Dan
11:01 AM
So, I recently discovered Breaking Bad
It's amazing

it's... not bad

Dan
@FalconMomot You're watching it wrong

So this is why a number of staff haven't turned up: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-24361806

Dan
@tombull89 Whoops, he's made a mess of that

Just a bit.

11:04 AM
@tombull89 A lorry crashed on the carriageway? how much more British can it be?

Dan
@FalconMomot I know right, a British news site using the English langauge.

heh.
tell me that event could happen anywhere outside of the UK :P

Dan
@tombull89 Did I tell you about the time I stopped to recover two cute girls from their car which they'd parked on it's side in Lane 1 of the M6? Me and a trucker had just got the scene secured and the door open and propped and the girls were now standing in the car.

As we started helping the driver out, we were feeling pretty heroic when another car pulls up and out steps a real life incarnation of Ace Rimmer. He opens his back door, pulls on a Fleece and when he turns round it's got, in huge print, "DOCTOR - AIR AMBULANCE".

@Dan I thought you meant the side of the lane, not the side of the car :P
Still, LIKE A BAWWWWSSSS.

Dan
@tombull89 No, they'd rolled it a couple of times. It was a 306 and held up extremely well though - lots of broken glass and shit everywhere, but no cabin intrusion. Rest of the car, was of course, fucked.

11:10 AM
wow, lucky
the one time I witnessed a rollover, the occupant died.

Dan
No idea how they did it - they claimed that they thought they'd been nudged but Police weren't that interested. No witnesses, they weren't 100% sure and no CCTV etc so I guess no place to go with that
@FalconMomot Grim :(

@Dan Car's don't do a barrell roll by themselves...

@Dan I'm mildly amazed that CCTV even enters your mind when talking about traffic accidents.
@tombull89 usually you strike a curb, or turn overly sharply, or go off the road, or something

Dan
@FalconMomot We have a lot of cameras for monitoring traffic flow on motorways.

@Dan we also, though they would be utterly useless for forensics, and they're only really at intersections

Dan
11:13 AM
@tombull89 They don't, but they do go fairly easily in the right circumstances. I suspect they lost control for some reason and yanked too harshly to correct at high speeds. Once you're sideways at 60+ it's probably going to go
@FalconMomot Well, it's not really forensics as such to establish if an accident is a single vehicle crash or not.

this is one reason I insist upon vehicles that are very low to the ground
@Dan oh. yeah, ours wouldn't be able to detect a lane incursion... they're really only good for seeing whether there is traffic.

Dan
@FalconMomot Yeah, SUV's and the like are pretty bad though I suppose it'll only take you so far. My favourite crashes are seeing people in BMWs (It's normally a BMW) facing the wrong way, unscathed, chatting to a Police Traffic Officer.
@FalconMomot Oh, that is bad I guess

@Dan I actually prefer it that way

On my way in I drove past a 4x4 facing the wrong way with the front smashed in parked on the side of the road...guess someone had a bad morning.

@Dan if I drove an SUV I'd almost certainly be dead right now.
I have had all kinds of involuntary offroading adventures in things like my old acura integra

Dan
11:16 AM
@FalconMomot Maybe you should drive better!

Dan
Honda, yeah?

Speaking of cars, I have the joy of replacing a headlight bulb holder this evening. It seems to have melted on one side :/

@Dan one was the result of a lorry intruding into my lane on an icy highway at night... another was the result of someone staying immediately abreast of me while I was trying to merge and not budging, forcing me off the road

Dan
@tombull89 Nice! I hate doing anything like that because you just know on modern cars that it's going to be fiddly plastic shite that'll no doubt snap at some point.
@FalconMomot First one I'll give you, second one requires more anticipation ;)

11:19 AM
@Dan It's a bit wierd...sidelight comes on find. Turn both main lights on and nothing happens but the full beam light comes on on the dash.

@Dan the guy literally managed to stick with me through several variations in speed from the moment the merge started until the lane ended in a barrier. I had to deliberately go into the ditch to avoid hitting a concrete berm at about 80.

