05:00 - 22:0022:00 - 00:00

05:29
I know from prior experience unless you've messaged in a chat you can't be @ pinged and receive notifications from it, so that's what this message is for.

Oh and also mainly because I threw my hat in the ring this year or something :P
05:42
@Robotnik the word "unstoppable" comes to mind :p
@GodEmperorDune haha :P
Also I figure I'll address this before someone asks: No I haven't had a message starred 10 times in chat, and the reason for that is that I'm hardly active in chat:

1) I tend not to spend too much time idling on the site. I'll spend some time, read some posts, edit some things, respond to notifications etc etc, and close tab.
2) I'll only join chat for matters of large discussions and/or if I'm @ pinged.
3) I'm not really here for the idle banter. You are all great don't get me wrong, and it's not like I actively try to *avoid* chat , it's just not really my thing :).
2
^Whoops: starred 10 times in chat - Worded wrong, supposed to be "starred by 10 different people in chat*" as per 'Outspoken' badge requirement :P

1 hour later…
06:59
@Robotnik Your position seems to be the exactly the same as mine - I also like to lurk, answer some questions, do some moderation, but chat isn't exactly my thing.
Still deciding whether I should nominate myself.
07:17
@angussidney You should. I mean, it's not like we lose anything by putting our names in. Worst comes to worst we don't get elected, oh well, back to business as usual :)
07:29
i am the exact opposite of @Robotnik, i haven't been around that long, never say much on meta, super active in chat
but yeah @angussidney you should definitely nominate if you're on the fence
Side note: if elected I'm gonna start calling the 'diamond' mod symbol 'chaos emerald' instead :P
2
@Robotnik Thanks for the tip
08:22
@Robotnik well, you've got my vote.
08:42
@Robotnik and mine
@Robotnik 4) Everyone else is asleep
2
@fredley Also true
@Robotnik Would be good to have an Aussie mod on board, we're mostly Western Europe/Eastern US at the moment
@fredley That same point was one of the consideration points for the Poketown admin position (the facebook group I help admin)
@Robotnik Being antipodean is an unfair advantage when it comes to mod elections
08:57
@fredley Well I hope it's not the only deciding reason to vote for me, although I'll take the advantage where possible :)
@Robotnik Haha, nope, I think you'd be great regardless - best of luck!
@fredley thanks! :)
10:01
is the mod workload on arqade particularly high? I don't visit quite as much as I used to, but it doesn't seem like activity has increased significantly.
10:35
@TZHX site gets a good amount of new users and new question types due to new games
New question types is, for example a question was asked about overwatch while it was closed after open beta, there was an argument if it was on topic or not.
@TZHX It's high enough that we're recruiting :)
In terms of janitorial work, there's no more than a few dozen flags to handle a day, however this is just one part of the work, and the only one that's really quantifiable.
10:51
@fredley would you mind elaborating on what your day-to-day activities are like on the site, beyond what is visible in your "activity"?
By the way, if anyone was running in the election only to see their mod score thingy, please run this query: data.stackexchange.com/gaming/query/298418/candidate-score
2
if being a mod means having popular meta opinions, then I'd never manage it. if it means carrying out the will of the site as expressed in meta voting, then I could.
@TZHX My interpretation of a mod's duty is that they carry out the decisions of the community rather than deciding for them. However they are, of course, allowed to put in their own opinion :)
@angussidney I agree. A strongly-opinionated mod who did things against community wishes, would be a detriment to the site. :)
11:55
@TZHX Handling flags is the baseline work - it needs to be done, and not all are straightforward to handle (though thankfully most are). Chat moderation is an odd one, it's not explicitly anyone's job, but it still needs to be done. Bear in mind that all elected mods will also become chat mods. Managing meta is another big job - we get notifications for every meta post, and it's our job to make sure everything gets handled, and arguments don't get too toxic. But you knew all this already :-)
@fredley toxic arguments on meta? surely not... ¬.¬
@TZHX How would you even be expected to know - we hide all the evidence
ah, so that's where all my comments go.
