@Hennes no, but there was a bear shitting by it
@MichaelHampton Nope I nearly killed a VM node FS
Aha. the server must have been a honeypot!
HAR DE HAR HAR
I've edited some config file on a server once, then wondered why a service was still not working. Wrong server. Whoops.
@Tanner That should say "Nagios alert especially if it never happened."
18:06
@Cole Find a fire and die in it.
^Server room is a Honey Bucket?
@Jacob Do you need help killing it?
Listen, I had to go bad. Don't judge.
@WesleyDavid "Nagios alert never if it happened" :-)
Plus @voretaq7 Keeps me in the subfloor.
18:06
@WesleyDavid shut up and pull cable!
@voretaq7 That too.
I have literally NEVER seen a properly-functioning Nagios installation.
Hm, this seems pretty decent
@MichaelHampton No, I need help with crappanel quotas
18:07
@voretaq7 Define "properly-functioning"
@Jacob Ha. Don't ask me.
@MichaelHampton I sent it up to devoops to screw up for me
@NathanC false negative rate near zero. False positive rate < 5%
Most of the ones I've encountered have an indeterminate false-negative rate, because the false-positive rate is better than 90%
People still use Nagios? Gawd.
@MichaelHampton people in this room use it.
18:09
Ours is a small install but any time I've seen alerts it was because something was actually happening.
The first thing I look for in a monitoring system is "not Nagios." The second thing I look for is "not based on Nagios."
3
@MichaelHampton Well, at least it's a better monitoring system than the end-user or people calling saying "WHY IT NO WORK?!"
@NathanC Oh yeah, nagios is usually better than nothing.
So Solarwinds > Nagios?
@MichaelHampton @NathanC No. No it isn't.
It's better to have no monitoring than one that constantly false-flags.
you become so habituated to ignoring your monitoring that you don't act on real problems
18:11
I mean, other than the learning cliff curve it works fine for me.
er
markdown, i hate you
@NathanC cliff
@Cole Never used Solar Winds in production. We tried it at $job[-1] and found it "wanting"
yeah, that
@NathanC ---text---
@voretaq7 SolarWinds what? There's like nine hundred different products in their catalog.
18:12
@voretaq7 It's pretty easy to use. Which is good for here.
got it
:D
Do I think it's the best? No. Do I think it's usable and doesn't suck as bad as Zabbix/Zenoss/Nagios? Yes.
@WesleyDavid Server & Application Monitor
We use Server & App Monitor, as well as Log and Event Manager
we found we would have needed that, plus their network thing, plus their netflow thing...
so basically we found them "wanting" money.
18:13
@voretaq7 Weee! That's the one they have me talk up once a year during their Ambassador Days.
@WesleyDavid intermapper is better :-P
@voretaq7 Yeah I'm no shill, it has lots of room for improvement.
And I tell them.
And amazingly they still have me come back.
I think it's more of misconfiguration than actual issues with Nagios
This created my owner inner monologue -- "Super User is for **computer enthusiasts** and power users"

"If you boat a lot, you're known as a boating enthusiast. I like to boat, but I just don't want to ever be referred to as a 'boating enthusiast'. I hope they call me 'a guy who likes to boat' - Mitch Hedberg (comedian deceased)