I've had someone undertake me while merging, that was interesting.

one also doesn't stop in merge lanes, as the normal consequence of that here is that someone rear-ends you at high speed, and you get charged.

Dan
@tombull89 The lights on the dash won't be directly related to the real lights, so I guess that explains it to a degree. Whatever melted will probably have been caused by a short so you may have some fuses out though
@FalconMomot Do what? That's insane - it's almost impossible to be blamed as the front car in a rearwards collision here

@Dan Ah, didn't think about the fuses. I'll check those too.

11:21 AM
@Dan this is the one case. stopping in a merge lane is highly illegal.

Dan
@FalconMomot Strange rules

not in the slightest

Dan
I mean, you shouldn't here - but if it's stopping vs crashing

oddly you don't see a lot of crashes from that.

Dan
@FalconMomot Of course it is - drivers behind should be not driving into yo ubecause you stop. Cars stop unexpectedly all the time for a million reasons

11:22 AM
usually there is a shoulder you could drive onto if required. it's quite uncommon for them to end in a solid wall.
but nonetheless, merging is special.
stopping in a merge lane is I think the UK equivalent of slamming on your brakes abruptly in the inside lane of a roundabout, except worse.

Dan
Jesus, really, and that's the taught practice? Over here you should be matching your speed and traffic flow to merge. The cars on the main highway always have priority, though they SHOULD be leaving room too.

Either way, ultimately, a merge is a "Give Way" over here and if there's no room you stop. You never go onto the shoulder
@FalconMomot Yeah, but even so unless you were found to do be doing to deliberately cause a crash, the car behind would still be at fault

@Dan oh, no, it's not a give way here at all in the slightest. you're not to give way under any circumstance.

Dan
@FalconMomot So who has priority? You on the merge, or the people already on the main road?

the merging traffic, though if you hit someone in that case it's deemed equal fault most of the time.

Dan
Weird

11:25 AM
what you're supposed to do is go into the lane people aren't merging into if you're on the road being merged into.
and not overtake people while they are abreast of you in the merge lane.

Dan
Maybe your road designs are different to ours, but I never have an issue merging - even when people do insist on being in the way
@FalconMomot Yeah, that's vaguely encouraged here but barely anybody does

that particular merge I think was not up to standards...

Dan
@FalconMomot Possibly not - we have a few roads like that. You wonder who signs this stuff off sometimes

but, it worked out well enough in the end. I ended up in the ditch, got winched out, and was on my way.

Dan
@FalconMomot You must have a different success criteria to me :D Mind you, I'm probably due a crash - I've been doing at least 30,000 miles (48,000 km) a year for a few years. I expect my luck to run out at some point

11:27 AM
I drove away from the semi hitting me too (with a massive dent in the rear quarter panel), but I was within inches of being wrapped around an electrical pole.

Dan
@FalconMomot Yeah, street furniture will fuck you up :(

the semi driver told the cop I was trying to race him. I kid you not.
and then his company called me twice to try and intimidate me into paying them damages.
there are some pretty screwed up people in the world...

Dan
@FalconMomot haha, I hate that sort of shit. In a way our insurance companies are to blame over here because being at-fault is really really bad for you. But all it does is encourage people to lie all of the time. My friend had someone turn into him - literally, he was driving in a straight line and they just hit his rear door. They argued it and argued it right up until his lawyer passed over the recording he'd made of the driver admitting to messing with her Sat Nav

@Dan yeah, because if you're deemed at fault, they like to triple your rate
it's actually become highly regulated here though, which is a good thing since the government requires you have it (not driving is really not a viable option for about 90% of people who live here)

Dan
I was hit by a stolen car* years ago and that went down as "at-fault", too.

*It wasn't stolen, but they had no insurance and gave false details at the scene and then the owner (Whoever that may be) lied about the car "going missing". I don't believe a word of it because, initially, they tried to cover their tracks by buying insurance the day after but ho hum

11:32 AM
what a mess

Dan
@FalconMomot It was crap - the police took weeks to do anything and after months and months I was asked to provide an accurate description of the occupants to allow them to proceed. I couldn't and that was that
Right, to the shops

@Dan ack. of course not. what did they expect?
good day
I should go to bed, myself.
actually, I think the gym opened half an hour ago... maybe I'll do that and then go to bed.

