@voretaq7 NO! My beautiful on-screen leather!
@hcker2000 FTP STILL Considered Harmful.
(but go ahead and post a question on the main site with some details)
@voretaq7 yeah
Yea I will post it on there and see what comes of it
and then whatever else they wont tell us until WWDC
@David I don't expect much honestly
18:01
im looking threw already asked questions first
@voretaq7 apple always has something up their sleeve
i dont expect anything mind-blowing though
Definitely now comfortable with listening to Lady Gaga at work
It's been almost 3 years since I setup a FTP server, and two years since I ripped it out. tftp is a common need (network hardware).
@David yes, but is it going to be anything I care about?
@voretaq7 i dont know what you care about...?
18:03
I want a MacBook Air that I can play games on, and an iPad Mini update (retina display at least)
And a new OS X release with an I/O scheduler that doesn't shit the bed every time you touch the disk wouldn't go amiss.
other than that I doubt Apple is going to excite me with WWDC this year.
actually that's not true
maybe the 5S will blow your mind
if they even talk about it
there's ONE THING they could do in iOS that will make me happy
Ok, started bsdinstall, officially hate the first few screens...
MAKE THE GODDAMN FUCKING WEATHER ICON SHOW WEATHER FOR MY CURRENT LOCATION!
^^^ ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE?!? ^^^
@ewwhite How do I have monit alert me when it starts a dead service?
18:05
@ChrisS oh I didn't need to run it to know I wasn't going to like it
@voretaq7 hah, yeah
My weather shows below my clock, for my current location.
i bought Fahrenheit app ($0.99)
worth it
@David What app?
@David I'm not spending money for weather. I can look out the goddamn window.
18:06
Oh, a weather app
yeah
it shows the temp in the red notification circle
Oh it does it by default
I don't have that second bar, with the 5 day outlook, but the top part is identical. The bar under my clock shows appointments and such.
18:07
and way better weather than the default app
The iOS! IT burns!
@David that's.... fucking lame.
@voretaq7 better than nothing though
@David Fucking. Lame.
Apple can do better. I know because Android did better.
i'd bet money its a battery life concern
18:10
(not a fan of the whole animated desktop thing and giant flip calendar though)
wow... one of our websites got compromised on friday, and no one bothered to contect me...
2
since we know oh-so-well how android battery life tends to be sub-par
@David so make it an option.
@voretaq7 they dont do that
@MattBear Well, they did now! :p
18:10
@voretaq7 Animated background "wallpaper" sucks battery and just looks dumb IMHO
@ChrisS I don't care about the battery. It's lame.
battery life is like their prime directive, they wont put shit that hurts it or has a possibility of hurting it
it's like the whole "Active Desktop" webpage shit
@David build a better fucking battery.
@David Mine's great, but only after I rooted and replaced the kernel with one built with full support for the processor's power states and stuff.
@ChrisS lol exactly
iphone just works, out of the box
18:12
@voretaq7 It's "Bing Desktop" now.
@MattBear time for new job
and they dont want to tarnish that
or refactor the other shit in the system - seriously, the phone shouldn't go from 90% to 40% because I didn't turn off the cellular uplink before I walked into the subway.
@David that's a lie.
just because their users are dumb enough to believe it doesn't make it true. the iPhone has LOTS of problems that you have to configure your way around out of the box.
such as?
@David Right, except for iPhone 4, which had battery problems out of the box...
18:13
@David Notifications are about as annoying as a fucking Windows machine by default.
And the whole - you can't replace the battery - so after a few years of use the phone will only hold a charge for 15 minutes
@ChrisS my phone is getting pretty old and still holds a charge. the battery is pretty decent.
@voretaq7 meh, i like them
i dont really even see a reason to jailbreak any more
@voretaq7 What's "pretty old" to a New Yorker? 18 months?
@ChrisS 3-4 years
I can't find a serial number decoder
18:21
I don't experience this anyways
always buy new iphone, sell old one
make $$
@David I can't sell my phones
@voretaq7 why?
waaaaay too much confidential data on them & not sure how much I trust the iOS wipe functionality
@voretaq7 lol
you a secret agent?
@JoelESalas I'll puppetize you!!
18:25
why are all rumor photos of such fucking absurdly terrible quality?
@David probably because they get saved/re-shared so much
yay for lossy file formats!

Q: How do I figure out my public hostname?

WMRKameleonI am setting up my hMailserver-software and I am being asked about the public hostname. Link As you can see above, this is my DNS-setup at the company who provides me the domain. I have the domain, I can set-up DNS via the provider, I have the server, I have hMailserver. How should I contin...