"If you work on computers a lot, you're known as a computer enthusiast. I like to work on computers, but I just don't want to ever be referred to as a 'computer enthusiast'. I hope they call me 'a guy who likes computers" - TheCleaner
I mean, I haven't had a single false positive since it's been set up
18:14
@TheCleaner beats markdown with John Gruber
@WesleyDavid yeah the intermapper people keep talking to me even after I rip their product apart and demand new features
in fact they keep bringing me the new features as a peace offering.
Go go install CrushFTP!
("InterMapper Datacenter" - their whole reporting engine thingy - $job[-1] badgered them into that :P)
@Cole notBadObama.jpg
18:15
@WesleyDavid is he drinking Guiness?
@MattBear I dunno. I only post memes, that's about all I know in life.
@WesleyDavid well if he is, he is no longer such a douche
@MattBear he is holding Guiness.
My Obama pic I took last year in China...
Whether he drinks it or not is uncertain from the photograph.
@TheCleaner are they saying nice things about him, or bad things?
Ahhh coffeeeeee. Now my headache is gone and I feel less dizzy. I am so addicted to caffeine it's not a joke.
Ugh CrushFTP is Java?
@voretaq7 the matchbox or the people there?
@WesleyDavid It's not an addiction until you need pills.
@TheCleaner Yes.
@Cole Ugh. FTP?
18:20
@voretaq7 the old "I didn't inhale" defense?
@voretaq7 Mike... you know I take Xenadrine XT caffeine pilles once or twice a day right?
@MattBear no... that makes you look like an idiot.
@WesleyDavid ... addict.
@voretaq7 it does more than FTP
there you go markdown.
@Cole FTP is in the name. Tainted by design.
@voretaq7 lol... he shoulda just been "Yuuup, it was good shit too!"
18:21
even SFTP is dead to me because it uses the command set.
So what does everyone like for monitoring?
@voretaq7 blame @WesleyDavid
@MattBear "Smoke it? We fucking grew it in my dorm!"
landslide victory - right there.
I'm starting to really dislike eBay's feedback policies.
The users. "Hey, it no worky" is cheap and easy to install
18:21
@Tanner pinhole cameras with infrared capabilities installed in bathrooms
@voretaq7 rofl yuuup
@Tanner I use intermapper. I don't love it, but I generally tolerate its problems because it's easy and flexible.
Tweet in which I show my caffeine pills to @voretaq7 (I don't even keep the lid on I use them so much) http://t.co/p9BpoVSJPm
And their documentation sucks
@voretaq7 At least use an affiliate code! Sheesh.
It's apparent from my interactions so far and the seller's longer-term history that they're shady as all get out, and about 75% chance they're trying to scam me right now. But eBay only shows the last 12 months in their feedback report. You have to dig yourself if you want to see older. Guy has a spotted history for 4 our of 5 years on eBay, only the last 12 months have no negatives.
18:23
@WesleyDavid I don't have one.
I'm just a (whiny, annoying) user :)
@voretaq7 GO GET ONE, MERIKUHN!
@voretaq7 from the folks I encountered during my vists over the years...They saw Bush as a "cowboy"...they see Obama as a "rockstar". But they don't take anything we do too serious except when it comes to economics. The chinese are masters at long term strategy. We care about instant gratification, they are fine with suffering away if it means they will be the dominant force 100 years from now.
@WesleyDavid ...I.... I don't want a merkin. I'm happy with my natural pubic hair. (freakish perverted cat)
Also, people with over 13 years of spotless (no negatives, no neutrals) records show up with the same "100% Feedback" as sh*theads like this guy.
@voretaq7 Let's just say I budget a lot for razors. =P
@ChrisS Well heck.
18:26
@TheCleaner 100 years?
more like 20 years
Anybody bought any Remote Desktop CALs lately?
No, why?
@RyanRies I'll have an email to you today. I flaked out on you yesterday - sorry. I've been on a Fail Train of weird nonsense popping up at all hours, including family and pets getting injured.
Because I wanted to see how much you paid for them
Because loop: i.imgur.com/l93g1cv.gif
18:27
