1:00 PM
She's one of my ex's good friends since middle school. My girlfriend asked how I would be about seeing my ex at the wake. I was like... "It isn't about me, or her it's about <my friend>"

Exactly!

I could careless about my ex being there because it isn't about either of us.

Dan
@Cole What a peculiar attitude. It wasn't a funeral but I went to a reunion and picked my ex up
(Mind you, it was a bit weird going an exes house and picking them up years after breaking up)

Oh fucking fantastic
 CORPDC4           07d.04h:30m:54s    6 /  33   18  (1722) The RPC server is unavailable.

 CORPDC5           05d.18h:08m:58s   12 /  12  100  (1722) The RPC server is unavailable.

Dan
@Cole That's really harsh, though :( I hate funerals

1:02 PM
I'm 23 and I've never actually been to one.

-_-

Dan
@tombull89 Wow, doing well

@Cole that's the right way to look at it

Will it be weird to see my ex with her new boyfriend? Yes.

Ex for a reason :)

1:03 PM
I had a friend who died from cancer when she was the same age I'm now. She had two kids, 12 years old.
that was the first time I saw a dead person.

My first serious girlfriend/first love died in Sept of last year.
It was a bit hard to go to that wake. I hadn't seen her in 5-6 years.

Dan
@Cole Dude, that really is grim

@Cole My friend who died had been on bad terms with two other mutual friends. I was the one who told them they would need to talk to her soon if they wanted to do it at all, which they did. They are still grateful to me for giving them that chance.
@Cole She must have been very young

@Dan it was a bit hard to process.
@JennyD 24.

@Cole ouch, that's really hard

1:06 PM
@JennyD So sad.
Yeah, I mean it wasn't a good relationship - but it was still my first serious relationship which lasted 2.5 years.
and still my longest relationship to date
We broke up in 2005.
Now wtf Domain Controller, Y U HAVING PROBLEMS.

When I was in my first year of secondary school we had someone leave at the middle of the school year. We found out years later he'd been killed in a hit-and-run which for a load of 16-17 year old freaked us out a lot

Dan
2 weeks was my shortest relationship, but man, they were a good two weeks

@tombull89 me and said ex had a friend die in a car accident in HS. That was rough.

Husband and me had our 11th wedding anniversary this weekend

Dan
Congrats!

1:09 PM
Thanks!
11 years is definitely not enough.

@JennyD congrats!

When I was in grade school there was a girl in class that stopped coming. When asked they told us she was suffocated to death by her <insert family member>. I swear, like 7 years later I saw that very girl in my high school. Couldn't mistake her face. She was only at school for about a week and never saw her again. Very eerie.

Pretty sure I'll never get married.

@Cole Thanks!

@Travis whoa, creepy.

1:09 PM
My first proper crush moved to australia at the end of my school career, that was weird.

Dan
@tombull89 You must have had an effect!

fuck my life.

@Cole We locked eyes when I first saw her and she looked away and exited. I had that, "I know that person" astonishment but couldn't quite place the face at that very moment

I don't know what happened to these DCs
@Travis totally creepy.

I think it was my brother that told me, "[Name] is moving" - "oh, sure, where to?" - "Australia" - "fml".

Dan
1:10 PM
When I was young (Probably 13 / 14, if that) I had a 'girlfriend' that I met at the swimming baths. We went out a few times and it was going great. Then one day she phoned me up and said her dad told her that she couldn't see me anymore :(

@Dan :D

@Dan aw :(

Dan
@Cole Don't feel bad, I don't even remember her name
2

LOL
Hmmm RPC service is started on both DCs having issues.

@Dan I had something similar, a week-long trip to the isle of wight in 2000 led me to meeting a girl on a beach and for the best part of 11 years we wrote back and forth.

1:13 PM
@MichaelHampton You around?

It kinda fizzed out which was sucky, we're still friends on Facebook though.

Dan
@tombull89 Aw

arg wtf

After seeing friends getting shafted more than staying in a happy relationship I'm convinced it's more luck than anything.

Yeah, I mean my girlfriend is pretty awesome...but something just doesn't feel right for some reason.

1:16 PM
@tombull89 At the risk of sounding like your parents or something - relationships take practice, it's normal to see a lot of them break in your early 20s because people at that age are still learning how to do it

@Cole If RPC is running and not available, I predict a reboot in your near future. :)

@syneticon-dj I just saw your Hyper-V question. Are there no deep analytics tools for that platform?

