A: Windows 2008 Domain - DHCP on Server vs Firewall

DKNUCKLESAt the risk of splitting hairs, it should be noted that there are no longer PDC's, but rather PDC emulators, which is a FSMO role. With that said asking to provide a pro's and con's list for this would depending on what you're hoping to use as your firewall appliance. Perhaps the most notable d...

@MDMarra I thought this was humorous
Why would someone minus 1 that and not explain why? I actually really need to know if what MDMarra is saying is correct or not. — blizz 6 hours ago
He may want to look at your rep & profile to know if you're correct or not :P
I don't know Windows so I'm not commenting or voting either way.
@Cole I've been wrong, it happens. But it's a stupidly easy thing to look up
Boss has a vaca day today, another guy called out sick - is it 1PM on Friday yet?
@MDMarra I agree.

Q: Windows 2008 - Real Scenarios for Nonauthoritative and Authoritative Restore

George LuongI have read information about Nonauthoritative and Authoritative Restore methods on Microsoft Page. But I don't understand the concepts and the real case scenarios about them (When we use them). On Windows Server 2008 R2 we have AD Recycle Bin, that's great, no problem. But I think I must know th...

WINDOWS QUESTION!!!
I need to expand a Customer's C: drive.
On Windows 2003
nice
what's the safe method?
backup and restore
12:54
In VMware, I mount the C: VMDK to another VM and expand.
@ewwhite Do you have contiguous free space at the end of the volume?
But this is a physical HP box.
@MDMarra I will... I'm expanding the underlying array by adding dicks.
4
@ewwhite snerk
diskpart
select disk 0
select partition 1
extend
Assuming C:\ is on disk 0 and is partition 1
12:55
@MDMarra but this do-nothing sysadmin consultant they have has allowed the infrastructure to atrophy to this point.
@ewwhite you could either backup/restore or grow the array and logical drive then boot off something like diskpart
right, I need to boot off of something else... in Linux land, I'd be on a rescue disk and fdisk.
I'd probably use a Ubuntu or GParted live CD.
@ewwhite Why do you need to boot off of something else?
I've used GParted
12:57
C: drive is in use... can't make the change while the drive is mounted, can I?
OOh wait you can't extend a system partition in C: on 2003
You can on non-legacy operating systems.
Does it have to be online? Or can you take the server down?
I can take it down
produce company.... who needs fruit deliveries!?!?

Just migrate them to a new file server
The domain controller is on a server that predates Windows 2003.

12:58
What sort of RAID config? I must admit I've never used GParted on a server.
@ewwhite The singular DC?
yet I just installed $40k of Fusion-io in their Linux server.
@MDMarra yes, I need your help on this one.
@MDMarra the singular DC took 22 minutes to reboot...
@ewwhite sounds like it
NT4!
22 minutes to reboot, what's it running on? a toaster?

So screw your crappy servers, how about them Red Sox/Patriots last night!
Spot the DC!!

@MDMarra YEAH BUDDY!
Adjacent to the AS400... above the barracudas...
@ewwhite I don't see a toaster.
Is it one of the Compaq proliants?
13:04
Yeah I was gonna say
behind the Gen8 ProLiant with Fusion-io cards
that's an old box
@MDMarra Yes, the older Pentium III Compaq ProLiant.
Dude, take that thing out back and put it out of it's misery with a sledge hammer.
We have a Compaq Proliant in the server room. ML 350 G2 I think. In storage.