11:49 AM
sup

it's so cold in here I have two sweatshirts on...a pullover and a zipper one
I pulled a CD key off a server that is being retired since it's all corrupted ...and now Windows complains it's invalid on the new server -_-
I can't get past the key screen :(

Dan
Did you definitely get the key and not the product code? And is it a MAK key? If so you'l need the volume license version of Windows

12:04 PM
I found a different key off a different server that worked
Weird since I used the same volume license disc on this other server and the key was different.... shrugs

Dan
I'd suggest one of them wasn't a VL key

yeah...maybe there was another disc or something
oh well, got it working now! :P

Dan
12:17 PM
The poor PM here is on the phone to a very hard of thinking HP help desk person

I have had lunch with my husband and am now in a slightly less grumpy mood.
2

Dan
Aw, I'd love to be able to do that
Not lunch with your husband, though I'm sure that would be lovely too

@Dan There you go, spoiling my "take it all too literally" :-)
but if you ever are in Stockholm, I'm sure he'd be happy to have lunch with you - I know I would

Dan
Aw :) Careful, I may well take you up on that as I'd love a trip out there

@Dan Stockholm is a nice city, well worth a visit. We don't actually live in the city; we're in a small town, just slightly too far out to be called a suburb, close to the Arlanda airport. But we both work in the city.

12:31 PM
Yeah, Stockholm is a pretty good city.. nice and clean, good air

Dan
I will definitely bear it in mind - want to travel more and we need to see more Europe and Scandinavia etc

Come to Oslo

Dan
That's relatively close to Stockholm isn't it? Road trip!

12:48 PM
@Dan Everything's relative - it's a little over 300 kms, but the road isn't that good all the way

Dan
@JennyD Google maps reckons ~500km / 300miles

@Dan Right, I converted it to miles to make it easier for you and then wrote kms anyway :-)

Dan
:D

I've driven that way and quite long stretches through the last part of Sweden are limited to 70 or 90 kms.

Dan
Pretty doable - but that speed limit would grate

12:53 PM
I think my car would be the limiting factor...I think it would complain anything over 80mph

@JennyD that would still be quicker than the 300 mile journey we did a couple of weeks ago - took us 9 hours due to various motorways being closed and the resulting chaos

@Iain Urgh

very

Here we measure distance by time ...it's kinda funny. "Oh, it's 2 hours away."

the 300 mile journey should have been 5 hours away

Dan
12:55 PM
@Iain Brutal - took us that long to get to Newquay once because some guy was threatening to jump off a bridge. He did in the end

@NathanC For the ~50km radius around Stockholm, that would vary greatly with the time of day

ah...yeah, maine doesn't have as much of a traffic issue
except in the downtown "metro" areas of portland where people can't drive or learn how to merge

@Dan it took us 4 hours to get out of Cheshire then we got stuck on the M5 between 4/4a and then later round Bristol

I was stuck in traffic yesterday because some guy broke down in the middle of the road rather than pulling off to the side. Even if you stall out there should be time to get out of the way...

Dan
@Iain That's the problem isn't it - motorways are great but if something goes wrong, it goes really really wrong

12:57 PM
A few weeks ago I saw a guy drift into traffic when it was obvious the car was disabled

@MathiasR.Jessen commented...looks good to me

Dan
@NathanC Not always - I'm afraid I did that once on a very busy stretch. It kind of set on fire and as the fuel tank was where the fire was, priority was to abandon ship!

