12:00 AM
@tombull89 nope
chat will be up

Damn and blast.

@JourneymanGeek different DATACENTER

Missed rep capping on SuperUser by 5 points and I answered three questions in the last two hours that were brilliant and still got no upboats yet.

haha...I expect a blog post soon to say what was done. With pretty pictures and everything.

Peasants.

12:02 AM
@WesleyDavid: true fact. I was stoned on flu meds the first time i got a rep cap on SU

@tombull89 patches

@JourneymanGeek True fact. I was drunk on rage and contempt the first time I rep capped on SuperUser.

@WesleyDavid: You can't be a proper sysadmin without rage and contempt
6

@Zypher Do these patches effectively reject stupid questions in the future?

@mailq no just run of the mill windows updates

12:09 AM
@mailq There's too many kinds of stupid to programmatically detect them all

But it is worth a try. So these are probably just the pre-alpha patches for AI

@mailq instead, every time you see a stupid question, drink a shot. Eventually you'll stop seeing stupid questions.

I don't think so. After a few minutes I see them at least twice.

@mailq if you see them twice, take two shots

Then I'll see them thrice?

12:21 AM
noooo maintenance

SUM OF A BISCUIT!! I get an upvote 5 minutes after the date rolls over and miss rep capping.
Berzerker_Rage_Mode = enable

Someone answer this with a "seize all the roles" jpg.

Q: Seizing FSMO roles from dead Windows Domain Controller

DavidI've seen other questions and documents about doing this, but there are some things that still confuse me. Here are the documents and questions I've seen: Retire a Dead Windows 2003 Domain Controller Seizing FSMO Roles from Petri Using NTDSUtil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain co...

@ShaneMadden LOL
Now where is that broomstick guy. . .

@TomOConnor Do you have a Careers 2.0 page? Use that in your comment spree.

12:36 AM
mate of mine's dad died two years ago and all he left him a half completed small hotel in martinique, my mate was sick of london (and his girlfriend at the time) so jacked it all in - went over and has now finished this hotel, he's invited wifey and I over in the summer for free (though I imagine he'll want some basic IT work done for it :) ) - cool eh!

@Chopper3 Very nice!

yeah, made up, can't wait - just the two of us too

@Chopper3 Wonder what their ocean cable demarc point is like... =)
Or if it's all satellite. Probably satellite.

haha, it's all france telecom - I've checked already :)

EEEEEnteresting. Did anyone notice that when a line that started with an @ was starred, the star wall did not show the preceding @? But now, suddenly, the topmost star shows that lines that start with an @ are suddenly showing who it was sent to.
If that made any sense.
Oh, no, I get it now.

12:40 AM
Yeah, replies with an associated reply ID

If you start with a quote to a line like :2842654 it doesn't show
I still think that's cocked up.

@WesleyDavid Let's get markdown fixed first.

@ShaneMadden Markdown isn't broken (it just doesn't work)

Okay, let's make a plan:
Step 1: Firebomb John Gruber
Step 2: Firebomb Aaron Swartz
Step 3: Implement raw CSS in chat
@voretaq7 That was funny the first seven thousand times.

@WesleyDavid It's not supposed to be funny - just true

12:45 AM
Oh Superuser.
Luser: "How do I use a multi homed PC as a router?"
Me: "iptables"
Luser: "Great! My NICs don't show up in /etc/network/interfaces. How can I get them to be listed?"
Me: ಠ_ಠ

If I were going for funny I'd couch it in valid-but-unrecognized markdown & marvel at the fail :)

@voretaq7 You mean like: [tag:fucking-markdown-ಠ_ಠ]

@WesleyDavid Lesson: avoid SU

Because of course markdown doesn't like unicode.
[tag:fucking-markdown-ಠ_ಠ]
2
There, more star-able.

@WesleyDavid SPEAK ASCII YOU FOOL! There are no subtitles in tags!

12:47 AM
@voretaq7 8 bits for a character set should be enough for anyone.
Wow, I failed so hard I gave myself dieuhbeetus.

Seriously! Don't be greedy!

7 bit is OK for SMTP
so don't be tooooo greedy
What an offensive comment by me! serverfault.com/questions/345189/…

I'm offended by the question :/

@voretaq7 I am going to disable carrier VM, but that seems like a hack. 5-6 rings is a bit much to wait for...

