12:00 AM
% echo foo | rev
oof

hrm... I looked a rev, but it doesn't seem to be doing what I want.
If I do sudo netcat -l -p 2000 -e /bin/cat and connect, everything I type is echoed back at me.
If I switch that to /usr/bin/rev, I don't see anything back.
Oh well, it doesn't matter much. I am just preparing to give some training to people on iptables, and i was going to spawn a whole bunch of netcat instances on various ports for people to connect to and nmap for testing their firewall.

@Ry Sounds pretty cool. Thanks!

I wanted to do something more interesting then just echoing back what they sent.

12:15 AM
@Zoredache I think that rev doesn't flush the output after each line
@Zoredache If I hit ^D in the client I get the sent data echoed back reversed

Using ^D didn't seem to be working for me.... Hrm...
Right, which doesn't help me in this case. I either need to do something with python/perl, or just not worry about it.

1:10 AM
Cute. Some local asshole insurance agent put a doorknob hangtag under my truck's wiper and the glue in the paper stuck to the glass. I've got glue and paper directly where I look through the glass now.

@Adrian Ask him if that's going to be covered by his policy, or if it's under his deductible.

1:27 AM
@jscott Yes, in fact. I left a message on his voicemail. He'd better call me back tomorrow, or I'll certainly be dropping in on his agency's grand opening on Saturday......

@Adrian With a baseball bat yelling, "This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!"

@ScottPack The problem with that is that I work for the agency that has the contract for crisis mental health services in this city. My co-workers would show up and ask say, "Adrian, what the fsck are you doing?"

@Adrian How is that a problem?

Uh, cuz then I'd go directly to jail. Or the cops might just decide to shoot first and ask questions later. They do that here too.
This IS the city where an officer shot a deaf homeless guy 5 times because he didn't respond fast enough to the request to come talk to the officer.

1:36 AM
As the father of a toddler, I can completely relate.

@Adrian They're trying to take guns off almost all our police officers here
A lot of them already only have tasers, and some groups want to even take tasers off the cops because they've killed a few people too

@MarkHenderson I dunno, to be honest. Nearly 1/3 of the cops on the force here have < 3 years experience. Lot of them haven't grown out of their aggro early-20s phase yet and they really need to be paired up with experienced cops.

@Adrian: a fair punishment for that is to cover the insurance agent and everything he owns in glitter

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. It's entirely possible that leafleting is a misdemeanor here under the littering ordinance. Should call in tomorrow and ask about that.

lol
(we love junkmail. Makes dog pop scooping so much easier)

1:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Our mailbox is right next to our recycling bin. 99% of the junk mail travels about 1 meter from the mailbox into the bin

@MarkHenderson: our mailboxes lock so we don't get non official junkmail. Poor chaps take the lift up, and climb down 25 stories to deliver our junk. The fine art of loading junk mail into a mail box array with a chopstick is dying...
old model

2:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek We have them too, but the slot gets jammed with junk mail so every few days that legit mail can't be put in there
(that's ok we hav ea PO box for legit mail)

@MarkHenderson I've seen a few things concerning English cops, who have gun and knife wielding criminals to deal with as a routine, but themselves don't carry weapons. Those guys and gals are some of the most badass people. They can do ten times what an American cop does and without a firearm.

@WesleyDavid They get a hurt-stick
It's a stick that hurts

@MarkHenderson And they know how to use it.

@MarkHenderson: we have optionally lockable slots now

They also know how to use their mouths and diffuse situations quite nicely. Something that few Americans, least of all those with badges, know anything about.

2:12 AM
@WesleyDavid I think they do things like shout, 'Oy!' and "WotWot' a lot.

@ScottPack You forgot "pip pip" and "cheerio"
Oh, and "brilliant"

@WesleyDavid: and a Fearsome Hat.

Right. Tenable failed me. Apache CIS audit file for the CIS Benchmark version 1.2. Current CIS benchmark is 3.0

JohnWe are trying to allow for a client to connect to our website. However now we must implement a range of IPs and rather than input thousands ...

