@ardaozkal from personal experience, losing an election is tough. you put yourself out there, maybe you tell yourself you're just running for lulz, but when the votes come in and you didn't win... its a deflating kinda feeling
@ardaozkal If you have changed, great, but frankly I don't think any of us have seen any real evidence that that's the case (which is why we're giving you a hard time). Words are easy (especially on the internet). Actions are hard, and building trust way harder still.
If you did something as simple as losing your cool at someone in chat, or maybe make a few mistaken close votes accidental, then sure, 3 months is plenty of time for us to be like "yeah, no big deal, everyone makes mistakes". But what you did is just a lot more serious than that.
I believe there's still several people who have him on ignore
@KevinvanderVelden Which is another thing.
@GodEmperorDune I joined for the "lulz" but I see myself as someone who can do that. I don't care about winning. I lost many stuff in the past and am used to it.
user15026
22:01
I suspect if I had to guess, there are people who have current mods on ignore....
user4704
Can you put a on mod on ignore?
user4704
Somebody ignore me.
@ardaozkal If you nomination isn't serious then please withdraw.
@JoshPetrie Done
@JoshPetrie Yes, it'll even work
user4704
22:02
Frank you smell.
3
user15026
@ardaozkal If you don't care about winning, why run?
@ardaozkal you should run if you want to win
It even has a neat whisking action.
user4704
Huh.
or at least if you want to be a mod
user4704
22:02
That seems amusing.
@JoshPetrie there's been disagreements between users and mods where we've tested this before =p
@Wipqozn I'm serious. I do want to be a mod, but I have no reason to. My reason is "lulz", but my intention isn't.
People can ignore mods, but one of the main pain points I'd run into as mod is that I'd have to unignore people.
@AshleyNunn I answered that before.
Since taking those duties seriously is important. Even if you don't like someone.
22:03
@Frank I have people on ignore so that they can't ping me, but usually I set their posts to still be visible. But yeah, that's a pain point.
to be fair, we sometimes do elect to ignore some people
our sanity matters
but yes I try to minimize that
@ardaozkal Wait, you have no reason, but your reason is "lulz"?
never forget, health first ~
The gist of what I'm saying is, being a mod isn't fun and games.
@ardaozkal I'm not really sure what that means, but I take it to mean you don't take the position of modship seriously.
22:04
It's serious business, and a dirty job.
You take flak for the littlest things.
@Frank Pretending it is makes it easier to cope though!
@fredley If I get elected, I am so de-ownering you. :P
@ardaozkal Yes, "for the lulz". That's not a good reason to run for mod. It's a terrible reason.
@Wipqozn I mean that I have no gain from being a mod. I don't owe anything to stack.
@Frank Hah
22:05
but how? @fredley is not a room owner here.
As a mod, he can fix that too!
I have no reason to run, but reasons unknown to me, I decided to run. Hence "lulz".
@badp That's the joke!
...I think.
Because de-ownering is a joke for Arqade.
22:05
DON'T LET YOUR DREAMS BE DREAMS
but yes I discussed at length before on why I think there is actual merit to the joke.
Nobody "gains" anything from being a mod. Saying you don't gain anything from being a mod doesn't mean anything.
long story, probably not on topic here.
@ardaozkal This isn't making it clearer. Or more confidence-inducing
@Yuuki yes.
@Yuuki Not strictly. You gain a hat and at least one sticker!
user4704
22:06
And business cards.
I never got business cards.
And a font change!
@JoshPetrie Yup. Have you given any of yours away? I don't think I have
I think I had a chance to get them, but I declined.
So if you don't gain anything from becoming a mod, why would you do it? Resume builder? Feeling of importance? The drive to help Arqade be the best it can be?
3
user4704
22:07
@fredley Nope. I got one from another Game Development moderator the first time we met in person. But.... that's it.
@murgatroid99 I want to run for mod. I believe I fit for it, and I think that this is the best way for me to prove to arqade that I'm not a dickhead. Here, have confidence.
@Yuuki you gain a lot of hassle
user4704
My wife is using the box to prop up a calendar on her desk right now
@ChaseC I''m just gonna star that because it's possibly the most important question about an election
Seriously though, motivation is something I'd like to see in all nomination posts. cc: @uni @rob
22:08
@ardaozkal Proving you're not a dickhead isn't really a reason that builds confidence...
