@Magellan Also true, but still not something that would skew us in to running linux servers..
@pauska I suppose. I still don't understand why so many Windows admins I've met are so dead-set against heterogenous environments.
Not to say that you are, per se. But I've definitely noticed it.
@Magellan Oh jesus christ.. :P
@pauska Oh yes, I'd love a "standardized" environment for those reasons.
But... developers given a RHEL desktop would stage an armed revolt. And the legacy stuff...
@Magellan For me the reasons would be the same I said before..
@MichaelHampton oooh, just give them that distro with a million optimizer flags.. emerge something
developers looooooove to build stuff :)
@pauska Gentoo? Oh god no. Not even putting that in production.
17:04
@Magellan Also, factor in that some (or alot) of windows shops have gone the route of using datacenter licensing on most of their servers
heh, I had an interview candidate who had only gentoo in production and loved the gentooisms
needless to say, he didn't quite make it
it means that stuff like system center, windows server etc is the same initial cost, it just increases with the number of sockets
so when I install a MySQL server on Windows I have support for it, I have monitoring tools (SCOM), I have deployment and compliance (SCCM) and the list goes on
it doesn't cost us a penny more
I'd say having developers with Gentoo would be totally fine. I only have two requirements: 1) You must keep your own machine up and running and not hacked. 2) Your software must run on RHEL without me having to do anything to it.
@pauska I dunno, mate. Frankly, I enjoy talking with you guys about Windows. Helps me keep a balanced perspective compared to all the ijits I've interviewed or interviewed with who have gut-level emotional reactions to anything Linux.
@Magellan Seattle WOULD be all MSFT wouldn't it
17:06
Yeah. Nearly as many Linux jobs in Portland as here, in a city half the size.
quite a few startups are also Windows-only. Allrecipes.com being one of the bigger ones.
@pauska Yeah, if you're already a 100% Windows shop then even throwing in a single Linux box is a management headache. So I get why it's done. I still don't like it. :)
@Magellan Same deal for me when it comes to Linux.. I've used FreeBSD for ages, and Linux for hobby stuff.. it's not that I don't like it, I just gotta think very "corporate" when making these kind of decisions at work
And sometimes, Windows is just not right the fit
Like the two virtual FreeBSD routers I have running OSPF, since Microsoft ripped that out of RRaS
or the single Linux box running squid/dansguardian.. way too costly to purchase a proxy for 1600 students without academic rebate
So we're not 100% windows. But close :)
@pauska Ah. I was going to suggest OpenDNS. But that's also rather expensive for 1600 users.
@Magellan And DNS rbl's are really static.. We want to block flash streaming, but not every single site with a flash file on it
@pauska Yeah, I ran into that at job[-3]. Flash was required for the state-mandated training for the staff, but we wanted Youtube and Netflix blocked. Needed to move over to filtered DNS.
Sheesh. Momentarily forgot that I don't run that network anymore.
I hear so many complaints about job[-3] from The Lady that I forget that I don't work there anymore. =)

Q: Cant' access my ip camera over internet

Lucas MalorI have an EasyN F3 (F3-M166) ip camera. It works fine on local ip address, but I can't access it over internet. This is what I have done step by step: I configured the local ip (camera_ip) and port (camera_port) of the camera, using the software from the vendor's website: http://p2.ipcam.hk/ I ...

@MDMarra at least he's got 5.6 days to be ridiculed here on SF. :D
Make it rain VtC on that thing.
@MikeyB In fairness I'm impressed that I submitted a false positive report and MXLogic has already replied with a brief apology, an update to their filters, and recommendations to retry/etc...

Q: How to quickly and easily set up and maintain VPN's ? (Have Juniper SSG-140)

samsmithGreetings! We have an SSG-140 by Juniper (similar to a netscreen 25, just a newer version of ScreenOS and more physical ports). I find setting up new VPN profiles to be a PITA. I have to follow a bunch of steps, test it out, etc etc. I find running an SSH server is easier as far as new user se...

I'm too lazy! Halp meeeee!
Roses are red. Violets are red. Lilacs are red. We've run out of cyan toner.

