Q: Why should i have a domain controller?

JamexcbI'm not a windows guy. And all my working life was managing macs and linux. Why should I have a windows domain controller? I only see disavantages. What i have: 90 computers to 90 people. 5 printers, login is diffent and not centralized, because it's dificult to use a strong password in a pr...

Sometimes I wonder... Who hires and pays these guys?

@Wesley You ever seen the stats on purely vehicular deaths? Cars are soooo much scarier than bikes!!!

@faker Who the hell upvoted that turd?!
@faker 90 machines and the guy doesn't want a domain controller because it's another thing that could go wrong. Check please! I'm done with the internet for today.

@Wesley "All the computes are different (it's a nightmare)"
yeah, guess why?

@freiheit That's just a ploy by the left wing bicycle global warming environmentalist ice cap hugging granola eating sandal wearing whack-nuts to get you to give up your American right to bear pickup trucks!

@Wesley So you've read my manifesto, then?

10:13 PM
@faker VTC as too broad, but really "You are beyond any ability to educate"
@freiheit Why Hairy Chested Bears Make the Best Lovers? Yes. Loved it.

@Wesley You forgot the bicycle and granola parts. :-P

(organic free-range local granola, of course)

@freiheit Free trade!

@Wesley Goes without saying

10:16 PM
@faker Also, what kind of janky servers is he running on 400watts?
Sure, a low end Dell / HP will probably idle at 250, but... I dunno.
This is essentially how this question reads to the rest of us: "Hi, I'm interested learning about Active Directory. Here are a bunch of things about it that are completely false. I'm totally misinformed here, someone prove me wrong." I think what you need is a good book, or some time at the Microsoft Virtual Academy's AD coursesMDMarra 35 secs ago
@MDMarra I laughed out loud for real. =D
> I don't like to spend money on Windows licences and servers.
It's called operating expenses. Businesses have them. I don't like paying for rackspace and bandwidth, but I do. Suck it up.
Although my DC is still giving me 100Mbps when that's not what I should have...

@Wesley NO! I STEALS IT ALL!

@voretaq7 Calls SPA airstrike

vampire taps @Wesley's 10base5 uplink. Uses gum wrappers to get power from the PDU. Cobbles together servers from TomTom's old phones!

My Supermicros pull 42w :)

@voretaq7 Dude should just make a SAMBA domain. I mean, c'mon, it's just as good.
3

10:20 PM
@Wesley on the power supply it says 400W
are you telling me it uses less?!?

@Wesley What are you meant to have?

@faker =D

@MDMarra - fuck you and your capitilisation. If I want to run my DC's on 128 of RAM I WILL AND I WILL WRITE IT AS 1Gb

@MarkHenderson Just 20Mb. Bare bones rackspace that clients use just to park little-used websites and my own infrastructure. I'll upgrade it as necessary. My streaming client's website is in my rack and on game nights the website pushes about 10Mbps peak to handle 300-400 active users and 10 pageviews per second.

@MarkHenderson no

10:22 PM
@Wesley Starred for Punishment.

@Wesley Do they give you 100Mbps line speed and then bill the 95th percentile?

can someone close that idiotic AD question as a dupe of this please: serverfault.com/questions/402580/…
I forgot it existed

@MarkHenderson No! That's the awesome thing so far. I was capped at 20Mbps hard, and then one day I noticed I was pulling in near 100Mb on a big download.

@MDMarra Is it really a duplicate?

His question is basically "hurr durr what is AD"
I think that the last heading answers it

10:24 PM
@voretaq7 Fuckin aye it is. If we close eveyr licensing question with "fuck off" we should close every "AD SUCKS LOLKTHXBAI" with that question

Ok, I'm going to go drink a beer on my balcony and read this SCOM book
byebye freaks

@MarkHenderson His question isn't "How does AD work" it's "Why should I use it?"

@voretaq7 Im reading between the lines. He has no idea what AD is or how it works

I don't care either way, the question is stupid, and even as a "No Windows" guy I know you install AD to manage Windows networks for the same reasons you install configuration management and LDAP for Unix networks
@MarkHenderson I'm reading between the lines: He's not qualified to admin the network he's been handed.

@voretaq7 Damn straight

10:26 PM
Like, less qualified than me. And that's saying something in the Windows world!

@voretaq7 His question is "Why should I use it?" because underneath is "I don't know how AD works, plz to be hlpng?"
@MarkHenderson Way to go answering that question so it sticks around, dude. =P
-7 votes. That was quick.

@Wesley Love being a mod

@MarkHenderson But I want to see him come back and cry! =(
Don't delete it!
NOOOO!
I hope he brings it up on meta.
"IRE AND FROTH!"

@Wesley I wouldn't delete his question for at least a few days

@voretaq7 Let the coyotes pick at the bones a little more.

10:29 PM
@Wesley If you all can't play nice I'll lock it...

Okay, I'm done grossly abusing the corpse. You can trust me.
6

but he should come here, see the duplicate, and read it

And then post bitter indignation in meta.
pleaseohpleaseohplease

@Wesley Can't ever trust a cat not to grossly abuse a corpse.