@Dan There was also a cop sitting in the median ~100 feet away from the "disabled" vehicle and didn't move
lol
but yet it was slowing traffic to a one-lane on a busy merge point

@Dan We neglected to check before we left otherwise we could have taken A41/442 or even A483/A5/A49 to get us to Worcester in less than 3 hours

Dan
@Iain Gutting :( I'm 50-50 on abandoning my car and getting a touring bike for work
The cars fine most of the time, but on the days it isn't I'd give anything to be on my bike at the time! Managed an emergency pre-wedding journey in like 50 minutes which would have taken hours and hours due to an accident. Motorway had been reopened but I spent around 30 minutes filtering past near stationary traffic

A: slow website load and high memory usage

mojtaba zavarit's usually .htaccess file that re-injecting a changed request URI , check that out and also you can reset your config files

@TheCleaner Thanks :-) The last suggestion is the most "correct" in terms of segregating priviliges on the receive connectors, I've grown paranoid of open relay connectors :P

1:35 PM
yep
heh, I think this is the first time I've "stolen" an accept. serverfault.com/questions/543255/… - I was typing my answer when another was accepted. I cut it short and simply posted it figuring the OP was done with the Q...only to see 15 seconds that he retracted the other accept and accepted mine. There should be a "thief" badge or something. :)

@TheCleaner a "Yoink!" badge?

@tombull89 once again, I'm forced to turn to urbandictionary. But yep...spot on.

Dan
I love software bugs, from a hotfix:

'Attempts by target devices to download the bootstrap file from the server can fail. The issue occurs if the bootstrap file is located in a folder with a four-letter name where the final character is uppercase.'

How does that even mess up something O.o

Q: Server stack after type reboot command

Rafał KamińskiI have Debian Wheezy installation with Xen in Kernel. All is fine but ... when i type reboot command or shoutdown -r now, my server is stack and i see only that info on screen: INFO: task reboot:15065 blocked for more than 120 seconds I tried to change kernel from wheezy to kernel from backport...

"My server is stack!!! halp!!!"

1:50 PM
@tombull89 Weird. Two upvotes now. I can't even parse that into English.

@NathanC no pity edit? :)
and that question is 1,000 times better than this one

Q: Portfast on a truck port on a Cisco 3750

RichardGood morning everyone! Some history, we have mixed environment of Dell Powerconnect 6248 switches and Cisco 3750 switches and a Cisco 6500 core for our Head office. WTF is with people this morning?

Beep Beep! Truck port coming through!

1:57 PM
I figured it was a typo too... Nope, he repeats it in the question

:) - Maybe there should be a message generated like: "Your very first question on the first day you were here has been downvoted and migrated. Perhaps you should have read the informative Help section of the site? Oh wait, this is YOUR world. So sorry. You let us know if we can get you a drink, Captain You Planet."

I hate DR

sup brotatos

I assume you mean DR Planning and Documentation... Everyone hates that

I saw a friend in the UK saying that since our gov't is shut down, they should take back the colonies. :(

Good morning Mark

@MDMarra po-tae-toes? Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew?

@tombull89 basically

@MDMarra Did you remind them that our civilians have more guns than their entire army?

No
Although, I am curious how UK history books teach the American revolution

I think it's a fairly minor blip in their relatively long line of colonization -> empire -> revolutions -> weird quazi-colony model.

Dan
2:08 PM
@ChrisS This - it's barely mentioned beyond "This happened"

@ChrisS I can't imagine why doing something that is almost immediately outdated, sits on a shelf collecting dust, and requires factoring in so many variables that it is close to impossible to follow in a real DR situation would be despised.

@Dan Here, it's like 1/4 of most elementary text books

Dan
@MDMarra Too late - we don't want you any more. Not until you sort yourself out - it's kind of like lending your brand new Ferrari to a drug dealer. After a while it's best if they just keep it

haha

@MDMarra Which is really a shame, as there's a lot more US History than the few years we were at war with England.

2:10 PM
@ChrisS BUT THE BOSTON TEA PARTY

Dan
That's because you're a young country in US terms, I guess. That and I imagine you guys are quite proud of winning*

*After we got bored and went home

"Washington (CNN) -- In an extended shutdown, most of the federal workforce would go without pay, but the checks will keep coming to the 533 current members of Congress."

@MDMarra youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtMwmepBjTSG593eG7ObzO7s <-- The Boston Tea Party didn't even get it's own episode... It's lumped in with Smuggling

Your goverment system is beautiful

@pauska Congress cannot have their pay altered by members of the current session
Since congress controls their own pay, its meant to keep them from giving themselves raises

Dan
2:11 PM
@pauska Should we tell them how the rest of the world is laughing at them?

pay altered? Aren't we talking about a budget stop?

consequently, it keeps them from having their pay reduced too.