17:18
@Magellan I would but helping the Comms guy with building a VM for Solarwinds for him
@DennisKaarsemaker haha!
$700 in parts so far for my damn car... and I still have at least another $400 to go
fml'
can I just build a Virtual Car in some cloud host and not have to worry about hardware anymore?
@MattBear Transportation as a Service (TaaS) is available in train, taxi and bus configurations.
butt car
@jscott don't forget tram, metro, ferry, airplane and rickshaw
@DennisKaarsemaker Custom configurations may not be available in all service areas. Please consult with your Taas provider for more details about configuration available in your area.
17:26
@Magellan The dang thing has VPN wizards, and Juniper's KB site has a walkthrough with pictures and flowcharts! wow.
@cole Soylent Jelly
@cole oooh fancy json css html5 ajax and other fancy words I don't know -site!
@TheCleaner I hope I never end up working with that person. I truly do.
@MattBear I've put over $3000 into my car in the past 6 months. The car's not even worth that much lol
Including an engine :(
17:31
You must really love your car if you replace the engine.. I've never seen it be profitable, unless it's a new car (guarantee) or a mechanic doing it for his own profit..
@NathanC, what are you driving that is needing such TLC?
@DanBig 03 cavalier
@NathanC You're crazy.
@pauska More like...I was stuck. I couldn't trade it in before the engine went because I owe too much, so it was either fix it or no vehicle and a car loan
@NathanC, Ah, the sounds of a >1 yr old american car.
17:33
I've owned two Cavaliers of that generation. they weren't worth the cash to haul them away.
a 2003 model car needing a engine replacement.. holy cow
did you service it properly?
@pauska General Motors was making some truly crappy engines and drivetrains during that era.
@pauska Previous owner probably not...it was burning oil internally and needed a full head gasket job.
I'm dressing up as Meta.SO for Halloween this year. Every time a polite stranger asks me "what's your costume?" I'll reply with a random sarcastic comment insinuating he should have already known what I was dressed as. Then I'll have at least 6 buddies standing there to give me high fives while the stranger looks on.
21
17:34
@pauska Not to mention those were cars purchased by people with no mechanical skill and no "upbringing". Commonly piloted by trailer trash.
I've heard the ecotec engines (which is what's in my car) could take a beating...so the previous owner must've really not taken care of it
I changed the oil every 3k on the dot basically, did all other maintenance too. Didn't help I was putting ~2k miles a month before I moved closer to work heh.
@jscott TaaS does not offer service in rural areas
@NathanC image of the day :)
@NathanC I bought the damn car for $1000 to begin with lol
its turning into a money pit...
@MattBear Yeah...cars like that typically do.
@DennisKaarsemaker It's my facebook cover photo lol
17:41
@NathanC its a 1987 mercedes 190d
I've had it for 3 years, gets 35 mpg
Ah...a car that old will definitely need lots of parts to keep it spinning heh
havent had to do much to it up till now, brakes, shocks
I've been working on restoring it bit by bit
I think the best money I threw at a car was a 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo. I paid 2k for the thing in 2005 with 196k miles. I junked it via the C.A.R.S. program and got a 4k trade-in in 2009.
I had a 95 Maxima I bought for $2k that has 290k miles on it. Drove it for 4 years and only changed oil, tires, brake pads. Traded it in with 340k on the odometer with the engine smoking in the dealer parking lot and got $500 trade for it. That Nissan VQ engine is bulletproof.
@ScottPack headbonk
17:43
i think the timing belt and harmonic balancer were the only real repairs I did to it.
@Wesley Hey sweetnes
@ScottPack ha...nice!
U-Joint on the driveshaft went out...
$405 for the part
on an american made car, would of been $30
spider join seized on a axle half-shaft
$207
so not too bad on that one
plus another $50 for the sockets and shit
@MattBear The real question is: Did you do your squats last night.
and now I need to replace a bunch of bushings to tighten up the handling, and fix the squeaks
@Wesley check my fitocracy
5 link suspension on all four wheels, 2 bushings per link, $3-$30 per bushing, plus ball joints for the steering
@MattBear Fucker.
17:48
44 bushings and ball joints total needing replacement
Sad Panda. I was not offered a choice of a MacBook or Lenovo. No MBP for me, going to be a Lenovo T430 with Win7, Lync and Kaspersky.
$$$$$$$$$ there
@MattBear That's a lot of badges in a little time. =P
@Magellan That's it. Hide in the bathroom overnight and burn the place down.
I've been driving Subarus for the last 10 years, I made a brief detour to a newer GTO figuring "Its constructed in Australia with a tried and true LS1 and T56, its gonna be awesome" It was still American suck.
@Wesley I just activated all quests lol
17:49
@DanBig Yeah. Subarus may be expensive to fix, but the major stuff doesn't frequently break. Their electrics aren't much better than F'ing Lucas, though.
I'm presuming that we allow all answers that "work" even if they are derp?

