They're also doing things like DSC though
Which is some of SCCM's functionality baked into the OS
@MDMarra Application Virtualization Dynamic Suite Composition Tool
?
Desired State Config in PowerShell 4
aka Puppet for Windows
We have a customer that's about to sign a SOW (hopefully) for SCCM, SCOM, SCAC, SCVMM, and Hyper-V soon
And they want to do hybrid cloud stuff
I think that's the way MS envisions large enterprises going. It'll be interesting to implement.
or.. are they putting on-premises lower on the priority list than hybrid/full cloud?
They've done great work with WS 2012/2012 R2, but why on earth is not not released on MSDN/technet before server vendors get it..
Yeah, we're trying to figure out the same thing
My boss (practice director) said to our Microsoft PTAM the other day "Dude, just give me the 8.1 RTM iso."
haha
We didn't get it :(
The rumor is that the "RTM" wasn't a gold master and they're still releasing fixes
Which is why it isn't available in advance through partner channels like it usually is
that's what they said, that they want to implement last-minute fixes from server vendors before releasing it
but it doesn't make any sense - they could just generate a new ISO for fucks sake, or mandatory push out updates at first boot
13:23
I'm sure they dont want the bad press that would undoubtedly happen when people stumble on those bugs that are getting last minute fixes
8 was so poorly received, they don't want 8.1 buried as "more of the same" before it's even GA.
That's my guess, anyway
the preview has been out for a long time
any bugs should have been picked up there
Right, and it's had its flaws
Oh it totally shouldnt be scheduled for release if there are still bug fixes, I agree
but MS is on some rigid release schedule now. Some devops shit
I just want a stable 8.1 RT
Ok, gotta go become the newest MCSA: Server 2012.
See ya
GL man

