@JourneymanGeek Uhm, putting people through a legitimate trial?
@Dan: yup. posthaste.
(although, I guess it's force-fed...)
but at this point, anyone who is in there who wasn't radicalised probably is
@ewwhite Oh well then, at least they have plenty of roughage. Must be nice when they have to pass it through a butt that just got gouged with a broom handle!
=P
throwing people in internment camps is stupid
15:00
But really, =(
@JourneymanGeek tell that to the germans
@ewwhite It's not for the inmates, see the thrilling documentary "Harold and Kumar escape from guantanamo bay" for more information ;-)
@DennisKaarsemaker: how well did that work?
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Yeah, I can see what you mean
or the japanese?
15:01
Or the Russians.
or the boy scouts
FUCK YOU LOTUS NOTES.
HTML email? Oh, that's too intense for me!
Okay, internment camps would probably work for the Lotus Notes team. Let's not get too soft in here.
15:02
(that said, I'm all in the 'work out who is REALLY behind this, and convince them violently and painfully its a bad idea')
(Pakistani intelligence for example)
Let's keep Gitmo around for the people who made Lotus Notes, J.D. Edwards ERP, and all of Oracle.
@WesleyDavid: what did cuba ever do to you?
And lest we forget:
@WesleyDavid don't forget SAP
@WesleyDavid Please include the technical writers from MS responsible for documenting the CAPI2 log events
15:04
and just put a fence around cupertino to prevent more crap from escaping
@DennisKaarsemaker Man, we're getting a big list here. We might really have to annex Puerto Rico and move everyone to Miami just to have space for all the horrible people we need to torture.
@ewwhite: people who don't RTFM... or read the FAQ ;p
@JourneymanGeek or maybe @voretaq7
@WesleyDavid: just get a few ships and build a large corall. And make em fight to death. In jetskies
15:06
@ewwhite The sad thing is, as he was typing he was probably thinking "Oh boy! This is gonna be good!"

@JourneymanGeek Mad Max: Waterworld Edition!
SF's "FAQ" sucks pretty hard now... It think it's incredibly hard to figure out what the site is all about with the chopped up "help" interface they came up with.

@JourneymanGeek Death Race: H20 Edition.
15:07
@Iain True, but I don't much care about the rest...
@WesleyDavid: you actually watched that piss-swilling crap didn't you? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Mad Max? Of course! Waterworld? No.
mad max was good
@ChrisS true, I think it's all part of the pinking and fluffification of SE so thet noobs don't get a hard time
Yeah the help center is a pile of shit.
2
15:08
waterworld...
@JourneymanGeek And hey, PBR isn't that bad.
@MDMarra What's worse, /help or /r/sysadmin?
@ChrisS its also harder to link specific stuff
That moment where there's >150 pending jobs on one printer...
Nobody reads the help center anyway.
and it just goes offline randomly
15:10
@WesleyDavid /r/syadmin
or /r/techsupportgore if you really want to punish yourself.
@Iain I suppose.. But I'd be frustrated as heck coming to a site that resembles a Forum, and getting swatted for treating it like a forum, and absolutely no clear & concise guidance as to how it's not a forum and what the topicality of each site actually is. Especially since the old sites have names which do not reflect the topic of the site.
@tombull89 Wow, I totally spaced it on that. /r/reddit? What even is that?
@MathiasR.Jessen That was the exact meme I was thinking of!
@ChrisS [about] tells noobs how
@WesleyDavid I knew it at "Oh boy!"
15:12
@ChrisS it is though near impossible to point someone at the faq any more in any meaningful way.
Horrow Movie for SysAdmins:
1) Apple desktop
2) DOS Prompt on Screen
3) 12 year old girl: "I know this! This is UNIX!"

Turned into comedy romance:
4) Raptors kill everyone.
As the question has been closed, the entire SF community is probably going to get the role of boogieman in his next horror movie

Q: What fast can a Windows 2008 CIFS client write to SAMBA server using 10gig NIC?

one_bsd_guyWe are experiencing performance problem using Windows 2008 CIFS client. We have a FreeNAS server that delivers 1.3GB/s on ZFS write. We have 10Gb network connecting NAS server and CIFS clients. Using two Linux CIFS clients, we can get around 1.2GB/s. But windows 2008 clients can only give us 400M...