@WesleyDavid Editing a perfectly readable question, ur doing it right

@MarkHenderson Oh hush, you. And watch this creepy video: huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/07/…

2:39 AM
Pistole, head of the TSA, said they're going to be trying some new tactics that involve watching for suspicious behavior and eye contact as they're grilled by congress for being incompetent, ineffective, and invasive.
Security experts, people who actually know security, have been advocating this for how many years?! And the TSA is acting like they invented this new idea.
And these are just OUR security experts. Isreal has actually been doing this for many years.

The TSA is a sham.

I wish I could get up in front of congress for 5 minutes and grill them for being stupid dumb*sses and not listening for years on end.

@ChrisS Only if you can manage to speak intelligibly on the subject while maintaining a 7th grade reading level.

@ScottPack Er, isn't that an oxymoron?

@ChrisS Which is exactly why Congressional testimonies are so effective.

2:50 AM
Could I call it 7th grade by interspersing profanity with logical arguments?

Pre-emptive strike.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ We'll let that one stew for a moment or two...

I thought you had to have 100 rep to go into chat.
unless invited.

@Adrian You can see it, but not interact.
If I recall.

Ah.

2:54 AM
Well. Actually. One only has to have 20 rep to talk in chat.
It requires 100 rep to create a new room.
Mmkay?

There we go. that makes more sense.

@ScottPack Your Goat Died Recently?

You know what recently dead goat means, right?

No, as a matter of fact. It was years ago, but I still recall Gwendolyn like she only left yesterday.
@ScottPack There be Satanists in them thar hills?

2:56 AM
Scrumptious goat stew.

@ScottPack And Satanists for dinner.
Mind the chubby ones. They're hard on the arteries.

Unrelated to goat, but I've been craving burgoo lately.

well, at least the insurance agent whose leaflet'ers vandalized my truck called me back. he's going to stop by in the morning with something to clean the windshield off.
@ScottPack My motorcycle club is having our annual goat roast this Saturday.

Probably a big bucket of gravel.

@Adrian Did you invite any local cultists?
Oh wait, motorcyclists. Duh. My bad.

3:01 AM
@Adrian I've not had much goat, but what based on what I have had, I prefer mutton.

@WesleyDavid Heh. Yes. Considering the high % of my friends that are neo-pagan, I think we got it covered.
@ScottPack Mmmm. Lamb curry.

Lamb anything really.
Last summer we made some pretty spectacular lamb burgers.

True. My local store has ground lamb. It's frightfully expensive, but I should give it a try.

Also. Lamb bbq. Yummo.

Considering that ground been runs $5-6/lb now, can't be all that much worse.

3:02 AM
We lucked out and got ours from the farmer's market.
Oy, it's frightfully late. I'm a gonna go to bed before I turn into a gourd.
G'night gentlemen. G'night @WesleyDavid.

@ScottPack Mew

@ScottPack g'nite!
@WesleyDavid Those east coast people really shouldn't stay up talking to us folk on this coast.

@Adrian Left coast is the best coast.

@WesleyDavid Generally speaking, also the batshit crazy coast too, but who's counting?

@Adrian Variety is the spice of life! And by "Variety" I mean "Is that man really wearing a kilt, dressed as santa while playing the bagpipes on a unicycle?"
Home Sweet home. I miss Oregon sometimes. =(

3:08 AM
@WesleyDavid You had that video ready to go very quickly

@MarkHenderson I have been known to warp space and time on occasion.
Dude's known as the Unipiper, BTW.
@MarkHenderson Oh and hello pixelcat.

@WesleyDavid Have I not spoken to you today?
My bad. I've been lurking for the past 6 hours :p
(don't be mad, I'm actually doing work)

@MarkHenderson I don't recall so, no. Maybe you did. 6 hours ago was my 2PM and I was in the midst of terrible vertigo and headache.
So it was all a blur.
Eating a few times and taking some Advil has made it all but disappear though.
Three cheers for allopathy!

Nice. Portland is much cooler than Seattle. Much less pretension on the part of the hippies.

Hipsters!

3:22 AM
@ewwhite That's probably where I got it from.

hipsters != hippies. Though they're both awfully pretentious.
My mother sent me some glasses for the Kinect. I guess it's corrective lenses for small rooms? We'll see how well it works.

@Adrian Enjoy your naked Jazzercise.

Heh. my living room is 9' x 12' without the furniture. Tiiiiiny.

@WesleyDavid I've been 30k for ages

16 supposed partitions for 8 supposed drives in a server that only has two hard drives in a RAID 1, one of which just failed.
I... just...
128 partitions, that's almost like it's reserving partitions for the maximum GPT allows...