It's like a blind guy leading a seeing eye dog around.
@David I work in healthcare, and I have SSH keys for my personal machines on my phone.
@TheCleaner It's worse...he's using a dynamic (residential) connection.
how can you tell that from what the OP provided?
18:36
@voretaq7 wipe it 5x
problem solved
@David I don't trust the iOS wipe functionality. using it multiple times doesn't make it more trustworthy.
@voretaq7 DoD trusts it
@TheCleaner there was mention of a dynamic DNS service in one of the answers. He said "my IP has been the same for a while"
@David ...yes because the DoD is who I want to emulate on matters of information security
also, whoever buys your phone probably doesnt even know what SSH is
you sound like you're a bit over-paranoid
18:39
Past events lead directly to present paranoia.
Same reason I bash the crap out of hard drives when I'm done with them.
meh
your loss
@voretaq7 The question is whether or not Apple implemented a NIST method.
the hundred bucks I'm losing out on by the time I scrap a phone isn't that great a loss
Damn, I read that starred IOS_version_history comment and got excited, thinking it'd be the version history of Cisco IOS :(
2
@voretaq7 Wiping flash ram properly is something you just kind of have to trust the device about and your paranoia seems justified. Hard drives you really can wipe quite thoroughly with a single pass of zeros.
18:43
@freiheit smashing them makes me feel better!
crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=3100E467A5CA7304 this is expensive ...I shudder to imagine how much "top-end" ECC memory is
@NathanC that is kinda pricey
I guess RAM prices went up again
just think... 50 years ago you would be paying $411,041,792 per meg
Yikes...
but yeah, prices have been trending up a bit the last few months
18:50
Gah, no wonder M$ needs distributors for licensing. I'm trying (and failing) to wrap my head around the whole CAL licensing.
If I have a backup domain controller (runs AD, DNS, DHCP) do I need CALs for each user?
I hope not because that's like...$4000+
@NathanC just say no... and if anyone ever says anything, just tell em in court that the licensing is so confusing, that you though you were doing the right thing
2
I was thinking no anyway because there won't be any terminal services on the machine (a given seeing how it's a domain controller)
But still, a single license is $1029 according to the guide ...crazy.
@NathanC Maybe I'm ghetto, but I'd just reuse the license.
@NathanC cals are usually per-user, the number of servers you have don't matter.
@ewwhite I want to so we don't have to drop money on a license, but that wouldn't be legal afaik
@Zoredache Yeah I was reading more about it ...it makes more sense now.
19:03
@voretaq7 iphones sell for $300+ in good condition
=[
I ordered some parts off eBay from Bulgaria. Seller shipped (tracking number shows Bulpost received package and "prepared" shipment to USPS). USPS never received. Now the seller sends me that USPS.com shows my package as delivered to Kansas (check USPS.com myself, nothing has changed, not delivered, not received from Bulpost). WTF?? Why would a seller provide false information when they did nothing wrong?!
What do you guys think about that SanDisk sale at Amazon today? (For the SSD's in particular.) I haven't been keeping up with this stuff lately, but it seems good..
@NathanC Just run Samba4. grins
@AaronCopley Never used a sandisk drive before but the pricing doesn't look too bad. I am still wishing that 1TB crucial drive would get back in stock.
@Zoredache 4.5 stars... but I realize those are Amazon reviews and that can be "iffy" on tech products.
@David really? Who the fuck would pay the NEW price for a USED phone?!
19:09
@voretaq7 No contract?
@voretaq7 FreeBSD 9.0 is the first release that can build "world" with Clang, and includes Clang in the base system, but it's not the default. And there's a multi-page wiki article on hot to get clang to build world, it's not just --WITH_CLANG or anything simple.
@David Yea, I sold my iPhone 4 to a co-worker when I upgraded to the iPhone 5 without looking at what they were going for. I gave it to him for $50. D'oh!
@ChrisS really? I thought the 9.0 was because they switched the default for "world"
I kinda agree that it's lame to bump the major number if that's not the case
though there is other under-the-hood stuff in the disk subsystem (CAM-ATA)
@AaronCopley Meh; pricing doesn't look that much better than usual... I expect about $1/GB. If I was in the market for memory I'd buy, but I'm not going to buy anything I don't need at those prices.
@voretaq7 True, there's a lot going on. Just feel like a lot of incremental improvements, worthy of a minor number.
@ChrisS well some idiot decided to switch to two-digit version numbers...
