2:27 AM
@Scott O_O

2:51 AM
Pretty standard.. had a 5 figure tax bill last year too. Should pay quarterly estimates but.. well.. was buying a house last year... so... yeah.... quarterly estimates this year though.
I miss the days of getting refunds (never happens as a full time freelancer).

3:33 AM
@Scott thought you would get a tax break after getting a new house though
is it normal for a cat to drag around their favorite toy around the house?

3:56 AM
@Ryan have a good weekend?

@Matt I did. Saved a few thousand due to the house. But still 5 figures: Actually only a couple hundred less than last years. Without the house I'd have been paying a few thousand more than last year. An

shoot I got back money but then I have a sprout

And yes @Matt my cat drag her toys into the bedroom when I go to sleep every night. I often have to get up and take them away from her so I can sleep.
yeah I've got zero deductions and no 9 to 5 so everything is taxable

my cat knew she was in trouble the other day ago when she wouldnt stop after I told her to at 3am so I picked her up and put her in the laundry room and closed the door..

My cat has this little stuffed wolf abotu half her size.. she drags it around the house all the time. It's her wrestle buddy.

4:01 AM
my cat sleeps on a 4' Minnie mouse, lol

Ha! They can sleep in odd places.
I have an end table in the living room.. somehow, I have no idea how, my cat manages to crawl into the bottom draw to sleep at times. There must be enough space under it for her to wiggle her way in.

um ya she decided to play monkey doo dee under the bed knocking things around is why she was put in her room
wonder if I will get my first bounty with Vincent's question... cross-fingers
so how was ur weekend?

not great.. taxes working. But not really that bad either. I can't complain too much. Yours?

watched Gone Girl and spent most of it enjoying the weather before it got really humid

it's been rainy here lately so weather hasn't been a factor :) Gone Girl was good. Saw Hot Tube time machine 2... meh.. pretty much the same as the first.
which was what I expected

4:12 AM
ya sequels usually blow but gone girl was a trip... kinda felt a little longer then it should

yeah you think it's slowing down and getting boring just when the opposite starts happening
Also saw the wedding ringer. Not horrible but no real surpises either

I dont have any others I want to see other than FF7 and padington bear

Not excited for the Avengers?

y?
Im not going to the movies for it but ill wait for it on video

Jurrassic Wolrd?
Fantastic 4?
Get Hard?
Mad Max?

4:15 AM
JW will be a maybe but no and no again on F4
get hard? another die hard really?

Mission Impossible?

really?

Nio Get hard is Will Ferrall
Looks funny.. hard to say really though

mad max Im tempted

@Matt had good workouts, didnt do much else. ran lots of errands. I leave on a work trip tomorrow

4:16 AM
oh I cant stand will ferril as a first person actor
@Ryan have fun good luck
think the best WF movie is still old school

well those are the ones I may see.. really depends upon realees as to whether or not I'll pay theater pricing. I KNOW they release bad films between Man and Septeber
Old shcool was good. But so was.. uhmm...Anchorman 1

never saw it =P

Never saw Anchorman??
Oh come ON!
And Talledega Nights was good too

never wanted to
just not a big WF fan

He's either hit or miss
always a crap shoot :)
I think Anchorman and Talldega Nights are two of my favorite comedies though.

4:19 AM
man I cant find a tutorial on our site =P

we don't do tutorials, silly.

found it, wanted to test to see if I could re-create it in imagemagick

okay i"m off. Have fun with imagemajik :)

later

2 days ago, by Zach Saucier
what do you guys think of my business card design? http://codepen.io/Zeaklous/pen/zxVjBr

4 hours later…
9:02 AM
@Zach looks nice!

3 hours later…
12:05 PM
@ZachSaucier might not be enough contrast on the white text on blue background. Depends how good of a print it is I suppose

12:23 PM
@Ryan hi

@joojaa hi

:P
Oh blimey there is a kbd shortcut for edit

up

yeah ecept down does not go back to no edit for some reason
esc does

press up arrow

12:26 PM
yeah
but as i say up down does not return to new post

no no I was just kidding at that point

:P

up up down down left right b a start+select

I was thinking of getting a job as a technical illustrator
could be nice

hey gents

12:30 PM
hey @vincent

@Ryan how's the trip?