A: Additional mailboxes in Outlook 07 SP2

Ben Cullenset your LAN DNS IP to the Exchange Server, this solved it for me

@Wesley Yeah, I'm slightly grumpy about having to work on a Windows laptop as my daily driver. I haven't had to do that since 2009.
@MattBear I should do something like that, I haven't really looked at them
@Magellan, i have to say, my 01 RS was perfect, my 03 WRX that i traded for the GTO was also without issue, and now my 09 WRX is also humming along perfectly. All were fairly well modified. It also helps that I do all my own work.
@MattBear mercedes diesel engines are nearly impossible to kill..
17:51
@Wesley was like "hey, lots of free points cause I do that anyway!"
But im also religious about maintenance
@Magellan Still waiting for you to update LinkedIn so I know what you're actually doing... =P
@pauska I know :) thats why I have it
there are lots of 300E station wagions running around here with diesel engines.. those who haven't been eaten by rust
@DanBig I share an 02 Forester. Drove an 03 Legacy L for a few years before my Ex got it in the divorce.
17:51
last one went 700k+
@Wesley Ah, you're right.
@MattBear Nice potato camera.
till my brother totaled it when I let him borrow it
@MattBear Fucking brothers.
I nearly bought a 300E TDT
17:52
@Magellan, at this point, with the track record I've personally had with Subaru, i see no reason to switch when the time comes for a new car.
quite expensive to be a used old car, but rock solid and "4x4"
@DanBig We're a bit hesitant as I think the Tribeca is over-priced. I need to buy a 3-row SUV or Crossover this winter before the babies arrive.
If they had a 3-row vehicle that frequently listed used for under 15k, I'd be looking to buy post-haste.
I'm not much of a fan of the Subaru SUV/CUV offerings. If i were to start a family, i would still use my WRX hatch, and have the other half get a bigger vehicle for trips, etc.
For S&G here is the grocery getter. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5686564/…
I'm saving up for a Toyota Tacoma 4x4
Was looking at a Subaru Forrester but decided against it.
@DanBig Yeah, my problem is that I'll need at least 6 seats by sometime this winter. My 8 and 12 year old are with us on some of the weekends, and a pair of baby carseats take up an astonishing amount of seat real estate.
18:06
Man, 4 kids, that a lot. I'm looking forward to staying at zero, possibly one and buying a corvette in a few years.
@Wesley I'm very fond of the Forester. They're VERY peppy due to being quite light and I LOVE the 4speed auto gearbox. And I get better than 30mpg on the freeway, far better than the EPA estimates.
hey guys, and cats.
My Legacy had the same motor but weighed 100s of pounds more and was geared completely different. Was absolutely awful.
@DanBig Yeah, just one of the minor ways in which the little monsters change your life. =)
@DanilaLadner I was able to workaround the puppetDB problem with the IPA certs by storing them in a JKS. Not ideal, though.
later gents. Time to go get the scooter tires changed.
18:10
@Magellan It's murder to find a used 6 cylinder one.
Not a single one was in the Phoenix area when I was looking last year.
@Wesley Why do you need a 6? My 2L H4 is awesome.
@Magellan MOAH POWAH!!
I always go the speed limit, but I like to achieve that limit as fast as possible. =P
@Wesley Pfft. It doesn't get you that much in a Forester. They're boxey and quite spritely enough in the base engine arrangement.
If you want real acceleration, go buy yourself a motorcycle
But now I realize I want a bed for hauling and moving, and fishing, and etc. so I'm looking at a crew cab and shortbed.
Put a lift kit on it and some knobbies:
@Wesley The Tacomas are very nice. My friend has a base model with a 5sp stick and drives it everywhere.
18:13
sigh facepalm
@Magellan How else am I going to get across the desert game roads? =P
Whoa....... whoa.... whoa.... Wait just a second. Cats can't drive trucks.
...trucks?
How butch of you @Wesley
@AaronCopley My chauffeur does though.
"Jeeves, run over that dog for me."
18:16
Trucks are a bit too hillbilly for me
@Magellan Ohhh, now that would be neat. But, but... all my rods and tackle box and the ice chest full of catfish and bass...
Actually, fishing down here kinda blows. Everything is tiny.
I miss salmon and steelhead. =(
I caught a 30 inch salmon on the Siletz river. Thing felt like I snagged a refrigerator.
Actually, enough gear for several days of camping can be hauled quite easily on a DRZ400. You just have to acknowledge that you don't need to be glamping and that less can be more.
It was spawned out bad though, so was pretty limp. I could only imagine what a live one would feel like.
If you've done backpack camping, you already understand what you need to do.
18:18
@Magellan Haven't yet, but hope to soon. Got a lot of backpacker friends here that go up into the Superstitions.
@Wesley I love the Siletz River area. That whole country is so beautiful.
ok. now i REALLY gotta go. laterz.
@Magellan Wait, no, that was the Santiam River. Derp. Losing my mind.
Laterz.
And suddenly in the last 36 hours my mail filter is blocking tons of RFC malformed email messages.
"tons"
Maybe 10% out of 2,000 total messages
Seeing lifted trucks makes me want to search for banjos.

