Oh hey
Neat
@badp LOL. These are the things I miss whilst asleep! :(
That reminds me I need to get a why do you want up
@GodEmperorDune IT's short, but it's hard to fit in anything longer in the character limit present. I'm already at the character limit, actually. like exactly. I have 0 characters left to type.
@Wipqozn wow, well done
@Unionhawk - @Frank's added it as a potential question to the question collection meta: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/a/11633/28182, meaning we'll prob have to answer it in the next phase anyway
00:17
@GodEmperorDune So I'll expand on it, but I'd appreciate it if you asked me this in a comment so I can post it below my nomination :)
@Wipqozn IIRC I have 7 chars left
@Wipqozn i've already asked the most important question here:
in The Bridge, 5 mins ago, by GodEmperorDune
candidate @Wipqozn what is your position on the posting of filthy pictures in the bridge?
@Robotnik I had about 1700, but that was way too much ( I wasn't even done saying all I wanted to say), so I had to spend close to an hour trimming it down.
I also had to move my turtle avatar jok- err, promise, into a comment. It was a terible.
@Wipqozn we're gonna report you to shog if you don't keep the turtle promise
i have 12 characters left
00:20
@GodEmperorDune the tl;dr of why though is essentially what I said. I just want to help the site maintain a high level of quality, which is the main thing mods do. The reasons why I think I'd be good at that are listed in my nomination, and also factor into my motivation in the sense of "this is why I should run and not someone else"
Ditto. I had stats in there about edits, my tag badge progress, my up/down ratio, meta contributions, specific moderation examples etc etc. All cut :'(
rip
it details the specific kind of monkey you need to be too y get a gun in youre hands
@badp I thought 'light reading' was used ironically. It really is light reading
@Robotnik short and sweet
@badp Any reason you linked to the SO one? here's the same link, but on Arqade
00:23
railrekt
@Robotnik IT's probably a test, to see if we're paying attention.
@Wipqozn >tfw we actually end up being mods on SO instead.
@Robotnik i mean @badp tried to warn you
@Unionhawk you've been here a long time, why don't you have the sportsmanship or copy editor badges yet?
@Dragonrage you are missing a lot of the notable badges, including civic duty (for voting 300 times). Why don't you vote more?
00:52
also, @Dragonrage, I'm happy to see you decided to enter the race. You're the only user I can think of who has been who for less than a year that I'd even consider voting for. You seem to be a really level headed guy who's really eager to help the site grow, and always seem to be trying to grow your understanding of how the site works, as well as improve your skills at site meta.
@GodEmperorDune I feel that upvoting/downvoting every thing is not the best practice, so I tend to be more selective of what I upvote/downvote than others may be.
@Wipqozn thank you for the kind words. I really enjoy using this site, and want to do what I can to help keep it a high quality and fun site to use. I also appreciate all of the advice you and others have given me.
also @GodEmperorDune in case you are interested, i am 38 votes away from civic duty
@Dragonrage its more a question of using/not using the tools that SE provides for you. voting is such a basic tool
its one of the first privileges granted, the most gentle forms of feedback
with modship, all the close/reopen/deletes and flags become binding, and your diamond signature will be all over them
@GodEmperorDune i want to make sure i use them correctly, and not to favor some people over others. When i first started using the site I noticed I tended to vote more for people I knew than people I didn't, so I stopped voting as much until I was able to guarantee to myself that I was voting because of quality and accuracy rather than for favoritism
once I was sure that I could do that, I started voting again
@Dragonrage I'm glad to see you saw that bias and took steps to correct it. Voting based on the content and not the user is really important, but unfortunately a mistake that many (seem) to make. It's why we've had meta drama pop up about "VOTE FOR THIS AND NOT THIS" a few times.
01:02
@GodEmperorDune As far as sportsmanship goes, I like to upvote good answers alongside mine (I'm sitting at 42% completion), but often I either don't check back to see if new answers are there, or even more often, other answers are not there.
@Unionhawk i think this is especially true if you tend to be the first one to answer. i have arqade always open on another tab, so i get a notification whenever a new question is posted, and if i know the answer, i will post one once i get a source if i can find one. once someone has posted an answer, the likely-hood of others being posted tends to drop, especially if the first answer covers all points the question is asking about
A cursory reexamination of the first page found 7 or so answers worth voting on in the "go get this badge" page, with most of the rest being either deleted or not great quality
As far as copy editor goes, I think I probably skip a lot more than I should on "first posts", but at the same time it's kind of hard because I don't want to be accused of pushing an agenda of making edits that go against the intent of the author, or making edits that are too minor even though they contain all of the grammar edits necessary to make a post grammatically correct.
And I think that's something I need to work on and improve especially given my belief that we should be showing users the way, rather than telling users they're going the wrong way with no real further direction other than not that way
01:30
@GodEmperorDune did i answer your question you posted as a comment sufficiently enough to your liking, or do you want me to expand more?
01:46
@Dragonrage i'm sure i'll find more things to pester yall with
I'm almost the opposite when it comes to edits, ie. I'll fix grammar/formatting/tagging without asking, edit in info that's been commented by the OP (most likely after users request clarification), attempt to make the title more descriptive than "Minecraft problem" or "Overwatch stats". But then I'm one of the more prolific editors on the site.
I mean, in the worst case the OP rolls back, but I've never once had a complaint that the edits were not constructive or helpful.
@Robotnik and thats why you have all the noteworthy badges (except for outspoken, which you explained already)
02:11
@Robotnik I guess the main takeaway here is yes I should practice what I preach, since editing questions and answers to be better than they are rather than just good enough given what they were is the better way to go as far as "showing users the way" goes
02:52
@GodEmperorDune I wouldn't consider it pestering, I would consider it you doing your part to make sure the best candidates get elected. I'm looking forward to more or yours and other people's questions.
user15026
I think it's good because like...we don't think about this stuff most of the time
user15026
so its a good thought exercise for people
03:28
@AshleyNunn Agreed. A lot of the time any actions we take is only viewed by a very small subset of people. Meta discussions hit more people but even still we don't usually introspectively look back at our previous contributions and analyse them too thoroughly and/or explain why we do what we do.
04:20
@Robotnik so I think it's a good time to bring up the skeletons in your closet. Why are you so mean to sanic?
And where are all those fancy machines you used to fly?
05:09
I'm not mean to Sonic, that's just what the mainstream media says, we're actually pretty good friends.

