to my IP address. With that said, why does a machine need to have a hostname? Why does it care what it's hostname is if the DNS system will route requests t...

Asking questions on SO is hilarious... like 10 comments and 10 answers within 10 seconds of posting my question
@RyanRies Skeet himself even dropped a comment.
Plus the SO'ers seem to edit their answers feverishly. I think I've seen each answer get at least two edits.
Yeah, 12 answers to my question in literally like 3 or 4 minutes... insane
14:29
O_o
Even more funny, the first response, a comment, contained the answer. Wow SO is on top of things.
I feel sheepish for asking it now
Like, 'duh'
yea...8.1 "preparing to restart"...be back in a bit (hopefully)
14:47
I can't believe the nightmare is almost over.
14:59
I'm sooooo doing this...
I'd have to find a spindle case first.... Who uses blank CD/DVD/etc media anymore?
Okay :(
then my fallback tip is...
That one's worth a genius point
Actually we probably do have some CDs around here... If people want their tax return in PDF on a CD it's apparently an option still. We charge $29 for it.
@ChrisS lordy
I've repeatedly warned people that CDs only last ~10 years. Pulled out some ancient CDs and DVDs I burnt back in the day a month ago - took 9 CDs before I found one that worked anymore.
15:05
@ewwhite I think we should jack that up to $49 or something... There's no good reason anyone should be using a CD anymore.
Some of these tips are nuts.
@ewwhite Another way: in larger hotels that have a lost and found, go to the reception desk and say that you lost your charger. Chances are they'll have one.
I got one for the in-laws, then the wife wanted one, now my parents want one.... Too many pads, phones, and pods to charge...
@NathanC Don't forget to leave it in the room when you're done so someone else can do that...
Anybody have recommendations on what these should be set to in 8.1? I set them based on my own personal pref...but still
15:09
@TheCleaner Off, off, off, off, off, off
@TheCleaner "Share my info with the NSA: Voluntarily or Involuntarily"
@NathanC Good point
Tin foil hat mode
@ChrisS not bad...we put in 2 of these over the summer in the kitchen.
I usually have my laptop with me everywhere so I always have a charging source. To save battery I leave the laptop in sleep mode...the USB ports are still powered so the charger works.
15:10
One of the helpdesk guys just IMed me on Sametime
"omg just heard you're leaving us. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
@TheCleaner Interesting - What's the power draw when nothing is plugged in?
"you're the only one who doesn't suck!"
@ChrisS my mom.
@NathanC Many newer laptops have a "charging port" that's powered when the laptop is off, but has a powerbrick connected. Usually has a lightening bolt or plus sign next to the usb logo.
@TheCleaner: these days those need to be standard. I've been getting powered hubs for the same reason
15:12
Is this better than batteryhorsestaple?
@ewwhite until they see you put it in...
@ChrisS supposedly none...but I don't know for certain. We got it strictly because we had a few tablets that needed charging and didn't like messing with the adapters.
@ChrisS My 5 year old laptop doesn't have one, but it still works
fullscreenmario.com who needs to work anyway?
@NathanC The level generator is The Devil. So many lost hours.
@TheCleaner I'm sure it loses some, I've only seen one model where there's a switch in the USB port to disconnect main power when nothing is plugged in. You'd be surprised how much power those wall-warts "lose" with nothing plugged in.
15:16
HÖЯ5Σ 84ʇʇЯ⅄ ....
=]
Too bad it's a bit lagy in FF
@NathanC thanks for fucking my work day :(
@ChrisS yeah, I'm sure you're correct. The question on Amazon is answered by various non-electricians.
"Why I don't think on-premises Exchange is dead"
@Tanner Muhahaha. Ha.
So should I bother with installing 8.1 on my non-touch Lenovo X200?
15:25
@jscott - sure I guess. So far I don't notice anything crazy better, but I like the start button being back and the "search everywhere" feature is nice. But I've only been running it for about 10 minutes so far.
I'd be using Windows 8 if it stopped failing -_-
I have a feeling I'll need to do a clean reinstall of 7 then install 8 over it
Since I only have an upgrade license and not a full one
Mine came with 8, and has been very stable. My biggest piss point isn't with 8, but with Lenovo and their USB 3 dock...the thing is BS. It should have built in charging for the laptop (among many other design flaws)
@TheCleaner His argument assumes Microsoft is smart enough to realize what's outlined in the article. I'm reminded of two quotes "A person is smart. People are dumb", and "Teamwork: None of us is as stupid as all of us"
I'm not crazy about Win8.1 - I got a "start" button, whoopie. But some of the Start Screen search functional regressed.
@ewwhite No. It just increases the entropy pool from which you can select your xkcd-Compliant passwords.
also being sick really sucks
"Apparently there’s quite a few people who think that Microsoft us busily killing off all its on-premises editions of server applications in the rush to embrace my butt."
teehee
15:32
@NathanC I'd be using Windows if every time I went near it wasn't an exercise in pain, frustration, and wonderful examples of the operating system getting in the user's way.
