BTW, this commercial is pure genius
I'm considering dumping this ~16% interest card onto a new 0% one...the interest is annoying.
but, then again...probably not a good idea for me.
and part 2:

Q: Is it worth it to use "balance transfer" credit cards, to take advantage of low-rate offered as sign-up incentives?

Nat_ReaI'm attracted by the low interest, but scared of having too many credit cards and losing track of payments, or worse, adversely-affecting my credit rating or future borrowing potential by having "too much credit". But maybe it's worth it for the cash savings?

It just pointed me at Bluebird....I could use that to pay rent every month. $1300 applied to a card that gives points. That's free points every month (since I split the rent, roommates pay me and I pay the rent)
=P
18:09
wonder if chris and nat rea have any connection
users 3 and 14 of the personal finance site
I wish I could pay rent on a credit card just to earn points
I'm still reading about it, but it seems like that might work
I hadn't thought of it, but I could do that
Today is the 66th Anniversary of Chuck Yeager officially breaking the sound barrier in the Bell X-1.
{| |} The Bell X-1, originally designated XS-1, was a joint NACA-U.S. Army Air Forces-U.S. Air Force supersonic research project built by the Bell Aircraft Company. Conceived in 1944 and designed and built during 1945, it reached nearly 1,000 mph (1,600 km/h) in 1948. A derivative of this same design, the Bell X-1A, having greater fuel capacity and hence longer rocket burning time, exceeded 1,600 mph (2,575 km/h) in 1954. The X-1 was the first airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight and was the first of the so-called X-planes, a series of American experimental rocket planes...
that's a ton of free points on my amazon card
18:12
@RyJones exactly
interesting
In my experience, landlords charge a premium to put rent on a CC, because they dont like paying the merchant fee
My rent would be $35 more per month if I were to pay it on CC
@MDMarra makes sense
wow
God I love that I can run repadmin from a powershell session to a DC
@voretaq7 Could I request a Room Topic change?
@NathanC ReadyForZero.com is pretty good
@MDMarra pay in pennies
18:16
@Cole Ah...you can buy a gift card with a CC, then load your bluebird account at a walmart with said gift card
@Magellan Welcome to The Comms Room - where nobody likes you and it's always your fault.
there's also "vanilla reload" cards that can be applied directly.
@MattBear Ya, because that won't piss them off or anything
it's illegal to refuse, and much more of a pain for them then a CC
@MattBear not true
18:17
@NathanC seems like a lot of work
Private businesses can refuse legal tender if they want
I need to get the GF a bank account
@Wesley =P Did you know that Chuck Yeager's still kicking around. 90 years old.
well, I need her to get one.
@Magellan Wow, I did not know that.
18:17
Her aunt WORKS at a credit union too. NO EXCUSE
@Cole dude, I've had a bank account since I was 12 or so
@RyJones No, I know I hear ya
I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, her mom is a shit show - and she's been more or less the parent (my girlfriend) in that relationship since she was 12-13
I feel like she's looking for someone to take care of her now. I get that.
I'm not going to do it, but I can understand it.
Might start using YNAB (You Need A Budget) it's manual but easier to use for infrequent bills and stuff.
@Cole Another advantage...if you can create a BB account and create a "sub-account"
with its own spending limits :P
18:20
@Magellan I liked reading his books...the accounts of him in the Bell X1 with the thing shaking like mad was a great read
@NathanC that too.
I like the idea of using it, but I have tons of stuff drawing from my checking account that it'd be a PITA to change all the numbers
@TheCleaner Pretty awesome. Definitely got the Right Stuff.
@NathanC I think I'm going to switch to a credit union from Citizens Bank
Jeez, does vcenter operations really need 16 GB of RAM?
18:22
@Magellan another great read if you are into aviation and is an easy to read journey is
@TheCleaner great book, ben rich is an interesting guy
@RyJones yeah...made me want to work in a think tank environment. Makes me wonder if this is how the early days at places like Google/FB/etc. are.