@Wesley Nominee, Best Quote Starred Out Of Context, 2013.
@freiheit He didn't say he WOULDN'T. He just said he was DONE :-D

10:31 PM
@Wesley Not going to delete it

hashtag-SubtleDifferences

@MarkHenderson :-*

I wonder if he also thinks it's a good idea to run 90 Linux clients without some sort of LDAP integration.

@voretaq7 Sometimes the corpses are more fun to abuse once they've been aged a bit...

@freiheit /TedBundy

10:32 PM
@Wesley Thats also the kind of question that shoots to the top of the multicollider

@Wesley /AlBundy
We all know that feeling

@voretaq7 /KellyBundy

I don't think - rated questions get to the collider though

@MarkHenderson Just to twitter?

@freiheit Sorry, no tasteful images of her on the internet.
Have that one as a consolation prize

10:35 PM
Guy is definitely in over his head

Q: Manage multiple hardware and OS

JamexcbI'm new at windows management, before I've worked only with Apple Macs. Now I am at a company that has almost 100 computers with different boards, brands, different hard drives, etc.. in different locations, it's a nightmare! Right now the company have also different domains. I want to unify e...

@MarkHenderson Apple Macs? Really? Did he just say that?
That's second only to the crime of calling them MACS.

@voretaq7 It's ridiculously difficult to find one of her making a "derp" type face or something else goofy, even though she did that a lot in the show...

I have a network of MAC PCs

@freiheit Most of the people making screencaps of her during the show weren't looking at her face.

@voretaq7 Just google imaged it. Clearly not.

10:37 PM
@voretaq7 MEN! harumph

@MarkHenderson Why are you grave digging?

@Zoredache Not quite, just showing how useless the guy that posted his AD question is

OK, off to dinner. LaterZ

"What is your machine's MAC address?"
"I have a PC."

10:41 PM
Microsoft's official Twitter accounts for a number of products are starting to interact directly with me and I feel dirty.
Last week it was the Hyper-V Twitter account.
This week:
@Nonapeptide LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!!!
I should reply back: "It went. I came."
"What's your machine's MAC address?"
"1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014"

@Wesley More like "LET'S GOOOooooo....... ok let me take a breath, gee you got any more RAM in this place?"

Hello, Yes I'm sure I put in the correct e-mail address since I replied to one of the e-mails she sent me. I've copied the error message into the body of this e-mail. [...] The messages are still bouncing back.

@freiheit Geezus
Did they think that her name was "Nore Ply?"

@MarkHenderson N. O'Reply
2

@freiheit For good true and proper mail handling noreply should deliverable and aliased to /dev/null, but that doesn't mean you're supposed to send mail there (or that the student isn't a fool.

10:46 PM
@MarkHenderson I prefer not to speculate what users are thinking. Down that road lies madness.
2

Okay, late afternoon slump.
It's time for arm day.
#GETRIPPPPPPPED

@Wesley With silk road shut down you might just have to work for that the old fashioned way

@freiheit It's just as ridiculous to assume that they're actually thinking instead of marching down the well-worn pathways of their prior assumptions.

@84104 No.... 550 5.1.1 What part of "don't reply to this email" didn't you understand, dumbass?

@MarkHenderson I had to look that up. Couldn't understand why you guys were so talkative about an HR SaaS company shutting down.

10:51 PM
@Magellan I'm thinking that they simply aren't aware that the email in question was a notification from moodle, that moodle expects users to log into moodle to deal with things, and that they thought they could just reply like any other email...
@Magellan The really funny part to me is that this got escalated from the help desk to the mail admins without the helpdesk catching that it was *noreply*@ that was failing

@freiheit I'm not surprised. I've supervised help desk staff.

@Magellan Haha well I've never used their services but I've heard of them

Oh, there are already two other replacements for Silk Road up.
> Black Market Reloaded, located at 5onwnspjvuk7cwvk.onion (link works using the Tor browser only) is currently the main alternative, with Sheep Market at sheep5u64fi457aw.onion coming up as a close second.

sigh Hate it when I spend 5 minutes researching a reported superblock error in a partition only to realize that it's 'mount' being a putz again and I misspelled 'defaults' in my /etc/fstab

@MichaelHampton Just goes to show though, even with technical anonymity people can still figure out who you are

10:54 PM
@MarkHenderson He was a dumbass and let his personal info leak.
What's silly is that it took two years to find him. His email has been publicly available since the site launched. Which, of course, is how he got caught. After a subpoena to Google, of course.

@MichaelHampton It's easier said than done to not leak

@MichaelHampton Ya know, I'm getting really sick of this whole "Global War on Anything the US Gov't Doesn't Like" business.

@MichaelHampton All sending addresses should be able to receive mail, what they choose to do with it is their own business.

@MichaelHampton I wouldn't be surprised if the feds were so up their own ass they didn't know/care

@Magellan Yeah, so am I. But if you plan to do anything about it, be extremely careful.