@voretaq7 Flag it

1:01 AM
@Jacob you definitely have a problem there too - the carrier voicemail is just compounding it
@mailq Nah - I'll just man up n be quietly offended :)

Laid the "the internet is scared of role seizures for no good reason" hammer down on that question.

@ShaneMadden they SHOULD be rare tho :)

1:17 AM
@voretaq7 Sure, but half the articles that guy linked are like "make sure you 7-pass wipe the disks of the old role holder before seizing!!!", which is alarmist drivel.

1:30 AM
@ShaneMadden because just 1 pass is good enough?

@freiheit Hah, indeed. Though it can't be zeros, must be random data - or else the server might turn itself back on, connect to your domain, modify its own schema in conflict with a recent schema modification on another node, then replicate.
In other words: Beware the zombie domain controller!!

eh, does anyone actually remember that the 35 pass guttmann format was designed to cover nearly every possibility? ;p

It's definitely still an option in DBAN

@ShaneMadden: I think its case its mandated in some cases
(cases where the appropriate/quicker solution involves either a drill press, or thermite i would add)

@JourneymanGeek I assume those cases are ones where a major national government or fortune 100 has an significant interest in the data on that hard drive?

1:43 AM
@freiheit: I believe DOD requires 35 passes.
@freiheit: well, basically compliance i suppose. AKA cover thine arse.

(because, really, in any case where your data isn't worth $100k+ to somebody, a single pass of anything is good enough)

@JourneymanGeek DoD is the 7-pass one, I think.

@freiheit: with modern systems a single pass of zeros is good enough.
@ShaneMadden: my bad then.
In that case the 35 pass is only useful when you for some reason need to wipe a disk, and you don't know what crazyass encoding it uses and somehow, 35 years on, the damned thing still runs

An old job required physical destruction of not just the storage, but the RAM as well.

o0
shred it all?

1:46 AM
Yeah.. there was no justification, just a clueless policy maker that thought it sounded good.
We requested budget for an official RAM hammer.

Eh, at least he didn't demand destruction of processes since they have cache ;p

@JourneymanGeek That's what we have a hard drive degausser for. :)

@freiheit: i prefer to take them apart personally. I think a certain university whose old systems i got used to drill holes in em

Security requirement: Direct conversion to energy of all particles with mass used to store data in system at any time. Policy: Either fire them out of a cannon into the sun, or send them to North Korea for nuclear tests.

1:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek But then all the other sectors of data would still be recoverable by a company like drivesavers
(use a sander instead of a drill)

or muck up the read head and let the thing run

Bend the platters.

2:29 AM

4 hours later…
6:38 AM
Oh I hate, with fire, this whack-ass part replacement procedure.

@freiheit I believe that by the time you open the drive up, take it apart enough to get the voice coil magnets out of the head positioning assembly (super-strong magnets, 1001 uses), then take the platters off the spindle, you've taken care of anyone but CIA/NSA/TLA getting your data. For extra security, you could then take a hammer to the platters, but they make such nice wind chimes....
@Iain You wanna talk LAT? We had 3rd-party LAT software for an HP-UX and Win NT AS 3.51 (on Alpha) 'cause all our printers were using serial interfaces and were connected to the DECservers.

7:29 AM
There will be pointed emails aimed at Dell tomorrow. After I get some sleep.

7:47 AM
G'day

7:58 AM
@ShaneMadden some are ceramic and don't bend well

8:28 AM
and finally - sunrise
not that it makes much difference, it's still duller than a dull thing :(

at least it's less windy
it was blowing a gale last night

@TomOConnor yep, was quite windy here too overnight, if it stays dry I may get out on me bike later

@Iain I'm back at my parents in Malvern.. it waas so windy here that the chicken coop blew about 4ft along the garden

@TomOConnor it was windy enough that it woke me up but everything is still where it should be in the garden

@Iain That's always a good start. I don't like it when things blow around.

@Ward That sounds like something a company like DriveSavers could still get some data off of, though there'd certainly be some corruption

2 hours later…
11:05 AM
I love it when a database cluster goes down for an hour, at 4am, for no apparent reason.
Tricky one to explain to the customer

11:20 AM
"We've narrowed it down to one of three possibilities: A) Hardware error B) Software error C) Human error"

Pauska! Did you have a good xmas?
Also, upvote whoring. serverfault.com/a/345285/16732

I just think it's time I moved this SQL cluster off an unsupported platform and onto a more supported one

11:39 AM
@TomOConnor very well, thank you. Lots of great food and great alcohol. And you?

