@FalconMomot The battery in the BBU was dead, so the ONT died when the battery died.( It pulls power from the battery not the AC adaptor, so we had another when we had 2 services, so I swapped batteries and BOOM fixed.
@RyanRies Oh and because my phone was going in and out, why are you jealous of me?
@Jacob Seriously? You're going to go throwing around phrases like that about a service you know virtually nothing about? Do you really know how real life works Jacob? You have a lot to learn about life and the way the real world works. You talk a lot of talk for someone who isn't even out of highschool yet.
It appears that on Server Fault and Super User, the navigation bar and question title have suddenly become misplaced. The same does not occur on SO and mSO, nor on any of the other SE sites I spot-checked.
This is being seen in both Chrome and Firefox and just began occurring within the last few...
@RobM Yeah, most of them. Even the boss that I've been complaining about; he's a really nice guy, and I like him a lot more as a friend than as a boss.
@RobM The problem with having a really nice person that wants to get along with everybody as a boss is that as a boss you sometimes need to handle being in conflict with people...
@RobM It really is. I have a very dear friend who's really ill, and won't be getting better in the foreseeable future. She can't speak on the phone much. Facebook etc have really improved her quality of life!
That's good - FB makes it a lot easier to keep in touch with friends and family for me, nothing like as serious as keeping up with a friend who's ill, but still.
@JennyD I'm really happy how much I see the people from my old work - like you, it was a big concern. I went for a drink with one of them last week and we realised that we met 8 years ago!
It's been a long day and I am pretty tired and that's the only reason I can figure that I thought I would rename one of the volumes on this old macbook (running osx 10.6) without worrying about anything else. Actually, it's the /home partition and I inherited the computer from my wife and it's a...
I've elfoip.net with bind
$ whois elfoip.net | grep 'Name Server'
Name Server: NS.ELFOIP.NET
I need elfoip.net be able to serve third levels domain, like mickymouse.elfoip.net, etc...
Yes, I'm trying to create an other useless dyndns clone.
i've added some third level as A RR.
Eg: executi...
@Dan I decided not to get involved. My helpful comment was going to be - if you can't figure this out then perhaps trying to setup a DynDNS clone isn't for you
@dan likewise, quite a few of my old teachers, who are now heads of various schools around here, look quite upset when they work out who the "expert" from the local college who's advising them is.
@RobM The day I went back to consult at my old secondary was a nerve racking one. But, actually, it was a really fun project and the IT Coordinator (Who had briefly taught me, and had fallen out hugely with my younger brother) was a pleasure to work with
@Iain In the three school's I've worked in theres the staff that stay late, try hard and are liked by the students. Then you've got the others who are just in it for the holidays and do the bare minimum to get through and somehow managed to stay employed even though their supervised OFSTED lesson was awful.
@Iain See, this is where I struggle. I'm not so left wing as to believe there aren't some seriously hateful children (and parents) out there, so on one hand I'd gladly support more powers for the schools and staff. But, I've also seen the ways that these are massively abused by schools (especially the higher achieving ones) in order to massage figures and make their life easier
@Iain To be fair, though, I was kind of that kid and for that I'm a little annoyed at myself. I sometimes wonder if there should be some kind of gap between primary and secondary education where you do [something else]
@Ethan Sometimes, our jobs can be a painful process. Telling someone not to do something, then watch them do excactly the same thing you just told them not to do. And if something breaks because of what they did, it's your fault.
I do like being a sysadmin. I'd like it better if I could choose who to work with and what systems to run, but usually both those things are to a greater or lesser extent decided above my pay grade.
But I think it's also good to try more than one kind of job. I believe that I'm better at my current job as a sysadmin partly because of the things I've learned as a checkout cashier, a forwarding agent, a translator, etc...
@Ethan It depends a bit on where you work, but basically it's "keep the computers running, stable and secure"
@Ethan Not when I was young. I've always been interested in messing with computers, but 25 years ago it wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today, and I had no idea where to start... But I somehow always was the go-to person for computer problems wherever I worked. And then I found unix, and really really liked it, and learned enough to get a job at an ISP, and that was my first sysadmin job.
:10050954 I don't think there's any point with my life specifically, i.e. there's no higher power having a purpose for me. That makes me free to make up my own mind about what is important in my life.
@Ethan If you're spending some time talking to one person and then say that the conversation is boring, it sounds a great deal like your saying that the other person is boring. Which isn't very polite, especially when it's a subject that you yourself started.
What is the main difference between hw and sw firemare ?
using a BSD firewall distro (ex. pfsense) is a good choose as using an hw firewall (ex. a cisco one ) ?
if not why ?
So basically what is the best choose ?
@Ethan Dude..seriously? You're 17 years old, getting ready to maybe graduate high school and you're coming into an IT professional chat asking what to do with your life? That's what parents and guidance counselors are for. Asking what you should do in IT is what we are here for. Asking someone wtf their purpose in life is?! You make me want to fuckin' cuss!
Want to know IT? I came in yesterday to a phone call where our dumbass receptionist is telling me her ef'in computer is ef'in typing on its own. This dumbass was watching an ef'in tutorial video on how to order toner cartridges and has done it THREE ef'in times and can't figure out why the ef they haven't come in yet! A god damn tutorial video! She can't figure out it's a god damn video!
