@MarkHenderson Likewise except 's/whiteboxed //' .
@Adrian I don't have too much of an issue with supermicro, really, but hand-made ones I do
@MarkHenderson Aren't they all handmade at some point?
@Adrian Robots!
@Adrian OK, hand-made by me then :P
@84104 Well, I'm pretty sure mine are the hand-built variety judging by the number of servers I received over the years with stripped-out chassis screws.
23:02
WTF, I go to all that work to figure out someone's problem and I get a downvote.
@84104 Eh, What? You been hanging out with the Developers and taking bong hits?
-1
A: Google bots are severely affecting site performance

Michael HamptonI don't think it's Google's bots killing your server. That's the least of what's going on here. Absolutely the first thing you should do is set up caching. W3 Total Cache is a good start. Using PHP-APC is another very good idea as that will reduce your CPU usage. Beyond that, the obvious bottl...

@Adrian I blame the weather. It's just too hot right now.
@MichaelHampton So, that dude wants our help is sorting out performance issues with his blog scraper?
@84104 Winter started here this weekend. People are finally chilling out.
23:07
Pretty much. I'm just annoyed that I got downvoted.
@Adrian It's apparently 94 degrees now.
@WesleyDavid prrrrr
@MarkHenderson You can your cat calls.
@MichaelHampton And the incorrect answer got upvoted
@MarkHenderson nudge
23:12
Of course, I doubt MY answer will not resolve the actual problem, but it's a solution for the problem the OP thinks they have.
@WesleyDavid Do you want a gimp? I got the keys to our new house on the weekend but the previous owners left behind a black cat. It's scraggly and hasn't eaten properly in weeks. And we all know to succesfully train a gimp you need to break their spirit. This one is broken. You just need to re-train it.
@MarkHenderson They left it IN the house?
@Adrian Nah in the back yard, so its had freedom and has clearly eaten the bare minimum to survive over the past 3 months the house has been vacant
@MarkHenderson I shall retrain it in the image of Bobcat Goldthwait
@MarkHenderson Ah. Happens, I suppose. Also why I've never let my cats outside unsupervised.
23:18
OK, I'm a lot less pissed off now. Thanks guys. :)
@Adrian The prev. owners got a divorce so they obviously couldn't decide what to do with the cat so they just left it behind. Makes me angry that they did that, cos now I have to take the goddamn cat to the pound where it'll be put down in fairly short timeframe I think, making me feel guilty about it
@MarkHenderson Ah. Not too many no-kill animal shelters there, eh?
@Adrian None as far as I know of. Shit I got no problem with killing the animal, I'd do it myself if there wasn't anywhere to take it, it just makes me feel guilty
@MarkHenderson No "no kill" shelters, or at least "try really hard and take a long time before killing" shelters around?
@MarkHenderson Hey, it's not like YOU starved the cat.
23:19
@MichaelHampton No, but it's already treating me like Im its new owner, even though I've never fed it. It comes up and bloody rubs against my legs and meows at me and gives me sad-eyes
Anyway my boss's wife is going to try and re-home it, but if she can't find a home by Friday then it's going to the pound
My wife and my dad are severely allergic to cats, so it can't stay
So feed it. Nurse it back to health. And then go dump it in the previous owners' lap.
Well, that's a good sign. Around here at least, it's the unfriendly ones that get euthanized. The friendly ones get adopted pretty quick.
@MichaelHampton No idea who they are or where they live. The cat probably isn't even registered (and thus not microchipped).
@Adrian Yeah it's a real friendly cat, but it's not particularly cute or cuddly :p
Well then. I think you've found a new owner.
@MarkHenderson It'd probably be a lot cuter once it's fattened up a bit...
23:21
Eh, it might be when it recovers.
@freiheit This is true
Yeah, the last cat I adopted looked like hell because she's been dumped while she was pregnant with kittens. She turned out to be a beautiful long-haired tortoise-shell once she'd recovered and fattened up.
FSCKING HELL!!!!
Been trying to talk mgmt into video conferences for 2.5 years.
"First Posts" went from 1.1k to 273. WTF?
They said 2 MONTHS ago that they didn't need and it wasn't good ROI.
Now I just got a ticket in saying they want me to throw it together in 11 days so that they can do a 12-site video-conference using slides and whiteboards.
And, of course, it has to be zero cost.
@Adrian Trying to plan too far in advance is the sort of good deed that's almost always guaranteed to be punished...
23:29
@MarkHenderson I'm not a cat person, but people like that should be shot. Its a fricking pet (or evil overlord). There is no excuse to just leave it behind.
@Adrian Edit your ticket system's close reasons, adding an "Absurd" close reason.
@freiheit Apparently so. Fixing the roof is "Not a Priority" until the damn thing caves in.
@MichaelHampton I have spare slots. I should do this, at least on the test system.
@Adrian Wait, delay, crisis, panic...
@freiheit And the padawan, God bless him, thinks a MagicJack VOIP is the answer to everything now.
23:31
@JourneymanGeek Believe it or not I'm not a cat person either (just cos I pretend to be a cat on the internet, you know...) but yea, it's just lazy and disgraceful
@MarkHenderson: I prefer dogs. I prefer people arn't such useless wastes of oxygen that they think leaving a domesticated animal to fend for itself even more.
@MichaelHampton That bad MoFo is getting printed out in color and taped to the side of my workstation
@MarkHenderson You know what's weirder? I don't like cats either.
I only like other people's cats.
I'm mostly fine with the local strays, there was this one kitten that kept climbing up 25 floors, getting spooked by my dog (and hiding in some boxes) and had to be carried back to ground level
23:34
@JourneymanGeek That's one badass kitten.
@WesleyDavid: ya, considering it was small enough to carry in one hand
(No idea what happened to him tho :/, my second favourite cat ever)
@Adrian When you leave, those padawans are going to be running the place. You should feel good about the mess they're going to make.
And unless I miss my guess, they probably won't even attempt to fill your position.
@MichaelHampton I dunno. I genuinely like quite a few of the people here, and they're doing amazing work with really difficult people.
@MichaelHampton I think they will. It's a point of prestige for my boss that when he got promoted out that the position had to be split in two.
Doubtless. It's unfortunate that they have to work under such incompetent management.
@MichaelHampton This is true. At least they have a union of sorts, even if they're nearly worthless putzes.
23:39
@Adrian "When I left my last job, it took two people to match my level of incompetency!!"
@WesleyDavid Pretty much. Both eventually got cut loose. I was re-hired to fill one of them. Had no idea that my news boss was such an awful vacuum of leadership skill.
OTOH, the Python stuff is progressing nicely.
@Adrian: what python stuff?
@JourneymanGeek Teaching myself Python again. Hacked my way through a few scripts years ago and forgot most of it.
@Adrian: doing a class on it now, its pretty good
its about 3-4 weeks in tho
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. Once I finish learnpythonthehardway.org, I'm going to go through the MIT OpenCourseware lecture series.
Then I'm going to code up some scripts that monitor some of the services around here in Python and after a month or so of Python scripts, I'm going to go through a Perl refresher too.
Having a plan is rather nice to fending off despair.
23:45
quite ;p
I'll be back in 15 minutes to claim my gold badge.
@MichaelHampton ZAP! KABOOM!
who still says "HDD"?
I do >_>
I don't say HDD Drive tho
I never said "HDD".
23:53
@ewwhite I prefer the term "magneto-spin featuring rotational velocidensity"
HDDDD Drive
Or SSDDD
@ewwhite Herpa-Derpa-Derpa-Derpa-Derp Drive?