@TZHX Pretty sure they can also see deleted comments or at least have the power to edit other people's comments. IIRC @badp managed to salvage the text of a comment of mine once when I accidentally pocket-deleted it.
12:11
@Robotnik Both these things are true
I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night remembering the contents of deleted comments.
I don't believe you: coffee mods clearly don't sleep
@fredley lol. Surely there's a browser plugin to hide them, there's one for deleted answers...
@Robotnik Sadly these things kinda prevent you from doing your job. Deleted comments are hidden by default though
@fredley - Oh of course but it'd have to be togglable. At least they're hidden by default then. Sometimes I wish it were the same for deleted answers :/
@Robotnik And you're running for mod :P
12:18
At least spam and offensive are hidden
inquiry: when you look at the front page, do you see deleted posts mixed in, or do you have to search for them?
and I'd still open them even if they were hidden by default. Curiosity and all that
@TZHX I don't think deleted questions appear on the front page
honestly just my inner neat freak. Put the good things on display and the bad things in the bin. You can always fetch them from the bin if you need to :P

I don't actually use the browser addons that hide them, and it's never gonna be implemented on SE anyway so it's a moot point. :)
13:00
I can confirm that we can read deleted comments
13:21
\o I should favourite this room
Then I'll join at work

1 hour later…
14:45
@angussidney very helpful link

3 hours later…
17:35
tempted to nominmate myself because why not D:
18:26
@djsmiley2k ask yourself this: Will you have time for the duties if you get elected?
I'd like to get some information from existing moderators on how much time they put into their duties. I think I'd have enough time for it, but I'd like to make sure before nominating
user15026
@ChaseC Hm. I am probably the worst one to answer this.
user15026
(I tend to keep stuff open in a tab a lot of the time, so I don't know how much time I actually spend.)
19:01
@AshleyNunn Would you say it's 10 hours a week or 10 hours a month?
user15026
Probably more the latter
Well, I'd say neither.
oh?
10 hour of active time over a month
well yeah right
19:07
but I'd guess that you'll need to be cconstantly checking on the website
that amount of time i have
@ardaozkal if all the mods constantly checked on the website they would burn out pretty quick
I'm sure there would be some sort of communication if something needed immediate attention
user15026
@ardaozkal Based on what?
@AshleyNunn *I'd guess neither.
19:10
@ChaseC Most things that need immediate action can be done by regular users given enough flags
user15026
@ardaozkal Again, based on what? You're making a guess about something you don't do.
is it tradition or requirement that people post their names when running for election?
@Dragonrage I've seen people who don't on older elections
user15026
I'm just a little confused about how you are answering the "how much time does mod spend modding" when you aren't one
user15026
@Dragonrage It's not required :)
19:12
I'm not answering
I was more like saying that I don't think how many hours per week or month is an accurate representation as you'll still need to check regularly/semi-regularly.
as a somewhat related follow up @AshleyNunn, how would you breakdown the time you spend handling flags vs meta vs chat moderating? 30-30-30? 10-10-90?
user15026
@GodEmperorDune Most flags don't take long - they're usually pretty clear
so almost 50-50 meta and chat?
(because @fredley said there were like 12 flags per day or so)
user15026
maybe 20-40-40? (flags-meta-chat), if the flags are easy bits
user15026
19:14
More if you're like chasing socks or dealing with something on main flaring up
@GodEmperorDune More than that, a few dozen. It varies.
Today there have been 11 so far.
I'm feeling like throwing my name in the mix, who knows I might really enjoy it
@fredley Is this flags that make it through review disputed, or flags that don't hit review?
Or all of the above?
@Unionhawk Any flag.
Disputed flags reach the mod queue
Right
19:20
there are several people who havent nominated themselves currently that i expected too.