19:13
Also, see the iSCSI grant? FreeBSD's getting in-kernel iSCSI target/init in the next few months.
@ChrisS Thanks. I'm not going to spend money I shouldn't right now, then. I have too much home improvement stuff to do this Summer to buy computer parts.
@ChrisS yeah - I'll actually be able to build storage engines with FreeBSD now!
Like trying to get grass to grow in the backyard. This is probably going to turn into a 3-year battle that ends with me buying sod. :/
@AaronCopley Grass is hard
so is sod for that matter - you can't just roll it out, you need to prepare the dirt under it.
@AaronCopley That wouldn't help a domain controller :P
19:16
just make your backyard into a big sandbox. As soon as you try something where you don't want grass to grow, it will grow.
@voretaq7 Yea, the builder put sod out front and it is amazing. The backyard was seed. Some shitty fast growing garbage that's growing super patchy. But it's all clay and rock and I'm even having trouble over-seeding.
urgh
why does gmail not detect blatant spam?!
@AaronCopley front yards are also better for sod than back yards (you probably spend more time in your back yard walking around and stuff)
@NathanC Maybe after another decade of development. :)
what I'd do in your case is get a few yards of topsoil, level things out a bit, then use some of that "grows fucking anywhere" grass seed
(the kind you see on TV where it grows on top of a brick)
19:20
@voretaq7 True... I just want even coverage of something green back there before my son is running around playing in a dust bowl / mud pit. It doesn't need to be award winning or any thing like that.
Zoysia is a genus of creeping grasses native to southeast and east Asia (north to China and Japan) and Australasia. These species, commonly called zoysia or zoysiagrass, are found in coastal areas or grasslands. The genus is named after the Austrian botanist Karl von Zois. Species *Zoysia japonica Steud. *Zoysia macrantha Desv. *Zoysia macrostachya Franch. & Sav. *Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. *Zoysia minima (Colenso) Zotov *Zoysia pauciflora Mez *Zoysia sinica Hance *Zoysia tenuifolia Willd. ex Thiele Hybrids 1. *Zoysia 'Emerald' (Zoysia japonica × Zoysia matrella) 2. Empire Zoysia 3.El...
there's always that
"green" may vary, and you have to thatch & top-dress it every year or two
@voretaq7 Yea, I was thinking I am going about this all wrong. I need to draw out a plan. We haven't done the deck yet, so I need to figure that out and stop wasting effort on that area.
@voretaq7 WhyTF is that guy's yard so lumpy??
@AaronCopley I'm assuming that's constructed landscaping
@AaronCopley hemorrhoids
Zoysia grass is "interesting" in that if you give it rolling hills of dirt like that it just sort of covers everything.
19:24
@AaronCopley thats where he buries the bodies.
I've seen it grow over rocks.
@voretaq7 I don't know why you would landscape those lumps into it because fuck drainage. I guess if you don't want the neighbor practicing his short game on your lawn it would be useful.
Hah @ hemorrhoids and buried bodies.
@AaronCopley drainage shouldn't be a problem in any kind of soil Zoysia's going to be happy growing in...
@voretaq7 can you bin this please, it's shit; serverfault.com/q/512930/1435
@voretaq7 Ahhh... Ok, good to know. We were thinking about doing a rain garden to collect and use run off water, too. (Added benefit of less grass to mow.)
19:32
@Chopper3 I'm trying to figure out what he's asking
@voretaq7 if you have to do that then it's kinda bad
@Adrian Hi, I reached out to you several days ago regarding Senior DevOps System Engineer positions with The Walt Disney Company in both our Glendale, CA and Seattle, WA offices and I wanted to see if you would be interested in learning more about the opportunities. To refresh your memory, these positions are within our Disney Technology Solutions and Services group, supporting the web presence of The Walt Disney Company.
This was the top Google result. I read it and STILL don't know what he is trying to do. arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/10/…
@AaronCopley A cursory look at the Windows Storage Spaces FAQ answers your question.
etc. etc. etc. from my comment :)
My understanding of Storage Spaces is essentially "kind of like LVM and Software RAID had a bastard love child"
but I'm not a Windows guy
It's ZFS!!!
19:41
it's essentially software RAID
just ...."marketized"
@voretaq7 I see. So, it might be nice for more complicated environments but replacing a simple two disk RAID1 mirror?
@voretaq7 Me either.
From what I've read, storage spaces has a nasty habit of deciding not to work anymore
Usually when replacing a defective disk (which is the whole point!)
Free pointz!!!