@pauska Very similar! Food and booze are the best bits of christmas. I've been back at my parents since the 23rd, so it's good to see the family again too :)

ya same here, been up north visiting my mother since 26th
plus all my childhood friends lives here

11:54 AM
Oops. I seem to have a lot of my name on the front page again. There should be a way to edit shit quietly.

> Happy New Year to All of you

@TomOConnor: something that would be nice but would never happen

@JourneymanGeek I'd like a userscript for bulk editing tags, too.

wow - only just woke up, well 20 mins ago anyway

12:13 PM
heartbeat: [15213]: info: No pkts missing from lonsbrndlb02!
Gee, thanks heartbeat.

Q: Lotus notes server

Martin cookHi I am after some assistance! My former employer has given excessive access to other employees to my account!! Can anyone advise they have provided two people access which I believe via lap top is full delegated access to read and write etc but they claim it was person read only write public doc...

@TomOConnor I feel the need to point out (as someone who does krb-auth on RHEL) that those libraries are, in fact, in the base RHEL repositories.
@TomOConnor My guess is that either:
1) He's a fuckwit and doesn't know how to install software, or
2) He isn't paying support and doesn't have access to install the software so he's trying to hack it in.

Must.... improve.... flag... .weight.....

@growse do it while you're under 3k rep. Once you get above that many flag options are converted to votes to close

flags everything

@Iain Indeed. As long as you don't do it during the DoucheyMod times of day then the VtC flags are epic.
Though, at this point, I want 10k for no reason other than to see the close tab under /review

1:25 PM
@ScottPack I'm only 1 flag away from 750.0000 (again)

Any way on the search I can find questions with a maximum number of votes? "votes" I believe specifies a minimum...

@Iain How nervous are you to throw it out?
@growse No, I tried that

Boo

What you'll have to do is search for your minimum, sort by vote, and go through the last pages.

@ScottPack I don't flag without good reason - the one that dropped me back to 740 was the same one that you had declined too

1:35 PM
@Iain For what you think is a good reason, sure.
I had another one declined that I thought was rather bullshit, but the one you're talking about was the most obviously awful.

@ScottPack I've only had 4 declined. One was definitely wrong as I resubmitted and it was accepted. One you and I agreed on, the other two I would argue but even so 3/4 out of >1100 isn't bad really

1:53 PM
I've had 7 declined out of 259. One wreaked of spam, and I flagged before checking out the account; which I later decided was in fact not spam (my bad). 3 in a row were a guy posting links to questions (wreaks of spam but I've got no proof).
I flagged serverfault.com/questions/55355/… as Low Quality, and it got declined.

@ChrisS I just downvoted and dropped a delete on it too - only 2 more required

Am I the only person who read this question and thought "wrong tool for the job"?

Q: How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

madhattaPardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size a...

Isn't this why they invented memcached?

I'm just mad that 1. It's a piece of sh*t "Answer", I flagged as such and got declined 2. Even if a mod disagrees with #1 (how they could possibly argue that position I don't know) it's obviously in the "Helpful" spirit....
@growse You're lucky he didn't store the table in a 10GB array
That's probably my biggest and more frequent gripe with programmers, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should... and they don't seem to get it. Same goes for small shop SysAdmins..

@ChrisS I think there is at least one mod that believes you should downvote crap rather than flag it as such

Well that mod needs to be reeducated then. Wrong answers and half-baked attempts should be downvoted. Blatant crap should be deleted.

2:06 PM
I wish we knew our mods better. Now that gramps stepped down, I think I've only ever spoken to two, and have only seen enough from one other to understand him.

gramps stepped won?

ayup gramps !

@Chopper3 eh?

@ScottPack EXACTLY!!! This is what I/we were griping about... Mods who are disconnected from the community (not that chat comprises the whole community, or any one particular facet of SF for that matter)

ah - 42 dude, 42

2:09 PM
@Chopper3 You look older with the giant white beard...

@ChrisS It's definitely a hard line, because while we shouldn't be so uppity to say that chat users are the community, it's really the only place where we can do proper community building within the system.

that said my son did just turn 16 so legally he could have kids making me a grandad - and some guys I grew up with are already grandads so fair enough

Otherwise, it's just a bunch of people reading reactions to something else.
@Chopper3 I knew a woman who was a grandmother at 26, so there's that.
Some people I went to high school with now have kids in college. That really freaked me out.