10:57 PM
@MichaelHampton fsckin' A, right. No electrons involved for any of it.

@Magellan Haha, no, just don't make stupid mistakes like promoting the site in its early days with an account that has your personal email address on it.

@MichaelHampton I'm fairly sure that NSA does have TOR penetrated.

Some other mistakes he made were... logging into his servers via a VPN service provider
@Magellan I'm fairly sure they don't, but I'm always willing to look for evidence either way.

@MichaelHampton sheep looks a bit empty; black market reloaded isn't working for me

@MarkHenderson Might be overwhelmed with traffic...for obvious reasons.

11:01 PM
@MichaelHampton indeed

@Magellan Nono.. FBI
> If the adversary controls an AS [an ISP] or has access to Internet exchange point (IXP) traffic, things are even worse. [...] “some users experience over 95 percent chance of compromise within three months against a single AS or IXP.”

did you guys see the question the silk road guy asked?
90
Q: How can I connect to a Tor hidden service using curl in php?

frostyI'm trying to connect to a tor hidden service using the following php: $url = 'http://jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion/' $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_PROXY, "http://127.0.0.1:9050/"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLO...

@Tanner Only a dozen times :)
@freiheit I've been advising Tor users for nearly a decade to avoid using it twice from the same location whenever their use of it being discovered may put their life in jeopardy.

Thanks for the answer. So is just for the login? The printes only can use LDAP. And if i have to replace a machine the time to configure a domain in a single user pc is the same to create an account. So were do i inprove my time? Thanks — Jamexcb 21 mins ago

11:17 PM
And shit, I've actually answered a couple of Tor questions. I MIGHT BE NEXT!

Hello @MichaelHampton and @MarkHenderson, what's up?

I wonder how you can sneak out of the U.S......

11:20 PM
@Tanner Wait; THAT is the guy that runs Silk Road?

@MarkHenderson Yes, that's apparently him.

@MichaelHampton Hah shit

I think the best way would be via a vessel

Technical mastermind.

jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx is the tor mailer, isn't it?
I didn't put two and two together

11:21 PM
@MarkHenderson I think it's the hidden wiki

I did wonder why that question shot to the top of the collider

Because it got linked to from about 3,000 sites...

Uhm, should I buy the Nexus 4 or the Moto X?

Funny, the Silk Road Forums are still up.

Thing is, I got robbed yesterday and they stole my good ol' Blackberry Torch

11:25 PM
@MichaelHampton there's places.

@superpatosainz I won't touch the Moto X, since you apparently can't turn off the microphone.

@MichaelHampton Holy shit; look at the view count on that question go through the roof

According to www1.icsi.berkeley.edu/%7Enweaver/UlbrichtCriminalComplaint.pdf he tried to get a hitman to take out a Silk Road user

Not getting anywhere near the Moto X. Ever.

@superpatosainz By the time you're aware that you need to worry about your privacy, it may be too late.

Right. But I don't see myself in any Breaking Bad-esque situation in the foreseeable future.

11:33 PM
Hot damn. 9:30am interview tomorrow. Just like that. I like these guys.

@Magellan very good... phone or in-person?

@ewwhite in-person.

Oooh... did you have phone already?

@ewwhite talked with the recruiter. manager agreed to go straight to in-person since I already have things that are into the final phase.

best o' luck.
Very good.

11:39 PM
If I hit this one out of the park, I might be working by the week after next.

Morning interviews are tricky... but you know what to do.

@ewwhite Thanks. Permanent position straight-up too. Very excited.

what type of role is it?

policypak seem really cool!
Have you guys tried that?

@ewwhite mix of admins/systems engineering and support for SaaS customers in APAC. It's swing shift, which will work well for my schedule come this Spring.

11:42 PM
@Magellan DO you know if it's a team interview or one-on-one?

@ewwhite Not really. It's only 1 hour though, so less likely to be a team.

Well, best o' luck... I have 5 tomorrow.

@ewwhite 5 different ones, or a 5 hour loop?

@Magellan Oh wow. We almost never have interviews last an hour and that's with the team. We usually do several shorter ones, though.

toughest one I ever did was an 8 hour loop at Amazon years ago.
@ScottPack I'm used to the 3-5 hour loop thing with piles of 1 hour interviews. Earlier this month I did a 5-6 interview loop that ran about 3.5 hours. That one was actually really tough because it was constant questions before being handed off to another person.

11:45 PM
@Magellan What do you mean by loop?

I think that's where the company is so disorganized that they can't get everyone who wants to interview you together at the same time, so you have to interview with them all separately, in sequence.

Sounds awful.
I just let the logistics person who does the scheduling put things on my calendar. Then I show up.

Oh now THIS is fucking bullshit. Adobe upgraded the other day and now you have to pay $20/year to fill out forms that people send you.
Nor can you export anymore.
I'm actually required to fill out PDFs to file my unemployment.

@Wesley , lol my factory is the factory of Wesley.pt. Please fell free to delete my Question "-8" people think that i am a MS hater. — Jamexcb 19 mins ago