I really like Fedora 19, but it definitely has some performance issues.
@Wesley \m/ good-old trash-metal FTW!!!!
@dawud You know, I know it's subjective and largely up to personal preference, but I don't think anyone can go wrong with Suffocation. =)
Also, I've been listening to Morbid Angel and Carcass
18:30
@NathanC - added a comment to one of your answers...didn't want to mess with editing your post.
@Magellan Yes, but it will cost you $5 :)
@Magellan Of course! What would you like up there?
room topic changed to The Comms Room: This is *NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // 14 October 1947 - Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. We've been trying to fix the damn thing ever since! [be-the-change] [pwned-by-a-wild-markdown]*
I kinda want to go check this out
@voretaq7 Nice. =)
Thank you
18:32
FEDORA WHY YOU GO SO SLOW SOMETIMES
@Cole . . . sorry. Fedora will try harder to go slow at all times.
Well, fuck
@Wesley ahhh Carcass, so many good memories...!
@TheCleaner Thanks
@voretaq7 what do you use for your desktop OS?
18:33
@Cole OS X
fuck
ratpoison!! /ducks
I wish I used OS X.
@Cole so get on the train man
@voretaq7 Yep - that's a good one
18:34
@freiheit I love this Google+ Bike Commuter community. All they ever do is talk about bikes!!
@Wesley You should get a bike so that you can participate. :)
@freiheit I talk about bikes all the time!
WAT U TALKIN' 'BOUT ERIK?!
@RyJones $newjob I'm going to be contract so I'll use whatever I get
@Cole We Are the Borg. You Will be Assimilated. Resistance is Futile.
@freiheit Sorry, Eric with a 'C'
18:36
@Cole dude, a macbook air is only $1000 or so
So many K Eriks in here.
Gah...what's the vcenter ops manager console default?
it's not "admin" or "vmware" or "root"...
@RyJones I know, some places won't let you BYOD
Especially if you're a contractor for a large enterprise.
I had a MBP at NTAP
Loved it
We do not allow employees to bring their own laptop.
@Wesley You need more discussions of how many miles you've ridden so far this year; how long that ride last saturday was; dealing with rain, flats, freds, squirrels and other hazards; etc. Your n+1 needs to freakin' iterate already!
18:38
@ChrisS exactly, I doubt $newjob will either.
@freiheit Freds? Squirrels? I don't know about those things. Okay, I'll get some research done on those things before I can head over to REI
@Cole yes, but you would use OS X in your personal life
@RyJones oh I definitely want a mac for at home
my new job isn't a Fortune 500 company, but works with Fortune 500 companies.
@Cole Wait for the latest announcement from Apple in the next few weeks.
@Wesley good idea
18:40
Funny enough, they do my current employer's mutual insurance.
@RyJones @Wesley yeah definitely waiting for that
@Wesley Squirrels are small mammals. Furry critters with big fluffy tails and evil beady eyes.
so cold
you know, it's nice having friends who don't work in IT. They're useful in other ways.
@freiheit But how do they hinder bicycling?
Such as my friend's husband is fixing my car after the car accident, and he also fixed a few other things on it that were out of my control (Like a dent from someone opening their car door into my passenger door) Another friend does auto insurance, so she's looking up plans to help me save money
We have roadrunners, long tail lizards, and javelina down here. What complexities does that involve?
18:43
@Wesley What makes a javelin female?
@ScottPack A vagina.
@Wesley Where?
@ScottPack On a stick.
@Wesley You mean like a dildo?
@Wesley Do any of them respond to an oncoming threat by jumping back and forth instead of simply running off? Squirrels are known to try to jump through wheels as an evasive technique. This doesn't work out well for the bicycle, bicyclist or squirrel.
18:44
Vagina...on a stick.
what
@freiheit Ew. Stupid rodent. Javelina tend to charge when startled, yes.
@ScottPack Dick on a stick!
@ScottPack And yes, kinda of.