@Iain Agreed
Somehow I think those numbers are a little exaggerated.
15:13
@NathanC Can I play the role of the lovable zombie kitten?
@NathanC Even better when the printer release it's jobs, and the job status goes from "Printing" to "deleted" and then the owners and job names gets changed into Japanese/Chinese/Kanjii characters.
@Iain True - maybe it should be required reading before being allowed to post...
@tombull89 I had one printer go through a power surge and since then the control panel was in dutch
no http access, and would print garbage
15:14
all of my wat
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS All new users should be required to attend an interview with the comms room
@Dan I'd be in favor of that
@ChrisS The problem with "required reading" is all we can verify is they made the HTTP request and received the content
I feel a great disturbance in the force, like a million voices have been silenced. That's a lot of beer.
@ChrisS finally sat down and figured out my tax liability for the year
that shit is way too hard
I gave in and let me HR person believe that she's right about the married-withholding-single thing
@MDMarra defeat
15:17
@voretaq7 Mini-quiz question after each major section (so maybe 4 questions in total, stupidly simple, but enough that they actually have to read the answers)
She's also had my address wrong an all payroll things since i've been hired
Even though I've told her this every pay period
@MDMarra Yeah - we get paid to do that stuff on a regular basis
@ChrisS ...if they fail do we ban their entire AS?
Calculating a "normal" person isn't even that hard - at least your taxes will look very similar to last year.
Hell, even a tick box saying "did you read" at the bottom of the page. If it's checked, go right through. If it's not, pass them through to the same page until they tick the box.
15:19
@ChrisS No, we get paid to do work as dictated in our contracts. Dealing with our Byzantine tax structure is work the government expects us to do for free in addition to that.
oh, yeah...#pinkandfluffy
@tombull89 Our users will go into idiot mode and start clicking everything (without looking) until the scary dialog box web page goes away
@voretaq7 the cracked out flipper baby? yeah I know.
@voretaq7 US taxes ... "do it right and for free so you can pay us money. Or pay someone else so you can pay us money. Oh, and if you don't get it right we'll audit you and either throw you in jail or fine you 1000000% the actual taxes."
@ChrisS Eh. We both switched jobs halfway through this year
So we'll have to re-do :(
15:22
yay, broken ISP
it nullrouted stackexchange for a bit
well, and a bunch of other sites too, looked like a transit connection going bye-bye
@tombull89 ayup. I'mma trademark that phrase.
@MDMarra Yeah, but it's not like you're going to claim short term losses with carry-forward on inside stock trades and section 172 accelerated depreciation on the Cessna you bought for 1/2 personal 1/2 business use (planes also get special treatment on top of the aforementioned complexities)
@DennisKaarsemaker ...someone didn't pay their bandwidth bill? :)
@ChrisS oh
right
Dan
Dan
Does everyone in the US have to do their own taxes?
15:24
mo money mo problems
@Dan most pay someone to do it for them
@voretaq7 biggest ISP here in .nl - I don't even want to know the amount of zeroes on that bill :)
@MDMarra If only you knew...
@Dan We're responsible for doing them - many/most have a professional do them.
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra But it doesn't work automatically, I take it?
What a weird week.

It's not all about throughput... — ewwhite 3 mins ago
...is what she said.
@Dan Employers withhold and remit to the government the taxes that they think you'll owe... But at the end of each year individuals still have to calculate the actual number and make up the difference
@Dan no, you have to file paperwork to tell them how much to withhold each pay check and if you get it wrong you might owe at the end. And then you have to actually file your taxes (federal, state, and local) each year where you just kinda type shit into a box on hrblock.com or go to a tax accountant that charges you $50-100
Dan
Dan
Ah, interesting
@Dan along with, I like my internet connectons like my men, with fat pipe?
Dan
Dan
@JourneymanGeek I was hoping it was just fast.
15:27
And there's not much checking of anything, so while your filing can be accepted if it's wrong ,you can be audited down the road
and end up owing even more
@Cole But the week's just beginning!
@MDMarra the shitty part
Dan
Dan
That's the same here. Taxes for normal people are mostly automatic - I don't have to fill in any forms, it's primarily down to my employer to sort it with the tax man. We get "codes" as to how much tax should be paid each month.

But when they fuck it up, they get to send you nice letters down the line saying "pay up"
@DennisKaarsemaker Usually it's a relatively small number if they're that big
@JourneymanGeek Welcome, come on down - you're the next contestant on "Straight men say the gayest things!" -- Now meet our defending champion: @WesleyDavid!