@WesleyDavid IIRC, before udev came along, those devices had to be explicitly created beforehand
But unless that's a really old system, someone must have gone crazy with MAKEDEV.

Debian 4 rescue CD
Client in D.C. emailed me, their server crashed. It has a console concentrator on it and is booted into a Debian Rescue CD from ancient times.

my fileserver at home had an uptime of over 500 days until I lost one of my drives
would have been nice if the raid system had caught that instead of locking up the whole machine

@wfaulk Visionary.
Huh, clearly I'm a noob because I have no idea what all those devices are declared. NEvertheless, fdisk -l shows:
   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1               1         487     3911796   83  Linux
/dev/sda2             488         731     1959930   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3             732      121601   970888275   8e  Linux LVM
Sooo... yeah. That simplifies things.

what are you trying to do?

@wfaulk Log into a client machine that's down as a result of a HD crash and suck data off via a console connection and a Debian rescue CD

you'll need to reassemble the LVM first

5:13 AM
@wfaulk Yeah that's all done

oh, okay
I thought you were looking for help
just complaining, huh?

Yes, whining does a soul good. =)

Q: How can I manually remove a dead OCS 2007 R2 Monitoring server?

GodEaterAt the moment, I'm trying to get what is effectively a cut down version of our production OCS 2007 R2 environment working in a segregated lab. For a variety of different reasons, this initially consisted of a verbatim copy of our OCS 2007 R2 Active Directory forest - however for reasons of budget...

Ugh

@tombull89 To be fair I share his sentiments

the best deleted answer, probably, is this one from EL&U:

@tombull89 Haha what's he doing posting it on EU&L anyway

@MarkHenderson well he spammed it across a couple of sites, EL&U was the most irrelevant of them all.

@Iain Downwards perhaps. There's a particular gust around a block of flats at the top of a hill on my route home that I swear will be the death of me one day.

@Iain gotcha

@BartDeVos Are you in belgium?

@SmallClanger on one of my routes there is a field gate at the bottom of a hill - can be a bit nasty if it's blowy as I usually doing 40(ish)+ there

Does anyone here know of any nice software to produce nice .adm templates. Needs to be old fashioned ADM, and not ADMX, though

@BartDeVos Do you know of any Belgian ISP's that aggressively cache web page requests? We've got a weird problem from a client - but their IT Dept says they don't cache it must be their ISP.

@Dan Produce them from what? .REG files? A GUI?
I've always just kept an empty User/Computer template with a few of the available option examples.

@ITHedgeHog No, not that I can think off
The 2 main players (Belgacom/Telenet) do no caching whatsoever

@BartDeVos Thanks.. smelt like BS to me, just thought I'd check

12:29 PM
@ITHedgeHog The only one that does is ClearWire, but only on their student lines in the City of Ghent.
@ITHedgeHog Smells like BS indeed :)

@BartDeVos Thank you very very much

Dan
@jscott either of those, really. Just feeling a bit lazy and I haven't built any in a long time

@Dan There's a hackish RegToADM here: yizhar.mvps.org

@ITHedgeHog Is it one of those things where they don't think proxy == caching?

@BartSilverstrim PUNT!

12:32 PM
No, its one of those things where they're trying to blame all on us as 'the contractor'

@ChrisS yays!

'Thankfully' the main client believes us over them, but its bloody annoying - she has to wait 15 minutes to see updates to her website. The rest of the world sees them immediately

@ITHedgeHog That's really odd. Only on the client system, or client's internal network?

@Dan Even a lazy VB GUI App would be better than hacking at notepad. I've not found anything...

No one will check on other systems, so so far its reported on a single clients system.

12:34 PM
@ITHedgeHog My money goes to some internal network proxy

If clearing cache or using a different browser doesn't immediately show the changes, I'd next suspect AV software or anti-malware doing something strange.
If it's on the whole network, it could be some oddball proxy internally. But is the web server internal too or external?

Dan
@ChrisS Tell me about it :D

Web server is external

Dan
@jscott Thanks, think that'll do!