Peccary, AKA Javelina:
A peccary (or javelina and skunk pig; Portuguese javali and Spanish jabalí, sajino or pecarí) is a medium-sized mammal of the family Tayassuidae, or New World pigs. Peccaries are members of the artiodactyl suborder Suina, as are the pig family (Suidae) and possibly the hippopotamus family (Hippopotamidae). They are found in the southwestern area of North America and throughout Central and South America. Peccaries usually measure between in length, and a full-grown adult usually weighs between about . The word “peccary” is derived from the Carib word pakira or paquira. Peccaries, whic...
@Wesley Ok. I was going to post an image from the googles but I'm not going to. Out of respect
Oh I told you guys I'm legally male now, right? I got my birth certificate finally like a week or so ago.
@Cole Congratulations!
Sorry, it's a very exciting thing for me.
18:46
@ScottPack You found the fucksaw?
@freiheit thanks! I almost cried, then I was like BUT I'M A MAN SO I CANNOT
@Cole Oh wow, I did not know that!
That's not really what happened, I just did a happy dance in my kitchen with my cat. He didn't like it.
Being male is exciting. You can pee standing up, unlock your iPhone, repair an engine...the world is your clam.
@Cole So instead you got drunk, vomited on yourself, and passed out in the street!
18:47
lol clam.
@Cole It's ok for men to cry. Sometimes as often as once a year.
@freiheit During a particularly emotional year, of course.
@freiheit good to know
It's much harder to cry after being on T
@freiheit where do you get this shit?
@RyJones My ass
18:49
@RyJones The trick is to lean down and rest your beard on the keyboard. Pure unadulterated man comes out.
@ScottPack only if you're watching Old Yeller or your team just lost the Superbowl
@RyJones The marriage or death of a girl child is also acceptable.
@ScottPack acceptable reasons to start killing people, sure
@RyJones What about severe physical pain?
18:52
@freiheit Pussy.
@freiheit The couple of times I was in a lot of physical pain I was too far out of it to cry
@RyJones Or the first part of Up...
@freiheit who watches kid's shows?
not men
@RyJones nerds
geeks
sysadmins
(gotta watch the movies where there's a sysadmin team in the credits.)
Your mom.
18:56
@l0c0b0x The map was a nice touch.
@ward How hard is it to get a passport to Canada?
Any other 'nadians here?
@MikeyB?
@Wesley You mean for you to travel into Canada?
@ScottPack Yes. And presumably leave a few weeks later.
@Wesley Business or pleasure?
@ScottPack Pleasure.
18:59
BEcause, you get a Passport from the US State Department.
Visiting a friend in BC
That can take weeks or months.
Oh well heck, that's right.
You get a Visa to enter into another country.
For countries like Canada you just tell them you're there for pleasure and you get stamped at the booth.
You're going to BC to visit someone for a few weeks?
@ScottPack A week at least I'd think. Perhaps.
19:01
Man, I cannot seem to get a job... WTH!?
The duration of that type of visa is dependent on the granting country, but it's probably going to be on the order of months nor days.
@ScottPack Right - I recall at one point in history all you had to do was flash an American drivers license to get across the border. Gone are those innocent times.
@Wesley Traveling to Britain I've never had any issues with planning ahead. Just so long as you have a passport.
@Wesley From what I remember reentry was more the problem. That was a long time ago, and I already had a passport anyway.
I've applied to so many jobs that I've lost count, and not ONE has replied in any way... The last two jobs all I had to do was sneeze in their direction, and they're like "Would you like a job?" What am I doing wrong this time?
@cole Congratz, Dude.
@KevinSoviero I need good sysadmins. But i'm uk :(.
@MIfe I'm Austin, TX... That would be an interesting daily commute! ;)
@KevinSoviero How many years of experience do you have?
hey, more style scripting cause the dev cant do it.... man I need to become a consultant
19:14
@KevinSoviero Ah. I noticed that's all consulting, which may be your problem. How many billed hours?
@Magellan I don't know... A lot?
@Magellan thanks!