@ChrisS exactly. But he's safe for a few iterations. But I think one of the comments may be right (no ver. 16). I think it's more likely though that you'd see "hybrid only" versions before you'll see them completely remove on-prem choices.
Mind-blown...
@ewwhite Doesn't work.
@ChrisS tried it?
@ewwhite This would just make the entire pizza chewy
@ewwhite the "water" in the microwave trick I always thought was to prevent stuff from getting dry...not the other way around.
If you don't want chewy pizza (a) use a goddamn toaster oven like a normal person, or (b) invest in a convection microwave (which will still not be as good as a toaster oven)
@voretaq7 It really doesn't make any difference unless you left it in there long enough to evaporate a lot of the water.
...or toss it into the actual oven
If you're like me and own neither a toaster oven nor a microwave you just put your pizza in the oven
15:34
I just eat it cold...
@voretaq7 I like cold pizza, if it's thin crust. I also like cold chicken and (gasp) cold steak.
@ewwhite @TheCleaner What are you two, fucking college students?
Or just leave the box on top of the fridge.. Stay warm until you're ready to finish the pizza
do you eat cold chinese food too?
@ChrisS my refrigerator doesn't produce that much heat...
@voretaq7 pizza in a cast iron pan on the range works well, too
15:35
@voretaq7 Yes, I do college students :)
lol I just replied to you @voretaq7 by editing my post...sorry
Oh, @freiheit, was it you that suggested the Bell's Two Hearted Ale? If so, thank you, it was great. A local grocery chain just got a bunch of Bell's stuff and I'll have to try all of them.
ugh I really want pizza now
@jscott I've only managed to get Two Hearted a few times. Not distributed in California. It is pretty good. Look for Bell's Hopslam in January/February/March.
15:37
I'm a very right wing pizza person though. Simple pepperoni and sausage every time. No weird "taco pizza" or other for me.
Maybe I'm just weird and just now discovering the interwebs... but life support?
@TheCleaner You want a salad pizza. because wilted lettuce is what EVERYONE needs
@ewwhite I'm more concerned about the fact that "Mouse" has 2 wires.
what sort of mouse has 2 wires?
@voretaq7 a trackball?
@ewwhite Use in tandem with:
No, not even
15:39
@ewwhite my trackballs never had 2 wires
@voretaq7 the kind of mouse you use in a hot tub
and those keyboards with a mouse built in only have one...
@ewwhite: and thats a pretty thin cord for a hot tub
@JourneymanGeek USB hot tub
@jscott that one is genius. I actually bought one of these and now realize there was no need:
@TheCleaner I use those... came in my Birchbox :)
I can't imagine that one working without getting pissed.
@TheCleaner And the hot kernels will handily melt right through your garbage bag. :)
15:45
@jscott yeah...apparently people can't be bothered with seeing them in the bottom of the bowl and just dumping them at the end?
I'll not mention the savages that actually eat the unpopped kernels.
WHAT
Who the hell does that @jscott
>_>
thats the best part
FREAK
Or peanuts, whole with shell...
15:46
@cole @mdmarra does.
@jscott the.fuck.
@ewwhite well, I knew @mdmarra was a freak.
@jscott: oh, I don't eat the shells.
@cole I think I am the only one in my office that doesn't eat the shells. At first I thought they were all putting me on.
@jscott what the fuck.
15:47
... thats just odd.
I um... I eat sunflower seed shells.
Dunno about the peanut shells, that seems gnarly. But mmmm.... whole sunflower seeds.
actually
they have these salted in the shell groundnuts in these part
(and garlic flavoured in the shell groundnuts)
you could PROBABLY eat the shells on those.
not that you would want to
@JourneymanGeek Why do we have the same avatar?
o0
yeah, the resemblance is startling
If this works, I'm telling my wife to make me a whole batch this weekend:
15:57
Okay, so I got this email...
Hi ewwhite... I wanted to follow up on our call and see if we could setup a little time one morning next week for you to have a remote pairing session with our engineer in London
For those of you with jobs... What's a "remote pairing session"?
"Screen sharing"?
@voretaq7 - you're starred comment makes it look as if you are calling me two people in one.
@NathanC Screen sharing doesn't sound too pleasant.
Other thoughts?
@ewwhite It may mean they're into the pair programming concept there...
@freiheit Hmmm... (is it a programming job?)
16:01
@ewwhite It could just mean screen/tmux so you're both seeing the same thing and showing how you do some stuff while talking about it.
I've never done that... well, once... a Facebook interview.
and I had to write pseudocode in realtime
gulp
@ewwhite Like, pseudocode on a computer? That's just silly. pseudocode is for whiteboards.
@freiheit yeah, on a shared text editor with a Facebook engineer.
rereads job description...
