Weee! Just applied for a business credit card from my bank. I hope credit isn't as hard to come by as it was two years ago...

Ry.
@WesleyDavid A bank just gave me a $2500 credit card. I am the least credit-worthy person on the planet. I would not loan me money. Yet, there it is.
btw, do you have a spare $5000 laying around? I'll hit you back in a couple

@WesleyDavid Here you start with a AAA credit rating, and you have to lose it first
Which means that when you're young the banks just throw credit cards at you

@Ry Err... no. Crazy business idea?

Ry.
@WesleyDavid sure, I'll kickstart a something something mobile social mumble user-generated-content

@Ry @MarkHenderson I have never, in my nearly 30 years, had a credit card, Bill Me Later, or even a Net contract with a supplier. This is literally the second time I've applied for credit. The first time was when I opened a business banking account two years ago for my LLC and the bank manager said it was worth a shot to get a credit line at the same time. I was denied.
I've never been in debt except to my mom when I was 11 when she loaned me $120 to get a pair of Rollerblades. =P
Of course, that also means I've never owned anything nice, never went to college and don't own a home...

Ry.
12:06 AM
@WesleyDavid no phone bill that's net 30?

@Ry I'm on the family plan for ATT. Kinda weird, but... I hear a lot of people still stick to the household's wireless plan well beyond childhood years. =)

Ry.
@WesleyDavid it also means you aren't a slave. owning nice things is not as nice as being not tied down
@WesleyDavid A co-worker of mine has a family plan and almost his whole extended family is on one bill - it's like 20 people, all adults of age > 40 or so

@Ry Yeah, I plan on only using the CC if I've got the cash in the bank account. I just want the cash back rewards which, at the end of the year could get me a few thousand dollars back.
I expect to be placed on a $500 credit limit to start with.
I just want to put my recurring bills on it like hosting, CRM, cloud stuffs, phone, ISP

Ry.
@WesleyDavid I had a co-worker who expensed, essentially, a data center. He bought a very nice RV with his airline miles

Well, not sure if the phone can go on it since that's just a check to the stepdad.
@Ry I'll believe it. I plan on using the plastic whenever possible for that very reason.

12:10 AM
@wfaulk No, not at all, I only got into it when I was living in nyc

Ry.
@WesleyDavid Capital One will give a credit card to anyone in the US. I have two from them, for $500 and $750

I know of people who use their airline miles card to buy $1 coins from the mint, and then deposit them back into their bank account. Quite the racket. =)

Ry.
@WesleyDavid the mint closed that hack down a bit

Party poopers

i was gonna put one of my projects on kickstarter - its stalled cause i suck at local sales :(

Ry.
12:12 AM
@WesleyDavid I'm never one to poop on a party - unless, of course, it's that kind of party
(Duckman)
@Mario I want to kickstart a project, but then I'd have to do it, and fuck that
I just want the money

@Ry A friend of mine jsut started an indie project that I was going to blog about. IT dude here in town...

@Ry i know a few businesses that pay for everything via credit cards including the 400k worth of windscreens they buy each month from their supplier
the amount of free flights they get is amazing

i did the work - still running on a rackspace cloud server - stopped short of buying some crazy database encryption (on top of the measures i already took) and fine tuning / cleanup

Ry.
@WesleyDavid like thick-framed glasses and tight pants indie, or what?
@Tacticus and if you need the travel, it's a godsend

12:15 AM
cloud based, log file management - conduit written in c# - log entries 128bit encrypted with salted 128bit user logins. really went out of my way to make sure it was secure. then i saw splunk came out with cloud based log management. wtf.
even pen tested the damn server to nsa standards. i've become a paranoid fuck.

Ry.
@Mario and yet, not paranoid enough

@Tacticus Friend of mine did that. Spent over $1m on his personal Amex card and just re-imbursed it all to his business

Ry.
@WesleyDavid that looks pretty cool

He then got invited into the top-level Titanium Amex club :p
Cos they thoguht all his purchases were for personal use

Ry.
@MarkHenderson I know a PM at Microsoft that got the uber treatment from AMEX because he was buying racks of hardware and expensing it

12:17 AM
@Ry Well you may as well do it if you can :p

Ry.
@MarkHenderson well, hell yeah

This guy now gets personal concierge service. Got stuck at a football game, couldn't get a taxi, called Amex and a stretched limo turned up 10 minutes later, complimentary

@Tacticus A lot of suppliers freaking hate that though because of CC fees. Most will really try and push you onto their net terms.