1 hour later…
14:58
mornin' gents.
Dude I hate prometric so much
Drive all the way out to the @PrometricIT_edu testing center "Servers are down. No testing" you don't have a way to notify people? It's 2013
Did they cancel you?
Argh
I really cannot express how terrible my dealings with @PrometricIT_edu have been this week. Switch providers, @MSLearning. Please.
That sucks.
Their entire fucking site was down for the bulk of last week
well, not their front page, but the rest was
And then this
15:02
Really? That's just plain incompetence.
Yeah Prometric is pretty low-rent. It's the same down here in DFW too.
And now that Second Shot is back, I have to jump through hoops to have the second shot code applied to the rescheduled exam
room topic changed to The Comms Room: This is *NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // 5 Sept 1977 Voyager 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral. At just 125AU, it is still exploring an unknown area between the solar system and interstellar space. [markdown-ate-my-baby] [pwned-by-a-wild-markdown]*
@RyanRies That's no-rent. I've seen low-rent and that place (job[-3]) still kept their shit working.
15:03
They have to refund me and then charge me again just to apply a voucher code
The CS guy even said "You should have me schedule this for you, rather than relying on the website"
Why can I never get strikethrough to work on Main?
cause markdown is stupid, and you need to use the html tags there
markdown is different between chat and posts on the main site.
Ahhhh thanks guys
It's so nice having my Delete key back.
15:06
That reminds me, I need to finish my 2012 MCSE... though to what end I'm no longer sure... fucking MCM killers. :(
MCSE: SI?
Executives keep telling MS that they want more cloud integration. You'll be seeing more of this, for sure.
@MDMarra Yes
@MDMarra @RyanRies And I've been telling you guys for awhile now, stop expecting actual logic from Microsoft. The politics there are ridiculous and such a substantial percentage of their workforce is on the autism spectrum due to their interviewing process that it's a real mess there.
@MDMarra As soon as I get my new hot lab built out I will install all the System Center toys, then I will do my Private Cloud one too. :)
15:09
:)
I didn't find MCSE:PC that hard
@Magellan Here's hoping whoever replaces Balmer cleans house... cause you're right
@ChrisS Never happen. It'd take 10 years to fire enough people to make it work. They'd have to systematically open offices elsewhere, hire up new teams, and then cut the teams here.
LOTS of very smart but mildly autistic people at that company.
"10 years" don't sound like "never".
What's wrong with autistic people?!
@ChrisS Not a thing, but spending 25 years staffing an entire company based on ability to do certain kinds of brain-teasers is perhaps a bad idea.
The Eastside has one of the largest autism hot-spots in the country. People on the spectrum go to work at MS, work long hours, meet somebody there, get married and have kids. You will statistically end up with quite a few kids that are further down the spectrum that way.
Let's just say that I don't hate Microsoft as a company. They make some really good products. I purely and completely loathe the suburbian attitudes that pervade that entire area.
That was a bit excessive. Perhaps best not to post that. =)
I'm no raging hippie, but I really don't like their politics over there.
@Magellan Um, I think that applies to most people... Not just the people you're bashing.
15:20
@ChrisS Could be I've spent too long in the city itself. Voting for tax increases and bonds is rarely a problem here. What we do not care of is getting huge projects like sports stadiums that we voted down 2-3 times rammed down our throats.
@ChrisS The difference between Bill Gates Sr. and Bill Gates Jr. are stark, and quite emblematic of the difference between Seattle proper and the Eastside suburbs.
Gates Sr.: On the Board of Planned Parenthood.
Gates Jr.: Screaming for more H1B visas with millions of Americans out of work.
@MathiasR.Jessen Please cast a reopen vote then :)
15:55
I wish Microsoft still did the "Notes From the Field" books.
Those were much more entertaining than the usual MS Press stuff.
16:09
Gorram Stupid DNSMasq. time to rip that out and put in a real DHCPd.
@RyanRies Differing opinions on my question!
MS now recommends enabling autorecovery for DFS-R dirty shutdowns on all 2012 roles.
16:26
@MDMarra Yup, they probably got tired of the support calls.
Even though the log tells you exactly what needs to be done and how to do it, I assume the majority of people aren't monitoring for it and aren't aware of the change.
Well
The log tells you to make sure that the data is correct before resuming
no idea how you're actually supposed to do that
I think the odds of an undesired rollback are pretty minimal as long as you have other replication partners that are still functioning and up to date.
16:40
@MDMarra So why, if your goal is to get rid of the server, do you choose the option that requires that the server remain in service?
hello!
I was kicked out of Experts Exchange.
7
Mainly because I didn't pay-up.
I can't imagine paying to be here.
I'd imagine that there is similar enough.
16:56
@RyanRies My goal is to replace Server 2003 DCs with Server 2012 DCs
I don't have an actual requirement to pull the plug out of the 2003 boxes, though it's probably implied
I just feel like multiple IPs on DCs is dirtier than a temporary global forwarder. The Global forwarder forces them to address the issue and is easier to look through the logs to see what hasn't been swapped over
Multiple IPs is a workaround that could easily last the life of the server
@MDMarra Ahh well in that case, I think I projected my own requirements onto you then, because I do have pull-the-plug requirements on a lot of my stuff right now, so that was fresh on my mind.
@ewwhite Welcome back
@RyanRies I mean, it would be nice
@ewwhite Did you lose your paypal login?
@MDMarra I must have
This guy didn't beat around the bush...
On the screen is a useless kernel stack trace. This all been discussed en masse at the hoster's forum... I don't have an IPMI access, because it costs extra money... I am sorry, but your answer is useless for me. — Alexander Farber 45 mins ago
17:21
I'm just amazed at what people are willing to live with. If I rented a server that crashed on a regular basis they'd be fixing it or I'd be finding another provider, quick.
@ChrisS exactly!
And meanwhile, I think about the number of crashes I see every week...
I did bring it up to the people at work... "Hey, we shouldn't have this many crashes..."
I was asked, "Well, Ed... how many crashes should we have?"
@MDMarra I sent Wesley a bike.
3
17:40
"Should" none... Realistically I aim for 4 9s
As do I.
52.5 seconds of downtime per year?
Sorry, 31 seconds
Okay, that's an extreme...
but in terms on unplanned downtime, it's possible to limit it
cluster all the things
availability of services goes way up with virtualized clusters.
17:45
Also I love Wolfram Alpha, because you can just type shit like this into it 1 year - (1 year * .999999)
I've been using it a lot for quick calculations, too
I like for my clients to have something that looks like this:
couple of reboots a year... get patches/updates in... be happy
18:12
@RyanRies 4 9s == ~1 hour downtime per year
@ChrisS Not mathematically it's not... it's about 30 seconds

Q: update libcurl on wamp (windows 32) and on centos (whm apache php)

agaggiI've a php script which uses php curl, the function I'm using has bug on older versions of libcurl and it has been fixed in latest version (7.32.0) of libcurl (http://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/) by checking http://curl.haxx.se/changes.html Now i want to update latest version of libcurl, both in my wa...