I was certainly not an easy person to live with at that age; I had lots of expectations and didn't know how to talk about them.

@jscott probs. It's two DCs

@JennyD I know people that got married before they were 25, and it's worked out well.

1:17 PM
One which gets hammered by Lotus Sametime
the other one, the fuck knows what happened

Then again I know more people that it didn't work out for.

@tombull89 my sister has been married since 21. Just celebrated 7 years married with her husband. They've been together since they were 17.

@tombull89 some people learn faster than others

I think my parents would be delighted if I got a girlfriend because then it would mean I'd be likely to move out.

and 3 kids later.

1:18 PM
@Cole Damn, good for her.

I think my mom is convinced I'll never marry
I'm starting to feel the same
Tried to do dcdiag /q @jscott

@Cole My sister got married at 23, to a man she'd been dating for 3-4 years. They got divorced three years back. During that time he'd gone from "likes taking a glass of wine with dinner" to "is mostly always drunk and will use violence against his wife".

I've been in a relationship with a girl for 12 years now. In 12 years a lot has changed. We are still together and looking to get married soon.

Ldap search capability attribute search failed on server CORPDC5, return value = 81
@JennyD my brother in law went through a pretty rough time. He's an (recovering now) alcoholic
Just like my dad, except my dad still is.

@Cole as far as I know the ex-BIL is still drinking. My husband remarked that in the 13 years we've been together, he never saw my BIL sober. Not once.

1:21 PM
Wow.

If it means anything, I'm almost 23 and never had a serious relationship, heh.

lol

@Cole Not that we usually saw him really drunk either, just never completely sober.

@NathanC ditto. Probably the only one in my group of friends, unfortunately.

@NathanC probably better off that way.

@NathanC It means whatever it means to you... but you're far from alone there

Well, it's a work in progress. :P

I think it may have to do with the fact that the CPU is 99% of the 100% pegged on one of the DCs

@Cole That does not sound optimal.

@JennyD I know. That's IBM for you.

1:26 PM
@ewwhite It's Windows... It still comes with all the standard Windows tools/methods, but people are apparently less familiar with those than they should be.

CORPDC4 shows that it's fine with repadmin /showrepl
but has a delta of 7 days
Probably going to need to reboot these whores.

How do you reboot whores? Pull their tampon string?

@Cole I think you should be more respectful to sex workers. Comparing them to Windows servers is just plain mean.
2

@JennyD At least sex workers work :)

Dan
@JennyD I dunno, they'll both fuck you

1:31 PM
@Travis exactly, and they perform what they're hired for

@JennyD they have a lot in common. Both suck, both go down frequently and they need a lot of money.

@Dan yes, but only one in a pleasant way
like saying that vacuumcleaners suck - it's true, but only when it's not.

Dan
@JennyD True that

@ewwhite Hyper-V seems to have nothing to assist further troubleshooting. I am somewhat at a loss - not because I could not find out what the cause is in this case, but because I would like a generic solution where I could set up some monitoring rules.

If all else fails, reboot. If that doesn't work, reboot again. If that doesn't work, a well-placed smack with a hammer might. It may not fix the problem, but it'll release some stress.

1:33 PM
if I update DNS forwarders should I do a clear cache or update server data files?
@NathanC Forgot to say reboot again

@JennyD Thank you for a good laugh this morning lol.

Installing updates 2 of 142 okay this is gonna take a while.

My manager isnt in till 10:30 so I can't reboot

@tombull89 Not on an OC192!

@Cole You're welcome :-)

1:34 PM
My right contact is so dry
I look like I'm crying about Active Directory.

@Cole ALL your DC's are not responding to requests?

@Travis no, Only 2 of 5
One Lotus Sametime points directly at for LDAP lookups. The LDAP lookup it does is super resource heavy.

I don't know so I'm asking...management aside...rebooting 1 at a time of the "failed" ones wouldn't hurt anything would it?
since you have 3 others

@Travis rebooting 5 would
4, probably not no

@Travis If it's not responding, rebooting isn't making things worse anyway

1:35 PM
military intelligence 2.0
I like :)

Spinning up a brand new synology diskstation at my desk. Wheee

@JennyD Good point

LDAP lookups are still working for Sametime, but the RPC server on that DC is responding -_-
So I can't touch 5 right now, probably not till lunch.
This is what I get for taking a day off to go to Six Flags tomorrow.

lol
always

and first on call this week
bitches.