@ChrisS if you check the top lists then many of the people active here in chat are towards the top of them
@ScottPack my wife was an aunty at -2

@ScottPack True.. But I think there's a number of ways they could participate more so the community knows them better... Chat, posting Questions/Answers, Comments to Posts, Meta... I don't mean to be too harsh on the mods, and it certainly isn't all of them, but a few don't do anything but mod and I take strong exception to that.

2:13 PM
@Iain My aunts/uncles are in the same boat. Of course, 6 kids spread out over 20 years will do that.

@Iain True, though I wouldn't want to say "If you don't participate in $AREA_OF_FS then you aren't participating in the community"

@ScottPack indeed

Is there a flag reason for "looks like the user is trying to do something devious / anti-social / criminal"?

@ChrisS indeed not but it is possible to participate in many aspects if you have the time / are inclined to

@growse: I think you could use the free form text box for that

2:16 PM
@growse other or just pop it in the vtc room and let us deal with it

Looking at this one:

you guys don't have a talk to a mod chat room?

Q: How to rotate the IP's

ramesh.mimitI have six IP's for a server. I have assigned them on virtual interface like one primary IP is on eth0 and rest 5 are on eth0:1,eth0:2 and so on.. I want to rotate all of these IP's after a certain time may be 1 hour or 2 hour interval. But not sure how I can do that without getting the downtime...

@JourneymanGeek the mods that chat appear here

@Iain: Well, that too.

2:21 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nope. Mods have their own room (The Teacher's Lounge); but if a user want to talk to a Mod they'd have to find them here (or use Meta or e-mail).

Ahh, k

g'day animal abusers

I never felt comfortable in the Teacher's Lounge, in fact it was being dragged into them that made me realise I didn't want to be a mod any more

Hm. In practice, what is the difference between a user with 55k reputation and an official moderator?

@Chopper3 So you didn't much care to be summoned? Was the circle too well constructed?

2:38 PM
@MilesErickson I know as far as the non-trilogy sites, moderators are elected to be, more or less, housekeepers.
@MilesErickson someone with a high reputation you can assume has a fairly wide breadth of knowledge and is a regular on the board.

Q: Samba3 GPO Alternative

jvffSamba4 isn't ready for production so I'm stuck with Samba3 but I want GPOs for my Windows 7 clients. Is there a way to implement GPOs or something like it using Samba3 without resorting to manually creating login scripts to set registry settings? I'm guessing using the login scripts is the only w...

What's a diplomatic way of saying "I heard Microsoft have a product that can do this"?

@PeterGrace Perhaps the question was not specific enough. Do moderators have significant powers differing from those of a 20K+ user, or do they just have additional responsibilities?

big lol at that one.

Those who don't understand Active Directory are condemned to reinvent it, poorly.
5

Moderators can kill you in the middle of the night, and no-one asks questions.

2:42 PM
I have to ask why people jump though all kinds of hoops to avoid the "obvious" product like that. By the same token, if someone asked me to set up a NFS server I wouldn't reach for Windows Server and install MS' "Services for Unix" if I had a Linux installer handy.

@RobMoir a lot of the time, it's "but the license is too expensive!"

@RobMoir Lunix is free. Time has no value, therefore it's a net savings for everyone!

@growse The license is cheap, but the headache can last for days...

Yeah. We've all heard it before: "Linux is free" - only if your HR department really can divide by zero.
4

@jscott Spoken like a true public employee!

2:44 PM
@RobMoir I'm a linux guy, but, believe it or not, I usually use Windows for NFS servers.
Windows 2008R2's NFS stack is pretty well behaved.

Whoa, now, that's one I haven't heard before.

@PeterGrace ...

@PeterGrace So Scumbag Steve is really just an older picture of you?

Haha, maybe. Maybe.
The caveat is that usually when I'm doing NFS, I'm also doing it for the benefit of windows clients
so it just makes sense to keep the protocol family together.

it must have improved a lot recently, because managing Microsoft's services for unix felt an awful lot like managing Lotus Notes on OS/2

2:46 PM
@MilesErickson there are housekeeping powers that mods have that high-rank users don't.