@voretaq7: I however don't ever talk about shoes ;p
15:31
@MDMarra at the height of my opulence, I was eating food laced with gold leaf while sitting on an oversized leather bed...
@Dan . . . no...forms?
@voretaq7 national ISP's here tend to have good local peering, international can be hit and miss.
how does your system function without senseless paper?
Now, I'm going to be like Wesley Snipes :(
@ewwhite golf leaf?
15:31
@Dan Employers here get to pick from 3 different methods of estimating taxes - none are terribly accurate, a problem Marra is having/had problems with.
GOLD leaf
@ewwhite Bleached blonde chevron haircut?
Though doing some traceroutes, looks like they've got youtube and lots of porn covered with peering, that should help :)
Dan
Dan
@voretaq7 In 10 years in the work place, I've never filled in a form for the tax man :)
15:32
@ewwhite Please tell me you're getting a bleached blonde chevron haircut.
@Dan HOW DOES YOUR SYSTEM FUNCTION?!
@voretaq7 A Michigan return is a minimum of 4 pages, even if I qualify for a 1 page Federal 1040EZ
Dan
Dan
@voretaq7 Relax, relax - it works the same as yours. With insane bureaucracy, backed by being near untouchable and unaccountable.
@ChrisS I haven't qualified for 1040EZ since...2001
@ScottPack Yep, sure.
15:33
@ewwhite I require photographic evidence. Or, as they say in the parlance of our day, pics or it didn't happen.
and NYS forms are a minimum of 4 pages (2x2 sides - you best file it that way or they fuck shit up.)
@Dan but NO FORMS?@
@Dan We have a gazillion loopholes for a billion different activities. We have person tax returns (from rich people) that reach 200+ pages long. Just to calculate one dumb number.
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Oh, yeah, I'm sure we're the same for anyone who isn't just a regular employee
@voretaq7 Yep - and there's about 2 lines filled out on 3 of those pages. Irritates me.
heh. I just give all my income and stock trading papers to an accountant. For 70€ he tends to sort out a 3000-4000€ cashback for me without breaking a sweat. And I don't have to read up on tax law :)
15:34
@ChrisS in NY you have to fill out every line
It starts with "Copy your Form 1040 Adjusted Gross Income here. Now add back all the shit NY won't let you deduct" (that's page 1)
I THINK they fixed it this year so a line with nothing entered scans as 0
but you used to have to enter "0" or it would scan the line as an invalid entry and kick your return for manual processing
@Dan Even for a "average Joe", he probably has 3-4 pages of Federal tax return, 1-4 of State, 1-4 of Local (City) - And this is only the Income Tax stuff. All the "other" taxes you don't file a return for, they don't want you knowing just how much tax you pay.
Dan
Dan
Madness
@ChrisS sales. fuel. tolls. liquor.
I hate our taxation system - it's designed to keep people in the dark, encourage outdated behaviors, and has so many loopholes that just the Federal tax code takes up 7500 pages of tiny print.
@NathanC well, the past week
15:39
@voretaq7 property, unemployment, social security
Social Security alone is almost 15%; FICA (Fed Unemployment) was 6.2% last year.
I'm cursed...

@ewwhite oh god
@ChrisS Can't you not do an EZ if you have investments?
(and don't you have investments?)
I'm waiting for @ChrisS or @voretaq7 to unleash the ever so calm wrath on this question

Q: Ultrabooks and projectors: is there any connectivity issue due to low power on video output?

sergeyI need to buy a new laptop for my wife. She travels a lot and I was thinking about an ultrabook (1.5-2 kg). However she says that ultrabooks have problems connecting to projectors. At least some of her colleagues could not connect their ultrabooks to projectors due to “low output issues”. She is...

@MDMarra Yes, oh god...
those days are over :(
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Fair play, my friend
15:45
Yeah, I haven't done an EZ myself for many years.
I do my whole family's returns, and several of my sisters do qualify for EZ.
@MDMarra Can't do an EZ unless you have basically nothing except wages
@ChrisS <pedantic>Social Security is an entitlement program</pedantic>
I can't do one because of deducting student loan interest heh
(yes, it's still a tax, but it's a tax you're supposed to actually get back)
15:46
Any idea why a user could not save an Excel file to a mapped drive but can save it to a shortcut to that drive?
<- would personally have no objection to paying social security taxes if I thought I'd actually get that money back like I'm supposed to :-/
Oh, you might get your money back. For a Ponzi scheme, it's surprisingly long-running.
@MichaelHampton It wasn't supposed to be a Ponzi scheme...
@voretaq7 It wasn't at first. The program was amended a few years after it was initially created.
@voretaq7 That's a whole other conversation, I'm just trying to get the tax conversation started by making sure people know they pay twice as much Social Security (and Medicare) tax as they think they do (because it only shows half on your paystub)
15:53
@MichaelHampton That goes with the low rate of return.
@84104 And the forcing everyone to participate.
@MichaelHampton yes, at which point collapse effectively became imminent.
@ChrisS go on
@MichaelHampton with an expanding population.
Save Social Security, have lots of children?
15:54
@ChrisS "I don't pay that tax, my employer does" -- Average American.
@MDMarra Er, that's it... You pay ~15% income tax to social security (and medicare)...
@MichaelHampton only if they're gainfully employed
@voretaq7 In that case, all your taxes are being "paid" by your employer.
so some of what you pay into other line items actually goes to SS
got it
15:54
@ChrisS no, it's clear what's being deducted from "your" pay
it's just not clear what your employer also has to pay for the privilege of having you on payroll.
@MDMarra Your employer does another Social Security and whatnot return on your behalf, you never see it... This way you think you're paying ~7.5%.
Ahh, cooking the books as required by Federal law.
@MichaelHampton Yes