And due to budget cuts they got replaced with quicktime events in later Sonic games

Hey guys - this is my first election as a voter - how do I cast my vote?
@Polyducks hi @Polyducks, the election hasn't started yet
right now users are nominating themselves
after the nomination is done, if there are 11 or more candidates, there will be a primary election (vote up/down on each candidate, top 10 candidates move to real election)
otherwise it jumps straight to regular election, where you get a handful of votes to cast for the multiple moderator slots
long story short, there's no vote yet
but once primary or election phase starts, you will have voting buttons on the main election page
08:36
Ah I see! So this is the nomination phase. I read it as 'the vote closes in five days'
Thanks, @GodEmperorDune

2 hours later…
10:59
@GodEmperorDune To be honest I'm not ahuge fan of the wording of this question, since I feel it misrepresents the situation, as well as how I acted in it. The issue there wasn't a case of people disagreeing, it was that twobugs got frustrated with strix and I and he wanted to leave the conversation. He asked us to stop engaging him, and I did - untlil he inerted himself back into the conversation again, at which point I took it to mean he wanted to invovle himself again.
I maintain that I didn't do anything wrong in that conversation, and certainly wasn't rude to twobugs. The exampels he quoted of me being "passive aggressive" weren't the case at all, and was that twobugs was taking something personally and to be directed at him when it wasn't at all.
Being a moderator is not always about being nice. Sometimes you have to be not nice.
I also maintain that one user getting frustrated with a conversation on a perfectly reasonable topic isn't reason for that conversation to stop, it's a reason for that user to remove themselves from the conversation so they can calm down.
And suggesting users remove themselves from a conversation if they're getting frustrated is a thing I've done in the past, and is something I'll continue to do in the future. In fact the only reason I didn't bring it up sooner in that conversation is because twobugs already said he was going to leave, so it seemed unneeded, but instead he decided to stick around.
Now, in a situation where the case is just of me disagreeing with another user....well, I just discuss the issue with them. I make sure to express my stance as best I can. I listen to the other user, and try to get an understanding of what their stance is, and why. I ask myself "Is there any merit to what they have to say?", and respond accordingly (i.e. That wouldn't work because X or Yeah, I see how that might work, but problems Y and Z are huge issues we'd need to resolve).
Sometimes I'll even have my stance changed, like in that case of the starcraft 2 question I linked in my post. OTher times I may find that although I disagree with a users stance for the most part, their stance may have some ideas I didn't consider, and I think are good. So even if I think the stance as a whole is poor, I may want to incorporate the good ideas of their stance into my own, to form a new stance.
Really folks disagreeing isn't a bad thing, it's a good thing. It's how we arrive at the right decisions. Folks rarely are able to know the perfect solution right out of the gate, it usually takes multiple folks putting their heads together and hashing out. That's why SE is community run, after all, because it takes multiple folks putting their heads together discussing site policy to arrive at the right decision.
Now sure, some argument can become heated,and we've all been there, but that's just a case of folks needing to step back from the conversation for a bit. Which is something I've suggested in the past, and is a pretty standard thing people suggest when it happens, really. And when folks aren't willing to step back, that's when mod really get involved and start freezing rooms, and maybe even handing out suspensions. but the issue isn't that "users disgree", it's that...
...some or all of the users involved are breaking that "be nice policy", and are getting rude and hostile. And, really, the proper response to a mod as that is really just a matter of how many folks are getting upset. If it's just one or two users in the conversation who are going past that "be nice" point, or are getting super frustrated, then it's just those users you need to deal with. You don't need, nor should, shut down the whole conversation.
It's when most of the folks in the conversation, or most of the folks in the chat, are getting frustrated or breaking "your nice" that you need to start freezing rooms and shutting down conversations.
that's a lot of text
but the tl;dr is users disagreeing isn't a problem, but folks getting frustrated or breaking nice is. As a mod, if it's only one or two users getting frustrated or breaking nice I'd just suggest they leave the conversation. If they continue, and are well into breaking be nice, I'd either kick them from the room or give them chat suspension.