1:37 PM
I can go 6 months with no problems... the one day I need to leave early the end of the world comes

urg

I had a machine with a virus on it about 3:30 last friday ...I leave at 4.
Luckily our somewhat-working kaspersky deployment caught it, so all I needed to do was verify it wasn't still infected and run a manual scan. Dodged a you're-gonna-stay-late bullet there.

Got my phone interview rescheduled for the third time today

morning

"Your DiskStation will be ready in about 10 minutes. Please have a cup of tea..."
2
What is this, england?!

1:41 PM
@Basil !!

Dan
@NathanC That's made me want a cup of tea. Can I be arsed to go downstairs, though?

@NathanC Whats worse is if you read it wrong.... I didn't read "DISK" Station...

Ahaha.
Welp, the setup failed naturally. To debugging!

@Cole screw them.

@NathanC I bought an antivirus (ClamAV) to go with our Deep Freeze deployment. It has failed to catch 2 different viruses so far. I called the OEM about it and they were like...ok. They told me there are steps to clean the virus. I was like..yeah...I know...but how about some definition updates?

1:47 PM
@ChrisS @syneticon-dj Windows counters and monitoring looks hard.

@ewwhite what do you think I should do?

Oh, figures. They don't have a real telnet interface ...it's a "forward this very abusable port and contact support"

@Cole Don't expect much out of them... keep looking. If they call and go through with it, take the interview... but factor that unprofessionalism into any decision.

@ewwhite It is slightly, as Microsoft Managers got to name all the Counters. And there's a giant list of about 400 categories, with counters under those, and instances under those.... It's not terrible, but it ain't straight forward either

@ewwhite Yeah, I'm having a hard time finding jobs :(

1:49 PM
@Cole is it location?

@ewwhite I'm in Boston...so probably not.

I have never done this (probably because it sounds like a bad idea and I haven't had the issue as frequently as you are), but you could try replacing a RAID battery on a test server while it is on. Slide it out, take the cover off, disconnect the bad battery, and connect the good, then back in the rack...If all goes well, you have a new battery replacement process that doesn't involve downtime. — August 44 secs ago

@cole interviews are a two-way process. Unless you really need that particular job you should consider this them failing their interview with you. After all, most companies are on their best behaviour with a potential employee in the recruitment phase...

@RobM truth

@ChrisS Kind of like the new event viewer started in Server 08?

Dan
1:50 PM
What did I miss?

@RobM Very good point.

@Travis Yes. Also has handy remote system features... and a zillion different logs (many of which are completely blank by default)

@RobM the manager I'm interviewing with is in India. The HQ is in Boston.

Dan
@ewwhite Uh

I can't get customer facing consulting roles, either

1:52 PM

@Dan That's almost as bad as...

A: HP Proliant Smart Array Controller P800 Battery replacement

Alex P.The battery elements used in P800 BBWC module are 1.2V 500mAh NiMH x4 - I have replaced many of those with regular AA NiMH batteries (of higher capacity) using a battery holder like this

@ChrisS (.how very funny.)

Dan
@ChrisS I'm not entirely sure what's going on there

@Dan an adolescent version of "I'm not touching you, I'm a whole inch away from you, the air is free"

@Dan I swear it's funnier when you're sleep deprived =]

Dan
1:54 PM
@JennyD Ah yeah, I'm with it. I was focussing on her pointing at herself

@Dan I guess having been in the situation of having to worry about being touched or grabbed or slapped by guys when walking past them makes it a whole lot less funny.

Dan
@JennyD :(

@ChrisS that one was a lot more funny :-)

Dan
@ChrisS I love Chinooks

mornin' gents

Dan
@JennyD Enjoyed that

And JennyD, of course.

Afternoon :-)

@ewwhite, Storage vMotion doesn't place the same type of stress on the array as a raid reconstruction. It's much less of an impact. Storage vMotion will simple read from the affected array and write to the unaffected array, while a reconstruction of a RAID6 volume involves a lot of distributed writes and parity calculations. I would have accepted your answer, but you added on a lot of unecessary lecturing and bad information. — Lucretius 2 mins ago

2:07 PM

@DennisKaarsemaker Any news? =)

@ChrisS I thought that was pretty fantastic.

@ScottPack You might like this then: i.imgur.com/LQbEsJy.jpg
None of our Aussies are around right now...

