12:03 PM
back later. I'm going to sit in a lab for a few hours.

12:18 PM
@Dan @Adrian always tells me I need to date older women so I guess I probably should.

Dan
@Cole Theres nothing inherently wrong with young people, but drama tends to decrease as one gets older. No rules to these things, though

@TomO'Connor "gigolo" ?
A gigolo is a male escort or social companion who is supported by a woman in a continuing relationship, often living in her residence or having to be present at her beck and call. The gigolo is expected to provide companionship, to serve as a consistent escort with good manners and social skills, and often, to serve as a dancing partner as required by the woman in exchange for the support (which is contrary to typical norms). Many gifts such as expensive clothing and an automobile to drive may be lavished upon him. The relationship may include sexual services as well, when he also would b...

@Dan My past few exs have been 22-23.

@Dan I think mostly the main difference is whether they have lived on their own and had a job or not. Someone who's 21 but has lived and held a job for a few years is likely to be a lot more mature than someone who's 25 and has only been to school and college and never had a job or a real place of their own.

@JennyD Sadly, most women around here between 21-35 have only been to school/college and still live at home.
I started my career at 21 and moved out at 22.

12:28 PM
@Cole When I was 23 I briefly dated a guy who was 22. But then I'd been working for 5 years and had a place of my own; he was still in uni and living at home. There were so many things in my life that he just didn't understand; I felt like he was ten years younger instead of just one...

Dan
@JennyD Oh yeah, it was a huge oversimplification. Life experience if everything, and in terms of age gap, I maintain that being on the same page is the most important. One of my exes was at Uni while I was at work and that just didn't work out at all, because we were just in different places. I was becoming commercially aware and worrying about customers and contracts, her Uni mates were still planning on changing the world

@Chopper3 having watched the Battlefield 4 Multiplayer "Best Moments" trailer, and the Commander trailer, I'm quite excited for BF4 now.

Dan
@tombull89 Do I need a new console for BF4, or is it Xbox360?
Oh you lot are PC, aren't you

I started working when I was 17, part time after school. Got my first full-time job when I was 18, after high school + 1 year post-high-but-not-uni studies. Didn't go to uni until I was 25.

Dan
@JennyD Ditto, except I never bothered with the Uni part

12:29 PM
@Dan 360, PS3, One, PS4 and PC for BF4
I'm hoping my graphics card will cope.

@JennyD That's what I'm constantly running into. I've been working FT since 17, started working 2 months after turning 16.

Battlefield has always been on PC for me.

@Dan I only took one term, though at half speed while I was working full time, but it was enough to get me my first sysadmin gig

So I've been working FT for almost 10 years already.
Fuck, I'm getting old.
@Dan you has Xbox360?

Dan
@Cole I do

12:31 PM
@tombull89 You has Steam?

Dan
Sometimes it even gets turned on

@Cole I call your 10 and raise you a 20.

@Dan should add me: iLLuminatte

So I have an LSI RAID controller flooding with error messages when we do a DB import.

@Cole I haz steam.

12:31 PM
@tombull89 You should add me: iLLuminatte on Steam as well. Think I'm just going to buy a newer graphics card instead of a console.
Except Destiny looks so bad ass.

Dan
@Cole Done, herm4nd

@Dan sweet, I shall accept it when I get home.
Do you play Halo by any chance?

What in the hell would cause an analog line to show busy all the time when it isn't in use!?

@Cole I spent the best part of £200 on a graphics card last summer, so I hope it would run BF4 okay.

But it's coming out for 360, so.

Dan
12:33 PM
@Cole Pretty much just BF3 and Forxa

@tombull89 which card?
@Dan dang - I play(ed) BF3 on PC.

Dan
:(

I suck at all FPS' on console - except Halo.

@Cole XFX Radeon 7870
Full specs of my machine at tombullock.co.uk/gaming-pc

Dan
How much would one pay for a great gaming PC, now

12:35 PM
@Dan I built mine (except the case) for about ~$450
maybe $500

Good? £500. Great? £600-800, I guess.

Dan
Mm, not too bad I suppose - does that get me everything except monitor?

@Dan: depends on what you build, really ;p

Dan
I'm not sold on the idea, but I'm really not feeling the new XBox
@JourneymanGeek I know, but you get my drift.

Core i5 3470, 16GB DDR3, nVidia 550 Ti, 240GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 700W PSU, ASRock H77 mobo
Ok so maybe it was more like ~$650

12:37 PM
Holy shit. My machine I linked above cost me around £830, excluding CPU and secondary HDD.