If most of the folks (or most of the room) is getting frustrated and upset then I'd ask everyone to just move on to a new line of conversation, and if folks continue to argue, and are just growing increasingly frustrate and breaking "be nice" I'd free
And, if I was one of the folks involved in the conversation, and I was mod, I'd probably hit up another mod in one of their private mod chatrooms to step in, since it might not be right for me to start doing room freezing and suspensions if I'm involved in the conversation.
11:29
that's a shitqozn of words
@badp Yes
do we need to read those words
@badp You can probably get by with just the tl;dr
I just looked here and it was a wipalanche of words
I'm liking all these new words you're making.
11:31
I have words, best words, word list, five longer, @Unionhawk pays, blah blah blah blah
I don't have that kind of money man
Who do you think I am, not a college student?
are you in cool leg
then you can afford cool leg
I think I agree with Wipqozn. Adhering to "be nice" doesn't mean being obscenely polite even when other people are being jerks, it means handling things in a way to try and avoid them escalating. If someone is being a jerk, telling them so isn't being a jerk yourself.
11:47
@TZHX Yup. The best part of moderating, if I'm honest, is witnessing sick burns handed down by other mods and CMs.
Here's a question for the other mods: Are mods expected/required to not use the ignore user feature in chat?
@Wipqozn There is no policy
Chat moderation is a bit of a grey area, since it's nobody's explicit job
Plenty of site mods take no part in chat moderation, and that's fine
Okay, just curious. Because there a few users I have on ignore since I just find them to be annoying, and although I will check the transcript when it looks like drama is happening involving them, I'm curious if I'm expected to just never ignore folks in the future if I was elected.
However, active moderators who do use chat need to keep order. If all moderators have a user on ignore that's a problem
yeah, that makes sense.
11:58
For the record, I have people on ignore, but I usually show posts, particularly if it seems like they're stirring things up
@fredley My preferred method would be something like this, if elected. Ignore those users, but show posts when it looks like trouble. Honestly if elected it would likely be the kind of thing I'd need to figure out as I went along. I'd probably just unignore them all to start, because FRESH BLOOD MUST BE BEST MOD EVER. but after I've gotten more experience I may put a few users on ignore again, and see if I'm still able to properly moderate chat by just showing their posts...
...when it looks like there's trouble happening, or they seem to be posting a lot (since in some situations the ignores users are the "I spam a lot of non-sense images" users)
but really that's not anything I need to worry about unless I'm actually elected.
12:16
does one need to be a regular / popular member of The Bridge to be a successful mod?
@TZHX No. We have, and have had, multiple mods who don't take part much in bridge fun.
@Wipqozn Most mods figure it out as they go along
@GodEmperorDune FWIW, I thought his response there was perfect.
user15026
13:18
@TZHX I don't think so.
user15026
@Wipqozn I personally don't, but I don't think that others should avoid it if they feel it is needed. The tool is there for a reason.
@Sterno Thanks
@AshleyNunn cool, thanks
14:05
I'm again sorry for my rants yesterday.
@TZHX Probably half of the mods in the site's history were not really Bridge-frequents.
Every one of them had shown up on the Bridge at various occasions, but only a few of them were really high frequency on visits.
My motive to become a mod is none (other than helping the community). I have no (monetary) gain out of it. Arguably, not having any motives is good, because when you have no motives, you have no reason to stop (compared to that motive going and you leaving the position). I spent my last few months here, and I'm starting to understand how everyone thinks. I believe that I can show everyone that I'm worthy by the election time.
I agree that I'm not in my best days to be a mod (last days of school, the most important exams are in last few days, barely getting any sleep. Plus I've did stuff that'd show that I'm not worthy to be a mod in the past, regaining trust would be way easier with time), an election in about 6 months would be way better for me.
@GraceNote Do you know if a former non-protem mod has stepped down then run for mod a second time before?
@fredley Well I know a former pro-tem-and-then-elect has stepped down but then ran for moderator later.
However, I believe that I can change your minds in the upcoming days and therefore won't withdraw. In fact, I might even do a stylish script to remove that button.
14:12
@GraceNote Who was that?
But one who wasn't a pro-tem to begin with, not off the top of my head.

@Wipqozn you dun goofd

@GodEmperorDune That's not a problem for me at all. Just because I didn't vote for them doesn't mena I didn't think they'd be good mods, I'm just limited in who I can vote for. Even if I did think they'd be bad mods, I think they've all turned out to be good mods, so wouldn't matter what I though then anyways.
There wasn't really a bad candidate on the ballot