Just spoke to their head of IT - now I have a different story
At least they're looking

12:37 PM
@ITHedgeHog: I tend to troubleshoot stuff like that with tor browser bundle
assuming tor isn't blocked

@JourneymanGeek thanks! I'll check that out

@ITHedgeHog Wow...they didn't try other systems internally, evidently didn't really research the issue much, but immediately blamed you for it?

Nothing is blocked for me here.

That's a whole new level of derp.

A lot of stupid contractors in Belgium
Just really stupid, not unknowing, plain stupid

12:40 PM
Belgium...Belgium...OH YEAH! That's the place where chocolate is currency, right? Or is it waffles?

Anyone know if the chkdsk that comes with XP is 16 or 32 bit?

most likely 32 bit

I thought so too; but I'm starting to doubt myself.

16 bit on windows 32 is virtualised, and chkdsk is 'native' API software

@chriss: do you have XP running on something right now?

12:44 PM
Right off my hands for now, thanks @BartSilverstrim & @BartDeVos

@BartSilverstrim Nope =/

@ChrisS Supposedly if you right click the EXE and go to properties, if there's no "version" tab, it's 16 bit.

I just extracted it from a install ISO; it just crashes on Win7-64

@BartSilverstrim Beer :)

CHKDSK.EXE: PE32 executable for MS Windows (console) Intel 80386 32-bit
i just copied it from a remote workstation I know is running XP to my Linux system and ran File.

12:49 PM
Interesting that it just crashes on Win7-64; but I figured it would be 32-bit. So it wont work on a "DOS" bootdisk created by XP.

Maybe it's like a stub or something. I see a chkntfs program there too...maybe it needs other applications available in path to work?
Procmon might tell you something about why it crashes.
@BartDeVos ...there's beer in NotAmerica?

@ChrisS: Going to try to find someone to fix the community ads

@KyleBrandt They haven't been working for a while, no rush now...

Heh, you guys want us to start getting EVONY ads instead?
Well, it would get more per-click impressions than all the other put together.

1:02 PM
@BartDeVos Maybe you just live in a part of America I haven't seen yet.

1:18 PM
went to a dentist friend office last night; we're building a website together. beautiful office; leather chairs, everything solid oak. tile and solid surfaces. something like 4 or 5000 sq ft. all this money invested and i cant help but think - dude, you really couldn't spare 4ft x 4ft for a proper server room? power edge under the countertop in the break room, couldn't find the cable modem or wifi router to reset it (someone else did the work, not me).
even a half rack would hold a nice remote console, the power edge, a ups and can mount the modem / wifi to it.

@Mario I've noticed that same in a lot of law offices too.
I used to do SMB consulting for a firm that most clients were law offices and doctor's offices. Super nice places then a server jammed in the corner somewhere and wires hanging every where.

makes no sense. and its not like its some bullshit server holding word docs or crap. it has patient information on it (Dentrix server).
i'm not a big guy, but even i can smash the window and take the server with me. security system or not.

1:35 PM
@ChrisS apparently we had 3000 impressions in the last week, we have 175K+ pageviews/day Mon-Fri and 75k+ at the weekends so it's no wonder you don't get to see them

@Iain Where do you see 3000 impressions?

@Iain A always wondered how they get those figures and how reliable they are...

1
A: Community Ads broken (again, 3rd time this year)

JgingerI have worked with Chernoff a few times on getting these ads fixed :) I just pulled a report for the impressions served over the last week- the open source ads served over 3000 impressions, so they're not broken, they just have a low Share of Voice (SOV). I will increase the SOV and ask that you ...

Q: How to install FFMpeg in WampServer 2.0 (Windows XP)

Richard KnopI need to install the ffmpeg PHP extension on my localhost so I can test few of my scripts but I am having troubles figuring out how to do that. I have WampServer 2.0 with PHP 5.2.9-2, my OS is Windows XP. Please somebody give me step by step instructions. I have found some Windows builds here:...

I know it's a historical Q, but close nonetheless?

@ewwhite he's trying to do it how he wants. How wrong that is - dunno

@Iain I didn't think it was an option to go all serial.

I've never even considered serial for ESXi and don't know if the server has a suitable serial console

1:50 PM
@mario: you can get into a console on the ESXi server.

Alt-F1
then type "unsupported"

i see that now - googled.