@Dan They don't know that there are people outside US.. except mexicans and canadians

Don't worry guys. This happened in the West Wing. It worked out for the best then.

2:12 PM
@pauska They've already been paid... It doesn't come out of the next budget (which is where the standard employees are right now)
@Dan I really don't think any level of embarrassment could change the hatred I have for our Congressional system and members.

Dan
@ChrisS To be fair, I was being a little mean. All of our political systems have pretty major issues - but the US is pretty unique in the way it can get shut down like this

I was told by a buddy of mine that works for the Fed that supposedly they are talking about retro-paying the employees that are furloughed currently. Which sounds a lot like a paid vacation to me.

The one thing that stomps me is a two-party political system in such a large and powerful nation

@TheCleaner Won't happen

@Dan The shortsighted idiots on the hill make budgeting laws that only extend a very short amount of time, then shutdown.. It's not that the system disallows them to make long term plans, they choose not to.

2:16 PM
My cousin is a civilian DoD employee and was furloughed this summer for 6 days with promise of retro pay
never happened

Yeah, that wont happen

@TheCleaner doing tape restores at a site in Philly

My local senator was on the news last night talking about his pay and all sorts of crap. He explained that they can't change their pay, but that congressional members could give it back, or give it to charity. When asked if he would give his pay during the shutdown to charity he said "no". And that was the end of that.

I hate Solaris

2:19 PM
@Cole Fun...those tend to go "yep..not on that tape...grrr nothing on that one...hey here's something...oh wait backup corrupt."

A senator from MN is proposing a bill that will halt all congressional pay for future shutdowns

@TheCleaner we're usually pretty good since we...have so many tapes

It can't affect this session though, because of the 27th amendment and all

And all we do is tape backup. No D2D or s2s replication.

@MDMarra Would you vote to not pay yourself when you don't do your job? When you currently get paid even if you don't show up...

2:21 PM
In fairness, a lot of these guys probably won't be in office if they keep this up by the time that bill kicks in

Dan
@ChrisS It's incredible how many people have an absolute "Fuck you, got mine" attitude. Even moreso when these people have the power to change it, but simply fail to give the slightest of shits about other people

@Cole That's how I do backups at home. =]
@Dan I saw an interesting Ted Talk the other day about that.. How people, especially when they aren't aware of the victims typically act in a "selfish" way. Though it doesn't explain all behavior, and "emotions" tend to explain most of the non-selfish decisions.

@MDMarra so they'll go back to practicing law or do speaking engagements. Oh noes!

@TheCleaner It's not exactly all roses for the politically disgraced. Our former governor, who was relatively well liked while in office (but has since been particularly hated for someone no longer in office) got a gig teaching for U of California... After one class, "no longer teaching"... Al Gore picked her up for his Left Wing TV Channel... She then "left" a year later and hasn't done anything interesting since.

@ChrisS Sounds like someone who doesn't get out of the cities much.
Mornin' gents.

2:37 PM
money.cnn.com/2013/10/01/news/economy/obamacare-exchanges/… and suddenly, a thousand servers cried out in agony

@ChrisS sure...but I'm sure if you make it to be a governor of a state, while the salary isn't crazy awesome, you were pretty influential and in influential circles to begin with. So I'm sure they'll get by just fine. Or write a tell all book and make some spending cash.

true

@NathanC "We'll be speeding things up in the next few hours to handle all this demand," President Obama said Tuesday afternoon. -- really? Doesn't he have better things to do than be PR for the IT dept?

@MDMarra probably a variation on snopes.com/politics/soapbox/revocation.asp

2:41 PM
Washington state's exchange is at wahbexchange.org. They didn't register the .com, so somebody bought it and spoofed it. :) (It's down now)

@MichaelHampton wat?

@MichaelHampton So they ...wat?
lol
I can't tell if they are saying the mobile device is sending inbound traffic to the relay server destined for their server, or if they want the mobile device to follow the same outbound path/VPN as their NAT'd server does. The question needs a drawing...and even then it might be lost in translation.