Also certain posts get auto-flagged (many comments, vlq, multiple closed questions)
and others
idk if these hit the normal review queues too, I think vlq does, but not the others
@Dragonrage some people are happy to do all the high rep things without the hassles of being a mod
@fredley VLQ does yeah
I think
19:21
I would post screenshots, except that by the time I'd obscured any private info there'd be nothing left
I mean I assume anyone elected would figure it out
@Unionhawk those are part of the modrater seekrits
Being a moderator is mostly about seekrits
to fight in the seekrit warz
I spend an hour moderating the steam group I'm an admin at. I can't just let them stay and do an hour of cleaning on sundays, I'll need to check reports every few hours. It might be different on stack, but according to what I've done to date it really depends on what kind of free time you have. Some people (that were previously) moderating the group weren't being online on weekdays but had all their weekends empty. We now prefer people that have their free times spread.
^where I know, what I mean
19:27
I feel like we generally have few fires to put out relatively speaking
@Unionhawk That's because we're so good at putting them out you never see them
#seekrit-fires
I mean, relatively speaking I'm sure I'm still right
Just, that might be relative to SO, which I assume is smoldering to varying degrees at all times
@Unionhawk SO is huge though
SO is just basically a massive wildfire at this point
@Unionhawk more like it is so big that there is always a fire somewhere
i would love to jump in those review queues but am pretty bad at answering SO questions
19:29
@GodEmperorDune There's a California joke in there somewhere
@ardaozkal What does Steam group moderation involve?
@GodEmperorDune there is a 20 limit anyways
@Unionhawk :S
@Sterno spam, swearing and sometimes hunting socks.
hunting socks is usually when we do giveaways
@ardaozkal every close vote helps
19:30
@GodEmperorDune yeah, pretty much
@ardaozkal Those three things are mostly taken care of automatically by the community/automated systems
spam/offensive flags auto-delete questions, and nearly all socks are caught out automatically
@fredley leaving you with all that free time for trolling
@fredley and mods take care of the part that isn't "mostly".
user15026
@ardaozkal Yes, but especially for the spam/offensive, it's rare the vacuum doesn't get them
user15026
You lot are really good at sucking that crap out before we even see it
19:32
@fredley Does the system at least give a moderator the satisfaction to fire the laser button?
@AshleyNunn gotta get that marshal badge somehow
"Arqade community best crap suckers" - @AshleyNunn 2016
2
user15026
@fredley You knowi t
@Unionhawk Oh yes
@fredley yeah! @AshleyNunn for arqade mod!
3
19:34
ahahahah
@fredley so you really don't do much as mod, huh
@GodEmperorDune I just sit here slamming the 'destroy user' button, basically
user4704
We had a good six or seven months of a really hardcore sockpuppet/ban evader on gamedev recently. pages and pages of "destroys a user" in the history :D
@JoshPetrie ugh, those are the worst
user4704
19:36
Of course now that I have mentioned him he'll probably come back :(
user4704
I hope you all appreciate the sacrifice I have made for you this day.
user4704
I expect a statue in my honor.
@fredley i like how it logs that you visited the elections page
@GodEmperorDune yeah, for the caucus badge
GUYS I MADE A FREDLEYSCRIPT
while (userList.Count() > 0) { destroyUser(RNG(0,userList.Count())); Wait(1000); }
19:37
It logs all kinds of stuff, for most users it's lots of different things, but for most mods it's just a list of user destroyed
@fredley is that a mod only log or something 20ks can see?
@fredley do you add a notch to your mouse for every user you destroy?
@Dragonrage there would be no mouse left
@fredley you forgot one
the one at bottom
he keeps a blood sample in his air conditioner
19:39
@GodEmperorDune Mod only, 20k is only tag wikis, answer delete votes, and delete votes on closed, negatively scored questions immediately
iirc
@GodEmperorDune mods only
@Dragonrage If I did, I would have spent quite a lot of money on mice by now
@fredley @FREDLEY IS A SERIAL KILLER: DATA ACCEPTED
@Dragonrage I'm absolutely not the zodiac killer
Why would you even suggest that
@fredley the zodiac killer wasnt the only serial killer
@Dragonrage o rly?