I already spend %90 of my free time here.
At least not to me.
@ardaozkal you can prove to arqade that you're not a dickhead without being mod
Why not help the community?
@ardaozkal I think you have it a little backwards. Proving to Arqade that you're not "a dickhead" should be a prerequisite for the position, not the outcome
22:08
didn't we provide the community with a motive already?
@ardaozkal "Why not" is not a great reason.
@ardaozkal that... helping you prove you're not a dickhead is not a reason to vote you for mod
You having to prove it is, in fact, a reason to vote against it
@KevinvanderVelden I'm really curious as to the answer to it. I'd like to nominate myself but I'm wondering why on Earth I should even do so
@fredley I think I might have the characters left for that
here's your motive
for absolutely free
22:09
@Unionhawk The first rule of the character limit is not to talk about the character limit (it wastes characters)
@fredley already done
@badp i want to make unhappyface mod less unhappyface!
the first rule about the character limit is to overflow your nomination speech into the comments area
you suckers
user4704
Looking back on my election I kinda feel like I had it easy.
@JoshPetrie i've seen that too
22:10
@badp Ooo good idea
user4704
I don't recall the process being anywhere near as rigorous as it is now.
user4704
I had one comment on my nomination.
Weren't you a mod from the beta?
(attempting to overflow your nomination speech into the comments area will result in hilarity. most of the hilarity will be at your expense. hilarity may vary. ask your doctor if hilarity is right for you. please contact a modrater if hilarity persists after four years.)
super contested election followed by no one nominating themselves
user4704
22:11
@KevinvanderVelden Nope.
user4704
I didn't join the site until well after it launched.
user4704
I will never get those two badges. :(
The second rule is to url-shorten all your nomination links (you have got some, don't you?)
user4704
(precog and, uh, whatever the beta one is)
22:11
@ardaozkal That's...not a way to prove that.
@fredley to link shorteners that can be changed to point to friday after the fact?
@KevinvanderVelden For bonus points, yes
@KevinvanderVelden it's @fredley @fredley, gotta expect no less from @fredley
Hmm... I just realized that probably the only reason I have the Caucus Convention badge is because of Movie Night.
@GodEmperorDune gotta change all their links into weekdays
@Yuuki shhhhhhhhhh
Well I am going to bed it is late over here
@KevinvanderVelden lies
source: am over here
also @Yuuki putting the movie night together every time probably deserves a unique badge of its own
God I miss upvotes on nomination comments
22:13
@fredley should we just modabuse them in
@badp lies upon lies good sir. Source: I have a clock
It is 12:14 am
I think @GraceNote would love this.
@fredley so it used to be a thing, right? i remember previous elections having them
I'm not particularly a fan of the flag button not being there
@KevinvanderVelden That is technically early.
Not late. :P
22:14
@Frank true! YOU WIN THIS ROUND @badp
@badp yeeah
What's the hap-ups?
@GodEmperorDune It's really not as much of a fuss that it's made out to be. I put up a meta every two months, wait a few weeks, check back on it, make a meta post, wait a few days, put up a movie on Rabb.it.
@GodEmperorDune yup
That just means I'm going to bed because it's far too early to be awake
Which is something I always want to do but never can so now I'm gonna do it HA!
22:15
@GraceNote What's the party line on why nomination comment votes were removed?
@fredley probably to lessen the drama
@fredley "Don't question it or we'll feed you to the owls"
@GodEmperorDune But the comment upvotes made the drama much easier to scan
@KevinvanderVelden I used to be a terrible user. Examples are in the comments there. Nobody even tries to trust me anymore, y'know. I don't fit that badly with the community anymore. I can understand what someone says and why they say that now. I believe I have what it takes. I'd start over if I could. Reset all interactions. Reset all the people who has me on ignore. I'd show them that I've changed enough. I'd then run for mod, not with this account, never.
22:16
It's really low-effort and generates a lot of goodwill. It's like doing a fundraiser for vets and except I don't call attention to it and yell at the media about it. Hashtag topical!
@Frank there isn't a real way to prove it.
@ardaozkal And I would vote against you for specifically these actions.
@YuukiForTrump2016
@ardaozkal Yes there is, it just takes a long time.
@ardaozkal Yeah, there is.