Ry.
@MarkHenderson yes, I was going to mention that

Left his $1000 phone in the back of a friends car. Called up Amex, they told him to go get a new one, for free. Found the old phone, called up Amex, they said he could keep it

12:18 AM
@WesleyDavid here in .au they get to stick the fees on top
so it really doesn't matter

@Tacticus Stop being so damn progressive, you bunch of convicts!!

@WesleyDavid Yeah, notices everywhere that AMEX useage incurrs a 2% fee

I'm going to go cry on a bald eagle now.

@WesleyDavid Everyone used to do it, but it was technically illegal, so they changed the law to permit it

@MarkHenderson That's why I didn't bother getting a CC processing account for client payments. I take cash or check only. I'm not dealing with those fees.

12:19 AM
@MarkHenderson I fucking LOVE amex concierge - they've got me about 75% of all the concert tickets I've been to for the last ten years - worth the cost for that alone

So then of course, some companies (QANTAS, I'm looking at YOU) take it too far and charge a $10 booking fee for buying tickets
@WesleyDavid Cheque? omg welcome to 1970

@MarkHenderson Yarp, but it's still one of the easiest ways to receive payments without fees.

i can truly say i have never written out a cheque in my life

@Tacticus Ditto

@WesleyDavid square's fees aren't bad. even without card present, 2k from my canada designer turns into $19xx

12:21 AM
Occasionally I receive payments via chqueue from insurance companies

@WesleyDavid Direct debit ftw

But I know that banks charge a fortune for issuing cheque books these days

i used to work at a place that paid via cheques because the owner did not like online banking

Never written a check out? Wow. Interesting difference in cultures.

My mother in law still has a bloody passbook account, but refuses to move off it, even though the bank charges her a fortune for maintaining it
@WesleyDavid Depositing cheques is a hassle. And no, never written one. Everything is online banking transfers these days when you need to transfer money for free

12:22 AM
Okay, interesting question @MarkHenderson, If I was to subcontract for your company, how would I get paid most likely?

@WesleyDavid bpay and online transfers

Ry.
@WesleyDavid in cookies

its faster than cheque too. Cheques take about a week to clear. Online = 24 hours
@WesleyDavid Direct transfer

@MarkHenderson I haven't been inside a bank or even at an ATM in many months. I do all my banking on my phone. I take a snapshot of checks and they clear. I shred the check once it's cleared. Done.

I have never been paid in anything except sexual favours and direct internet transfer

12:23 AM
@MarkHenderson My checks take less than 24 hours to clear.

@WesleyDavid Phone?! Welcome to 1990 :P

Slowly progressing to the new millenium!

And as for taking a snapshot of a cheque, well there was talk here lately of even shutting down the cheque exchange service because it's usage is below 10% of where it was in 2000

@MarkHenderson Interesting, so can I get subcontracted by your company? You know, for science and cultural exchange?

I got a refund cheque deposited into the bank the same day I submitted an invoice to Fog Creek. Fog Creeks money turned up, from the US, over a weekend, faster than the cheque cleared (and was for substantially more)
@WesleyDavid Probably not. Hiring from overseas means all sorts of pain.

12:25 AM
Curse you debian etch

what was the slogan - buy american and americans work?

@MarkHenderson Even for contractors? Interesting. I've done some work for a place in England and they just sent me money via paypal for my invoices.

Although somewhere along the line someone swiped $10 for the SWIFT transfer (whcih is also bullshit, but whatever)
@WesleyDavid I dunno. Maybe. Perhaps they just write the tax off into expenses, I'm not sure
If you're overseas we dont have to pay tax

@Mario Buy American and Union bosses light cigars with flaming kittens? AMIRITE?!