@KevinSoviero If you don't know, why would I hire you?
my ears ringing damn it...
@Magellan Um... Hang on... This may take a moment.
19:16
thats what I get for shooting 00 magnum shells without ear plugs
@MattBear I dunno. Quite a few people I know don't like hiring people that previously worked as self-employed consultants.
@Magellan well... im finding out that I'm better then the "specialists" we bring in
and they make 4x the hourly pay I get
lol
@Magellan I don't know how to calculate that... If I had to make an educated guess I would say... 300+ ?
i agree with @Magellan, as a recruiter 'self employed consultant' indicates 'failed business' or 'no professional experience in a business'
@KevinSoviero Are you confident enough to put that on your resume? If you are, you should.
19:19
@MattBear I think your Sharepoint dev is "special" in a very different sense of the word.
@84104 No.
@KevinSoviero Pessimistically, 300 hours is the equivalent of 2 months of work. Figure in meetings and other crap you'd see in a regular work environment, you're talking 4 months tops, yes?
@Magellan Look, screw that. I'm getting sick and tired of being told what I know. I'm a damn good Linux admin, and I have never been unable to do something... Ever.
Uh
@KevinSoviero And, precisely, how old are you?
19:23
21 mins ago, by Kevin Soviero
Man, I cannot seem to get a job... WTH!?
I think you've found your problem.
2
@Magellan Ya, 20... I know how that sounds... Now you know why I started a consulting firm to begin with, i.e., because no one would hire me at 17 w/o paper experience.
@KevinSoviero You're 20? An attitude like that from a 20 year old would get you booted so fast that your ass would bounce 4 or 5 times.
4
@KevinSoviero I dont meed to blow smoke up your arse, but dont be too convinced by what you know. There is always someone better t han you.
4
Frankly your age works against you.
@MIfe I know
@KevinSoviero Come talk to me in another 7-8 years when you've actually done enough for something to blow up.
If nothing you'e ever done has gone wrong, you haven't seen the elephant.
19:25
People will see that and consider you being inexperienced. It was the same with me. I have been doing Linux since 15 (now 30 -- ugh) and its MUCH easier to find work, irrespective of having practical knowledge of Linux at 20 (albeit nieve knowledge in hindsight)
I started in the field at 21, but I worked in food service and retail for 5 years prior.
@Magellan Of course things have gone wrong, but it was fixed, and life went on.
My customer service experience is what landed me the job, over my knowledge.
I've managed to take our entire network down...twice.
Well, I got my break in a small ISP who were willing to hire me for cheap :).
19:26
But, I learned. :D
@NathanC should have learned the first time ;)
@NathanC My first week on the job I caused a 1.5h network outdated affecting nearly 60,000 customers.
@Cole Hey now...didn't help we only had one DC at the time ;)
@NathanC "I... the whole network... again..."
@MIfe my first break was for an electrical contracting firm doing desktop support.
@NathanC good point.
19:28
First time was a GPO that applied a "fuck you packets" rule to its firewall. Second time was installing our antivirus suite which also had a "lolno" packet rule
@NathanC hahaha nice
@NathanC ah, at least you didn't do the same thing twice...exactly.
Granted, second time wasn't a full outage as our secondary DC took over DNS okay, just AD wasn't replicating properly so no new logins
@ScottPack My favorite one was the time that I mounted a DVD .iso across the network via an NFS share when the file server had <4GB of RAM. Panic'd that system like nobody's business.
This conversation is depressing me, since I'm used to making $70K/yr.
19:29
@Magellan I've never taken down a file server, though that would be fun.
@KevinSoviero You're 20. How are you used to anything?
(Not trying to be mean; I'm 25. I'm still not used to anything...)
@Tanner I'm not like others my age... I don't hang out with any others my age, since I can't stand their laid-back attitude... If I'm not going 100mph I feel like I'm going insane.
@KevinSoviero Your not really winning any friends here. Whether or not that is true (frankly you may be trolling) you are either incredibly neive or would be impossible to work. with.