Maine uses the federal exchange which completely screwed up
failed to verify my email so it tossed all the info I put in....since I have insurance through the company it wasn't worth going through it again
(I just wanted to see what the rates were)

@pauska learning SCOM today, any protips?

@MDMarra I never started.. Just don't install a ton of management packs.. start with the built ins and make sure you have those configured like you want, and then do one pack at a time

@MDMarra oh btw - it OM OM NOMS memory.. the database is huge

@MDMarra I will add to pauska that I really like this add-on savision.com/products/live-maps-system-center when I was using SCOM. SCOM itself was a PITA to figure out on my own though. But it can monitor a Windows/Exchange/SQL environment like nothing else.

@Iain You can keep your mispronunciation of Aluminum if you'd just renumber streets with a sensible numbering scheme.

@ChrisS Which bit don't you understand ?

Dan
@ChrisS In the war we used to turn street signs around or remove them altogether to confuse any German spies. Our current scheme is similar, but to keep Americans out.

2:50 PM
@Iain Address 50 should be roughly across the street from 51.

Dan
@ChrisS It is in most places, I'd say

@ChrisS it mostly is

@TheCleaner OY! I've been looking for a product like that
SCOM really lacks this part.. big screen status maps etc

Similarly, if I'm at address 50 on Street X, I should be able to go one street over, perpendicularly, and still by at address 50 now on Street Y.

although here we're in 46 and we have 93 opposite but that's because they have a cul-de-sac on their side that is also part of the street

2:52 PM
@pauska it was about the best I found. I did find some other dashboard type product but never liked it as much as Live Maps.

@Iain Yeah, case and point.

Dan
@ChrisS Well, we don't have blocks so no.

@ChrisS we don't generally build on a gridiron system - villages and hamlets etc just grew organically
and our modern town planners are obsessed with curvey roads and cul-de-sacs

@Iain That too - Stop that!

Dan
@ChrisS Curved roads are nice

2:56 PM
@Dan Visually pleasing, yes. Navigable, no
At least you've got the roundabout... I'd be heavily in favor of stealing more of those if Americans could figure out how to drive through them.

Dan
@ChrisS It's not difficult if you're not stupid, Chris! Seriously.

@Dan Sorry, I can't take any part of this conversation seriously. It started with a letter from Her Majesty revoking US Independence....

Dan
@ChrisS Do curvy roads really make it that hard to navigate?

@Dan I don't really know, it just sounded good at the time. I've got GPS, it tells me where to turn.

I rather like the Canadian notion of government shutdown due to lack of budget == mass sack of representatives.

Dan
2:59 PM
@ChrisS GPS is the best - I dont' miss attempting to road navigate by maps at all

@ScottPack Really?

@ChrisS Sure. As it stands our representatives have no motivation to do anything except attempt to screw the "other guy".
@ChrisS Without consequences the only think keeping people in line are ethics or morals. Politicians don't reach that level with them.

I suppose so

Looks like we'll have to take that beer in Houston instead of Las Vegas..

"Destination Ahead"
"Um, that's the river."
"Destination. Ahead."
"I'm NOT driving into the river"
"DESTINATION! AHEAD!"

3:02 PM
At least it's not sending you off a highway overpass

Dan
No way - I know his work was hardly ground breaking, but still

Poor guy :(

@pauska Beer's on me! :)
@MDMarra That was a great question, I enjoyed researching it!

@ChrisS "Quick, we're getting shut down. Put the rover in autonomous mode so it can actually DO shit."

3:08 PM
@voretaq7 What's really sad is that they can't even DONATE their time. It's a felony to do so.

"meanwhile on Mars..." <cut to scene of the rover playing cards with little green men>

@RyanRies Too bad it's not easily answerable!
Glad it was at least entertaining :)

@Jacob "That would encourage coercion."