@joojaa I need one of those jobs like Kim Kardashian where they just kinda pay you to exist, that's my kinda job.
@Vincent so far I've made it from one side of my apartment to the other :D airport at 3pm EST

@Ryan well I tried to be more realistic but sure... i dont think you have the sex appeal tough :) Id say wrong plumbing.

@Ryan ah, I wasn't sure. Well, small step for a man :P

my typing today sucks ass

12:33 PM
how were exams, @joojaa?

Well i held the exams, but yes its always a bit problematic to generate 12 good questions in a nonexistent time frame. So i didnt sleep much the last 3 days
so to asnwer your question... sleepy

hehe, got time to catch up on some the nex few days?

well i slept 2 days
Anyway i was thinking of switching over to technical illustration. That is if i can find such jobs

they do exist. A friend of mine used to work in that capacity for years at Fokker, the aviatior

yes i was refereing to in my region

12:40 PM
Thanks guys

hey @Zach

@ZachSaucier Evening
test

@Ryan you missed a left + right xD
o/

o<-<
<><

any time. I was in doubt, btw... Myself, I'd try and put the box with your name on the front just above the exact middle (with the text's baseline matching the exact middle), for the exact middle often ends up looking a bit too low

12:42 PM
O))____CRAYOLA_____))>

@Vincent kk. I'll bump it up a bit

@Zach well, I'm not sure
maybe it'll look bad because of the box around it

codepen.io/Zeaklous/pen/zxVjBr 10px above perfect center seems to work alright :)

Yeah, that looks way better. 'Optical middle' always ends up being just above exact middle, imho

still think colors will be hard unless you use a high end press working on a colored stock

12:49 PM
ya, I understand
I'll talk to the printers about it
not against changing, just unsure what to change to :P

you could consider printing in PMS, that way, your white text on cyan background is always groing to be crisp. There's always going to be a possible registration issue with the grey text on the cyan bg, tho.

I don't remember hearing about PMS for printing

Pantone = PMS (Pantone Matching System)

I google searched that much :P

it's a system that lets you print colours directly as actual inks of that colour, instead of mixing them using a grid of dots

12:55 PM
mmhm

that way, your grey is going to be a full-colour grey, instead of a mix of cyan, magenta, yellow and black dots

sounds more expensive :P

think of it as paints. Instead of choosing CMYK (67, 0, 34, 0) you would look at a Pantone book and choose PMS-3258 which is a single paint

2PMS is usually about as expensive as full-colour (CMYK) printing
depends on your printer, of course

Also, what format do I sent the design to a printer in? The business I was going to use has an online platform that asks for an image...

12:57 PM
And like Vincent said you could still get registration issues on that grey text on teal which is why I say either needs to adjust colors for more contrast (which could still get registration) or need to print on colored paper so you can print the lighter color on top
@ZachSaucier Is it like AlphaGraphics or something? Generally you would send a PDF from InDesign though honestly for business cards PDF from Illustrator works too. If you do go with Pantone though you'll want to contact them and see first. Some of those places might not do it.

white and grey ink on cyan paper might work best, indeed. is gonna be expensive, tho

I brother recommended Vistaprint as we have a branch in our city

welcome to the wonderful world of print :)
hm. I disrecommend Vista.
(that goes for print as well as Windows :P )

yeah Vistaprint is like Alphagraphics its just a cheap shop for doing flyers and business cards. Would work but for your design won't be very good. Just depends on how much you want to spend to get the cards consistent though
Or you can of course change the design

1:01 PM
so, I know if I change it I need to change the cyan color, but how does it need to be changed? To a darker color?

The thing to remember is Ink is a liquid and some gets absorbed by the paper, depending on how much ink (0, 0, 0, 20) for example is less ink than (0, 0, 0, 100) and the weight of the paper. Then if you have white that's not white, that's paper. So in yours its going to color all of that teal background and try to NOT COLOR the white text
Digital printing might be good enough for you though. And its dirt cheap at a place like Vistaprint so could always do a run and if you're not happy go elsewhere next time
but anyways, I've got to get going to take care of stuff now that i'm done eating. later all

later, @Ryan. have a good trip!