One of the many things I do at booking.com, is maintaining the infrastructure behind perl5.git.perl.org, the main git repository for Perl 5. The perl 5 committers moved to git a few years ago and we have been hosting this ever since. However, that repository not being on GitHub was causing some confusion with quite a few copies being pushed to GitHub anyway by individual contributors, and even

@DennisKaarsemaker Nifty! You can also configure a github repo to actually mirror your own which both is automatic AND acts as signpost to a user that this is NOT the main repo: github.com/netdirect
unfortunately perl.git can't be completely mirrored
github is running on the wrong version of git
perl.git was cobbled together from a perforce repo, and old non-vc changes. It's a masterpiece of gitcraft
but there are 2 commits that have slightly broken Author: lines
git pre-1.6 accepted those, and post 1.8 as well
but github is currently running on something in the middle and those commits, which are fortunately on a side branch, cannot be pushed

Is it just me, or does 'exploratory phone call' sound like a $3/minute number?
@DennisKaarsemaker Moving to jolly Londontowne eh?
@DennisKaarsemaker Not just you. That was my first thought. But I may have been primed.
@Wesley neh, but if anyone needs a sysadmin job in London I have a lead :)
@DennisKaarsemaker Sounds medical (and therefore more than $3/minute)...

Apparently Yammer is expanding their operations to europe and are expecting massive growth now that they're microsoft
@freiheit 8/10 would cavity search with again. Fingers cold though.
@DennisKaarsemaker and also sending random recruitment offers, not even bothering reading profiles
@dawud this one actually read my profile, or at least the skills section :)

@DennisKaarsemaker OH
@DennisKaarsemaker "Can scoop kitty litter without raising dust cloud. Excellent tummy rubs. Babytalks while clipping nails."

_"I was impressed with your profile because of your experience around coding and automation of highly scalable distributed systems"_
@dawud "I was impressed with your profile because computer cloud butt devops kanban"
more or less
Did I tell you I got a guy to put "buttscale" on his LinkedIn page?
LOL
I'm probably pissing off the people on the #devops hashtag =P
19:04
@Wesley YO MOMA IS BUTTSCALE!
To be fair, the guy also lists his official title on LinkedIn as a "Sparkly Code Princess"
so I guess these people just send a standard message buttscaled to everybody and wait to see what happens?
@dawud Basically it works the same as finding a date on the weekend. Mass text everyone in your contacts list that has a female name and see what happens.
"Sorry, mom, I think someone stole my phone. I totally don't think of you in that way."
@dawud And when all else fails, there's always NILE!
Tonight is a Scotch, Bee Gees and python night.