@KevinSoviero I'm making $33k a year @ 23.
@Wesley ?? You mean to visit? Except for losers who don't own bicycles, I think Canada lets everyone in.
6
19:31
Hell, when I was 23 I was commuting 120 miles (round trip) daily to be the IT team for a place making $9/hr.
You have to start somewhere. :P
At 23 I was making $56K
I think I was making 70k actually, but thats besides the point. I originally was on half that at 22.
I think I'd get you all depressed with how little I'm making at 50. But the job and company are awesome, so it's all good.
@Ward I'd rather have a better environment than more $$
19:32
@Ward Thank you. Always makes me happy when there's old farts like you in the room. I don't feel quite so ancient. =)
No amount of money makes your coworkers suck less.
@Cole ^^ this
@Cole I'm trying out that readyforzero thing...it hasn't been able to link any of my accounts yet.
@Ward Yeah, sometimes when these guys start talking salary I feel like one of the lowest paid guys in the room.
With John Gardeniers gone, I'm pretty much the oldest kicking around.
19:33
@NathanC takes a bit, kinda slow.
Their blog is actually pretty good about money saving tips and advice
Ah, BoA failed. :/ boo
Not just like "oh duh" things like "cook at home" or "cut your cable"
and i just logged in fine with the password I gave it
@NathanC yeah sometimes it's a PITA
I wouldn't mind having the energy, salary, and general bad-assedness of ewwwwwwhite
19:34
It also doesn't appear to support most credit unions
aka, my car loan and one of my cards >_>
I feel fortunate that the job I'm going to is more money than this one. I was debating taking a $15K paycut because it was so bad here.
@Ward that man is a maniac. I'm pretty sure he never sleeps.
But I'll settle for awesome coworkers, and consistently winning Bike to Work Week.
I'll stick with using Mint i think. it has a goal tracker and so forth
I'm considering a paycut for better conditions too. Quite a significant one.
I will be contracting to start, so I took a sizeable increase in pay (obviously took it up the arse in benefits) but even my perm. salary will be $10K-$20K more than I make now with even better benefits.
I've heard nothing but great things from people I know who have and do work there.
So I'm excited.
I wish it was casual and not business casual, but oh well.
19:36
@Cole lol obamacare?
damn you, markdown
2
I am so sick of seeing 'Wintel' in job posts.
@NathanC they offer blue cross blue shield for me (the consulting firm), CIGNA is kind of a PITA.
@RyanRies agree
but no vaca, 401K matching, etc.
It makes me want to get out my time machine and travel back to when people actually said shit like 'Wintel,' and spelled Microsoft with a dollar sign...
Oh lord jesus
I just checked into the Heartburn Hotel - need some Tums, stat.
Hmm...I rebooted my vops server, and now it's uh...dead.
19:38
It's dead, Jim.
@Ward I think Miles Erickson (sp?) might be a little older.
@MIfe what kind of sysadmin do you need? where exactly? and, are you in charge of hiring?
@dawud I'm part of the hiring process, I dont make the final decision. We're in Oxford.
@Ward Yeah, to visit. But hey, I hear BC is high tech. Maybe I could score some work there.
We need people with a lot of breadth of experience, who strive to understand the science and engineering behind operating systems.
Seems a bit cheesy but it kind of is like that.
19:41
Oh...vCenter gave it a new IP
it is not
Depth is not a total requirement although in some areas we have some expectation of breadth.
@MIfe Sounds legit. I wish I had a firmer grasp of computer science, and in fact I'm hoping to some day get to ASU to take CS classes.
Heh, my environment scored an 83 on vops
Its not necessary to know a lot of programming languages but being able to perform root cause analysis may require being competent enough to read something written in a systems programming language (c) understand it and make a solid conclusion on that basis.
C mainly because most of the systems man pages represent their syscalls in C, for example. But that is really the only reason.
19:43
@MIfe is this some security related business?
No, not completely, but having an awareness is very useful.
I've seen you've had a handle on some of the SELlinux questions on here for example. Thats useful.