I dunno, this is why I dont run my own business

12:26 AM
@WesleyDavid All my US work gets paid into my US bank - that helps matters no end

@WesleyDavid haha

@WesleyDavid I've got little/nothing to hide but I do like to be tax efficient

I'd better delete that lest it be taken out of context... =)

still haven't done my taxes. extension filed though

@Mario I had my taxes done many weeks before they were due. I sent them out the earliest possible moment. I also send my quarterly taxes in on first of each quarter. I'm anal. But I'm also not ever audited. =P

12:29 AM
i'll owe like 2k+ so i'm in no rush :)
but yeah, before i got married, i had them done 1st week ish

@Mario Marriage complicated things that much?

@WesleyDavid Here marriage has almost no effect on taxes. You submit seperate tax returns. Children can affect tax returns depending on which tax benefits you're entitled to and who can claim them

company wife works for - incorporated in a different state for some tax reason. because of this, taxes aren't taken out of her paycheck (shes an owner) so she pays at tax time. she never saves for it through the year so i get fucked in the end

@Mario Yeah but, you also get fucked in the end, so I'm guessing it's worth it?

twice on sunday

12:31 AM
@Mario Lucky bastard

marriage is over rated. to many compromises haha
buy new laptop or new dining room table. wtf.

@Mario Haha I can relate. I just bought new speakers for the home theatre. Because I spent a bunch of money on that now she wants a bunch of money for new curtains. But we don't have the money cos I spent it on speakers

"Put some paper plates on the floor and stop being so high maintenance!!"

only reason i still freelance (and i like doing it). day job pays the bills - freelance pays for toys / remodeling, vacations

(for what its worth, the speakers were totally worth it)

12:35 AM
@MarkHenderson what kind?

@Mario Infinity Modulous Somethingorother
It was an End Of Life product so I got them for a steal

love end of life
scored my 50 inch samsung plasma for 1k cause it was last years model

@Mario Same. It's not like end of life stuff suddenly gets worse, its just that something a tiny bit better is coming out
@Mario Exactly
Depending on what it is, I'll even take the floor stock

like u said, nothing wrong with it; just not bleeding edge

Probably not on a TV or speakers, but certainly on a washing machine or a fridge, cos they're not usually even plugged in, thus no actual usage

12:38 AM
5000 series bosch washer, 7000 series bosch dryer - mixed set - cut 1500 off the price. got that for 1200 :)
never used laptops though - people eat over them, spill liquids (watch porn) no no no

@Mario I had a Bosch washer, loved it for years until the drive belt came off. Kept putting it back on, you'd get one or two loads and it would come off again
Got a Bosch diswasher too, love that as well, except all the markings on the knobs have rubbed off in less than 3 years, so it's fine cos we know what all the spots do, but for someone else it's a bit like poking your dick around in the dark at a party and hoping it falls into the right woman so you don't get divorced.

haha

I also have a Bosch circular saw and angle grinder
And the brakes on my car are from Bosch too
Man they make a lot of stuff

love my lennox furnace once the asshole installers fixed it - things got so bad with the installer i bought their domain name so if shit went further south, i could open a hate website

I'm a fan of Miele appliances myself - bit plain looking but they just work forever

12:45 AM
probably should release the domain name so if douche is smart enough someday to run a whois, he wont see its me
i've heard good things about miele vacumes - went with a battery operated dyson (all hard wood floors)

we have one of those tiny dyson hand vac for the kitchen, they're great - I got a Miele wine cooler thing

save a lot of money when you know how to do home renovations yourself... all i fucking do when i'm not working. sigh

@Chopper3 Don't even get me started on how much sex I now get because of Dyson

15 min on the dyson battery. plenty of time to vacume cat hair every fucking day

@Mario I feel your pain. We've re-done our kitchen, laundry and bathroom over the past 2 years
Every time I say "never again"
And yet, there I am with the fucking rotary hammer ripping up concrete slabs

12:51 AM
@MarkHenderson new kitchen, furnace, air conditioning, breaker panel, windows, 2 of 3 bedrooms remodeled, dining room remodeled. every room wired cat5e and in wall speakers. all new lighting fixtures, trim, doors, insulation, wiring, plumbing. aside from the foundation and frame, its a brand new 100 year old house.
like back when a 2x4 was actually a 2x4 - my friend was like, thats fucked up - the way it was back then

@Mario Ha! Been helping a friend remodel his 100+ year old "bungalo" here in Rochester. It was a shithole when he bought it. Love the attention to detail they had when framing walls back then... studs on 16? Naw, lets try 19, 23, 29, whatever hold the roof up.
Oh, and let's run a horizontal beam 30ish inches up the wall... That'll help.
Be sure to offset the studs above the beam from the ones below! That makes it stronger.

i saw that when we started the 2nd floor - its actually called balloon framing. no footer 2x4 on the 2nd floor, they just extended the wall up
fucking awesome
(i had to look it up, wtf is that, i exclaimed)
or the door headers made out of pieces of 2x4 - not a solid 2x6 or 2x8.