19:47
you are probably like the green river killer, except you have a different victim profile and youve killed more people
@Dragonrage mice
@fredley well, PETA probably considers mice people anyways, but we are now very offtopic from the election.
@Dragonrage Humanity is an experiment run by mice
@Dragonrage he's british. Clearly he's jack the ripper who was cryogenically suspended for reasons
@KevinvanderVelden Not just British, I live in East London
19:56
@fredley do you really think that I'll go through people's profiles and post their PII?
There was a short period of time where you went through people's profiles and posted their names. Granted, that's all public information because it's on profiles.
@Yuuki MARCH
that was back on march
Did I do anything stupid lately?
other than running for mod?
That's two months ago. Three, considering we're just about into June.
user15026
Unfortunately, part of the mod process is that everything you've done is under scrutiny
2-3 months ago is not a long enough time for actions to be ignored.
user15026
20:00
Regardless of when it happened and this is relatively recent, all things considered
@AshleyNunn and doxing is a serious thing
@GodEmperorDune Again, this information was already public.
But I guess it's the notion behind the action that's suspect here.
@Yuuki yes
user15026
@Yuuki If we know for sure that it was through profile mining, then yes
I agree that it was rude and I regret doing that. I can't change my past, so why should I suffer from it now?
There is nothing I can do right now.
user4704
20:02
I don't think the entire point of those sorts of pointed questions is to punish you, per se, for your past.
user4704
It's to gauge your response to them now.
> I agree that it was rude and I regret doing that.
my response.
it was already mentioned, the diamond is a huge target on your back
users will be upset with things you do and bring up all kinds of stuff
user15026
@JoshPetrie Yeah, it's more "this thing happened, it's concerning, how are things different now based on what moderation includes"
relevant or not
user15026
20:04
Seriously. Every thing you do and touch on the site will be noticed
user15026
they'll bring it up
user4704
A big part of being a moderator is having to comport yourself in a very measured, mature fashion. If there are events in your past that indicate that at one point you acted immaturely or irresponsibly, people (voters) will want to know about them, and if you've changed or regret or whatnot your actions.
And some people will never drop it and never forgive you for it.
user4704
They want to know what you think about those past things now. Not just for you to be able to magic them away like they never happened.
user4704
I gather that's a big part of the questions being thrown thrown your way right now, from what I can tell.
20:05
tbh that makes sense
user4704
There's also an aspect of trying to probe how you react to tough scenarios.
If you take any position of prominence or power, you have to reconcile with the fact that A) not everyone will like you and B) not everyone will forgive you, no matter how sincere you are.
and though we joke about mod abuse in the bridge it is actually a very real concern. we want to make sure that a mod candidate is not going flip out over something and abuse their power
user4704
To being challenged for things you did in the past.
user4704
Because that will come up again. You will accidentally overstep your bounds and close a question you shouldn't have, or delete one, or accidentally destroy a user that wasn't actually a sockpuppet.
user15026
20:06
Yeah, that's about the right of it
user4704
And then you will have to accept the consequences of that. Ideally you can do so respectfully.
user4704
Or heck, you will just get shit for closing somebody's question that was really a horrible question and they're just mad.
user4704
And they rant and they rant and leave spurious flags all over and comments on every question making questionable assertions about your mother and are you going to lose your cool? Or are you going to be able to deal with it calmly and rationally?
and no one is going to make a meta post thanking you for the good work you do. As @fredley said, a lot of the mod work is secret stuff, done quickly so that regular users never see it
I saw how people including me reacted to that guy on SFF winning. Being in that position right now, I feel sorry for him. brb apologising
user15026
20:13
@GodEmperorDune It's a thankless job.
@AshleyNunn Thank you, @AshleyNunn
user15026
@fredley thank you, @fredley :)
I mean, I'm fairly sure all the regulars here are thankful for what you guys do, even if we don't know the half off it
@KevinvanderVelden yeah i can second that
user15026
20:17
Yay!
cc @mods
user15026
Aww, that's so pretty :)
in Mos Eisley, 3 mins ago, by ardaozkal
@Randal'Thor Hey, a bit off topic to the room's topic but posting this to apologize for my childish reaction (getting my account removed) to you winning the election. Being in your position right now (running for mod on gaming.se), people bringing up stuff that I did months ago that I still regret is a terrible feeling. I'm truly sorry for being a part of the movement against you. You are a good mod. Keep up the good work.
doing this just felt well
almost magical
Like an antidepressant
I guess hate really does cause hate.