I'm out of close votes, but that one needs some gasoline
@pauska Um... wow. Sorry. Not sure where my head was. O_O
@dawud pew pew
@Wesley how you doin' ?
@dawud Just grinding. What's up with you?
18:20
Take a look at this OLD^3 school hardcore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtDaFcyWers
@ChrisS Or maybe you're right... I math gud...
1 year = 8760 hours
1/8760 = 0.000114
100 - 0.000114 = 99.99988

You're right, I'm wrong. Sorry! :)
Hmm... the effect on reliability SLAs due to astronomical fluctuations in the length of year...
@dawud \,,/,
Also I wonder what Wolfram Alpha is calculating when I enter (1 Year - (1 Year * .999999)) ... because it comes up with ~30 seconds for the answer.
8759 / 8760 = 0.99989 so, basically 0.9999
@RyanRies That would be correct, you have 6 9s in that number
That's 99.9999%
18:26
4 => 1 hour
5 => 5 minutes
6 => 30 seconds
@Wesley that's almost 20 years old
@RyanRies Correct. That's 6 nines.
You know who has zero nines? Prometric, those fuckers.
lol
@ChrisS Ohh I'm a retard, I thought you didn't start counting nines until after the decimal!
18:27
High availability is a system design approach and associated service implementation that ensures a prearranged level of operational performance will be met during a contractual measurement period. Users want their systems, for example hospitals, production computers, and the electrical grid to be ready to serve them at all times. Availability refers to the ability of the user community to obtain a service or good, access the system, whether to submit new work, update or alter existing work, or collect the results of previous work. If a user cannot access the system, it is said to be una...

WIKIPEDIA B*TCH! DO YOU READ IT?
Look who's stamping out ignorance in the Comms Room! :)
I can't believe there isn't a Troll Face with that saying already.....
Anybody running a sysadm account under staff_u? how do you specify your sudorules? I've tried writting a custom policy module, but it grows indefinitely and requires too much access for the staff_u user, so I'm rather trying to setup rules in IPA like sudo runcon -u sysadm_u foo. It works just fine, but it looks like too much clutter however.
18:49
I just login as root to all my systems.
Also ----> schneierfacts.com
@ChrisS I can't (and I wouldn't, anyway) grant root access to everybody.
@dawud Sorry, I'm in a smartmass mood... But I don't use FreeIPA, so no idea what you're getting on about
@Wesley This LP ages so well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUICMI1FtZw
@ChrisS no problem at all. I did like the Schenier fact :)
Basically, the problem is that the SELinux user mapping that allows access to SETUID executables (like sudo), the staff_u account, does allow you to run sudo, but if you try to run something that belongs in an elevated domain (system_u), it will fail miserably, hence the runcon workaround.
it is not freeIPA specific, btw. FreeIPA is just the backend for SELinux user mappings and sudorules

No idea what you're talking about =]

Q: Configure postres to delivers faster when a mail got greylisted

rubo77Where do I configure the time postgres waits until it tries to resend an email from the queue if an email was grey-listed on the recipient side? I would like to configure it, so my server tries to resend the email after 2 Minutes if it was greylisted. If the mail is in the queue for another rea...