@WesleyDavid No worries... I've been really busy at work
That's how I feel about users today
In speaking of which...I installed TS on an older 03 box to do some testing and it found a license server. But when I fired up the license manager on the server that has it (or, I thought had it) it says it can't find one.
This question serverfault.com/questions/519103/… brings up another point @ChrisS about tag clean up. For things like Exchange, Windows, Linux, etc. wouldn't it be better to force users to pick the version like Exchange-2007 or Exchange-2010 or Windows-2008-R2, etc.? Yes, there are times when the question/answer can bleed over to any version of Windows (like my latest question, so I picked "Windows"), but I struggled with what to pick.
@RyanRies I think retail is ~$100 last I looked... Order a lot and they get cheap
@MattBear meaning they could wait 100 years or 1,000 years if they had to. They don't really care much about short term goals...they have them but their long term goals are paramount.
18:28
@TheCleaner I think we had that conversation a while ago and they decided no...
@TheCleaner I'm pretty sure if he can't figure out how to generate a selfie cert with SAN then he's running something ancient. I'll put my money on Ex2000 (though Ex2003 is pretty likely too).
OK, just seems just like Zoredache's comment, if the tag were already there with the version then the muda would be reduced. (like that word?)
@JoelESalas Want lunch?
@ChrisS - I'm thinking ex2007 or 2010...only because he talks about internal/external FQDN settings...didn't mean much before then.
@RyanRies I'm being quoted $115 for 1, $573 for 5. I could probably do a little better if I shopped around more.
18:35
(true story: I went to college with a guy who used that. I made fun of him mercilessly.
@voretaq7 Yeah, I have sensitive skin. =/
That's an important bicycling accessory!
@MichaelHampton Too expensive
18:35
^ Hurts but works.
@MichaelHampton $115 for a single user to connect to a server you spent $2000+ on. Yay M$
@WesleyDavid Tearing the hair from my skin isn't quite my definition of "works"
@NathanC Yeah, tell me about it. WTF. I'm trying to steer that client to some other (Linux-based?) solution...
but then again I'm Italian, I have a lot of hair...
@voretaq7 It doesn't come back for like four weeks!
@voretaq7 Bro, I'd totally get into a body hair competition with you. I think I'll win. I don't know what part of my mutt ancestry gives it to me, but yeah. Tank tops are not my favorite clothes without some manscaping.
18:37
I have a feeling we'll be making a purchase soon if we switch to using terminals on the factory floor
the crazy people in those commercials always look so happy doing it. In reality it's more like this:
Have to say, glad I don't have back hair
yet
@voretaq7 Quoted for truth.
@Cole Yet.
@WesleyDavid ...you're already the reigning champion of "Straight people say the gayest things" -- no need to defend it.
18:38
I have some pretty sweet nipp hair now
@Cole . . . <adds to list of things you should never hear>
Noticed today I'm starting to get "ape hands" as Abby likes to call them.
@Cole I've had ape hands since age 13.
Oddly, the treadclimber I get on each night is too narrow, so the backs of my hands rub on the rails and the hair is now getting bald patches.
So I now look like a hairy ape with radiation poisoning.
So there's that.
Hot.
Wow.
That's terrifying.
@WesleyDavid you rub the hair off your palms a couple times a day too right?
@MattBear That's what the Nad's is for.
@WesleyDavid treadclimber?
who flagged the horror?
@WesleyDavid you need to get with the times...
18:42
@voretaq7 Combination treadmill and stair machine
its fashionable to shave kitties
@voretaq7 So you get cardio while you cardio.
@WesleyDavid that sounds... terrible.
@voretaq7 Low resting heart rate, broseph.
But...I don't want to cardio
18:43
@WesleyDavid it looks.... very prone to breakage
Digging trenches burns even more than that :P
@MattBear Two years strong, so far so good. And mine is first generation too!
Granted we happen to need one
@WesleyDavid I dunno.... that a shit ton of moving parts