I think you'll find the console ... underwhelming. It leads you to start feeling you're in a 'nix environment, so you start getting your hopes up - until the first time you try to mount a USB drive or try a "locate"
2

To be fair it's not the way they want you to do things on the system. The "unsupported" part is a big tip of the hat to that.

@JohnK so true

1:58 PM
If anyone has any questions on those topics, I'm your man

In particular, luring bears with spam

you write about luring bears with spam on your blog? cool.

+1 Bart, def not something you want to get used to relying. vmWare's kinda gone back and forth too with what it supports - you never know when they'll strip some functionality out.

I have the number one blog on luring bears with spam in the world -- I put it at the top of my resume
3

2:02 PM
@KyleBrandt very important while surviving in the wild!

speaking of VM - is there an easier way to move a VM from VMWare Server 2 to ESXi than downloading the files to my PC and reuploading them to ESXi?
some kind of conduit between the 2 to transfer directly?

Um...no, you generally don't want to lure bears while surviving in the wild.

I'm relatively new to the comms room...but I starred Kyle's blog mention on bear luring because I found it both useful and interesting - am I doing this right :P

@Kyle Does your method involve throwing a tin of spam at a bear and then running away very fast?

Hope not. Bears run faster than humans.

2:03 PM
@JohnK you can star whatever you want

@johnk For the perfect star storm, mention: Stars, Boobs, Markdown and (optionally) Printers.
4

@Mario - There are different methods depending on what your setup looks like, but take a look at VMotion.

get warry when vendors say zero down time. i tend to find that not true.
looks like that might work.

@Mario check out the standalone converter
2

I think VMWare's product naming convention is ridiculous. vsphere, vmotion, esxi, etc... wtf. cant you just call it server, console, conduit

2:07 PM
Man this is awesome, I haven't been in a chat room this awesome since I had AOL.

@Mario They tend to define downtime as "When the service is unavailable for more than 5 solid hours and we had no idea it was coming".

i've used converter; worked well for my linux boxes except that it ate the boot manager. few google searches and i got it fixed (was a known issue)

@JohnK Don't know if vmotion will work in taking something from an existing server 2 to ESX.

@SmallClanger that happened to us last year with Exchange. 2950 power edge was complaining of a failed hard drive. so went to replace it. turns out before the raid set could be rebuilt, a 2nd drive failed. down for 3 days :( that sucked.

@Mario While I agree that huge names with buzzwords and marketing lingo are a PITA, they use some of those to designate licensed add-ons you pay for.
The person to ask about VMware is @chopper3.
But vmotion is a separate feature you can only really use with shared storage.
So it's not really a "conduit." It's just switching which server is actually running the VM, the storage where the disk image resides doesn't move.

someday when i feel like doing it i'll probably call CDW. hes been itching for us to spend some money haha
@BartSilverstrim the download and upload has worked for me in the past with other images. takes some time but it works

@BartSilverstrim Yeah, agreed. I wasn't sure what his setup was, nor have I worked with Server 2 at all. Should have probably just kept quiet, but VMotion and converter were the first two things that came to mind

If you're running a hodgepodge of physical servers with local storage, no, you need to move the disk images manually for the most part, or use backup and restore as if they were physical servers to create the servers on the (new) server and take the old ones down. Or create a cluster.
@JohnK server 2 is very old. I'd not be surprised if there were problems with conversion/compatibility.

as for downtime - not a big deal - i'll do it on the weekend or before we open - the servers are relatively small single purpose

@BartSilverstrim yeah, or setup here is all servers with local storage. We've always had to rely on moving disk images manually too.

That's what we have here. It's a PITA to do it that way.

2:16 PM
Totally is. We've got a guy here with an awesome script that uses SCP to move the VM's around. Works pretty well for the most part.
GhettoVmotion :)

@JohnK Guessing that's an offline move then....

@JohnK You don't take the machines down while copying?
...corruption?

I covered the LinkedIn account problems a couple days ago, and since then, Last.FM and eHarmony have both had at least part of their passwordbase compromised. It is interesting to me when news stories like this "clump". The same thing happens across the board, regardless of the topic. As soon as a moderately sized earthquake [...]

Would a kinda mod explain to this user that the Tag wiki/excerpts aren't supposed to be unattributed copy/pastes from Wikipedia/Google?

@Bart Yeah, meant to mention, that's an offline copy/move. Not the most elegant but makes it a little easier.