@voretaq7 huh

I always feel ugly calling commandline .exes from powershell

Dan
3:09 PM
Damn, I'm having one of those horrid issues that I just know is going to come down to something very silly

Well you can get the data in Powershell, you just need to format it yourself

@Jacob you'd have the president of the united states telling his executive cheff or secretary or sommat "I know the government is shut down and we can't pay you, but I'd REALLY APPRECIATE IT AS A PERSONAL FAVOR if you stayed on the job for no money"

@MDMarra That's not the reason.

Now while I would have no problem telling POTUS "Yeah, go fuck yourself. Call me when Congress understands I don't work for free!" some people might feel pressured to show up under those circumstances.

@RyanRies yeah in the meantime I was calling repadmin from inside of PS

3:12 PM
ForEach($Site In (Get-ADObject -Filter 'objectClass -eq "site"' -Searchbase (Get-ADRootDSE).ConfigurationNamingContext))
{
Get-ADObject "CN=NTDS Site Settings,$($Site.DistinguishedName)" -Properties Options
}
^ Site options for every site
Just gotta translate the bitmask yourself :)

yeah I was trying to pull options from the site itself, not the NTDs object
Dummy mistake
Basically, if I'm writing this for a health check I can see if it's 1 or 5 and if it's anything else, it's weird
Can you think of any other options besides 1 (use_notify) and 5 (use_notify, no_compression) that would be considered "normal"?
wait, that would be on site links, not sites
I need a day off

No I would consider <not set> to be the most normal of all :)
on sites

or +strict
whatever that translates to

Dan
TFTP is UDP, right?

@Dan I believe so
been a long ass time since I used it though

3:20 PM
I feel dirty installing server 2k3

@Dan Yeah

Dan
Cheers both
@NathanC As you should

D:

@Dan 69 UDP

Dan
So why isn't working ragequit

3:21 PM
Though It's implementation specific, technically

@Dan Because TFTP sucks.
2

Dan
@Tanner I'll grant you that, but it's simple and, uh, reliable

@Dan FIREWALL

@Dan The T stands for "Twitchy"

@ChrisS orthogonally is the word you're looking for there.

Dan
3:26 PM
@MikeyB All off, unless there's an ACL I guess. I do haev something claiming to be a TFTP client but I can't say I'm convinced. Service is definitely running, something is listening on 69

@MDMarra I'm pretty sure we can find the defs for these flags in the windows header files somewhere

@ChrisS That only works if your roads are TRULY parallel (we have a pair of streets in Kitchener-Waterloo (King & Weber) that both run north-ish/south-ish and cross 4 or 5 times), base your street addresses off latitude/longitude and only switch from Brazzers St. North to Brazzers St. South at the equator.
@Dan Do you happen to be on ubuntu? The default packages and wiki instructions are a little fucked. Make sure inetd isn't listening on that port and trying to run your TFTP server.

Dan
@MikeyB Nah, Windows with a proprietary Citrix TFTP server

@MikeyB I haven't studied math in years now - I'm starting to lose it

@Dan Well shit you're screwzzled buddy

3:29 PM
@NathanC dirty isn't installing server 2003 today. Dirty is installing Exchange 2003 today.

Dan
@MikeyB You think I don't know that, asshole!

@Dan Sorry, I forgot to laugh. HAHAHAHAHAHA!
@Dan Have you tried turning it off and on again?

@MikeyB Yeah yeah... complicated... The whole conversation was half in jest.

Dan
@MikeyB Yes :(

@Dan or installing Ubuntu in a VM?

Dan
3:31 PM
@MikeyB Uh, no, that ain't gonna fly!

@ChrisS I do appreciate the idea. But in practice, ... good luck.
There are some theories that the road designers for our area were on LSD or similar substances when they laid out the roads.

@MikeyB ... /throws away coffee

But the truth is boring.

@MikeyB But the LSD web is surprisingly normal.

@MikeyB A lot of cities here have one-ways on every street...if you wanted to change direction you'd have to go 4-5 blocks to find a road you could go on
google maps occasionally wants me to turn onto a one-way...
(going the wrong way, of course)

3:34 PM
@NathanC Do you fix it?

Dan
Right, Wireshark it is

@Dan What specifically isn't working? can't get a connection? Can't download/upload files?