thanks :)
also, next unless /^CL.-./ should work for $_

fair enough. I tend to avoid implicit use of the $_ variable because I worry it will confuse my shell using colleagues, but I will do it when it makes sense
19:29
nope, that example doesn't work
implicit $_ is fun
it's fine, I think I'm going to stick with my next unless ($line =~ /^CL.-./); just for readability :)
especially if you use it 100 lines deep in a sub
@DennisKaarsemaker it's awesome- I love perl for a lot of reasons, but I have to say, even cooler than that is hashes.
holy crap, hashes have saved me so much time

it's so easy to do the wrong thing. And the language encourages you to do so
I'll take python over perl any day

hey, in perl when you're using a key of a hash as a value and don't have a final scalar you want to use, what do you use for the final scalar? Or, if you prefer, which of these do you prefer?

$san{copygroup}{$Group}{devicename}{$devicename}{pvol}{$pvol} = "";
$san{copygroup}{$Group}{devicename}{$devicename}{pvol}{$pvol} = 1;
$san{copygroup}{$Group}{devicename}{$devicename}{pvol}{$pvol} = 0;
@MIfe think I'll drop some more bounty on it if I can
@Basil errr... what do you want to represent? {'empty': '', 'zero': 0, 'yes/true': 1}[answer]
@Basil 1, so if($san{...}) evaluates to true
19:45
god, the idea of having kids is terrifying
@RoryAlsop Interesting.
@Iain wanted to do the same thing, not sure how yet :)
Really what I need is to be able to use keys to loop through all groups, for example. I don't always have a logical bottom level scalar
I suppose I can always make a useful bottom level scalar, but that would mean it's not a key
Sometimes I start off just defining something like $san{copygroup}{$Group} and then later on add properties like $san{copygroup}{$Group}{devicename}{$devicename}
19:50
That is a slightly lower power version
And it fits a family of 5, all the camping gear for a week and can power drift wonderfully. It even does 35 mpg (though not on the track)

SAP can suck it.

A: RJ45 female to male fault

Dennis KaarsemakerThe problem is that you're using rj45 females. No, I'm not being mysoginistic here, but you really should use cables of appropriate length instead of cobbling things together. Throw out these cables and buy new ones at correct length with rj45 males at both ends.

@DennisKaarsemaker Nice one ... misogynist
Yes, I'm thinking of giving someone the nickname "Cable Mysoginist"
not sure who yet
Me! Me!
20:17
@Magellan You can be the 8-port switcher
@MathiasR.Jessen I prefer the term "cable swinger" :)
@Magellan Cable chauvinist pig
@DennisKaarsemaker Cable Swingers? They must have seen some nice racks
@Magellan I bet you keep your RJ45 females in the kitchen barefoot and with a full payoad!