22:16
@Yuuki but the media is really dishonest
Longer than 3 months
It's called showing it.
Like, look at me: I'm blunt.
I argue with everyone about everything.
I can attest to that
I like to think I more or less get along with everybody, though.
@ardaozkal here's the thing, we don't want to trust you with the most power anyone can have on this site because why would we? There's no need for you to be a mod, there are other candidates
22:17
@KevinvanderVelden eys.
I'm not saying "VOTE ME VOTE ME". Please go ahead and vote @uni and @robotnik
So no, 3 months after the bad behaviour is not when we're gonna vote you for mod, possibly not even next year (if there's an election then). Trust is easy to lose and hard to build
Never has a conversation with Frank gone into a disrespectful territory or I thought that he was ever attacking me.
@ardaozkal That's kind of what a nomination is saying
4
And not voting you for mod doesn't mean we don't see improvement, it just means we don't see it as a done thing
@ChaseC Most of it is just me caring about quality a certain way.
22:19
SO! ATTEMPT THE NEXT. Bed o/
I argue passionately and loudly.
ORIGAMIROBOT IS ALIVE AND PLAYING BATTLEBORN
And then, whatever happens, I drop it.
It lasts for about a day. And then it's done.
22:19
@Frank Yeah I can respect that, and that type of passion is why I joined up to Arqade in the first place
@KevinvanderVelden /rooms/35
@ChaseC I try not to attack people. I'll attack your arguments all day long, but that's a core tenent of arguing.
I have no passion for SO, so I quit it. I don't think I'd ever feel the way about Arqade as I do with SO
@Frank yep yep, no ad hominem
From my research it's intentional and something we removed back in 2014
...a month after your last election
22:21
@GraceNote hah
@GraceNote So we were the cause. :P
@KevinvanderVelden fourth time is the charm?
Hah, don't think you folks were
Weren't there a couple of concurrent elections then? Or no?
@Unionhawk i want to say workplace's election was around then too
22:23
The most relevant point is Stack Overflow was having an election at the time we removed it
@GraceNote nuff said
SO comment threads must have gotten excruciatingly long
Naw, what happened was abuse of nomination comment flagging, I think it was.
And... terrible means to actually RIGHT THAT'S WHAT IT WAS
I decided to stay in election no matter what. I wonder the percentage I'll get.
@ardaozkal It's not a percentage-based system
22:24
you don't want to know
Mods got notified of flags on nomments (this is the official term now) but weren't given any way to see where the comment was and couldn't really act on it.
nomments, best word
@GraceNote The inability to link to nomments is infuriating too
Trump will make nomments great again
22:25
Wait can you not? Or just not properly?
@Unionhawk its unpossible
@fredley That's half the reason why we couldn't just add the links into the flag UI for mods.
trump built a wall around the nomments and got the flags to pay for it
@Unionhawk yes you can
dunno about properly
@GraceNote I can think of a better solution :P
22:27
I think the best mental model for SO devs is that they're so busy eating all of the food @Jin orders, they have almost no leftover time for work ever. They tried to work during Jin's deadly lunchathons, but ramen quickly became a barrier to collaboration
22:53
@badp oh man, I wish
all the devs are coming!
23:04
Alas, just me.
23:37
@Wipqozn in all seriousness, why do you want to be mod?
@Adam hello
@Dragonrage Hi. :)
@GodEmperorDune That's in the opening line of my nomination
> I'm Bryan and I’m volunteering for modship to help Arqade maintain the high quality it’s known for.
Silly @GodEmperorDune.
@fredley I wouldn't have put in my nomination if I wasn't motivated. I'm here almost every day reviewing, editing, commenting, participating in meta and so on. The reason I entered is because I believe I have the site experience, the right mindset (impartial yet
*impartial yet firm when needed
Damn auto-enter :-P
@Wipqozn that is super generic tbh
23:43
Anyway to continue: the experience, mindset, personality and time to put in to be mod.
user15026
@GodEmperorDune It's just his first sentence, he can build on it. Mention his socks, his turtle-personality, all kinds of good stuff yet.
user15026
(I actually did mention socks in my nomination, if I remember right.)
@AshleyNunn true, he mentions the turtle later
user15026
Oh wow, we've gotten 2 candidates since I last looked