Skills & Requirements

You:
believe infrastructure as code and automation are awesome (we use Chef)
worship highly availability and performant infrastructure
are Master of the Linux Universe
know what’s what with AWS
have experienced the challenges of running web applications scale
can’t live without source code management (we use GitHub)
feel happiest work closely with devs
know a bit about Ruby
perhaps (but not essentially) know your way around Postgres
need to understand technology problems as part of a broader product vision
@TheCleaner aren't you?
@ewwhite it's the company dating system
@ewwhite DevOps
16:06
@voretaq7 Ewww... no long-distance for me.
you RDP in to a server, it connects you with another engineer. You two mate to produce the next generation of DevOps.
Aren't you guys concerned seeing so many places who use the Chef+Ubuntu combination?
(add AWS to that)
I'm concerned any time I see Ubuntu.
People should learn from my mistakes and misery.
@voretaq7 It scares me a bit... but it seems like Ubuntu is perfect for people using cloudy infra.
but I keep thinking that Red Hat pays people to test shit... and there's some value in that.
@ewwhite shrug... My complaints with Ubuntu were all desktop related. Seems like it could be ok for server stuff. Not as reliable as RHEL, but throw enough HA clustering stuff at and good dev->test->stage->prod process and you'll hide the problems... Chef seems fine... AWS seems ok for a cloud butt thing.
16:11
@freiheit I think I manage 20 or so Ubuntu boxes...I don't do anything to them
but I found stuff like VMware tools to be a hassle...
and some version issues.
it doesn't feel like Linux to me
@ewwhite At the same time, a lot of these devops website startups won't really use RHEL/CentOS, because the tools they care about are too old.
@freiheit My complaints with Ubuntu are all engineering related - they're just exposed by the more complicated Desktop environment.
@freiheit And that's what gets me... I wouldn't want a complicated stack running without the stability of the tools RHEL provides...
but if those tools are too old to be addressed by repoforge and epel...
@ewwhite Stability? THIS. IS. DEVOPS!
what does that mean? That the devs are too bleeding edge, or that RHEL is too slow?
16:13
@ewwhite dev->test->stage->prod. Testing baked into the release cycle. Constant updates...
@ewwhite Don't forget the (very new) RHEL Software Collections.
@freiheit oh, point me to it
@ewwhite Note that I'm saying you can fix it with good testing, but personally I like having the basic toolset well tested and stable so I don't have to worry about it.
I do not eat unpopped kernels
@ewwhite developerblog.redhat.com/tag/software-collections -- Really it's just extra channels in RHN.
@MDMarra You're right. That's more of a @wesley thing.
16:15
@freiheit you know a "web2.0/devops" shop that does this?
@freiheit That blog didn't say much.
@voretaq7 It's what they like to talk about. Do they really do it? I dunno. I've interviewed at places that talked that kind of talk, but it was clearly more of a goal than a reality.
@freiheit It's usually, application on fire... fix now!!
@freiheit Even SE doesn't do that.
and they're about the "doing it rightest" of the devopsy shops I interact with regularly
(I mean I GUESS mSO is a staging environment, but it's kinda also production...)
@freiheit Thanks for this. Now that I'm back in CentOS-land, it'll be interesting to see what trickles down.
16:19
@voretaq7 Well, and a really thorough dev->test->stage->prod thing is to have stage and prod be full on clones, do a freeze, data clone from prod to stage, software update on stage and swap stage with prod.
So Sony have a rather...interesting...marketing stunt in Bristol at the moment.
@freiheit oh, you mean what I do here?
Developers write code. It gets deployed to the dev environment with data cloned from production (usually whatever I did a restore test on last) and put through integration ("hit it until it works"). When it works it gets deployed to QA and run against known test data (for regression testing and verification), then it can be pushed to prod.

@tombull89 um
why does he has to be upside down?
so the camera is deeper underwater
@JourneymanGeek unless they're stating a maximum service depth, why does that matter? (And if they are the camera should be ~1M above that depth)
It's rated for IP57, which is waterproof up to depths of one meter for 30 minutes.
16:26
@voretaq7: it looks more impressive ;p
@voretaq7 Because they'd need to make the tank taller for the guy not to have to crouch to have the camera nicely visible while in a plausible "I'm taking a photo" pose. It's cheaper to pay him $1 more an hour for headstands than to buy a bigger tank. And it better matches the other marketing material with the underwater headstand, which draws your eye precisely because the guy is upside down.
@freiheit ok.... but I don't care about the guy, I care about the service limits of the phone
@tombull89 ...so every 30 minutes they take him out of the tank? :)
@voretaq7 That's because you're a sysadmin, not a normal person.
@freiheit pretty much every photographer I know only cares about the specs and limits on their gear too...
but they're also hardly "normal"
@voretaq7 I assume so, I didn't hang around long enough to see her come up. Took the photo to be entered into the prize draw and GTFO.
16:31
(you're not supposed to "care about the guy", you're supposed to have your attention drawn by the guy so that you are interested enough to find out more)
It's a moot point because I already have the phone they're advertising :P
@freiheit "It's another cheap stunt phone ad"
:P