20:33
When you say "Back in March" like it was a long time ago, I feel old.
@Sterno I feel like it has been years since march
no part of my life is repeating
@Sterno That's because back in march isn't a long time ago at all
@Wipqozn From your perspective. You're old.
@Sterno Says you
Does that make me old?
I don't think that's how it works
20:35
For @ardaozkal it was like 2% of his life ago
@Unionhawk I do go to bed early
"Back in March" - It's not March any more?!
@Sterno that is more than the amount I've gamed in my life.
user15026
@fredley Apparently tomorrow is June....
%1.4 of my life is gaming
20:36
@AshleyNunn O.O
I didn't even realize I was in the election room. I thought this was the bridge.
@Wipqozn we have the key members here.
@Wipqozn That's your excuse. We all know you're gearing up to nominate
So, welcome to Bridge 2
@ardaozkal No.
20:37
@fredley Man, if I don't nominate folks are going to be so disappointed .
I'm torn between my desire to help the site and my desire to disappoint everyone.
4
user15026
You don't really want to disappoint everyone, and deal with all the tears, do you?
@AshleyNunn can lions swim?
@ardaozkal he is a turtle
@ardaozkal maybe, but turtles can!
@Dragonrage a turtle dressed as a lion.
20:48
@Wipqozn does the 10 seconds of satisfaction from trolling outweigh the years of regret you will have?
also, lions can swin
@Wipqozn post nomination, withdraw in 5 days
@Dragonrage DECISIONS ARE HARD MAN
that way you can disappoint 2x effectively
i actually dont think i can run in this election iirc. i think i dont meet 2 of the requirements that i saw posted somewhere
I know know turtle's intention.
@Dragonrage which requirements?
20:52
i think it was the editing badge and a meta post at 10+
@Dragonrage If the system lets you apply you can run
user15026
@Dragonrage Those aren't requirements per se
looks like youre in dragon!
no turning back now
@ChaseC the peer pressure is intense :)
@ardaozkal Like it or not, voting against someone is a valid action.
If you nominate yourself, that sort of thing is something you have to be prepared for.
@Frank everyone is free to vote against me
Just voting against me because some people said that they aren't supporting me is not a good move imo though.
@ardaozkal Others are voting exclusively because they're supporting you. So others shouldn't be able to do the opposite?
> I wasn't planning to vote on this election, as I'm not personally familiar with any of the nominees
that's what i would do, i would rally the people who like me and try to get them to support me and not support other nominees
21:44
@ardaozkal And then they got more information, and decided to vote. That seems legit to me
@murgatroid99 not a bad logic.
The election is going to go on for at least one more week (shh I forget and/or we might end up skipping primaries)
aaand he mentioned my age
now I don't care.
i think your age is a valid parameter to judge your worthiness imo
should we not take everything into account?
@Unionhawk if wipqozn doesn't hop by and people keeps on commenting, it'll be over in 6 days
21:46
@ardaozkal Age is a valid factor.
It can play a part in determining maturity level, which is something that is very much needed to be a mod.
@Frank agreed
I'm actually surprised mine is silent except for "Unionhawk's voting record is 2:1, average is 5:1"
@ardaozkal Folks aren't voting against you because others don't support you, they're voting against you because of the actions you've taken. Actions they feel are so bad that they are so worried about you getting diamond powers that they'll take steps to prevent you from getting it.
Which is also surprising but whatever
@Unionhawk is that 5 up for every 1 down?
21:48
Like I said earlier today, you're going to need to deal with a lot harsher stuff than @badp saying he thinks you're "just not ready"
Welcome to the fun of elections!