18:43
@WesleyDavid can't you just jog, or hike, or something.... that isn't terrible?
@voretaq7 It's 110 outside, overnight low in the 90s. So jogging and hiking are out for at least four months. Also, I like total prep time of 20 seconds and no traffic or dogs.
@voretaq7 yeah, thats what I do... unless its hot out and im at the gym
@WesleyDavid hmm... you could run nekkid and no one would care
@voretaq7 Also, maximum cardio results in minimum time. 45 minutes on that thing will wopp yer buttocks pretty good. Good training for the harder mountain trails around here in hiking season. I.e. when it's not hot enough to melt lead on your scalp.
except neighbors, cause your right by the window with it open
@MattBear Everyone would stop and say "What a hot sexy hardbody... or is that a sentient lint wad escaped from an industrial dryer?"
18:46
@WesleyDavid ok... that made me laugh
Lent, lint... does it really matter?
There's cat all over the star wall. It's clawing off the wallpaper...
I give up lint for Lent.
@WesleyDavid I prefer to exercise somewhere other than my house.
18:46
@voretaq7 I prefer not to leave my house unless absolutely necessary.
@WesleyDavid you're a cat.
@ChrisS . . . pretty damn hard actually
Why the hell does anybody live in the middle of a roasting desert?
Boredom.
Hunger.
Wanting to cook the world's fattest man.
@voretaq7 Asian child workers do it all the time - can't be that hard
@ChrisS do you know how hard it is to FIND those asian child workers?
18:48
@voretaq7 No, I try to avoid morally abhorrent behavior
@voretaq7 finding em isnt hard, keeping them from getting found once you have them, thats hard
@ChrisS but.... sysadmin?
@voretaq7 and figuring out what to do with them after they are no longer child workers.... thats even harder
@ChrisS it cant be unseen...
18:50
@ChrisS yeah, that's...probably about accurate.
thanks
@voretaq7 TSA, NSA, whatever
Show of hands, who thought he was going back for a third pump of lube?
Next question, how many people considered whether 2 should be enough, of if 3 was really necessary?
^ What did he say? What did he say?!
TIL: unicode has codepoints for the rock-paper-scissors game
18:55
@DennisKaarsemaker I broke my unicodes. =(
@DennisKaarsemaker indeed it does.
@voretaq7 I'm slightly disappointed lizard and spock are missing.
My unicode font is nonstandard
18:58
@voretaq7 That is standard - mine is not
though there is a codepoint for punching
@DennisKaarsemaker 🐊 <- Lizard
^ Boxy little thing.
But still cute.
there's no vulcan hand salute
so no spock.
deprived cat.
(The lizard is a crocodile I believe)
19:01
@voretaq7 Depraved. Get it right.
@WesleyDavid both.
My unicodes are the ones deprived.
Won't someone please think of the unicodes!
Frack iPhoto sucks. Why do I still use this to get photos and videos off my phone.
Damn, I don't have any of these code points.
YOU PEOPLE NEED TO UPDATE YOUR GODDAMN FONT SETS!
Slashdot is doing an Ask Jimmy Wales what you will. I want to ask him why his creepy pedobear-esque mug has to grace every Wikimedia beg-a-thon.
Today is a good day. I gained the power to approve global SSL certificates from Cybertrust!
19:10
@RyanRies Excellent. Gimmie one for google.com
I totes own that domain
What do you do when a candidate can't answer anything?
@MDMarra thank them for their time, and beat the shit out of the recruiter.
@MDMarra If you're like my boss, you get up and leave without saying anything, leaving me in there alone with the candidate, then text me 5 minutes later with "that was a joke, I bailed"
@MDMarra Hang up and call the next candidate.
@RyanRies ...your boss buy ya a pint at the pub later?
19:12
Seeing the various questions about "what kind of software should I use" etc...does anyone actually know of a peer-reviewed site for software/hardware? Something similar to amazon reviews with starring and comments. I know there are industry mag sites or watchdog groups, but didn't know if a peer-reviewed site existed.
Yeah, I wasn't really mad about it, more amused really
Can you briefly explain the 5 Operations Master roles in AD?