@ewwhite you know old hardware right?
RILOE II, WTF is it?
it keeps popping up in iLO documentation, but I've never seen one
Are they 900 MHz copper mines? I remember being so stoked breaking the 1GHz barrier overclocking those.
@DennisKaarsemaker Yeah, I installed many RILOE and RILOE II cards.
@MDMarra 900MHz, yes.
@DennisKaarsemaker I'll show you a fun photo...
@DennisKaarsemaker drop the leading R and trailing E
13:06
@ewwhite is it basically the precursor to ilo?
@DennisKaarsemaker Exactly correct
Integrated Lights-Out, or iLO, is an embedded server management technology exclusive to Hewlett-Packard but similar in functionality to the Lights out management (LOM) technology of other vendors, for example Sun/Oracle's ILOM, Dell DRAC and the IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter. iLO is useful as an out-of-band management technology. The physical connection is an Ethernet port that can be found on most Proliant servers of the 300 and above series. Features iLO makes it possible to perform activities on an HP server from a remote location. The iLO card has a separate network connection (an...
k, then I will stop caring about it
hah, that wikipage links to my software \o/
HP got a bit ahead of themselves, I think.
Firmware: LoM. Version: 2.22 (1 Jan 3000).
@DennisKaarsemaker Heh... it was a card and fit into special PCI slots.
the card had a monitor port, PS/2 dongle and ethernet...
as well as a ribbon cable that attached to the motherboard.
for some of my servers, I even had a fucking jumper cable that I needed to attach to the power switch...
Jesus, what's that? 14U?
13:11
since the RILOE had an external power brick, this allowed remote control of server power

I've had two thanksgivings in the US - one was lovely, one less so stuck in a hotel in Houston
@ewwhite ah - sorry, is that a big deal over there or just one of those ones people take off but don't really celebrate?
@Chopper3 no big deal... just creepy
@Chopper3 School is closed, generally
creepy?
But other than that, people with real jobs work
13:17
@ewwhite Hook up ALL the UPS!
@Chopper3 see my link above
If they were that paranoid they should have just gotten a backup generator...
@NathanC boom!
@NathanC damn I didn't realise the big white ones were UPS compenets
Ours is in-line natural gas and kicks on within 3 seconds.
13:18
@tombull89 they are just the battery units for the UPS units stacked on top
I've installed way too many of those, too...
there are car batteries inside.
@MDMarra Sorry, wife's car wouldn't start. Also, rather cold outside.
@ScottPack Apology accepted but dont let it happen again
wow - serverfault.com/a/545839/1435 - confused question and then I'd added a confused answer - really not my best, will edit
@MDMarra I had someone ask me about disabling Windows search on a server instance, I can't remember if it was 2k3 or 2008. From what I can tell disabling that wouldn't be any big deal, but are there any weirdnesses that the indexer server gets used for that I need to know about?
13:20
There's not a lot of reason to have it enabled on a Windows server unless you're working on it all the time and searching (bad)
It's even recommended to not enable it on large file servers for performance reasons (theres a separate index service for file servers)
Ok good, that was my feeling.
It is enabled by default, so my concern was that something deep in the bowels of the system used it internally.
@ScottPack then you could use one of these batteries...
@ewwhite Damn...how long did all those batteries last? lol
@ewwhite Couldn't hurt.
I can't imagine how much power draw those things have when charging
13:22
@ScottPack Well, when you click the start menu and start typing in 2008/vista and later, all of that instant-result goodness for launching programs is from the search service
But if you can live without that, it shouldnt actually break anything
@MDMarra After several minutes of charging it still wouldn't start. So either the battery in my Fit isn't up to jumping her Rav4 or the battery was so dead that it was going to take a rather long time to charge it up to useful. So she's taking my car and will stop by the dealership. Her battery is still under warranty.
@MDMarra Cool beans. I desperately hope the sysadmins can live without that.
I had a battery die in my honda 6 months after I bought it new off the lot
They hooked the in-dash GPS up wrong and it was constantly sipping at the battery
idiots
@DennisKaarsemaker This? people.freebsd.org/~jcagle/#ilo
anyone can answer about load test through JMeter?
13:24
@MDMarra doh.
What do you drive again?

Q: Continuous hits to the server with Jmeter

Asma WakeelI have 100 threads in JMeter which I want to hit a server 12 times in a loop. But each time 100 threads will run and pause for 5 seconds and then resume hitting the servers for next 100 times.

My rental car right now is a 2012 Honda Civic
@NathanC 9 hours.

Q: Diskstation backup tasks being deleted?