@ZachSaucier I would work on the spacing because all the letters seemed jammed together

what Ryan's saying, is that tiny details (like, small thin letterforms) might get distorted or partially filled due to the ink absorbing the paper. this of course depends on the detail size, the ink volume and presence of a paper coating
@Zach dizzy already? :P
hey @Matt

@Vincent sup! hows my favorite neitherlander

1:10 PM
okay. prepping for teaching four hours of course tonight
how's my favourite TN'er?

good.. launched a couple of sites, making some mockups and releasing the "write-up" on them. Need to make a twitter design but other than that the morning is still to be determined
so are you guys going to prepare a meta speech for the election victory? @Ryan @Vincent

oh, yeah. I already have my speeches ready in case of both victory and defeat
'Thanks!' and 'Congratulations!', respectively

@Matt do you want to play around with it a bit? Looks alright to me :P It's a CodePen, so it's easily editable

@ZachSaucier when I have time but right now I dont.

1:25 PM
We have a duplicate of duplicate of duplicate of chain where the last one is not duplicate of the first one
lol

links...
might need some editing

Its the long shadow question

if its not actually a duplicate then I would encourage an edit for it to go up on the chopping block then we can re-open it
ya thats a duplicate..
but I didnt follow the chain
I know the last image of the question it was linked to was almost identical to what he is trying, plus when I looked at it, I didnt see any effort

@Vincent Why not Vistaprint?

yes i can agree on that but the one it points to is also marked duplicate

1:27 PM
vistaprint does TERRIBLE quality.. i would choose Moo

and that

@ZachSaucier cheap, and it shows
and what Matt said

trying ordering 1000 calendars to have them all cut incorrectly and an angry client because they wanted to use them instead of using the mom and pop shop you recommended. Took three iterations before they finally got it right

How can vistaprint be bad they say that they have good quality on first page.

1:30 PM
lol

;)

should the after-effects question be migrated to video.se?

yeah

1:50 PM
done

2:01 PM
dang it. 80% chance of rain all day... Going to class in this stuff stinks

having just been down there, I have little pity for you
I'd be happy to trade climate for a week, or month :)

don't get me wrong, I love the weather, just not rain when going to class :P

I guess then I won't make you guys jealous with the really nice spring weather we're having here. :P

Dom
Howdy squires :)
D-day is upon us!
anybody interested in that SVG optimisation question might find a very quick option in my late answer:
2
A: Can I reduce the file size of an SVG to be closer to its JPEG equivalent?

DomSVGOMG! is an Awesome Web-App for SVG Optimisation According to the creator of the app, SVGOMG is SVGO's "Missing GUI". Running it on the image provided brings it down to just 3.42kb, and just 1.4kb after being gzipped.

2:16 PM
hi Dom

Dom
@Vincent how are you?

I'm good, thanks. Finally able to take some days off soon. How's about you?

Dom
Good thanks, my nerdy tendencies are very excited by the fact that I could reduce a 110kb SVG sprite to 42kb with that app, saves soo much time on my sites load, (making it far more technically impressive overall :)

Nice! But makes me wonder how slow your server is...

@JohnB lol
@Vincent is it in the 70s?

2:25 PM
(20s)

not yet

wait you're in the 20s?!?

roaring :)

celcius

top down on the jeep yet?

2:27 PM
so tempted to do it today but it will rain tomorrow

hehe, the top on my bike is always down

@Vincent touche, lol
blasted I need to work on my load times for this site.. needs to be quicker!

today it's still 55-ish, but tomorrow it will be mid-sixties. We Dutch start celebrating with that kind of temps

might be the Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ILLEGAL

@Vincent I'm with you, that's t-shirt weather!

2:28 PM
in the spring, yes. In the summer, it's jacket weather :P

haha very true

wait summer jacket weather?

Dom
@JohnB 'sooo much time' is probably between 0 and 2 seconds lol

@Dom net users are an impatient lot.

for 70kb I'd expect microseconds of a difference
but...enough optimizations and it all adds up
mobile users thank you

Dom
2:31 PM
@JohnB the image is a sprite itself holding 8 icons and a logo, so that's already some of the optimisation, I didn't think I could squeeze much more out of it, so over 50% reduction is sadly exciting
can even shave 1 or 2 more kb's by running through the other web service first lol

morning : )

hey cocky

sup pup

Dom
howdy rowdy :) (cocky similar to rowdy)

meh, Monday as usual haha

2:34 PM
@Vincent ever play with CRON jobs for WP?
@cockypup can say that again.. I think the US should make 32 hours fill time lol
mandatory three day weekends