I'm sick of being out of close votes.
@FalconMomot I popped an unclear what you're asking in it
@Iain Thanks.
> I don't bother with WEP or WPA, I just got Bruce Schneier to autograph my wireless access point.
Just a reminder, if you want serveritsyourfault.com, contact me soon or I'm just going to let it expire.
I be in Seattle!
20:19
@DennisKaarsemaker Welcome! Enjoying the weather?
about the same as in .eu
slightly colder (we had an unexpected heatwave this week)
@ewwhite For being too competent, I take it?
@DennisKaarsemaker What are you up to?
meeting our seattle team and having a good time
@DennisKaarsemaker No windmill configuration climbs? You're missing out.
we've got enough windmills in .nl
we don't have many hills though, so seattle already shocked me
20:24
...whereas we appear to have a shortage of windmill experts in Seattle. And Chicago.
Need to find a good place to do some running
@DennisKaarsemaker Two flat choices: the downtown waterfront north from Pier 69 into Myrtle Edwards Park, and Green Lake. Where are you?
But, I should advise you, running up hills builds character.
spring street, just west off the 5 freeway
@MilesErickson There's always @ewwhite
option one sounds good, not too far away
20:28
@DennisKaarsemaker Right. Well, you'll have an easy time getting down to the waterfront from there, either one block south on Marion or two blocks north on University. The running gets better (fewer tourists) the further north you go.
@DennisKaarsemaker Or, you can get to Green Lake via either the 16 or the 26, catch on 3rd Ave between Madison and Marion (a block or two south of Spring). That's the #1 flat place where Seattle people actually visit to go running, rollerblading, etc.
maybe later. I want to run twice a day and that bus will be a drag
waterfront is nice and close
@DennisKaarsemaker It is both those things. Have a great time!
@Wesley I'm pretty sure that there's a place on Usenet for that... alt.sex.fetish.xenophilia.powered-by-kittypoo?
20:52
@MilesErickson There is a place on Usenet for everything
21:20
@ewwhite Wait what?
@Iain How's the lycra?
@Wesley all ready to go to Wiggo's Golden Box tomorrow
@Iain Looks neat - how long of a ride?
Just checked a map - that seems quite a ride.
By the time I get home it will be ~90 miles. Depending on how quick we are I may do the extra 10
Gasp!
You gain 500 feet in elevation? I had no idea you had mountains like that there. =)
We can cycle through the Birkenhead tunnel on the way out but it's closed to cycles after 8 am so we'll have to get a ferry cross the Mersey or a train on our return
@Wesley Lancashire is quite flat there s an article about the first bump in spincyclemag.com/node/1 on page 19 - Shaley Brow
21:36
@MilesErickson spring stree - Myrtle Edwards was a nice run. But damn I'm out of shape.
@DennisKaarsemaker I love Myrtle Edwards. It's a lovely walk.
gonna go run that every day for the next 3 weeks until I can make it to centennial park without break
right now I have to walk for a bit every 8-10 minutes
@DennisKaarsemaker The run along Alki from the West Seattle Bridge up around the point to the lighthouse and back is really nice too.
Luna Park Cafe makes pretty good milkshakes. And their breakfasts are awesome too. Plus the memorabelia from the old now-underwater amusement park is cool too.
thats 4+ miles from the hotel, A bit far for a breakfast run
@Iain Oh and that's quite a regal looking calico you have there.
@Magellan Dude, cat avatar. Nao. =P
We went from Real Faces to kittehs.
Keep with the trends man.
21:42
@Wesley I'll see if I can get the little monster to hold still that long.
@Magellan Tuna!
@Magellan @MilesErickson any suggestions for dinner around spring & 4th?
@Wesley calico ?
@Iain Your cat looks like a calico.
That's Ellie 'The Minx'
21:44
@Iain Wait, calico appears to be less used outside of north america. "tortoiseshell-and-white"
@DennisKaarsemaker Il Forniao has some really good chicken according to my old boss.
and she's a tortie and white :)
@Magellan thanks
@DennisKaarsemaker My old boss is, well, completely awesome and ever-so slightly insane. I'd go work for him anytime anywhere. =)
So yes, if he says the food is good, you can depend on it.
t'was wet here today so I did some baking :)
22:02
I really hate services that allow you to enter a password longer than 16 characters but trancate it when building the hash.
@Iain looks delicious! are the ones on the right sweet or salty?
@Dennis What kind of food do you like?
@DennisKaarsemaker There's some awesome sushi down that way, at a place called Nijo.
@DennisKaarsemaker You're also near the Metropolitan Grill, which is generally reputed to have some of the best steaks in Seattle.
@dawud a real mix of savoury, salt, pepper, sesame, thyme, rosemary, garlic and some indian spices too