@tombull89: british prices are high

That's everything, though, mouse, keyboard, screen, speakers, SSD.

@tombull89 I paid $367 for the Core i5, mobo and memory

I think mine should add up to around a grand.
(but really nice keyboard and mouse, great big hulking case)

$110 for the video card, I think the PSU was about ~$60-$70, SSD I got on sale for cheap, I think ~$120ish, 1TB HDD was on sale to for $60

12:38 PM
and I didn't buy my SSD

Dan
See, I still like the idea of playing on the TV
So I really don't know if a PC is going to add up. Can't see me sitting upstairs by myself

I have a Logitech Wave for a keyboard at home - sucks for gaming lol, and a Logitech Performance MX Mouse.

@Dan HDMI out to the TV?

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, I was thinking controllers

roccat kone XTD for a mouse, razer blackwidow ultimate from my last computer

12:39 PM
@Dan can use an Xbox controller no problem usually on PC.

I have a logitech controller somewhere around here

One of the USB ones.

@Cole recently replaced my mouse/keyboard at home because wireless SUCKS for gaming.

Dan
@Cole Yeah, but then I'm going to get done over even moreso than on the XBox

got one of these, cheap, but I've not used it yet ;p

12:40 PM
@tombull89 yeah I'd like to get a nice mechanical keyboard
Not sure what mouse I'd go with.
I tend to like bigger mice.

I don't know what I'll upgrade next on my machine. 8GB of RAM is enough, and the CPU, while a couple of years old, is overclocked from 2.8GHz to 3.3GHz and runs fine.

I surprisingly have fairly large hands for being such a small dude.
You know what they say about that!

@Cole Very pleased with the Razer BlackWidow Expert I got recently.

That I'm completely not proportionate!

Dan
Just realised I know fuck all about desktops

12:42 PM
I suppose is true, big hands and feet but 5'3

@Cole: I've got pretty big hands, I've had decent luck with both the standard logitech shape (I used to use a G300 which I moved over to the shared desktop)

@Dan It was the graphics cards that threw me the most.

Oh, that razer one my brother has is ginormous

SO. MANY. CARDS.

@tombull89: I'm like that with AMD gear ;p

12:43 PM
8.5 - 9 in Mens (So 8-8.5 in UK I believe)

Dan
@tombull89 I was looking at Alienware (I know, just curious!) and it comes with a 7.2k SATA drive. My first thought was "Nooooo....oh, wait, yeah I guess that's fine"

@Dan SSD or GTFO

nvidia, I can guess. I just get something with a GTX in front, and a number bigger than 50 behind
@Cole: some times, big disks are a good thing ;p

@Dan @Chopper3 got an Alienware last year, I believe, he had issues with the disk in it.

Dan
@Cole I do concur, but I can't see it making a huge difference in gameplay

12:44 PM
I'm a huge nvidia guy. Can't get into ATi

@Dan: 7200k is like the minimum ;p
@Cole: same here.

@Dan The game loads faster.

Dan
Ooooh </sarcasm>

;)

@JourneymanGeek This is why I have a 1TB 7.2K drive.

also, borderlands 2.

12:45 PM
@Dan DO NOT MOCK ME.

GOTTA HAVE MY OOZY FLUIDS SPILLING ALL OVER THE PLACE
2

I have a 250GB SSD as primary for Windows and a 2TB 7.2k as a secondary for other Steam games.

@Cole: ugh, I need a new one
I had my eyes on the new seagate 4tb, but with my luck with seagates this month...
250gb SSD as a primary, 500gb HDD as secondary

@JourneymanGeek I put all my VMs from Workstation on the 1TB SSD

oh, 40gb fujitsu notebook drive for linux ;p

12:46 PM
Is there really any need to upgrade these days if you have a first gen i7 or i5 build? I have one with 8 gigs of ram.. all I needed to do was upgrade the GPU to something modest and new, plus a new SSD.. all done

a 1TB SSD? Jesus.

@Cole: 1tb... ssd?
@pauska: honestly? no

except the fun of building something new..

actually, with ram maxed out, my old c2d would handle most things I threw at it.
@pauska: thats the big thing ;p
(actually thats why I build electronics kits sometimes, and have an audio system I periodically tweak)

The reason I got rid of my old board is that it would only handle 8GB RAM with 2x RAM slots.