I would love that!

isnt that right in england? there work load is less than americans

Dom
40 hour week is standard here
off for some lunch, cyas soon (4pm lunch :)

@Matt not yet, what are they?

a way to automate a site
@ZachSaucier if you use the <p> tag instead of the <div> you can get some spacing codepen.io/anon/pen/emqYyb

2:42 PM
@Matt but they close the pubs early on Sunday... nothing is perfect : (

@cockypup not if you brew your own.. I really want to

@Matt ah, yes, I have a friend that brews his own honey mead. amazing. sounds like lots of fun

I dont think the wife would like me doing that too much because I would probably drink all day long

yes, my thought, because it would not be drinking, it would be "tasting" and "quality controlling"

first coffee after completing a 30 day challenge to abstain from it...

2:51 PM
haha

@JohnB oh, you madee it!? congrats!

thanks!
I didn't really miss it all that much, I just like having something hot to sip on. And peppermint tea just wasn't cutting it
but not drinking it definitely heightens my appreciation for it :)

I regularly beat your challenge :D

no coffee ever for you?

I do drink it, just sporadically

2:55 PM
ahh

don't have a need for it right now, it seems

Alright taxes are done (yep I'm just that last minute). Suitcase packed. Now all I need to do is download some music for the plane ride. Any suggestions?

what are you looking for?
my ultimate zone-out album (great for programming/working) is Dive by Tycho
mellow electronic, minimal lyrics

One of my favorite recent finds: youtu.be/SyTchswHxhY

I know Tycho, they're alright. Do you look at Ghostly @JohnB ?

2:58 PM
nope, should I check anyone else out on that label?

@ZachSaucier gah way too poppy for me

I've heard of Com Truise but never listened

it is on the poppy side of my library. 2:49 is just great though
uni has made me enjoy it more by default
a bit more weird but I enjoy it: youtu.be/TuJqUvBj4rE

@JohnB there's a few I like on there and its nice site that you can listen to everything on to see whats good. Shigeto is one of the better ones. I usually prefer stuff with some sort of lyrics which most Ghostly don't seem to have but Shigeto is still pretty good

3:00 PM
I'll do some exploring, thanks for the tip

oh Ultraista is nice too, forgot that I found them there
This guy may have just won the internet, or a visit from the secret service:

guys, gotta run. @Ryan have a good trip and you and @Dom g'luck with the last leg of the elections!
waves

@Vincent thanks dude, see ya

later
speaking of coffee.. what is the best brand to drink?? still searching for that perfect cup of jo

Intelligentsia

3:10 PM
foldgers isnt cutting it..

Wawa around here, but that's a local thing

@JohnB ... by local you mean 6 states :P

alright...relatively
and I forgot they expanded down to Florida

just found a really good track but its a remix and can't find it to download

6 states is a bit misleading though, they don't have Wawas in western PA or northern NJ
augh worse than that, no Wawa anywhere except SE PA
(in blue)
they must spread the love...
I never understood why a Philly-centric convenience store jumped all the way down to Florida to expand, though I'm sure there's some logical reason

3:22 PM
Lots of people from PA move down here. It's obvious any time there's a Steelers game. Never could figure out why but its true

ah, just read that in an article so you're dead on
> South Florida is a natural fit for Wawa because of the region's dense population and its number of northeastern transplants who know the brand

@JohnB ship me some, lol

transporting Wawa across state lines...that might be a felony!

I'm always dead on, remember that and vote for me! Ryan for President, 2016!

haha

3:26 PM
Amazing song, free to download, and she's only 17! --- taliupthelove.bandcamp.com/track/the-moon-is-my-witness

yeek... 17, easy there buddy

TBH I couldn't figure out how that guy even got into the chat, had no rep here??

chat is network wide, so you can have 15(?) rep from any site to join any room

oh really? I thought it was based on its community

no

3:29 PM
similarly, mods from any site have mod powers in any chat room. Though I don't think I've ever done any moderatoring in another room

we dont have power in the HTML room for some reason
I feel weak when I go in there ;)

yeah Stack Overflow chat is a "separate network"

ha.. figures not surprised really
I think Im going to ask for a critique on an illustration Friday..

uh oh, got the box of tissues ready?

dont worry I won't be here so one less jerk to deal with

3:34 PM
Ill wait.. no I need the honesty because Im stepping back into it for a few projects in mind

I still haven't decided if I should bring my laptop or not

you should, you will kick yourself for not doing it

eh I didn't last time but last time was 3 nights. This time is 6 nights

Hmm for 6 nights if you've got the room in your luggage I would
unless you have a tablet or something, that might be sufficient

shoot I have to have my tablet and laptops wherever I go

3:37 PM
no tablet. made due with phone last time. It just feels weird bringing a laptop, granted this is work not vacation --- but after work do I really want to sit on my laptop in a hotel room?

depends on the location I guess, where you headed?

vegas?