@ChrisS How many do we have? I thought just Mark.

@Adrian what? You still haven't heard anything? I need to kill someone in HR I guess. They keep messing this up

2:14 PM
IIRC Ward has popped in here before.

I thought Ward was Canadian...Whoops.

@DennisKaarsemaker see, referring people ain't worth it

am I retarded or is it not possible to subscribe to a tag anymore?

@ewwhite what a tool

@ScottPack He is Canadian. Just over the border from me.

2:17 PM
wait I'm retarded
8

@Chopper3 ;) He works for a grocery store chain that my produce clients have to deal with.

@DennisKaarsemaker Nothing yet.

@Adrian Oh good, so it's @ChrisS that's gone crazy.

@ewwhite on a checkout by the looks of his question

@ewwhite Largest one in the US, of course.
@ScottPack gone? Poor man lives in Michigan. I've been there, I understand. =)

2:19 PM
google.com/search?q=atari+breakout <-- Warning, addicting!

But I have had plenty of support problems with that grocery chain... like requiring TLS on incoming mail.

@Adrian Oy vey... MOAR CAFFEINE time

2:30 PM
tomtom's phone takes another star turn

http://serverfault.com/questions/511284/webmail-server-to-send-10000-mails-per-day/511287#511287

@DennisKaarsemaker And thank you in advance for LARTing HR. It's almost like dealing with a US West Coast startup. =)

@RobM Start making guesses on what TomTom uses.

No, windows phones do that too ;) — TomTom 6 hours ago

@tombull89 cocaine?

He's a windows uber alles kinda person

2:32 PM
@JustinDearing it's on the pop out when you float your mouse over th tag

@DennisKaarsemaker snerk

@Adrian No doubt. Skeeters. Skeeters as far as the eye can see!

@ScottPack And mayflies. They're actually a form of precipitation there, like fog or rain.

so, puppetlabs brought in the ruby dsl because puppets own language is crap, and are now ripping out the ruby dsl because it's unsupportable, requiring people to rewrite their recipes yet again
fucking ruby developers
that culture of who-needs-backwards-compatibility-anyway is insane.

2:37 PM
@Adrian I spent a summer in Dubuque, IA once. They close the bridges when the fishflies swarm. That was downright disgusting to watch.

@DennisKaarsemaker oh? what's happening?

see that link above
fortunately we never adopted the ruby dsl :)

@DennisKaarsemaker Ok, that's annoying. Which means all the books written for Puppet are worthless too.

@Adrian That's a huge deal.

@ewwhite I only go up to annoyed. It's safer for everyone involved.
Seriously makes me wonder about putting Puppet in for my personal stuff though. I don't have time to periodically rip out an entire infrastructure just for fun.

2:42 PM
Right... It's like how CFengine changed up its language.
just enough to leave people butthurt

butthurt!

A: Determining VM doing I/O on a Hyper-V host

Lucky LukeChris S is right, you want to look for Hyper-V specific performance counters. Take a look at our system monitoring solution EventSentry (free download), which includes a performance monitoring package for Hyper-V. We collect a number of relevant Hyper-V related counters, and you can add customer...

Dan
@ewwhite I think that's fair. He even says You can just download the 30-day trial without any obligations, that should be enough time to get to the bottom of it.

Oh, look who shows up when butts are mentioned

@Dan perfect and timely.

2:49 PM
I like big butts, and I cannot lie @DennisKaarsemaker

@Cole: have a picture of a large ass

Dan
@Cole What's up?

@Dan someone who wants to get into IT, asking /r/sysadmin about it.

Dan
@Cole Ah
Thread doesn't read too badly, to be fair

2:52 PM
Surprisingly not too many negative posts
yet

Dan
People just need to remember that people burn out in every profession

Like dentistry.

Does anyone use HP SoftPaq download manager with their HP (non-server) machines?

@tombull89 no
(maybe)

No...maybe...almost certainly yes...yes in fact I did it this morning

2:56 PM
@ScottPack Can you select to install just the drivers? I don't want any of the extra HP software or Power Assistant or Blu-Ray player or ProtectTools.

@tombull89 Oh, what? No. I was making a joke off what Ed said. I have no freaking clue.
2

I made the mistake on friday of kicking of an install before the weekend and I've come back to a machine full of bloatware.
@ScottPack sonofabitc-.