Q: How effective is LSI CacheCade SSD storage tiering?

ewwhiteLSI offers their CacheCade storage tiering technology, which allows SSD devices to be used as read and write caches to augment traditional RAID arrays. Other vendors have adopted similar technologies; HP SmartArray controllers have read cache-only SmartCache. Adaptec has MaxCache... Not to menti...

(bountied)
@AaronCopley From my limited understanding I'd use it the same way I use geom_mirror on FreeBSD ("This machine is not worth the extra money for a RAID controller, but I want RAID redundancy on the hard drives").
But Windows has had software RAID for years without "Storage Spaces." Unless this is just a superset of that legacy feature, I don't know why you would over complicate it.
19:44
@AaronCopley because this is new, and new is better? :)
@ewwhite 50? Cheap bugger
@voretaq7 Inspired by envy of ZFS, half-a$$'d as you'd expect of a Microsoft First Try
@ChrisS it doesn't include the filesystem layer though - it's more like they JUST NOTICED LVM IS A THING
@voretaq7 I suppose so.
19:49
@ChrisS Is this the first try? I thought storage spaces was what came after the 'drive extender' tech in home server.
@ewwhite FREEEEEE POI... oh wait I have to know stuff. Dammit this sysadmin thing is harrrrrrd!!
Hey @WesleyDavid
@ChrisS ok, for some reason I find that hilarious :)
@WesleyDavid!
19:53
@Zoredache I suppose this might be the second try... Still, dare not use in production until V3 SP1
YOU WERE ON INFOSEC REACTIONS
@WesleyDavid teh fuk?
@voretaq7 That was no fun. My harbles were aching for days.
@MattBear speciul kitteh. Like @WesleyDavid
@voretaq7 How'd you...how'd you know?
19:54
@ChrisS now, let me teach the bear to recognize Mark Shuttelworth...
@NathanC WTF?
@DennisKaarsemaker looks more like theres fishing line or somthing around its neck and its being dragged off
@WesleyDavid harbles?
hair(y)balls
It's a good Monday --> imgur.com/BOcVPaH
hehe interesting fact... what is the treatment for ingestion of anti-freeze?
@MattBear ice?
@DennisKaarsemaker bourbon
19:57
@MattBear Funny, that's also the treatment for a shit day at work.
@MattBear citation?
I like this gif
@Zoredache I didn't think you were a big enough dick to be a Wikipedia editor.
8. Ethylene glycol