My answers only show my research efforts and some of my real experience.
Meaning, practical experience
Depends on the role, we tend to grade people into 'engineering' and 'sysadmin' roles. Engineering requires quite the depth of knowledge. With sysadmins we're not that harsh though.
Erm, to give you a feel for engineering, I recently answered a question that required quite a depth of root cause analysis to originally determine the answer. I'll go lift it.
1
A: Both servers running keepalived become master

MIfeThis can actually be caused a bug. I know because I've had to fix it myself. According to the RFC, when priorities are equal on both nodes; If the Priority in the ADVERTISEMENT is equal to the local Priority and the primary IP Address of the sender is greater than the l...

This is an actual problem we had and rectified.
Yeah, I read that when you first mentioned it here this weekend(?)
I think its an ancient question actually :). But somehow got bumped and I saw it.
That one involved stepping through a debugger and analysing the struct contents, probably a little more than we'd typically expect to be honest.
19:51
Wow totally forgot about the woman I used to go to for alterations near my parents house
@MIfe IIRC there's a process that goes through and bumps old questions with no accepted/upvoted answers
(basically anything that's "Unanswered")
At 2 years of age, I doubt anyones going to come back and accept it ;)
@MIfe I'm not strong in C at all. I only started to be interested in it very recently.
@MIfe no, but an upvoted answer makes it an "answered" question so it can go back and languish in obscurity now :)
The sysadmin stuff has less of a focus on that. Although tracing a problem to a root cause is still something we are keen to see someone demonstrate.
19:53
@MIfe I'm good at learning :)
How about shell scripting?
@MIfe This is true. And the discussion right before I got an actual emailed offer letter was effectively a 3rd interview where they were asking me about career goals to make sure they aligned with business goals. I'm not a Dev, but most shops want to see people interested in picking those skills up along the way.
I need a virtual router for Hyper-V. I'm thinking just PFSense or even CentOS 6 with IP Forwarding and NAT enabled. Anyone got any better ideas?
@MIfe That should not be a problem
@MDMarra vyatta?
@MDMarra could run GNS3 for a Cisco router
19:55
@dawud Do you use any interpretive languages? Python is something we like.
@Cole I don't wanna get that wild
then Vyatta like @dawud said
I just want a private network Hyper-V lab that I can route/NAT to the outside when I feel like it
Never used Vyatta, do they have a virtual appliance?
@Wesley I've got an empty apartment you could stay at, I might even loan you a bike.
Or is it a router-centrix Linux distro or something?
19:57
@MIfe I've written python in my old days with WebLogic, you can use jython to automate stuff. It is not too difficult. But I haven't used it for administrative tasks.
So...my girlfriend convinced me to buy a guinea pig a couple days ago >.> <.<
Vyatta is a Linux distro
@MDMarra it's Linux - I don't think they have an appliance though
@NathanC weeeeeeeeeeeee! squeak! weep weep weep! wooooooooooo!
@NathanC wat
19:58
@NathanC Let the experimentation begin?
With a sort of Cisco IOS feel to it
@Ward How close are you to Burnaby? I'll rent from you. =)
@84104 Yes...yes...:p
@Cole Exactly, lol.
Don't let your girlfriend convince you to buy anything, ever.
It's not bad actually, for free
19:59
Then again, I actually did want a pet of some sort. Couldn't really have a cat since the rent would go up and they're more espensive
@RyanRies Better than PFSense?
@dawud I would probably need to ask you a few technical questions to get a feel for your ability. But here (in front of all this rabble) is probably not a good idea :D.
That's how I ended up with a cat that doesn't let me sleep at night, and wakes me up at 4AM for treats and a new car when I had my other one paid off.
@MDMarra I might say yes but I think it's because I know Vyatta better than PFSense
@Wesley Our spare apartment's in Richmond, not really close to Burnaby. Why the hell would you want to be close to BBy?
19:59
@Cole It's technically hers. It's just living with me since she can't have one at her dorm. lol