12:49 PM
My other desktop is shared, and I've never quite gotten this whole gaming laptop thing ;p

Q: LSI RAID controller errors on DB import - How to troubleshoot?

ewwhiteWe're running an import of a database dump on an Oracle system - (RHEL 5.9, 2.6.18-348.6.1.el5). The import does not complete, eventually erroring-out with: ORA-15080: synchronous I/O operation to a disk failed WARNING: failed to write mirror side 1 of virtual extent 248 logical extent 0 of file...

though...
drool
basically ticks off all the boxes for me as far as laptops go ;p

Dan
I'd be almost tempted with a gaming laptop but it's such an insane cost premium

@JourneymanGeek Costs an obscene amount of money though

@tombull89: it does
XD
(but god, so pretty)

Dan
12:52 PM
ANd paying for OS licenses I don't need irritates me, too

and I still wouldn't game on it ;p
@Dan: I don't mind the stock OS personally

Dan
@JourneymanGeek It's the paying for it I'm against :D

@Dan If you buy a machine through Novatech, you can get it OS-free (and you pay £100-odd less because of it).

XD
ask for a refund?

Dan
Most won't
But yeah, maybe

12:54 PM
I'm researching this Oracle issue and came across this nifty blog.

@ewwhite looks like an ant having a seizure.

...
@ewwhite: cue everyone's cat attacking the screen

but it's a cute visual

@JourneymanGeek whoops I meant regular HDD

@ewwhite So is oracle the debil or is it just oracle DB?

12:59 PM
@Travis Oracle.

we're looking at an oracle ERP now

@Travis $$$$
How big is your company again?

we're looking at an oracle ERP now

Dan
@ewwhite "For performance reasons, only use one track on each platter of a disk"

we're looking at an oracle ERP now

1:01 PM
heh

we're looking at an oracle ERP now

Lots of universities in the US are build on Oracle ERP systems
Specifically, Sungard HE's Banner
The worst part about Oracle is that you have to employ Oracle DBAs :)

@MDMarra and they're usually dicks.
at least here, anyways.

1:16 PM
True to their word...Meraki sent me a free cloud/butt managed AP w/ 3 year license. Got it only a week after the webinar! meraki.cisco.com/freeap

Lovely, this Apple juice tastes like Playdoh
@TheCleaner Nothing better than Butt WiFi

Sure there is....*Free* butt wifi

@TheCleaner that's how you gets viruses.
Apple juice why you taste so disgusting. I had high hopes for you.

We've had our wifi shots

I have to say, it's been awesome not having my phone blowing up with texts.

1:21 PM
@TomO'Connor That was interesting. I've been considering getting gps recorders for my cats, to see how far they go.

I love cats.
haha Hermie chasing off a rival is funny.

I love that some of this crap is built into these APs...talk about easy to setup

Kinda cool to see the "Cat vision"

built-in SMS. That's pretty neat to be honest.

@TheCleaner Wow that is nice.
I forget what we use here.

1:28 PM
@Cole $80 mil

@Travis youch!
How big is the company/what do you guys manufacture?

@Cole ~100 employees, ~35 are "system" users and we do film and foil products
@Cole All of the ERP's from Microsoft up through Oracle were in the $400k range

@Travis Yeah Dynamics/Oracle ERP probably are overkill.

@Cole Our current "ERP" and I use that term loosely costed about $70k since we've had it.

I'd look at the Sage products - Do not look at QAD
Syspro sucks too.
SAP is way too much as well.

1:30 PM
@Cole Sage won't work for us according to the vendor because of how difficult our inventory stuff is

@Travis really?
That's weird.
Find a new vendor.
My previous director worked for a company that implemented Sage - they did lots of customization.
Curious to how you do inventory now.

@Travis You need Produce Pro!!!

The bigger manufacturing companies I've worked for (current job, UVEX and Roto Frank) all use SAP. Smaller ones use Syspro, SAGE & MFG Pro
IIRC Syspro is written in COBOL
At least it was in 2008-2009.
@Travis are you guys a Lean shop? I'd assume so.
I know way too much about manufacturing.

I guess inventory is a bad term. We're not a lean shop at all. We have so much inventory bloat it's not even funny.

@Travis ouch, no bueno sir.

1:36 PM
We don't manufacture per se either.

@Travis resell?

A mixture of resell and a slitting operation. We take raw film and cut it down to smaller rolls. Foil we rewind into smaller rolls or stamp pans
The problem is with how we sub items and come up with different things. I don't honestly understand it all and had the CFO explained it to the Sage guy

So more like repackaging the product for consumer use?

Kind of

Interesting.