Uhhh

Ok, let's take a step back. Can you explain the difference between a security group and a distribution group?

Security groups are for access and authorization. Distribution groups are for organization.
facepalm
Isn't a distribution group what Exchange calls a mailing list?
@MichaelHampton I think so
19:13
it's for mail only and can't be used in an ACE
I know jack and shit about Active Directory, but I at least know to go to Server Fault and read whatever @MDMarra wrote about it.
6
haha
these candidates did have my name beforhand
He seemed like a nice guy, so I kept throwing questions about different tech out there. But this screen was for managed services so we need a specific skillset
I couldn't just say "tell me about what you know"
And yes, there are the five FSMO roles right there.
I just shut down one out of three datacenters in Amsterdam, and almost no one complained! Again... tis a good day.
@RyanRies dude, I got flowing with Orchestrator last night
I was up until at least midnight pimping out my demo lab
19:16
@MDMarra Very nicely worded
Got any cool workflows yet?
@MDMarra "pimp my lab".... hmmmmmmmmmm <calls up MTV>
or whoever is doing the "Pimp my <thing>" shows these days...
@MDMarra Now that you're here, what do you make of this?
@RyanRies I can have a user request a receive-on address through the portal and have it added to their exchange mailbox with one "approval" click from the manager
Nice... you'll have to do something with Desired State Configuration in 2012 R2 for building VMs from templates or somesuch
Now that I figured out how to actually manipulate data from service manager, I can start getting wild. I had a eureka moment and it all made sense
19:19
I started learning AD when I got this job. It's been a process for sure.
Google's been a savior as has SF actually.
As well as poking at things until it either screams and freaks out at me or it works correctly.
repadmin /syncall /APed is the shit when you have 12 sites
@MichaelHampton The cat is right
@MDMarra and yet a security group can be mail enabled and then used as a distro for users in that group. #funwithexchange
@TheCleaner That it can
Which would have been my followup question, had he known the first question
@RyanRies I had a weird problem the other day after enabling change notify with no compression (option 5). The setting didn't kick in until like an hour later, even after forcing replication, deleting site links and repadmin /kcc on both bridgeheads
But then it magically started working, so I stopped looking at it
@ChrisS - <bows humbly> serverfault.com/questions/519103/… (exch2003)
19:24
Kerio actually uses distribution groups like exchange does
but not security groups, which is unfortunate
in exchange you need to main-enabled a security group to send mail to it
@MDMarra change notifications are pulls though
Everytime I write a support email, I feel like I'm suiting up for battle. "Oh yeah, let's just see you try and suggest something I haven't thought of, brain donors!!"
@RyanRies right, but even 15-20 minutes later replication wasn't happening
Then, magically, it dropped to like 15 seconds
Currently writing a thesis-level support email and smiling devilishly as I point by point knock down potential lazy suggestions.
19:26
Hmmm
@WesleyDavid Have you tried turning it off and on again?
@NathanC Oops.
@RyanRies - nice job on the hyper-v backup script btw...simple and to the point.
@TheCleaner Aww it was nothing... I just hadn't posted in a few days and needed some easy blog fodder :)
I made it for my lab at home where I just wanted to back all my shit up periodically to NAS
19:30
In speaking of backups...I should make sure the DC is actually doing what it's supposed to.
^ You're mocking me aren't you.
Oh wow, a dentist office that actually has appointments after 4pm
whee
And I could book the appointment online. Works for me.
<taps feet waiting for answer timer>
@voretaq7 "You answered too quickly!" timer resets
@NathanC yes, it does. Stupid timer.
19:37
@WesleyDavid yes. Also, that was a picture of you.

Q: New close reasons - Proposals (July 2013)

voretaq7As everyone should be aware by now, a new off-topic close dialog has been implemented network-wide. The new system offers us the opportunity to customize our off-topic close reasons, and This post is here to allow the community to propose and vote on our custom off-topic reasons. We are allowed...

I got off my lazy ass.
2
that you people star, but not the one about having the power to influence your own destiny? Oy...
@JoelESalas Stood-up.
Who gets the green checkmark for this one?
@ewwhite I'd say Lucas
Make Lucas and Shane fight it out in a cage match
@voretaq7 and Chopper...
with lube
19:41
@ewwhite I'd throw Chopper in there too, but that would hardly be fair - his violent streak is probably as dangerous as mine.
@WesleyDavid got CrushFTP up - now to figure out how to work this bitch
@MDMarra I need to learn how to use the File Server Resource Manager quick
to do what
@voretaq7 I want to add "because you use cpanel" and "because you have no fucking clue what you're doing"
@Cole Nice!
19:44
though #1 is a specialization of #2
@voretaq7 No. Because cat.
@DennisKaarsemaker I just posted our initial 3 starting reasons- I'm not endorsing any of them :P
@MDMarra I need about 20 new shares at valley
@voretaq7 I think he meant using cpanel = no idea what you're doing
There definitely needs to be some sort of "not professional" close reason, separate from "home user".
19:48
@ewwhite You don't want me to sort that out any more?
Only use FSRM for quotas, do normal stuff the normal way
can you help?
k...
sure. tonight?
What do you guys think about the Dev Environment vs Dev Tools issue --

Q: Interpretation of Off Topic

BryanI'm seeing a fair number of questions that are getting closed as off topic on a regular basis, I'm trying to understand why this is the case. The type of questions are those that involve desktops or developers. I've been going over the review queue for quite some time, and I feel like I'm missin...

@MDMarra Same motel as usual?
you know it
19:54
should we just add "development" to the help center? (seems the most logical solution)
When I run minicom and try to enter at commands in the window, it doesn't let me. It just shows a blinking cursor. On the bottom of the window, it says this: CTRL-A Z for help |115200 8N1 | NOR | Minicom 2.4 | VT102 | Online 00:01
Im on ubuntu
I have no clue if my modem is working or not