I actually saw OS/2 in the wild a year ago. First time since I stopped using it personally in 1995.

i suppose using NFS on windows server to serve windows clients using NFS makes some sense. Assuming there's a sane reason to use NFS between Windows machines...
5

@MilesErickson I can't really comment on it myself because on the stacks I do have "moderator" on, it's a modified type of moderator that we have as sysadmins at StackExchange.

@ScottPack Nothing that bothered me in itself, more that it's a place for mods on other sites, the majority significantly less busy than SF, moaning about their workloads and crappy users - I didn't need that and I didn't feel it was a place for me

They finally had to break down and give me moderator on meta so I could, ya know, do my job

2:48 PM
@PeterGrace Fair. Just a passing curiosity.

@RobMoir You can always install Cygwin on your Windows servers, compile Samba and share files with your Windows clients that way...

@Chopper3 That's awful. They make SF mods hang out with mods from other sites?!

@Chopper3 So things like, "Come ON guys! That's my 3rd flag this week. FFS slow down!"?

to be fair @chopper3, any site that had vgv8 visit it had at least one user worth moaning about

@MilesErickson no mod-tools, i.e. I can't dig as deep into user data to spot spammers for instance, none of the reports etc. That said I don't miss any of it one bit, really quite a weight off my shoulders, wish I'd done it earlier - just took one ungrateful little twat to push me over the edge

2:50 PM
Ungrateful little twats seem to be on an uptick
6

Nah, you just notice them more sometimes... But they're always there.

@MilesErickson yeah, basically

lots of people out there that seem to think that volunteers on sites like this are actually their staff or something. Not the same as moderation by a long chalk I know but I've seen a few people here and on another site I do a lot of non-IT posting on who come to expect, take for granted and then demand answers, sometimes in general and sometimes from a specific person

I did however get to choose my charity of the year for SE to donate to - which was deeply cool of them to do

@Chopper3 I cannot imagine having patience for spending quality time with the moderators of farmville.stackexchange.com.

2:52 PM
LOL

@MilesErickson does that exist?

my wife's obsessed with 'Tiny Tower', it's the simplest game in the world, makes Tic Tac Toe look like D&D - yet she's all over it

@Chopper3 SimTower anyone?

I'm actually writing a document right now, due 'this year' - nearly done but it's bored the shit out of me tbh

2:56 PM
I have to do my expense report for Dec... Really need to get it done, they owe me over $300.

@Chopper3 "This app is incompatible with all of your devices."

I used to work at NCR and their financial sales teams used to have an annual competition in December to see who could run up the largest expense bill that month, one guy put in a claim for over £28k/$40k!
@growse it's a DR site design * yawn *

wow

@RobMoir lot of spearmint rhino receipts

@Chopper3 It's right there between Lego and Hermeneutics... no, not really, but your reasonable doubt makes the point.

2:58 PM
heh... what a winner :-)
well facebook....

@Chopper3 I can just see the CFO getting reamed for having projected that the company would come in under budget for the year, until....

this is for 2012/2013 budget, this is just a HLD that'll turn into detailed design that'll turn into kit lists/orders, so a quarter away from spend

@Chopper3 ...although I suppose that it almost doesn't matter in a company that size.

it's my first all-vSphere5-Site-Recovery-Manager-based DR design though - which is nice
extensively use v4 but v5 SRM is a lot more flexible and storage gnostic

At least you've got multiple sites.

3:03 PM
wait, your storage is jewish?

this is just a two-site'r
@PeterGrace all my storage is :)

Gnosticism (from gnostikos, "learned", from gnōsis, knowledge) is a scholarly term for a set of religious beliefs and spiritual practices common to early Christianity, Hellenistic Judaism, Greco-Roman mystery religions, Zoroastrianism (especially Zurvanism), and Neoplatonism. A common characteristic of some of these groups was the teaching that the realisation of Gnosis (esoteric or intuitive knowledge), is the way to salvation of the soul from the material world. They saw the material world as created through an intermediary being (demiurge) rather than directly by God. In most of th...
Just in case anyone took my remark to be offensive.

I used to work for a company that had two sites, about 200 miles apart. Almost ideal for a sysadmin who is also a pilot.

also, boobs.

for brits; the third shittest UK retail chain (after Lush and Past Times) Hawkins Bazaar has finally gone into receivership; bbc.co.uk/news/business-16366088 serves them right for being utterly crappy
@PeterGrace I'm part jewish so don't worry, you couldn't offend me

3:38 PM
I've never heard of Hawkins Bazaar or Past Times
Lush isn't nice though

Whenever someone mentions being offended to me, I just direct them here:

@Chopper3 huh...always interesting to have a look around but I don't know anyeone that ever bought anything from there.