1:38 PM
We'll take a 54" roll of film and cut it into 2, 24's and a 6"

Sometimes I think I should go into the ERP business. Then I realize I already hate my life enough.

Then we'll sell the 24's as a packaging or pallet wrap film and the 6" as a small "hand film"
Our Canadian counterpart told us to try Navision
but when we looked at Dynamics I asked the vendor and he said it definitely wouldn't handle us and the way we do things

oh wtf why

Q: esxi and server 2008 on the same physical server

bouhI want to use the same physical server to user esxi 4 and server 2008 or 2012 how we can proceed to this installation? physical server has 2 hard drive in raid1 whith OS must be first installed?

@tombull89 That's legitimately funny as hell!

@Dan Gave you an upvote lol

1:46 PM
Just tried it. How odd.

Dan
@tombull89 Who are these people

@Dan Someone who wants to dual-boot ESXi and Windows Server, apparently.

@tombull89 Huh? Where is this question?

1:49 PM
@tombull89 Thanks.

Isn't ESX 4 old now?

Dan
Old, but far from dead

Apparently not the only one that has done it... communities.vmware.com/thread/274539?start=0&tstart=0

@tombull89 very

This place makes me so happy.

so he is saying that he wants both esxi and server to run at the same time?!

@Travis I think so.
People are dumb.

@Dan you accidentally a letter

Q: Datastore cluster with vCenter and 2 VMFs datastores

JochenI have a vCenter setup with 2 esxi hosts. Both hosts (dedicated servers) have their own datastore (vmfs) connected to their harddrives. I'd now like to setup a datastore cluster, however the setup is complaining about both hosts not being able to see each other's datastore. Is there a way I can...

@ewwhite you always get to the VMware questions before I do.
Ninja.

Dan
2:11 PM
@tombull89 I accidentally your face

@Dan I accidentally your mother.
2

@tombull89 - have you seen all the questions here about W2k3? :) ESX 4.0 initially came out in 2009...that's like yesterday to half the IT world.

Dan
@tombull89 Your mother accidentally'd you.

@Dan but I can computer!
(I was expecting a "my mum is dead" comeback, so well played)

Dan
Haha, I was going to but it felt too easy!
I'm making a settings panel for my app, and I'm so tempted to leave it looking like this

2:15 PM
One more reason to get a PS4! Awesome...

@TheCleaner what the fucking fuck...?

Octodad man!

@Dan What's your app? I'm currently trying to make an app for all the scripts I've written for the Hell Desk operators. Because running scripts is HARD!
@TheCleaner haha I've seen this before.

Dan
@Cole It's a shell replacement for thin clients that provides a browser window for them to connect into web pased portals

@Dan ah

2:19 PM
My boss decided to take DNS into his own hands last night. Long story short this has been a terrible morning.

@Cole HELL desk?

@mossy !!!!! you haven't been around in awhile
@Jacob yes, because help desk is hell on earth.

I come in randomly.

@Jacob Clearly you've never worked one.

@mossy DNS is like C4, it's incredibly stable until you play with it.
5
@Tanner No, not for internal users, but I imagine will end up doing so soon :(

2:21 PM
Actually, now that I think about it - I've been doing tons of work on fixing monitoring, automation and improvement of current processes/better documentation.

@Jacob Our ISP is a local uni and it takes all day for changes to reach us.

@Jacob It's terrible.

Guess that's good for the resume though.

I walked around to every computer and set up a socks proxy just so we can use our CMS

2:22 PM
@mossy U of MI?

GVSU

I've had two days in a row of solid ~8 hours of sleep.
It's a miracle.

@Tanner I'm hoping to get a student job at my uni

Oh TomTom

Dan
Anyone know RegEx good?

2:23 PM
He seems to love old stuff. He also talks of Server 2008, which is 2 generations back. — TomTom 15 mins ago

Dan
Actually, I should be able to do this

In response to:

A: esxi and server 2008 on the same physical server

ColeYou want to install ESXi 4, and then create a Windows VM on the ESXi host. It makes absolutely no sense to dual boot. Also, ESXi 4 is relatively old now. If you're just using ESXi with no licensed features, I suggest going with the latest version: ESXi 5.1

that statement was in perfect english... and not rage filled.

2:24 PM
Oh that's just what i need. Some RegEx to make my morning.

@JourneymanGeek because he...he agreed with me.
MIRACLE
Better go play the lottery.

@Cole: WHAT HAS SOMEONE DONE WITH THE REAL TOMTOM?