It's in your car as antifreeze. It's cheap. It looks so damn simple. It has a moderate toxicity level, however, the sweet taste can make one easily surpass that boundary, leading the ethylene glycol to be metabolized into the more dangerous oxalic acid. Keep it away from animals and pets, as they are likely to lap up the liquid as a food source. If you do ingest a large amount of ethylene glycol, death is slow, knocking out organ systems systematically over the course of 72 hours. The treatment is administration of grain ethanol, as the ethanol competes with ethylene gly
20:00
@ScottPack I am not, I just wanted more details.
@MattBear yes, the treatment for ingesting ethylene glycol (and methanol) is to get you drunk on good, proper ethanol.
@voretaq7 Getting drunk to survive? It's like Christmas!
2
@MattBear While bourbon might work, I think I might go straight for the Everclear if I only had 72 hours to live anyway.
@voretaq7 also the treatment for all the rest of lifes problems
In speaking of which, work day's done/
20:04
Everclear is the brand name of a colorless, unflavored, distilled beverage bottled at two different high strengths: 151-proof and 190-proof, meaning respectively 75.5% and 95% alcohol by volume. It is distilled by Luxco (formerly the David Sherman Company). Everclear is distilled from corn (maize) and is nearly identical in taste to fine-grade unflavored vodka, although it contains more alcohol. Both Everclear and fine-grade vodka are very low in congeners, which are agents that develop during fermentation or are added later and that lend flavor and color to whiskeys and other liquors. ...
@WesleyDavid @freiheit I found your dream bike at the race Saturday.
@ewwhite @WesleyDavid should just come to NY and steal a citibike
the machines are leaving them randomly unlocked, so that means they're free, right?!
@voretaq7 I'll be in NY tomorrow. Maybe I'll try one!
@ewwhite goooood luck!
@ewwhite make sure to remove the seat, bikes are a lot funner to ride that way!
20:12
@voretaq7 why do you say?
@ewwhite Novara Randonee isn't a bad bike, but it'd be really silly to get when I already have a Surly LHT...
@voretaq7 I heard the software is run on some embedded FreeBSD crap...
so... is patch tuesday EVERY tuesday?
@ewwhite IDK what it's run on, but the software is obviously shit
I blame DevOps and Agile Development
@voretaq7 2nd Tuesday of the month
20:17
@ewwhite Oh! Oh! What is it?
@Iain I'm only asking because every time I start my Win8 VM it tells me I have MOAR PATCHES
^^ I got to ride that strange beast on Sunday
@ewwhite Is nice I like.
20:19
@voretaq7 I'm thinking about it, honestly.
THe coming to NYC, not stealing bikes.
@voretaq7 I haven't been near W8 yet and from what I've heard I see no reason to go near it
@Iain My Win7 VM does it too
@freiheit wtf is this
@voretaq7 ok, so you don't start them very often then
@Iain I've had this one on since the last patch tuesday
and it still told me I had 12 updates to install
it's not fair. I just want to boot the damn thing so I can use my vmware console!
20:24
@David It's a titanium hardtail 29er mountain bike with a Pinion transmission, belt drive and disc brakes. Made specifically for a show.
Hello
@freiheit what the...?
636% more gears
636% more complicated and prone to failure!
@David No, not 636% more gears, just 636% range of gear ratios... That Novara Randonee that @ewwhite linked to has a 582% range of gear ratios.
@David It's a very low maintenance bike... whether that transmission is really more complicated and more prone to failure seems like something that'll be figured out over the next few years...
Moar gearz!
@ewwhite Mechanical Monkey!
20:38
@voretaq7 That's racist!!
@freiheit thats bad ass, it has a transmission?
@ewwhite You could try calling up Mark at Paragon to see what he'd sell you that bike for... I'll bet he'd be happy to recoup the ~$7k parts and materials cost, now that the show is over... ;)
and a belt drive... thats gotta be smooth riding
@freiheit naw, I threw my $10k into the new bike.
20:39
Anyone at/watching TechEd coverage?
@MattBear Most bicycles have a transmission. The chain, gears, derailers, etc are a transmission.
@freiheit I mean an enclosed transmission
@MDMarra been doing funeral stuff all day, do you have a link?
@MattBear Really don't notice the difference. Big advantage of belt drives on bikes is that they're low maintenance and lube free.
No. I was hoping someone else did. They unveiled server 2012 R2
20:41
And since @MDMarra isn't returning my calls, I'm forced to do menial Windows work myself.
Supposedly it has some crazy file system features like beefed up dedupe and replication
@ewwhite I have 0 missed calls from you!
@ewwhite I'm preparing for a FreeBSD 8->9 upgrade. Wanna trade? :)
@ewwhite at first glance, i thought it said auschwitz somewhere
@MattBear Come to think of it, enclosed transmissions are common enough, too, but in the hub of the rear wheel instead of in the bottom bracket (between the pedals). It's some crazy new thing that I have trouble believing will really catch on
@David that would be about right for Windows administration :)
very few admins survive...
20:42
@voretaq7 Never... weren't you supposed to come work in the city?
s/come/avoid/
@MDMarra oh snap
@DennisKaarsemaker LIRR is a soul-sucking commute
SQL Server 2014?
@Cole yeah. I was "evaluating" a clients broken AD all day haha. Didn't get to see the live feeds
@Cole no clue
20:44
@MDMarra speaking of that
My boss was like "Should we call a contractor to look at our stuff?"
Hey, I just got a good question from one of our NOC people... Does anyone here have experience using NIC bonding with Windows? (HP ProLiant servers running W2003/W2008R2)
So I said "maybe" - but if he's down for having someone doing it remotely - would you be interested?
@ewwhite I've done it
@MDMarra with the HP shit?
@Cole sure
20:47
@MDMarra our last contractor was an idiot - I'd rather have someone I know that knows his shit to look at it. Japan is still fucked up - no idea why
@ewwhite isn't it just the intel or Broadcom utilities? Or does HP have an even more special tool?
HP has a special tool
HP is a special tool.
I suppose it's easy enough...
No clue then. It must just manipulate the same stuff the Broadcom tool does. The OS has no teaming
@Cole fun
20:48
Say what?!?
I saw a tombstoned DC in an empty forest root today. That was a laugher
@ewwhite it's soooooo harrrrrrrrd :(
@ewwhite TEAM ALL THE NICS!!!!!
@MDMarra haha.
@voretaq7 that's what she said.
20:49
miimon, mode=4, linux=sux, I know, I know.
All this crap with my AD environment is refreshing my memory at least.
In the last week I've seen a tombstoned DC, a triangular one-way replication cycle, a corrupt FRS jet database, and a corrupt jet AD database index
3
@MDMarra wanna fix one of mine?
@Cole how's the NT going?
this job is keeping me on my toes.
@ewwhite sure
20:50
@DennisKaarsemaker not gone yet.
I'll give you 1 x MDMarra hour for it.
@MDMarra That's good though!
@ewwhite what's the issue
@MDMarra Here you go...

Q: Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

ewwhiteI have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks.