Vegas

oh...
so now maybe it comes down to if you want a distraction from all the wonderful opportunities to burn some money :)

after thinking about it Im wouldnt even sleep
net we see him on an episode of Pawn Stars...

3:39 PM
I really hate gambling but yeah I would probably ignore the laptop and just go around enjoying myself, I've never been there

I already touch based with a local and she's going to pick me up and take me to see outside the strip

cool!

sounds like a plan there
just dont take a fanny pack.

If I were going... digthisvegas.com/what-you-do

....bahahahahah I hope you're kidding
My construction friends would kill me if I paid to do what they bust their asses doing all day

3:42 PM
oh yeah uh totally
ok not for $249/90min
though I wouldn't expect things to be cheap in Vegas

I think its almost the same price as going to Hawaii no?

JohnB you like Bluegrass right?

I do enjoy it but I'm not a fanatic
I don't think I'll ever grow tired of listening to Green Grass and High Tides

Willie Watson is pretty good

cool, I'll check him out

3:48 PM
Anyone like Irish music?

I would probably insult someone by saying that I thought Mumford & Sons were an Irish band
other than Riverdance I'm not familiar at all

This is Irish, and kind of awesome: fiddlefreak.com/2014/10/01/hanz-araki-foreign-shore

ok anyone know of a good spellcheck for rendering in a browser?

hmmm nope, maybe there's a good extension but that's always a gamble isn't it

i wonder if it would be a worthy question..

4:02 PM
@Matt do you mean spellcheck a given page?

essentially I want to check a full site and I also want to test when using a <span>

Dunno what you mean by "test when using a <span>"

<p>This is <span>something</span></p> Check the spacing between is and something

@Matt dont think spell checking has anything to do with graphic design

could write a little script to do that

4:05 PM
@Ryan facepalm.. it does when the design looks like crap =P

browser bugs would be on topic as well then :P

trying to figure out how to word it

I know they have strict requirements for questions but I'm not familiar with the rules over there

blasted I lost my link to mac keyboard unicode value for shortcuts
@Ryan any good places to take kids around there that isnt a park or water ride?

4:25 PM
@Matt in Orlando area? Sure, what kind of stuff are you looking for
And what age kids

I was thinking of animals, 6

Dom
@Vincent C̶o̶n̶g̶r̶a̶t̶ .. Good luck to you and Ryan to :D

@Dom really???

Dom
@Matt huh?

@Matt well there's the Central Florida Zoo but really Animal Kingdom will blow the zoo out of the water
You can go to this restaurant called uh... one second
Sanaa

4:28 PM
@Ryan we've been to the Lowry Zoo every year and the Tampa aquiarim which arent bad just looking for something fun...
kinda cliche but was going to look at aligators since my kid likes watching swamp people

ah well then Central Florida Zoo has ziplining but I've never been. I'm sure they've got gators too
Gatorland is around, never been there either

ziplining over gators... sounds great! lol

Well if you want you can go to Black Hammock which is just down the road from me. Its basically a sports bar but there's gators outside of it (in cages) and then they do airboat rides because they're on a lake

I think my kid would like an air boat ride

Yeah that's the only one off the top of my head but I'm sure there's a bunch around
If you go to Black Hammock for it, hit me up. I'm literally down the road from it

4:39 PM
will do

Hmm to bring a shirt and tie to Vegas and pretend I'm rich or to slum it. These are the important questions

why not a t-shirt with a bow tie printed on it and rock a top hat... for fun, I would

It's bad enough I have autism you want me to dress like it too :(

ha ha ha

5:08 PM
@ZachSaucier that example on the <p> tag for space? thoughts?

I changed them over to <p>s but reduced the margin-top/bottom to .8em instead of the default 1

look better?

I think so