@TylerShads this guy is pretty funny.

@TylerShads That's pretty brilliant

3:51 PM
I love it
SF Chat - The place where people like your funny video and don't star, yet if you mention 'boobs' in any capacity, you will get too many stars.

point taken
If I run out of stars though, I'm blaming you

The joke was honestly to see if that were to get 20 stars as a joke ;)
but it seems unsucessful

We should have played that continuously during the chatpocalypse
mmm, hot chocolate

I think I might have posted it once or twice

I read through the whole transcript of that day. I don't recall it. Anyways, water under the bridge and all that

4:04 PM
keyword is think, something i dont do often

It's Friday, and I'm high. This is how I feel

Although I do have to work tomorrow as well

MaxCDN appear to be awesome, but the big gay fox puts me off somewhat.

That's actually a big gay leopard. And I'm not about to question his life's choices. That's his decision

not so much a gay fox, but it does look like a 'Furry' to me

Maybe the NetDNA CEO is a giant Furry
It could even be corporate policy
which makes the fact that they've built a fairly decent CDN while in furry costumes quite impressive

4:16 PM
Is he supposed to be a space leopard? I'm confused about their choice of a mascot.

Thundercat something cross I think.

4:32 PM
I've got a mate that's a furry - nice bloke, was featured in a sooty video as a child - sure that's got nothing to do with it

@Chopper3 wat...

complex...

Scratch that, I don't want to know

I fear we're passing the tipping point of popularity / stupid questions on SF. Turning into SO more and more....
"HAI I GOT THIS SERVER THING ON EBAY HOW DO IA MKES IT WORKENING????"

@growse just keep tossing them in vote to close

4:44 PM
Fantastic Gravatar @Iain

Son's playing SWTOR and just got to go to Coruscant - we both got SO giddy

@Chopper3 Isn't it great?

@Holocryptic It's my new years outfit

I'm RDP'd to my home box right now, running missions

Just wait till Valentine's day. Then the shit's really gonna get real

@Chopper3 Talking to a WoW player of 6 years (me) would you recommend this game?

@TylerShads Yes

@Holocryptic DID I ASK YOU WHELP?!?!?!?!

@TylerShads Son, I will slap the WoW loving snot out of you

4:48 PM
@Holocryptic None to slap out, haven't played since I hit 85 2 weeks after Cata launch ;)

@TylerShads HIGHLY - it's best bits are the bits where WoW's gone a bit stale

I keep asking around because I'm still debating if I should get it due to it being so similar it might dissuade me no matter how enjoyable it is plus I've never played KOTOR so I don't know if I'd be lost at some points. I like Star Wars yeah, but I'm definitely not a die hard fan as I was with Warcraft 3 at the dawn of WoW.

@TylerShads You won't get lost. The events of KOTOR are 300 years in the past

there's no linkage to KOTOR
it's just a SW world without any chars from the films

It has it's own story line
Multiple story lines, really. There's a different story for each character class

4:51 PM
@Holocryptic And the events of Warcraft 3 were 10 years before WoW, but they still included A TON of references/fan service/fun stuff for WC players

@TylerShads Are there references, yes. Will you miss out on key plot elements because of it? No.

@Holocryptic I knew that much which intrigues me, though if I do anything, I'd just be a vindictive sith basterd because hey why not?

Just trust me. Its not like I'm going to make money off of you buying it. It's a damn good game.
It even better than gasp... Skyrim
There. I've blasphemed myself for the whole Internet to see

I know that, I would pick it up if it was single player no problem. It's the fact that it's an MMO which is why I'm debating it. MMO = leveling + endgame. The endgame from what I hear is only 1 raid so far with plans to add more, which I'm intrigued if the 1 is good enough for the moment to begin wtih.