Nathan CWe use a diskstation as a backup destination for most of the servers on our network. Daily, these backups are sent to an external hard drive using the backup and restore tool. Drives are swapped each day. We have two backups for user data and mail data that are working properly so far. However, ...

13:25
@MDMarra She keeps the GPS plugged into the power port all the time, but that's on accessory power. She leaves her lights in the on position all the time, (no daytime runners) but they turn off with the key.
@ewwhite For all the money spent on batteries they could've easily gotten a natural gas or diesel generator...
@MDMarra the 2012 Civic (I think this is a pretty basic one) is pretty peppy - but I miss my Mazda3 :(
@MDMarra So I don't really now. This battery is from July. Hopefully it was a dud and last night was just the chilly night that killed it.
@asma You asked that question two minutes ago. Give it some time to get views before dropping in unannouced and posting the question, yeah?
13:27
@MDMarra I'm now thinking of buying one of those AC powered quick boost charging things. This is the first time we've not both had sedans, and there's an actual real difference in engine.
@NathanC I sold those monsters for $600 each... I think generator wasn't possible due to a business park restriction.
@ScottPack I've left my interior lights on more than once and I have an inverter constantly connected that stays on all the time...and I haven't had issues in over a year..so probably a dud battery.

Morning .
@ScottPack I've got one in my trunk that's also an air compressor and radio
Can't vouch for it though, as I've never ever used it
13:28
@NathanC That's my hope. The annoying thing is that it's 4 months old, from the dealership, and has an 84 month warranty.
That's exactly what I said not to do...
@ScottPack Yeah. When I first bought the car the battery was dead when I went to test drive it lol. The dealer replaced the battery for me.
I think I found a tailor finally.
@MDMarra I mean, half of it is how nice it would be to charge the battery without having to rely on another car. The other half would be a visual indicator of how much charge it has.
@Cole Good man.
@Chopper3 Mandar has had some interesting questions
13:29
@ScottPack friend I was hanging out with last night told me about them. She said they matched the thread/pattern to a T.
That you can't even tell that it was altered
@ewwhite I wish I had pictures handy, but not too long ago I saw a site that had 30U worth of APC rack mount UPSes. Of that there were 6x1U servers installed and only 2 were powered on.
@ScottPack I see that crap a lot... People shouldn't buy rackmount batteries.
@Cole Excellent. Word of warning, a good tailor will damn near grope you.
@ewwhite Ah, that would do it. In that case if those servers were that crucial it would've been worth the colo costs.
@ScottPack yeah I'll...wear a packer that day LOL
Otherwise he's gonna be like "is...is that a vagina?"
2
13:31
My wife is meeting the Stanley Cup at work today.
@Cole I wouldn't, unless you really want to wear one normally. Otherwise the fit could be all wrong.
@ewwhite we have rackmount UPS's and battries
D:
@ScottPack I normally dont
@tombull89 I think I'm spoiled by colocation facilities.
@Cole Unless it makes you really uncomfortable I'd probably just own up and try to discretely mention it. If there's one thing you can count on a good tailor to be it's discrete.
13:33
@ewwhite how come?
Stanley Cup is coming?
@DanilaLadner It makes tours around Chicago.
and her boss is surprising the staff with the Stanley Cup at the office this morning.
Cool stuff.
@ewwhite We have gobs of them, but we also have nearly 200 buildings, each with at least one closet in them with equipment. Normally only a single telco rack with some switching equipment. We use the UPSes to rid us through blips, not to keep us going .
@Chopper3 - I don't think you'll get very far helping this guy out:
Loading a computer to see if it'll shut off from overheating...
13:35
his other questions are pretty odd as well.
@NathanC ask @tombull89 about that...errr...I think it was him that lost a rack of servers last week due to no a/c
Disk cleanup seems to be doing the trick load-wise lol
@ScottPack he may not even notice
@Cole Maybe not. Depending on exactly how much tailoring is going on it's hard to tell.
@ScottPack just hemming
13:37
I measured my inseam... 27" -_-
Mr. Tiny Legs over here.
@TheCleaner that OP is trying to get around some organisational issues
@DennisKaarsemaker Aha.
@Cole Inseam is such a fucking bogus measure.
@Cole I probably had 3-4 different inseams in my closet because the rise is different based on the pants.
@ScottPack ah
@Cole The outseam, however, is the same on every single fucking one of them.
13:38
I think it'll be around 28" for the outseam
29"L is too long
@TheCleaner Well, this particular computer is a desktop that sits on the factory floor and is used in packaging
dust galore
@Cole I would hope you have more than a 1" rise. Otherwise you'll need to be waxing just to put on pants.
I think getting all the dust out fixed it well enough. We'll find out.
@Iain yeah, I figured. But hoping to flex his PhD muscles could get him in trouble. Better like you said to get with the people that control the infrastructure.
@ScottPack I guess I'll find out soon
@TheCleaner Ah, that would work. We're actually moving away from physical desktops for an embedded solution (as in, terminals) so we don't have to worry about mechanical breakdown
@TheCleaner after answering his question yesterday as soon as I saw that I thought hackery
@NathanC good choice. I actually love Jack PC myself: chippc.com/products/jack-pc-lxj
Why does hair on one side of my face grow faster/more? Is this normal!?
@Cole no, it means one half of your face is dying
13:47
DAMMIT
don't worry, you can fix that by shaving your facial hair into a goatee and wearing a top hat
Oh great, I have a goatee - just need a top hat!
oh, if you already have a goatee, it's worse.
You'll need to go for pinstripe moustache and soul patch
DAMMIT
and maybe a beret
13:51
@Cole Is that side facing the window all day long? Maybe you are part plant.
@TheCleaner nope, and I sleep on my right side (where it grows faster/more)
gravity!
My right sideburn will actually grow in, and quickly. Left side is like "nah bro"
@TheCleaner We're gonna be using Pis
They're a lot cheaper than most terminals lol
@NathanC you've been influenced by the Comms Room too much. :)
13:58
@TheCleaner nope not me
I'm sure with viral vids most have seen the whole pyschic coffee shop vid. That thing is crazy, but I kept thinking that around here at least 2 concealed carry folks would've shot the lady.