@Cole zomg 2008 sooooooo old!!!1

Even better: NO TYPOS!

@tombull89: first thing I noticed? ;p
maybe he stopped having to run his website off his phone?

2:25 PM
@Tanner lulz right? 2008 is our NEWEST servers. (Not even R2)

@JourneymanGeek No, he ripped someone to shreds earlier

? 2 gens back?

2:26 PM
@TheCleaner yeah 2012, 2008 R2, 2008

@Jacob: in flawed engligh

@TheCleaner 2012---- R2-----08

oh plus this dude is from New Jersey - fuck no.

@Cole How have ya been

ah...yeah I guess...when I hear 08 I only think of R2.

2:27 PM
Wait what the bloody hell is going on with TomTom? There's a number of recent comments of his with no typos.

@mossy had some ups and downs. I think I'm on the up-swing now though. you?
@tombull89 Maybe he stopped using speech to text
My sister just typoed to her friend - instead of "lol do you want her there?" to "lol do you want herpes?"

This this whole getting a parallel to usb cable working in linux ...could be going better

Hooray, Dell's coming to fix my laptop

@Cole snerk

@Cole Same.

2:31 PM
The radio just played "Where is the love tonight" from The Lion King. This was all I could think of:

Spending my free time learning PHP so i can make cool stuff.

@tombull89 so disturbed right now.

Turns out it's more complicated than you'd think.

@ChrisS whatever that may be, is blocked here.

2:33 PM
o0

@Cole Does that agree with your crappy filter?

Love Louis CK
Yes it does

I hate corporate filters that try to keep people productive.

@ChrisS right.
I can find tons of ways to not be productive.

Like chatting on here @Cole? :P

2:35 PM
@NathanC exactly.

Dan
@mossy First language?

@TheCleaner Yes
Someone told me the other day they're getting a Carry Concealed Permit (gun) because the world is becoming a "crazy place". I wasn't in the mood for arguing, but less people die of violence now than at any point in recorded history.

@Dan I use HTML / SCSS at work. I would like to contribute to applications at some point though.
Nothing makes me rage more than front end design.
but yeah PHP is my first /language/.

Dan
@ChrisS Less people or a lesser pecentage?
@mossy Wish I could provide some advice, but just keep playing with it really. Are you following tutorials?

2:45 PM
@Dan percentage - by total number wouldn't fairly represent your likelihood of being a victim of violence.

@Dan Yeah. Trying to figure out the best way to learn all of these functions. It's overwhelming

Dan
@ChrisS Aye, that's what I thought.
@mossy If you can figure out the basic syntax and concepts it's normally a case of Googling what you want to do and seeing if PHP has a function for it

They're "fixing" our parking lot today - repaving. Wish I had known before leaving yesterday, would have been working from home today. Our parking lot is a mess right now.

@mossy php.net is your best friend

I'm really enjoying voke.fm
really good for noobies like me.

2:47 PM
That little search bar at the top can find anything you'd ever want to do with PHP

Yeah...just go to the book preview on amazon and skim through some pages...and that's from 13 years ago...

to your point on violence/safety:

Of course, there's literally hundreds of frameworks that make it do more

PHP is the devil's language

It's also better than shelling out cash for a server that runs ASP.NET
:p
Granted there's others ...python, etc

How do you guys feel about MongoDB?

Dan
2:49 PM
Never used it

@TheCleaner Not sure I like that last quip about free-market capitalism being the end-all to poverty, but otherwise completely agree with the page

In college I coded an inventory system in VB.NET of all things. Ugh...

Dan
@ChrisS I used PHP for years and I found it very difficult to transition to C# properly

@mossy Still really not sure why I'd want to use it.

@ChrisS - it's written from a "right wing" perspective author...so yeah jibs like that are in there too.

2:51 PM
@TheCleaner Reminds me of Fox News - agree with 95% of the story, then they say something dumb at the end "$terrible_disaster is because of Democrats" or something.

I'm actually a conservative, but it always bugs me when I see judgmental things like "why don't we split up the country then and you can keep your liberals, illegal aliens, welfare recips, etc.?" I still contend we need an alien invasion to unite us all aka Independence Day. It's still being judgmental, but at least we are judging aliens... :)

@mossy MongoDB- For when you need SPEEED and don't give a flying fuck about your data.
@TheCleaner NO

@Jacob - I will leave you with an alien poking out of your abdomen...don't think I won't! ;)

User: WHY IS MY COMPUTER CHECKING FOR JEWS?!? Me: Shit.