@Wipqozn yeah elections are tough
I know I wasn't expecting the level of attention on my actions when I ran for mod last elections.
except for @uni who is cruising on through
@Frank that means you've been vetted now :D
@GodEmperorDune Well, I almost won, too.
are you running this year @frank?
21:49
Which I honestly wasn't expecting; I tend to take a lot of flak for how blunt I am.
@Frank if you can unilaterally flag things, i'll never get my marshal badge from when you post "burn" links in the bridge
@ChaseC Not exactly sure if I want to make that level of commitment; my life's gotten incredibly busy in the last couple of years.
@GodEmperorDune Based on my flag record, neither will anybody else. :P
@GodEmperorDune ikr. i need those flag counts
@Unionhawk If you'd like I can ask you vague questions such as "Who do you think you are?" and "What gives you the right?"
@Wipqozn why is your name @uni, and why are you a tugboat?
21:51
@Wipqozn Technically the answer to the second is "300 reputation" :P
Okay, can we not?
Not the Bridge; let's keep the discussion to moderation and election stuff.
7
@Wipqozn none of the points on the comments against me are that valid. Most are about what I did in the past. Only truly valid thing there is what badp said about my badges. Look, I was a terrible user, I'm less terrible now, yet I'm still bad. Post my current bad actions and I'll not care. You are posting old stuff I can't change now, which is the problem.
@Unionhawk Man that's way too specific for my vague question. In all seriousness, though, it's probably because you have a mostly clean reputation.
user15026
@ardaozkal The thing is though, past history does matter
21:53
@ardaozkal You don't get to decide what criticism of you is valid in this context
Your past actions are valid
@ardaozkal In this case "the past" is 3 months ago. 3 months is barely anytime at all.
@Wipqozn %2 of my life.
And everything is in the past, after it happens.
@ardaozkal and why does that make you a better mod candidate than other users who were never terrible?
21:53
In case of a turtle, that'd be 2 year.
3 months is the extremely recent past
@AshleyNunn kalina withdrew for exactly that reason.
That isn't how it works
And a reasonable approximation of "present"
And her actions were almost a year ago at that point.
21:53
@GodEmperorDune I'm not a better candidate.
@ardaozkal then why should we vote for you over the other candidates?
Heck, present is you going in online games for the express purpose of trolling. That doesn't indicate to me you're mature
I don't get why you should be able to say what you want to be used to validate your condidacy
@ardaozkal If you don't think you would be a better mod than the other candidates, why are you running?
@ardaozkal People judge actions, not intentions. Even if your stance has changed radically from 3 months ago, there isn't much evidence of actions (right up until the past few hours) displaying such a change.
@murgatroid99 Technically, you only have to consider yourself better than n-1 candidates
21:56
@murgatroid99 me not thinking != what others are thinking. I'm not jumping off the train. I'll stay on this till the end, whether I win or not.
@fredley Fair enough
If there is 11 or 3 people in 6 days, I'll withdraw to make elections shorter.
user15026
@ardaozkal Why would you withdraw at 3 people?
Then it's a win by acclimation.
user15026
I don't think we do that
21:58
So is the general consensus that meta posts are weighted heavier than non-meta posts in mod elections?
@Frank I wonder what would happen
if there were only 2 candidates, and 0 votes
@fredley n-2 if we decide to pick one extra winner. which in the case of a 3 candidate thing we obviously cannot do.
@fredley nomination phase extends, i think
@AshleyNunn oh? So I'd stay.
I think the election phase simply is longer
user15026
21:58
IIRC election only runs if there are more people than seats
Also I see why some people leave stack after elections.
I sent that way too early, now I need to start retyping. The point I was going to make is you can't change the past, and there's nothing unfair about us judging you for the past, even if it happened 2 years ago. You made mistakes, and the community not trusting you is the consequences of those mistakes. The only way to regain the communities trust is by being on good behaviour for a very long time, and 3 months just isn't that long, not for the actions you took.
4
it can't be the nomination getting longer, or the nomination phase would have to end as soon as an 11th person joins the race, and that would be silly