Q: Growing a hardware RAID-10 array

@tombull89 ah it does support RAID10
14:20
What's the difference between 410 and 410i? Integrated into the motherboard rather than a card?
Yes.
same controller
Can you even convert from RAID1 to RAID10 without formatting?
I'm gonna go with "no" but I'll defer to our HP Wizards.
His question is worded weird though.
Basically I have added two additional disks, expanded array and now I want to grow my c: filesystem to take advantage of new space?
Yes, you can

dude has the new space
he just needs to grow his C: partition to take advantage of the new space.

@tombull89 On a serious note - it has such a small remit that it's not worth it. If you come accross it, you'll learn quick enough - you just need to be aware of the pitfalls (I.e., only one on a domain etc)
14:34
@tombull89 The need is there for very small companies that want to self administer a small Windows shop. But I point those shops to a small NAS, workgroup setup with Office 365 now.
@ewwhite I've touched that
Oh yeah.. you're a hockey fan.
My people don't get down with that.
Grant Scott Fuhr (born September 28, 1962) is a Canadian former ice hockey goaltender in the National Hockey League and former goaltending coach for the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2003, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Fuhr was born to one black parent and one white parent but was adopted as a baby by a white family and raised in Spruce Grove, Alberta. Grrr... no need to cat the file first.

No need to whine about it either.
I hate people who whine about cat
File was 2GB
And I don't mean the wesleycat
He deserves whining
@DennisKaarsemaker You and me both.
@ewwhite So it wasted some extra time on that guy's part. It's cool, there are plenty of PIDs where that one came from.
Mayyybe
14:59
If you run out of PIDs because someone ran cat a few times then you have much bigger problems.
@ewwhite, you're not in HFT anymore. LEAVE THE CAT ALONE!
Out here in the real world nobody cares about wasting 3 cpu cycles on cat