@jscott man there aren't even that many 100 year old houses in Australia
And those that are would be heritage listed and crazy expensive

1:07 AM
i think i'm building my next one. i've had enough remodeling and i'm not even done yet

@Mario Best of luck, I think building as a noble endeavor. But man it can cost depending on the area you choose. Lots of cheap land in NY, but it's pretty much nowhere.
@MarkHenderson This was a "worker" house, that was built during the times of "rapid" development of the area. There's lot of them about the city...tiny one/two bedrooms next to, or behind the much nicer three/four bedroom "real" houses.

my taxes right now close to the city are 3500. my parents in the suburbs are just shy of 9k / year. building it is easy. taxes are a bitch
and they have all of 400 sq ft on me
on the other hand, my brother just built in another part of town (a suburb also) and dude doesn't have a real piece of wood or copper in it. its all manufactured wood beams and that pex rubber piping shit

@Mario Oh gosh, county taxes... I'm bound to live in Monroe as per my appointment, but man are the property taxes so much lower just 15 miles over in Ontario county.

they dont build them like they ust to for sure

If I could deal with moving to the boonies, it's even less.

1:20 AM
wheres monroe - rings a bell

Monroe, Rochester, NY..

thats right, thought u were saying monroe in ontario

@Mario Could be! I don't know Canadia that well :)

wait, ontario canada or ny ? :)

New York.

1:21 AM
ahh
trying to remember what town my friend lives in, in rochester
they ust to live in buffalo blocks from me, built a beautiful house in rochester to be closer to family and ended up paying more in taxes than they did here in buffalo

@Mario For just the most fleeting time, I'm in Irondequoit, but it sucks. Terribly ped/cycling unfriendly... Cannot wait to move back to the city proper.

property is cheap in buffalo - should come and take a look
my house is just about 2000 sq ft and cost me $120k

@Mario Maybe, but I hear your winters are more shit than even ours

was alright this year - better than most
not that an inch of snow is acceptable to me. if i had it my way, id move to vegas

And the whole next-to-Niagara-Falls thing -- tough choice. :)

1:27 AM
sad when people want to go see niagara falls, we take them to the canadian side cause the american side is like a ghetto

But for certain, from my formative years being a scumbag skateboarder, Buffalo definitely has a better "city" community compared to Rochester.

1:42 AM
"goto the desktop and try to open the file. my other computer? no, the desktop. but i downloaded the file on my laptop. The Desktop. The Windows Desktop. where you saved the file to."

@Mario LOL Dad-support. Good luck

odd though, holding control + alt click restore isnt working in itunes to install ios 6. he must be doing something wrong.
good luck with finding a house @jscott - off to bed i go.

@Mario iOS6? Are you a developer?

yeah

gnight mate,

1:47 AM

working on something for restaurants now

Soooo, wait... was this question asked just to add good content to the site? So much downvoting, but the answer got a good response:

Q: Why are switching loops(layer 2) worse than routing loops?

gsinhaWhy are switching loops(loops with bridges) worse than routing loops(loops with routers)?

This one too:

Q: Will RSTP BPDUs be encapsulated in tagged Ethernet frames?

gsinhaRSTP(Rapid Spanning Tree) is configured on a bridge. All ports of this bridge are "trunk" ports and are part of vlan “x”. Will the BPDUs sent out of this bridge be tagged?

@WesleyDavid I downvoted the first - it's comparing apples to oranges; which is "worse" is completely subjective. I upvoted both the question and answer of the second.

Ry.
the whole thing is crazy
I'd like to buff sqa by asking the missing questions, but people don't vote on anything, or answer, so why bother?
gah, sqa should just die

@Ry ;_;

Haha have people not noticed that the q/a are from the same person?