@Holocryptic not sure about that, I can just watch my son playing skyrim all day long - have no wish to play it myself but I like watching him

4:55 PM
@Chopper3 I may only say that because I've loved Star Wars since I was really little. But still...

me too

morning hosers

Still a couple minutes till noon. So I'll give you that.

barely

right, document sent, work laptop off, games to play, beer to drink, pizza to get down my shirt - out

Don't get me wrong, SWTOR looks like an amazing game. My skepticism comes from my vast cheapskate-ness plus the fact of playing an MMO for 6 years burned me out from them in its entirety for a bit. I did research on WoW for about a month before I decided to buy it on launch and the first few weeks of it was practically worthless but slowly became fun.

well you're clearly more hardcore than me (in this area anyway ;) ) but as a casual user SWTOR fricking ROCKS

I raided WoW until Cata, was even one of the lucky groups of people to see the original Naxx when it came out before BC, I love the effort the endgame took (Wrath was an absolute joke) and wonder if I can get that spark back from this game.

I consider myself a mid-level MMO player. I don't usually do raids and such, but I do high level instances when I get the chance, and I think SWTOR fricking ROCKS

That's another thing, not just raids, but max level stuff, there's also got to be ways to improve the character I leveled just solo or in small parties to keep me interested too.

It's not strictly comparable to WoW, as they take a different twist on how they do instances and such. And there's more too it than tank n spank the instances
@TylerShads It is highly customizable
You can pick up gear at level 5 that you like, and keep modding it so that it stays with you the whole time if you like how it looks on your character
There's a lot of vanity type stuff like that

5:06 PM
I might just end up giving it a month, let some raiding guilds post thoughts and decide then.
I do like that
I used to be a OMFGRAIDRAIDRAID type of person in vanilla WoW, hence is why I got to Naxx, you basically had to have no outside life to get in there, but I was like 16 and that didn't matter too much, but then college hit and I had to tone down a lot of what I did in the game and got behind a lot but it was ok because I made it work and got in a good guild that let me MT as a bit of a newbie to the content and eventually got to higher ends on my own time, so it was a perfect mixture
Then wrath hit and I was able to do full raids in the hour break I had between classes, which just made me sad =[

Yeah, I hear the Wrath end content was... lacking

1 raid per tier, essentially meaning you were doing the same dungeon for the 4-9 months it took them to release a new one every week if you wanted anything. Nerfing content if enough people weren't passing it. Allowing you to get raid-tier items from just running 5-man dungeons (which were AOE fests) effectively making raiding near-useless anyway unless you wanted TOP tier. The only thing that expansion got right was revamping the leveling content which was amazing.
How in the flying hell do I have a mosquito bite on the back of my leg, which is constantly covered by jeans in freakin December

@TylerShads Probably got you when you were nekkid in bed

Dude, watching me sleep is a bit creepy

Haven't you learned anything about me yet? I'm a bit creepy to say the least

5:20 PM
I mean, watching and not joining

@TylerShads I'm proud to say that your two long expositions about WoW, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about
3

@Aaron You should be proud of that.
Even my gf knows most of what those paragraphs entailed, mostly from dealing with me while I play it :)

@Aaron I'm with you on this one. Moon-speak, all of it.

Believe me when I say, I can go a lot deeper and talk a lot more about it. But one thing people always ask me is if I think it was a waste of money even though I don't play anymore. My answer is always no because I had fun at the time and that is what is important. Whether I play it now or not.

Crazy moon language indeed

5:26 PM
@Aaron It means nothing to me either. I haven't really played games since WoW started and everyone left NWN

how much does wow cost anyways?

15/month
you can get the original game + expo 1 for like $20 US nowadays I believe
and I'm also pretty sure it's actually Free-to-play for the first 20 levels, but you can only get the original classes/races

so, do I have to come in and get permission to remove my hat? (;

@RebeccaChernoff You have permission to change it to a New Years party hat

lol
I don't have one of those (:

5:37 PM

One possible hat was added to the Santa hat question:

Q: It's Santa Time!

HolocrypticLet's do this. What with the DramaLlama being out in full force, I think it's time to take a breather and bring the funny back. To wit: I propose the Santification of your gravatars till after the new year. Some of us have already gotten started. You can use the image as your baseline. or ...

that's not on my gravatar though q:

Lovely: brain-eating parasites.

Is it sad that I didn't know what a neti pot was until reading that?

serverfault.com/suggested-edits/4546 - leaning towards reject on this, thoughts?

5:54 PM
@ShaneMadden yep - reject

@Ward That's why I try not to shove things up my nose other than my finger

@Holocryptic I don't want to know what you shove up your nose. Oranges, probably.