@MikeyB Nah...it's not like I can stop and go "oh, this turn's wrong!" when i'm at a busy intersection

Dan
@MikeyB Zilch - just get a timeout

3:35 PM
I just go the proper way and it reroutes...and it's a faster route

@NathanC You mean you don't whip out your laptop/tablet and submit a correction right then and there?

hahahno
Then you have people who end up on an airport runway because they don't read signs

Dan
@NathanC While there's no doubting the silliness - I'm surprised there's a commercial airport like that that allows people anywhere near a runway

@Dan That's why I hate TFTP; Wireshark always comes with it...

does this edit make sense serverfault.com/posts/270009/revisions?

3:39 PM
@Iain Yes, that makes sense, and it's even accurate! Though I didn't check the RFC he linked to.

Dan
It's right, but I find it a more confusing explanation than what comes before

@Dan Yeah. I mean, it was an "access road" for emergency staff and the like but still.

I found it confusing

Some people learn in different ways.

Dan
@NathanC Even in Britain I think you'd have upset a man with a gun before that point. But maybe not, I shan't be attempting to drive onto the runway at any of our International airports anytime soon

3:40 PM
@Dan I'm surprised the gates are motion activated. My dinky little airport requires RFID badges to open any of the airside gates/doors
@NathanC "emergency staff" can use RFID badges like everyone else. But at most civilized fields the emergency services are on site, and already inside the perimeter fence.

Dan
@voretaq7 To be fair, I could easily get on to our local small airfield but then I could probably steal a plane there and have nobody notice
@NathanC Most crash gates I've seen require opening from inside

@Dan up until 9/11 all the gates at FRG were mechanical locks keyed to the field's zip code.

@voretaq7 Yeah...I've never been to that airport so I'm not sure how something like that even happens. Even our airport is fenced off with gates and locks

@mfinni - I see your answer is quick and lazy in that domain migration question based on the fact that the OP will only drag out your time. Nice call. :)

and compared to many airports it's small
well, for an international airport anyway

3:43 PM
then again this is alaska.
Nothing applies in Alaska. If you read through 14CFR pretty much every section ends with "Except in Alaska"

Dan
Haha

@RyanRies msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc223545.aspx <-- documentation for the nTDSA specific options bitflag - though it's not up to date, the NTDS API header file from the latest SDK (2012 R2) contains another option as well

Dan
I hate installing Wireshark onto production boxes

on linux production?

@Dan I installed it on our DC to troubleshoot connectivity issues with another server once
it was sending RST packets on connection attempts for something ...then, a few hours later it was fixed without any action taken. problem solved?

Dan
3:48 PM
@NathanC Needs must sometimes - I always uninstall it after. Don't really trust have PCAP sat there

yeah, it's either that or port mirroring

Dan
And....instantly I find an oddity

@Dan Don't leave us hanging

Dan
No trace of the TFTP requests from the device I'm booting. DHCP works, but the source is the default gateway even though they're on the same VLAN

@MDMarra 0x1 = use_notify - 0x2 = twoway_sync - 0x4 = no_compression

Dan
3:55 PM
Right, tomorrow! Laters all

@RyanRies @MDMarra If you're willing to define a flag enum for the settings, you can parse out the options in a oneliner:
Add-Type -TypeDefinition @"
    [System.Flags]
    public enum nTDSSiteSettingsFlags {
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_AUTO_TOPOLOGY_DISABLED              = 0x00000001,
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_TOPL_CLEANUP_DISABLED               = 0x00000002,
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_TOPL_MIN_HOPS_DISABLED              = 0x00000004,
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_TOPL_DETECT_STALE_DISABLED          = 0x00000008,
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_INTER_SITE_AUTO_TOPOLOGY_DISABLED   = 0x00000010,
        NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_GROUP_CACHING_ENABLED               = 0x00000020,
Then to parse the options int:
[Enum]::Parse('nTDSSiteSettingsFlags', 1024)
[Enum]::Parse('nTDSSiteSettingsFlags', 1794)
etc.

@jscott That's what I'm talking about. Pro.