Woo! I'm a Pig!
20:25
@Magellan Let us know how your next keystone party goes.
@ScottPack Keystone light?
@JoelESalas Are you mentally damaged?
Ewwwwww
@ScottPack Probably from the beer
...
Should I just go back to lunch now?
I mean.... keystone light? I'm offended!
20:28
Liquid Plumr > Keystone Light
Generally speaking if your beer has the word "Light" at the end then you probably shouldn't waste your time drinking either.
@pauska implementing SAP was almost the end of Microsoft
> Good cheap beer. Excellent for beer pong. I was surprised that this beer was so poorly rated, because I have had many beers that make this look like a 10.
That's terrifying.
20:30
I've certainly tasted worse things than Keystone Light. Steel Reserve comes to mind. It will make you want to die.
@ScottPack ratebeer.com/Ratings/TheWorstBeers.asp -- according to that there are 13 worse beers in the world.
@Tanner KSL doesn't taste of metal, so that puts it above a lot of cheap beers
calling keystone beer, is like calling miley cyrus a musician
she sells plenty of music
it calls itself beer, the uneducated masses might THINK it's beer, but its not... it's shit
20:33
Corn, grain, urine flavors. Bleh.
@MattBear Don't misrepresent her like that. @Wesley has been listening to her and Drake all afternoon.
Is it not possible to paste gist links in comments?
Erm, yes, its just I should not have so many windows open to refresh..
for mass produced "beer", newcastle and guiness all day
@MattBear PBR (Piss Brewed Right)
20:39
@Wesley PBR > Bud Light > 3 day old cat piss
@MattBear beer == fermented malted starch. Keystone is beer, it's also shitty.
Bud Light = 2 day old cat piss, < fresh cat piss
@mdmarra @MattBear - just going back to the Lync discussion we were having yesterday; do you think it's at the stage where it can replace the PBX for a small office?
@MattBear bud is like making love in a boat: fucking close to water.
@MattBear I find most bottled Newcastle to have a weird metallic taste. I like some of the Dundees stuff for mass produced.
20:41
@MattBear Only if you can find the canned Newcastle (and pour it into a glass). The clear bottles == skunked by the time it gets to you.
@MattBear Some of the Blue Moon line is also ok, for a mass produced beer.
@markhenderson my new job is using it for telecommuting duties for sure. Will see how pervasive it is.
@Magellan Interesting
I'm mostly interested in a single feature that their current phone system has: When a call is signalled, it rings on the desk phone and on their PC phone client. When they click "answer" on their desktop PC, it's the actual phone on their desk that answers the call. Then they can manipulate the call that they're having on their phone by using the PC interface (by pressing hold, dragging the call into a conference, etc)
But the phone is fully independant, it's not plugged into the PC at all
@freiheit it's a 50/50, I've had some OK, and some REALLY GOOD from a bottle
bought a keg of it for my wedding, was awesome
@MarkHenderson the latest version is there for a small office that doesn't have anything beyond basic VOIP needs, imo. It integrates great with Exchange/UM stuff. But the thing with voice is that everyone just expects it to work, every time. Dial tone should ALWAYS be there...calls should be jitter free, etc.
@MarkHenderson I dont know about replacing the phones with it
might take more research, and let me know about that, because we might move that direction
20:46
@MattBear A keg is a really big can. Newcastle's clear bottles mean your experience of the beer depends heavily on tiny details of the transportation.
@TheCleaner Exactly. This is an office of 5 people that pretty much just wants to take a call, transfer it to someone else in the office, transfer it to a mobile phone, or have it go to voicemail if nobody answers
replace our ShoreTel shit
@freiheit yeah, the light passing through changes the chemical structure
@MattBear I want to use these people as a gunea pig to find out. I only really found out about Lync yesterday and have spent all fucking night reading up on it
@MarkHenderson we use it extensively at Qualcomm for meetings &c, we don't use the desktop telecom integration
But I don't want to blow $5k on physical hardware and the same on licenses just to find out it's shit
20:47
which is why Guiness in a bottle is usually good, because no light gets through
@MarkHenderson Well, Lync could do it, but it'd be a lot more expensive when you factor in the phones as well than a dinko digital system.
the only downside is the Lync client for OS X is kind of weak.
however, the Lync clients for iOS are really nice.
@TheCleaner hehe thought you said Dingo Digital Systems
@TheCleaner I'm not so sure; "Lync compatible" phones are about $250/each and the Lync licenses cost about the same as a new digital back-end
And I already have a SIP provider that I'm on very good terms with who can hook them up with a trunk and port their numbers over
damn it.. I have to put on my dev hat
get it out, dust the rat turds off of it, and show up this $85 an hour turd we brought in
20:50
@MattBear so what you're saying is you could be making $85 an hour, but you choose not to do so.
Well @MarkHenderson you could convince them to go with the E4 O365 offering.
@TheCleaner That's most certainly an offering I'm looking at
@RyJones I could lol... but I wouldn't be worth it yet
at consultant rates, you aren't paying them to learn it, your paying them cause they know it
wrong. you're paying them because they leave
@RyJones well, that too
20:52
just like a whore, you pay consultants not for the fucking, but for the leaving
@RyJones bad analogy, cause if it's the whores first time, then that can be fun too, and your still willing to pay
though if she needs you to teach her how to spread her legs, take off her panties, and which hole it goes into... She's just stupid
@RyJones I'm pretty sure I can get lots of women to leave me without paying them. Actually, I reckon some would pay me.
