Q: Is there a way to change the status of a virtual nic in osx from active to inactive?

I want to shut down virtual nic on my os x system. Can someone tell me the syntax for the ifconfig command to do that? (Also the syntax to bring it back up?) I was on the phone with Apple support and they were stumped. Thanks...

Why'd that end up here?

Not sure. Perhaps the 'virtual nic' people made thing people virtual machines which made people think SF?

I'm getting confused with the ever propagating stack exchanges.

Probably. It was mod-hammered too.

Pretty soon we'll have a ExtensionManager.OS7.MacOS.Apple.StackExchange.com

@WesleyDavid, if there is a big enough community for that, then maybe.

While I do have the send-to-anywhere button, I'm pretty sure bouncy-bouncy-posts are strongly discouraged.

That fits in the bad question, close and send nowhere.

Yeeaaah. Buh bye.

It's confusing to me because it seems like so many of these newer splinter stack exchanges have clear overlap with other ones.
Most notably SuperUser. I see questions on Apple.SE that make me think "Why is this not a SU question? Just by virtue of it being Apple related?" And then wonder if SU will be eventually cannibalized out to the splinter SEs.

I expect the new apple.se to take a good chunk of traffic off of SU.

I think the idea of having a subjective SE for StackOverflow (that being programmers.SE) is neat. Maybe we could get one for SF.

@WesleyDavid Eh, snarkden.stackexchange.com is more likely.

EveryoneIsCrazyExceptMe.stackexchange.com

I prefer to think of the fractured stack exchanges as something that could have been better handled with tags
This has all happened before -- take a look at usenet..

Or IRC.

I prefer the 'every question' is valid method with community tagging to help direct attention to or away from things. With complete isolation, you end up doing lots of navel gazing. ("Is this question really appropriate for this site?", etc)
Not that I think places like Quora do that well.

OTOH, if absolutely everything goes on a single site, don't you get Yahoo Answers?

It's a careful balance between general Q/A and community.

I saw the above and, no lie, my first thought was "What does this error have to do with ServerFault.com?!"

What the hell are these people on? Who on earth could possibly have thought this was a good idea after not taking backups for several weeks? :-(

Since it was posted on SO, I'm guessing it's a developer playing sysadmin for their SQL Server installation.
Now this isn't a blanket rule, but developers seem to think of server software and hardware to be infallible. It's RAID'ed - there's no need for backup...
It's SQL Server - Microsoft made it, it's not possibly going to crash....

4:32 PM
I have to agree Ben. It's enough to make you cry really.

Sure is

Hello

"The business" is often to blame, thinking it's all related to computers. Ooh I know, the devs "do" computers, they can look after these "server" things they need too
As we see from questions, I don't think there's a great deal of devs who actually like playing sysadmin
Hey @Jacob

I actually saw a question about this today (devs and sysadmins). There it is: serverfault.com/questions/29504/…
The worst idea was "sysadmins are failed developers". WHAAAAAT? :P

I saw that and kept well away from the flame bait
This has been bugging me for a while. Is it VirtualiSation or VirtualiZation? It's usually an American thing to replace an S with a Z, but in this case I'm not sure.

4:44 PM
@coredump I didn't fail at programming... I learned sys admin was much better :)

Hmm that markdown failed a little :'(

Being American I say virtualization

Most things I see are with a Z, but I'm not sure if it's because they've come from the USA or whether it is just spelt with a Z universally

I always supposed that UK english used Virtualisation and US english Virtualization.
@Jacob I always loved sysadmin'ing (that's even a verb?) than programming. I love my python, but I would probably die if all I had to do was to code all day, all days.

@coredump Agreed

4:48 PM
Well I thought that, but I see a disproportionate use of the z version to make me question whether the s version even exists.

@BenPilbrow Cambridge online dictionary doesn't have either version, but has "visualisation" and "centralisation", so I guess both versions are ok. I normally use the S version.

It's getting to me more than it probably should :/
I really ought to think about something sensible for a change.....

I say virtualisation
unless I'm writing for an American audience

@RobertMoir Us Americans...

I'm not saying one way is right and the other is wrong, Jacob, just that it is what it is

4:52 PM
I am american too. South american. So you have to write virtualização :P

heh

At least the discussion about sysadmins/devs gave me a good link omniti.com/seeds/what-is-web-operations
why people still suggesting webmin as a viable tool...

Hmm I think I'd get some even funnier looks when I presented our virtualização options :P

for sure

@BenPilbrow you will make the brazilian there happy.

4:56 PM
another example - if we assume that if it came from SO then it must be a dev asking
http://serverfault.com/questions/231610/what-role-does-virtualization-play-in-a-network-with-a-san/231617#231617
thinking that virtualisation is required to use a SAN

Fact, in every tech conference there's a 30% chance of a brazilian being present.
we are like a plague. :P

@RobertMoir I saw that and thought "you're kinda missing the point"

Well yeah but if you don't know, you don't know right

True
I started to answer, had this whole virtualization/virtualisation dilemma in my head for like the 20th time this year and by the time I'd got over it, 2 answers had been posted so I abandoned

sorry!

5:01 PM
I'm sure my answering of some questions causes others to abandon, so what comes around goes around... right?

indeedy

5:15 PM
haha, just saw on the right bar there your comment about cpanel @RobertMoir

2 hours later…
6:51 PM
@coredump I want to point out, that whenever I am doing a compromise investigation, the first two things I look for are phpmyadmin and webmin. More often than not, they're the reason :)

What will happen to question where the author is inadequate(serverfault.com/questions/231608/monitorix-using-nginx)? Question will never be solved?

Sam
9:51 PM
@alvosu if the author never chooses to accept an answer, it will remain unaccepted. However the answer will still help others.

Does anyone make SOHO VoIP Wireless routers anymore?