Ry.
@MarkHenderson I did not :)

3:57 AM
@MarkHenderson No, people have, and it's fine to Q/A yourself, or even ask a question with the sole intent of answering it moments later, but... I'm not sure exactly why his questions are getting beat down so bad.

Ry.
@WesleyDavid I know, badittude, but with nobody moderating sqa, and nobody voting, it's a ghost town

Bigbio2002 seems to offer a suggestion, but it's wrong.

@WesleyDavid No, me neither.

Ry.
the questions that get asked are hit-and-runs with about a 0% accept rate

@Ry what's sqa?

3:58 AM
@MarkHenderson Software Q/A site in beta right now

@WesleyDavid Ah right

Ry.

Well, not Q/A, but rather "Quality Assurance"
Dude, the fact that you guys didn't name it SQuAT pretty much means you deserve to be buried. =P

Ry.
I didn't name it
I have 101 rep there
can't even downvote obvious shit
or close bullshit questions
so frustrating

the questions asked are kind of generic... the rapid vs standard stp on VLAN is actually asking (and answering) the wrong question

4:00 AM
Weee! This Sunday I get my three year badge on SF!

Ry.
@WesleyDavid I've been there three+ years, no badge serverfault.com/users/1830/ry

@Ry "Active member for a year, earning at least 200 reputation. This badge can be awarded multiple times."

Ry.
ah, OK.

@Ward Crap. You just HAD to put that Eagles song in my head....

grr I hate dumb NAS's. Copying a huge file means making the bits travel to my local machine and back to the NAS again

Ry.
ouch
@Adrian try not to think of "call me maybe"

Q: Why are switching loops(layer 2) worse than routing loops?

gsinhaWhy are switching loops(loops with bridges) worse than routing loops(loops with routers)?

The answer to that question is self answered and it a verbatim lift from a book :(

@Iain: Thats a new one

@Iain I suspected as much when I saw that

I just googled the answer and it popped up
@mgorven I thought so too last night when I saw the question
so I checked this morning

I saw this infographic recently concerning Microsoft’s stagnation and Apple’s phenomenal growth in the last ten years. I regard myself as rather agnostic concerning brand wars and really don’t care what technologies a person or company uses, just so long as it works well. However, it might be interesting to note the lackluster decade that Microsoft has had. The Zune, Windows M

Q: How to set a management IP on a Dell powerconnect 5524/5548 switch?

John LittleWhen you first power on a 5524, connected via the serial console, you are offered a setup wizard where you can enter the management IP/Net/Gateway and enter the admin password. HOWEVER, if you dont do this in 60 seconds, the wizard dissapears, and there seems to be no way to run it again - even ...

find out the default ip of the switch and try to telnet in ?

12:42 PM
No default IP... or so it seems.
although it is DHCP capable...

any reset to factory button?

Just a reset pin
But I feel like I'm not getting enough info...
so it better for the person to call it in to support.

try that... if its dhcp capable, jack it into a pc - share the internet connection - run a dhcp server - could assume the first ip to be served is .1 or .2
dell equipment (other than pcs or servers) are almost never dell created. its probably a d-link or whatever rebranded.
we roll hp procurves - never had a problem like that. odd.

@ewwhite: Well, it is only two hours old, maybe someone will come along who has seen that before

default menu command on the hp is menu - try that?

Yeah, it seems like a newer switch. Has HDMI ports on the front for stacking.

How do you do something like that?

@KyleBrandt Yeah, HDMI 10GbE stacking ports.

Wait

You can do 10GbE over HDMI?
wut.

WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO

But you only get full 10GbE if you use gold-plated Monster cables...

seriously though thats fucking wut

@ewwhite Fair enough, probably cheaper than the 10G optics.

Q: Is it possible to use HDMI cable to transfer files between notebooks?

Chau Chee YangHDMI 1.3 bandwidth is over 10G. Notebook nowadays has HDMI port available. Is that possible that we use HDMI cable to hook up 2 notebook and perform file copy operation?

^^ WRONG

Seriously, in the support forums - "You will need cables that provide throughput of 10.2 Gbps (max. allowed by HDMI specification). Usually the cheaper cables do not provide this."

Aren't most stacking cables rated higher than 10Gb though?

still yurn for a ethernet adapter for my iphone / ipad. no wifi = bring my laptop with me when shit breaks.