@Iain Reminds my of my fiance's Simon & Garfunkel omelettes. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.
@Magellan I can do 3 of them :)
22:10
@Wesley Avatar updated. That better?
@Magellan nice pussy ;)
anyway Adrian what's the significance of @Magellan ?
@Iain That's my motorcycle club nickname. I have a tendency to get lost and sometimes I argue with the maps and roadsigns. Especially when they're wrong.
:)
Oregon is really weird. The State Highways and State Roads are different things but sometimes have the same numbers and names. I was travelling down a road there that the Oregon Dept. of Transportation had signed wrong but was correct on the map based on the Oregon state law defining where it was supposed to be going.
I had the map for the small group I was in and stopped to consult because I knew the road didn't turn there. So they started calling me Magellan.
@Magellan `D'awww. Looks Maincoonie.
22:16
@Wesley She does. She's only about 6.5lbs though. A bit stunted by her original cat hoarder owner.
Her legs should be 3" longer to be in proportion to the body length.
@Magellan D=
@Magellan Okay, I've got a Venti dark roast with three shots in it, and the evening to read through my Ruby book.
Let's do this thing!
@Wesley Ha! I'm ripping out all the default stupidity in CentOS and putting in real network services. Goonna convert it all to Chef and build out Nagios for the existing production env. and then start working on the initial version of RubyThing.
Call my crazy, but I don't quite trust KVM on Ubuntu, so it's Ubuntu VMs on a CentOS 6 host.
And whoever thought a default lease time of 600 seconds for that DDNS/DHCPd tutorial was clearly high.
Sup, nerds.
@Magellan I've got some ideas for a subscription based site to solve some problems, so looking into simple user management and whatnot. Thinking I should maybe make a domain or something... dunno.
@Wesley Yeah, been pondering that. Considering doing a run through using an existing Ruby-based CMS.
22:31
@Magellan do you trust KVM on anything?
@MDMarra More than I trust Hyper-V...
:(
So I'm rocking ios 7 beta 6 on iPhone and iPad now.
It's weird but I'm liking it
That's a kitten?
@MDMarra Runs fine here for my home network & Development stuff. I wouldn't trust it in production
22:34
Was it electrocuted?!
I've been feeding this babe the last couple of days
Looks like a baby warthog.
I need to find her a home (soon)
serverfault.com/questions/537107/how-to-block-torrents Chuck delete votes on that pos please
Thank you
The down side to deleting is he gets his rep back.
@MDMarra Though.. the latest version of Windows Azure Linux Agent also has code to integrate with SCVMM. I don't have an environment to test this in, but you might find it of interest.
22:43
I still don't understand the idea that we should accept questions from people without proper usernames. They're never any good.
Personally I'm opposed to the whole post without registering entirely.
Exactly.
What is this, Craigslist?
Of course, even if you register you don't have to choose a username.
At the very least, the automatically assigned usernames should be prepended with "idiot" instead of "user".
Hey, I could write a script for that.
23:08
@Magellan What version of Ruby are you committing in?
@Wesley tentatively, 1.9.3.
Wesleys-MacBook-Air:ruby wesley$ ruby -v
ruby 1.8.7 (2012-02-08 patchlevel 358) [universal-darwin12.0]
Wee! =P
I know I know.
bash: ruby: command not found
Specifically 1.9.3p429
Oh here we go...
23:11
It's what ubuntu 12.04LTS is running nowadays.
ruby 2.0.0p247 (2013-06-27 revision 41674) [x86_64-linux]
Grr. Stupid CentOS decided this was a grand time to stop forwarding......
RAGE Gorramit Comcast! I know you've been using IPv6 for 4 years to manage the hardware but you STILL don't offer it for customer use in Seattle!
@Magellan Have you seen comcast6.net lately?
@Wesley funny, i'm gaining ca. +3400 m every weekend in summer :E
23:26
@MichaelHampton Yes. 15 minutes ago. And, of course, they started rolling it out in the redneck nirvana that is the rural towns and suburbs NE of Portland/VancouverWA. How can they tell if IPv6 works out there? Nobody owns a computer there!
@MichaelHampton same on Fedora 19 here
grump
@Magellan Well, that means it was quick to deploy, then :)

Q: Server Rebooted itself early morning

GhostCentOS 6.3 x86_64 Server has been running great for over a year, it rebooted itself around 7am. I looked in messages and couldn't find anything pointing to a cause other then when it started up again. Need some help in being pointed to a log that will show me why it rebooted.

Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!
23:54
@Magellan Unregistered user!
Gah
The bike I sent to @Wesley came back return-to-sender....
